Fact, President Trump asked the ukrainian president to investigate the bidens. We know this not only because of the rough transcript of the july 25th call that the white house released but because President Trump admitted it publicly. What exactly did you help zelensky would do about the bidens after your phone call. Well, i would think that if they were honest about it, they would start a Major Investigation into the bidens. It is a very simple answer. A very simple answer indeed. And what was the Trump Administration willing to do to secure this investigation into the bidens . Were they willing to hold off a white house meeting which president zelensky wanted to show support to his public and to putin . Well here is u. S. Ambassador to the eu gordon sondland. I know that members of this committee frequently frame these complicated issues in the form of a simple question. Was there a quid pro quo . As i testified previously, with regard to the requested white house call and the white house meeting, the answer is yes. Yes. Sondland said no question, it was a quid pro quo. Hey, ukraine, you want the white house meeting, you need to announce these investigations. Okay. Now what about that 400 million in u. S. Aid that ukraine also desperately wanted . Well Mick Mulvaney explained why that aid was held up. He said so on camera. Now he said he did so, the president , because the president wanted an investigation into ukraines role in the 2016 election. The look back to what happened in 2016 certainly was part of the thing that he was worried about in corruption with that nation and that is absolutely appropriate. With holding the funding. Yeah. What you just describing is a quid pro quo. Funding will not flow unless the investigation into the democratic server happened as well. We do that all the time with foreign policy. And i have news for everybody, get over it. There is go doing be political influence in foreign policy. So, yes, there was a quid pro quo on the military aid. And the other aid, 400 million worth according to mulvaney. Now two points on what mulvaney said there. One, he later tried to unsay what he said. And two, mulvaney is port raving this as trying to get participate in a Justice Department investigation into 2016. But that is consistently not what President Trump said he wants. President trump wants a look into a debunked Conspiracy Theory about ukraine and the dnc server that u. S. Intelligence Officials Say was hacked by russia, not by ukraine. They keep taking it to court and, no, were not going to wait until the courts decide. That might be information that is available to the senate. We cant wait for that because, again, it is a technique. Its obstruction of justice. So i guess the question is do you think democrats have made sufficient case . This idea that theyre not going to wait for the courts or take too long, et cetera. Those are not arguments about the substance of the evidence, those are arguments about timing and politics. Should they keep going. Timing and politics do matter. So i think that is something they have to take into consideration. I think that they made a case. For anybody who wants to look at the case honestly and take the information honestly, i think they made an absolutely air tight case that the president has done something that is impeachable. The republicans dont want to absorb that information. And i actually dont think it would make any difference whether it was john bolton that was up there or Rudy Giuliani. If they are somehow able to get the people to testify, there is nothing i just cant think of anything that would make the republicans change their mind because what has been demonstrated over the last week is so horrifying and so clear and they could still sit there and say, well it is inappropriate. It is so far beyond inappropriate. Every argument that theyve made has been completely destroyed so they came out and made all of the defenses that one by one were knocked down and left with no defense except to say it is bad but not impeachable. So the argument shes making is house and Senate Republicans are just not goodfaith operators. There is no evidence it will convince them even if President Trump were to shoot somebody on fifth avenue and everybody saw it. That may be true. But there is a gap for democrats in the opening if they want to make the charge of bribery or extortion, however you put it, you need to prove the component of the holding 400 million in aid. I think the hearings have done an excellent job that the white house withheld the meetings for the investigations but if i were sitting in the senate you could make an argument that president zelensky was entitled to a white house meeting. He was entitled to the funds. Those are congressionally authorized but they havent proven that case directly primarily because Mick Mulvaney hasnt been made to testify or submit documents so that is a huge gray area. I dont think even if you prove that, that would sway republicans. But in the case theyre making, that is a gap. What do you make of it all, jackie. Mulvaney did say the funds were held in part, not entirely, but in part to push the ukrainians to announce this investigation into the 2016 election. And he tries to make it seem like it is something reasonable and it is the Justice Department investigation. When we know President Trump said it this morning, it is about this crazy Conspiracy Theory that his former Homeland Security adviser called debunked. Right. So i think theyre going to have to go forward should this investigation happen without seven witnesses that are firsthand account. Which is one of the things that republicans were criticizing some of the witnesses we saw over the past week. Mike pompeo, Vice President pence, Mick Mulvaney, sondland listed them all. People who were involved in this whole dual track of foreign policy. It is unlikely well hear from any of them. So you cant really if youre nancy pelosi, you could see why shes pushing this ahead. Because it is getting them to testify is go out of the realm of possibilities. So lara, i spoke with a source close to the White House Legal Team and they say they are not convinced that the house is going to vote to impeach. What do you think . What are your sources telling you . No, i think what were hearing so far if they are fully done with hearing testimony and they most likely are because pelosi doesnt want to wait and it could take a long time with the courts and theyll push this over to judiciary which will write up the articles. Beyond that we arent sure what the articles will include just yet, if they will include emoluments or things related to the Mueller Investigation in those. But it looks as though the very next step that will come before christmas is this hit to judiciary and then they move forward. Are they going to have hearings in judiciary or just behind the scenes . But his complaints about ambassador yovanovitch not hanging up his picture crazy. The thing is hes allowed to remove an ambassador obviously. But how theyve gone after her and smeared her and tried to destroy her life is just so above and beyond anything that ive ever seen before. He keeps doing it. Yeah. So what is your problem . If she yes, she was standing in the way of your little scheme and you removed her, why do you need to destroy her. And amanda, there is a difference between this crazy ukrainian Conspiracy Theory that ukraine hacked crowdstrike blah, blah or whatever and this thing that a lot of republicans hang their hats on which is ukrainian officials, some officials said nice things about Hillary Clinton and said bad things about donald trump during the 2016 election. What i find really interesting when it came to the impeachment hearings yesterday is as much as House Republicans work to defend trump, mainly by arguing the process, going after the media, attacking shifty schiff and the rest, they didnt defend trump on the conspiracy theories. In fact when fiona hill made a point in her Opening Statements of pointing out how republicans and others were spreading these false narratives and the damage it was doing, they backtracked and said, no, we put out a report and we blamed russia, dont worry. No that is not true. Youve been going along with this all of the time. But how will this change whether it gets to the senate because the Senate Republicans cant argue process when Mitch Mcconnell is controlling the process. So theyre going to have to find a way to defend trump on the substance and this is going to be tough. So, again, conspiracy theories. Part of his attack on ambassador yovanovitch is based on conspiracy theories. Nasty stuff that Rudy Giuliani heard from the former prosecutor in ukraine. Here is a a little bit of what the president said unchallenged of course on fox and friends this morning. She said bad things about me. She wouldnt defend me and i have the right to change an ambassador. This is not an angel, this woman, okay. There are a lot of things that she did that i didnt like. But there is no evidence that she did anything like that. And the former prosecutor had backtracked on some of the things that he said about her. But, okay, fine, then just fire her. Dont have this goat rodeo of a process tearing down her reputation. The president has the right to pick his ambassador but the way the process that went down before she was let go and after is highly irregular and didnt need to happen. The same argument also applies to the Smear Campaign against hunter biden. If you want to make an argument that he unfairly profited after his dads service, you have that information. Everybody knew the money he was getting. You didnt need an investigation to do that. You could have ran that campaign in the public except for what is up for the yovanovitch thing. Why does he keep this is classic trump and also the very it is a pattern that all of the republicans are using, when they take their cues from the white house. They did this to yovanovitch and vindman and accusing him of dual loyalty which smacks at antisemitism. So it is a repeated pattern from the white house that theyve done with a lot of witnesses. And because he cant say the real reason they got rid of yovanovitch which is that she was on to their little scheme so he has to come up with other reasons to make it seem like she was so terrible. See if you can spot what is wrong with this claim about the whistleblower complaint. It bore no relationship. It said there were eight, seven or eight quid pro quos. There were none. It bore no relationship to my call. Nobody brings that out. The whistleblower is, in my opinion, a political operative. Daniel dale, a fact checker extraordinary fact checks every word the president says. Lets start with the claim. He says this a lot. What is your issue with this. He said this more than 45 times at this point. And the whistleblower complaint not only bore a relationship to trumps call. It has been overwhelmingly corroborated by the rough transcript trump himself released so the whistleblowers three main allegations were, one, trump wanted zelensky to investigate biden and that is confirmed and trump wanted the investigation of the debunked server Conspiracy Theory and that is confirmed and wanted zelensky to speak to Rudy Giuliani and attorney barr and that is confirmed. So this is overwhelmingly confirmed. Take a listen to this from President Trump attacking the House Intelligence Committee chairman adam schiff. Schiff, remember this, he makes it all up. Hes sick. There is something wrong with him. So he made up my phone call. He made it up. He made up a phone call and then when i released it everybody was embarrassed. Now there is this thing when adam schiff did kind of a dramatic reenactment, a paraphrase of the president s phone call. I dont think he was lie being it but it is probably not politically the smartest thing. But the president has a timeline issue here. He does. So ive heard that schiffs rendition was exaggerated and trump is reasonable to be miffed about it but trump is saying that schiff spoke and then he outsmarted schiff by releasing the transcript the next day or sometime after. Not what happened. Trump released the transcript first. His complaint about schiff was that he had the transcript released. And it is a lie that makes him look better and adam schiff look worse. That is one hypothesis. And he released one issue he this with marie yovanovitch, a woman hes been smearing now for weeks. Take a listen. She wont hang my picture in the embassy, okay. Shes in charge of the embassy. She wouldnt hang it. It took a year and a half or two years for her to get the picture up. We have dont have an official comment from yovanovitch but there was a worldwide delay in the hanging of trumps official picture because he didnt sit for the picture so it took nine months to send it to embassies or kylie atwood heard from a state Department Official who served in kiev said she didnt refuse anything we didnt get the picture until late 2017 so trump was at fault for the thing hes blaming yovanovitch for. So he tells more lies and untruths and falsehoods than any president in modern memory. Is there evidence that this has eroded his credibility at all . Well weve seen it in the polls consistently that about twothirds of americans do not think the president is honest and trustworthy. We pay a lot of attention to his base and that is important. We have to understand where his staunch supporters think but we have to remember that the overwhelming majority of americans do not believe what this president is saying. But were also proud of the hundreds of people who have stepped up to support the douglas plan which is praised as the most comprehensive plan put forward in the 2020 campaign for doing something concretely and systematically about systemic racism in this country.
