Is in tampa. President trump won florida in 2016, his new home state and it is critical to his path to victory in 2020. Reporter no doubt about that. Youd be hard pressed to find a path to victory is that doesnt include the 29 electoral votes here in florida. The race here is extraordinarily tight and in the past when the race has been tight, it has tended to lean republican and they are hoping that it does as to again in 2020. As a result, the president is spending a lot of time me, spending a lot of money and a lot of energy in getting the vote out here in florida. And he is doing it in part by continuing to hold these makes suff massive rallies despite the fact that the coronavirus continues to be a bigger and bigger problem here in the sunshine state. 4,000 indicaticases announced f third day in a row, 79 people died because of the coronavirus yet the president continues to hold these rallies with folks packed in shoulder to shoulder and hardly any masks. Yet his message to the crowd is that were rounding the corn beer abe corner and not something that you have to worry about. And he looked out at this crowd where everyone is packed in, almost no one wearing masks, and he actually said if you get a little close to someone, put on a mask. Obviously there are thousands here who are not doing that. Still the president believes florida is a state they can win and that is why they are focusing so much energy here in the closing days of this campaign. Ryan, thank you. Moments ago joe biden wrapped up a drive din rally in Coconut Creek continuing his message of controlling the pandemic. And telling the crowd if he can turn florida blue next week, he will win the election. Jessica dean is live for us in Coconut Creek. Obviously this is a radically different type of Campaign Rally that we just saw from President Trump, but a very consistent closing message. Reporter right. We have heard this message again and again, biden being very disciplined with his closing message. And to your point, you look at these two events side by side, the cars now coming out, but they were all in their car, socially distanced. The Biden Campaign going to Great Lengths to make sure that everybody is following the safety guidelines. And the response to the coronavirus pandemic playing into this closing argument, abo and the economy. This event really targeting early voters where the Trump Campaign will rely on people showing up and voting on election day. The Biden Campaign really wants their voters going early and getting it done and they encouraged them to immediately go and vote. We are in brin broward county, democratic stronghold here, they really want to run until score to try to give them an edge in what as ryan said is a very tight race here. And as part of a targeted new ad airing in states like florida where there is a large latino population, biden is addressing how he would try to work on reuniting the 545 children forcibly separated from their impeaches at the border who have not yet been returned to their parents. Right. He has called that criminal. It is something that advisers say has really affected the Vice President and we saw today when he rolled out some new ads in Battle Ground states this promise that if elected, he will form a task force whose soleal responsibility wou responsibility would be to reunite these children with their families who the government has said they cant find their families. So the Biden Campaign zeroing in on the hispanic vote as well as releasing new ads in a number of Battle Ground states. They also hosted a call today explain more of their strategy, doing a lot of targeted things by holding by link quauilinguals and making sure their yououtrea is effective. Biden has been running behind Hillary Clinton in florida among hispanics according to poles. Jessica dean, thank you. Both campaigns clearly still see florida as a place they can win. Since 1928, only two candidates for president have won the white house without winning florida. Harry enten is joining me now. What is the state of the race in florida right now . Yeah, if you pull up our race to 270 map, you will see florida is in a nice yellow, that indicates that it is a very, very close race. Unlike perhaps some of the midwestern battlegrounds. And if you take a look at the polling average, you see joe biden with perhaps the latest of edges. He is at 49 to trumps 46 . But that is a race that at this point is too close to call. And the biden cam mapaign sa they are aggressively courting latino voters. But the question is whether or not the puerto rico stroetd votn Central Florida who favor biden can make up the strength with others in southern florida. What do you think will happen . Yeah, if you look at the polling average among hispanic voters and you compare to four years ago, biden is still up with them but his lead is only 12 points versus Hillary Clinton the final preelection polls then was 21 points. And it is that cuban vote in the southeast part of the state that donald trump is doing significantly better in than he was four years ago. Will it ultimately be enough for trump . Im not quite sure. One other little nugget there is of course among senior citizens, you are seeing biden coming better than Hillary Clinton did. So perhaps that could help compensate with his performance with hispanics. Florida has already start the counting their early and absentee votes. Are we likely to know who won florida on Election Night . Yeah, much better chance than say the midwest because they are already starting to process those ballots. And unlike those midwestern battleground states, what you will see in the state of florida is joe biden will actually probably jump out to an early lead because we know from the polling data that joe biden is winning amongst those who have already cast a ballot. While those who have yet to vote, that is where trumps vote really is. He will try to run up the score on election day. That is interesting, some of a blue Miles Per Hour wranrage expect to see. Walk us through howe each could win the white house if they dont win florida. Yeah, it is significantly easier for joe biden. You can see it in a man in which you say, okay, well give trump the state of florida, well even give him North Carolina and arizona. All joe biden has to do is win in pennsylvania where he holds a polling lead, win in wisconsin and then win the Hillary Clinton states. That gets him to 278. For donald trump, the math is much more difficult. Yes, it is possible if he loses in the state of gla, of florida wins the rest of the six closest swing state that he is won this 2016, he would be able to basically do it. But here is the key. If you just look at the numbers and you run them over and over again, even if joe biden loses in the state of florida, he still has about a 65 chance of winning. If donald trump loses florida, i estimate his chance of winning is less than 5 . Interesting. Thank you so much. Agreeing concern in two Battle Grounds states about koundi counting mailin ballots. Many are seeing record hospitalizations. 994 deaths were reported in the United States yesterday due to covid, a situation we have not seen in months since the pandemic began, four of the top fire wor five worst days yet for new cases have been this week. And now experts say we could hit 100,000 cases a day in the coming weeks or maybe even the coming days. That will put us on pace to hit 9 million total cases by saturday. I want to bring in director of the Vaccine Education Center at the Childrens Hospital of fi l philadelphia. Doctor, thanks for joining us. Dr. Gottlieb says were at the hardest point in the pandemic right now. Take a listen. This is really sort of last stage of the acute phase of this, 2021 will start to look a lot better. I think that well be celebrating together this 2021 thanksgiving. We need to get through the next couple months. This is the hardest point, the next two months. Do you agree this is the hardest point, the next two months . Yes, i think a lot of things are converging. One, were still not great at wearing masks. Two, were entering the winter months when a virus like this which is spread by small droplets typically rages in the winter. It was surprising that it continued in the summer. And it will be concomitant with the typical influenza. As a doctor, are you surprised that all of this is happening and there is no leader, the president , the Vice President , nobody in the white house saying okay, obviously things are not working and we need to do x, y, z . Does that surprise you . It has continued to surprise me. If you look at especially south korea which is a model for how to get control of this particular pandemic, but everyone our neighbor to the north canada has done a much better job because they have stronger federal and local leadership. Also the governors could have been much better at doing the most powerful thing we have, which is hygienic measures. Masking, social distancing, that is the most powerful tool we have and yet we choose to set aside and certainly no leadership at the federal level that mimics good behavior. The White House Task force said in one of its weekly state reports, quote, we continue to see unrelenting Broad Community spread in the midwest, upper midwest and the west. This will require aggressive mid gags to contr mitigation. South dakota has a 46 positivity rate. North dakota with the most new cases per population this week. How did things get so bad in those regions . In defense of the administration at some level, also things are raging in germany and in france. This is hard. What makes it hard is that it is so much asymptomatic spread. Most of the people that you come in contact with who you will catch the virus from have no sympto symptoms. So therefore, what you should do is assume that everybody you come in contact with is asymptomatically infected with the virus so you wear a mask and social distance. It has been hard in this country to get people to do that. Maybe because we were found ed n the basis of individual rights so maybe they feel like that gives them the freedom to catch a potentially fatal disease. Dr. Fauci thinking about a national masking strategy, i think it is a great idea. Dr. Fauci says that moderna and pfizer are neck and neck in the race for a vaccine. You are a member of the Advisory Committee on vaccine approval. What do you think . Hard to know. Still reading the tea leaves. The only people that really know the answer to that question are a group of people called the data safety monitoring board, they are the ones looking real time at who has gotten the vaccine, who hasnt, even the companies dont really know because the data safety monitoring board is really a firewall between the company and the trial. As soon as the data safety monitoring board says i think we met an efficacy standard, then they call the company and the Company Submits for approval through the socalled emergency authorization. And then well hear about it. Right now it is hard to know. Weve learned dr. Scott atlas pushed to slow testing down when he joined the task force this summer. He is not an expert on infectious diseases, but he has this view of the virus that the president likes, he shared the view with Florida Republican governor ron desantis. And around that time, there was a dramatic drop in testing in florida. President trump has been pushing for less testing well before this. How concerning is this to you . Youve seen companies sorry, youve seen countries using testing to get their way out of this and that is essentially what south korea did. It is hard to test your way out of this pandemic. Unless you are a country like south korea which has very strong federal leadership and a populist that is willing to do what the federal authorities are asking them to do. We dont have that country in both ways, a lack in federal leadership and a populist that sees them as having freedoms that they shouldnt see themselves as having. I think the problem with the freedom rights is the individual. That is what is wrong at some level, a group of bikers go maskless and they are proud of the fact that they have flaunt aed their independence and then maybe became a super spreader event. Doctor, thanks so much for joining. Why counting mailin ballots in one Battle Ground state just got more complicated. Stay with us. Last nights sleep, interrupted by pain . Reelect scott wiener for state senate. In our 2020 lead, five days away from election day and already more than onethird of all registered voters in the United States have cast their ballots. More than 79 million so far. But less than one week out, there are new legal fights over mailin ballots in critical battleground states and they are laying the groundwork for responsible Court Battles in the days after the election as pamela brown reports. Reporter with five days to go until election day, more than a third of americas registered voters have already cast their ballots. More sense of security when we vote in person. Reporter 28 states have received more than 50 percent of total ballots cast. And in florida where more than 7 Million People have voted, the democrats big early turnout lead has narrowed to just over 200,000. The texas turnout is already massive with more than 8 million votes cast so far. Early voting there is on track to eclipse its entire 2016 vote total. We want to make it as easy as it can be to make it accessible. So this location is open 24 hours. Reporter there are also new legal battles over whether late arriving maim lin votes will b counted. North carolina can count ballots up to nine days after the election if they are clearly postmarked by november 3. And pennsylvania, the decision is trickier. Allowing ballots received by november 6 to be counted for now, but the court may clear they could be disputed later. Pennsylvania officials announcing that they will securely segregate votes by setting aside ballots that arrive after election day. Setting up a potential nightmare legal battle if late arrival ballots end up being enough to swing the leaelection. I know there is confusion about court decisions. Make a plan today to vote. Right now do not wait. Reporter and each county has a different counting plan. Cumberland county wont begin counting until wednesday. Prioritizing inperson voting. Another wants to to have it done by tuesday night, but mailin ballots could lag. We believe that Election Night well have all the inperson voting done and approximately if everything goes well 50,000 mailin ballots completed. Reporter New Hampshire is already getting started. As Election Officials there begin partially processing absentee ballots today. And in minnesota, a bipartisan message from former governors urging patience warning the count may not be complete on Election Night. A delay just means our system is working. And that were counting every single ballot. But no matter who wins, lets demonstrate the civility and decency that minnesotians are known for. And jake, early inperson voting is wrapping up in several state, but in arizona, it has been extended through monday. Officials say that is because of the pandemic. But of course as we know, every state has different rules and deadlines. So for more for on what vetters ne voters need to know, go to cnn. Com vote. And lets talk about it with my panel. Mia love and paul badota, and also general counsel has said what we have seen is a concerted National Republican effort across the country in every one of the states that had a legal battle to make it harder for citizens to vote. Ive never worked for a republican candidate who thought that it was a good idea to make it hard for people to vote. And trevor potter, a republican saying this about the republican effort to make it more difficult, does it concern you . Well, it certainly concerns me. I came from a race where there were lines that were about four to five hours long. So, you know, you have to make it as easy as possible especially during the time of a pandemic and an outbreak he that were seeing right now. People shouldnt be afraid of having people get out to vote. The president really shouldnt be afraid if he believes that he is worthy of another four years. Get as many people to vote as responsible. My guess is that those who aare concerned about the voting process will hand in their ballots personally, but you dont want those lines longer. You want to give as many people as many options to vote as possible. And paul, we have seen the Trump Campaign and allies and republican parties trying to make it more difficult to vote, whether it is Harris County i think in texas in your home state, where there is i think governor an about the hbbott sa oon only one drop box . Why . Harris county has more people than 24 states and just one drop box in. And why, what is the point here. Well, i think if you step back, there is a holistic approach here to Voter Suppression that mr. Trump has brought to the republican party. It is not mia loves or trevor potters republican party. This is new. It began even before the last election when mr. Trump discredited the democracy and said the election was rigged. And then there was the voter fraud fraud. And then there was a purge of voter rolls particularly in southern states. And then mr. Trump discredits mailin voting. And they gum it up at the Postal Service and eliminate drop boxes. And then you reduce polling places on election day. And then if someone gets to the line, there is voter intimidation. People are calling to videotape people while they vote in philly, but not in farfargo. I wonder why. And if all else fails, go to court and try to get kavanaugh and others try to rig it for you in court. This is a holistic approach mr. Trump has. And in texas more than 8. 4 Million People have cast a ballot already. That is almost all of the total vote in texas in 2016. This is a lot of enthusiasm. It is not necessarily democratic enthusiasm, but what do you think . Thats right. It is some of both, but it seems to favor if you look at the patterns of where people are voting, democrats more. Dave wasserman tell us that 12 counties in texas have already exceeded their entire 2016 tu turno turnout. 9 of those twoefl a12 are stusu those favor democrats. Three i think are clearly republican. So some of the republicans are coming out too. That is a good thing. I want everybody to vote. But right now, it looks like this surge, this continuout, is advantaging the democrats. I think that we might see texas go blue. You really think that . I mean, i have to he will did y you tell you, ive been hearing that for a long time and im 51 years old. My entire life. There was a point where ann richards because the governor, but since then, it has been pretty republican. Since 1994, last time democrats won, there have been 180 statewide elections and republicans won all 180. So, yeah, there is a trend. But everything continues until it stops. I think the motivation of people of color and latinos, i think the changing attitudes of white suburb suburbanites. There is a piece that im publicly lobbying. President obama needs to go to the rio grand valley. The turnout there wont be as high because there arent contested congressional and state regulated races. It is vote rich for the democrats. They need to send president obama to the rio grand valley. And we lost mia, one of the regrettable parts of doing a television during a pandemic, we rely on technology that isnt necessarily as good because we didnt didnt do inperson panels anymore. Thank you both. Dr. Birx vowed never to sit in another meeting ever again, that is next. Good morning, mr. Sun. Good morning, blair. [ chuckles ] whoo. Im gonna grow big and strong. Yes, you are. Were just learning about a vow from the doctor who was once one of the most high profile members of president Trumps Coronavirus Task force, a source telling cnn that dr. Birx vowed to never again sit in a meeting with dr. Scott atlas and never again to listen to his misleading information. Atlas of course is a neuro radiologist with no expertise in epidemiology, but increasingly has the president s ear when it comes to the coronavirus. Lets bring in kate bennett. Your reporting is that dr. Birx has logged more than 20,000 miles many since that fateful august meeting, but shes saying she will never sit with dr. Atlas again . Well, this seems to be her feeling that being in the room with dr. Atlas and listening to his theories which are so opposed to that of hers and other medical doctors and scientists just isnt something that she feels like doing and hasnt for quite some time. She has not been at the president s side in a Briefing Since the summer. And since atlas took over. And i hat to use the term doctor shopping, but it almost feels like this is what President Trump did until he found someone in the medical field who agreed with him about things like efficacy of masks, children being immune and not having the virus. So these are all things just opposed to the feelings of dr. Birx and so she has since hit the road. She can be in as many as three or four states in one week. She is on the ground doing work talking to state and local officials trying to spread the word about protecting different parts of america as they now are experiencing surges in the virus that they hadnt seen before. So she is not only up against the virus, she is now up against the administration and the Coronavirus Task force where she used to be a part is now on the of her realm. And lets remember dr. Atlas comments about mask wearing were so wrong that twitter blocked it. He has to take complete i think it was labeled a misleading tweet. You dont go to a podiatrist if you have a tooth ache. What might this mean for the future of dr. Birx in terms of her relationship with Trump Administration . We spoke to several sources who speak for dr. Birx regularly and they say she has a sticktoitiveness of a public servan servants. Shes been with the bush administration, Obama Administration and the Trump Administration. Clearly she will hang on, but she has indicated if she doesnt know this schedule is something that they can keep up with. It is grueling. She doesnt know if it is just yelling into the wind. And i think like a lot of us, she is waiting until after election day to see whether the Trump Administration continues or whether there is a Biden Administration and has she perhaps been too aligned with the Trump Administration. So there is a big question mark. But her real purpose right now is to get to those states, those counties, those rural communities, tribal reservations, she was in wyoming this week, trying to say the opposite of what the president is saying in his rallies, trying to convince people to social distance, to wear a mask, to keep hygiene, that winter is coming and it wont be pretty. Explain the impact this pandemic has had on the live music industry. Like a lot of industries that rely on people gathering, i mean, i feel very lucky because ive been successful and sort of can cross an incomeless period of time and survive it. But most of the musicians i know and all the crews and all the local crews and club owners and theaters, hundreds of thousands of people, bartenders, stage crew, traveling crew, all these people are out of work. And it really is terrible. People are trying to think of how they will hang on. And then what happens when things open up and when are they going to open up. It is a precarious place for an entire industry. And also obviously the Fan Experience and that how it will affect that engagement. It is the thing i love. Im grateful, but really sorry that so many people have been badly affected by this. Yeah, and i wonder what it is like for you when you see trump and pence completely ignoring Health Regulations and rules and liability and holding these massive events where there is no masks, no distancing. Events that you dont hold because you dont want your supporters to get infected and even if you wanted to, you wouldnt be allowed to. Yeah, it is disappointing because the sort of disregard for science and disregard for the health of people, disregard for even his own i suppose his greatest followers that are willing to go into the environment. But it doesnt tell everybody dont worry, believe what you will about it. But i also feel like the whole industry of people that are being denied work be and it is almost like, you know, it is a disregard for what is happening. Just playing by your own rules, taking to a really absurd and obviously selfish degree. Yeah, just makes me think that he is not really doesnt have much interest in the truth or in helping out with the struggle people have and being blatant about it. And youve come out in support of joe biden. You are part of the get out the stroet in additi Vote Initiative trying to make sure everyone takes advantage of their right to vote regardless of who they support. What makes this election in particular so important for you . Well, the world has been sort of moving toward this or in a scary direction of where weve lack of reality, questioning science, and questioning truth and, you know, alternative facts and its pretty scary. And i think age of reason is being, you know, challenged by an age of ignorance. As if theyre equal partners, and i think you know, joe biden doesnt represent all my beliefs by a long stretch, but the direction that he would his leadership would take the country would be at least toward trying to, again, turn the country into a place that listens to the science and listens to the medical industry and listens to the people that know, you know that have an idea of whats happening. You let the experts be the expert experts in their relative industries. Its unfortunate were in a place right now where, believe what you will, which is scary. I feel like the country needs to at least right itself and start looking in a consistent direction and move according to the advice of people that have an understanding of whats going on. For more than 15 years, youve worked with a group called head count, which promotes voter registration. Onethird of all registered voters, record 79 Million People have already cast their vote. Do you think, based on your conversations with people, do you think this election holds a different weight for voters that youve spoken to than previous elections . I think, you know i always get disappointed when i hear about how many people in america turn out to vote. I lived in south africa for much of my life. I was born there. When mandela was elected president , the first open and free election in that country, like over 90 close to over 95 of the population turned tout vote. In many cases these are people who had to walk miles and miles and miles to get to polling stations and wait in enormous lines. And so it was a testament to the commitment to the country and also the belief in the power of the vote. What i am very excited that more than half a number like its 79 million now, more than half of the total votes in the last president ial election, which is pretty exciting. It makes me think thats working. I feel like i feel as if we forget if we dont use that one part of our voice, you know, by casting our vote, we leave potentially the future of the country in the hands of people that we might disagree with profoundly. So, let them the majority of the people believe that we should be moving in a certain direction and they dont cast their votes, then a minority or even sometimes a fringe group of people will decide the future of the country. And i think thats desperately said and very dangerous. Whats your message to americans who might be watching right now who might not be in love with either candidate and think im just not going to vote . I dont like either one of them . Im not wildly in love with either of the candidates. Although i have met both of them and i have to say biden is much more charming man. In some ways. Trump is very charming, too, but in a very different way. He told me he thinks i was going places. Fact check true. And that was true but, you know, it wasnt that long ago. I thought it was very nice of him. But i always felt biden was very serious about his role in this country and always open to learning and always admitting to maybe where he was wrong. I think he is a very compassionate person. I dont agree with him everywhere. What i do think about is the direction the country is going in. And i think the reason you want to vote is because you want to be part of whats steering our future and, you know, if every if young voters went out, they would decide. Maybe the first step is biden toward a future thats more, you know, open sben capacitying the needs of everybody, you know, rather than, you know i believe he speaks to inclusion. And i think young people are about that. And so if young people went out and voted, they could change the direction of the country. And then move it again and move it again. Thats what its all about, you know. And so cast your vote so you can be part of readying or directing the ship. I think its the most important part of a democracy, i think. Dave matthews, thank you so much. Your music has helped get me through this pandemic. So, thanks on behalf of a lot of people, im sure, for that as well. Well, thank you very much sofor saying that. And i always enjoyed seeing you as well and thank you for your information. Thanks, dave. Dueling rallies with decision day, days away. What it will take to win. What the race looks like right now.
