Days, god wlg from the time im elected to sworn in to be able to make such a recommendation. Do you have any reaction to President Trump planning an outdoor event at the white house today to celebrate the nomination of Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court . Look. You know, if you have children and you are raised, all parents are taught that the example you set impacts on how your kids react. When youre the boss of an operation, the example you set, what you do matters to the rest of the company. Well, the words of a president and actions of a president matter a great deal. When the president of the United States puts on these superspreader events. You saw what happened when she was announced. All of the people including his family, thank god they seem to be okay. All of the people came down with covid. I just hope he is willing to have learned a lesson and there will be significant social distancing. I dont mean him for celebrating. A lot of things we could be doing having massive crowds. But the fact is that its just not appropriate now. So i just i just hope he and the Vice President and others act with some dispatch and do it that Everybody Knows people should be tested first before they even show up. Number one. Number two, they should be Wearing Masks. Number three, they should be socially distanced. Number four, it shouldnt be a huge crowd whether its outside or not. Thank you all very, very much. Form erm vice presideer vice biden taking questions in chester, pennsylvania, outside of philadelphia and an important area for any politician trying to win the commonwealth of pennsylvania. The Vice President and former Vice President really focusing on his Closing Argument which is that President Trump has mishandled the pandemic and continues to do so. Lets go right to cnns jessica dean. This was clearly an unexpected stop from the former Vice President . Reporter yep. Yes. We were not expecting this stop. This was a last minute in the afternoon. He is talking to voters in Delaware County, pennsylvania, one of the collar counties around philadelphia and its going to be really, really important in the battleground state of pennsylvania. They always look what is happening in the suburban counties seeing biden doing well with suburban voters and especially women and not a surprise he is going there. We heard him again going back to the covid pandemic. This has been central to their campaign. It is a giant part of their Closing Argument. That is that President Trump and his administration have not acted in the best interest of the American People. You heard him going after the Trump Administration, President Trump and Vice President pence about how they are campaigning. We have noticed and drawn attention to just in the last hour that biden is not officially on the campaign trail today with a rally or a planned stop. His campaign saying they are doing this because they have to campaign safely and effectively during a pandemic and he talked a little bit about that, jake. But, again, going back to covid, go back how he would handle it as a sharp contrast how the Trump Administration has handled it thus far. A real indication of how much both biden and trump are competing for pennsylvania. Biden there today doing two events and one in Chester County and one in Delaware County and President Trump doing three events in pennsylvania as well. Jessica dean, thank you. One week and one day to election day and pandemic is reaching new cases of spreading to new cases president of the United States is pushing the falsehood that the u. S. Is rounding the corner on the pandemic. The United States is not rounding the kocorner on the pandemic. Hospitalizations and deaths and cases are up. U. S. Recorded a 500,000 new cases and the most ever in a single week. At least 5 of the 8. 6 million cases in the u. S. Are from the Vice President s inner circle. Yet, Vice President is not quarantining even though he came in close contact with one of those individuals and defying cdc guidance claiming he is an essential worker. Pence is head of the Coronavirus Task force and he finished a rally and masks not required and no social distancing. People grouped in tight bunches. When we know that these rallies trump rallies have been linked to the spread of coronavirus. In minutes, President Trump is holding his own third rally. Another potential superspreader event. Just today by all appearances, the president has given up trying to control the spread of coronavirus in the United States and now his chief of sta mar meadows acknowledged that to me on tv yesterday. Saying their goal is not to contain the virus from spreading throughout the nation. We are not going to control the pandemic but control we get vaccines and other mitigations. Why not control the pandemic . Its a contagious virus just like the flu. We are not controlling the pandemic said the white house chief of staff. A stunning admission from the Trump Administration as we enter this new worsening phase of the pandemic. As cnns Kaitlan Klein ncollins reports. Absolutely the opposite. We have done an incredible job. Reporter trump praising efforts as he attempted to clean up this admission from his chief of staff. We are not going to control the pandemic. We are going to control the fact that we get vaccines therapeutics and other mitigation. Why not we get control of the pandemic . Because it is a contagious virus just like the flu. Reporter joe biden called that moment a candid acknowledgment of what President Trumps strategy has clearly been from the beginning, to wave the white flag of defeat. Trump fired back at biden today. No, no. He has waved the white flag on life. He doesnt leave his basement. This guy doesnt leave his basement. Reporter with only eight days until the election, biden making a surprise stop in pennsylvania as trump holds three rallies there today where he claimed Media Coverage of the Global Pandemic is intended to hurt him. All they want to talk about is covid. On november 4th you wont hear so much about it. Covid covid covid. Reporter the president doesnt mention the new rising cases and infections in the white house after five people and Vice President mike pences orbit tested positive. Despite the head of the Coronavirus Task force, pence is refusing to quarantine and citing federal rules on essential workers. The Vice President has great knowledge about the disease and pandemic and knows the right pr protocols to follow. Senators will vote on barretts nomination tonight answer pence indicated this weekend he would preside over the vote. Im going to be in the chair because i wouldnt miss that vote for the world. Reporter but it turns out hell miss the vote. Pence aide telling cnn today hell no longer attend unless a tiebreaking vote is needed which isnt likely. Now when the president was asked earlier today about this event he said its not going to be a large event but we are hearing its expected to be held on the south lawn, a large venue tonight. The chief of staff said earlier there will be social distancing but not mentioned if its required to get tested before that event or wear a mask while there. Justice Clarence Thomas is expected to administer the oath to barrett once the vote happens tonight around 7 30 is what we are expecting so far in the senate. I want to bring in chief medical correspondent dr. Sanjay gupta. Before we get to some of the policy ideas here, i want to take a second and reflect on President Trump saying falsely we are going to cover once in a century pandemic that has killed more than 225,000 americans and infected more than 8. 7 million including people we know. The idea that he is mocking it, covid, covid, covid. I mean, i and you know people who have lost loved ones to this virus. Its just shocking to hear the president of the United States talk about this deadly pandemic so glibly. Absolutely. Jake, it was what i was thinking immediately when i heard those comments. The cognitive dissidence him here in terms of forgot about waving the white flag. I think its worse than that. I heard your interview over the weekend. This has been a pursuit of herd immunity and basically not only just wave the white flag but let this infection, you know, run through the nation and we have talked many times about how destructive that would be in terms of the number of people who would die, the number of hospitals become overwhelmed which is already happening and, jake, you know, this idea that we dont know how long the immunity lasts so people get infected. We have these terrible things that happened. Then it is sort of treadmilling, youre running in place so long and not achieving anything. It was discouraging to hear this many months into the pandemic i think for you and me, jake. We have talked about this so many times. Its incredibly frustrating. Yeah. By the way, in terms of herd immunity, we know of individuals who got the virus, then got better, then got it again and some of them have even died. It might be very, very rare but we dont know anything about immunity at this point. There is evidence to the contrary. Yeah. Its a terrible strategy all around. The herd immunity was never supposed to play out this way. Ask any Public Health person. The idea to prevent these illnesses in the first place was always the strategy. The best strategy. This idea that youre going to have this faux immunity and we dont know how long it lasts and people get reinfected, it boggles my mind. I watched your interview on thing. The same thing that scott atlas is saying but they are doing for the herd immunity to take hold. Terrible idea and should be clear about that. White house chief of star mark meadows said you could control the virus. You cant control the pandemic. Joe bidens response so this is the white house is waving a white flag. What do you think . Is that a fair description by biden of the position of the white house . You know, i think its worse than that. I mean, to say that we surrender is one thing but the idea to say, hey, look, we are not only going to surrender but lay down and basically let this virus take over, take a hold of the country. Jake, five people infected in the most arguably the most secure house in the world, the white house, you know . The five people were infected in the entire country of new zealand during that same time. It is far more nefarious than i think saying, look, this is a contagious virus and doing the best we can. This is we havent done the best we can and purposely didnt do the best we can in terms of testing and advocating mask wearing and not keeping things shut down necessarily but not allowing large gatherings of people and indoor settings and all of that made differences around the world we didnt do. Not only surrender, we enabled this virus to really sort of take over. Pence is refusing to quarantine, the Vice President. He was exposed to marc short who was has covid19. E this. A different definition screen we can put up when constitutes an essential worker. Its jobs that preserve and protect National Security and Public Health. Jobs that are essential for the country to keep running. This is not that. In fact, and not to be overly ironic here but what he is doing potentially puts people at risk in regard to Public Health. If the goal is i need to be in this job because my job is essential to preserving Public Health in this country but in order to do that, i am going to potentially be Walking Around with a virus, not always even wearing a mask, potentially in fact, ing other people. Its almost the opposite. I dont want to be glib line youre saying, jake, but it is exactly the wrong thing to do. We know that testing is one strategy but people can test negative today and test positive tomorrow. I hope i know that the Vice President and the second lady have been tested, they are negative. But, you know, this is a concern for them and also a concern for everyone around them. Since President Trump returned to the campaign trail from his own bout with coronavirus, hes been actually making matters even worse. He has been falsely saying every day that the u. S. Is rounding the corner even though that is not true. We have the worst week ever of new infection. Several states are reporting record high hospitalizations and governors, democrats, republicans are saying their Health Systems are being overwhelmed. I dont understand it. Youd think that he would have some humility about this given the fact that according to himself, according to his own words, he almost died from this and, of course, he had this incredible therapeutics. What is your reaction . Yeah, im really surprised, you know, just as a doc, taking care of patients who have had these brushes with their own mortality or had severe illness. It typically is not only physical but psychological sort of gamechanger for them in terms of how they approach their lives. People exercise more after they have had some sort of heart problem and this is the opposite. Whether he feels this way or saying what he is saying, i have no way of knowing. Look at Chris Christie who spent seven days in the icu and came out essentially a changed man with regards his positioning on coronavirus and Wearing Masks. He is surprised that the Vice President is not quarantining, Chris Christie is saying that. This is a bit surprising. Jake, its that hospitalization number that i think is so critical because people, i think the number of people who become newly infected every day, im getting the sense that is starting to wash over people when we give those numbers. They are not really absorbing it. Its like too many numbers to absorb. Once you start running into a situation as you correctly mentioned where Hospital Systems are starting to feel like we are getting pretty full here and starting to look around. Do we need to start cancelling elective surgery and do we have enough and think about other fatalities outside of the hospital . Those are happening in many cities around the country. We did not need to do in that position. The same number of cases in new zealand yesterday that happened in the white house. That does not need to be happening here. That is what we know. This is an white house that keeps information from us. Mark meadows tried to hide the outbreak among the Vice President s staff and there might be more cases in the white house that they are not telling us about. What the Campaign Stops tell us about the strategy for the final day before election day and take a closer look at the seven states that could decide who takes the oath of office in january. With that triple whammy on wall streets plate, nerves are frayed and investors are buckling up what is expected to be a rocky road ahead the next few weeks for the stock market. Thank you, alison. While President Trump holds three rallies in pennsylvania today, joe biden just met with some voters outside of philadelphia but its not just pennsylvania. One glance at the map makes it clear where the biden team is focused in this closing stretches with stops in florida, texas, arizona, nevada, North Carolina and georgia and all of those states President Trump narrowly won in 2016. Joining me now, is Malika Henderson and abby phillips. Do you think its a smart strategy for the Biden Campaign in the final stretch to focus on reach states like iowa and georgia as opposed to just honing in on the states that they need, pennsylvania, wisconsin, michigan . I think its probably fine for the Biden Campaign to dabble in some of these reach states and especially if it puts the Trump Campaign on defense. That is is a pretty wellworn political strategy. Its really down to some core states for biden and the most central of them is pennsylvania where he was just a few minutes ago. There is, i think, no other state on the map that is more important for joe biden than pennsylvania. It makes his path incredibly significantly easier and make Donald Trumps path a lot harder. So iowa is a place that the Trump Campaign says they are doing very well but the fact that biden is going there forcing them to continue to invest time and resources into it is a sign biden is on the offense in this map but, at the same time, based on 2016, you cannot get overconfident at this stage. Nia, we saw donald Trump Holding three rallies in pennsylvania. Joe biden met with voters outside of chester and Delaware County. Its interesting that both see pennsylvania up for grabs. Its a state that donald trump narrowly won in 2016. Its sort of a home state for joe biden. He likes to talk about his roots in scranton. Yes, i think that everything abby said is exactly correct. Biden essentially needs a win, pennsylvania, wisconsin, and michigan and building that blue wall we saw a collapse in 2016. So there he is in chester, pennsylvania, an area with a lot of africanamericans and near philadelphia. That is what he needs to do. We, obviously, saw barack obama there as well in philadelphia. So getting those voters to come out and one of the things that also i think is important. We talk about the reach states he is going to. Iowa, folks are going to texas, arizona, and nevada. They are also down ballot races that are important that if youre joe biden you can bring some attention and energy to some of those down ballot races in iowa or a Competitive Senate race there and pennsylvania also down ballot races on the house side critical as well so a wholesale strategy they have not only there in person but also have kind of ad budget that the Trump Campaign doesnt have at this point. Abby, this is a remarkably consistent race for months poll wise. We know joe biden is closesing with the argument that President Trump has mishandles the coronavirus pandemic and hell fix it and then bring the economy back. That is his closing message. Im not exactly sure what the closing message is that im hearing from the Trump Campaign. What are you hearing and what do you expect to hear . I think the Trump Campaign has decided and this decision was made shortly after the president recovered from the coronavirus himself, that they have no choice really but to run on reopening the country, run on this idea that the virus is not actually the dominant factor in this race or in american life. It is a risky strategy but one i think resonates with some portion of the country. Somewhere between 30 and 40 . The way the Trump Campaign sees it is holding these massive rallies is, obviously, a Political Risk in one sense because it signed of emphasizes the superspreader nature of these events but it is such a critical get out the vote machine for the Trump Campaign. It is such an energizer for his base. You can see why they feel they have no choice but to do that. The president has a narrow path and cant afford to lose his own people so they are hyperfocused on that particularly at the expense of independent voters and swing voters. Right. And also this is notwithstanding the immorality of holding potential superspreader events in the middle of a pandemic. That is looking at the raw politics of it and forget about in fac infecting people. Nia, take a listen to this. We give out masks. We have they dont wear them. Well, its a free society. Youre not wearing one right now, jake. There is literally nobody in this room. Literally not one person in this studio. You are saying you wear a mask wherever you go. I know its not true and the American People know its not true. I wear a mask here and in my office and at home. 100 . I wear a mask when i walk in the haulw wahallway at cnn. I thought that was stunning. This is why the white house is a hot zone of coronavirus. You guys work at cnn. We literally wear masks everywhere. This is my mask where is mine . Here is mine. Literally we are always doing this when we walk down the street. I dont even understand it its stunning that he thinks its stunning that there is a process in place in Office Spaces that includes Wearing Masks all the time when youre out in the hallway. Our hallways here at cnn, we all know this, are fairly empty. Everyone is essentially working from home at this point. Peoples lives have changed and i wear a mask every time i go outside of my house and im sure you do too, to keep myself safe and keep my family safe and keep other people safe. This idea is stunned, oh, my god people wear masks all the time is an indictment of what has gone on at that white house and it explains why they had that first outbreak with the president and why they had the second outbreak with pence. I think we can suspect that with these superspreader events they are Holding Around the country there are likely outbreaks to those events well and well see how that goes. A lot of reporting and tracking we will catch up to that at some point. My goodness. What a stunning interview and admission from mark meadows that they dont have any process in place at the white house. I just couldnt believe it. Yeah. First, d. C. Has one of the highest rates of mask wearing in the entire country with the possible exception of that one building at 1600 pennsylvania avenue. Im sorry, 1600 black lives matter plaza. Its telling the Biden Campaign at the end of this xcampaign is hitting the streets and getting out every votes as possible. 3 million votes already cast in early voting here in North Carolina. Jeff, thanks. Remember harry enton spends every day analyzing the polls for cnn. You say results in just seven key states could determine the outcome of the election. What are those states . Let me see your map. Sure. So these are the seven closest states that donald trump won in 2016. Its arizona in the southwest. You go florida in the southeast. North carolina, pennsylvania, michigan, wisconsin, and then, finally, nebraska second Congressional District that is the seventh of the closest contests. Those are the seven contests im watching most closely. You think biden could win most of those . I absolutely do. The reason i do is just take a look at the polling averages in those states right now or those contests. What you see is that biden is ahead in all of them. The leads are somewhat bigger in michigan. Nebraska second Congressional District and wisconsin and pennsylvania leads five points or above there. Lower in the other states. If you give those states to joe biden and states that Hillary Clinton won in 2016, you get biden 334. If you just give biden pennsylvania, michigan, and wisconsin, plus the States Hillary clinton won in 2016, that also gets him about 270 electoral votes. Today, joe biden in Chester County, pennsylvania and also Delaware County, pennsylvania. Trump is also in Pennsylvania Holding three different rallies. Its competitive. I know Biden Campaign does not feel its in their pocket and do not think they have it. But you say there are two counties in pennsylvania that youre watching in particular . Which ones are those . I agree and say that pennsylvania to me is arguably the most important state this election cycle but within pennsylvania im watching erie county in the northwest and then North Hampton in the southeast right on the edge of the range of the Philadelphia Media market. The reason is both of those are counties that went for barack obama in 2012 and donald trump in 2016 and 2018 senate race went with a democratic candidate bob casey. To me they are bellwether counties. Whoever wins both of those counties are the winner in pennsylvania come 2020. Erie represented by congressman and after that governor tom ridge, a republican who has endorsed joe biden. Interesting. Hey enten, thank you. With the number of new coronavirus cases climbing to the highest level of the pandemic yet, former fda commissioner during the Trump AdministrationScott Gottlieb is now calling for a National Mask mandate in a new oped in the wall street journal. Dr. Anthony fauci has suggested the same thing as well. Joining me now, is a professor of medicine and Infectious Disease at the university of alabama birmingham. I want to lead you a portion of this oped from Scott Gottlieb. Do you agree with his assessment here . Is it now time to implement a National Requirement that we all wear masks in public . Absolutely. We have seen in alabama, for example, when the governor issued a mask mandate back in july that our cases came down in the next three or four weeks. So there is no questions that masks work. The thing that puzzles me is why is there so much resistance to a mask . We all want to be as open as possible and masks make it possible for us to get back to something toward a normal life. So why we are fighting that, i dont quite understand. When you look at it on a statebystate level, the data on mask mandates isnt as clear as perhaps in alabama. For example, california and vermont have mask mandates but they have seen daily new cases surge by more than 50 the past week. States that dont have mask mandates such as north and south dakota are also seeing significant rises. What does this say to you . The fact that places have mask mandates are having this surge . The mandate is only a regulation. Its how enforced it is. Last week in the washington post, there was a nice graphic that showed a correlation between the states that had pretty good compliance with mask wearing and lower case numbers than those state who did not have many people Wearing Masks. In fact, correlation was quite striking. We know they work. Again, we have talked about this over and over and im sure the audience is tired hearing about this, but we all kind of want to get out of jail free card that we can get back to normal without any action on our part. We have the highest daily average case load than we have ever during the entire epidemic and there is no signs of it slowing down. So we have got to do something and nobody wants to go back to lockdown. So why dont we all just wear masks and move on . I dont know. I dont have an answer for you. President trump has faced criticism for continuing to hold these rallies in which masks are not required. There is no social distancing. Crowds bunched together. Listen to what one trump supporter told cnns ryan nobles about why he doesnt think he needs to wear a face covering. Reporter he gets criticism for holding these rallies. Do you think that is fair with everybody shouldertoshoulder and not a lot of people Wearing Masks . Do you that is a problem . I really dont think its a problem. Therapy outside where there is free air and not everybody is spitting droplets everywhere. That trump supporter says we are outside, there is free air and not everybody is spitting droplets everywhere. How would you respond to that rallygoer . Any truth to what he said . Better to have an event outside than inside, i guess. Its absolutely better to be outside but when you have premium crowded together and especially when they are not just talking but cheering and screaming, for the person who is infected in the group, they are spreading a lot of virus into the cloud around them that other people can breathe. I just got out of covid clinic and why im still in my scrubs. While i was there today i saw a woman who went to an out doors wedding and at that wedding one person infected 22 others. This was three weeks ago. Being outside is help but only one part of the equation. Wearing a mask and keeping distance and staying outdoors as much as possible. We have been saying the same thing almost nine months so if we just did it we could make a difference in the epidemic. For some reason i dont know why its politicized. Its unfortunate but we have to rise above the politics and do what is patriotic which is protect ourselves, our family and as well as our community. Quickly if you could, dr. Saag. President trump at a rally suggested the reason the numbers are so high is because doctors are cooking the books because they get paid more if somebody dies from covid as opposed if they die from cancer and as somebody on the front lines of this horrific pandemic, i was wondering what your reaction was to hathat . It was hard to hear. No doctor that i know of wants this epidemic here. No Hospital Administrator wants it. We would rather be back to normal just like everybody listening to the broadcast today. To say that there is a motivation to do this is frankly a little bit absurd. Dr. Saag, thank you. Our coverage continues right now. This is cnn breaking news welcome to our viewers here in the United States and around the world. Im wolf blitzer in the situation room. We are following breaking news. The coronavirus death toll here in the United States is ntoppin 225,000 people with more than 8. 6 million confirmed cases. And in a very disturbing new development, the daily average number of new cases is now at the highest point since the pandemic began. As the crisis worsens by almost every measure, President Trump is again claiming the virus is under
