Today democratic hopefuls are spread out giving speeches, Holding Town Hall events to get out ahead with a year and 10 months away. We start off with a look at the expanding president ial field. Truth, justice, decency, equality, freedom, democracy. With those words harris made it official today. Thats why im running for president of the United States. The california senator making her announcement as the nation remembers the legacy of Martin Luther king jr. , highlighting her own heritage. Her mother is from india. Her father jamaica. They came together in the civil rights movement. She rose from prosecutor to California Attorney general. Before being elected to the u. S. Senate two years ago. We must fight back because this fight is a righteous fight. Fighting against this will take all of us. It cannot be left to people of color alone. I think everyone is widely reck can cog noising she is probably one of the most fcandidates that well see. Im sure there will be a lot of things but i keep seeing things bubbling up. She has problems with her record as a prosecutor. The first black woman to run for president launched her campaign. It has not lost so many people. It is a historic day for so many reasons. Im happy to see so many women in the rachlts i think there are my father before he passed was a 64yearold black man. I think if you told him a black woman would be a viable candidate for president of the United States of america he would have told you to take that thing back somewhere else. Thats not the first phrase out of your mouth its not the first phrase. Its about her record as a prosecutor. Can i say one thing . She did a q and a at howard university. A reporter asked how do you identify yourself . Now look, it will be a long primary. I hope we are going to ask everybody how they identify themselves. She answered as an american. I think they were getting her racial make up. There is a lot of talk about the coalition that senator harris brings to this talking about black americans but talking about millennials as well. Groups that she underperformed on do you see that coalition behind a candidate like her . Yes. I see much more that we dont know yet. One thing is for sure. She is very qualified. She has been going through that path and growing professionally. The prosecutor she created for better or worse she has a certain reputation. She doesnt go left left and she is a lot that we dont know for sure. So i think thats space that she is creating is open to bring a lot of those members. Lets not forget that according to obama she a very attractive person and thats something that President Trump considers important. It could be by itself for him a threat. Probably like to forget that line. Yes. So you hear others here say she is pretty from your point of view as a democratic candidate. She wont look that way in this race. Thats not the idea here. This is not a huge surprise. I think a well done announcement but its all fun and games and historic times and back slapping until they have to start drawing contrast. Thats what she refers to. Somebody is going to have to take those steps at some point. As the Republican Party found out it is a very clean process. Everything works out fine. Yeah. It will be rowdy. Lets look at the policy here. She is talking about a middle class tax plan. It is aimed at a group that they did not perform well in 2016 but also medicare for all. It takes you to the left certainly here but to both of you, because im curious, give me your review of that policy as well. I would say it is interesting that the Democratic Candidates seem to be jumping in together on medicare for all. I havent seen her explain the economics of that. I dont know that shes is most well suit today do that. It would be warrens lane. I havent seen any democrat make the math work on that. So i think there will be some negotiation and waiting in a field this big to see who gets ahead of explaining heart issues like that first and this speaks to the vagueness you pointed out when it come to harris is that she will wait and see i would think. You have to do that. How do you look at that platform as kind of a test case for a winner against trump . Look, i think americans have spoken very clearly that they believe that health care should be a right and not just a privilege. When you get to talking about what it looks like thats where folks start to draw blood. So we will have to have a robust primary. I think senator harris came out and shaid she was a progressive prosecutor. Im excited about this field of candidates that have already announced and folks that have yet to announce. Cant wait for the first debate in june or the town hall next week. I was going to say the key for any of these folks is to recreate the Obama Coalition which means like getting young voters very excited and doing a little bit and reaching across in repair. And you see more. Thats the question. I think she has the ability to create that excitement with young people and with African American voters while being able to possibly cross that bridge. Yeah. And shell deal with rand paul. She talked about this that she did with rand paul. It was at an event she did a couple of weeks ago. The week after she said how are you People Holding up . She said it remains to be seen but perhaps this is one piece of the coalition. I would be remissed not to mention the former sitting Vice President as he is pondering his run. In the House Democrats are planning to put their own proposal up far vote this week offering trump an additional 1 billion dollars but leaving out the wall. Neither plan bringing it any closer to ending the monthlong shutdown as Coast Guard Service members continue to be deployed without pay the president tweeting praise for the great patriots effected by the shutdown. For federal workers on the verge of missing a second paycheck this year that message is cold comfort. At adding to the ongoing stalemate President Trump is getting pressure from the right some saying his proposal to end the shutdown is actually amnesty. If you think of how much this president would have to win by giving concessions in what we are talking about. The consequences at the end of the day are more than the issues that have brought us to this point. You will think he would say wait a minute. Let me play the field and let me do the art of the deal the way it is supposed to be. Lets negotiate the right way not the wrong prompt way. And Vice President pence was asked about this as he had been plugging the president S Immigration plan. He asked if the president was willing to negotiate more. Have a listen to his answer. When you say work together, does that mean youre willing to negotiate from what the president said or is that the final offer . Well, of course. The legislative process is a negotiation. Of course the president do you see him willing to give me . I dont think it was a bad move for him to say this is the thing im offering. He has gotten flak in the past and i have given it for being really unclear and actually being fairly bad at it. In this case it is very clear. The line is the physical barrier. The physical barrier will be the one. He is trying to put pressure on some republicans obviously but also like the joneses who tweeted semi approvingly. I dont know how they meet in the middle because the left understa understandably is like we gave you the house for a reason. I do think theres middle ground. There has been in the past. I think he is probably willing to move but finding that physical ground and that compromised ground in this environment is extremely difficult. Do you know what that is . That is all the democrats are asking for. Talk about negotiations. Democrats will say why are we holding the American People hostage . If the president was truly wanting to enter in good faith and talk about daca and things he took away and now all of a sudden she putting them back. If he is no i just think im just saying, the president really wanted to negotiate he would open up i think the he is seeing him as losing but this is not the time to open the door. They did put temporary amnesty in a three month reprieve on the table. Democrats say no. Excuse me. Three years. So permanent wall, permanent amnesty but the democrats want that is making everybody theres no way. It doesnt even well, it is. A permanent dreamer deal would not be a permanent but thats not whats being offered. But she said if it was not three years i mean thats an that is if everyone recognized every time on this show we talk about immigration. Comprehensive Immigration Reform that would be nice but youll have the donald trump has would you say thats there was a deal that did have protections for dreamers not that long ago. I know but here we are now. And donald trump went back on that original deal money for the border. Much more for the border walls. Donald trump is not a good faith negotiator. It started in sear ris of interviews on sunday when the president s lawyer said that trump may have discussed the trump tower moscow project all the way up to election day much longer than previously knowledged. Now giuliani says hi comments were based on hype thet thothett actual conversations. Tough question to ask because its a difficult one to answer but can you make sense of what the bottom line is from giulianis stand point . The bottom line is he seems to talk first and figure out the rest later. It doesnt clarify when the conversations about moscow actually ended. This is as he try to clean up a mess seemingly of his own making. President trumps attorney doing damage control today over his own media blitz after first admitting the president had conversations about a trump tower deal all the way through the 2016 election. It could be up to as far as october or november. It covers until the election. Any time until that period they could have talked about it. Giuliani says President Trump has no recollection as late as election day. Trump couldnt know the exact day the talks ended because theres no record of the negotiations. Just yesterday giuliani says trump knowledged the project with his former personal attorney during the election. He knowledged they had conversations about it throughout 2015 and 2016. Giuliani telling the new york time that is trump told him the discussions were going on from the day i announced to the day i won. Comments flying in the face since he was campaigning. I have nothing to do with russia. The new time line of discussions revealing how trumps business dealings coincited with proclamations on the campaign trail. The conversations also happening in july of that year. Then then trump made this call to action to russian hackers. If he had any discussions it would be about which they all believed was true. I believed it was true. I still believe it may be true. Youre also learning that trumps legal team that they reached out about the buzz feed story that was causing such a stir. The special Councils Office took the step of putting on a statement that rejected the central premise of this buzz feed story. They had evidence that Michael Cohen was directed to lie. I want to begin here because the president lied about his dealings with moscow and repeatedly. Im going to play. Have a listen. I have no dealings with russia. I have no deals in russia. I have no deals that could happen in russia because we have stayed away. I have no loans. We could make deals in russia. I think it would be a conflict. I have no loans, no dealings and no current pending deals. Virtually every word he said is false. It has been established by sworn testimony and his lawyer now. Does that matter . It should. We know there were long talks about the moscow project. And the only thing you can take away from his interviews is that they are dead set on not coming clean with the time line of those talks. Remember the reason that Robert Mueller sentenced Michael Cohen. He points out two things. Michael cohen lied to congress about the duration of those talks and the links between trump and those talks. They want to stuff that down into a black box. Michael cohen lied because he was trying to coordinate. I guess its an open question whether or not trump had knowledge of how he was going lie. He went before the cameras. He said hey, this is what im telling everybody. Giuliani knows what we know. The president lies every day. I think he may be always trying to leave space or maybe perhaps his politics of confusion, attrition, whatever it is its clear it is not a very coordinated legal strategy. That much is clear. So maybe giuliani will be the fall giechuy. Maybe they will blame it on him. It is harder for People Like Us to analyze and keeps us all distracted. And as you know the Trump Administration, President Trump himself has accused our out dpsz l outlet and others. He has had an inability to tell the truth about his dealings from russia. From your perspective what is your reaction . I have suspected when you got to the got bot tom of this it is not the giant global collusion to get trump elected but what they are trying to hide is the money thing. What i do know is theres no separation in the trump family between business and the business he is now doing. Thats the problem and has been a problem. I do think maybe buzz feed and rudy could talk about how to get things straight before they become public with them. I do not know whether it is stupidity, strategy or what accommodation there of. What he is saying is entirely confusing. Its clear there was something they were trying to hide here. So the other headline as well is saying, okay. This is even post the confusion about the buzz feed story saying that if the president did speak to Michael Cohen prior to his testimony to congress its no big deal. Your reaction . Giuliani continues to move the goal post. I watched that interview live. Im confused. I dont know if giuliani is telling the truth, trying to confuse us. Thats why at the end of the day protecting the investigation is very important. Thats why you have seen bipartisan bills that have come together in the senate that he refused to put on the floor to protect the special council and i think it is upon every american regardless of what side of the aisle you sit onto say we need to let it go through the duration. I also say mueller did himself a lot of favors by saying i will be an honest broker. Yes. With people that are skeptical of him. Yes. There are two things we have to look at going forward. There is a time line for these moscow discussions. There is also a time line of russians interfering in the election. There may be points where those things match up. I suspect that is what the trump team is trying to hide. And the other thing is even if it was without the knowledge of trump and i spoke about this, that russia, when it behaves is trying to offer them stuff. You have a real estate deal. Right. And thats part of the point here. You could be an unwhiting cooperator. And the business has never stopped, right . The business has never stopped. At some point those questions, those points will collude and at some point there will be a lot of business going on which is what they are trying to confuse us about. It shouldnt be overlooked there has been recent reporting that donald trump has met with putin. There have not been other people in the room. Our intelligence officials are looking to moscow to know what was said in the meetings. I think it is very concerning and also something i hope congressional investigators are looking at.
