Stories unfolding today. All of them, frankly, bad news for President Trump. President trump experiencing major challenges abroad as his presidency is under siege at home, hours after the president walked out of his muchhyped second summit with north koreas kim jongun. Today his former fixer is testifying yet again on capitol hill. Yesterday cohen delivered a brutal testimony, calling the president a racist and conman, who directed many of the crimes that cohen committed. Of course, he has credibility issues and is going to prison, in part, for having previously lied to congress. He provided House Democrats with a long list of potential crimes and schemes to investigate and future witnesses to grill. The president has, of course, been more focused recently on the Nuclear Threat posed by north korea the last few days and now says hes involved in trying to pull two other countries with nukes back from the brink. India and pakistan. Were following all three of these critically important stories, from india to vietnam. President trump is currently on his way back to hanoi after that abrupt ending to his summit with kim jongun and a press conference that had to be moved up after the collapse of the talks, the president defended his decision. President trump telling the world he does not hold kim jongun responsible for the torture and ultimate death of an American College student, Otto Warmbier after kim, human rights abuser, denied knowing about his treatment. Warmbier, arrested for a petty crime, died days after being released. He entered a healthy Young College student. He was returned in a coma. President trump said this of the man ultimately responsible for warmbiers death. He felt badly. He knew the case very well but knew it later. He tells me he didnt know about it and i will take him at his word. I will take him at his word, the president says, just like he took the word of the saudi crown prince, Mohammed Bin Salman, denying involvement in the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi and just like he took the word of Vladimir Putin when he denied being involved in the u. S. President ial election. Kaitlan collins starts off our coverage. Im never afraid to walk away from a deal. Reporter thats exactly what President Trump did today, leaving vietnam without a deal and on an empty stomach after talks with the north Korean Leader fell apart. Canceling lunch in a joint signing ceremony after a standoff in their Second Nuclear summit. Basically they wanted the sanctions lifted in their entirety and we couldnt do that. They were willing to denuke a large portion of the areas that we wanted, but we couldnt give up all of the sanctions for that. Reporter the north korean demand, a deal breaker for trump. But a sigh of relief for aides who feared he would make major concessions. I could have 100 signed something today. We actually had papers ready to be signed but it just wasnt appropriate. I want to do it right. I would much rather do it right than do it fast. Reporter as of now, the president says theres no third summit on the horizon. It might be soon. It might not be for a long time. I cant tell you. Reporter despite talks falling apart, trump speaking highly of kim to reporters before leaving hanoi. This wasnt a walk away like you get up and walk out. No, this was very friendly. We shook hands. You know, theres a warmth that we have and i hope that stays. I think it will. Reporter kim leads one of the most oppressive regimes on the planet, one widely blamed for the death of Otto Warmbier, American College student detained in north korea and sent home in a coma only to die days later. He tells me he didnt know about it, and i will take him at his word. Reporter trump, siding with the north korean dictator, while angering allies at home. We know what happened to otto. We know what this country has done. Reporter the president s critics sounded hopeful about the outcome of the summit. Deal that fell short of complete verifiable denuclearization would have only made north korea stronger and the world less safe. Reporter jake after the president left vietnam today, the north Korean Foreign minister came out with a statement, disputing the president s account as to why those talks broke down, saying they requested some of the sanctions be lifted but not all of them, like the president said. When the president stopped to refuel in alaska, Sarah Sanders was asked about them. She said the president was aware of them but had no further comment for now. Is there anything you could call a success coming out of this summit . Again, i think success is continuing to talk. There hasnt been a missile launched from the north korean state in over 400 days. In the obama administration, there was a missile launched every 24 days. As long as they continue to talk, i think its a huge success. A huge success . I do. I do. Listen, as long as two people are talking, two nations are talking about denuclearization on the korean peninsula, thats a big success. Every president , up until this president , had the opportunity to kick the can down the road, whether it was president bush 41, president clinton 43, obama. Theyre not going to have a nuclear dont shake your head. Thats exactly what happened. Everyone kicked the can down the road, thinking they had time. We dont have time anymore. We need to talk. Karen . That was a good spin. You did a good job. You did your people well. One of the biggest signs of what a failure this was was the fact that the president came out and said i believe kim, that he didnt know anything about what happened to otto warmbler. Otto warmbier. Warmbier, sorry. It shows it was a failure and this is what happens when i get you guys like to say this president is not traditional. Having worked for president clinton, theres a lot of works that goes into these trips beforehand so you dont have this kind of embarrassment where a luncheon menu has been set out and people expect a signing ceremony and, oops, it didnt happen because you did not do the work and properly understand the sequencing and properly understand your adversary and what he needed to go home with. Thats mischaracterization. Thats your opinion. You got to say yours and i got to say mine. Every time he does this, critics say hes elevating kim jongun on the world stage. This is 0 for 2. Yes, the missile testing stopped and Nuclear Testing stopped. Some say they dont need to do more testing because they know they have a working nuke. Do you think this was a mistake, ultimately . With north korea specifically, im okay with doing something different, even weird, being an unconventional actor and maybe thats throwing everything off and messing with the system and popping something loose here. But as karen is noting, that should come with prenegotiations, knowing what the guy will come to the table with, knowing what he will accept and what he will not. Because trump is a totally unorthodoxed actor, i do not always trust him to have a plan when he as in the room or what the moral line is for america. He gets very transactional. And the tell if youre going to confer all this importance on north korea and legitimacy, you have to get something out of it. The tell that he went in there not ready to get something out of it and without perspective is the Otto Warmbier stuff. Its horrendous to say he had nothing to do with this, didnt know about it. In a perfectly trumpian moment it undercuts one of his actual accomplishments, although its prn to bring americans home. He did that with warmbier and now hes saying, theyre not to blame. That worries me deeply. Rick santorum, republican senator from pennsylvania, reacted to that sound bite, to the comment from President Trump on how he took kim jonguns word for it when it came to Otto Warmbier, that he didnt know he was being mistreated. This is reprehensible. He gave cover to a leader who knew very well what was going on with Otto Warmbier. I dont understand why the president does this. Im disappointed, to say the least. What do you think . Yes, thats exactly right. I think the other thing that trump doesnt understand is that what was done to that poor College Student was also meant to be kind of a middle finger for trump. Right . For the Yunited States in general . Well, he is the president of the United States. It was basically him saying im going to do this, you can do nothing about it. I have this little respect for you and your country that i will do this with no concern whatsoever about any ramifications. You do not do Something Like that to an american citizen unless you believe that youre not going to be held accountable. I think most americans know that. Most americans know that the reason they feel pretty safe traveling is because they can rely on their government to protect them. And, at the minimum, punish people who do these reprehensible things to americans. Why say i take kim jongun at his word, same way took Mohammed Bin Salman at his word, the same way he said i take Vladimir Putin at his word, and the not get into objeabsolving kim jong nothing goes on in the hermt kingdom without kim jongun knowing it doesnt pass the straight face test. They grab the kid, rough him up. He gets brain damaged. What . No, no, let me explain something here. Im saying, where president kim said i didnt know he was going to be killed. Thats ridiculous. Im just saying that could be the scenario. I think its reprehensible and the president should have said this is a terrible thing. Were going to hold them accountable. He shouldnt have said what he said. Its clear i dont think anybody in america is saying thats okay to say. There isnt an american in north korea that its impossible. Its impossible that they dont know everything thats happening. Separating the misstatement, the president s gaf there, saying that, that he shouldnt have made. Complete misstatement, from the point of not having ne done any spade work, the no thaegs somehow the president just jetted over there, did a dropby, is a little bit thats true but just sources tell cnn that trumps aides warned him in the days and hours leading up to the talks that north korean negotiators were not budging from their demands that they have sanction relief before they do anything but the president , our reporting says, thought he could go in the room. Thats right. With the force of his personality change the equation and it didnt work. It didnt work. How are we any worse off at this point . You keep pushing. If anything, it shows that were not everyone was worried he was going to take a bad deal, come back with a bad deal. President stood up and walked away. In fairness, that is the one thing that he did right. He walked way from a bad deal. It suggests that it must have been really bad for him to walk away. He was in such need of a win, given how they built this up and, again, created all this hype. Theres no way that the North Koreans havent been watching whats been going on in the United States and knew he was coming to this summit in a very weakened condition and probably figured, we dont need to give him what he needs. By the way, kim gets to go back to his country and say i stood up to the american. Theyre not going to take us for fools and here comes our president yes, he walked a y away, but the experts are saying we do not know what is the actual status of our relationship with north korea and we cant even verify that theyve done the things that they said they did from the last time we met. Were no worse off. You dont know that. Nichlt kki haley tweeted the americans know the torture th cruelty that Otto Warmbier suffered at the hands of north korea of the our hearts are with the barmbwarmbier family. Just hold on, im comin hold on, im comin hold on dont you worry, im comin here i come you might or joints. Hing for your heart. But do you take something for your brain. Michael cohen now back before Congress Today after that explosive public testimony that gave investigators the potential gold mine of leads to explore about his former boss. Cohen told lawmakers that then candidate trump committed crimes, told lawmakerer s where to go to get more, who to interview. He is a proven liar, previously lied to congress and is go iingo jail and even made questionable claims while telling his version of the truth yesterday. His testimony could be full of New Territory for investigators. Reporter Michael Cohen, capping off three days on capitol hill. Today, behind closed doors. His sitdown inside a secure facility with the House Intelligence Committee comes after an explosive open session wednesday, with House Oversight. He is a conman and he is a chea cheat. Adam schiff told cnn his committee would focus on finding out more about the president s potential criminal conduct. Schiff tweeting well examine indepth trump tower moscow, Roger Stone Wikileaks and any white house role in cohens false statements to congress. Cohens claim that donald trump jr. Told his father about the meeting with the russians at trump tower before it happened in june 2016 as well as cohens claim that roger stone informed the president that wikileaks was about to expose emails from the Clinton Campaign and the dnc. House oversight chairman Elijah Cummings said theres a lot more investigating to be done across congress. What we did yesterday was gather a lot of information that i think will be we may not look into it in our committee but one of the five or six committees will. Reporter how shall money to Stormy Daniels to keep her quiet about an alleged affair with trump years before. Two reimbursement checks, one signed by the president and the other, he said, was signed by al ann weisselberg and donald trump jr. The financial scam that the president Alan Weisselberg and donald trump jr. Is being investigate by the Southern District of new york . I would rather not discuss that question because it could be part of an investigation thats currently ongoing. Reporter Alan Weisselberg is the Trump Organization cfo and he has provided testimony to prosecutors in manhattan in exchange for limited liability. Handing over the 2011 and 2013 Financial Statements trump allegedly gave Deutsche Bank as a basis of a loan to bite buffalo bills. He inflated his worth for this loan as well as on other occasions. Did the president ever provide inflated assets to an Insurance Company . Yes. And cohen also suggested that prosecutors in new york are looking at other potential criminal conduct by the president beyond those hush money payments. Of course, weve already reported that sdny is looking toward the trump inaugural committee. Jake, of course, with House Oversight chair Elijah Cummings saying he expects widespread investigations over several committees, it appears these three days of testimony from Michael Cohen may just be the tip of the iceberg. Jake . Thank you very much, jessica. Legal reporter laura jarrett, laura coates. Let me start with you. If you take cohen at his word thats a big if. Thats a big if. But if you do, he gave lawmakers a lot to examine. One day removed now here are a few of the potential crimes that hes alleging the president committed. Perjury, bank fraud, insurance fraud, election fraud, witness tampering, making false statements and there are a lot more. What do you think is most potentially legally problematic for President Trump . First of all all of those are problematic. The one that was very problematic to me was the idea of the Campaign Finance violations. The reason for that is because you already have a u. S. Attorneys office in new york who has said that this person, donald trump, is essentially an unindicted coconspiratorer. Theyve already signed on past investigations. Now an actual offense. It was a felony related to it. We know from cohens testimony that he identified the person as individual one is president donald trump. At first we thought it was just donald trump the citizen, perhaps even the candidate. Now you know it was the president as well. Why thats important, this whole notion of impeachment, a criminal offense, impeachment is about high crimes and misdemeanors. Its not expressly said what they mean by that. There is some nebulous aspect of it, but a felony fits into the category of that. Why is problematic on the criminal front, sdny doesnt have the same regulation of not indicting a sitting president and now have the idea of political hard place of rock and a hard place for the president. Somebody has already said trump is one of them. He talked about the payments and made them as president in the oval office. Yes. Laura jarrett, today, republican congressman jim jordan, ranking republican and mark meadows, very close allies, both of them, to President Trump, asked the Justice Department to investigate cohen for possible perjury, specifically for lying, i believe this is the case theyre making, about he didnt want a job in the Trump White House when he did. Theres a ton of evidence, including a comment he made to chris cuomo on his show. Could this actually whats the legal ramification . Hes already going to jail for lying to congress. Of course the Justice Department doesnt need a referral from two congressmen meadows and jordan, in order to open up an investigation. I think its safe to say they were probably paying close attention to every word that came out of Michael Cohens mouth, making sure he didnt run afoul to open investigations and that it didnt contradict anything he said behind closed doors. This is pure partisanship, he testified truthfully, one of the congressmen told us. When the Southern District of new york said they have Text Messages showing he thought he was going to get a job in the white house. That is raising this question about whether he said he had never committed bank fraud. He didnt plead guilty to bank fraud. He pled guilty to providing a false statement to a financial institution. Theres wiggle room on some of these. On the not wanting the job in the white house thats tricky for him. Laura coates, freshman congresswoman alexandria ocasiocortez, digging into bank fraud allegations. Take a listen. Did the president ever provide inflated assets to an Insurance Company . Yes. Who else knows that the president did this . Alan weisselberg, Ron Lieberman and calamari. Do you think we need to review his Financial Statements and his tax returns in order to compare them . Yes, and you would find it at the trump org. Where could this lead investigators . Its not a rabbit hole. You have a witness list. He just named all the people in response to who would know about this information and who do we need to see and what do we need to see . This is keen of her to do so. Not just a hypothetical, theatrical, or simply try to use it to grandstand. She elicited testimony, which is what youre supposed to do at these hearings, to figure out where youre supposed to go next. The function is to have a legislative agenda and figure out where to go next. He just named people. You can imagine every single one of them saying here we go. Only one of them, alan weisselbe weisselberg, he had limited immunity. He has been exposed in front of congre congress. You may be able to expose that and say whats to lose you already have that immunity. Lesson from the freshman to the elders, less speeches and more information eliciting testimony. During the cohen testimony yesterday meadows introduced an africanamerican Trump Administration official who has worked for the president for a long time to push back against c cohens assertion that President Trump say racist. Congresswoman talib, a democrat, said that action itself by meadows was racist, an accusation to which he took exception. But progressive activists resurfaced these comments by meadows from 2012. What were going to do is take back our country. 2012 is the time. Were going to send mr. Obama home to kenya or wherever it is. Meadows responded this morning by telling cnn he should not have said that and that he does not have a racial bone in his body. This afternoon, another video of meadows speaking about president obama resurfaced days after that first one in 2012, suggesting this wasnt just one answer but may have been something of a talking point at the time. Well send you back home to kenya or wherever it is. Well send you back home. Lets talk about this with more of our experts. Karen finney, meadows has said he shouldnt have said that. What more does he need to do or is that enough . Thats all he can do, right . The reality is that congressman talib was correct in that his actions were racist. But i understand how, as a white man, regardless of whether or not you have black or brown colored kids children of color, sorry, in your family, you may not understand how people who have skin my tone and darker experience the world and why we would see it as racist. And i think thats really the point here. The point she was making is, you know, from her perspective, it felt racist and it was racist. He may disagree. Obviously he has some issues in his background but virtually i have members of my own family as a mixed race person who are white who would say theyre not racist. Theyre not racist but they still say racist things and i still find myself having to point out to them some of the things they said are racist or hey, thats why people think thats racist. And so this is a conversation we started to have in 2008 with president obamas running for office. And i suspect given the fact that we have the most diverse electorate and the most diverse field of candidates at this time, were going to have this conversation again about race. I think what youre seeing is people are much more comfortable speaking up and speaking out and calling foul and really saying, thats racist. Thats what racism looks like. I think we have to be open to have that conversation. Lets turn now to the 2020 campaign. Even the 2020 candidates are still talking about the cohen testimony. Leyla santiago caught up with one democrat excited to make some news of his own. Thats our 2020 lead today. She joins us from el paso, texas. Leyla, orourke told you he has made a decision about 2020. What did he say . Step one, check. Right . But when and where he will make this announcement is still very much unclear. I specifically went to find him after he released a statement, saying he had made a decision with his wife, amy, and kids. They were excited to make the announcement. I went to him and asked him point blank, are you rung for u. S. President . Heres what he said. Youre excited to announce something soon. What is that . Ill be making an announcement soon. Ill be making the same announcement to everyone at the same time. Are you running for president . Thats all i can say at this time. Are you running for president . Thats all im going to say. When will you make that announcement . Soon. Can you define soon . I cant. I cant. Im sorry. Reporter it was not lost on me that smile that he had on his face. You know, the last time he said something was coming soon was when he spoke to oprah and she pinned him down and said is there a timeline . A few weeks ago he said i will make a decision by the end of the month. That has happened now that we are at the end of the month. I spoke with his family today. They, themselves, are still waiting to get word from him as to when this will come. But they did tell me his sister said she is on board with him vying for a seat in the oval office. All right. I think the smile says it all but well wait for the official announcement. Leyla santiago, the tenacious leyla santiago, thank you very much. On the heels of those comments from beto orourke, hypothetical matchup between President Trump and beto orourke, its a dead heat. 47 pick trump, 46 pick beto orourke. President trump with a slight advantage in each matchup. Seven points above Kamala Harris and elizabeth warren. Its early. Polls dont necessarily mean much. President trump won texas by nine points in 2016. What do you think . I would be concerned if i was donald trump, definitely. Thats amazing that you could have, really, any of those democrats that close. But looking at beto, who is known to texas voters. So theyre not just blindly saying i dont like trump so ill go for this other person, that thats somebody they would consider voting for, i think, is really telling in such a red state. So i think he would be crazy not to run. I would be very surprised if he didnt run. You know, he has this National Profile that people would kill for. And so he comes into the race, if he decides to run, already at the top of the heap. He knows how to fund raise. Hes going to have a lot of money. He can go the distance. Yeah, i would be absolutely shocked if he doesnt run. Another democrat may be looking to jump in the 2020 race. Michael bloombergs team is searching for possible spaces for campaign headquarters, interviewing people to manage scheduling. What does Michael Bloomberg offer the 2020 democratic pool that is missing, if anything . I dont know. More money than trump has . I dont know. And the beto point, can i say maybe hes announcing that aps really cool medium post going up. I think youre right about the numbers in texas for beto. I think running against ted cruz is a very different ball game than running against Kamala Harris in your own party. He may need to watch out for her skills and many of these other guys skills on a national stage. Bloomberg can say that he has both been a successful businessman. Remember, in the business community, that was one of the things that they said against trump. More money, more success. More successful. And has been a successful mayor of new york city. So he has run a large city effectively. He knows the difference between running a country and running a City Government or the country. David, you have said you think former Vice President joe biden would post the toughest challenge. But some democrats in the state of iowa are raising concerns that he missed his chance. Brett niles in link county, iowa, tells reuters, the longer he waits the more people will want to follow the young and newer voices. Its not about who will win california. Michael bloomberg will crush new york. Great. Hell win by a landslide. Who stands the best chances to winning those swing states that President Trump won, that hadnt been won before, ohio, pennsylvania, indiana, kentucky. Who is going to stand the best chance . Sherrod brown, amy klobuchar. Beto orourke. People who run to the center will have do you think that biden has waited too long . He should make a decision and get in if he wants to win. Theres a big debate going on about what you just said, right . Im assuming youre operating under the assumption that they would turn out white, middleclass voters whereas if you look you know, i think im actually more in the camp that you need somebody who will energize people that obama energized, who didnt turn out during the last election. I think that could point to more of a Kamala Harris and, in particular, a younger candidate probably. So i think if you have most of those people turn out the way they turned out for obama, things would have gone differently for Hillary Clinton versus going and trying to get voters who may be lost. Not in pennsylvania. Look at the numbers. Hillary clinton outperformed she did extremely well in pennsylvania. Those states, President Trump just got 50,000 more people to turn out than ever turned out before. Historic highs in these counties. I think that needs to be focused on. Bryce harper to the phillies. Two countries with Nuclear Weapons on the briveng of allout war. Longsimmering tensions have spiked between india and pakistan. Bombings and air struks are striking fears that it could possibly escalate into a catastrophe. A pakistanbased terrorist group killed 40 indian soldiers. Reporter with all the drama around President Trumps summit with kim jongun and the president s former fixer testifying on capitol hill, it was drowning out a dangerous turn of events, the prospect of war between two nucleararmed longtime enemies, india and pakistan. Days of deadly violence after india said it carried out an air strike against terrorists in pakistan. Pakistan responding, claiming they shot down two indian jets in the contested kashmir region, which both countries claim as their own. Indian pilot was captured. What was your mission . Im sorry. Im not supposed to tell you this. Militaries who are built up around each other. They see each other as primary threats and its been a very combustible situation for years now. Reporter powers, you clg the United States, called on both countries to restrain themselves. Weve been in the middle trying to help them both out, see if we can get some organization and some peace, and i think probably thats going to be happening. Reporter between the two, india and pakistan have almost 300 Nuclear Weapons. Indias public and Prime Minister cheering on the actions of their military against pakistan. India will work as one. India will grow as one. India will fight as one. India will win as one. Both sides have a political incentive to calm things down. Of course, neither side sees an upside in a full military conflict at this stage. Pakistans new, relatively untested Prime Minister imran khan, a cricket star, has called for patience from both sides. If you take one step towards peace, we will take two. Pakistan never wants to escalate. Pakistan never wants to be in a hostile position. And, jake, gunfire across the border has left four civilians dead in pakistan, according to the military. India has put its air defenses on high alert. Mike pompeo has spoken to both countrys Prime Ministers, calling on them to deescalate. Jake . Sam, pakistan said it would release the indian pilot who was in custody after its plane was shot down yesterday. Some are calling this an olive branch. How is india reacting to the offer . So far the only reaction has been from the air force spokesman saying he would welcome the return of the pilot. Theres been no official government reaction. That, jake, i think is because at the moment Prime Minister modi is enjoying in a sense that bel ic velicose language. But india has set or reset the bitter relationship with pakistan, now reserving for its the right, if you like, of pretemptive action. Weve seen the west take pre take preactive intervention in the past, of course, against alleged terrorist targets. Now india is doing it. If there is another terrorist attacks that the indians blame on pakistan, preemptive action would be taken again and that is new. Cia official phil mudd joins me now. You worked on this issue when you were at the cia. Yeah. What is more concerning to you, the failure of President Trump to achieve anything really concrete at the summit with north korea or this standoff . I would say easily north korea. Couple of quick reasons. India and pakistan have faced off multiple times in the 70plus years since their independence. They understand each other. The militaries understand each other and india understands the significance if they engage with the pakistanis of their position in the global economy. Theyve really emerged in the past few decades. Contrast that to north korea, i dont think we understand kim jongun or his motivations. Obviously the North Koreans have focused on the United States. India and pakistan are not focusing on the United States. If you look at the fact that north korea has targeted us, north korea is a bigger concern. When you hear the indian Prime Minister sounding as if hes enjoying this moment of sending in his fighters to bomb pakistani terrorist cells, et ceter cetera, you think thats bluster to a large degree . He has to say that. You have a nationalist party that has to tell a bunch of indians, im going to stand up to defend you. Look at whats at stake number two i mentioned earlier, indians in contrast when i worked this issue, the risk they take by telling the Global Economic world, hey, were going to engage in a fight with pakistan, which is declining globally, at the expense of our position globally, like china and the United States, i dont think the indians will do that. But theyve got to say were going to fight the pakistanis on this, sort of rhetorically. Phil, appreciate your time. Were the beginnings of an american political dynasty made in china . Thats next of. Not just with other families and other people but in the family, internally. No question. And theyre very good natured about it. But they would stack the teams if they were playing tennis against each other. They would find a pro to play with them to make sure who won. But i also think it speaks to their drive.
