Friends . Why do they have to stay in the cooler temperatures force more people to spend more time house . Indoors. Now despite this bad news, how do you explain this to them to help them better deal with President Trump continues to say it . I think its really about that he is handling the pandemic focusing not on what we cant do well. Compared to whom . But saying we are helping others by staying home. This is the death rate in e. U. We are keeping teachers safe by in blue. Thats the United States in not opening schools. Orange. The e. U. Has 100 million more we are doing our part to keep our neighbors healthy by not going around and having big people than the United States. Parties. Thats the type of thing that but their death rate is half. Children can relate to more so the virus is not contained in than just heres what were not the United States. Testing is not available for most americans. Doing. But i think helping them label millions of children in this country cannot go to school. The feelings is so important. Millions of americans remain encouraging them to say this is hard, i do feel sad. Unemployed because of the that helps them understand that pandemic. The current plan is not working. Actually talking about their feelings can be healing, which is a life lesson thats pretty dr. Fauci also gave a striking important during this time. And what are some ways you reality check for people who think a vaccine will mean a advise parents to help make return to normal. Fauci says that even if a their kids feel like normal vaccine is ready by the end of this year, and thats a big if, social children . Yeah. He does not think the world can its all about as much routine return to the same levels of and controllability and predictability as you can build normalcy as precoronavirus until in. So, maybe youre going to have a the middle or end of next year. Virtual lunch with the same kids a few times a week. Cnns nick watt kicks off our maybe youre going to have a coverage today. Ritual at the end of a friday where the family makes a special reporter President Trump is dinner. Maybe youre going to have a zoom call or a book club with a still ignoring the facts and couple of your friends that is playing down the pandemic. Ritualized, its going to happen, we can predict it, we were rounding the turn. Can control it. You see the numbers are or youre going to think outside the box for other ways for your plunging. I have to disagree with that kids to get that social time. Because we are plateauing at the point is to build something around 40,000 cases a day. In so that it actually becomes part of the routine rather than and the deaths are around a always feeling like you have to thousand. Reporter and 30 states are start from scratch. Because starting from scratch is seeing more than 5 of tests just so mentally taxing. Coming back positive. Obviously weve seen these thats still too high. Studies and heard anecdotally in remember, the 1918 flu pandemic increases about suicidal ideation, depression, alcohol surged again when it got cold and drug abuse by kids during and killed many, many more this horrific time. People. So could this. I just think we need to hunker down and get through this between those obvious horrible signs that need to be acted on fall and winter. Because its not going to be and more normal reactions to easy. Whats going on, crying, anger, reporter the president also still ignoring the cdcs et cetera, what are some warning signs in between that parents suggestions, very few masks at and caretakers should be aware his maga rally in michigan last of . Sometimes it really is a night. Matter of degree. But if your child is really it just deeply puzzles me, expressing a lot of hopelessness how did we get here . Imagine you were an alien who or some significant changes in landed on planet earth. Sleeping or eating or if they when you went around you saw seem even more isolated, theres some people wearing them and no attempt, theres no effort, some people not wearing them. Theres no motivation to get in and it turned out it was their political party. Contact with friends, those are and you would scratch your head all really concerning signs that and think this is just not a planet that has much promise for should be talked about. The future. Expressing feelings is good, but im not afraid. Sometimes kids get quieter. The good lord takes care of me. And when they stop talking about whats going on, thats when you if i die, i die. See some problems. Also too, listening to teachers reporter the older you are, the more likely you are to die. The cdc now says 0. 003 of who say your kid fell off the grid, thats important to know. Best of luck to you and your infected under 18s are dying. But that climbs to a sobering three kids as you deal with this pandemic. Be sure to tune into cnns state of the union on sunday. Out an answer to normal, limited until then, you can follow me on facebook, instagram, twitter. You can tweet the show. Indoor dining now allowed in orange county, california. Our coverage on cnn continues bars across florida can open right now. Half Capacity Starting monday. And some fans in the stands at last nights nfl Season Opener this is cnn breaking news. In kansas city. Welcome to our viewers here if youre talking about in the United States and around getting back to a degree of the world. Im wolf blitzer in the situation room. Were marking a somber normality which resembles where anniversary this evening. We were prior to covid, its 19 years since the attacks on going to be well into 2021, september 11th, 2001. As we remember the nearly 3,000 maybe even towards the end of 2021. Americans who died on that day, now, we have just heard that were also tracking the growing death toll from another national miami, which was a hot spot at crisis, the coronavirus pandemic. The virus has now claimed more one point, is going to move into than 192,000 lives here in the phase two reopening monday. And that opens the door to United States. Inperson teaching in schools. And more than the governor of florida said today that current data just doesnt support the idea that kids can fuel secondary infections. But today we also heard from some researchers in utah who say that 12 kids who caught covid in Daycare Centers passed the virus onto at least a dozen other people. Two of those kids showed no symptoms whatsoever. And still infected other people. Jake . All right, nick, thank you so much. Lets bring in cnns chief medical correspondent dr. Sanjay gupta. And, sanjay, you just spoke with the head of operation warp speed. Thats the white house effort to find a coronavirus vaccine. What did he have to tell you . Well, we wanted to sort of really talk about two things around the likelihood of this vaccine being available, you want to know if its effective and you want to know if its safe. So those are the two points we really hit october heres what he said specifically about the idea we would have an effective vaccine within the next few months. If we can make it in advance prior to the election day, we will. And if we can make them in advance after the collection day. Its very unlikely that that number happens in october. Its more likely that it happens in november. Its even more likely that it happens in december. You get an idea of what hes talking about there. Two groups in, half people get the vaccine, half people get the placebo, is there enough of a difference in infection rate between the two groups to say, yes, this is definitively working. He said most likely that would be in december, maybe earlier. The second big question, jake is safety. They say that they want to wait for the phase three trials to be done before they determine whether they would approve this or authorize it. But what does that mean . When is the trial actually done . Looking to the databases of the fda on the overwhelming majority of adverse event associated with vaccine happen within the first i was told 42 days after completing the immunization regiment and maybe two months after completing. It doesnt mean things may not happen way after. They could. Extremely rare. So, jake, what hes saying there is that even for people who are enrolling right now, you remember you get a shot, you wait a month, you get another shot. Hes saying 42 days to two months after that is probably where theyre going to be looking for initial safety concerns. That puts that really into sort of midlate november at the earliest to get that kind of data back. So, sanjay, you have three girls doing remote education. I have two kids doing the same. Let me just raise something with you that really bothers me. The idea that our kids cant go to School Safely because they cant get tested. A friend of mine has a son at northeastern university. And i believe this is correct that that school requires all students to get tested every 72 hours, every three days. If you dont get tested, then you lose access to campus, et cetera. Why cant i get that northeastern is a school with an endowment and money and whatever. But why cant our government have that happen for our Public Schools and private schools for our kids so that there is testing so that they get tested every three days, and we know that theyre safe. Why not . Yeah. Look, jake, the answer to that question is they absolutely couldve done this. To be clear, there could have been an operation warp speed for testing like weve just been talking about for the vaccine. And i dont think im exaggerating or describing a fantasy land when you say its possible we could have had athome testing at this point where you could test yourself at home, even on a daily basis like in the morning when youre brushing your teeth. You could do a test like that, comes back positive, you stay home. You keep taking the test until it comes back negative and you can go out again. That could have been possible because there were tests that were authorized back in may, antigen tests. We didnt really invest in this. We could have really ramped up manufacturing around those types of tests and invoked the defense production act. But i got to tell you, and i understand your frustration because i share it. I think it was a conscious decision not to do that. I interviewed the admiral giroir yesterday, the testings are for the country. He said he recognized the importance but its still probably going to be close to the end of the year when we have that level of Testing Available in this country. Its not only safer for our kids, its safer for the teachers and the faculty. And you could do it at businesses too. It wouldve saved money. The economy has been crippled because of this. Its so frustrating of the sanjay, a new study from the centers for Disease Control prevention shows that adults who tested positive for coronavirus were about twice as likely to have reported dining at a restaurant. If doesnt specify if they dined indoors or outdoors. Dr. Fauci also just addressed the study. Take a listen. So if we want to get back to the normal existence of being able to enjoy being in a restaurant, the best way to do that is to get the Community Level of infection at the lowest level possible. He seems to be suggesting were doing this bass ackwards, the idea that people are going to restaurants and getting this disease. We should clamp down on the disease before we open the restaurants. Texas, miami allowing 50 indoor. Is it safe indoor eating . I think its very hard to justify it is safe. First of all, there are criteria by which states restaurants can open. But there are criteria. Two phases of going down wards for 14 days, having enough testing, low positivity rate, all the things that weve talked about. The problem with indoor dining, as you can probably guess, first of all, indoors is going to be far worse than outdoors. But you cant keep a mask on. Thats basically it. You can try and do lower sort of occupancy. It depends how large the space is. Ive talked to several restauranteurs. Theyre trying their best. Many people call me and say were doing the best we can do. The problem is youre dealing with a contagious virus inside transferring among people on surfaces maybe even with people who cant wear a mask because theyre eating and drinking. Fauci also said that even if a vaccine is ready by the end of this year, we may not be able to get back to anything even remotely resembling normalcy till the end of 2021. This is about how quickly this rolls out. Going back to my conversation with the head of operation warp speed, maybe a few doses available in the next few months. Maybe tens of millions by the end of the year. Were talking 200, 300 Million People to get to that 60, 70 of the country being vaccinated. The fda is going to accept a 50 efficacy of the vaccine. If it works 50 , they may authorize this. Well, that may mean that even if we get vaccinated, there are still going to be a lot of people who need to wear masks and keep physical distance. I know this remote education thing sucks. You too, jake. Have a good weekend. It seems like pesident trump never met a scare tactic he did not like until covid came around. How his reason for downplaying the virus goes against what he has clearly been doing for more than four years. Plus, america burning. Raging fires burning up and down the west coast. Today we remember the nearly 3,000 people who were killed during the 9 11 terrorist attacks. At a time when more than 190,000 americans have lost their lives to coronavirus. It is a time of trauma. In our politics lead, President Trump is still defending his decision to downplay the virus to project calm, ignoring the experts he told a packed largely maskless crowd that the virus is now coming to an end. Thats not true. Leaving some Trump Supporters indifferent to the threat, as cnns Jeremy Diamond now reports. Reporter after a moment of silence on air force one, today President Trump commemorating the 19th anniversary of 9 11 in shanksville, pennsylvania. [ bell tolls ] 19 years ago on this day at this very hour on this field, 40 brave men and women triumph over terror and gave their lives in defense of our nation. 9 11 well never forget. Reporter as trump honored the heroes of flight 93, Vice President mike pence marked the moment at the World Trade Center memorial, alongside joe biden, the democratic president ial nominee. A brief reprieve from a campaign roiled by trumps damning admission to Journalist Bob Woodward that he intentionally misled americans about the coronavirus. I wanted to always play it down. I still like playing it down because i dont want to create a panic. Reporter and his false defense. Why did you lie to the American People, and why should we trust what you have to say now . Thats a terrible question in the phraseology. I didnt lie. What i said is we have to be calm. We cant be panicked. There were times when i was out there telling the American Public how difficult this is, how were having a really serious problem. And the president was saying its something thats going to disappear, which obviously is not the case. When you downplay something that is really a threat thats not a good thing. Reporter trump now comparing himself to former british Prime Minister Winston Churchill. When hitler was bombing london, churchill, great leader, would often times go to a roof in london and speak. And he always spoke with calmness. Reporter but thats not true. Churchill didnt sugar coat the truth. We have before us an ordeal of the most grievous time. We have before us many, many long months of struggle and of suffering. Reporter trump is still spewing coronavirus misinformation. Were rounding the turn. You see whats happening. You see the numbers are plunging. Reporter dismissing the reality of 35,000 cases per day over 800 daily deaths and warnings about a potentially deadly fall and winter. All while addressing a crowd of thousands who mostly refuse to wear masks. Im not afraid. The good lord takes care of me. If i die, i die. We got to get this country moving. What are you going to do, wear masks and stay inside for another year . Where will that get us . Reporter and, jake, today, President Trump also announcing that the u. S. Has brokered an agreement between the state of israel and the kingdom of bahrain to normalize diplomatic relations. This is only the fourth arab country to normalize relations with israel. All three countries are expected to join or leaders from the three countries are execed to join President Trump at the white house next week to sign the agreement. Thats great news on the two peace agreements. Here to discuss cnns laura lopez and abby phillip. President trump says he wanted to downplay the virus because he didnt want the American People to panic. But, frankly, he tries to invoke panic all the time to motivate his base. Yesterday he tweeted, quote, if i dont win, americas suburbs will be overrun with lowincome projects, anarchists, agitators and looters. His whole argument is panic. Exactly. And if you listened to even his speech last night, he was sounding the same basic tune warning that the suburbs are going to be overrun by anarchists, there are going to be murderers all over the country. This is not a president who shy as way from turning up the temperature on his rhetoric. These were warnings that really couldve saved lives. I think watching jim acostas interviews with those Trump Supporters at the rally really vividly illustrates the consequences of the president continuing to refuse to explain to the American People and level with them about what the threat is and what they can do to protect themselves. Yeah. Im going to get to that in one second. But first let me ask laura. So trump invoked win stop churchill and fdr during his rally last night suggesting that like them during world war ii he was trying to avoid public panic during a time of crisis. But anyone that has read any history of world war ii knows that thats not what fdr and Winston Churchill did. Right. As jeremy laid out in his report, what trump claimed has no does not match up with the facts at all, jake. And so churchill said there would be months of suffering. Americans were asked to sacrifice during World War Two and were asked to ration. And fdr made very clear the threats that were posed to the country. By contrast, trump from the beginning of the pandemic has said that the virus would disappear or has said that it isnt as dangerous as the common flu, often contradicting dr. Fauci, head of nih. And so from the very beginning, he has repeatedly said that this is not that dangerous, that the summer months would mean that it disappeared. Were now about to enter fall. The pandemic is still very present. And cdc officials, former cdc officials that ive spoken to throughout the pandemic have said how significant and critical it is when government leaders express empathy and actually level with citizens about what they need them to do in order to help during a pandemic like this to help it pass and to get past it. So, abby, Health Officials i speak to say there are two things that we need to be doing right now. One is Everybody Needs to be Wearing Masks when they are near somebody else other than obviously in their family. And, two, is testing overwhelmingly. You talked about the messages that trumps rallygoers are getting from him. Jim acosta interviewed some of them last night. Lets roll some of those and i want to get your reaction. Why are you not wearing a mask . Because theres no covid. Its a fake pandemic created to destroy the United States of america. But the president said to bob woodward that there is a virus, the coronavirus, and that it is deadly. Thats his opinion. The truth is that the cdc said only less than 10,000 people die from covid. I mean, again, i could do an hour just factchecking that one guy. The cdc does not say theres been fewer than 10,000 people who have died from covid. This is a number thats been taken out of conflext floated by conspiracy theories who believe that on a medical chart, for instance, if you had any comorbidity. Lets say that you had asthma and then you died of covid. But beyond that, to hear this trump supporter say its fake and then repeat these debunked conspiracy theories. There was a whole bunch of people like that that acosta talked to. What was your reaction, abby . Its really disturbing on a lot of different levels. This ecosystem of disinformation, not just around covid but particularly around covid that is so dangerous. People are taking in information about this is supconspiracy theories. You heard that person talk about how coronavirus was designed to destroy the United States. That seems to be sort of coming right out of the kind of rhetoric that paints this as some sort of primarily as some kind of intentional attack by china to weaken the United States. Now, there is no question that there has got to be a lot of scrutiny on china for its role in this virus spreading globally. But at the same time, that does not change the fact that it is here in the United States. And its a real risk. Look, i do think that the president at this point has lost control of this message. He cannot roll this back. And thats what youre seeing in those clips. Weve seen, by the way, conspiracy theorist after conspiracy theorist die from covid. Theres a whole trail of them. Laura, yesterday trump listed off all the now and fox business that he watched on wednesday, the Biden Campaign was quick to point out that that meant that the president had watched 480 hours of television while more americans were dying of covid. I wonder how effective an attack you think it is though. Well, all the polls that weve seen this week and last week, jake, show that coronavirus is still very top of mind for voters and that when theyre asked who they trust to handle the pandemic the most, biden in a number of polls leads by double digits. So that suggests that this is something that is top of mind for them. Also the impact of the pandemic on the economy is top of mind for them when theyre thinking about who theyre going to vote for in this election. And a lot of what bidens campaign has been focusing on is that very detail. Theyre talking about the economy a lot. They are talking about the virus a lot. And by contrast, trump in a lot of his ads is very much focused on socalled rioting on crime on this law and order message that is based on fallacies. Or a panic ad. Thanks to both of you. In our world lead today, the president bragging about a secret previously secret new Nuclear Weapons system in the new bob woodward book telling the journalist, quote, i have built an earlier weapons system that nobody has had. Putin and xi have never heard about before. What we have is incredible. Lets bring in mike rogers and former dhs assistant secretary. Juliet, let me start with you. Your reaction to the president bragging about this classified weapons system to a journalist knowing hes on the record. Woodward found out that its true, there is a secret weapons system they were surprised that the president had told him about it. Yeah. I see this as impacting sort of three audiences. First is of course our enemies who now know that there is some new system. As you said, woodward validated that there is some new system, which may be inconsistent with treaty obligations, legal obligations or even statements made between all the leaders. The second is our allies. This is what is so frustrating about Donald Trumps mouth, among other things, which is our allies see this as well. Why the heck would they share anything with us at this stage . And to the extent that the threats that we face in particular, election interference, radicalization, the sort of borderless threat, it is a cue to them as well that we have talking from the top. And this has been consistent since day one. Then the third audience i think that we should forget is us. We have a carelessness about this president amongst all other things that we can describe about him about intelligence. And i think that impacts whether we believe it, whether its accurate, or whether hes just not boasting all the time to a reporter who he clearly just wanted to impress. Chairman rogers, i want you to listen to what joe biden had to say to me when i asked him about these revelations, in part. Take a listen. You wonder why people in the Intelligence Community wondered from the beginning whether you can share data with him. Because they dont trust him. They dont trust what hell say or do. He seems to have no conception. He seems to have no conception what constitutes national security. No conception of anything other than what can you do to promote himself. What do you think . Is that fair . You know, i think it is fair. There are a couple of problems with this. One, that the president talked about it to a reporter, which was likely a very highly classified program. Number one. Number two, the reporter was able to confirm that it was real with another source. Thats a whole other set of problems and i think kind of breeds the very fact that theres problems over there. And heres why we have secrets. You disclose when you want to deter your enemy. You keep classified when you want to maintain an advantage against an adversary or an enemy. And i just dont think the president understands the value of either one of those propositions. And thats what concerns me the most. And as a former intel guy, an fbi guy, what the counterintelligence folks will do, our adversarys Intelligence Services will start taking that bit of information and go back and try to figure out where does the program is housed. Theyll go through a whole list of things like how do we learn more about this program and how do we target americans to recruit . It gives a piece of a puzzle that is that should not be disclosed. Its maddening to me. I want to ask you, juliet. So nora dannahe was a top aid in the office of john durham who is doing this investigation that bill barr assigned to look into the russia investigation holding obamaera intel folks accountable. Shes resigned from the probe which says that she resigned in part because the team, in her view, was being pushed to release a report before its ready due to political pressure from attorney general barr. I dont know much about her but i know shes a highly respected career prosecutor. What do you think of all this . I think its a story to the extent that durhams story is going to be a story. So i got a text from a friend of mine who says shes sort of like fiona hill. All these women sort of step forward to at least expose what is going on in these investigations. The week started with the chief of staff mark meadows talking about a pending case that he knew information. I think the durham case is sufficiently known by the media at least and the public thats paying attention that it is tainted. But i think it goes back to the same theme that im sort of thinking a lot about because its the anniversary of 9 11 which is sort of malfeasance when it comes to intelligence, whether its not disclosing how bad covid is or what kind of threats the United States faces from russia or china during the election. And now about focusing on the Obama Administration rather than russia. Its sort of a malfeasance about intelligence at this stage. And chairman rogers, speaking of russia, the u. S. Treasury is now sanctioning a ukrainian lawmaker who has ties to trumps personal attorney general rudy giuliani. The u. S. Treasury department saying that this ukrainian is a russian spy and this is somebody giuliani met with just this year, is working with to push this antibiden material. How concerning do you find this . Well, as i have said many times, you cant swing a ring of sausages in ukraine without hitting somebody whos affiliated with the russian intelligence service. It is just an inteledup all over that place. And it has been for years. And so im suspect of anybody who naively goes to deal with anyone in ukraine at any level with government or otherwise that wouldnt go in with their eyes wide open. So, yeah, its concerning. And you can understand that people who are in business might not make that mistake. But people who have access to classified information and understand how it works should not make those kinds of mistakes. Chairman mike rogers, juliet, thank you so much to both of you.
