More than a dozen americans infected with the coronavirus are among hundreds of evacuated from a quarantined cruise ship. Now they are all facing more time in isolation as the officials are fighting to keep the outbreak from spreading near the United States. Im wolf blitzer, and this is a special situation room report. Tonight, a white house official is elling cnn that President Trump has confidence in the attorney general bill barr despite the rapidly calling calls from the former Justice Department officials for barrs resignation. More than 2,000 have now signed a letter saying that he should step kodown over the controversl association with the socials of trump, Michael Flynn and roger stone. And we are also following the battle for nevada, and choosing the next winner of the democratic race. Early voting is now under way with more than 26,000 ball lots cast so far. We will talk about that and more with senator ben cardin of the Foreign Relations committee. And our correspondents and analysts are also standing by. First, straight to the white house. Our chief White House Correspondent jim acosta is joining us. Jim, sharp criticism of the attorney generals actions. That is right, wolf. On this president s day, the president staid out yed out of s his attorney general is facing criticism over his handling of Michael Flynn and roger stone. One Deputy Attorney general from the bush 41 Administration Says that barr may be turning the u. S. Into a Banana Republic. Reporter more than 2,000 former justice officials have signed on the a letter demanding that attorney general william barr step down and the list is growing. The officials have accused him with the department of those favorable to the Trump Associates like the dirty trickster roger stone. The damage they have done to the department of justices integrity. More than 1,000 former department of justice officials republicans and democrats are calling for the attorney general to step down for the abuse of the office. Folks, i am serious, no one has ever ever weaponized the Justice Department like he has. Reporter in a separate oped in the atlantic former republican general donald ayer went farther saying that this is not a place that trump voters would want to go, and it is a Banana Republic where all are subject to the dictatorial control. And many others said they were working hand in glove. The president of the United States has not asked or directed the attorney general to do anything in any criminal matter including roger stone, and two, he works hand in glo with the attorney general as we are all privileged to do in matters that affect this country. Reporter and aides say no way he will stop tweeting about the federal cases, even though they are involving friends he wants spared an enemies he wanted punished by the prosecutors. And it is something that propelled him to the top, and it is how he communicates with the americans, and it is a effective way for him to communicate to the american people. Reporter and the president fired out one alarming tweet likening himself to a king. Ralph Waldo Emerson seemed to see the impeachment of the king, and emerson said that when you striket the king, you must kill him. Gentlemen, start your engines. Reporter this is not the only harrowing tweet from trump world as they took a victory lap at the daytona 500. And his Campaign Manager got wrecked on twitter and there is one problem, the photo was from 2004 when then president george bush visited the racetrack. And the president is continuing the victory lap as he is seeing it over the rest of the week as he is traveling out west to do fundraising and three separate rallies in colorado, arizona and nevada and three states that are going to be critical in determining if mr. Trump can win a second term, and as for the attorney general, the white house has confidence for william barr and as for the tweet for Brad Parscale has deleted it. And we have a guest coming in the next hour as well to talk more about this. And now, evan perez is here to talk about this letter that is signed by those who worked in republican and Democratic Administration and serious rebuke. It is a rebuke, and wolf, the attorney general and people inside of the department are more concerned about what is happening inside of the department. Current officials. So that is why you saw bill barr do the interview with abc and try to push back and show a little bit of the daylight between himself and the president. I think that he is worried more about the feeling inside of the department more than people who are former officials, but it is very significant this letter. If you are looking at it, and i will read a part of it. Mr. Barrs action in doing the president s personal bidding unfortunately the actions speak louder than words and the ak shauns and t actions and the damage they have done to the department of justices reputation for integrity and the rule of law, require mr. Barr to resign. So this is going directly to the inspector general. And we know that the long time confident roger stone is going to be sentenced this week. What is the latest we are hearing . The latest is that the judge overseeing this, judge jackson has scheduled a Conference Call tomorrow to discuss some of the things that went on, and so many things that happened last week, wolf, including four prosecutors who quit the case. She has yet to even acknowledge the fact that those four prosecutors are no longer there. So for now it appears he is going to be sentenced this week, and he has requested twice for the judge to declare a new trial and we dont expect it is going to happen, and certainly, tomorrow, we will get to the first indication of her reaction to what went on at the Justice Department last week. We will see what she says and evan perez is reporting for us, and we will get more on this with senator ben cardin of maryland, and he is a member of the Foreign Relations committee and senator, thank you for joining us, and i wanted to get your reaction and more than 2,000 former federal prosecutors and the department of justice officials believe that the attorney general of the United States william barr should resign. Do you agree . Wolf, i absolutely do agree. Attorney general barr has been the personal attorney for the president and not attorney for america. This is when he has been doing the personal bidding of the president and not the independent department of justice which has a great reputation of being an independent agency, and attorney general barr has crossed the line. I agree that he needs to resign. How significant is this rebuke of the attorney general is . Oh, it is unprecedented. Here you have a career members of the department of justice, former members of the department of justice that are signing a letter asking the attorney general to resign and this is unprecedented and the number is around 2,000 indicates the pride in the professionalism and independence of the entity under which attorney general barr has moved to be a partisan entity for the president and rather than independent department of justice. Does the Justice Department still have credibility, senator . There are great people and independent people who work for the department of justice and the leadership has badly soiled the reputation of the department of justice. What is it going to take to restore trust in the department of justice . I think it needs to be. In, and we saw that with Jeff Sessions who i dont agree with on many issues, but he took pride in the department of justice being independent of the president. You need to have an attorney general who understands the importance of the independence of the department of justice that when it is coming to criminal prosecution, there cant be a partisan edge to it, and you have to have the independence in order to pursue justice for all americans, and that is what it is going to take and attorney general who is going to carry out the longstanding tradition of the department of justice. Do you believe, senator, that the thousands of career professionals and the prosecutors and the other professionals in the department of justice will be able to resist what is described as political pressure coming down from the top . I know that there are a lot of people in the department of justice who will not tolerate political interference and we saw it in the stone case where the u. S. Attorneys resigned. If they are required to do things that are wrong, they will leave and not put up with it. We hope that they can get the Leadership Support within the department of justice to carry tout independence, and that is missing with attorney general barr and that is why he should resign. We will see what happens in the coming days. Thank you, senator ben cardin, for joining us. Thank you, wolf. And we will have more on the calls for william barr to resign and will the president stand by him. And we are awaiting a public speech by the former National Security adviser john bolton and is he going to break his silence about the president and ukraine . This is a situation room special report. Fifteen minutes could save you fifteen percent or more. Tonight, a white house official is telling us that President Trump has confidence in attorney general barr despite the growing number of department of justice officials and now more than 2,000 calling for barrs resignation and bringing in the political and legal experts. Now, you signed on to the letter, as a former prosecutor, and why do you think it is important for the attorney general to step down . Le wof, hlf, he is allowing t attorney general to be a personal attorney. It is stor rid departmeied depa does not always get it right, but they do get the job done, and so using him at his personal gain has to stop. And now, suzanne, why is this a potentially powerful rebuke . It is a rebuke because it is people outside of the building speaking for those inside of the building and potentially cannot say it for themselves and what is happening here is undermining the entire work of the Justice Department that it does across america every single day, and how can an assistant u. S. Attorney go into court and argue that the sentencing guidelines are presumptively reasonable and just when Everybody Knows that full well if the defendant is a friend of the president of the United States that he or she can get special rules. And people are focusing on the number of people who signed this letter and more than 2,000 at this point, but the contents of this letter are important, as well, and these are more than 2,000 former federal prosecutor saying that a Law Enforcement apparatus that behaves in this way is not part of the constitutional republic, but part of the autocracy and that is the starkest and the strongest warning to the country about what is happening and the precariousness about the rule of law and the fragile moment that we are in. Now, if bill barr wants to restore the legitimacy of the department of justice and the substance and there is no alternative for him but to resign, and nobody should hold their breath, because he has shown that he is comfortable being the personal fixer of the president of the United States. And wolf, it is important to point out that the ramifications are beyond roger stones sentencing and the narrow legal issues. And Michael Flynn. The United States, and International Institutions are constantly impressing upon the developing countries the need to establish the rule of law, because it is necessary for the confidence in the International Relations of those countries, and the economies of the countries. If this administration continues to raise questions about the rule of law here, that could have bilg, bg, big impacts down road with the United States being the leading diplomatic force in the world and the economy. And now, david axelrod, many people signed on to the letter to give us more credibility with former justices and how much credit of 2000 of them signing this letter . It is unprecedented and it does have a great deal of credibility, but there is only one person who matsers he ermatd that is the president of the United States. And he could look at this and say, well, this is concerning, 2,000 highly respected professionals of both parties are feeling that barr has to go or he would say, hes my guy and he has my back and he is doing what i want and he is going to stay. I am walking through door number two on this one. I think that, thats exactly what is going to happen, and the question is only if barr at some point finds it impossible to do his job, because there is, there is so much concern within the department and people start leaving and it is utter chaos. I mean, that is i guess a possibility that the letter portends, but for the time being, i think that he is doing exactly what the president of the United States put him there to do. And so, i wanted to get to you, who covered the white house for us, and we are told that the confidence of bill barr, and even though he the other day publicly said in the nbc news interview that the president should stop tweeting, because it is undermining the department of justice. And the fact that he still has confidence in bill barr underscores the reason that all of the officials are concerned, because bill barr even though he complained about that, that seemed to be a complaint that the president was complicating his ability to do what the president wants in the first place. So, i am not sure that it is going to tell us a whole lot beyond the fact that the president is quite satisfied. And also, concerning the fact that this is the moment that the individuals chose to speak out. Think of everything that we have seen over the three years of trumps presidency and the one year that bill barr has been attorney general. His interference in sort of the misrepresenting to the public the contents of the mueller report, all kinds of controversial positions that doj and using doj and testing the sort of the boundaries of the political interference throughout the tenure, and yet, this is the moment in which people have not only chosen to resign from the department, but to speak out on the bipartisan basis in the strongest possible terms which is conveying the message to the public how incredibly unusual and significant that we are seeing what happens at doj is. And also, remember, that bill barr was defending President Trump before he was the attorney general and publicly raising doubts about the legitimacy of the mueller investigation. The point of why now is really important and those four prosecutors withdrew from the case, and the idea that there are people from the outside trying to give support to the people inside and it is hard to take a stand that way and many whistleblowers feel isolated and part of the reason that this is called for now is to let the people know that within the department that we have their backs. And everybody standby. We have more coming up and including the latest on the president ial 2020 race, and the thousands turning out ahead of the early voting here ahead of the Nevada Democratic caucuses, and growing focus on the candidate who was not a factor in iowa or New Hampshire. The democratic president ial candidates are focusing in right now on nevada where the caucuses are only five days away, but early voting already started this past week. Thousands of people actually turned out. Our National Correspondent athena jones is joining us from reno. What is the latest there . Hi, wolf. According to the Nevada Democratic party as of 9 00 this morning 26,000 people had taken advantage of the early caucusing here in nevada. This is the first time that people are able to early caucus, and what is notable about the 26,000 number, wolf, it is representing 30 of the total Democratic Caucus turnout in nevada in 2016. So it could be a sign of a big turnout to come. Party Officials Say they are at the happiest to see the people with the enthusiasm standing in long lines to vote, and so turnout could set a record. But of course, all eyes are on nevada, because it is a ku kcau system just like in iowa and the Party Officials are working hard to make sure they dont have the disaster like in iowa. One thing, they are scrapping the app used in iowa and using a combination of the hightech and the low tech methods. One is a caucus calculator on the ipad to help do the math, and tabulate who is going to be counted, and also, a math sheet to post on, and poster to provide transparency to folks there in the site. Another focus has been training to work around the clock to make sure that the volunteers and the caucus site leaders are trained. There is a guide on the site to help with issues of technology and one thing that is interesting here is that there was a webinar training that one of the producers sat in on today and they are saying that the caucus calculator, and they were only able to use the screen shots of it and not the actual calculator the test the actual tool they are calling it. Instead, they could look at the pictures of what it is supposed to look like on caucus day. That is one issue that could leave some volunteers nervous, but they are working hard to avoid what we saw in iowa a couple of weeks ago. Lets hope they succeed in avoiding the disaster in iowa. Athe athena, standby and i wanted to bring in our Political Correspondent david axelrod. Who needs a win in nevada the most . Well, joe biden undoubtedly is the one who has a lot at stake here. He came in and he was the frontrunner until about two weeks ago when the voting began, and had a disastrous night in iowa and worse night in New Hampshire. Their argument is that he needs to get to places with more diverse electorates, and so his Campaign Manager said today he needs a second place in nevada and the first in South Carolina in order to hold the place. And i think that is right. He needs to start showing some science of signs of strength or he is going to be waiting on the outside with Mike Bloomberg with the candidates on the outside. On the other hand, Pete Buttigieg has had two good primaries and caucuses, and he has the show that he can do well in the diverse environment. Elizabeth warren badly needs a reboot. She has had a couple of disappointing results and Amy Klobuchar needs to build on the momentum she showed in New Hampshire. So a lot of people have things on the line here, but biden as the former frontrunner needs to get the joementum back. And a candidate not even on the ballot is affecting the race . Yes, he skipped the first four contests, but he is betting that biden is going to spin off of the track and the others wont have the resources to compete with him and he can become the alternative to Bernie Sanders on the super tuesday when 14 states will vote. He has spent 400 million on the television already. We have never seen anything like it. It is an important week for bloomberg, because if he can get one more poll that qualifies him, he is going to be on the debate stage wednesday night, and the first time that he is really going to have to step out from behind the campaign ads and show what he has, and he is undoubtedly going to become a target, because of the precipitous rise he has shown with the ads. So he is going to have an interesting week. You think that he is going to qualify for the next president ial debate in las vegas wednesday . Yeah, i mean, i think that it is likely that a poll is going to surface between now and then. Because we are seeing them come more quickly now. If i were he, or i were his strategist, i might take some of the hundreds of millions of dollars and pay off every News Organization in america to hold the poll off until thursday so i dont have to submit myself to target practice that he is going to experience there from other candidates who are going to attack him from all angles. But eventually, he has to be on the debate stage and if it is not next week, it is the following week, wolf. So he has had the hiatus which is about to end where he can rely on the tv ads to build the foundation, and maybe it is a smart strategy. You saw it over the weekend that he was getting assaults from various places on his, on the stop and frisk policy in new york, and on the treatment of women at his company and so on. He wants a 90day race from march to june and he did not want a yearlong race and you can see why a shorter race is good for him. We will see if he qualifies for the debates wednesday. And athena, you are tracking all of the candidates, but especially Bernie Sanders, and tell us about the ground game in nevada. Well, wolf, the ground game is important to the Sanders Campaign and you heard it in iowa and New Hampshire and turnout is important to him, and he is constantly talking about how there needs to be a big turnout, and that is what they are hoping to have and more than 250 staff on the ground and 11 offices and since the Field Operations launched in june. They have knocked on over 300,000 doors and Campaign Literature in different languages, and tagala the language of the philippines, and also others. Sanders won the latino vote in 2016, and so that is a target for him. He had a alltown hall led by alexandria ocasio cortez. And so they are hoping to see a big boost from the latinos and it is going to go to sanders. Thank you, david and athena. Important programming note right now. There are five, yes, five president ial town halls on cnn this week all live from las vegas. Tune in tomorrow night, and beginning the at 8 00 p. M. Eastern here on cnn. Over the past four years, china says it has been trying to rout out islamic extremism and terrorism in the Western Region in what it is calling a massive Vocational Training program, but the critics and survivors say it is targeting the muslim minority. Ivan watson obtained rare leaked documents inside of shinjiang and showing the extraordinary level of violence showing that the Chinese Government is rounding up and detaining citizens for the most arbitrary of reasons. Reporter growing a long byrd, and having a passport and these are reasons for what officials are calling landing you in concentration camps in china. Chilling revelations detailed in what appears to be a Chinese Government surveillance report on the citizens leaked from this region in western china where a mass interment policy has forced 2 million muslims from the countrys mostly western uighur minority into detention. These documents are spread sheets of more than 300 families living in one county and contain highly detailed personal information such as national i. D. Numbers and history of foreign travel and religious practices and whether or not they are a threat. The authors believed to be Chinese Government officials then decide whether to keep the individuals into what the Chinese Government calls Vocational Training centers. Beijing wants the world to believe that this mass Job Training Program is routing out violent extremism. But several survivors tell cnn that the reality is that the camps were crowded prisonlike facilities where the inmates were subjected to torture. Due to chinas crackdown and the heavy curtain of censorship and currently defending anything in this area is incredibly difficult. Why yo you here . Reporter in a recent visit to the region, we were harass and blocked and cnns matt rivers was blocked. And however, we tracked down uighurs living in exile who verified the identities of eight of the families profiled in the leaked report. The investigation takes us to istanbul, turkey. Here, i meet this mother of three from to aer ya whose name is on the document. Reporter that is you. Your name . Yes. Reporter her name appeared under case 358 which revealed that her younger sister patnum was sent to a camp in 2018 for supposedly violating the chinas Family Planning policy which is having too many children. Reporter she says this is the first information she has had about her family there since 2016. Many uighurs living overseas say that communication with family back home was cut off when china intensified the crackdown in the area. But some uighurs are risi inkin their lives to expose this sensitive information. This is the first time that you are speaking publicly about these documents . Yes, the first time. Reporter this is a uighur activist living in exile in the netherlands and last summer, he received a trove of documents from a source that he wont identify for their safety. That is my birthday and i got the document and very surprised. Reporter it is anwar along with a patchwork of other uighurs living in exile who are sharing the information with the outside world. This document is like a microcosm of what is happening all over there. Reporter and this is a u. S. Based academic studying what he is convinced are internal Chinese Government d k docume documents. This is the future of authoritarianism, and the future of changing the populations who dont agree with the main regime in terms of ideology, virtuality or other ways. Reporter and these people were sent to interment camps for disagreeing, and others for holding a passport of a foreign country and the most, 114 people were labeled a threat for simply having too many children. Those uighurs were sent to four different camps, all apparently located within the same community. Using other open source Chinese Government documents we were able to find the locations of the four facilities, including the number two Training Center located near the train station. And this is where the older sister was sent according to case number 597 and her offense is having a passport and giving birth to too many children. Rozaniza is feared that her family could be punished more because she is going public. Why are you showing your face to the outside world . [ speaking Foreign Language ] reporter cnn reached out to the Foreign Ministry and the government in writing with detailed questions, but the chinese officials did not respond. Nearly 1800 people have died. A key question given what happened on the diamond princess, is it safe to go on any cruise now . Im not a big fan of cruises. I think for a whole host of reasons we have seen after number of norovirus out breaks on cruises. It causes nausea, vomiting, diarrhea. This is largely because the conditions for the staff is really poor. They are in crowded conditions. They have to work long hours. Reporter experts have told us while hindsight is to 20 20, they should have gotten every one off the ship as soon as they learned of one case of coronavirus and shay should have gotten them to separate quarantines on land, monitored and tested them. That would have reduced transmission among people who had been on that ship. Instead, what they did was in the words of one expert, they stoked the fire. Wolf. Thats pretty sad.
