It was to say the least, not exactly an effort to heal the wounds of impeachment or to bring the nation together it was an airing of grievances and s settling of scores. A preview of the even less shackled and tethered trump. We will see in the next nine months to five years. We first went through russia, russia, russia. It was all bull. We thought after the election would stop, but it didnt stop. It just started. You did that with several people by name. Even if they had inkling of restrain, there was this constant drum beat reminder of him saying im why youre here. You better stay in line. Some republicans said that they thought President Trump learned his lesson. They seemed to suggest whether its lamar alexander, collins, others, hes not going to do this again. Hes chase sant. How sad and naive of these senators. I think they were telling constituents that to justify their kind of bumbled statements that both said he did something wrong and something they didnt agree with. But then they didnt vote to back that up. Thats clear whats happening. I will say watching the speech this morning, it was emotionally exhausting. The National Prayer breakfast or the east room . Probably both. But i will focus on the east room. And also i think for a lot of democrats, it makes you feel power leless. Because you have this president who is acting insane and you have a Republican Party that is for the most part incredibly loyal. Because Political Party and his political hold over them is what is making them make decisions. For Susan Collins and others as well. I wondered exactly because we have been through this before. We had a president who did something that most people disapproved of. And went through an impeachment. Bill clinton and heres what bill clinton did after he was acquitted by the senate in 1999. I want to say, again, to the american people, how profoundly sorry i am for what i said and did to trigger these events in the great burden they have imposed on the congress and on the american people. Theres a lot of room to criticize both of them about politics and their decisions, but someone who has followed nancy pelosi for years and i covered the 2012 campaign. But one thing no one really went a after is his faith because thats one thing you knew about mitt romney that was genuine. But the wit that this is done is state delegates or equivalents and buttigieg is slightly ahead. This is a race for delegates. Hillary clinton won b more pop larceny votes in the primaries in 2008. And she still did not get the nomination. Its looking like based on what we know right now, they might end up with similar totals of delegates. But what has been denied, someone like Bernie Sanders is the momentum. If it hes able to win iowa, have a moment, go to New Hampshire with a full head of steam, that creates a feeling of inevitability that you cant buy. Pete buttigieg has been able to turn this into massive fundraising and really boost his profile and were seeing that in New Hampshire already. More people donating to hisment campaign. Going up in the polls. Bypassing in at least one. Joe biden, im not sure when that i was taken, but i dont know if matteit maerlts. He was denied the big fanfare. But hes benefitted from this. No question. I agree with that. Although i will say theres an expectation. That pst bst would run away with it and win by 5 points. Maybe thats unfair. Regardless of how we cut it, its not going to look like that. So im not sure he would have gotten some bigger boost if the result hs come out. But the biggest problem isnt necessarily that we dont know who won. Its the problem that everyone senses a huge lack of leadership in the Democratic Party. Nobody trusts results. Nobody thinks anybody can run anything. This is an opportunity for a candidate to step in and say, you know what, that was mess. When im president , im going to run things much better. And explain how. Because thats how you will get trust and get votes. The amount of delegates in iowa doesnt matter all that much. But voters being able to trust you, to keep the trains running will get you the nomination. The primaries tuesday in New Hampshire. Buttigieg says he can win there. A new poll hes in second place. Sanders leads. There has been some growth for both from last month. Booiden has seen support slip. Is it possible you think buttigieg could win in New Hampshire . We have seen stranger things. We saw President Trump lose in iowa and build momentum and win in New Hampshire. Theres been a history of candidates who lose in iowa who dont win in iowa winning in New Hampshire. So theres a sense that all these candidates are trying to have a rebound in New Hampshire. So tallahassee possibility that anything can happen. Bernie sanders has the advant e homefield advantage. So hes the favorite. He would have to pull off a major upset to win. This is a state that also demographically would work well for buttigieg given the fact he has better support among white voters and not minor ities. Joe biden is just trying to survive to New Hampshire to nevada and South Carolina. Elizabeth warren from neighboring massachusetts. She also could do well there. But shes polling not so great. She stands at third in iowa. Shes pulled down tv ads in an effort to conserve cash. She has potential to make a comeback, but it doesnt look great right now. Thats the thing. Looking a at this field, he might win New Hampshire. But whats his path after that . Elizabeth warren has to answer the same question. She comes in third. Wheres her state . And i think thats appealing to people. It reminds them why they liked him. I dont think thats going to change his trajectory in New Hampshire because his polling numbers have been going down. Theres questions about his money and finances. If we see more of that and more of his humanity, that will be appealing and remind people why they were for him to begin with. Whats the problem . He did really poorly in iowa. I know that people who support him are his base is africanamerican voters and counting on them to turn out in South Carolina. But shouldnt he be doing a little better in the early states . I was talking to voters in iowa and a lot of them were people going for Pete Buttigieg or warren. They would say they were worried about his age. They were worried about they were looking to turn the page. They wanted new blood. That came from voters who were supporting Pete Buttigieg. Its not that they dont like joe biden. He was a lot of their second choice. However, his performances in iowa were kind of uneven. You saw him in the morning. He was one way. In the evening he may have been another way. The campaign trail is grueling. And sometimes it hits some people harder than others and that can be tough. Take a listen to biden taking a stab at Pete Buttigieg who has a narrow lead in iowa in the delegates. Calling into question his age and experience. I do believe its a risk to be straight up. To nominate someone who has never held an Office Higher than mayor of a town in indiana. Buttigieg responded as well. If that argument is about eligibility, we just had the first election of the 2020 proces process. I think thats my answer. What do you think . I think candidates get caught up in trying to attack other people who are in their lane. Pete buttigieg is the socalled moderate candidate so hes try ing to go after him to peel those people off. When i talk to reasonable democrat, everybody is scared of Bernie Sanders. They know, trump knows hes the easiest to beat. So i really question why booid b isnt going after sanders because attacking booet judges people to get them to flip to you, i dont really understand that. You could be attacking bernie and saying, this isnt going to work. Hes not electable. Theres a reason why donald trump wants to run against him. One of the things we saw in iowa is that sanders theory of the case, the idea he was going to bring all these young people and Blue Collar Workers and people who normally dont participate in the process, they knocked on 500,000 doors. That didnt happen. He might still win iowa, but he did not get the flood of supporters that he thought. Hes even acknowledge d as much. Thats a warning sign for democrats that turnout in iowa was flat from 2016. It means that there wasnt that ground swell of support that Bernie Sanders said he was going to bring out. Thats a big issue in an election thats about eligibility and making the case. We have seen sanders rise in the polls. That he can have this revolution of all these people coming out to vote for him. If that becomes a question t may make it more difficult to win in states beyond New Hampshire that are close to his backyard in places like South Carolina and nevada and super tuesday.
