The president and attorney general sessions obviously have a very strained relationship and what are sources telling you . Reporter well, jake, sessions has come to turns with things not going to end well one way or the other. When President Trump first started attacking sessions he kept his head down, said he would keep doing his job at the Justice Department and then as the attacks increased he pushed back and now in recent weeks hes readily acknowledging that things between the two of them have gotten even worse. He jokes from time to time he checks out the president s twitter feed to check out his job status and signaling in all seriousness hes prepared for the outcome even if that includes being fired. When are folks going to step up and let the president know, sir, that is not how we do business in the United States of america . Unless theres classified information released in the oped. So if there isnt and doesnt seem to be, its general level of discussion and the Foreign Policy discussion is generic about russia and so forth. So i assume that the attorney general will ignore this charge from the president as hes ignored others. If he ignores the charge, is the gone or gone anyway after the midterms . It feels like hes gone anyway after the midterms. It doesnt seem that relationship, thats not a rift thats mended any time soon. But i dont think this would be the straw frankly. I think the straw happened a long time ago and hes dead man walking. President obama, former president obama gave a speech today and he said a lot of harsh and tough things about President Trump but he did Say Something that almost defended trump from the oped. I want you to take a listen. The claim that everything will turn out okay because there are people inside the white house who secretly arent following the president s orders, that is not a check. We are not doing everything he says. The constitution did not anticipate that anonymous Administration Officials not elected would be the check on an out of control presidency that by their own account they see as a threat to National Security as undermining democratic norms. I think people in the administration are forced to take some of the actions theyre taking and because congress completely abdicated its check on the executive branch. Im watching interviews with republican members over the past few days and journalists pressed them on what are you doing to do . How are you going to investigate this . The constitution, Civil Service laws are constitution and put limitations on what the president can order people to do. We have a First Amendment which people in the government have a right to use. Having said that, i think the actions described in the oped i think are quite defensible, a. B, i dont agree no decent people can work in the administration and not to be grateful. They elect you to do the business of the people and the problem with this particular Republican Controlled Congress is they have not been necessarily doing the bidding of the people. One things that nikki haley did and mentioned in the anonymous oped is seeing a divergence of officials and trump said particularly on russ. Haley has diverged so i dont know in f thats right or wrong or what it is but thats pointed to in the oped as manager that maybe shes doesnt know that shes part of there is this chasm of the Trump Administrations position on russia and President Trumps position on russia. George papadopoulos, he pleaded guilty to lying to the fbi when the russia conspiracy started. He was once called an excellent guy by then candidate trump and as President Trump today denied ever knowing him. He had a seat at trumps National Security table during the campaign and when the charges came down he was dismissed as a coffee boy by some officials. I spoke with him before todays hearing and ill have the first hearing with him in a moment and first cnn sara murray outside the courthouse. What was the sentence . Thats right. The judge sentenced George Papadopoulos to 14 days in prison and fine after expressing regret for lying to investigators and the lawyers cast him as a naive fool. George papadopoulos, the former Foreign Policy advise tore the Trump Campaign the first member of the president s team to be sentenced as part of the russia investigation, far from the National Impact the 31yearold had hoped to have. According to the sentencing memo of papadopoulos lawyers, he misled investigators to save the political aspirations and preserve a perhaps misguided loyalty to his master. That master and the administration quick to dismiss the advisers role. It was a volunteer position and, again, no activity was ever done in an official capacity. I have no idea why people would think that a volunteer coffee boy like George Papadopoulos to get to the top of the campaign. Reporter he revealed to a diplomat he was told the russians had thousands of emails of Hillary Clinton and then it became Robert Muellers special counsel probe. In the 2016 campaign, the young adviser attended a meeting of the National Security Team Including donald trump and Jeff Sessions. Papadopoulos pitched a meeting of then candidate trump and russian president vladimir putin. When the fbi asked him about his kremlin link contacts seeking to meddle what he did was lie and thats on him. Not on the campaign. We cant speak for that. Reporter the defense pleaded ignorance. To say george was out of his depth would be a gross understating. His wife got even more technical. He didnt lie because of the nature of his relationship with russia. Because he didnt have any relationship with russia. He lied about the date. Reporter but the prosecution says papadopoulos is not just a nervous novice but an uncooperative one. The defendant did not provide substantial assistance and much of the information provided by the defendant came only after the government confronted him. Now, the government wanted to use George Papadopoulos has an example of what happens when people lie to investigators and he asked that they go to prison for six months and the judge deciding a twoweek sentence would fit the bill. Mashburn testified to the Senate Judiciary committee. We have a lot of people involved this that dont tell the truth and hard to know who to believe.
