Says, a virus that has now killed killed nearly 210,000 americans and infected 7. 4 Million People in the u. S. , many of whom are still battling Serious Health effects. As for the president saying he feels better than he did 20 years ago, thats great, though one has to wonder how much of that is because of the steroids he has been given. Should the president be leaving for the white house . Thats now a question. Its now a coronavirus hot spot of its own, of course, the white house. The nations top Infectious Disease expert, dr. Anthony fauci, told cnn earlier today that coronavirus patients should isolate for ten days after First Showing symptoms. Which means if President Trump first showed symptoms last thursday, he should be isolated until at least next sunday, a week from yesterday. Dr. Fauci, of course, is not involved in the president s care. Any minute we are expecting to get an update from the president s physician, and we will bring that to you live. Lets get right to cnns Caitlyn Collins at the white house. Caitlyn, the president says he will be leaving walter reed, which sources have been telling cnn hes been anxious to do. Of course, by going to the white house, he is putting everybody at the white house of risk of catching the virus that he has. Reporter yeah, the questions are what is the white house going to look like with the president who we know has coronavirus there, alongside the first lady, who also has coronavirus. As youve seen, several officials in the west wing are now growing that list of people in the president s circle that have it. The question and the reason President Trump went to walter reed 72 hours ago, almost, not even there yet, was because officials worried that if something happened, he would not have access to that level of care that is afforded to him at walter reed, and that is the reason why they moved him, in case his condition deteeriorate and they would not be able to move him later on. Now he is coming back, and the question is why doctors think medically thats the best decision at this point given we know how Vulnerable People are at this time of contracting coronavirus. And the message in the president s tweet saying, dont let coronavirus dominate your life, its important to remember that the president has his own helicopter to go to his own floor of the hospital where he received a drug, jake, where fewer than ten people outside of a Clinical Trial have gotten in the United States for coronavirus. He has access to a level of care, understandably, that a lot of other people dont. So when hes telegraphing that message of what a concern coronavirus is, its important to keep in mind he is getting the vip of vip treatments in the last few days. The American People can see that almost 210,000 of their fellow citizens in america have died because of this pandemic, and they should, in fact, be concerned about it and behave accordingly. Its notable, however, caitlyn, the president is saying not only is he being released, hes continuing to downplay the severity of this crisis. I have to say, there doesnt seem to be any medical reason for him to leave. Hes taking drugs, serious drugs, that require a regimen of several days, and hospitalization is required for at least one of them that i know of, and fauci says that once youve shown symptoms, you need to isolate for ten days. So i cant think of a medical reason for him to leave. Well talk to sanjay gupta in a second. But certainly i understand he might feel a political reason. Reporter he certainly does feel a political reason, because we know that since hes been in the hospital, hes been incredibly critical of the people who are speaking for him. He does not like what theyve been saying. He thinks theyre sending the wrong message, and of course, the president has always believed that any kind of sign of something going on with your health is a sign of weakness, so hes been very frustrated with his chief of staff mark meadows after he revealed the president had pretty concerning vitals, and hes been frustrated with his own medical team and what theyve been saying publicly. Thats probably why it was the president who announced hes leaving the hospital shortly before his doctors had a chance to speak to reporters and really explain the thinking behind this decision. So he has been downplaying it because hes been eager to get back. But, jake, you have to wonder, the president is coming back. Its not because he is going to the hospital because something happened. He is putting staff and others at risk by leaving walter reed and going back to the white house in a matter of hours. Not to mention if you let politics make the decision regarding your medical care, what happens if, god forbid, something happens that he needs to go back to walter reed, will they be afraid to take him back there because of how he is physically . Donald trumps advisers have been urging President Trump to stay at the hospital, which is sound medical advice. Tell us about that. Reporter i was told by a source close to the white house that as recently as this morning, the president s advisers were asking him to stay in the hospital. They were telling him pretty clearly, look, mr. President , you dont want to have to come back here, and that is the overriding concern of many of the president s advisers, both inside and outside the white house, who are concerned that the prospects that the president could take a turn for the worse, causing him, once again, to be flown back to Walter Reed Medical Center for not a first hospitalization, but what would be a second hospitalization. Obviously they are concerned about the optics and everything that would go around that. Not only just for the president s image as president of the United States to the rest of the world, but we are less than a month away from a president ial election, and these are not the optics they want. The president , though, is focused on the shortterm optics, and thats whats concerning to so many of his advisers. He said in this tweet he feels better than he did 20 years ago, but while he may be feeling better, hes on several drugs that are helping him to feel better. But the concern is what happens in a few days . And so many doctors, every medical expert that weve had on cnn, has raised the concern that what happens between days 5 and 7 when there is this potential for inflammation, there is this potential for complication from the drugs, from the virus itself, all of that still weighing. But, jake, we are expected to hear from the medical experts, the doctors who are treating the president of the United States, including his personal physician, dr. Sean conley. But, of course, jake, we know that they havent been sharing all the information with us, and we are still waiting on many details about the president s condition, including, for example, what his lung scans and chest xrays showed over the weekend. We were told there were expected findings, but we havent been told whether the president has pneumonia or some kind of lung scarring or anything else. A lot of the questions still to be answered, jake. Hopefully, hopefully well get some of those answers in the next hour. Jeremy diamond at walter reed, thanks very much. Well come back to you. We are expecting dr. Conley and other doctors on the president s medical team to speak to us. I want to talk right now to dr. Sanjay gupta. Sanjay, im just a humble cave man. I have no idea about medicine. Is there a medical reason for President Trump to go home right now . Its everything you and i have been talking about since friday, which would seem to suggest hes on serious, serious drugs that you need to be in the hospital to take. Yes, he is. And some of them, a couple of them he has not finished his course. Those are iv medications. Hell need to get them at the white house, which is unusual. Obviously the white house is different than most houses, but still, thats unusual. Jake, one thing i think is really important to point out, we already knew this this was hes a vulnerable patient because of his age, because of his preexisting conditions. There was already going to be concern, and you and i were talking about that all day on friday, the heightened level of concern. Since then we knew he dropped his oxygen levels a couple times to point where he needed to get oxygen. Thats concerning. Dropping your oxygen to that level, that means his lungs were having a hard time keeping up. That put him in a different stratification. We know a memo went out saying he had unstable vital signs at times, we know he spiked a fever. We know hes been on some medications that havent been fully approved. One of those medications, steroids, its interesting, jake, if i can explain this. You have a virus. You are given an antiviral like remdesivir so it doesnt replicate so fast. Youre given steroids to decrease the amount of stabilization in the body. Two points. One is theyre counteracting forces, but you want to do that in the hospital so you can pinpointmanage the care. But the other thing is the steroids may be making him artificially feel better than he actually is, treating very much the symptoms, not the disease. And thats why everyone keeps saying a few days from now, he could have a bounce. You want to be in a hospital at that point. Thats basic medical care. I dont think if you were anybody else in any other hospital being taken care of by pulmonologists and Infectious Disease doctors that they would say this is a good idea, to leave. You and i discussed it before, as the commander in chief, he actually has authority over his physicians who are all in the navy. Its not just dr. Conley, its commander conley, and i do wonder how much that is factoring in to the doctors doing what he says, because unlike a civilian doctor like yourself, they actually have to answer to him. I want to ask you about this steroid. He said, i feel better than i did 20 years ago. You expressed that might just be because he is on the steroid. A friend of mine was on this exact same steroid when edna mon he had pneumonia a few years ago. He said it made him manic, he said it gave him a lot of energy, but it was unhinged, in a way. It affected his mood and affected his attitude. When you see President Trump making these decisions about his own health care, sending out a tweet like this, dont be afraid of covid, its just a fact that the steroid could be affecting his mood. I think theres no question, jake, and even in neurosurgery, we treat people with steroids all the time heres dr. Conley, sanjay. Well come back to you on the other side. Were going to listen in. Good afternoon, everyone. Thank you for being here. Over the past 24 hours, the president has continued to improve. Hes met or exceeded all standard hospital discharge criteria. Hell receive another dose of remdesivir here today, and then we plan to get him home. Its been more than 72 hours since his last fever. Oxygen levels, including ambulatory saturations and his lack of breathing, are all normal. Though he may not be entirely out of the woods yet, our team and i agree that all his evaluations, and more importantly, his clinical status support his return home where hell be surrounded by world class medical care 24 7. I would like to bring in dr. Dooley for plaintiffs specifics. His Blood Pressure was 74 over 178 and his heart rate was 68 beats a minute and his last saturation was 97 . He currently does not endorse any respiratory complaints, and aside from our evaluation with the Multidisciplinary Team this morning, has maintained a full schedule ambulating and working on the white house medical unit. Ill turn it over to dr. Gary garibaldi. Yesterday the president received his third dose of recommemdesivir remdesivir. His kidney action continued to be normal. Our plan is to give him the fourth treatment of remdesivir before he leaves for the white house, and we plan to give him his fifth dose at the white house tomorrow. He is eating and drinking, and id like to turn it over to another doctor to give directions on infection control. Good afternoon, everyone. First of all, i just want to say what an honor its been to be part of this medical team behind me and to care for the president. Since the president s arrival at walter reed, hes received medical management that remains in line with national, clinical, societal guidelines for covid19 treatment. We have worked with laboratories in the area, state of the art facilities to obtain testing to establish the president as well as his ability to transmit the virus to others. Also we ever workhave worked vey with the the walter reed team to ensure that we are looking at infectious control strategies so the president can safely return to his residence. With that i will turn it over to dr. Conley who will answer any final questions. I mentioned it saturday, but id like to reiterate myself just how grateful the president and i are to the men and women at walter reed, my colleagues at johns hopkins, as well as the many federal and private institutions we have received support from. As long as everything continues on the trek were experiencing right now, at this time, as the president already tweeted out, the goal is to get him home later today. With that ill take a couple questions. How can he be taken back to the white house when he was given steroids, which is usually given to patients on ventilators or low oxygen, so did you overtreat him . And if hes still on that medication, how is it safe for him to return to the white house . We send patients home with medications all the time. In fact, yesterday afternoon he probably met most of his discharge requirements safely from the hospital. Hes returning to a facility, the white house medical unit, thats staffed 24 7, topnotch physicians, nurses, pas, and the team here behind me are going to continue it support us in that nature. Dr. Conley, what effective Safety Measures are you taking . How was it safe for him to walk around in a cloth mask yesterday, and how is it safe to return to the white house . How is any of this safe . The president has been surrounded by medical and security staff for days wearing full ppe. And yesterday the u. S. Secret Service Agents were in that same level of ppe for a very short period of time. We worked with our Infectious Disease experts to make some recommendations for how to keep everything safe down at the white house for the president and those around him. Were looking at where hes going to be able to carry out his duties, office space, and ill just say that its in line with everything weve been doing upstairs for the last several days. Reporter on testing, can you tell us when he had his last negative test . Was it thursday, was it wednesday . Do you remember when he had his last negative test . I dont want to go backwards. Reporter was there Contact Tracing for people who were around him . The Contact Tracing is being done, i understand. Im not involved with that. Reporter how was it this was something he pushed for . We try to get patients home and out of the hospital as quickly as is safe and reasonable. Every day a patient stays in a hospital unnecessarily is a risk to themselves. Right now there is nothing thats being done upstairs here that we cant safely conduct down home. Reporter you initially said 7 to 10 days is a window you said you would be concerned about. I dont think were there yet, so do you have concerns about potential reversal and how are you going to address that if that were to happen . Youre correct. Thats why we remain cautiously optimistic and on guard, because were a bit on uncharted territory when it comes to a patient who received the therapies he has so early in the course. Were looking to this weekend. If we can get through to monday with him remaining the same or improving, better yet. Then we will all take that final deep sigh relief. As i said, 24 7 world class medical care surrounding him down there. Were not going to miss anything that we would have caught up here. Reporter hes physically going to be in the white house. How do you keep him safely quarantined . I wish i could go into that more, but i just cant. Why did he get dexamethasone treatment . We talked yesterday about the drops in his oxygen, and we discussed that as a team and elected to start it early in case that persisted or worsened. The potential risks and side effects we all discussed. We looked at the data and decided that we would rather, you know, push ahead on it than hold and risk, you know, the opposite. Wh reporter what about ct scans and xrays . Reporter what about travel . As far as travel goes, well see. Reporter on his mental status, can you talk about whether he has any neurological symptoms . Does he have any side effects from his medications, any fog effects from the virus . I think youve seen the videos and tweets. Youll see him shortly hes back, yeah. Reporter is there pneumonia or any inflammation in his lungs at all . Weve done routine standard imaging. Im just not at liberty to discuss. Reporter so youre actively not telling us what those lung scans show, just to be clear . There are hipaa rules and regulations that restrict me to share those things for his safety and his own health and reasons. Reporter you said his oxygen dropped several times. Can you share how many times he was on oxygen . You said you would check with the nursing staff yesterday. Yes, two episodes like we talked about yesterday, and both times he received a little bit of oxygen and recovered quickly. Reporter was that oxygen required . No, it wasnt required. He wasnt short of breath, he wasnt looking ill. It was more of us trying to anticipate needs and see how he would respond. In both cases he came right off. He didnt need it for very long at all. Reporter you were on Board Air Force one multiple times. Are you concerned about your own exposure . I am concerned, but the cdc says there are caveats for certain employees. As long as you continue to test negative, you remain symptom free, and you keep a mask on when youre out and about, which we do inside the hospital 24 7, then you can carry on your duties. Reporter the president is an impatient man. Has he been itchy to get out of here . The president has been a phenomenal patient during his stay here, and hes been working hand in glove with us and the team, and today got to the point hes Holding Court with those of us around him, the whole team, going over all the specifics. The testing, what the future is, and we have been back and forth on whats safe and whats reasonable, and he has never once pushed us to do anything that was beyond safe and reasonable practice that we all first wanted. Reporter is there anyone on this medical team who did not want him to leave here and go back to the white house today . Or any other staffers . No. Reporter the president said dont be afraid of covid. Should we believe that . Should we be afraid . Im not going to get into that. Reporter you said his kidneys were normal and improving. Were there any effects . Whats up with that . Its all normal right now. I would say he appeared to be a little did ehydrated friday. He was able to drink and recover from that. Yeah, everything looks great. Reporter before he resumes campaigning across the country, what should he be doing . We have to make sure there is no evidence of live virus present that he could possibly transmit to others. Thats what the Infectious Disease experts and some of our partners, military and civilian entities, are doing some of these advanced diagnostics to see as soon as we could identify that. Routinely we talk about a tenday window, but were checking them that its earlier than that, theres a chance that its a little bit later, but we will know as soon as possible. Then we will look at him clinical. How you seeing, how you doing . Why did you not administer hydroxychloroquine in the time he was there . Im not going into debates about specific medicines or therapies. There were a dozen therapies that we were made aware of that we discussed and debated and looked at the existing literature on, and this is the regimen we chose. Reporter is he having some of the muscle aches, has he lost his sense of taste and smell . No, we were just talking about that, what symptoms he has left. Even the slight cough he used to have he doesnt really complain of at all. He doesnt really complain of muscle aches. Hes up and back to his old self, predominantly. Just to be clear, how long will he still be actively shedding the virus. This morning, i believe, there was even an accounting by dr. Fauci referencing the first five days of illness that people are most likely to shed life virus. Theres a reason the ten days becaudays, they put in ten just in case. Its never 100 for everybody. We look at that window. Reporter shouldnt he be confined to his residence, or will he be allowed to return to the oval office . Were going to do whatever it takes for the president to do what he can from the white house. Reporter has he been on any other medications . I want to point out, he has not been on any feverreducing medications for the last 24 hours. Reporter what medicines is he on . Im not going to go into specifics, but he is on a covidrelated medicine. Reporter knowing when the president s last covid test was is important, using the words you said, and also for the Contact Tracing. Would you have recommended that given his symptoms the president go to a bedminster fundraiser . Its not up to me, necessarily, the president s schedule, but i would say it has been talked about, whats going on. Reporter what if what were his symptoms on thursday . Im not getting into that. What were his viral loads . Im not talking about the viral loads. We had diagnostics that would tell when it was safe to get out and be around people. Reporter were any of his lab tests abnormal . Again, hipaa prevents me from going into too many things on that. At some future point, maybe, but today, sorry. I think thats it. Yeah. Thank you, guys. Youve been listening to President Trumps medical team at Walter Reed Medical Center giving an update, or something of an update on his condition as the president continues to battle coronavirus. The president s physician there, commander sean conley, was confirming that the president will, as the president announced on twitter, be released from the hospital, though conley said President Trump is, quote, not entirely out of the woods yet and will continue to receive, quote, world class medical care 24 7. The medical team saying that President Trump has not had a fever in 72 hours, will receive another dose of recommemdesivir before being discharged. Dr. Conley refused to answer basic questions about the president s health, including about his lung scans, when the president first took a negative test, on and on and on. Sanjay gupta joins me again. Sanjay, first of all, what i got from that press conference, such as it was, was that commander conley was wanting to share information that he thought reflected well on the president s health and refused to give any information that he thought would reflect poorly. When confronts about his condition, how would he be safely esconced, quarantined, the doctor said he wouldnt go into that. He wouldnt go into specifics about what he is or is not on. Are you confident that the president should be discharged . I dont think we have the information here about the basic things. Does the president have pneumonia . Dont have an answer to that. The president needed oxygen. How significant was the impact on his lungs . Dont know the answer to that. We know hes going to continue to get these medications as well as remdesivir. I get it that there is a medical unit in the hospital, but thats why he went to walter reed in the first place, to receive the drugs. Why the change here . If hes on blood thinners, we know that people can develop blood clots and thats why blood thinners could potentially be important. He said hes not going to get sbul our r daush it makes you fully convinced theyre not revealing everything here. Why is that . Someone asked about his cardiac, kidney and liver function, again, sort of a nonanswer answer. I noticed, for example, the medications they gave no longer included his staten medication. Can that have an interaction with the liver . This level of detail is not for giggles, its really important in terms of determining what would happen next. Most important thing, jake, which you mentioned in the beginning, hes not out of the woods. Yeah. Dr. Conley himself said before day 7 through 10 are kind of the most critical days, and we havent gotten to that point, so why discharge him just as hes getting in this condition. Because of hipaa, its why people cannot call the hospital to ask how an average citizen is doing. Doctors and nurses are not allowed to give that medication. Ive never heard a president s physician invoke hipaa regulations. Ive never heard that. I also dont know if its part of hipaa, why can he tell us the basic things that dont run afoul of hipaa regulations, but things that would suggest that he would not be as good as he would appear, thats covered by hipaa regulations. That doesnt make sense. No, it doesnt. Its very selective and the things they invoked hipaa for is very sketchy details. This is a respiratory virus, and we still dont have a clear idea, after the president has been in the hospital over the weekend, what shape his lungs are in. We know there is a concern given he dropped his blood oxygenat n oxygenation. Thats significant that you drop your blood oxygenation and need significant oxygen. There are two points, jake, that i think are going to be really critical. You already raised the steroids. We talked about that in the press conference. I worry thats a mask of whats going on here. I subscribed lots of patients, reduced the inflammation. Sometimes you want it to reduce so the patient can recover. The viral load is still there and still needs to be treated. As you wean the steroids, the viral load may start to increase again, and thats why you want him in the hospital. For hospitalized patients, jake, long hauler sort of symptoms. These persistent symptoms of fatigue, headache, shortness of breath, whatever they may be. Mentally some do have these long hauler symptoms. How are those going to be addressed . This just seems very shortsighted. Again, if he were any other patient, leaving aside hes the president , you probably would have kept him in the hospital longer to address these very important points. There are other things dr. Conley said that were a little odd. When asked about whether the president is taking these very serious medications and there are medication, you need to be in the hospital, sthir serioyou serious about these medications. Are they sending patients home with these medications . No, theyre not sending medications home with these patients, certainly not for covid. Remdesivir has been around for a while, but with covid its a new medication. Kbo combining it with antibodies, combining it with the steroids, we dont know what all the cross interactions will be. Remdesivir helps cut down on viral activity. So now you have counteracting forces. Hes getting both those medications at the same time. Im not saying that plan is wrong, but the idea of doing it outside a clinical setting, outside a hospital in something there is very little data on, we dont know the reaction of antimo antimonochromal antibodies. The president may be on a regimen that very few people in the world have been on in the last few days. Thats why you want to observe this. The steroids can cloud peoples judgment, can make people aggressive, can cause all sorts of side effects, make them restless, hungry, unable to sleep. There is significant issues with this medication. It can also make you feel great. People feel better on steroids but theyve taken care of the inflammation. What dr. Conley said, the president is not taking fever reducers. Would the steroid be a fever reduce reducer in any way. Yeah, it could. And i think hes also on an aspirin, i believe. Its not that hes on cases to reduce fever. Its good information but its not complete, because we dont have the complete picture of how high did his fever go . How did it bring the fever down . Do we have evidence of just how significant this insflamgs in his body. The questions i brought up are ones that have easy answers and probably they know. Hopefully they know. Im sure he got good care, but theyre definitely not sharing. Once you share, are they saying anything at this point. Theyve been hiding a lot of these facts since last week. Sanjay, please stand by. I want to go to Caitlyn Collins at the white house. The president is anxious to leave Walter Reed Medical Center for a tup he wicouple of reason. He wants to pose a strong figure. They didnt say what that kind of quarantine will look like in the white house. No, they didnt. They said, can the president go in the west wing or anywhere in the white house . The doctor did not answer that question. Theyll help him, would they please have aides coming into the residence, it still has questions of what theyre able to do. You psalm them you saw them talking about this, and the president has been wanting to get away. We will need to see if he stays in the residence the next seven days. That question of when the president s last negative test was really goes to the heart of what the white house has been claiming for months, that they have been testing the president every day. If not, he tested last thursday and it was a negative result. Four hours later, he tested positive. One of the other things that raised eyebrows, they admitted that he did not have service ds. I believe thats a generous number there after they learned that hope hicks had tested positive. Yet his own physician admitted they did not think to test the president right away, and instead asked him hours later how the president was feeling. That is not the doctors job, and its got to raise questions about that, because anyone else who would have come in contact with someone immediately would have started taking those precautio precautions. They did not do that. By the way, the doctor citing hipaa when he is asked certain questions, that comes from the president himself. If they were so anxious to send the president home, you have to wonder why the president would have not showed, but he is he said the push was leaving a lot of discussion. And he is a 74yearold man who is clinically obese and has preexisting conditions that could make this virus worse. Caitlyn collins, thank you very much. Joining me, gloria borger, dana bash, abby phillip. Gloria, an important point i want to underline again. These are not the president s physicians, theyre members of the United States navy. He is not just a patient, they are his commander in chief. They have to obey his orders. Dr. Conley said he never pushed his behaviorally beyond what is expected, but it steemz eems li wouldnt be different than if any of us were their patients. Absolutely, and look at the president s tweet. Dont be afraid of covid. Dont let it dominate your life. So what hes telling these doctors, i need to get out of here. I need to show that im strong. I need to show that i can beat, r who the president said he needs a warrior and thats what he sounded like. The president does not wantjustg to the white house where he gets 24hour care. If hes going to work from the president ial quarters upstairs, he can easily do that. His returning home, his not letting covid dominate his life is very different from most of us should we get covid. And more importantly, for those over 200,000 americans who have died, they didnt want covid to dominate their lives, either. Unfortunately, it did, and they did not get the kind of experimental treatment that the president is on. As sanjay was saying, he may be the only person in the world who is getting this kind of treatment that we know of. Yeah, not a lot of americans that dont have floors dedicated to them cant do that. Dana, dont be afraid of covid, dont let it dominate your life. The president has the best medical care in the world. I cant believe the number of individuals i have that believe senator trump succumb to it and end up dying . What the president said, despite the fact he is currently suffering from covid, is evenly more dangerous, because now the person wants to believe him because he has the personal experience with it. That is why, when he tweeted out, dont be afraid of covid, dont let it ruin your life, its almost impossible to believe hes gotten the best medical care by the way, hes president of the United States, he should get the best medical care, but keep that into context, mr. President , when you say things like what you said. Gloria is speaking to sources. I spoke to a source familiar with the president s calls this morning who also said this is a quote from the source i spoke to. I need to get out of here. Hes obviously been itching to do so. And the recommendation he has been getting on the politics of this, jake, not the med, but the positively. What would not be good is if you left and you had a relapse or things go south from what you expect right now. That is what he was getting told when he was pushing to get out on the politics of it, but he wasnt going to listen to that. Abby, this whole thing has been a debacle, not just the president s handling of this crisis, but just on the discreet question of when the president was infected, he still went to bedminster even though he had been exposed to somebody who tested positive and was showing symptoms, and this continued refusal to give the information about the president of the United States. If you dont want to share your information with the public, dont run for president , because the American People are entitled to know how healthy their president is. Theyre not sharing when his last negative test is for the coronavirus. Why not . They wont even tell us when he was last tested before they received a positive test. Mark meadows has been talking for days about the protocol they have had in place at this white house to prevent the president from getting infected to prevent the spread of the coronavirus in that organization. That protocol failed. Obviously it failed because not only did the president get infected because they cant even tell us with any kind of certainty when he tested negative last and why he isnt being tested more frequently if it is not every day. So it raises some serious questions about why they are withholding this information. And more broadly, to the question of what it would change how they would deal with this virus but how its handled from a inspirational matter from this white house. I think we know now, nothing is going to change chl. Hes going to give this message to the American People that this virus is nothing to worry about. You had the White House Press secretary yesterday briefing reporters, taking off her mask to brief reporters and then testing positive today. Lessons have not been learned, and i think that should be very clear to the American People at this point. The white houses team led by the president are now they can be faulted not only for how they dealt with this crisis but for literally spreading the virus to others. As the president is being released to the white house, the outbreak among the west wing staffers is growing. Thats horrific detail and were going to discuss that next, stay with us. We are following the shocking breaking news. The president will be released from walter reed this evening at his own insistence. But President Trumps physician says he is, quote, not entirely out of the woods yet. The president s release comes as the outbreak among those in trumps orbit continues to expand. Earlier today, White House Press secretary Kayleigh Mcenany and two of her deputies have become the latest to test positive and announce it. This particular cluster of people in President Trumps orbit now totals at least 14 infected people that we know of. Most of them are the highest levels of american government. Mcenany was briefing reporters without wearing a mask yesterday. Continuing to defy not only Health Guidelines but basic common sense and consideration. In fighting this pandemic and keeping it from spreading to others. Despite the evidence that the white house seems to have been a potential virus hot zone, astoundingly, Vice President pence, a heartbeat away from the presidency, is not quarantining. Pence seen here surrounded by multiple people who have since announced that they are infected, is traveling across the country today, forging ahead with the plan to debate senator Kamala Harris on wednesday. And frankly, a stunning move given the questions over whether the president may have to turn over power temporarily to pence if this infection worsens. Vice president pence tested negative so far but so had Kayleigh Mcenany until she tested positive. The white house, Supreme Court announcement ceremony held indoors and out, seems to have been a super spreader event marked by recklessness. No masks required, no distancing, constantly crowded events, downplaying of the virus from the very top. In february, Kayleigh Mcenany said, quote, we will not see diseases like the coronavirus come here because of President Trump. It turns out that lying about the virus is not an effective protection from it. Joining me now to discuss all of this, director of the Infectious Disease division at alabama birmingham and former cdc disease detective dr. Yasmeen, the Trump Medical Team said there is some Contact Tracing being done but gave no other information. What should the white house be doing right now . Weve heard of so many people from journalists who were infected on air force one to the governor of ohio. He said nobody reached out to him to do Contact Tracing, even though President Trump and his team were in ohio on tuesday for the debate. What should they be doing right now . They should be communicating with full openness, honesty and transparency, jake. There is an epidemiologist from the cdc whos been detailed to the white house. My concern is, how can that individual do their job in an environment where the truth is not being told, and learning from New York Times reporters today, on the third floor who dont have contact with the first family testing positive today but not only that, told to exert discretion in terms of who they discuss positive diagnosis is. Does that not include revealing information to Public Health investigators . As someone whos done Contact Tracing, your job becomes impossible when people dont share the truth with you, decide to be honest with you a few days later because then youre just not able to reach out to every Single Person who was exposed. As you mentioned, there are all of these what look like super spreading events including at the white house, fundraisers and rallies in new jersey and other places, there are people there close to the president who are now telling us theyre shocked no one had contacted them. That they were really surprised someone hasnt followed up because of the level of exposure they had and i did some sleuthing and had a look at floor plans for the white house and took a look at some of the airconditioning plans that are available. Its a much more intimate and cramped place than many would realize, especially in terms of people who work closely together and now it seems like we werent given the full truth. Being told everyone who works in the white house, everyone in the president s circle is of course getting these quick turnaround daily tests. Are they . Are they choosing to have those tests . Why are we learning so late about these diagnoses . These press conferences were useless to me, to be honest. Such little information. What you think might be a small cluster end up spiraling out of control when you cant do your job as a Public Health investigator early on. I want to get your take on the press conference from commander conley in a second, but i want to look forward for one minute because we have a Vice President ial debate coming up on wednesday. Vice president pence is not quarantining, despite the fact he was clearly around and close with multiple people who have since tested positive. If you were advising senator harris, senator Kamala Harris, is it safe for her to even debate pence indoors in the same room on wednesday . Jake, its the right question to ask and technically, if you follow the rules, he should be quarantine and should not be around anyone including Kamala Harris. So absolutely, i would tell her no. I think his failure to follow the most basic Public Health guidance is just one angle of the debacle that this very disheartening event has put those of who feel like weve been yelling into the void now for six months, when you look at the footage from the event for the Supreme Court nominee, i dont think ive ever watched anything that made me feel more disheartened for that as a physician and someone whos been trying so hard with so many of my colleagues to beg people to do the right thing and also having seen so many people do the right thing, and knowing that this group of privileged people just completely continued to defy all that weve been saying. The rules are for the little people, i guess, not for the likes of us. Doctor, i know you wanted to weigh in on what you heard or did not hear from conley who say, i prefer to look forward, not backward. Is that even something doctors say . He was asked about when the president last tested negative and said id like to look forward. Thats spin doctoring. Not emergency medicine. I would not use these videos for role models for medical students. Sanjay did a great job of covering that in the discussion previously, but this selective use of hipaa is really unethical, frankly, when youre talking about communications around the president s health. Yes, every single patient deserves quality and confidential care. There is a right to privacy, but we are talking about someone who has just been put on not only an experimental medication, but also a strong antiviral medication and also steroids, which as dr. Gupta noted, you cause significant side effects in a very high number of people. That does include loss of sleep, mania, irritation. It includes increased appetite. So if he was just put on steroids very recently in the setting of all of this concern, i think you would really want to be able to tell us a lot more. The other thing that the dr. Conley noted was he wouldnt tell us about his lab results. And he mentioned he was dehydrated on friday which made me wonder if he had some kidney dysfunction on friday and they were just explaining it away because he was dehydrated because of the virus. The last thing ill mention is that they didnt come out and say he wasnt being anticoagulated, meaning he wasnt put on blood thinners and thats a very critical thing because if he was sick enough to be put on blood thinners, then that is definitely not somebody you want to be managing outside of a true tertiary care setting. Its just stunning. Dr. Seema yasmin, always good to have you on. Thank you so much. Thank you, jake, take care. This is cnn breaking news. And welcome to our second hour of the lead. Im jake tapper. We continue with major breaking news. President trump set to be released from Walter Reed Medical Center at his own insistence. He will now recover at the white house. We heard from the president s doctors who acknowledged that President Trump is not entirely out of the woods yet. They say they will be closely tracking his condition through the weekend. We all remain cautiously optimistic and on guard because were in a bit of unchartered territory when it comes to a patient that received the therapies he has so early in the course. He may not be entirely out of the woods yet. The team and i agree all of our evaluations and most importantly, his clinical
