Expected to descend this weekend on sturgis, south dakota, a town of about 7,000, for the 80th annual sturgis motorcycle rally. One rallygoer say masks impede his freedom. I dont mean to make light of it but i mean to be serious about it. These are freedomloving people and they are not going to give that up. Reporter 70,000 lives could be saved by december if masks are worn. Experts saying its so easy. Its rare that you see something so simple, so inexpensive, so easy for everybody to participate. I want to take you back to sturgis, north dakota, because we are now hearing information the mayor saying he was disappointed that that rally still going on there, bringing some 250,000 people they believe who will descend there for the weekend. Were also hearing that the Hospital System there is adding a bunch of beds, 172 coronavirus beds just in case as well as 1,300 tests in case people are asymptomatic, but worry after it is over, that they need to get tested just in case. Pam . All right, sara sidner, thanks so much for that report. And lets discuss with cnns chief medical correspondent dr. Sanjay gupta. Sanjay, i want to talk about what we just heard from sara sidner. This motorcycle rally, thousands of people are expected to come, 250,000. You heard the person in her piece there saying im not going to wear a mask, i love my freedom too much, were freedomloving people. But, essentially, the science shows that if you dont wear a mask, you could essentially kill someone because you could pass the virus to someone else. And if that person doesnt die from it, someone else could that they pass it to. Is that not what were dealing with here . Is that not what the science shows . Yeah. Were dealing with a very contagious potentially lethal virus. Pamela, thats been the one constant in all of this. That hasnt changed since the beginning. Weve obviously learned more specifics about who is most vulnerable and how better to treat these infections. But, yes, and the flip side of that, i think to your point, pamela, is that as scary as this virus is, it is fairly easily contained by a mask. You cant always say that about some of these pathogens. They can be very infectious even with a mask on. So this one is fairly easily contained by a mask. Look, outdoors is better than indoors exponentially. Some say maybe 18 times less likely to transmit if youre outdoors versus indoors. But if youre closely clustered and youre closely clustered for long periods of time, you can still transmit the virus. Its an easy thing to do. Youre not doing it for yourself, youre doing it for the people around you. Thats the point here. They say, look, im not going to wear it because i want to protect my personal freedom and i dont want to wear a mask. But then essentially you could be taking someone elses freedom away by killing them with this virus. Thats sort of whats at stake here. And i just want to look at can i just say we talked about this yesterday, pamela. And i thought it was such an important point. You asked me the question yesterday. What does ultimately inspire people . I dont know the answer to that. I feel like in my entire medical career, you are trying to get patients to do the right thing. In this case i think it really is a question of inspiring empathy in people. Maybe that works, maybe it doesnt. But youre going to go home to your families. Youre going to spend time with the people you love. Do you really want to infect them, potentially infect them . Youre not going to have to wear a mask forever. But if you do it now, youre much more likely to keep them safe. And the hard thing is unless someones directly impacted, its, like, oh, its over there. Thats over there. You hear the numbers and its like people dont really, it seems like some people dont want to take it as seriously unless theyre directly impacted. I guess when you look at the big picture here, sanjay, to your point about empathy, dr. Fauci has made it clear. In order to contain this virus or control this virus, we all have to come together. We all have to come together and follow these mitigation steps, wearing mass, social distance, and so forth. How realistic is that at this point, sanjay . And is there any end in sight if this country doesnt come together . Um, well, so, i think its very realistic first of all. We are human beings. Weve seen human beings behave in this way quite diligently. And, frankly, most places around the planet. We are a bit of an outlier in terms of not doing this at this point. Just take into account were all humans. I think it is realistic. Then you can superimpose all the things that are going on here in the United States. Dr. Fauci has been very careful here. He is not saying we need to go back into lockdown mode. In march we were able to even have this tremendous shift in human behavior. We didnt lock down fully in this country. But if you would have asked me in january that more than half the country would essentially be in lockdown by the end of march, i would have thought theres no way that could have happened, and yet we did. But now were saying we dont need to go in lockdown. The numbers have increased tremendously and clearly the numbers are getting worse. So now were saying just keep your distance, separate yourselves, wear a mask, this virus cant actually jump that far, its easily contained by a mask, it doesnt like being outside. Its not even alive, it needs a host. Dont be such a willing host. Its a short time relatively. Even on a country that prides itself on individualism as the United States does. Like you said, there is a way for the whole country to come together and follow these mitigation steps without locking down like weve seen in the past. And you mentioned the numbers. The cases are declining across most of the country. But deaths are rising in 15 states at last check. What story do the numbers tell you today about where we are in this pandemic . Yeah. We can see where the overall death rates have been increasing and what we know, pamela, is that this is whats called a lagging indicator. I hate to use that term because it sounds like a financial term. But we know that people are exposed. And then if theyre going to get sick, that usually happens a few weeks later. And if theyre sadly going to die, that happens a few weeks after that. That spike we saw weeks ago, we are now seeing the ramifications of that. Theres Something Else happening as well. The overall numbers of testing has gone down a bit. I think we have a graph to show we were going up and up and up in terms of the testing that we were doing. And it started to come down a little bit over the last few weeks. In part, thats probably due to there were some storms that may have affected that. Theres been some i. T. Issues in certain parts of the country. And theres still, you know, obviously a lot of demand for tests and not enough supplies. What i would like to see, just because ive been following this story for so long and i have talked to some sources about that this morning. We need to wait at least 14 days probably maybe even a little longer to try and figure out if we are seeing actual trends here or were seeing blips. You cant follow this day to day or even week to week. We need a little bit of a longer time frame, a little bit wider aperture to know whats really going on here. I want to get your reaction to the president. He was asked, look, were there any federal missteps . And he said, no, look at the governor, some have done a good job, some havent. But is this not a federal issue . Because it seems like if one state is struggling, no state is safe. Its absolutely a federal issue, pamela. This is not even a question anymore. We are the United States of america, and were also a mobile nation. People are moving around place to place. If you have places that are doing a good job, unfortunately, theyre still vulnerable because you have people that may come from states that are not doing as well, dont have the virus controlled as well. And you can get super spreader events. If one person is spreading to two or three, within a few cycles of that spread, tens of thousands of people can be infected. And we are seeing that happening. We need a National Plan and we need a consistent message. Im sure youre getting lots of calls, pamela. I am getting tons of calls from people saying what do we do . Schools, businesses, living life. Theyre calling me because ive been talking about this on television for a long time, and every state has a different sort of plan here. People dont know where to get tested or how long its going to take. The messaging is all over the place. So thank goodness for people like you, dr. Sanjay gupta, to bring us some of these really important answers. Thank you so much. You got it, pamela. Thank you. Top intelligence Officials Say multiple countries are attempting to interfere in the upcoming president ial election. I want to go to cnns senior justice correspondent evan perez. Tell us the statement that was just released about these other countries trying to influence the election. Reporter thats right, pam. This is an unusual statement from a top official at the office of the director of National Intelligence who is in charge, as you pointed out, of helping prepare the government for the 2020 election and trying to thwart some of the efforts of these foreign countries. And the three countries he identified as essentially trying to pick favorites in the 2020 election, russia, china, and iran. And ill go through what the assessments are on each. On china, he says that we assess that china prefers President Trump, who bangieijing does not as reelectable, how the chinese are trying to undermine anyone who is criticizing the chinese, anyone from the covid pandemic to obviously some of the more recent battles over tiktok. With regard to russia, we are seeing the same thing that we saw in 2016. According to him, we assess that russia is using a range of measures to primarily denigrate former Vice President biden and what it sees as an antirussia establishment. That is an active effort to not only undermine his campaign but also some People Associated with the kremlin according to him are also trying to help Donald Trumps campaign trying to at least use online influences to prop up his campaign. As far as iran goes, what he says is essentially they are trying to undermine confidence in the u. S. System trying to divide americans. This is a highly unusual statement to be coming just about a hundred days before americans go to the polls. Andbout or are doing. It does say, however, that the chinese want to make sure President Trump is not reelected and they are trying to and the russians are trying to help his reelection efforts. All right, evan perez, thanks for laying it out for us. We appreciate it. And with the election just three months away, President Trump looking to seize on any opening, is trying to play up joe bidens comments about diversity and black and latino communities. The Vice President took to twitter to clarify. And it comes as biden is set to announce his running mate, which may very well be an africanamerican woman, as cnns Jeremy Diamond reports. Joe biden this morning totally disparaged and insulted the black community. Reporter sensing an opening, President Trump is making his latest play to discourage black americans from voting for joe biden after the Presumptive Democratic nominee said this. Unlike the Africanamerican Community with notable exceptions, the Latino Community is an incredibly diverse community, with incredibly different attitudes about different things. You go to florida you find a very different attitude about immigration than when you do in when youre in arizona. Reporter biden cleaned up his comments hours later tweeting in no way did i mean to suggest the Africanamerican Community is a monolith, not by identity, not on issues, not at all. But its not the first time biden has suggested just that. If you have a problem figuring out whether youre for me or trump, then you aint black. Reporter he walked back those comments too. Trump, who has a long history of racist and racially charged comments took to twitter arguing, Sleepy Joe Biden is no longer worthy of the black vote, amplifying a concerted push by his campaign to win over black voters or, more importantly, dissuade them from turning out for biden. Youre living in poverty. Your schools are no good. You have no jobs. What the hell do you have to lose . Reporter its a play trump made in 2016, too, when black turnout dropped to pre2008 levels. This time some gop operatives with ties to Trumps Campaign are also working to boost rapper kanye west, helping him to get on the ballot in several states like wisconsin, where an effort to siphon votes from biden could swing what is expected to be a tight contest. I have nothing to do with him getting on the ballot. Reporter trumps attacks on biden are also getting more outlandish. No religion, no anything, hurt the bible, hurt god, hes against god. Reporter biden, a devout catholic, fired back, calling the bizarre attack shameful. All of this as trump continues to trail biden by a wide margin. The latest ipsos reuters poll showing trump down ten points. And that was our Jeremy Diamond reporting. I want to turn now to ou money lead. Today we learned the United States economy added another 1. 8 million jobs in july. Now, that is a small improvement after months of losses. But nearly 13 Million People are still out of work since the pandemic started. And the Unemployment Rate is still over 10 . And if you thought those tragic numbers would motivate lawmakers so quickly to pass another Economic Relief bill, well, youd be wrong. Moments ago they said they have made no progress today and they are still at a standstill with no more negotiation talks scheduled. The big events are back and xfinity is your home for the return of live sports. Welcome back. In our health lead, new york schools have the green light to reopen this fall. Now its up to each School District to submit its plans to the state and decide whats best for students. Joining me now to discuss is dr. Ashish jha, director of harvards Global Health institute. Thanks for coming on, dr. Jha. There are so many questions from parents right now as they try to figure out whether to send their kids to schools. You look at district by district, chicago and los angeles decided school will be exclusively online. Then you have new york state leaving it up to each School District to open. New york citing the low Positivity Rate across the state. What do you think about this districtbydistrict approach when it comes to opening schools . Yeah. So thank you for having me on. I think it is unfortunate consequence of the fact that we have no National Plan on the pandemic, we have no real National Plan on schools. And so weve left all of the pandemic fighting to individual states, and states are leaving this all up to individual School Districts. Now, obviously everyones trying to pass the buck, it seems. You know, thats right. And there is a large element of that. Obviously you want to customize policies for local conditions. But the problem is that there is not a lot of like, School Superintendents dont have a lot of training in how to deal with pandemics. And so the idea that everybody figures it out on their own really is a pretty tough way to go. But the administration, as we know, released guidelines from the cdc on two different occasions at least. So, what do you say to that though . They say we released these guidelines for all schools to follow across the country. So, i think i think that the guidelines are wholly inadequate. But its not my opinion that matters. Its the opinion of School Superintendents. And they think its largely inadequate. Just the guidelines have not been helpful. They dont really tell you when you can open up safely or not. Theres one guideline that says everybody should just open, which of course is irresponsible. And so i think the cdc has not been, you know, at its finest in this outbreak here. And its still really murky about like the specific scenarios. Like if one student tests positive for covid, do you shut down the whole school, just the classroom . Does everyone go into quarantine . And were already seeing this play out in some schools are having to confront those challenges. Lets look at new york state. The state said it still needs to sign off on the districts plans. Theyve made clear that masks would be mandatory as well as social distancing and Contact Tracing if these schools open. But how practical is that, especially for little kids to follow those measures . So, i think it is practical. And i think a place like new york, which has brought its infection numbers way down has a 1 test Positivity Rate. One of the bonuses is you get to open up school safety. I think there are a lot of 5 and 6 and 7yearolds who can wear a mask for a good chunk of the day and we should try to do that. And i think that given the cost of keeping everybody at home for the whole next year, new york places like new york should really be giving it a shot in trying to get kids back in. Lets talk about the overall risk to kids. President trump once again stressed that children dont face the same issues with coronavirus as adults. Lets listen. Very Young Children are incredibly powerful. Theyre much stronger than all of us when it comes to the immune system. Its an incredible thing to see. Okay. So lets put this in perspective. According to the w. H. O. , the proportion of reported cases in very Young Children and babies has increased sevenfold since february. Now the president s aides say, look, hes trying to make the case that kids are less susceptible. But give us the reality, if you would, dr. Jha. Absolutely. Heres what we know. We certainly know that young kids, or just children in general, are less likely to get very, very sick from the virus. So that is an important thing that we do know. We dont have evidence that theyre necessarily much less likely to get infected. And there is some evidence that the younger kids are less likely to transmit, but even that evidence isnt so great. But the only other point i would raise is that schools arent run by kids alone. They are run by adults, teachers, staff. And youve got teachers and parents. But really quick on that. There are studies that show theyre less likely to transmit. Isnt there another study that shows they have more of the viral load in their noses . What does that mean . Yeah. So, look, we dont have anything definitive here. When i look at thats the bottom line. The bottom line is i think younger kids are probably less likely to transmit. But they transmit enough that we still have to take it seriously. All right, dr. Ashish jha, thank you so much for coming on. Well, arizona has been hard hit by coronavirus ranking number two in the country for the number of cases per capita. But after imposing new restrictions, the number of new infections in arizona are declining. Though as cnns Miguel Marquez reports, it doesnt mean the state is in the clear. Reporter arizona at a crossroads. Cases decreasing but still a lot of virus out there. Just in time for high season in the desert. Weve got to get our act in order now to prepare for the fall when the winter visitors return, when the cold and flu season returns. Reporter in addition, some 70,000 students will soon return to Arizona State university. Tens of thousands more to universities statewide. And many k12 schools are expected to begin soon offering at least limited inperson instruction. Arizona in a race to tame its outbreak. To think that this virus is in control, i think is a mistake and ive heard people say that. Reporter the states Positivity Rate has dropped from more than 27 in july to just over 16 now. Guidelines for fully reopening schools here say the Positivity Rate, among other factors, should be at 5 or lower on a twoweek rolling average. When governor ducey decided to open up the state, we were at 18 cases per day. In . In pima county. Yesterday, we had 283 cases. And thats a good day. Reporter like all local officials, tucsons mayor was barred in may and early june from issuing mask orders. Arizonas governor reversed himself on june 17th, reimposed restrictions on businesses and allowed localities to require masks in public. We saw in arizona, which was a good example, they went up and they started to really clamp down and do things right. And the cases came right down. Reporter but arizona has a long way to go. Before reopening, arizonas daily case count was in the hundreds. By july 1st, it was nearly 5,000 new cases every day. Today the state is seeing about 1,500 cases daily. Much of the spread attributed to the states reopening too aggressively. Even some Business Owners agree. It went crazy. It was as if they declared that the pandemic was over. Reporter this man has dished up mexican food for 56 years. Its owner shut his own restaurant down until the spread of the virus slowed. Took on this big financial hit so that we could concentrate on being safe. Our health and wellbeing is the foremost important thing here at the business. Reporter the grand canyon state learning that lesson the hard way. Now, arizona has another issue right now. And that is that the number of people seeking out tests has declined markedly over the last several weeks. Thats because the time to get those results back was, in some cases, two weeks or more. Arizona State University researchers think that theres about 1 to 2 of the population here, 150,000 people have the virus, may be asymptomatic, dont know that they have it. And they really want to try to get to those people and understand where the virus is. They know theres a lot out there. But at this point the people getting tested, those rates are coming down, which is a little disturbing to Public Health officials here. Thank you so much, miguel. We appreciate it. Well, my next guest got coronavirus back in march. Months later, she is still back and forth to the doctor. Are you still at risk for a heart attack or stroke . Even if youre on a statin . We need to provide revenues now, to solve the problems we know are coming. Well, 32yearold melanie montana was one of almost 5 Million People in the nation diagnosed with covid19. Get this. It has been more than 140 days since she first got sick. And she is still suffering from effects of this virus. A former teacher, her days are now filled with doctors appointments and blood work and naps to deal with the fatigue. Melanie montana joins me now to talk about all of this. Wow, melanie. What a journey its been for you. You became sick back in march. How are you feeling today . Uh, today i feel pretty i feel good. Ive been making progress. And what does good mean in your world now . Thats pretty true. Good as in im awake. I did not need a tenhour nap today, which is awesome. Its day by day because of the Chronic Fatigue is something that weighs so heavily upon my lifestyle. But i have my sense of smell back and taste, which is pretty wonderful. Its the little things. How are your days different now since you have been battling covid and the aftermath from before . Oh, i mean, the days have been a lot easier in terms of having more energy to get laundry done or do things that seem kind of simple or minute to most people. But it allows me to now i dont have to do laundry without my inhaler or im not so dependent upon just baby steps and just walking from here to the bathroom, here to the kitchen. So, a normal routine for everyones daily life for me is something now that im really relishing. But lets look at the big picture because we were talking during the break you were working out with a physical trainer and you were doing all kinds of things. And now doing laundrys a big step for you, right . Oh, yeah, absolutely. But the thing is thats the problem. Theres not enough attention thats being brought to these kind of aftermath effects, these lingering longhaul symptoms that so many of us seem to be experiencing. And so thats generally why were trying to kind of bridge this gap of knowledge in between where, you know, fauci obviously is advocating for certain protocol. But we have to really kind of get every state on board in order for this to be something that we can crush prior to the new year. And dr. Faucis talked about Chronic Fatigue syndrome as something that can happen to people after they deal with covid. But your doctors havent officially diagnosed you with that. Is that correct . Thats correct. Theyre not really making any official diagnosis simply because everything is still so new, and were trying to learn a little bit more about this virus every single day. So, i found a new doctor, a new primary care doctor that was a little bit more lined with what i was looking for in terms of empathy and a little bit more compassion, and understanding. And me being able to advocate for my own body and knowing, okay, something is off, and he was wonderful. So im quite pleased with that. But he also doesnt know. Come september i have to make multiple specialist appointments just to tackle certain issues. And you really do have to be your own advocate when it comes to your body. Of course. You lost your job because of coronavirus. Also your health insurance. How are you managing all of these new doctors appointments and everything thats coming along with this . Dipping into my savings absolutely, which is very frustrating. And also ive had to move back in with my mother. To offset whatever apartment fees i have to worry about. So there are just so many costs to consider between student loans, just Car Insurance payments, things that would never be an issue per se if i had a steady income. But its been so overwhelming just wrapping my head around the entire process. Ive been lucky to have my mother. My 66yearold mother has to baby me and help me throughout this. Its very its hard to put her through that and hard to deal with that myself. Its hard all around. That overwhelming feeling is what millions of americans are feeling right now, melanie. So you are not alone. Thank you for coming on to share your story. Of course. Thank you for having me. So we just heard melanies story. And when you look at whats going on across the country, there are millions of people suffering from the Mental Health effects of coronavirus isolation. Former First Lady Michelle Obama is one of them. She reassured her instagram followers, saying she is doing just fine after opening up about experiencing lowgrade depression due to the pandemic and the political and racial divide. Joining me now is a clinical psychologist and author of the book detox your thoughts. Great to see you, andrea. This has been a real talker. She said the idea that what this country is going through shouldnt have any effect on us that we should all just be okay all the time. That just doesnt feel real to me. So i hope you all are allowing yourselves to feel whatever it is youre feeling. She makes such an important point that i think a lot of people can relate to right now. Its okay to feel kind of crummy. Exactly. Those are such significant words. And i think its so helpful to destigmatize what she has said. Because i think too often we get into this pattern of, oh, depression is this and normal is this. In reality its all and right now so many of us are suffering in significant ways that there is no label needed. Because a lot of us that are even normal are really hurting pretty badly. And lets talk about tools to help people. Because i personally i lost my mom in may and ive been going through a hard time. Ive been going to a therapist and its been really helpful for me. But theres still a stigma around this idea of asking for help. And what do you do to encourage people who are going through such a tough time right now struggling with all the uncertainty, the unknown . What do you advise to them to do . What are the tools available to them . Yeah. Its so true that there is a stigma. And i encourage people to think about their Mental Health as they would their physical health. That can help us rise above the stress and connect with that greater sense of purpose. Getting outside of ourselves, getting out of our head is so important. Andrea bonior, thank you so much.
