Ill be honest, i never could imagine anything like this. I want to start by saying thank you to our law enforcement. Thank you to the fearless fbi agents. And thank you to the brave Michigan StatePolice Troopers who participated in this operation, acting under the leadership of colonel joe gasper. I want to thank attorney general nestle and u. S. Attorneys birch and snyder and their teams for pursuing cripple charges that hopefully will lead to convictions bringing these sick and depraved men to justice. As mom with two teenager daughters and three stepsons, my husband and i are eternally grateful to everyone who put themselves in harms way to keep our family safe. 2020 has been a hard year for all of us. Hard for our doctors and nurses and truckdrivers, Grocery Store workers. Its been hard for the teachers and students and parents. Hard for those who have had to stay isolated to stay safe. Its not over yet, but here is what i know. Were michiganders, we have grit, were tough as hell. We made it through the recession, floods and polar vortexes. But none of us have faced covid19 in our lifetimes. Ive said it a number of times, were not one anothers enemy. This virus is our enemy. Its relentless. It doesnt care if youre a republican or democrat, young or old, rich or poor. It doesnt care if were tired of it. It threatens us all, our lives, our families, our jobs, our businesses, our economy. It preys on our elderly and medically vulnerable residents, and it has exposed deep inequities in our society. This should be a moment for National Unity where we all pull together as americans to meet this challenge head on with the same might and muscle that put a man on the moon. Seeing the humanity in one another and doing our part to help our country get through this, instead our head of state has spent the past seven months denying science, ignoring his own health experts, stoking distrust, fomenting anger and giving comfort to those who spread fear and hatred and division. Just last week the president of the United States stood before the American People and refused to condemn White Supremacists and hate groups like these two michigan militia groups. Stand back and stand by, he told them. Stand back and stand by. Hate groups heard the president s words not as a rebuke but as a rallying cry, as a call to action. When our leaders speak, their words matter. They carry weight. When our leaders meet with, encourage, fraternize with domestic terrorists, they legitimatize their actions and they are complicit. When they stoke and contribute to hate speech, they are complicit. In 1981, president Ronald Reagan spoke to naacps annual convention. His comments stand in sharp contrast to what we have seen on the national and state level from his own beloved party in 2020. He said a few isolated groups in the back water of American Life still hold perverted notions of what america is all about. Recently in some places in the nation, theres been a disturbing recurrence of bigotry and violence. Then reagan sent a direct message to those who still adhere to senseless racism and religious prejudice. You are the ones who are out of step with our society, he said. You are the ones who willfully violate the meaning of the dream that is america. This country, because of what it stands for, will not stand for your conduct. So let me say this loud and clear. Hatred, bigotry and violence have no place in the great state of michigan. If you break the law or conspire to commit heinous acts of violence against anyone, we will find you. We will hold you accountable, and we will bring you to justice. For the past seven months, ive made tough choices to keep our state safe. These have been gut wrenching decisions no governor has ever had to make. I get it. Life has been hard for us all. When i get out of bed every morning i think about High School Seniors who miss graduation ceremonies, those that miss weddings and funerals. I think about all the moms working from home, making breakfast every day, logging their kids onto zoom class and doing laundry. Think about Small Business owners who spent a lifetime doing something great who are now hanging on by their fingernails just to keep the lights on. A disruption this virus has caused to our daily lives is immeasurable, and its already taken the lives of more than 210,000 americans, including over 6800 right here in michigan. As painful as these losses are, our hard work and sacrifices have saved thousands of lives. We have one of the strongest economic recovers in the nation. Make no mistake, there will be more hard days ahead. But i want the people of michigan to know this. As your governor, i will never stop doing everything in my power to keep you and your family safe. You dont have to agree with me, but i do ask one thing. Never forget that we are all in this together. Lets show a little kindness and a lot more empathy. Lets give one another a little grace, and lets take care of each other. Wear your mask, stay 6 feet apart, wash your hands frequently, and look out for your neighborhoods. We are michiganders. Youve been listening to Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, a democrat, speaking for the First Time Since the fbi filed a plot to kidnap her. Lets bring in Shimon Prokupecz who has been following the developments. Shimon, what more can you tell us about the arrests made today . Reporter yeah, six individuals in connection to the alleged plot to kidnap the governor but there are also several other people arrested as well by state authorities, which the authorities there say were part of a militia. Of course, this was all in hopes, according to authorities there, to overthrow the government, their unhappiness with the governor, and just generally their unhappiness with government overall. One of the pieces of evidence that the fbi says they have is a video from one of the ring leaders of those six individuals where he talks about being unhappy about some of the closures put in place by the governor there in michigan, closing a gym, because of coronavirus. They talk about how they used undercover agents, had informants. In fact, one of the informants in this case met one of the suspects at the june rally there at the michigan capital, the Second Amendment rally, which, of course, garnered a lot of attention. Working with these undercovers and working with these informants, the fbi was able to break up this plot. They say the fbi they first discovered this plot early this year on social media. From there they worked it. They have video. They have wiretaps. They had someone one wear a wire in a meeting where the members of this group trained. In one case they tried to use an explosive device as part of their training. It did not work. All in all, the fbi was able to get in and try and prevent ultimately from this group and their attempt to kidnap the governor. They also, talked about how to kidnap her from a summer home, vacation home, did surveillance on her properties. Clearly the fbi thought this was real. Clearly thoughts thought this was real. They made the arrest after members of this group made an exchange of money for explosives and exchanged Tactical Gear so they moved in at that point and made the arrest. Shimon, thank you very much. Congressman, thanks so much for joining us. I want to get the reaction to this extensive plot to kidnap michigans governor and overthrow the government. Yeah, this is obviously serious. If you recall, jake, this isnt the first time the michigan militia has gone to the extreme of doing something dangerous. Timothy mcveigh and nichols lived in michigan for a time and attended some of the michigan militia meetings. What they found over the years, some of the folks at the michigan militia portion didnt feel they were aggressive enough and split off. We lost mike rogers. Well go back to him as soon as his video comes back. Obviously we should let you know about this programming note that Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer will be on erin burnett this evening, 7 00 p. M. Eastern. Lets turn to the politics lead. Complete and utter chaos. This afternoon saying President Trump wants to delay the second trumpbiden debate. That after saying he was pulling out of the second debate all together. Calling the move to have them appear remotely not acceptable. The suggestion the candidates go to remote town hall participation came after President Trump tested positive for coronavirus and frankly after it became clear that the president and the white house were not going to fully disclose details about his illness, including when he last tested negative. The white house has not been honest about the president s infection, and that literally could affect the health and mortality of others. Its a shameful and shocking development, though perhaps not out of character. The Joe Biden Campaign announced the democratic nominee will instead of the debate town hall hold his own town hall next thursday given trumps withdrawal from participation. Lets go to cnns White House Correspondent kaitlan collins. Kaitlan, this whole nation has had to adjust to virtual reality, millions of children learning online but President Trump calling a virtual debate unacceptable. Doing so, by the way, while he was on the phone with one of his favorite channels. Why is it unacceptable . He made it pretty clear in that interview that one of the reasons he doesnt like that idea is they could mute him easily, which is something a lot of people talked about, jake, after that last debate where it was constant interruption, basically, from the president. So thats one of the reasons. I think another reason they were not consulted before hand. The president found out moments before it was officially announced. Jake, if these two candidates appeared virtually, it would be joe biden and donald trump appear on the computer screens. It would basically be impossible for viewers not to view that through the lens of the ongoing pandemic. That is something the president and the Trump Campaign have tried to shift voters attention away from because they know the president doesnt rate well when it comes to the pandemic. His numbers are incredibly bad with that. So i think they want they know they are going to have to nl it at a debate. They dont want it to be the whole focus, which it will be if they do it virtually because the president was diagnosed within two weeks of that original date. They could move it to be in person a week later than it was scheduled. There are questions whether there will be a third debate because they seem divided over that. The president said the other day, dont let the virus dominate your life. Too late. Its dominating our lives. President trump, who is still infected with coronavirus, and as far as we know contagious, hes already talking about starting back up rallies . Yes, he is. He said he wanted to do a rally last night during the Vice President ial debate. He felt like he could do one tonight. He says hes no longer contagious. We should note a medical expert speaking on behalf of the president hasnt confirmed that. They havent confirm the president has tested negative. Its only been one week since he tested positive. Because were not having the opportunity to hear from the president s doctor in person and be able to ask him questions, the president is allowed to put his own spin on his health, which is what hes doing by saying hes essentially clean and not contagious, the things that he said this morning. So instead weve been relying on written statements from dr. Conley, the white house physician. The white house said a few moments ago were likely to get another one of those today. That would mean three days without the president s doctor appearing in front of reporters like he had been doing. All right. Kaitlan collins, thanks so up make. Lets bring in jessica dean. Jessica, the Biden Campaign is reversing course. First they said joe biden wanted a second debate. Now they are saying trump with drew so were not going through with it. Were going to do a town hall. Whats the reasoning behind that. They said once President Trump pulled out, they said were going to do our own thing october 13th. Thats a town hall in philadelphia. They want to have that experience with joe biden talking to voters. Then when President Trump and his campaign asked for the debates to be pushed back and delayed, the Biden Campaign released another statement with Kate Bedingfield saying thats absolutely unacceptable. Let me read you what they said. Trumps erratic behavior doesnt allow him to rewrite the calendar and pick new dates of his choosing. We look forward in participating with the final debate october 22nd already tied for the latest debate in 40 years. Donald trump can show up or decline again. That is his choice. Jake, its interesting to note, they have also asked onthe Biden Campaign has asked for that final debate to be a town hall format. If you zoom out for a second, the Biden Campaign over the last several months has tried as much as it can to make this a referendum about President Trumps Covid Response and his leadership. When you look at this, they have a debate now being changed because the president has come down with coronavirus and he is acting erratically in this way pulling out of debates. President trump suggesting he got coronavirus at a very specific white house event. Is there any proof of that at all . Stay with us. The president claiming hes no longer contagious, an assertion hes not qualified to make. Frankly we do not know how far into his infection he is. The president claiming he will be immune to coronavirus even though scientists still do not know definitively whether Covid Patients develop lasting immunity. The president calling his infection a blessing from god. Only now that he has experienced it himself, he says, does he believe he understands the virus. Hundreds of thousands of americans have lost their lives to the virus and consider it a curse, if anything. One might note those individuals did not get to get helicoptered to walter reed to experience the best Health Care Anyone in the world can have. Those statements and obscenities werent enough the president suggested he could have contracted the virus from a reception held for gold star families. Beyond the ugliness of apparently blaming gold star families for the infection, the assertion doesnt check out. Several people say they contracted the virus before the gold star event at the white house or saturday september 26th after the white house held outdoor and indoor events. The reality is we do not know so much about the president s infection or how he got it, because the white house refuses to answer so many questions about it, especially this key question, when did President Trump last test negative . Minutes ago a white house official claimed that is private medical information. White house officials admitting the president is not tested daily as they previously claimed he was. Rather hes tested, quote, regularly, whatever that means. Its entirely possible the president was tested between the infection and ohio, between the infection and rally and fundraiser in minnesota, between infection and fundraiser in new jersey. Its entirely possible he was not. If not, that is astoundingly reckless behavior, though, in keeping with the president s Pandemic Response since january. I want to bring in dr. Paul o offit. Thank you for joining us. I want you to listen to President Trump describing his current condition today. Yannick im contagious at all. First of all, if im at a rally, i stand by myself far away from everybody whether i was or not. I still wouldnt go to a rally if i was contagious. Doctor, from what we know about the president s infection, which, granted, is not much, is it possible the president is no longer contagious . The cdc recommends you should consider yourself contagious for 10 days after your first on set of symptoms. Also, if you get tested, youre assuming the test is 100 accurate, which is not true of any test. So to err on the side of caution, you should ohe should consider himself cautious for ten days after the first symptom. If hes claiming a gold star event, the fact is he doesnt wear a mask. Number one, social distance. Number two, wear a mask. Do those things and you can dramatically get on top of this infection. He sets a terrible example for everybody in the country when you see him walk around crowds without a mask on. Its unexcusable. President trump refusing to go forward with the debate that he would do remotely joe biden would, too. He also wants to restart rallies. Youve seep these rallies, no masks required, no distancing. Given what we know, whats the soonest date that that could happen safely, if at all . Again, i think until we get on top of this infection, you cant have rallies where people are all bunched together, usually without masks on. Its hard to get on top of this infection. In his defense every country struggles with this. Three ways to do it. One, most importantly, social distance. Two, wear a mask. Three, a vaccine. If im confronted with somebody who is contagious like him, the number one thing i would want to do is stand 6 feet away. If i dont have that option, number two would be to wear a mask. The third thing would be a vaccine. It goes social distancing and the mask are far more powerful than a vaccine but he plays it the opposite way. He pretends or acts as if the vaccine will be the magic powder sprinkled across the land and its all going to go away. Hes choosing not to go with the most powerful thing we have, which is social distancing and a mask. Dr. Offit do you trust what you hear from the medical team about his health . Sadly no. As a doctor, your job is to tell the truth. If you feel you cant tell the truth, then say that. Im uncomfortable giving confidential information, the president asked me not to give information. When the doctor was asked the question, is the president on supplemental oxygen. Hes not on supplemental oxygen now or yesterday. Has he ever been on supplemental oxygen. Just answer the question. Just say, yes, eats been on supplemental oxygen. Dont misrepresent information, then no one trusts you. Its not right. Were not very good liars. Leave the lying to people who are better at it. President trump also said this about his infection. Take a listen. Remember this, when you catch it, you get better, and then youre immune. You know . Soon as everything goes away for me, youre immune. Do we know that for a fact . Where is the science on that. Certainly not everybody gets better since 200,000 lives have been lost. Here is what we can say. The natural infection does appear to protect against moderate to severe disease. Youve seen a number of cases where theres been second infections. Those second infections are usually much more mild. Thats fine. Thats frankly what we would expect from a vaccine. We want it to protect against moderate disease to keep you out of the hospital and keep you from dying. Thats what i think we can expect from this. But its not true of everyone. So he may actually be reinfected and still shed the virus where symptomatically or mildly asymptomatically. We should always wear a mask. Assume everyone you come in contact is asymptomatically infected. Just assume that and well be better off. Can you think of any reason why the white house would not want to disclose when President Trump last tested negative . Its just all part of this kind of massive denialism. To get on top of this pandemic, you need hard work and hard thinking. What we get from this administration is denialism and magical thinking, whether its hydroxychloroquine or convalescent plasma or bleach or uv light. We just want it to magically go away instead of doing the hard work that comes with distancing and mask wearing. We could go back to work and school more comfortably but this administration does not set the tonight for how to do all the hard work necessary to do that. Its really frustrating. The president also appeared to blame an event with gold star families in the east room for his nfbs. Theres no evidence its true. That was sunday september 27th. It doesnt fit with what we know given all the people that got infected the day before on saturday september 26th. What do you make of that . Either way, whether its in the rose garden ceremony or whether with the gold star families, he could protect himself and others around him by wearing a mask. The fact that everybody in that picture that you showed, everybody in the rose garden isnt wearing a mask, it is in some ways out of tribute to him, out of respect for him. You dont wear a mask, so were not going to wear a mask. Its a terrible message to send. Its the exact opposite of the message he wants to send. Either way, its his fault for not wearing a mask. I think if youre nancy pelosi you are watching a president at a critical time in his election just days out of the hospital and on this medication, and youre also seeing his doctors not be transparent about his status, his health status. Its also clear this president , at least so far, im not sure, if we seen him live and in person talking . I know he called into the Fox News Network and talked to an anchor there for some time. But that in some ways, i think, could be alarming as well. As much as he is declaring that he is cured and feeling younger than he has, you know, in years, his behavior does suggest theres something maybe more serious going on. I think they are raising questions and a lot of americans also have questions and want answers from his doctors. Abby, without question everything nia said is correct. The president is behaving erratically, on seniors mrious medication that could theoretically cause that. Theres no chance in hell his cabinet will invoke the 25th amendment even though Speaker Pelosi said she would discuss that tomorrow. Thats the amendment used to remove unwell president s from office. If you look at the president s twitter feed, looney tunes caucus talking about nancy pelosi staging a coup. Was this wise of her to talk about . You know, shes poking the bear. Nancy pelosi knows how to get under Donald Trumps skin. She knows this is something hes very sensitive about, his health, and also the implication that he could be removed from office by members of his cabinet or members of his own party. So i do think shes throwing something out there she knows is going to cause the president to act even more erratically. Whether or not this is a serious thing, i think,es almost beside the point. We are less than a month away from a president ial election. But in terms of the ability to distract President Trump from a lot of things that are going on, to be honest, it seems thats what this is really about. I have no doubt nancy pelosi believes President Trump is impaired. I also think she knows theres no chance this is going to happen. I think thats smart, your suggestion shes trying to poke the bear. Nia, President Trump called in to fox business nearly an hour earlier today. Among his remarks he called senator Kamala Harris, the Vice President ial nominee on the democratic side, calling her a monster, calling her unlikable. The president has Serious Problems with women voters right now. I dont know that thats the wisest approach to call a woman politician a monster and unlikable. What do you think . Its not the wisest approach. Its terrible. Listen, he is doing terribly of women of all races. We tend to focus on white women but older women, older africanamerican women. This wont help him. He doesnt seem to have any strategy. Hes doubling down on all the things we know about this president , that is to traffic in sexist rhetoric, racist rhetoric as well. You have those two things converging in what he is talking about and claiming about Kamala Harris. I thought Kamala Harris was fairly good last night, and im sure he watched that and im sure hes threatened by Kamala Harris. He clearly does go after particularly goes after women he feels sort of threatened by. I think thats whats going on here. Listen, it wont help him with women. Hes bleeding support with him. Women who vote for him, particularly white women who voted for him in 2016 are fleeing that party. I think youll see more of that with those comments. Again, this is the president weve come to know, particularly when it comes to women of color. Abby, President Trump suggesting he may have contracted coronavirus from gold star families at an event that he held on september 27th, sunday. Gold star families are people who lost a loved one in combat. Take a listen. They come within an inch of my face sometimes. They want to hug me and they want to kiss me. And they do. And frankly, im not telling them to back up. Im not doing it. But i did say its like, you know, obviously dangerous. Abby, the time line makes no sense based on what we know from the president s infection that he got it from the gold star families. The idea of blaming it on people who lost a loved one in war is beyond the pale. Its ridiculous. We should remind people when hope hicks was diagnosed with coronavirus, one of the first things the president said about that situation was that perhaps she got it from greeting members of the military in the course of her official duties as adviser to the president. So this is not the first time the president has floated these kinds of ridiculous theories. In fact, it is probably more likely that the president put these gold star families in danger by having a massive event at the white house the day before in which we know at least nine people who later contracted the virus attended that event both outside and inside.
