The night sky as bloody protests ripped through ukraines capital. A lot is at stake for the European Union. At least 14 people are dead and americans are being warned to stay indoors. Phil black is joining us from kiev right now. Phil is on the phone. What is the latest . Because these pictures have been so dramatic all day. It reminds me of Tahrir Square in cairo. Reporter it certainly has a revolutionary feel to it. Im standing across from the fires and that live feed and im surrounded by thousands of people. The forces tried to force their way through here earlier this evening. They broke through some of their lines and barricades. And now they are rebuilding those barricades. They have lit those bonfires to create really burning embers across roads. Its part of an attempt to keep back the Security Forces. Certainly the language coming from the Ukrainian Government clearly blames them for the violence that are taking place on the streets of kiev. The people surrounding me refute that but they believe the government is going to use that violence today as an excuse to counter here and do something that they have no doubt been trying to do for a couple of months now and that is to clear out the square that has been under protest since november. I know our connection is not that great. Understandably, phil. But what the government there in kiev, they are with putin in moscow. Those in the opposition who are resisting, they want to have a better relationship with the European Union and with the United States. Is that the big issue or are there other domestic issues that we need to know about . Reporter well, that was really the issue that triggered all of this. They want the ukraine to be closer to europe. The government said no we want to be closer to russia. Its a change in thes cou constitution that would lessen the powers of the president because they believe that the country is with them and wants to go closer to europe. Certainly the country is divided somewhere close to 50 50 pro europe, pro russia. But the people around me here on the streets certainly want the president and the government to go. And it looks like theres no easing of opposition of what is going on right now. It looks as intense as it was a few hours ago. I think weve lost our connection with phil black. Hes in kiev. I want to go to our own Nick Paton Walsh who is joining frus from sochi. You know kiev and the ukraine. Youve reported from there quite frequently. Specifically, what is at stake here, specifically for the west, for the United States . Reporter well, this is the long decade at least drawn out, almost battle if you were, about which direction the country goes. It is split in many ways itself between an east that faces towards russia that is close industrially to russias economy and a west that sees poland economy right next door and wants in on that. The language is different, too, but they share one government and its being attorney between those two ideas. Whats at stake in the immediate short term is the safety and the lives of those in that square because many are concerned at this point and Viktor Yanukovych has his back against the wall. Those protests, too, are boxed in and he politically has tried negotiation, didnt get him where he wanted. They were all about removing him from power, really and in terms of his sponsor, most hard liners want to see him take a firmer line against the protests. Thats what were seeing on the streets maybe now. And the question that people are worried about is nobody anticipated this to happen in the middle of the sochi games behind me, that Vladimir Putin would want this to play out at all slammed in the middle of his 51 billion spectacle. It seems like the police are reacting to the events on the ground rather than dictating them. Thats very dangerous, wolf. And from the u. S. Perspective, tell us how the United States fits into this battle that is now on the streets of the ukrainian capital. Reporter i have to say, the u. S. s position of this has not been that theyve wanted to discourage violence and i think in many ways they would like to see Viktor Yanukovych to swing in a western direction, too. Colin powell and the Bush Administration laid it on thick trying to get the west and failed in many ways, the president to deliver on what he promised. Now the country swung back towards russia, towards Viktor Yanukovych, who was the opponent way back then. The question for the u. S. Is this massive country that sits between russia and eastern euro europe as well, vital to the identity and russias political orbit. Does it move towards moscow or the u. S. . The u. S. Wants the latter to happen. Many ukrainians want that happen, too. And the wider issue at stake here is the influence over different parts of the european continent. That is what is playing out here. The u. S. Has taken their eyes off the ball in the last few months. The russians have shown and thats why yanukovych was able to go in the direction because theyve offered billions of cash to bail the economy out and keep people in jobs, frankly. So i think thats what were seeing play out here. We havent heard the same strident statements that we heard back in 2004 from the white house yet but if this violence continues, we may well. Those pictures are so dramatic. I assume well be hearing a lot more from the administration. Nick paton walsh, thank you very much. Elise labott is here. From the u. S. Perspective, we havent heard a lot of condemnation or major statements coming in from the secretary of state or secretary of defense. They are talking about it but im not hearing a lot of outrage yet. Thats because they are concerned about two things, wolf. A, they are concerned about the government cracking down on the square and trying to clear out all of the protests and dont want to he sue the government make a dramatic move. But when you see these pictures, the opposition has a lot of responsibility here, too. They are reaching out to the opposition to say, look, you have to dial this back. We have been in support of your protests and your right to speak your mind. But they certainly dont want to see what they are seeing right now. The state department is sending out a warning to u. S. Citizens on the ground stay inside, do not get outside. Not only do they not want u. S. Citizens to get caught up in the violence but they also understand that the government is going to make a pretty major crackdown on the square and dont want the u. S. Citizens to get caught up on that . The winter Olympic Games are not far away in sochi, russia. Will the u. S. Become more assertive, shall we say, or are they going to let the ukrainians handle this by themselves . Theres a limit to what that part of the world is, after all. Well, you saw last week. I think the reason that this has taken people by surprise is that there was some progress in terms of getting the government and opposition to sit down and possibly work on a National Unity government. We had that blip with Victoria Nuland talking about the european involvement. Thats because the u. S. Wanted the europeans to get a lot more involved and be tougher and use the power of the purpose not just in terms of helping the economy but threatening sanctions. There are sanctions ready to go if theres a crack down on the square if the government does not take moves to put together a National Unity government but i think nick is very correct in saying that this is about proxy between the u. S. And russia. Hold on a second. Youre hearing those explosions now rocking the streets of kiev right now. Every few seconds i can only hope that more people arent being hurt or killed. There is another one just there as well. Established by for a moment. Barbara starr is monitoring what is going on from her Vantage Point over at the pentagon. Barbara, what are they saying over there about the explosions, these firebombs, all of this violence thats now unfolding in kiev . Ive spoken to some u. S. Military officials in the last few minutes. So far, no requests from the u. S. Ambassador there, we are told, for any u. S. Military involvement for specific assistance to get american citizens out of there. That could change in the coming hours if this grows worse. They are very aware here of the advisory for americans to stay away, to stay indoors, to not get caught up in this. But you know, the u. S. Military has a very strong relationship with some of the nations in this region and, in fact, the marines and navy are planning a deployment to the black sea shortly and will go into this region. Well see if they make any port calls in the ukraine, if this violence continues. That may be one of the first things to go because typically you will not find them u. S. Military document countries that engage in this kind of activity. Thats a very Strong Military diplomatic signal that can be sent. But, you know, im with you and elise and nick is, i watch this and this seems to be out right military action, by all accounts, against these civilians. Pictures are so dramatic. Were going to stay on top of the breaking news in kiev. Look at what is going on on the streets of kiev, the capital of ukraine. New explosions rock the capital right after this. The breaking news out of kiev in the ukraine. All of this happening in the middle of the winter Olympic Games. Explosions rocking kiev. These are live pictures that are unfolding in kiev. Reporters are watching together with all of us, jim sciutto is here, elise labott, barbara starr. Jim, you see these dramatic pictures. It reminds me of even more dramatic of what we saw at Tahrir Square which was the beginning of the arab spring. No question. We like popular evolutions. These are happy stories. When the arab spring was starting, we thought these stories would begin and end happily. Of course, they didnt. I think to some degree we imagine that urp europe is insulated from that violence and they are not. In the weeks leading up to the olympics, we were talking about terrorists that might disturb the games. But this is what were seeing now. You are hearing explosions. God only know what is is going on on the streets. I have no idea where they are coming from, elise, but these are powerful images that are unfolding. What a huge embarrassment for the russian president Vladimir Putin coming in the middle of the winter Olympic Games. Thats right. He sends a message to yanukovych, listen, thats why this had calmed down for the last few weeks. If you remember, these protests were really violent a few weeks ago. The u. S. Got involved in mediating and we thought maybe we would see an end to this because the russians were cracking down on the president , listen, we dont want any trouble during these olympics. Everything needs to be pressed on russia being an example here and obviously that would shine a positive light on its relationship with the ukraine. Eli is joining us from the daily beast. Youre hearing these explosions going on right now. I assume officials at the state department, pentagon, Intelligence Committee, they are monitoring this very closely . I think they are not only monitoring it very closely but they are asking themselves can the government survive and are we now seeing russias expansion to its near or abroad. Could you envision the russians, the regime, the government of Vladimir Putin allowing to take over in kiev and move away towards the eu . I could not envision that at this point, no. What do you think the russians would do to prevent that from happening . Would they start sending troops . I dont want to get ahead of my skis right now but i think the russians are watching this ve very closely and want to make sure that their influence are in power. Barbara starr, i know officials there are watching it very carefully, the civilians, the defense. What are you hearing, barbara . Wolf, the Intelligence Committee also watching this very crowsly. What they are going to have to calculate here is what is the news after this horrific situation . What is the new security relationship not just with the ukraine but with this region of Eastern Europe and, indeed, with the russians if they are sanking th sanctionsing this. This looks like its out right civilians on the street whether its carried out by military or Police Forces or interior ministry forces, this is a level of fire power far beyond what is acceptable to the United States. I mean, we are at the point that the u. S. Embassy told all americans not to leave their homes tonight in kiev. They knew something was coming and this is what it has shaped up to be. This now means the u. S. Has to calculate what kind of relationship it wants, will it still interact with this government in the ukraine . How can it interact with them . And what message it sends to the other nations in the region. The u. S. Historically has a very Strong Military security and economic relationship with the nations bordering the black sea and many of them in recent years, this could throw all of that into disarray. Wolf . And were just getting word right now, its fascinating, barbara, because phil black is joining us on the phone from kiev. Hes there on the streets reporting for us. Phil, were just getting word that the ukrainian opposition lead has arrived at yanukovychs office for talks. This is according to the spokesman for the opposition leader. Explain what potentially this could mean. Because the violence, the explosions that were hearing, they seem to be escalating even though its approaching its after midnight now in kiev. Just a few moments ago, wolf, we saw what is described as Russian Security forces that drove through some of the opposition lines here. They are surrounded by Security Forces with shields and protective gear trying to drive their way through. Crowd and that triggered enormous panic here. Some of the thousands of people here are fleeing in one direction and then others running in the opposite direction trying to build up their line with the barricade. This went on for a few minutes. Happened grenades were thrown to further scare the crowds but then the Security Forces withdrew and now they are behind the smoke and fire. It certainly reinforces the feeling here to drive to keep the crowd out tonight. People feel fear that its going to happen, wolf. Hold on for a second, phil, because jim sciutto is here. The fire flames that were seeing there, the explosions, this looks potentially very deadly. It looks like fireworks. Its important to talk about why this is happening. We talk a lot about the pull between the east and west in asia or the middle east. Right now were seeing it happen in europe. This is home territory. You know, we imagine this battle ended in 1989 with the fall of the wall but here you have this is the ukraine, a country split by this very question. Which sphere are they in . And youre seeing this break into gunfire here. Its not that all ukrainians want to move to the west. This is a country in turmoil because ukrainians speak russia and have strong ties to russia and thats why not only was president yanukovych under a lot of pressure from the u. S. And the west to move towards europe but he was also under pressure from russia and a lot of ukrainians themselves to move closer to russia. This is by no means president yanukovych going against all of the ukrainian people. This is an ethnic split, nationals who want to be close to the European Union and the United States as opposed to the ethnic russians who want to be closer to moscow. Exactly. Thats why the u. S. And europeans have pulled out all of the stops to say that your future lies with the u. S. Now, they have could have used the power of the purse a little more effectively to say theres aid that can come with that. Its not just the partnership with europe you can have a better relationship. They made it about, we dont want to see you under russias iron fist. But the u. S. Has put all of the stops to say move towards the u. S. And youve heard secretary kerry say, this is not a bidding war are russia. Its very much a bidding war for russia for the heart of ukraine and this country is by no means settled on that question. The death toll seems to be increasing even as we speak, eli. You cover the state department and i assume they are meeting there and the u. S. Has a very significant embassy in kiev right now but there is deep concern for the safety not only of the american diplomats but the american citizens who may be over there. I think thats a major factor and also seeing these images on television will make it harder for president obama to compartmentalize and whether they will continue to cooperate. I think it will make it difficult particularly in congress to have the reset that president obama had hoped for in his first term. I think if there was a death of the reset, were watching it on our screens right now. The death toll continues to mount even as we speak. Joe johns is at the white house for us today. Joe, what are you hearing over there . Reporter wolf, this happened earlier today at the press briefing with jay carney. He said that the administration condemns the violence and also says that Excessive Force on either side will not resolve the crisis and he said that the president yanukovych should deescalate immediately the situation and end the confrontation. Also said the Administration Urges him to restart a dialogue with opposition leaders to develop a consensus and said the Vice President has been having conversations with the president of the ukraine but didnt have an update on any of that. So that happened earlier today and certainly not as we see these pictures unfold on television but well be checking back with the administration for an update. Its very clear they are monitoring the situation very closely, wolf. Im sure they are, even as the president is getting ready for his big visit to mexico tomorrow. Jim sciutto, just got this in. The Ukrainian Interior Ministry announcing that seven Police Officers were killed in todays violence in kiev. Earlier the interior Ministry Said the police had confirmed seven protesters, one other person also killed. The overall death toll for this day now 15. Almost 300 people have been injured. So if seven Police Officers have been killed lets say in these demonstrations, you know the pressure is going to be on the regime, the government in kiev to respond with brutal force. Absolutely. And you also have reports that protesters lit government buildings on fire. The violence is going in both directions here. And as you say, its hard for the government not to respond in those circumstances and i think the white house earlier in the day made that point encouraging both sides to refrain from violence here. And this shows a situation spiralling out of control. And i have to say, looking at these pictures here, it harkens back to tinamen square. I think were watching history unfold here. Its a sad moment to watch. Whether tahrir, were continuing to watch the breaking news out of kiev. Were going to stay on top of the other important stories. New information that the Obama Administration may be ready to potentially set a new precedent by freeing terrorist subjects to gain the release of u. S. Army sergeant who has been listed as missing, captured by the taliban since 2009 in afghanistan. Lets get the very latest once again from our pentagon correspondent barbara starr. What are you learning, barbara . Wolf, nothing is more sensitive for the u. S. Military than one of their own missing and captured, even his family today reacting to this latest news. Release me, please, im begging you. The u. S. Has be gone new talks to get sergeant bo Bowe Bergdahl back after four years in captivity. Bring me home, please. Most likely the per initial gulf nation of qatar, the u. S. Is looking to see what it would cost to get bergdahl free. He apparently walked away from his base in eastern afghanistan in 2009. Its believed that the taliban Network Inside pakistan has him. The taliban in the past has demanded the release of five prisoners from guantanamo bay. We do have a long history of talking and dealing with all manner of bad guys. So if the United States can make progress on returning this soldier back to the United States, we need to do it. The Washington Post is reporting that the u. S. Has now agreed to release all five taliban prisoners simultaneously to the qataries to guarantee bergdahls release. Administration officials will say little other than they have never given up trying to get bergdahl back. We are not involved in active negotiations with the taliban. Clearly, if negotiations do resume at some point, well want to talk with the taliban about the safe return of Sergeant Bergdahl . The family issued a statement saying, we are cautiously optimistic. These discussions will lead to the safe return of our son. There is growing urgency as u. S. Troops could be gone from afghanistan by the end of the year. Were running out of time. I think this administration has decided that we will not have a longterm presence in afghanistan. And bergdahl appeared frail in an unclassified video made in december. The existence of the video was first reported on cnn. Officials say his declining health only adds to the determination to bring him home. And this is now entering a very, very sensitive stage and they cant say whether the taliban will react and how they will react to the latest u. S. Overtures. Wolf . I want to ask the question because over these many, many years, successive u. S. President s, success i have administrations have always said that the u. S. Does not negotiate with terrorists, period. How did they finesse this . That will be very interesting to see. The Washington Post reporting that they may turn him over to the custody of the qataries. Its going to be very delicate going. The u. S. Doesnt negotiate with terrorists but the u. S. Always talks or frequently talks, i should say, to bad guys, to people thats in opposition. This is not unprecedented. How they finesse it will, in fact, be the question. Barbara starr at the pentagon, thank you. Just ahead, another potentially very dramatic story were watching. Rock star ted nugent recently leveled a vicious and vial slur against the president of the United States with language reminiscent of the nazis but that wasnt enough to keep him from appearing with a right wing rocker today. Tom foreman has been looking into this story for us. Tom, what are you seeing . Wolf, in the right circles in texas, this is quite an uproar. People are very upset. On the other hand, ted nugent can be loud and shocking. But with the proper audience, he can be enormously popular and that carries a political punch. The motor city madman is making plenty of people furious with voters who allow a communist chicago raised subhuman mongrel like Barack Hussein obama to weasel his way into the top seat. Reporter describing jews in that same interview, nugent invoked a racial slur using the word chimpanzee, an apparent reference to the president. I think america will be america again when barack obama, eric holder, hillary clinton, dick durbin, michael bloomberg, and all of the liberal democrats are in jail. My friend, greg abbott. Reporter yet, none of that stopped gubernatorial candidate greg abbott from welcoming nugent to the campaign trail. A move that wendy davis quickly called an insult to every texan and repulsive. Its offensive. Deeply offensive to voters. But his support of the Second Amendment, for at least some Republican Base voters is so strong it trumps all of that. Anybody that wants to disarm me can drop dead. Fire in the hole. Reporter nugents following is so strong that Current Governor rick perry and contender mitt romney both welcomed his support, despite his explosive language. If you dont know that our government is wiping its [ bleep ] with the constitution, youre living under a rock someplace. Reporter and through it all, the antigovernment rock show has rolled on. If barack obama becomes the president in november again, i will either be dead or in jail by this time next year. Obviously he said that during the last election. And republicans are certainly aware that nugents wild talk could cost them. For example, they would like to draw more women to their party and yet nugent has called feminist fat pigs and that could cause a problem with many different women but for now many are saying that the reward is worth the risk and they are trying to thread the needle. Abbott, for example, issued a statement saying, hey, ted nugent is endorsing us. Were not endorsing him. But it is a thin line to walk. It certainly is. Tom foreman, thank you for that background. Oth is it time for republicans to distance themselves from ted nugent . Lets bring in our chief political analyst gloria borger. Its vial, disgusting, racist language and he was welcomed on to the stage with the republican gubernatorial candidate in the state of texas. In the state of texas, there are many conservatives who are worried about look at what happened in ted cruzs race, wolf. He ran to the right of the republican candidate in the primary and he won by running to the right. In texas, some people believe you cant run far enough to the right. There are also republicans in texas i spoke to who said, look, there are divisions within the Republican Party about whether this is so far. Now, you know, you saw the Abbott Campaign didnt endorse what he was saying but they didnt distance themselves from nugent either. So i think this has yet to play itself out. Dont forget, texas is a state that hasnt had a democratic governor in almost two decades. Barack obama lost there by 16 points. I well remember that. Yeah. Gloria, thanks very, very much. Much more on ted nugents jawdropping slurs against president obama. Ill talk about that with the crossfire host newt gingrich. Jaw dropping slurs against president obama by the rock star ted nugent. Lets talk about that and more with newt gingrich. Thanks for joining us. You hear me okay, right . I hear you fine. Good. Lets talk about ted nugent. He says a lot of crazy, vial slurs over the years. The outrage is that the republican candidate governor is willing to embrace him and invite him to go on the campaign trail after he calls the president of the United States a subhuman mongrel. Would you do that if you were running for office . No. I always love selective media outrage. The democrats have lots of donors and supporters who say truly stupid things. Lets go right to the heart of the democratic party. The saturday before the 2012 election al gore went to a black church and charged. In 2012 Vice President biden went to a black audience and said if the republicans win within 100 days they will put you back in chains. Why isnt there some accountability for tremendously outrageous statements by democratic elected officials, not just entertainers . I think there is a double standard here. I dont support it. He is a big supporter of the Second Amendment which i am. In this case it is not a smart thing to do. I think the level of selective outrage particularly on the entertainment level where they often day after day say much more vicious things about republicans, it is funny to watch. The phrase subhuman mongrel, you are familiar with this because you are a student of world war ii, when the nazis referred to jews as subhuman mongr mongrels, there is a history to that phrase. You cannot have it both ways. Im not saying i want to have it both ways. Im saying the republican candidate for governor of texas should not be appearing with someone who refers to the president of the United States as a subhuman mongrel. That is the question. Democrats are stupid, too. They make similarly ridiculous comments. If they go on the stage with someone who viciously attacked a republican i would call them out. In this particular case the man who wants to be the next governor of texas is willing to go out there and embrace someone who refers to our president as a subhuman mongrel. Look, i think it is a bad thing to have said. I wish he hadnt said it. I think the selective outrage let me go back to joe biden. Are you going to refuse to hear from joe biden until he apologizes for suggesting he will put you all in chains referring to a black audience. There is a lot of stupid stuff said out there. If a republican says something stupid you should condemn it. If a democrat says something stupid you should condemn that. Leaders should not embrace people who make shethese statements. I would love to have the media condemn a major democrat for vicious things they have said. I have never seen it done. I think this is entirely selective outrage. Im not defending ted nugent. I think what he said was wrong and he shouldnt have said it. I think the outrage is remarkably selective. Lets talk about outrage for what you said about john kerry, the secretary of state. Listen to this. Climate change can now be considered another weapon of mass destruction, perhaps even the worlds most fearsome weapon of mass destruction. To which you tweeted this. You said every american who cares about National Security must demand kerrys resignation, a delusional secretary of state is dangerous. Tell us why you think he is delusional and dangerous. You showed it for 30 minutes on cnn. Look at the violence in kiev and syria and iraq and the iranians trying to get a nuclear weapon. Look at the 100 plus Nuclear Weapons that we have in pakistan. Look at the Chinese Nuclear arsenal. This is not some u. S. Senator just setting a wild speech to please the left. This is the secretary of state of the United States of america at an International Forum saying that the greatest threat is Global Climate change during a year, by the way, in which his facts were just wrong. He had a whole series of statements that were false. I think it is, again, fine for u. S. Senators because there are 100 of them. The secretary of state ought to be held to a standard of seriousness that this speech falls short of. Check your record. All of us remember nancy pelosi video that the two of you were sitting on the stage. Back in 2007 you appear with thensenator john kerry and spoke about Global Climate change. And the two of you had this exchange. We dont always see eye to eye, do we, newt . No. But we do agree our country must take action to address Climate Change. That was the first video to which you later said that was a blunder on your part. You shouldnt have appeared on that sofa with her. With nancy pelosi. Here is the exchange you had with kerry. Im excited to hear you talk about the urgency, i really am. Given that all beit you have a different approach, what would you say to senator inhofe and others resisting science . What is your message today . My message is that the evidence is sufficient that we should move towards the most effective possible steps to reduce carbon loading of the atmosphere. And do it urgently. Yes. And do it urgently now. Do you still agree with kerry on that point . I think it is perfectly rational to say that as at matter of prudence we should limit carbon loading to the atmosphere. To go from that statement, declare that it is a weapon of mass destruction and that we should adopt trillions and trillions of dollars of changes, centralizing power and bureiocracies over something which may or may not occur over the next 100 years particularly since 2007 the evidence has not been very good. We have been in a 15 or 16 year pause which the climate fanatics are trying to explain. The arctic ice last year has grown dramatically from the year before. The Antarctic Ice has grown dramatically. I think there is a lot of evidence to have a rational conversation. Read kerrys speech. He rejects any opportunity for a rational conversation. He says everybody who disagrees should be kicked out of the room and then declares that this is more dangerous than nuclear war. I think that is a delusional statement and very troubling to secretary of state who believes Climate Change is a danger. I am prepared to defend the argument that nuclear war is a far bigger threat to our society than Climate Change. I cant believe we can have a secretary of state who presumably is instructing the state department to follow his speech which i think would be a disaster for the United States. Just to be precise you still want him to resign because of those comments . Absolutely. If he believes them and i assume he does i think it is dangerous to have a person who believes that as secretary of state. Fine as a senator, terrible as secretary of state. Newt gingrich, as usual good discussion and good debate that we have on whether or not the republican candidate for governor should be distancing himself from someone who calls the president of the United States a racist term as ted nugent did. Well continue this conversation about ted nugent and a lot more, well continue to watch what is going on. One more question. Just to be precise. Your not clearly as outraged as greg abbottt, the republican candidate for embracing ted nugent as clearly i am. No. Not at all. First of all, i think to suggest that ted nugent knowingly used a term with a world war ii reference i think is a total misunderstanding of who ted nugent is. I think he was talking and he talks stupidly. There are lots of hollywood left wing stars that talk stupidly and doesnt stop them from getting to the white house and from getting invited on stages. Some entertainers are stupid sometimes. No republican elected official i know of has ever been as viciously racist as gore was the saturday before the election or as biden was in 2012. Neither was called out by the news media. Newt gingrich, as usual, thanks for joining us. Breaking news we are following. Riot Police Charge into a group of protesters. The ukraine capital in flames and crisis. And being dragged into an explosive confrontation. New details of a massive hacking of the u. S. Navys computers. It caused grave concern that iran is to blame. An olympic break down. American skier bode miller talks about the interview and the controversy it created. Stand by for his candid conversation. Im wolf blitzer. Youre in the situation room. This is cnn breaking news. We begin with breaking news. A fiery and deadly show down and it is now spreading to a number of regions. Riot Police Charged into a Massive Group of protesters. We have much more on that in a moment. The breaking news that is happening in kiev and the possible fallout for the United States. First, a new warning today from irans military that it is prepared to fight the United States in the damaging of widening cyber war as we get new information about a massive hacking deep into the u. S. Navy and marine corps computer network. Penetrated by hackers who were clearly sophisticated and able to get through security filters. Reporter a u. S. Defense official tells cnn of a massive cyber attack on the Navy Computer network. A breach so severe it took about two months and cost about 10 billion to repair. The attackers entered the internet last august or september through a security gap in one of the websites. Poor security the official says allowed them to migrate deep into the network and stay there. The ability to sit on the military network for several months poses real risks to operations and personnel. This would have been really risky in the event of a conflict. Reporter wall street journal reports iran was behind the attack. In recent days told College Students they are agents in a media war. We couldnt get response from iranian officials to reports on the navy website attack but said iran is a victim of Cyber Attacks from the west including the 2010 virus which dealt a significant blow to Irans Nuclear program. The iranian government is under the perception that it is under attack by the United States and israel, that its enemies are targeting its nuclear infrastructure, its oil and gas sector and gathering information through cyber warfare against iran. So the iranian government has devolved its own Cyber Capabilities to counter that. Reporter as for the navy attack the u. S. Official says it targeted an unclassified set of websites. The official says no data was stolen, nothing was damaged and says the hackers did not penetrate classified networks but the websites targeted did have users. The official said there was no indication that any accounts were compromised. Says the navy ordered a surge of warriors to counter the attack, response code named operation rolling tide. The man in charge of that vice admiral Michael Rogers who president obama nominated to head the nsa. Admiral rogers is not commenting on this. Very disturbing report. Lets get to Irans Nuclear threat potentially out there. A tough round of negotiations got underway today. Supreme leader says he is not optimistic the talks will lead anywhere. Lets bring in jim sciutto for the latest. You have the supreme leader, a fire brand and then the foreign minister and president as the charmer. You do have Nuclear Negotiations going on and successful interim nuclear deal. Right now what you are hearing from both sides is temping down of expectations. U. S. Officials saying they are as likely to not reach a deal as to reach one. Reporter from what all sides called the most difficult round of nuclea talks the mood was surprisingly light. Irans foreign minister took the unusual step of addressing the American Public directly from the talks, skyping with students from the university of denver which doctor zarif attended as a graduate student in the 1980s. It is really possible to reach an agreement because of a single overriding fact and that is we have no other option. If you want to resolve this issue the only way to resolve it is through negotiations. Reporter back in tehran, irans most powerful leader had a different message disparaging the talks and the idea of negotiating with the u. S. Translator the Nuclear Issue is an excuse for their hostility, even if the Nuclear Issue is resolved to the satisfaction of the americans another issue will follow. Reporter u. S. Officials s say including the number and the reactor. Hanging over the negotiations, as well, the fate of three americans believed held in iran. I have been held here reporter cia operative robert levinsohn. Pastor, and foreign u. S. Marine whose imprisonment just past 900 days. They expect to be taken seriously. They are going to have to do things on their own. They will have to take unilateral action to demonstrate seriousness. Releasing amir would be a tangible way of doing that. Reporter the west including the u. S. Insisting that iran fess up to past lies about the Nuclear Program as part of any deal. They are asking iran to do so in writing. They have kept Nuclear Facilities secret and only discovered by western intelligence services. As part of deal to guarantee iran will be a good actor they want them to say yes. In the past we did lie and Going Forward we wont. An enormous amount at stake for all of us right now. Jim sciutto thanks very much. We get back to the breaking news, the deadly riots and mayhem. I will ask about the explosive situation in the ukraine and how it could create more tensions between president s obama and putin. Ith nearly 7 million investors. Oh hey, neill, how are you . Look at these pictures coming in, protesters fighting to stand their ground against riot police and deadly clashes. At least 19 people are dead. Officials say the conflict is spreading to other regions right now. There is a lot to talk about with christopher hill. He is now dean of the school of International Studies at the university of denver. Thanks for joining us. I want to talk about iran. Lets talk ukraine right now. This looks deadly. It looks ugly. The stakes are enormous for everyone. One group, the opposition, wants closer ties with the eu and the United States. And the other group wants to be totally aaligned with the government in moscow. Where does the United States fit into this . First of all, this is a really tough situation. Ukraine has been a country that has always had the eastern ukraine, western ukraine, different attitudes and speaking a different language. So this is a tough situation. What has really happened today is a kind of situation where they have gone in to clear the square. I think it is from the point of view the United States trying to find some way forward. At the same time understanding that ukraine is not some island. It sits right next to russia. And so its not so easy, this issue of dealing with ukraine identity. It is a very tough issue. I suspect the Obama Administration would move forward cautiously. I would not be surprised if sanctions were in the offering in the future. Let me read to you part of the Statement Released from the Vice President s office. The white house putting this out. Vice President Joe Biden called the ukraine president. He called to pull back Government Forces and exercise maximum restraint. The Vice President made clear the United States condemns violence by any side but the government bears special responsibility to deescalate the situation. He under scored the urgency of immediate dialogue to put forward serious proposals for political reform. United states is committed to supporting efforts to promote a peaceful resolution to the crisis that reflects the will and aspirations of the people. Those are nice diplomatic words. Give us your interpretation from what you are hearing from the white house. I think the word grave you usually really mean it and are really looking for changes. I served as ambassador in poland for four years. Duringt that time people worried a lot about ukraine and about the capacity of this country to split apart because there is really no consensus on where the country wants to go as much as the opposition wants to go closer to the European Union others want to go closer to russia. The difference between russia and the soviet union would be a russia that somehow joined with ukraine. I think there are high stakes and a number of countries, poland, especially very concerned about the direction of this. So im sure our state department, our Vice President very much in touch with those countries especially the newer countries in the European Union including poland. Those are very tough words that the Vice President has issued. I would hope the leadership is listening very carefully. Me, too. Lets talk about iran, another major issue facing the United States. You had the foreign minister zarif speak to your students at the university of denver today via skype. That is pretty extraordinary in and of itself. Do you think the deal is a good deal for the United States . This interim nuclear deal . Can the iranian government be trusted . Well, you know, i think here again in the case of iran i think there is definitely a split in the leadership about whether they want this deal or not. There is also an effort to say if you want to be pessimistic we can be pessimistic, too. I must say i posed that question to the foreign minister. I said, how are you feeling about this . Are you optimistic . Are you pessimistic . He professed to be somewhat optimistic. He said he thinks they can meet the july deadline in terms of coming up with a deal. I think my own view is this is worth pursuing and this is, i think, the best solution for everybody. Certainly foreign minister put on the table that he didnt feel leaving force on the table which has always been a u. S. Position is somehow an acceptable position. I must say he didnt try to answer questions like if this is for peaceful means then why do you have an underground facility for uranium enrichment . Why at iraq are you building a plutonium based power plant, a reactor . Those are very good questions that the u. S. Negotiators have. We are going to have to leave it there because our clock is ticking over here. We will continue this conversation. Thanks, as usual, for joining us. We will take a quick break and more breaking news right after this. Starts with freshlymade pasta, and 100 real cheddar cheese. But what makes Stouffers Mac n cheese best of all. Com. American skier bode miller sat down with Rachael Nicholls at the olympics. You have been through the ringer in some ways. How are you feeling . It was a tough start to the olympics, come in here and skied well. And then the weather shifted on us and i didnt make the right adjustments. It switched from a condition that i do really well in to a condition that i dont do really well in. It is hard mentally to make thoez adjustments when you are my age. I have to ask you a question. You mentioned perhaps you should have gotten corrective surgery for your eyes . I have a relationship with an eye doctor in denver. We started a procedure. He did part of this where they poke a little hole in your iris and then we got delayed once. And he couldnt do it a second time. We were supposed to be flying to europe to do it. And then the season started. And it just kind of slipped through the cracks. To come in here and have the visibility play such a huge role in the races with overcast conditions. In hind sight obvious. Ski racing in general not necessarily something you get better at as you get older. You are 36 and you managed. It was one of those records or stats that is kind of funny. It is underhanded. You are really old. Good job. I feel like im competitive with the best guys in the world. I came in here really confident. I hope i can stay that way. We see there and looks like you are talking to somebody. You had a pretty emotional interview with Kristin Cooper and got a lot of controversy back in the states afterwards. I was really surprised. I felt like it was me, not her. She asked questions that i feel like with her knowledge of my brother and the situation, i felt like were pretty normal questions. Maybe from other peoples perspective she kept pushing. I think she is really comfortable with me. I felt terrible that she was getting massacred in the press and social media. I think in the end people will sort of see that it was more me just dealing with emotions and the buildup of several years of very tough personal stuff. A lot of people who dont know your brothers story. He had a motorcycle crash how long ago . It was 06. It was super tough on us. We didnt know if he would recover or be alive. After he recovered and turned out over the course of six years or seven years he had five seizures. He didnt have a lot. They were all really critical. He had one on a chair lift and fell. Another one on the highway which would have been awful. So it was kind of not that we knew something was ever going to happen. We all hoped it would be fine but it was just a really tough thing to go through and a tough process to deal with. And through that time as he was dealing with the seizures he is also a great snowboarder and had hoped to join you at these olympics. What conversations did you have . He set his goal to come to this olympics. That is part of the reason why i was staying with it and coming back to race so we would be here together and hopefully win together. And when he did have the seizures and died from that, did that make you rethink coming to the olympics . It didnt change my feelings about the olympics at all. It was just an emotional moment that kind of like, emotions i think live inside of you no matter what. When you have that you can feel like a ball of energy in there. I didnt intentionally do it but it certainly came out in that super g. Looking back it probably made the difference for me between getting a medal and not. The real part of it hits afterwards when you deal with the consequences of living the emotions. It was really pretty raw and painful. If you think that thinking of him in that experience is what pushed you over the edge is there a nice part to that . Absolutely. If you lose a family member, a loved one, i dont think there is anything more to honor their memory than to use that memory eand the love for them to do something that maybe you couldnt do otherwise. And that felt great but it also was painful. We are going to continue to stay on top of the breaking news unfolding on the streets of kiev right now with live pictures coming in from the capital. The death toll is increasing. A lot of people are injured. You hear live explosions on going right now. It is approaching 1 30 a. M. We will continue to watch. Stay with cnn for all the breaking news. Thats it for me. Im wolf blitzer in the situation room. Cross fire starts right now. Tonight on
