Were the second worst day of the year as of right now. Heavy selling throughout the day. And lets just put some context around this. The selling really started last week. Take a look at this chart. Were down over 4 right now. This is a clear message from investors to donald trump, they do not think its going to be okay, they dont agree with this tactic of using tariffs. They think that its going to hurt the domestic economy and slow down the global economy. This is going to wreak havoc on Business Confidence and it also is going to impose higher costs on consumers, despite what the president has been putting out there. Its the u. S. Consumer that pays the price here, jake. And rana, what do you make of the timing of this . Obviously, china could have retaliated over the weekend, they did so today, causing these jitters on wall street. Yeah, absolutely. I think that this is china saying, look, were not backing down. And really, this is an existential issue for them. This is not just pant buying soybeans from america. This is about the Trump Administration saying, look, we want you to fundamentally change the way you do business. We want you to not subsidize stateowned industries. We want you to privatize. Thats not the chinese system, thats not the direction theyre going, and i think if something doesnt change, i think were in for a very long haul here. And chris tthe u. S. And chin nowhere near a deal. And the big question right now is whether or not trump will go ahead and impose tariffs on an additional 300 billion of chinese goods. That is a big question. But the irony here is that trump keeps hitting chairman fed customary Jerome Powell for causing market declines. This, todays selling is all trumps doing. And ironically, it actually might force the fed to lower Interest Rates if these fears of a global slowdown persist. Jake . And rana, the president tweeted today in part, quote, there is no reason for the u. S. Consumer to pay the tariffs, which take effect on china today. Arent tariffs typically imposed on businesses that then directly pass on the cost to the consumer . Thats exactly right. The last round of tariffs were mostly eaten by businesses. They lost, but they didnt pass that on to the consumer. This time around, its going to be different. A lot of analysts are saying we could see as much as 800 a year per family additional in costs in everything from furniture to clothing to white goods. And that doesnt even take into account the market affect that cristina was talking about, when the markets drop, you have a sense of insecurity and that makespeop people button up thei wallets. Bill kristol, the president says theres no reason for the u. S. Consumer to pay the tariffs, but he was obviously contradicted to a degree by his top economic adviser, larry kudlow. So, why is the president not being as honest and upfront as larry kudlow was when he said, yes, of course, theres going to be pain on both sides. Theres already quite a lot of economic activist that trumps protectionist policies are hurting American Consumers and american farmers. And so far hes managed to sort of, i dont know, convince people to accept it or not to that its not real. He doesnt seem to be paying much political price. My sense is that i dont know if a lot of Trump Supporters out there have decided that its going to go away soon, the price will go away soon or its not real or its worth paying or its just the liberal media talking about it. Reality has to hit. At the end of the day, one person can say this, another person can say that. Will farm prices really be now, will people be paying noticeably more because of chinese tariffs. Thats the real question a year from now. And some 2020 democrats, joe biden and Kamala Harris among them, have been critical of President Trumps approach. Take a listen. The way we have to proceed is we have to have our allies with us. Its not just us. We have to keep the rest of the world together. Working with our allies to address china, in terms of the threat that it presents to our economy, the threat it presents to American Workers and american industries. So theyre not saying that the president s wrong for taking on china, theyre just saying that the president s essentially going it alone. Well, and that theres a danger, i think, of going it alone, given the danger that china poses. To what bill was just saying, the economic impact, why should we believe that china is going to pay for it . Like, mexico is not paying for the wall. China not going to make up the difference. And when people do start to feel it, there will be a real potential economic cost. I think that theres also a cost in the insecurity and instability. And i think thats something that both Kamala Harris and joe biden were talking about, that when youre acting with your allies, then youre putting on a unified front, then theres less of this diplomacy by tweet. The president sort of said yesterday, he tweeted, you better not do anything, its going to be okay, and the chinese basically refuted that and made it very clear, they are going to retaliate. So i dont think theres any reason to believe that what the president is doing is going to work. Hes said himself, hes the king of debt, he likes to play debt and take risks. We saw that frankly with the government shutdown. So again, i think this is going to breed insecurity, not more confidence in his policies. And jeff zeleny, youve been to farm country recently, youve been to iowa. The last time Something Like this went on, the president pledged 12 billion to help struggling farmers. Hes talking about 15 billion. Is that helping the farmers get through this . No. Its a small price for everyone whos receiving this aid. And farmers across the world for years are not looking for aid, theyre looking for better prices for their goods. So up until now, Trump Supporters have been incredibly trusting of the president and patient of the president. We will see if that lasts. Theres some compounding things going on. A, the floods have that be happening in iowa. The Soybean Prices are at 1981 or so pricing. So well see how long people are believing in the president. I thought he said something very interesting this afternoon in the oval office. He said, i love the position we are in. To me, that sounded like, buckle up. Sort of, were in for the long haul here. So well see how it evolves over the summer. Its planting season. This is a time when farmers are thinking about all of this. And some democrats on capitol hill are applauding what the senate is doing. Chuck schumer telling him to hang tough on china. Whats interesting here is that this is kind of a progress iive protectionist way to go about this policy and he has all of these republicans going along with it. I think that the president did very much campaign on this isolationist trade agenda and hes in many ways acting upon what he said he would. I think there are some more opposition when youre talking about more traditional u. S. Allies like canada and others in europe, but with china, theres been a lot more bipartisan consensus that beijing needs to be held accountable for what are unfair trade practices. So the question is, how do you do it . I think there is some concern on both sides of the aisle that the route the president has chosen does risk a global trade war. And that the people who are ultimately being hurt are actually American Consumers as well as the manufacturing and agricultural industry. So whether this will have an impact on him, that remains to be seen, but ironically, trying to protect the American Worker from trade dealss he says hurts him, hes risking ramifycatiica. And china threatened new tariffs on cotton, cornflower, furniture, aircraft parts, and as ryan young now reports from illinois, the retaliation is a punch in the gut to u. S. Heartland with manufacturing and farming taking the hardest hit. Reporter jim xian says the tariffs are reducing the revenue by 30 . Its hitting us in the pocketbook. Reporter other farmers are much more critical of President Trump. The president is playing footsie with china while americas farmers are on the losing end of the stick. And quite frankly, i dont know why more midwestern farmers are not outraged. Reporter the trade wars are taking a toll on farmers already hit hard by low Commodity Prices and devastating floods across the midwest. Theres been a wave of farmers declaring chapter 12 bankruptcy. Here in the midwest, district of illinois, wisconsin, and indiana, the number of those farm bankruptcy cases doubled in ten years, according to the district 7 appeals court. Jim schielen says theyre taking extreme measures to survive. You really tighten the belt on your expenses. This equipment wears out. Its complex. Reporter the hope for some in the farm belt is that the tariffs go away, the trade war ends, and farmers are no longer caught in a global cross fire. Jake, you can see, soybeans like this are worth billions of dollars to our economy. And youve got to think about this farmers are looking for some sort of relief, because this really equals to what they can put on their kitchen table. And a lot of them are hurting right now, so the conversation about tariffs and negotiation, thats one thing, but theyre really feeling it in their pockets. Ryan young in dixon, illinois. Were learning new details about that subpoena from the republicanled Senate Intelligence committee of donald trump junior. Two sources telling cnn that donald trump junior is balking at answering anymore questions about two topics in particular, the nowinfamous june 2016 trump tower meeting and talks about a potential trump tower project in moscow. Cnns kara scannel joins me now breaking this news. Why is he objecting to this . Essentially, according to sources, don junior doesnt want to have a complete doover of his testimony from december 2017, when he met with the Senate Intelligence committee and to other committees, discussing these topics, including the trump tower meeting and the trump tower moscow discussions to develop a project there. Now, the issues here is that were learning some new information that chairman richard burr of the Senate Intelligence committee has told some of his members and colleagues that they initially began these conversations with donald trump jr. s team back in december. That there were tentative agreements for don junior to come in and meet with them in april, but then those talks fell apart after it was clear that the Senate Intelligence committee didnt want to place any limitations on their discussions with donald trump jr. They had provided his legal team with a list of 20 topics they wanted to discuss, with no agreements to limit in any way the scope or the length of the time that he would be questioned. And that was something that don juniors lawyers objected to. They thought when they had some follow up questions that it meant that he would come in for an hour or two hours, but then it began to appear that this was going to be a long openended session with some of the members in themselves being able to appear. This led to burrs Committee Voting to issue this subpoena. And now were at a bit of a standoff. The next move is really back to chairman burr and is he going to seek to compel donald trump jr. To come in, because they really dont seem to be able to reach an agreement on don junior answering either of those topics, jake . Kara scannel bringing us the breaking news. Sabrina, let me start with you. What do you make of this . Why not answer questions about this if theres nothing to hide . Well, thats the question precisely for donald trump jr. And thats why the Committee Wants him to come back in. Because he had testified privately before congress before and weve seen transcripts of some of those conversations. And really, at the heart of this is trump tower meeting in june of 2016, which don junior himself set up when he was offered dirt on Hillary Clinton and then negotiations on trump tower, moscow, and he had told the committee that he was only peripherally aware of those negotiations. Michael cohen,s trumps former personal attorney testified that he actually briefed don junior maybe ten times on those negotiations. Thats a question before him although just to interject quickly, Michael Cohen is not the most credible witness. Hes not the most credible witness, but thats a question to be answered by don junior, to explain that discrepancy. And wether or not he told his father about that trump tower meeting in june of 2016. And there are some indications that perhaps there were conversations between don junior and his father about the nature of that meeting. He told the committee he did not does it at all with his father. And mueller and his teem declined to bring any charges against donald trump jr. They did say when talking with that lawyer, it was, a, it wasnt clear that donald trump jr. Knew it was inappropriate. And hay got nothing of value. Thats why they didnt go forward with any charges. But he had been basically, essentially cleared as far as no charges brought, but now we have all of this controversy. We do, but the scope of the investigation is different. This isnt a court of law or bringing charges. This is something that really of all of the investigations in washington, the most measured one, at least, it seems, from the outside, has been that senate investigation. This is something that it seems to me that senator burr and senator warner on the Committee Want to put a bow on something. But when you have others on capitol hill like senator Lindsey Graham and others essentially saying, ignore this subpoena, it does make you wonder exactly, is there more there . There may not be more there. It may just be, im sort of a bit of paperwork, but it seems to me since hooe one of the few not up for reelection, the republicans here, this is going to be fascinating. He has not spoken about this at all. Well see if he holds to his guns and makes him come up there. And lets just talk about that. Because senator Lindsey Graham, republican of south carolina, chairman of the Senate Judiciary committee, indeed, as jeff said, advised that donald trump junior not comply with a subpoena from his senate colleague, republican colleague. Take a listen. As i understand it, this subpoena relates to what Michael Cohen said about some meetings and about the trump tower in russia. And if i were donald trump jr. s lawyer, i would tell them, you dont need to go back into this environment anymore. Youve been there for hours and hours and hours, and nothing being alleged here changes the outcome of the mueller investigation. I would call it a day. Thats the exact opposite of his position during clinton impeachment, when he said, its important to comply with subpoenas. This is a subpoena from the Senate Intelligence committee. Lindsey graham is not on that committee. He doesnt know, actually, what senator burr and his colleagues think they need to find out. And incidentally, i think all the republican colleagues of senator burr on that committee, the partial exception of john cornyn have been quiet or are supported senator burr. So all of these people taking cheap shots from the galleries, they dont know it, might be a bow, but could be something important. The Senate Intelligence committee isnt a frivolous group of people. They have serious staff. Senator burr doesnt just wander out and say, i would like to get a little more detail from this guy. They may have something serious they would like to find out, not about the legal question of conspiracy, but about the clenl counterintelligence issues. And i want to play this sound, karen, its President Trump today answering questions about whether or not he would ever commit to using money from a foreign adversary. Take a listen. Well, i never did use, as you probably know. Thats what the Mueller Report was always about. They said, no collusion, and i would certainly agree to that. I dont need it. He cited wikileaks and the stolen materials, he would read from the wikileaks, the stolen materials, all the time at rallies. And ask people to get more of it, if they could. And the special counsel certainly made that very clear. You know, i think what youre seeing is really important. Theres so much we dont know. And for barr to take the extraordinary step of a subpoena, clearly, the negotiations broke down burr sorry, wrong one. I would suggest thats more than putting a bow on something, when you consider there are 14 case still out there that mueller referred that do potentially have to do with National Security and intelligence matters. So i think the level of seriousness is such that, first of all, we know President Trump lice a lies all the time and now clearly don junior has been caught potentially lying and it could be something related to our National Security. Well, we dont know that donald trump junior in terms of well, there are inconsistencies, put it that way. Okay, but okay, anyway. Moments ago, President Trump praising an farright nationalist, who he invited to the oval office, even as his fellow republicans and human Rights Groups slammed the european leaders abuses. A United Nations report this month said Asylum Seekers in hungary are immediately detained and some even, quote, deliberately deprived of food, unquote. But today, President Trump applauded the hungarian leader saying according to many people, arbann is tough and has done the right thing on immigration. As Kaitlan Collins now explains, Amnesty International has another word for those policies. Draconian. 20 years ago, first time here. Reporter the last time hundred karyn Prime Minister victor orban met one on one a american president , bill clinton was in office. Well, i am delighted to welcome Prime Minister orban. Reporter but orban, heavily criticized by human rights organizations, returned to the white house. Its a great honor to have with us the Prime Minister of hungary. Reporter both president s george w. Bush and president obama shunned orban, who was once seen as a promising reformer. His reputation changed as he pulled his nation closer to china and erected a razor wire fence. Probably like me, a little bit controversial, but thats okay. Thats okay. Youve done a good job. And youve kept your country safe. Reporter under his leadership, Amnesty International has criticized hungary for its systemic crackdown on the rights of refugees and migrants, its rollback on human rights, instances of excessive use of force by police at the border, and insufficient recognition and prosecution of rape and other forms of sexual violence. President , thank you very much for the invitation. Reporter in a speech last year, orban said, we do not want to be diverse and we do not want to be mixed. We do not want our own color, traditions, and National Culture to be mixed with those of others. Last week, a Bipartisan Group of senators on the Foreign Relations committee warned trump that under orban, democracy in hungary has significantly eroded. But Officials Say his meeting with trump was a hard get. Orban was the first foreign leader to endorse trump in 2016, but hes the last from Central Europe to secure a white house invite. The Administration Says the meeting is part of a bigger strategy to distance hungary from russia and china. Yet the meeting raises questions about which leaders trump is willing to cultivate. I know hes a tough man, but hes a respected man. Reporter according to steve bannon, the two have a lot no common. I can tell, victor orban triggers them like trump. He was trump before trump. Now, that praise you heard from President Trump for the hungarian Prime Minister today, jake, is exactly what with the president s advisers were worried about that, that he would seem too chummy or have too much advice for him. A leader theyre trying to keep at arms length. Lets talk about this with the experts. According to Kaitlan Collins, a white house adviser didnt want him to appear too chummy. And normally if someone met with orban, there would be background briefings in private, at least, the u. S. President would have urged orban to let up on his attempts to curb the free media, to curb economic freedom, to stop the courts from reviewing cases and so forth. Its a pretty systemic, gradual, not grotesque, but gradual authoritarianism in hungary by orban, who was a key figure in the democracization in 89 and the early years he really turned in this direction. But one has no impression that donald trump said a word that might slow orban down in his authoritarian tendencies. Everything and that people accuse President Trump of doing and they can be quite hyperbolic sometimes, orban is actually doing and the president in his comments risks giving orban cover, by saying, were both controversial, as if orban is just the same as President Trump. He risks giving him cover in a platform and a sea approval. Thats what we saw happen right there in the oval office. This meeting didnt just happen because the president wanted. Theres been a systemic campaign by the government of hungry, hiring u. S. Lobbyists, including a former florida member of congress, connie mack, who worked for the hungary government who tried to, a, first set up a phone call between orban and the president back in 2016. So everything sort of led to this meeting. This is the latest in a series of examples that the president is very willing to have, because it makes him look strong as well. Which connie mack, member of the house or the senate . Member of the house. He was a registered lobbyist for hungary, which is totally legal and fine. But that is one of the backstories, the backdrops of how this meeting came to be here. But certainly you cant see any other president doing that, because that hasnt happened. He hasnt gotten that type of meeting and a red carpet as he had today. And today the Prime Minister, sabrina, made a point to say, hechhe was proud to stand with the u. S. , quote, on fighting on illegal immigration. Just like President Trump, victor orban has taken a sharply antiimmigration view, and he is one of the most prominent nationalists in europe, which is why its so striking that he would have an audience with the president of the United States and that he would be invited to personally come to the white house. Hes made comments, orban, that people have said are antisemitic, that are islamic nobodyick, hes gone to war with the media and a lot like President Trump, he also has cozied up to Vladimir Putin and isolated himself with more traditional u. S. Allies. So i think to Steve Bannons point, this is someone that trump does have a lot in common with. But it is remarkable, yet again, that the president would be willing to host a leader that many people have said is more authoritarian, and in many ways, its part of a pattern that the president has expressed an affinity for authoritarian tendencies himself. And he tends to act as though he does not operate with the kind of understanding to the you know, this is what it means to be nontraditional, like you said. There was no private meeting where he might have said, hey, you know, you can make it a little easier for me to host you if you can just back off a little bit. No, to him, i suspect that he might have asked him for some advice. The way he praised him publicly, it does sort of begin to devalue the importance of americas moral leadership in the world, if youre going to be seen as praising putin, cozying up with people like orban. And thats part of the trend weve seen in the trump presidency. And especially in central and eastern europe. Where there are a lot of countries that are sort of on the bubble. They liberalized, they seemed to be sort of on a good path to democracy. Theres a backslide in hungary, thats backslid the most. Poland is a little bit iffy, other places. There are a lot of people in those countries who are themselvesic icacalculating. And this pays the signal, you pay no price for going down the authoritarian road. The u. S. , which has always been the thats always been the good argument for democrats in those countries. Youre going to damage relations with the United States of america if you go in this way. So maybe you dont even understand the moral arguments and the other arguments for liberal democracy. But its going to hurt you, trump has really damaged the people who should be our friends. And the u. S. Ambassador to hungary raised some eyebrows. He was asked about the description of hungary as a, quote, ill liberal democracy. And he reportedly said, quote, i can tell you, knowing the president for a good 25 to 30 years, that he would love to have the situation that victor orban does, but he doesnt. And now the white house is saying, that was taken out of context, and maybe he meant it jokingly, but trump has talked about it openly. He touts that as his contribution, as opposed to westerntile liberal democracy. That very much is a central theme of every one of his rallies. And i expect it will be coming ahead for the next 16 months or so. Everyone, stick around. Reporter bidens first trip to New Hampshire comes as he leads his rivals in the state by double digits, earning 36 of support in a recent poll here, followed by Bernie Sanders at 18 . Reporter meanwhile, Bernie Sanders ready to promote his work on the Green New Deal as hes set to appear with alexandria ocasiocortez for the second time in a week. And josh, biden will round out his threeweek roll out with a big speech in philadelphia on saturday. Arlette saenz in New Hampshire, thank you so much. You heard how soft the 2020 democrats are adjusting their strategies now that biden is in the race. Is that smart to readjust now that biden is doing so well . Theyre just trying to get attention first and foremost. Joe biden has done one thing well so far which is to take a lot of oxygen out of the race and to reassure people, he may be the person theyre waiting for. One thing i was struck by when i was out there, i was with the former Vice President earlier this week in iowa. There was this air of nostalgia. Which in most normal cases, you think, most elections are not about looking behind, but looking forward. But democrats are happy to see someone as a lifeline. I think his challenge is to still maintain this lead and at some point, he will have to say what he is for in todays party about the Green New Deal, medicare for all, all things. Up until now, hes been able to run a rose garden strategy without the rose garden, but he doesnt have that, so hell have to get knocked up a little bit. But his early rollout, without question, has been very good. And David Axelrod said, told the new york times, clearly, theyre trying to do enough to show the flag, but not so much i want exposes him to either mistakes or fatigue, but the pace is going to quicken as the race goes on and you cant keep him in candidate protection program. Apparently, there is this whole concern about how to make sure he doesnt have a gaffe and or gaffes. Staff people are always a little bit afraid of what are the voters going to ask . He obviously did just fine. And what jeff mentioned is really important. There is something about biden, theres a nostalgia, and when ive talked to voters, hes calming. And its so frenetic right now with President Trump. Think about how we started talking about today, talking about china and all of this anxiety about whats going to happen in the market. Theres something about biden that just says, you know, we could have a president that wouldnt make us anxious all the time. And i think he reminds people what it was like to have a president like that in barack obama and i think hes look, hes going to have his gaffes. They all are going to have their gaffes. I think the key for him is to make sure that if he does, that they can correct it pretty quickly. You can see him working the crowd there. He seemed to do quite well. He knew how to take a selfie. Progress. Hes been doing selfies for a while. But selfie culture on the campaign trail is really important to people. And the fact that he is he did fine answering questions. Sabrina, he is not only is he not the most progress i have candidate in the race, Bernie Sanders is completely right, hes to the right of the Democratic Base on a lot of issues, maybe not as much as everyone thought, i have to say, given how well hes doing in the polls, but when Bernie Sanders lays out in the debates in june and july about the iraq war, about nafta, when Elizabeth Warren comes at him about credit card companies, that will take some of the shine off, i think. Maybe . I think so. I think theres a case to be made that its very early and with the exception of Bernie Sanders, joe biden is the most wellknown entity in the field. I think the supportive goes beyond name recognition and the numbers indicate that biden has a strong base of support. The real test will be when hes standing up there on the debate stage and you see the other candidates relitigate his record. But hes also not someone you would call an outright centrist. Hell be able to stand up there and say, the Obama Administration negotiated the paris climate accord. Hell be able to say, we passed obamacare and that thats the baseline as far as im concerned and i do still believe there should be a public option in terms of medicare. Hell also be able to stand thereupon and say weve called for a 15 minimum wage that he has embraced four years of free college tuition. So i think he actually has stood up behind some progressive principles. The real question will not necessarily be, you know, whether or not joe biden is progressive n ivive enough, but or not these issues will be a lit must test for the base, but whether or not its something weve spent a lot of time focusing on. And democrats in the last few decades win when they put the company forward. But generally speaking, and donald trump is the oldest president and hes about the past, not about the future in a lot of ways. Is that not a hindrance . Is that not a problem this year or next year . I would have thought so, but were in unusual times. Our friend, the republican pollster, wrote a book three, four years ago about her fellow millennials called the selfie generation. Joe biden will turn out to be the political embodiment of the selfie generation. I thought that in 2015. Im writing editorials saying, finally, the democrats will have the young candidate. Scott walker, marco rubio, ted cruz, bobby jindal, that worked out great. We got another baby boomer in trump. And finally democrats this time said, okay, last time, we cant have another election with baby boomers. Is biden even older than a baby boomer . Hes like the previous generation.
