What approach is best here, do you think . President trump is just kicking and screaming like the child he often is. While he is entitled to file lawsuits, ask for recounts, the reality is joe biden won this election and the fact that they are unable to have an ascertainment of this election and not able to start the peaceful and critical transition has that has gone on efficiently in every other election is really going to harm the United States. Joe biden needs access to not security information. He needs access to information about what is happening in the agencies with regard to the covid epidemic. He is entitled to resources to begin his transition. And that lack of ascertainment is highly problematic. Something that has not been withheld while lawsuits or recounts have taken place in the past. What do you think about bidens approach here . He is clearly trying to take the approach of staying calm, cool, collected and turning down the temperature. Do you think that is the right approach right now . I do. I think joe biden is taking the right exact approach. The American People know this election was won by joe biden. They expect a seamless transition. They dont expect on sitting president to hold on to the oval office because he thinks its his right. That is not the america we know and he is not following the protocols or the normal in an election transition. There is, obviously, the difference between the president out wardly conceding and letting the transition take place. If the president never concedes and people im speaking to are saying that is the last thing he will ever do is actually concede but they think he will leave the white house in january. Is that acceptable . Does that give you any reassurance . I personally does not need to say any magic work and personally does not need to concede but he has to let the gsa do the ascertainment who won the election to resources can flow to bidens team so he can continue to do the analysis and background checks for the 4,000 political appointees is going to need to appoint in the next several months. What is the plan for democrats during this period right now . After the election, preinauguration, you have a president who is contesting the results of this election. What is the game plan for democrats . This was not a surprise the president would be doing this. He forecasted this. We have our lawyers. We are doing everything that is appropriate in these litigations that the president has filed. But politically, we are all hands on deck in georgia. We have two senate races that will go to runoffs in january. And if we win those two races, it shifts the balance of power and now we would have a governing majority in the u. S. Senate, which means we could then really govern and help joe biden put forward his agenda. Lets talk about what we heard from democratic senator chris coons. He is hearing from republican colleagues who are privately congratulating biden. Have you spoken to republican colleagues and what are you hearing from them . I havent really spent much time speaking to them. We have had a few votes but giving covid, we try to get on the floor and vote and get off as quickly as possible so i really havent taken their temperature. I have been deeply disappointed we only have a handful of republican colleagues who are actually publicly congratulated joe biden and members of President Trumps administration who are literally saying we are going to transition to a second Trump Administration. That is absurd. And that is so inappropriate and is creating instability and harm to the u. S. Youre right about covid, obviously, making things more difficult but should democrats be reaching out more to republicans and putting the pressure on them to at least acknowledge where things stand right now and not claim like what pompeo falsely said yesterday about transitioning to a Trump Administration . Why arent you and other democrats reaching out to republicans more on this . Well, i think we will. I think there has been a little bit of time that was given for whatever face saving they wanted to do, but now its become unhelpful and, frankly, harmful to the United States. We have known for sometime that as we looked at the data that gatherings inside private residences were a big driver of this pandemic. People sort of took their gatherings inside, you know, because of concerns about larger outdoor gatherings an we saw numbers spike. As the weather has gotten cooler more people are indoors and the concern. People will travel. They will get together indoors and its hard to ventilate and hard to wear a mask when youre eating and those are prescription for increase in numbers. As was mentioned a low versus medium to highist. Low risk is small by reason with only members of your household. Moderate risks small outdoor with family and friends. Highest risk what people do is a large indoor gatherings with lots of people outside the household. Look. Id love to do that. My parents would love to come here from florida to visit me and their grandkids but we are not doing it this year as we weight the particular concerns. We are trying to project what could happen but we already saw what happened in canada which celebrated thanksgiving recently. What can we learn from that . When you look at the guidance given in canada prior to thanksgiving, it mirrors a lot of the guidance people are getting here in this country. Thanksgiving, obviously, celebrated middle of october in canada. What we saw, this is reliable a few weeks after their thanksgiving, you saw spikes. As people, they are exposed and then takes a couple of weeks to get tested. That is when you start to see the numbers increase. Sure enough, they happened. I think people had the best of intentions thinking ill just be with my family, but as we have said so many times, the virus doesnt care. Its so contagious, especially indoors. Think of that virus like a puff of smoke. Indoors it can travel all over the house. People think they let their guard down and with their family. A level of trust there. The virus doesnt care. It knows no bounds. I want to get in news we are getting from moderna just announcing that they should know by the end of the month whether its covid19 vaccine works. What do you make of that announcement on top of the pfizer announcement we have already heard about . Yeah. Its very encouraging. We sort of knew this was going to be happening. The trials started around the same time and they are similar vaccines the way the vaccines work and this is an mrna vaccine also and not surprising we would start to hear about data but we dont know what the data is and moderna doesnt noknow what the data is. An independent board which will call someone from modern anka a saying its showing x percent of efficacy. Pfizer got that call. We will see. The enthusiasm and expectations are high and then, of course, all of the other questions. Can you distribute it . Can you manufacture it enough . What does it mean for the average person. How does that apply to the Pfizer Vaccine . What hurdles does the Pfizer Vaccine have to come to get to the layperson . You deal with the temperature and you need more than one. What kind of challenges are ahead for that . Its an incredible challenge. My colleague Elizabeth Cohen wrote this great piece about it, but so many steps involved. You have to keep it at a certain temperature. When you do decide to you have to sort of transport it at these temperatures which is hard enough. When you do decide to finally thaw and dilute it you have only a certain window at which time the vaccine has to be given and patients have to be in place and swings ha syringes have to be ready and do this twice for hundreds of millions of people and billions of people around the world. Possibly yearly, pamela. What im describing may take an entire sector of our society to do on a regular basis to have that regular Vaccination Program for adults all over the world. Hopefully, children ooecheventu but starting with adults it will be enormous. Before that point we have masks. Now we are told by the cdc masks can protect the wearer and people around the person wearing the mask. Which kinds of masks offer the best protection . Its interesting. First of all, the cdc did change their guidelines and i think people kind of knew this that if you wore a mask it was probably going to give you some level of protection. This is one that my daughter made me. Three layer cloth mask. Would she send me one, please . Yes. You know what . Send me your address and ill get you one. These are surgical masks. A lot of people recognize these. They are higher filtration and loops that go around the ears. When he with wear them in the operating room we tie it because it gives you a snugger fit. The thickness of the mask overall is important. Then this is a mask that a lot of people have been talking about, the n95 mask. Its got better filtration so its better but one of the things about this mask is that it fits really well but also has an electrostatic charge in here. Think of that like your blanket catching a bunch of socks in the dryer. The electrostatic draw grabs the virus and other path agains and protects you. This is sort of the Gold Standard but any of these masks are beneficial for the wearer and the person around the wearer. When it came out i thought we knew it also protects a person wearing it but i think this is just more studies were done to backup what we already knew. Before i let you go, i want to talk about the numbers we are seeing with the pandemic. We are seeing Record Number of cases and hospitalizations at a time when most americans are experiencing covid fatigue or feeling hopeful that a vaccine is right around the corner. Im just wondering as you look ahead, sanjay, we look at the numbers from a months ago and where we are now. What do the numbers right now tell us what we are going to experience a month from now given the trickle effect that happens . If you look at the hospitalizations, pamela and that is a number i think is a truest most consistent measure of what is happening with this pandemic. Also the most actionable. Hospitals are getting full. You know that. You see that it affects communities. We know the hospitalizations are at the highest now throughout this entire pandemic over 60,000 people in the hospital. Hospitals are becoming overloaded. But keep in mind, what is 60,000 hospitalizations represent . It represents something that happened four to five weeks ago. It happened exposures four to five weeks ago, okay . So if you look at the fact that the numbers are much back then it was sort of 45,000, 50,000 people becoming infected and now its double, triple that number. That means four to five weeks from now, the hospitalizations are going to to go up significantly more. So that is the lag time that you sort of talk about. This is a fast moving cruise liner going through the ocean right now with lots of inertia and speed. If you slammed on the brakes it would be cruising a while. I talked to a bunch of modelers over the weekend and nums withes will continue to go up and a peak early january, early february and hopefully come down quickly. Our action now may not change the peak but how quickly we come down off the back side of that curve so it really matters and we know how much masks can make a difference. Hopefully, that message has been heard over and over again because until the vaccine, even after the vaccine for a period of time, its our best bet. Tens of thousands of lives at least could be saved just by simply wearing a mask. Its not just for you. Its for others around you. Donald trump has a big lead. 73,276 votes ahead of joe biden. Tomorrow is the deadline in which North Carolina can receive votes that were cast and postmarked by election day but had until tomorrow to be received and still counted. Hopefully, we will get more of a vote count there and that may be projectable in Donald Trumps favor. In arizona it hasnt been called yet. Joe biden has a lead that is shrinking since last week. 49. 4 to 49 but the biden folks are pretty confident they are hanging on to arizona and that will be in their column. Finally, georgia where we know there is going to be a statewide recount now. 49. 5 to 49. 2 and joe biden lead up to 14,093 votes. I dont think ive seen a recount overturn a lead that big. On arizona, the amount of battle left is more than the margin, right . But bidens team still thinks he is going to pull it off . I think its roughly about 50,000 ballots left. Given where they are from, they think they are going to be able to hang on that lead in arizona but that is why its not projected yet. We will wait to see. We are not projecting it. Exactly. We will wait and see. The national plorp vote, just look at this right now. Joe biden 77 million votes to donald trump 72 million. He has more than 5 million vote lead nationally over the president. I know we dont pick our president s this way. We use the Electoral College but that is a pretty big deal. 50. 8 is the highest percentage a challenger to an incumbent president has gotten in the National Popular vote since fdr in 1932. That is remarkable and important you pointed that out. Thank you. Joining me now, is fernita. Thank you for coming on. The New York Times spoke to top Election Officials and almost every single state and saw very few, if any, cases of voting irregularities. Youve reviewed what the campaign has set forth in making the case about fraud in this election. What does it tell you . It actually doesnt tell us much. The campaign is not telling irregularities and particularly those that would change the outcome of this race. In pennsylvania and you see the same claims in prior litigations. This idea that illegal ballots were counted and poll workers committed various errors by changing the dates on ballots or counting trump votes for biden also the allegation that their challengers didnt get meaningful access to the process and their challengers challenged certain ballots but those ballots were nonetheless counted. Many of the same claims but not much evidence to back them up. There is really no evidence of widespread fraud and no evidence of dead people voting which was another claim made this week. Generally been good about dismissing this litigation when there is no evidence so i would say the system is still working. We were reading through the michigan lawsuit the Campaign Just filed. There are affidavits included from some of their poll observers and volunteers one poll watcher we interviewed said they believed that ballots that were for donald trump were put aside and that kind of thing. Would that hold up in the court of law . Is the fact that it was filed so many days after election day, is that a strike against the campaign . I do think that a court will take that into consideration. You have to think about the potential remedies. If that is true that doesnt necessarily mean that changes the margin between joe biden and donald trump. In wayne county, 412,000 democratic voters cast ballots and that is compared to 143,000 republicans. So imagine the number you have to shift in order for that to change the nature of this race, right . I think in michigan, joe biden is up by almost 150,000 votes. A court is likely to look at everything in its totality. Right . They will look at the allegations made by the campaign but i think the court will want to see more hard evidence something wrong is being done. On a remedy, unlikely that type of systemic wrongdoing that will give donald trump another 150,000 votes to make a difference in the outcome of this race. You dont think that any of these lawsuits could change the outcome but what about running out the clock to help trump when you look at the dates where they have to have lecters and do you see that part of the strategy . I dont really see this as a legal dispute. Its more of a political one, right some its undeniable that given their track record in court, the Trump Campaign knows that these cases are losers but it does feed into a certain narrative. If they can create doubt around the election and if they can call into question the outcome then perhaps republican state legislators will be on board with trying to appoint a slate of electors in the vote totals. In pennsylvania, for example, this was floated in the weeks before the election but there is this idea that if the state legislature which they have put forward, at least some of the state legislators have put forth this idea of auditing the Election Results themselves and determine from that what the slate should be. Presumably a slate in favor of donald trump, right . So i do think his plan is political gain where he is trying to change the narrative and undermine the lex results so they can step in and unlikely to happen. I want to emphasize that and not let anybody panic. That could cause a lot of, you know . Right. Congress still has to count the votes. Congress counts the vote and congress determines the validity of any slates. Even then, its still a hail mary pass. This last question to wrap this up. Look. It is true in every election there are voting irregularities, there are examples of alleged fraud. That is true. That is not you are not saying that that doesnt exist at all. But youre saying that there is no evidence of widespread fraud or systemic fraud that could actually tip the scales, right . Right. This is a risk going into this election cycle. I think they realize any error they make could be a cause of action in some litigation, right . That is always a possibility but the states were particularly high this time because we had north of 150 Million People participate in this election. So, of course, mistakes will be made. Mistakes are made in every election but every mistake does not turn into widespread fraud. Also just to be clear as we wrap up, the Trump Campaign had put out their army of 50,000 poll observers. You know . They sent out there are people and everyone was really on high alert for this election given all of the allegations made even before the election.
