The virus. We are not going to control the pandemic. We are going to control the fact that we get vaccines, therapeutics and other mission. Why not we get control of the pandemic . Because it is a contagious virus just lie ke the flu. Now President Trump is ignoring social distancing and gathering large crowds and no masks required even though new cases of coronavirus are surging and some of them are traceable to his rallies. He is planning to hold multiple rallies every day until election day as Cnns Kaitlan Collins reports. Reporter President Trump and joe biden are making their closing arguments to voters while coronavirus cases are the highest they have ever been in the u. S. We are still rounding the corner. Donald trump has given up reporter infections are surging across the country including in the battleground states where the candidates are spending the last days of the 2020 race. Hello, michigan hello, iowa. Reporter the u. S. Reported almost 90,000 new daily cases yesterday but the president pushed a different view of reality as he left washington today. We are doing very well with respect to making the turn on the pandemic. We are working very hard on that. Great therapieutictherapeutics. Reporter trump promised a vaccine by election day. His election day is arbitrary deadline. Sooner we can get it is the better. That is his gold. Reporter the president who set that arbitrary deadline that medical experts said wasnt realistic. So we are going to have a vaccine very soon and maybe before a special date. You know what dat im talked about. Reporter the Campaign Announced hell hold 14 rallies across seven states the next three days. What a crowd here. Wow. This is a big crowd. Reporter trump has continued to hold large events with little social distancing where the crowds are mostly maskless. His last stop in minnesota today. Though the exact location of his rally was influx after state officials insisted the event follow safety guidelines that include a cap on 250 attendees. 25,000 people want to be there and they say you can only have 250 people. So they thought id cancel. But im not cancelling. Reporter biden is also in the midwest today with a different approach to the pandemic that his aides hope will help voters see him as a safe alternative to trump. Trump has waved the white flag. He surrendered this virus. But the American People dont give up. Reporter in michigan, the president ridiculed biden for adhering to social distancing guidelines while he flouts them. Im watching these biden rallies. There is nobody of course, he says they want to do it that way on purpose. Reporter trump even mocked a fox news host for wearing a mask at his rally. I cant recognize you is that a mask . No way. Are you wearing a mask . Ive never seen her in a mask look at you she is being very politically correct. Whoa whoa reporter jake, that comes from the same president who has said he has no problem with people wearing a mask. While he was in michigan he also wrongly claimed that hospitals are overstating the numbers of coronavirus deaths in order to get more money. Of course, something that doctors have denied and said is not true. But his next stop is going to be in wisconsin, a state he won by less than a percentage point in 2016. It shows you how important it is to the president. He is there today and the first lady is there tomorrow. We know joe biden is there tonight. So the president said something about people at his rallies are Wearing Masks and he doesnt think its a bad thing. But when you look at his rallies, most of the people there are not Wearing Masks, they are not distancing. So is he just trying to rewrite history and rewrite the reality we see in front of our eyes . These are unsafe events according to health officials, period. Reporter yeah, we have seen Campaign Officials try to say people are wearing a mask. Often they will have the people behind the president in the frame of the camera wear one. Ive been to a lot of these raerls. Not a lot of people wearing a mask. When you talk to them, you say if the president said put on a mask while he is on stage would you put one on . A lot of people often say yes, jake. Thank you so much. Appreciate it. Cnns chief medical correspondent dr. Sanjay gupta is joining us now. I want to give you a chance to respond to donald trump jr. Who said that the death rate in this country was almost nothing. He was actually reacting to a clip of you and me talking, saying you were saying its knots safe for people to go to trump rallies and you wouldnt recommend they go. What do you make of this saying almost no one is dying of this virus . Yeah. I saw that clip, jake. He was, obviously, very mocking toward these very scientific evidencebased recommendations. I think exactly what you said. So many people have died and, you know, more than the wars in iraq and afghanistan and vietnam put together. I know some of these families. I know they have watched this show and because i email with them and talk with them. You know, its really just really vile, you know . I think and also disrespectful. We, for the last eight months, jake, have brought on epidemiologists and scientists and Infectious Disease doctors and talk as to them on the show and the whole goal is to educate people and have podcasts. This mocking and demonizing and malaligns of science i think is shocking to me it continues. I watched what don jr. Said, saying there is no deaths and its going away and reminded me what the president said at the beginning, no cases, its going away. How are we still having that conversation nine months into this at this point . It hurt my feelings a little bit, jake. What else am i supposed to say . I was upset but not for me but for all of the people out there who have been so directly affected by this to be so dismidi dismissive of their lives. They didnt need to. We showed what would happen if we applied the policies around the world to the United States if we did what south korea did. 799 people would have died and not 229,000 people. The list goes on and on. We have tried to show people what is happening and tried to offer a plan and we did that by reporting on it, talking to these scientists and for some that doesnt seem to click with him. We have talked about the things that the administration has done that are good, operation warp speed for a vaccine. Yeah. And improvements in therapeutics and increasing or speeding up the process by which they are okay to give the president his due. But the idea, just yesterday, the same day don jr. Said this, 971 americans died from the virus. Just yesterday. It is just it is so heart breaking to see this denial of reality. You know, i dont know what to say. Im with you, jake. You and i have talked i think about every day since the beginning of this, every weekday. I mean, there are things that are worth, you know, celebrating in terms of the progress of science and the vaccine and the therapeutics and, overall, the death rate in terms of proportion of deaths will continue to go down thankfully, hopefully. We are learning a lot about this virus. But the idea that you still want to bury your head in the sand as opposed to taking this on and doing something about it is incredibly frustrating. Its been sort of the most shaking thing i think for me because as a doc, you sort of belie believe, you know, people will galvanize and you could help save my life and i could help safe your life and the conversation we were talking about in march and that has to be the thing to inspire people do the right thing. Last day of october we are hearing from the president s son that deaths are not happening. How do you solve a problem if you dont acknowledge it at all . I lost a little bit of sleep just thinking not again about my own feelings but the idea we are the United States and the best we could do was be the worst in the world. It just doesnt sit right with me. The u. S. Just since ive been on air passed the sobering new milestone. 9 million cases, 9 million by far according to official numbers, the worst in the world in terms of how many people have been infected about this horrible virus. What do you think the count is going to look like the end november . Another pace people are becoming infected is increasing. People say we are going to hit maybe a hundred thousand people potentially becoming infected every day and could surpass that even. Youre talking about a month, 3 million more people, potentially. I hope not. I cant believe im saying that word so cavalier, 3 Million People could potentially become infected been a month but it is possible, jake. You look at the numbers today versus yesterday and not just the growth but the pace of growth and within another less than two weeks there will probably be another Million People infected if the numbers continue to grow at that acceleration, that pace. Its really problematic. There are younger people who making up a larger percentage of the newly infected. As you point out we have more therapeutics and we should be able to bring the overall death rate down as a proportion of infected. But once you have so many people infected, even if you bring the death rate down, the proportion down, its so many deaths, jake. If you look at the imhe model they say we probably could be close to 2,500 people potentially dying every day again. 100,000 infected and 2,500 is still that 2. 5 we are have been talking about. Even beyond the death rate. Some of the Young Healthy people that survive this have Lifelong Health affects scarring in their lungs and still trouble breathing months later. Now with the onset of the flu season, we have a case in california where somebody has tested positive for both coronavirus and the flu at the same time. What is most worrisome about that . Well, i think that we are going to see more and more of that because, you know, you have these two respiratory viruses that are really going to be increasing in numbers around the same time and it is possible as you point out that to be infected with both. The idea i think is less significant for any given individual because i think the overall magnitude of the disease will be dictated by the worst virus for that person but when you have this happening in large populations, the concern i think for Public Health officials is that both these things in certain segment of the population is going to require hospitalization and if you are demanding resources for two sort of viruses, respiratory viruses at the same time, that is when you really start to get in trouble in terms of resources. So we already have a good projection in any given year how many people need to be hospitalized for flu and now they are trying to layer in and try anticipate what its going to look like with coronavirus as well. Its so depressing. Dr. Sanjay gupta, thanks so much. Appreciate you, as always. The final focus trump and biden bombarding the upper midwest battleground states. Today joe biden is having a clear focus on the campaign trail rebuilding the democrats blue wall has been so crucial to their past election successes, though not four years ago. Biden campaigning in des moines, iowa before rallies in minnesota and wisconsin this evening. Arlette saens is live for us outside of st. Paul, minnesota. Why has the biden team decided to focus there today . Joe biden says he is not taking anything for granted and that includes here in minnesota. This is a democratic leaning state but one where President Trump has tried to make anno lay in in recent weeks. Part of bidens goal today into the threestate wing he is making is shore up democratic support in minnesota as well as wisconsin where he is traveling later today a few hours ago Biden Campaigned in iowa, a state that President Trump won decisiveliy back in 2017 but a competitive race there in this president ial election. Biden honing in on the coronavirus and also talking about the character of the nation being at stake. Take a listen. Nothing can tear america apart except america, itself. And that is exactly what donald trump is doing from the beginning, trying to divide america, pitting americans against one another, based on race, gender, ethnicity, national origin. Its wrong. Thats not who we are. Look, folks. Everybody knows who donald trump is. We got to let him know who we are. Reporter while in iowa, biden promoted the Democratic Senate candidate. Youve seen him do that in other states like georgia and michigan as he has argued that its not just important for democrats to win the white house but they also need to reclaim the senate. A competitive race there for incumbent republican senator joni ernst, her seat. Where is the Biden Campaign putting her resources on the final weekend and monday, the last day before the election day . Reporter bidens focus in the final stretch will be on rebuilding that blue wall. He is ending today in wisconsin. Tomorrow, he will be campaigning in michigan with his former boss and most powerful surrogate president obama and trying to drive up turnout there including with black voters. Then its all eyes on pennsylvania. Biden will be campaigning there on sunday. On monday, both candidates on the democratic ticket and their spouses will be spanning out across the state, pennsylvania critically important to their path to 270 electoral votes. I think you meant to say the como commonwealth of pennsylvania . Reporter yes. Im smiling ha ha thanks so much. Appreciate it. Gloria borger is here with me. Trump is hitting midwest and minnesota and wisconsin. What does that tell you . It tells me joe biden in particular, is trying to shore up those nest statmidwestern st they feel Hillary Clinton didnt pay enough attention to in 2016. Biden is ahead in minnesota but he wants to make sure he gets his voters out and exactly what he is trying to do. The Trump Campaign believe they have a great get out the vote effort and their candidate is the great motivator and that whatever we are seeing in the polls, we shouldnt pay any attention to because they are going to make up the differential on election day. And they believe that donald trump is the person who can do that which is why you see him out there barnstorming like crazy in places that he won last time, sort of effectively putting his finger in the dike, trying to make sure he can keep what he won with last time. Abby, the Biden Campaign said they want to make pennsylvania their critical focus. On monday, both biden and harris and their spouses will be campaigning in all four corners of the commonwealth. What do you make that have . Well, jake, the commonwealth of pennsylvania is im sorry its a very annoying habit of mine but go ahead. I apologize. Obviously, really central to the biden strategy. Frankly, honestly, offensively and defensively. The Biden Campaign knows that pennsylvania is that Tipping Point state that if everything goes pretty well for them on the map, pennsylvania can get them very quickly over 270. On the other hand, if donald trump is able to get a lot of the states that he won last time taking out the michigan wisconsin and minnesota, taking that completely out of the equation, pennsylvania is a key state for trump too. And it makes his path to 270 a whole lot easier as well. This is a critical state that also signals what might happen if those upper midwestern states and states with the comparable dna. Biden campaign have to show they are competitive there. Because what happens in pennsylvania is going to be a harbinger what is to come later on and that happened four years ago to Hillary Clinton. They know for biden, they cant let that happen this time around. The one problem with this is that pennsylvania, we already know, is going to take a while to count their votes, so even while it might be a Tipping Point, its a late Tipping Point. We wasnt really know where that state is for a little bit of time. Its no mistake that you hear joe biden talk about how he is from scranton and you hear the president talk about he went to wharton at the university of pennsylvania. Then the president says joe biden really isnt from scranton. He left you. He left you. So they are trying to use every connection they can to the state of pennsylvania and biden believes that he has a better connection as he believes he is a real populous and connecting with people there and trump is not. Trump was holding four rallies in pennsylvania tomorrow and five more on sunday and five more on monday. That is 17 rallies all over the country. Is not just pennsylvania. In four days he is hitting the sun belt and rust belt hard. I think one of the theories of the case from the Trump Campaign lets be very clear. Trump absolutely has a path to 270 electoral votes. He definitely could be reelected. Doesnt matter what the polls suggest. Those are odds and just a snapshot. What do you think his theory of the case is in terms of how he can win . Is it just going to these trump areas, abby, and getting the vote up as much as possible . They are a superior turnout organization they can turn out trump voters who are not being accounted for by the tip ways we measure who is showing up on election day. It is try four years ago the president was able to i would describe as dormant democratic voters and people who didnt have as much of a cultural tie to the Democratic Party and donald trump scooped them up. He flipped some obama voters and but new voters. You hear them talking a lot about people are on newly registered voters and they say those people are much likely to vote this time around and on top of that, that they have the ground game to find them and turn them out. He is going to have to do that incredibly charged way in all of the places that are close. So pennsylvania, North Carolina, georgia, florida, arizona. These are all places that are close that almost all of them he has to win in. They really need to have an explosive election day turnout and the Trump Campaign believes that that is exactly what they will have and what we have seen in early voting, the advantage for biden in many places will dissipate completely. Yeah. We will see what happens. Anything really could happen. Thank you both. Voters scrambling after a late decision in a crucial battleground state. Across the country, more than 85 million americans have already voted. That is more than 60 of all the ballots cast in 2016. There is also a new sense of urgency with new Court Rulings threatening the validity of some ballots that have been mailed in. Cnns pamela brown reports in making it count. Reporter with just four days to election day, the message to voters in many places is clear its too late to mail in your ballot. If you have an absentee ballot in your hand right now, drop it off in person. Reporter thursday night, a federal Appeals Court handed down another confusing ruling in minnesota, essentially moving up the deadline for mailin ballots from a week after election day 8 00 p. M. On november 3rd. All of the ballots that come in after election day will be set side and segregated and there could be future litigation that might cause those ballots not to be counted. Reporter that is problematic for anyone in minnesota who already mailed in their ballots believing they had another week to be delivered. Earlier this week, the u. S. Supreme court kept ballot deadline extensions in place in North Carolina and pennsylvania. By declining to make a decision, this close to the election. If they havent sent their ballot in yet, walk it to the Election Office or a drop box but do it in person. Reporter bleutler county, pennsylvania, received thousands of calls from voters who still hadnt received their requested ballot. Thousand of those ballots remain unaccounted for. Over 99 of the ballots have been sent out. There has been mail delays and there has been sort of spotty places where they have been issues. Reporter the Postal Service says it doesnt have a record of them being dropped off. Now officials are investigating. Despite the issues with mailin voting, the turnout ahead of election day has been massive. Texas officially surpassed its entire 2016 turnout already. Its the last day of early voting in seven states including georgia where more than 3. 56 Million People have voted, a 70 increase over 2016. As election day approaches, there is mounteding anxiety about voting intimidation. Philadelphias dach. A. Said the city received dozens of call for possible voter intimidation but none was very serious. Still the d. A. Had a stark warning for anyone trying to threaten voters. I got a jail cell and i got criminal charges and you can stand in front after philadelphia jury and you can explain why you thought it was okay to come to philly and steal our votes. Reporter today, jake, the Postal Service outlined of series of, quote, extraordinary measures that its taking to ensure ballots get to where they need to be on time to get counted and that includes adding extra election hours and adding special lines at the post office for people with ballots. Given how Many Americans are voting by mail and how many states dont start counting those ballots until election day we cannot emphasize this enough we likely will not know the winner of several key states on Election Night, meaning we probably will not know next tuesday who the next president is. Reporter yeah. No, that is absolutely right. There has been a Record Number of mailin ballots this year because of the pandemic. And Election Officials have said over and over again, we may not know the results, especially because in a couple of key battleground states, they are not even opening up the ballot for these mailin ballots until election day. That is pennsylvania and wisconsin. These are also two states that dont have a history of dealing with mailin ballots. Its not typically how they vote in their elections but this year they are because of the pandemic. And so because of that, because of all of these factors, experts are saying, hey, everyone should be patient on Election Night, that they are always unofficial any way. They are not certified for weeks and even if a candidate does declare victory too early, it has no legal bearing. Republican leaning cumberland county, pennsylvania, will not start counting the vote by mail until the next day, wednesday. Apparently seven counties in pennsylvania say they are waiting until the next day. Pamela brown, thank you. Joe biden and President Trump are holding three Campaign Rallies to sway every last possible voter their way. Harry enten joys me. Biden and trump focusing on the upper midwest. Why is this such a crucial area . Yeah. Just take a look at our map here and it gives you a good understanding. It forms a basis for joe bidens blue wall, specifically minnesota, wisconsin, and iowa is much more of a tossup. You can see this in the polling averages for what you see is that joe biden holds significant advantages in minnesota, michigan, and wisconsin. Iowa very, very close. And why is wisconsin, you know, a state that went for donald trump four years ago, why is joe biden ahead by nine points right now there . Because of white voters without a college degree. Right now trump is up by four points and still leading but remember last time around he won that group by 16 points in wisconsin so a real deterioration of his support there. Harry, we know that coronavirus is really surging in those states right now. Do voters see the pandemic as one of the top lex issues . They do. They see it as the pop issue. We have polls from wisconsin and we have them from michigan. Take a look. The coronavirus ranks as the most important issue facing the country in both of those states. The economy which trump is trying to pump up rates second ten points behind in each of those states. When will we know which candidate has carried which states in the upper midwest . Will it be on Election Night . Probably not at least in the states that matter, right . You were just talking with pam about this. This gives you a good understanding. The mailin votes will not be processed before election day in wisconsin and michigan and only some of the state. Minnesota and eye wdo begin but its really michigan and specifically wisconsin which are the most important states. Its more important for us to get the vote totals right than to be fast. Accuracy is number one in my mind. Pennsylvania is not on the map but they are not starting to count until election day and that is by law. Harry, a major wildcard here and what we ksaw in the 2016 result. This idea the polls might not necessarily be right but so important to point out even if the polls are off by the same margin this they were in 2016, take a look at here. Joe biden would still get 335 electoral votes and still win in michigan and still win in a place like wisconsin and minnesota. Donald trump just needs a bigger polling. Could that happen . Of course but he is facing a much more uphill battle than four years ago. Fighting uphill battle but as we all know, anything could happen. Anything could happen. Anything. Thats right. Harry, thank you. In the night we have been waiting for is almost here. Election night in america. Cnns live coverage starts at 4 00 p. M. Eastern. Not enough beds for baby. In our 2020 lead today, win or lose in four days, President Trump has dramatically changed the Republican Party over the last four years, including the way he tosses around and promotes false conspiracy theories and fueling them on his twitter account. Joining me now, is republican congressman from denver congressman riggleman. Four days before election day. How do you see the future of the Republican Party . I. Its scary. I knew you were talking about commonwealth and im not planning Bohemian Grove right now. We have a policy that is solid but seeing candidates are pushing outlandish theories. Not only that, but fed rated. Its a conspiracy theories nonsensical but have antisemitic base and its dehumanizing other people and worries me. What does a gop become . We were the party of Abraham Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt and Ronald Reagan and that is a republican i wanted to be. Right now im looking at theories that are very concerning and its hard for me to grasp that. You lost the Party Convention to be nominated. One of the reasons that you did, your time in office is ending in january. One of the reasons you lost is you presided over samesex marriage, not just same sex but interracial samesex marriage. Yes, sir. Is that why you think you lost because you did something perfectly legal . Yes. That what was surprising to me. A party that supposed to embrace individual liberty, i had two friends who worked for me on the campaign very dear people and i thought it was the right thing to do and i would have been a coward if i didnt officiate that wedding. I refused to kiss the ring of certain individuals and refused to apologize. What is funny i was called a tool of the antichrist and my wife was called the spawn of satan. I guess that makes us a new power couple in virginia. Ive never had these type of attacks and i think that is part of the problem we are seeing a small portion of the gop i think that might not be dealing in reality or where we are at right now as a country. Youve written a book that is coming out, very entertaining an very fun. Tackle some of these extremist groups and conspiracy theories. Its called big foot its complicated how dangerous of a threat are these groups do you think, congressman, and the legitimacy they now have. I think when it goes from simple fun or mythology to weapon asking that myth or sanity. Big foot are fedrated and some are crazy and unprovable. This is supposed to be a fun book i wrote. I will shock some people. This is the book they were talking on saturday night live that was supposed to be big foot erotic and this is more amusing and can terrifying and should make you laugh and cry a little bit. I wrote this book sort of starting in fun. By the end of the book you see its funny, rooity . Its me. Its selfdeprecating but should let people know that Belief Systems can get out of control and those are sometimes unprovable but people live by them. That is okay but once you weaponize that myth or insanity and becomes a policy platform we sort of lost our way and i dont want the gop to lose their way. But right now, im seeing things that are re very concerning and this book is light hearted at the beginning but i think scare people by the end. The republican candidate in georgia who has embraced this insane qanon theory she got the nomination for the Republican Party and now embraced by House Republican leadership and, in fact, the two of the Republican Senate candidates in georgia competed for her vote. Do you still think that youre a republican or has your party just run so far off in the direction of conspiracy theories that they have left you behind . You know, i always thought of myself as a constitutional republican. The thing i like about this program and the way you present things is how do we just deal in facts . I believe, based on the platform, i still am but i dont think i left the party. I think the party is leaving me. You know, my background in intelligence, the background that i have in the military and im a factbased guy, is why i wrote this book but its also why i ran for office and if i never run for office again, at least i can say i just try to speak in facts and i dont want to make everybody angry but i have this unique ability to anger both sides but you see some of those methods used by right being used on the left and im working with Analysis Companies and now we are seeing mimicking happening on the right and left. This stuff can metastasize not only nationally but international as you see in germany and italy. Congressman denver riggleman, good to see you. Reporter President Trump has tried to end daca but halted by the Supreme Court for now. Then the future of the border wall under my leadership we secured the most secure border in u. S. Reporter the administration has also moved to seize private property with more than 70 lawsuits pending to acquire more land for the wall and trump still hasnt made mexico pay for the wall, despite his promises. Reporter President Trump has relied heavily on executive orders to implement those big changes in Immigration Law here in this country.
