Nightmare and led to a revolution. Welcome to the lead. Im jake tapper. We begin with the politics lead. President trump this afternoon capping off a wild tweet storm by reacting to newly unsealed mueller evidence that showed that his former National Security adviser, Michael Flynn, aided the Mueller Investigation into potential obstruction of justice, offering evidence that members of the trump team and Congress Reached out to flynn in a way that mueller asserts could have affected both flynns willingness to cooperate and the completeness of that cooperation. Potential witness tampering. Flynn even sharing a voice mail with the mueller team of a possible attempt to interfere with the probe. Now, the president tweeted today, quote, it now seems that general flynn was under investigation long before it was common knowledge. It would have been impossible for me to know this, but if that was the case, and the me being one of two people who would become president , why was i not told so that i could make a change . 54 words, many of them not true. Lets start with, quote, it would have been impossible for me to know this. It was quite possible for President Trump to know flynn was under investigation. In part because Michael Flynn himself warned the trump team about Michael Flynn. In early january, in 2017, before he was appointed, flynn told senior Trump Officials that he was under investigation by the Justice Department for his lobbying work on behalf of the turkish government, to the new york times. Now, it is true that the fbi did not tell trump that flynn was under investigation as part of the Russian Election interference probe. Such a thing could have potentially compromised the investigation. But more broadly, its worth pointing out that in addition to flynn warning the team, there were plenty of other warnings about flynn. Trusted trump adviser and former new Jersey Governor Chris Christie has said he knew flynn was trouble from the day he met him. Against my strong and repeated advice, christie would later write, donald had appointed that walking car crash to be his National Security adviser. I didnt think that he was someone who would bring benefit to the president or to the administration. And i made that very clear to candidate trump and i made it very clear to president elect trump. Why was i not told so i could make a change, the president asked today. Only if someone had told him. Someone like, say, president obama, face to face, less than 48 hours after trump won the presidency. Obama warned trump against hiring flynn during their postelection meeting in the oval office. At least one former Obama Administration official told trump that flynn was not the right person for the job because flynns name kept popping up in the ongoing fbi investigation into russian interference in the 2016 election. Why didnt anyone warn you about flynn, mr. President . Who didnt warn you about flynn . I knows senior White House Correspondent pamela brown takes a look now at how the president is handling all the fallout today from the flynn revelation. President trump today an twitter tirade, complaining again about the origins of the russia investigation, and repeating unfounded claims that his campaign was spied on. Tweeting, quote, treason means long jail sentences and this was treason. Before taking issue with new details surrounding his former National Security adviser, Michael Flynn, saying, quote, it now seems that general flynn was under investigation long before was common knowledge. If that was the case, and with me being one of two people who would become president , why was i not told so i could that make a change . But thats not true. Several people, including president obama, warned trump about hiring flynn when they met in the oval office according to a former Obama Administration official. A couple months later, acting attorney general sally yates warned White House Counsel Don Mcgahn that flynn may have been compromised by the russians. I had two inperson meetings and one phone call with the white House Counsel about mr. Flynn. Reporter newly unsealed Court Documents offer more details about flynns cooperation with the special counsel, Robert Muellers probe. Showing that flynn was one of a select few people in the Trump Campaign who were involved in discussions about whether or not to contact wikileaks regarding stolen Democratic Party emails. Flynn also provided mueller with multiple examples of people potentially attempting to influence his cooperation. A partially redacted court memo reads, quote, either he or his attorneys received communications from persons connected to the administration or congress that could have affected both his willingness to cooperate and the completeness of that cooperation. The defendant even provided a voice mail recording of one such communication. The Mueller Report published that voice mail from the president s personal attorney to flynns attorney. If theres information that implicates the president , then weve got a National Security issue. So, you know, we need some kind of heads up. And despite having the flynn voice mail and other evidence provided by flynn, mueller never prosecuted any members of trumps team, members of congress or congressional staffers for possibly obstructing the investigation by trying to influence flynn. Jake, it is likely that lawmakers would want to ask Robert Mueller this during potential testimony. We know that negotiations have been going on, but a source saying today that its not likely to happen before june. Jake . Pamela brown at the white house. Thanks so much. Appreciate it. Lets chat over all of this with our experts here. Scott, let me start with you. The president did not get a warning from the fbi, hey, this guy is under investigation, because the fbi doesnt do that sort of thing, but he was warned about flynn repeatedly. Yeah, milk was a bad choice. You know always a sucker for anchorman references. Yeah. Look, there were other people who could have filled this job. If we could build a delorean and go back in time, we could prevent this hiring from happening. It happened and hes gone. Its one of those things that i wish we hadnt have done it, but we did it, and theres no way to defend it today. You were shake ying your hea . The idea that it wasnt knowable at the time that he was a train wreck, i think anybody who was paying attention, you didnt need any inside information to see that this was going to be a problem. And we also know that he was warned by lots of different people, by president obama, by chris christie, you know, and other people, like, you dont even need the warning, you just need to be sent yeient and payi attention. And sally yates, she said, this guy is lying to you and we now think he is subject to blackmail by the russians and within a few days, sally yates has been fired, not Michael Flynn. And a lot of this has to do not just that they hired Michael Flynn and he left and they brushed their hands of it. Were seeing what happened when the president and his legal team that has made this still a story in 2019, so much longer. Because of john dowd reaching out with this voice mail, essentially communicating that he does not want Michael Flynn to flip on the president and to reveal any damaging information. Now, whats stopping us from seeing how much further this goes is that john dowd was the president s lawyer, so their conversations were protected by privilege. And of course, the president did not sit for an interview with the special counsel, so the special counsel couldnt have said, hey, did you direct john dowd to call Michael Flynn and leave this voice mail . And laura, lets bring that voice mail up, the transcript, this is what were talking about. If theres information that implicates the president , weve got a National Security issue, so you know we need some kind of heads up. I mean, thats concerning. What National Security issue could there be . I mean, was now know that the president has been essentially cleared of conspiracy with russia. No criminal charges brought against him or anything. What is he talking about . Right. Thats the question and thats why so Many Democrats on capitol hill want to see the underlying evidence of this report. Thats a big piece of it. They want to see the unredacted full report. And its because theres all of this information that no one really knows. And i think that thats the key thing about this filing that was just revealed, is that theres so much more to learn and theres so many cases that mueller handed off, more than 12 or so, that could potentially have more information that comes to light. And kerstin, whats interesting about this, the accusation that people on the trump team or somebody having something to do with congress, whether its a member of congress or a staffer, reaching out to potentially obstruct justice. But nobodys charged. Right well, thats the biggest question when you look at this. Is that this is exactly the kind of behavior that barr described in his testimony, would be obstruction of justice, if it happened. And so why did he look at this and not conclude that this was obstruction of justice . It seems pretty clear when you have people reaching out and trying to influence somebodys testimony that that is de facto obstruction of justice. So why did he why did barr look at this and not conclude well, barr looked at the president s conduct, but i think the question i would have is mueller or the answer that we have is that mueller looked at this and decided not to charge anybody, right . Thats just not true. I cant take it anymore p. I mean what is not true . Its not true that he did not make a decision about charging people. About donald trump. No, no, never made a decision about whether to charge donald trump with obstruction of justice. Right that is something he put in the report. He put all the information i dont think youre disagreeing. I think his point is, he could have charged someone else. He decided because of the olc memo, he wasnt going to do anything about trump. Okay, then i misunderstood you. I thought you meant, since he didnt charge the president with obstruction of justice, then there was no obstruction of justice. No, he said mueller had no compunction about charging other people. But the idea that donald trump didnt know about this is also kind of hard to believe. I mean, hes invoking donald trump. Dowd . Yeah. Hes saying, you know how much donald trump likes you. So, do you think that donald trump didnt know about this . I dont know. Well, if he did, then its obstruction of justice. And the day after that, thats when flynns attorneys called the president s attorneys and said they werent going to be able to talk anymore because of whatever. Then dowd in turn responded, that he was going to have to inform his client about the hostility that mike flynn now felt for him. Bill barr acting like the attorney general President Trump has always dreamed of. What hes saying now that sounds a lot like his boss when it comes to the russia investigation. Plus, senator Bernie Sanders sliding in polls. His new ideas hes rolling out today to try to generate some attention and get that burn back. Stay with us. I dont know. Attorney general william barr repeating the claim that spying occurred on the Trump Campaign and questioning the motives of the fbi officials who launched the initial russia investigation. As cnns Laura Jarrett now reports for us, we know that barrs investigation into the investigators is getting a thumbs up from the big man. I have more questions today than i did when i first started. Reporter more questions than when he started. Attorney general bill barr short on specifics, long on rhetoric today in a pair of interviews on how the russia probe all started. We should be worried about whether government officials abused their power and put their thumb on the scale. And so im not saying that happened. But im saying that we have to look at that. Reporter as the president was tweeting this morning that he was conclusively spied on, barr echoed his boss claims to the wall street journal, saying, quote, government power was used to spy on american citizens. Refusing to delve into the basis for his concern, barr traced over more familiar talking points from trump and his allies, calling into question officials use of the infamous dossier, compiled by an exbritish intelligence officer. Its a very unusual situation to have Opposition Research like that, especially one that on its face had a number of clear mistakes and a somewhat jajun analysis. And to use that to conduct counterintelligence against an american Political Campaign is a strange would be a strange development. Reporter despite the fact that the special counsels report shows the russia investigation wasnt triggered by the dossier. Barr now giving trump an investigation he can get behind. Hes going a great job Getting Started on going back to the origins of the exactly where this all started. Reporter while offering a sympathetic portrayal of a president wrongly accused. If i had been falsely accused, i would be comfortable saying it was a witch hunt. Reporter and even though barrs work is just Getting Started, he told the wall street journal it could ultimately lead to big changes down the line in intelligence collection practices when it comes to Political Campaigns. In that same interview with fox, barr really dismissed claims by some democrats that hes acting more like the president s lawyer than the attorney general, saying they may just be worried what his investigation will turn up. Jake . Hmm. Laura jarrett at the doj, thanks so much. Lets chew over this. Kaitlan collins, let me start with you. How are barrs comments at fox news being received at the white house. Comments like that, like the democrats being worried about the outcome of his probe are exactly what the president wants to see his attorney general saying. He has never been more pleased with someone than he has with bill barr. He often tells people, thank god we finally have a real attorney general. And you can see why when you watch these interviews. Because bill barr goes out there and says he doesnt think the president was wrong to call it a witch hunt, because he says he was falsely accused, so he says he understands what the president says, even when thats a space where some other Officials Say they wouldnt use terms like that. Bill barr is exactly the kind of person the president wants to see making comments like that in interviews. And its why democrats also feel that hes working at the behest of the president. Its why Kamala Harris asked him during his testimony, has anyone in the administration suggested that you open an investigation into the origins of the counterintelligence probe . And why barr had trouble answering her. And she also sent a followup letter, which barr has not responded to so far. Interesting. Barr told the wall street journal, origins of the russia probe could lead to rule changes. He also said, quote, government power was used to spy on american citizens. The framing of all of this is interesting, because the government uses its power to spy on american citizens all the time, thousands and thousands of times a day. But hes not talking about defending look, this is the mueller goes into a lot of things, including stuff that you like, but also, all the reasons why there was an investigation. I mean, all the efforts by the russians to interfere. I mean, he sort of puts them on par, you know, saying, if youre concerned about Foreign Government interfering hour election, you should be concerned about what the fbi did. And it was like, those arent really the same thing. Like you said, the fbi actually does do this all the time. And its completely legal. So, you know, they had a reason to be concerned. You had a Campaign Adviser who had information about russian hacking before it was made public, george papadopoulos. And so this was something that would reasonably get their attention. And so, i dont think that its so outlandish. And now we now know of all these contacts that was happening. So its not outlandish that they would investigate this. So i think hes kind of bidding. I dont think this is serious. Scott, the attorney general said about the steele dossier, its very odd for Opposition Research to be used to launch an investigation. I dont know how unusual it is or not, but i do know that a book against Hillary Clinton, peter schweitzer, funded by the merce mercers, in partnership with steve bannon, like, that was one of the reasons the Hillary Clinton investigation was launched. People in the fbi saw this book, saw all of these allegations and said, we need to look into it. So its not that unusual at least in terms of recent memory investigations of recent figu figures. Yeah, i dont know how unusual it is historically. I supported the idea that we needed a Mueller Investigation to find out what russia did. And i support the idea that we need a barr, fbi, ig, whatever you want to call it investigation to find out all this other stuff too. They are not the same thing, but they are equally important. I think if everything was done correctly and we find that out, we will rejoice for knowing that our Law Enforcement community and this organization and the Intelligence Community acted appropriately. And if there need to be policy changes, well have that ptoo. I dont know why anyone would be worried about that. Ive always been skeptical of the fbi. Ive never been onboard with the idea that they were above reproach. But when you listen to the idea of how hes coabroaching this, s talking about like he cares about fbi. And now youre sigaying, im concerned about the fbi because of surveillance that happened decades ago. Its hard to take seriously. And the question is, what happens with the outcome . Because people close to the president say hes already made up his mind about what happened and the outcome of the investigation, if it clears the fbi, is not going to change the president s mind. Okay, everybody stick around, three weeks in leading in all the polls, joe biden is already starting a new chapter in his campaign. Stay with us. Maria ramirez . Hi. Senator Bernie Sanders wiswingi through the south, hoping to shore up support as he finds himself in unfamiliar territory, slipping in the poles. As cnns ryan nobles now reports, Bernie Sanders now rolling out some new policies to show hes not going anywhere. Reporter Bernie Sanders is hitting the road. Thank you North Carolina embarking on a fourstate southern swing at a time where his campaign is dealing with something new. A drop in the polls. Two new polls show sanders losing ground on the frontrunner, joe biden. In a new fox news poll, sanders dropping six points from the same survey in march, a cnn poll at the end of april shows a drop of four points. Still, sanders remains locked in a solid second place and aides say the senator is not worried. Instead, they say hes playing a long, steady game. His trip to the deep south is evidence of that. On saturday, sanders will roll out a comprehensive education policy, calling for an end to forprofit Charter Schools and a full moratorium on the funding of all Charter School expansion until a massive audit can take place. Hell be the first 2020 candidate to take that step. The policy rollout comes on the 65th anniversary of the brown versus board of Education Supreme Court decision and with a specific message about the impact Charter Schools have head on the black community. Let us be clear. When we fight for justice, that means ending institutional racism in every aspect of our lives. Reporter as sanders tours the south, iowa is busy. Its the first stop for de blasio as the big city mayor attempts to convince rural voters that he understands their needs. Its all about working people and it doesnt matter if youre in gary, iowa, or youre in new york city. It just doesnt matter. Reporter and all of the campaigning comes as the democratic field continues to respond to the moves to restrict Abortion Access across several states. Senator Elizabeth Warren today calling for new federal laws to protect the practice. And sanders trip through the south will be in four states that are very crucial in this upcoming election. Of course, south carolina, an early vote primary state. But North Carolina and alabama will vote on super tuesday. And all four of these states, when you include georgia, are states that voted for donald trump in 2016. Jake . All right, ryan, thank you so much. Lets talk about this with the experts. Laura, let me start with you. Senator sanders slipped in the last cnn poll, also. Take a look at the candidates momentum in this new poll from fox news. Sanders has lost more support than any other candidate. Hes down six percentage points. Pete buttigieg, Elizabeth Warren, joe biden on the rise. What do you think he needs to do to stop the slide . I think that theres big differences, right, from 2016 versus now, one being that Elizabeth Warren is in the race. Theyre really similar when it comes to their policies and shes also outpaced him when it comes to releasing very specific policy, progressive policy proposals detailing how shes going to pay for everything. She just came out with an abortion one today. So i think that were seeing him trying to play catchup with her and realizing that it isnt as easy as it was in 2016 to just paint himself as the sole progressive running against the establishment candidate. Yeah. And sanders criticized biden from almost the moment biden entered the race. Now were seeing other candidates following his lead, taking on bidens policy positions. Take a listen. Haha, no. I dont think that joe is the most progressive candidate in this race. Would you have voted for nafta . I would not have voted for nafta. We cannot have a middle ground proposal to build a clean energy future. Bidens now going to start rolling out some policies, but that might actually expose him to even more criticism. Thats the question here. The Trump Campaign actually wants this messaging to be out there. They want people like Bernie Sanders or people who have not just center left but farleft proposals to be the ones, so then when it actually gets to the democratic candidate versus the republican candidate, then that person will look better and they can point back to what theyve said throughout this entire process. Thats why theyre worried about people like joe biden, because thats someone who they think could win over someone who voted for trump in 2016. They dont think someone who voted for hillary will be switching their votes. Today Kerstin Gillibrand rolled out new proposals, she wants to expand access to reproductive care. Do you think all of these laws, and i think missouri became the eighth or ninth state to pass a new ban on most abortions in the state, do you think all of these laws are actually motivating democratic voters . Yeah, i think theyre as activated as they could possibly be. Because and i think even in the prolife community, you see people saying that these are two these laws are too extreme. You had Pat Robertson saying this law is too extreme the alabama law, because theres no exceptions for rape and incest. But i also think its what the prochoice community has been warning is coming down the pike and everybody has been saying they were crazy. So this is actually, you know, something that i think is going to be an extremely important issue in this in the race. And look, republicans wanted abortion to be an issue in this race. They were already, you know, spending a lot of time talking about the new york abortion law. And so this is something that they want. I think its going to be something that they may end up to regret. Yes, it will activate their voters, but i think the way its going to really activate democratic voters is going to not work for them. You had the chairwoman of the Republican National committee, Ronna Mcdaniel say that she would have supported an alabama law that had exemptions for rape and incest, which the alabama law does not. Are you concerned as a republican who wants republican turnout and doesnt want democratic turnout that these laws, because they are extreme, bold, whatever you want to look for, they might actually motivate democrats more. For as long as aive been in republican politics, its been the standard position and i think thats where most republican candidates are going to come down regardless of where these individual state laws come down. I see the extremist rhetoric and the extremist policies, though, hurting democrats as much as republicans, when you consider the 40week abortion laws, no h northams comments and a party that seems to have been hijacked by these extreme abortion activists. And so for as much as democrats are crowing about what republicans are doing, i think republican voters, evangelical christians are going to be as motivated as ever because they feel like they have been relegated to the sidelines and they finally feel like this is our moment where the prolife moment can speak and they have a president who is allowing them to do that. I have to say my thing just fell. But i dont think anybodys really crowing. I actually think people are pretty alarmed about whats going on. So i think that its not just a political issue. I think that people are really concerned about these laws and the harm that they could cause. I do think the democrats have a problem in the sense that the republicans have muddied the waters about these abortion laws, like in new york, and are really presented them as something that theyre just not, you know . Well, theyre calling them infantici infanticide. Right, that its an abortion freeforall when in fact its just leaving exemptions for health, life of the mother, and fetal nonviability. So this is what democrats are having to wage this bamt against what is really a misinformation campaign. And we havent heard the white house embrace the law one way or the other. Thats because the president has kind of kept his distance from reporters in recent days, as far as questions. I was traveling with him to new york yesterday. He did not speak to reporters on the way out or when he was boarding air force one two times when he typically does take questions. Because that is the thing. What does the president have to say about this. Someone at time who was a democrat, what does he have to say about it . I do think judging by the conversations that weve heard from the white house, ronna m mcdaniel this morning saying that she does think it should go too far. Ill just say, House Minority leader kemvin mccarthy also sai he thought the alabama law went too far, but there were a number of rank and file members this week who didnt know how to answer this question. Breaking news now in our money lead with the deadline for the department of the treasury to hand over six years of President Trumps tax returns, literally just minutes away, secretary of the treasury, Steve Mnuchin just defied the subpoena and told house democrats, youre not getting them. And now its likely heading to court. Its a fitting way to plug a special tonight on erin burnett about how the trump family makes its money. Heres a sneak preview. Its estimated that Trump University brought in about 40 million and trump got around 5 million. It was pretty good money for trump. It was pretty good. Reporter but eventually, there were multiple lawsuits and it ended up a big money loser for trump. So when they come to settle, i said, im not going to settle. Reporter after he won the election, he settled for 25 million. We got back around 35,000. Reporter but thats just a quarter of what beth wood says she lost. 70 grand on seminars and web nars and another 80 grand on rental properties recommended by her Trump University mentor. I hold donald j. Trump personally responsible for this scam. And cnns erin burnett joins me now. Erin, thanks so much. Congrats on the special. Let me ask you, President Trumps annual Financial Disclosure was released last night. It shows his d. C. Hotel brought in more than 40 million in revenue last year. Is there any evidence that hes giving to the treasury all the funds from the foreign leaders staying at his hotels, as he promised he would . Okay, so, you know, i guess youve got to take him at his word, jake. So he literally, as you say, 40 million, just over 40 million from that hotel alone. So the Trump Organization says, look, we have written a check. We have decided to write a check to the United States treasury for all the Trump Properties. So not just that hotel, any other property that there is a profit from a Foreign Government or anybody theby say for last year. That number was 191,000. That doesnt sound it doesnt, but there would be no way to know, because they dont told you who stayed there, they dont tell you how they define a foreign profit or any of the above. So the information we have is extremely limited. But in that hotel alone, right, you had a lobbying group affiliated with saudi arabia paying 300,000, just to that hotel alone. But again, the overall check cut to the treasury for all Trump Properties profits from Foreign Government was only 191,000 last year. So the president famously vowed that he would put his business interests in a blind trust. Its pretty clear that didnt happen, i guess, right . Right, no. It didnt. In fact, his lawyers admit, jake, and this is pretty amazing, they admit that he can take money from his trust at any time. So as president of the United States, he can take money from it at any time. And as you know, we just learned, he made what im sorry, revenue of 343 million. We dont know how much he made or how much debts he has or anything like that. But in terms of that trust, the president of the United States can take money from it at any time, even though we, the american people, do not necessarily know where that money comes from. Even the commercial rents that he may make from big buildings in new york city, you know what, we dont know everybody whos paying those rents. Bank of china, other Foreign Governments, we just dont know. And erin, of all of the potentially glaring conflicts of interest that the president has in other countries, what did you find in your investigation that surprised you the most . You know, jake, what was really interesting . Was india. Not everyone is aware that india is so important for the Trump Organization, it is huge. It is the single Biggest Country outside the United States for the Trump Organization. Donald trump jr. Went there and, you know, hes gone to promote literally these five buildings. Theyre all licensed properties. And you know what, jake, if you paid 39,000 for a down payment on an apartment there, you got a meeting with donald trump jr. Donald trump jr. , who tweets on behalf of his father, appears at Campaign Events on behalf of his father, you could get that meeting. And by the way, if you got a mortgage, we know who you are buying those properties, but if you didnt and you paid cash, we have no idea who those people are funneling money right now into the Trump Organization. Unbelievable. Congratulations on the special. I cant wait to see it. Thanks, jake. Do not miss the new documentary, the trump family business, hosted by erin burnett, premieres tonight at 9 00 p.
