Dorian could grow into a cat 4 storm before it slams floridas east coast. The governor telling everyone to get ready now. The intensity of the storm i think there is a pretty high degree of center this is of certainty this is a major hurricane. Do you have time before it reached to prepare. With this powerful storm on the way, gas has become a major issue. Some stations are already out. Food and water are hit and miss at some florida stores. Evacuation orders are starting to trickle in as another problem emerges. Dorians forecast shows its slowing down which could mean it could linger for days. Cnn has teams up and down the florida coast ahead of dorian. We start with cnn meteorologist allison chinchar. So dorians newest track will come out within the hour. What do you expect to see. We may see a change in that track. Weve had new model runs come out for both the american and european model and both of them showing changes which may in turn result in an official track change from the National Hurricane center. But here is what we know now. Hurricane dorian winds at 115 miles per hour. That officially makes it a major hurricane. The movement is still to the northwest at about 10 miles per hour. Were going to have to focus on that direction and that speed over the next 48 to 72 hours. Because that is going to answer two very essential questions, where it makes landfall and when does it make landfall. But as of now we still anticipate additional strengthening up to a category 4 storm. Unfortunately it will be that strength as it crossed over the bahamas and still expected to be a major hurricane when it makes landfall across some point in florida. And then the question becomes when does it turn back to the north . This is where the different models rary. One going further west, one going further east. Here is a look. This blue dot is the European American model. Dot is the the red dot wants to make a landfall likely late monday night into early tuesday morning. Near kind of the central portion of florida. Then pushes further inland before finally going off to the north. The european model, the new run really just skirts along the coast and they both then head up towards georgia as well as into the carolinas. Thank you so much for that. I want to get straight to florida to rosa flores in West Palm Beach and the governor said fuel shortages are becoming a problem. Youre seeing that firsthand. Is there a plan to get more gas to the stations . Reporter you know, that is the plan. Let me show you around because im in a gas station that does have fuel and you could see that the line curls around this light. From talking to people here, they say that they have been driving around trying to find gas stations that have ga tha have gas and this is one of the few that does. But if you take a look here, some of the pumps do have gas and others do not. The owner of this gas station said his family owns four gas stations and only this one has gas at the moment. Now here is the thing, because there is a state of emergency for all 67 counties, that waves the rules. That allows the fuel of the flow of fuel to come into the state, that of course is because Governor Ron Desantis issued that declaration. Here is the other thing, dana, we learned from the Governors Office that florida Highway Patrolmen will be escorting refuelling trucks to strategic and critical areas in florida. Again, because there are already reported shortages. And dorian hasnt even made landfall. Buff again a lot of people here waiting in line, looking for fuel stations that actually have fuel to make sure that they can be prepared for a potential evacuation. And rosa, real quick, have you encountered or heard about any reports of price gouging . Reporter yes. Indeed. The attorney general of the state of florida telling cnn just moments ago that they have received at least 1,000 calls of price gouging. Most of them for fuel and water. In fact, the owner of this gas station telling us he was one of those individuals who reported a price gouging of water. So were going to continue monitoring and seeing if those numbers will increase. But according to the attorney generals office, it is against state law to price gouge because there is that evacuation excuse me that state of emergency in the tate of florida. Rosa, thank you so much for that report. Now cnns leyla santiago is in north miami where supplies are flying off the shelves. And layla, what is going on . Is it a mad rush or do people feel like they have the weekend to stock up . Reporter weve seen a little bit of both. Some moments where they are peaking and folks coming in and then now where you are seeing a calm down. We are in the section right now where this was made last night because of the hurricane. A section for supplies. You have batteries, a power bank to charge your phone, you need candles, they also have extension cords, presumably for generators that could be used should power come out and then take a look over here where you could see this is a popular item, the lanterns. This layer is just about gone. They have got some more down here and i could see these folks are looking at the price, getting ready. 15 she mentioned to have that lantern and be ready for Hurricane Dorian. Go right ahead, maam. So one of the things that folks are also looking for, water, we were here when a truckload came in. It lasted maybe about an hour before they ran out. And folks are making sure that they have those basic supplies to get through what government officials are recommending at least seven days should power be out, should resources be limited after dorian. This is one of the busiest airports in the country. From what you are seeing, are they prepared . Reporter i would say they are extremely prepared right now and the truth is the effect of dorian has quite hit the airport just yet. You could take a look and see there are expectations of delays and canceled flights. That hasnt kicked in just yet. What you see over here is all of the lines of people starting to try and fly out. We have talked to people who have cut their vacations short. People who were trying to get back. They didnt want to risk the fact that the hurricane came in early. And so here at the airport i sat in on a meeting just beyond those doors with they sat with airlines, they talked with noaa and the faa and other members of government officials about how they could determine how long they could keep this airport open. Whether they could let these people begin to begin flying out if the storm is coming. Our most urgent concern and immediate concern obviously is the health and welfare of all of our residents. And we are doing everything to get the word out to them to be prepared. The storm itself will bring plenty of rain so weve got concerns about flooding. Theyll be wind and so were concerned about wind damage, et cetera. So the more the better people are prepared ahead of time, the better chances of getting through this relatively unscathed. Joining us now from west palms Emergency Operation center. Do you anticipate ordering mandatory evacuations . We dont know. That is a possibility. And that is prael and that is a call by palm beach count because the evacuations will extend beyond the borders of West Palm Beach and so well take our lead from the county itself. I dont know what the thinking it over there at the county but well certainly abide by whatever their instructions are. If an evacuation happens people have to be able to leave. And we have been reporting that gas stations are reporting themselves that there are fuel shortages. So how are you and other officials there addressing that so if people have to leave, that they can . Well weve heard the complaints about fuel shortages as well and were using whatever influence we might have to try to get fuel in. Obviously the governor has a little bit bigger pulpit to stand upon, bully pulpit but i know hes aware of the situation. The port is only an hour away from where we sit here in West Palm Beach so we hope combined efforts of the governor and us as mayors can influence getting some fuel here immediately. And the governor did say he wants the florida Highway Patrol to escort fuel trucks to these areas where there are gas shortages. Are your teams there in your city helping with that . Well, we havent been approached. That would be the florida Highway Patrol. Were certainly ready, willing and able however the governor may need our assistance and we understand that is a priority and we want to be available to assist any way we can with that level. What is the communication level between not just you and county officials and state officials like the governor. Are you in communication. Yes. We are in communication. Even at federal level. The effort of cooperation and collaboration among the Different Levels of government has been out standing and we anticipate it will continue to be that way. Bill crystal, ill start with you as somebody who worked in the white house and has understands, frankly, the game that there are off the record conversations that happen. What is your take on this . There are off the record conversations and when you are at a summer white house or bedminster or a long weekend and not with your family and the white house staff is there and you go out to dinner, it is all off the record and people do that. I think the executive assistant to the president , maybe shes a little too close to do that. Communication the director or Kellyanne Conway or the chief of staff, having said that. Somebody is out to get her. She had a conversation with a bunch of reporters. The reporters didnt tell donald trump what she said and as far as we know it remains off the record, someone else found out in the white house that she had this conversation. Maybe there was Something Else that got out that trump was unhappy about and they decided to go after her and blame her. It does show a certain amount of back stabbing in the Trump White House which is not a huge headline. But the fact that she fired her and denied her access to the white house that day. There are people that didnt work out while in the white house and you find them a job at an agency and they have a few months to look and they work in some lower profile place for a while. There are ways to ooe to easee out of the white house. There arent many soft landings in the Trump White House. And proximity is power and i can remember going in Marthas Vineyard going out to dinner with reporters and the person who was the president s aide saying, im not going to come because you have a few dinks and youre eating and off the record has definitely slid a bit during this administration and you cant say anything that is so juicy, from what i understand in the reporting, she said something that somebody then talked to somebody else about and you have to be so careful. Off the record should be not to be pollyana, but off the record shouldnt slide. Off the record is off the record. Because we have off the record conversations to get better understanding and context of the people that we cover and the issues that we cover. Look, i think bill is right. Someone was out to get her. Whatever happened there, somebody used that morsel to then feed into this. I do think i think this sort of stuff, until we know exactly what was said and we may never know but it is hard to judge, was it just fied or not justified. The one thing i would say is i do think donald trump is someone who demands total fealty, total loilt loyalty but it is not a twoway street with his aides. You must be loyal to him but he has no requirement to be loyal to you. I was struck the same way bill was. She was walking people up into trump tower and shes been with him since the beginning, since he got elected president. You would think maybe you would bring her in and have a conversation much less like you come here and all of a sudden your white house pass doesnt work any more. I think it is difficult to underestimate her influence for an aide who is not a prominent aide and not yet reached the age of 30. She carried a great sense of power. So in that respect he doesnt come off as a bad person or selfago grand izing and if you get it wrong you say i conflated two stories and it was emotional and our soldiers were wonderful and then today he said in he doubled down on it. He doubled down and said i dont think i said anything wrong. That is hard to take a position. I want to listen to what your former boss at the dnc howard dean said about this earlier today. Oh, no. If the voters can forgive donald trump being corrupt and feathering his own nest for money and they could certainly give joe biden a few laughs as a memory. Trump has lowered the bar. The rules of the game have changed. This is a time when i would have a conversation with him after the fact to say here is the problem. It will matter to voters to to the point it starts to matter. There is a lot of this stuff that we follow very closely where i think it is nuance and people are maybe following it that closely. What you said though, the problem becomes when it is a pattern. And then people are asking themselves well did he forget, was he embellishing and in a general election i worry about is when you are going up against a man who lies prolifically all of the time, i would worry that it would take away one of our best arguments as democrats against trump. If we have to i if if i worry how im going to correct misstatements on our side it makes it harder then to make the argument, well the president is a liar. And what the biden people are saying i talked to somebody this morning is sort of a different version of that. As you could imagine, but it makes sense. Which is this is the way that the former Vice President has always been. It is not an age thing. He tells stories and maybe sometimes he doesnt get the details exactly right but it is authentically him. And that it is baked in and that is the difference between they argue between him and trump is this is authentically who he is and coming out of a place of goodness and not malicious. Im sure donald trump will take it from that good and not malicious place. Yes. I think that is true, dana. Look at joe bidens entire political life. The guy himself acknowledged, im a gaffe machine before he announced. We have that. We could put it up on the screen. There we go. Im a gaffe machine. It is true. This is who he is. That also doesnt mean that thats not potentially a problem for him. One other quick thing, there is it is not equal Donald Trumps 12,000 plus lies and misstatements and joe biden conflating what sounds sounds like two or three remembrances at the same time just because donald trump doesnt tell the truth all of the time doesnt mean that that isnt potentially a problem for joe biden as it relates to authenticity or providing, to caras point, a clear choice. They are not equal. It doesnt mean one doesnt matter. The gaffes aside, it is pretty remarkable how despite all of the arrows that joe biden has taken since he entered the race in april, how resilient he has. So he makes verbal errors and conflates details of stories and hes taken hits from the other candidates and flipflopped on the Hyde Amendment and attacked on trade and the busing issue and the crime bill and yet he still remains at the top of the polls so the ability to beat trump seems to be at the front and foremost of voters minds at this point.
