The president mocked the me too movement. Where is the poison in authorities trying find the source of the toxic material before more british citizens collapse. Welcome to the lead. Im erica hill in for jake. The dire rescue. A volunteer helping died while making the fivehour dive out of the caves. After delivering oxygen tanks to the teams location. That reality emphasizing just how dangerous this trek would be for these boys. Some of whom cannot swim. All of have been physically weakened by the ordeal. An official says the boys are not likely to be rescued in the coming hours because of that danger. This is the oxygen levels in the cramped, pitch black cave are dropping. Cnns matt rivers following this story on the ground for us in thailand. Tom foreman is in the virtual studio. Matt, do we know if any of the parents have been able to have contact with their children . Reporter thats been a priority right from the beginning, trying to get telephone lines, communication lines into the cave. To reach the boys so they can talk. Thats not been successful as of yet and so what we know happened in lieu of that, parents actually wrote letters, they were delivered to their kids inside that cave. As these rescue operations continue here in northern thailand in earnest. Urgent rescue efforts through narrow passages and murky water are now all the more dire as experts warn the oxygen needed in this cave is running out. Here in the small cavern the air is so precious, half of the rescuers forced to leave to conserve it. This as attempts to keep the group alive turn deadly. Former navy s. E. A. L. Delivered oxygen to the boys chamber thursday and ran out of his own air supply on the way back. And died. Everybodys professional so were trying to put it away and avoid it never happen again. Reporter the expert divers death a grim reminder of the challenges ahead. Rescuers say the boys as young as 11 may have to dive through the same perilous passageways to escape. The plan is unsettling for the families waiting above ground. Hes never dived, this man says of his loved one. But he can swim a little. The next 48 hours are critical. Monsoons are due to deluge the area starting sunday. Flooding the cave exits that teams have been draining for days. Still, sources tell cnn they are unlikely to move the group for at least 24 hours. Evacuating them now is too treacherous and dont have the right sized wet suits to keep their small bodies warm on the journey out. Local children rallying around the trapped soccer team posting notes of love, cone urgement. Dont give up, one poster says. Likewise, the local community throwing resources, support and prayer behind the rescuers here. And so, in addition to the option of rescuing them by swimming out, the other big effort here is trying to find out what they call natural chimneys, basically holes. They surveyed about 100 holes yesterday. Only a little more than a dozen, maybe half a dozen, 18 or so holes looked promising. And within those, not a ton of promise there. So thats going to continue today, erica. Matt, appreciate it. Tom foreman has a virtual look for us. So, tom, initially the thinking here was that the boys may have to stay in that area for months in that cave until the monsoon season ended. Now authorities saying circumstances have changed because of just how low the oxygen levels are inside there. Yeah. Simple truth is only reason air moves in and out generally is because the temperature up on the ground changes. That would be true in this case, as well. And when you talk about going two and a half miles in and a half mile down, that has very little affect for all practical purposes. These boys are in a sealed chamber with their coach and the air does appear to be running out. How much . They should be getting 21 oxygen in every breath of air. By the accounts were hearing its 15 . That means decreased ability to work strenuously, impaired coordination and accounts that basically saying decrease the vision in low light. None of this is necessarily permanent. We do know theyre taking supplemental ox yen to help out but its worrisome. Certainly is. About getting the water out of the cave, theres pumping going on. Where do we stand on that end . Pumping lot. Its clearly not enough as of yet. Right now, they have been clearing over 400,000 gallons per hour. Thats two thirds the size of an olympic Swimming Pool with the idea of maybe you can get it down enough to sort of clear a brief path to bring the kids out but look at whats been happening inside there. As far as we know there are still substantial flooded areas, substantial areas to have to take the kids in scuba gear underwater. We dont 20 minutes, 30 minutes, an hour but its a huge challenge to try to get them out of the entrance there and as noted just a moment ago, the forecast is not promising. They have been trying to pump out this water, the water coming in after showing up. They have had a little lull but on the way big rains are coming and theres no indication these pumps can possibly keep up with that, erica. Tom, you just touched on this. This is not a Straight Line back to these kids. It is very difficult to navigate and takes hours to get there and back. Yeah. The currents in there, the lack of visibility, the cold, these are all factors. But nothing is more difficult than this fact that there are places where reportedly the passageway is no bigger than a human being. Where divers have to take off the tanks to get through and limits how much to bring in and out. It makes it virtually impossible to talk about an air pipe in here. And imagine trying to pull a frightened inexperienced exhausted teenager through Something Like that. Underwater. For an extended period of time. Again, it takes six hours to get all the way in from the outside for experienced divers. Thats why there are engineers saying, look. The only thing to do is set up a relay system here and pound through a supply hole from above to keep these kids alive until you can solve the bigger problem. Erica . Massive undertaking, tom. Appreciate it as always. Thank you. Joining us, congressman scott taylor of virginia, a former navy s. E. A. L. Thank you for being with us. When we see the way that tom lays that out and the challenges here, how would this happen . If youre bringing one of these kids out, are they just holding on to the navy s. E. A. L. Or an apparatus to use to stay connected . Well, thank you for having me. But let me first preface saying i dont have any experience bringing kids out of a cave. Rescue or Something Like that. Thats a very unique situation happening right now and very dangerous one. You have a thai s. E. A. L. With experience, a professional and died on the way out because the passages are extremely narrow. Theyre cold, wet, tired. I would be very concerned about the children and the state of mind. I know and i understand what theyre trying to do is put full face masks on them, how to use that and dive and takes a long time to get proficient at it. And, you know, again, the biggest problem, one of the biggest problems that they would have coming through is panic. State of mind. So, you know, im not going to try armchair quarterback whats going on there. The professionals on the grown. You are talking about very bad options all around right now. You have obviously a much better sense than most of us do about those challenges. When you talk about the panic level and the anxiety, i was speaking with an instructor the other day who said in some ways the age of these children could actually be a benefit in that unlike an adult, someone our age, who would sit there and go through the terrible things that could happen, these kids are young enough they may not have as much fear. Would you agree with that . Possibly. You know, i have my own son and he doesnt have any fear. Ill tell you, you know, that may be the case with some of the children or some of them might be the opposite and completely clam up. The reality is talking about this thai navy s. E. A. L. Who unfortunately passed away coming back through, this is a person who has extensive experience and understands the frame of mind and, you know, probably doesnt panic in those type of situations and been through it. Its a scary thought. Again, the options are limited. And a lot of them are negative. But it is a story of potential hope. I mean, it is a rescue operation now. Not a search one so theres hope and, you know, our best wishes with those on the ground. Focus on the hope right now. Congressman, thank you. Thank you. Have a great day. Getting along with russia and getting along with china and getting along with other countries is a good thing. It is not a bad thing. Its a good thing. Reporter erica, President Trump is expected to have dinner tonight with Vice President mike pence. We previously reported that pence had a meeting this week with justices. Those are considered to be the strongest contenders for the Supreme Court so far. As we await what feels like a Season Finale come monday night. Indeed it does. Thank you. My panel joins me now to dig deeper on this. Margaret, i want to start with you in terms of the president mocking the me too movement. This is red meat for the supporters and for the opposition. Yeah. Its really hurtful and i ironic that he did that last night because it was today two years ago that Gretchen Carlson actually stepped out on a limb and filed a lawsuit against roger ales and many people credit with launching the me too movement. He is now just hired the Communications Director of the white house, somebody who worked for roger ales and who was part of keeping in place men who have mistrusted women over many, many years and its just showing that there is accountability in the me too movement and stopped at the waters edge coming to republican politicians and donald trump somehow is impermible to the criticisms and the party does not hold him accountable and its unbelievable that he can make it red meat and he can wave it around like a flag in front of a rally as though its no consequences and this kind of behavior doesnt make a real negative Lasting Impact on womens lives. Yet here we are. That is to your point the remarkable thing, john. Look. You can dress it up and say it hangs a lantern on the problem. Its really self comedy. It is not a coincidence. But this president does seem to be teflon coming to his base. We perhaps can just finally give up the hypocrisy surrounding the rhetoric of family values in the Republican Party. This president is a person who seems to have no regard for what that phrase means and no regard for precedent, predecessors. In this rally, he praised Vladimir Putin. Cant we all just get along . Take kgb no big deal. Were all fine. We had that moment. Lets play it for people who Vice President heard it. Its time to retire liberal democrat jon tester. Jon tester says one thing when hes in montana. But i will tell you im testament to it. He does the exact opposite when he goes to washington. Theyre going, will President Trump be prepared, you know, president putin is kgb and this and that. You know what . Putins fine. Hes fine. Were all fine. Spoken like a true mark. I mean i mean, you know but not surprising. In everything that we have heard, this is really the president in many ways rolling out his greatest hits, going after the same people, now the me too movement in a more open way. Right . Praising Vladimir Putin. This is all come to be expected. Yeah. Yeah. Kind of. It me its almost like hes wound up. Not on the trail for a while and needs to get his own bite of red meat and then come back. Almost like he does it more for himself. The crowds clearly love it. A piece of last night that it just i cant not say this. Right . I mean, you know what makes America Great . What makes America Great are honorable citizens that put their live tons country and willingingly die for the country like george h. W. Bush and john mccain and who he thanklessly stomped all over. That thousand points of light speech idealizes duty and sacrifice and patriotism and things donald trump cant bother to understand or thank as the occupant in the oval office and it is i think a testament to the strength of the institutions to withstand this occupant of the oval office and not capturing the values that make the country great. As a traditional conservative republican, we have seen a number of republicans come out saying, what y . Im out. The Republican Party encouraging people to vote for democrats. Are you still there . I am still a republican by golly. And i am not that kind of republican. And i am not going to make a news cycle saying poohpooh. I do not relate to this president and his values and where the party has gone in washington and do not support the people who championed this, do not call him out and who do not stand up for values. Frankly, that i mean, i still espouse and relate to them, modern conservative American Movement and shunned by the republicans in congress. But that doesnt mean i leave the party. I believe you stay in and fight and im losing right now. Its very clear im losing. Not giving up. My bride is in exile an i respected that good fight. You know, just to add to an important point. Dissing the thousand points of light speech hes insulting the heart of american conservatism. Its a voluntary spirit. Read about this. Thank you very much. I will you have him well trained. Denigrating that, he denigrates the heart of the argument and he does it callously. Time is nearly up for the Trump Administration to meet the first major family reunification deadline. The government must reconnect parents with children by phone today. This as the Justice Department admits it may need more time. Feds searching through records relying on dna tests to try to piece families back together. And just moments ago, at a hearing thats still ongoing a judge ruled parents who were already deported must also be reunited with their children who remain in the United States. Cnns Miguel Marquez reports. Reporter a 39yearold guatemalan may be the first separated parent to get out of detention after going through a normal immigration policy after President Trump signed an executive order ending the separation of families as part of the zero tolerance policy. I cant stand being apparent from my son, she says. Just give me my son. Shes not seen her 10yearold son since may 19th. She wrote him a letter. She believes he is in the same brownsville facility visited by dhs secretary nielsen last week. The deportation officers said i have to leave to go to florida to be with my family but im not leaving without my son. The uncertainty of how to get her son back is a sign that parents who are released even by the administration dont have a clear process for reuniting with their children. A woman named ada held at Port Isabel Detention Center in south texas says in a phone call to cnn she is not sure where her son is in the promise of two calls a week have never happened. No one has called, she says, social workers dont answer our calls. Im desperate. I want to know how my son is, i want to talk to him. By a federal judges order the Trump Administration has until today to put detained parents in regular contact with their kids. Parents and lawyers representing them say most have had at least one phone call, some speak really, others not at all. Its not clear the administration will meet other deadlines like reuniting kids 4 and under with parents by next tuesday a. Delegation from el salvador visiting citizens in detention yesterday at port isabel. One mother had this stunning claim. Some parents still dont know where their children are. A mother here knows the 3yearold is somewhere in new york. In documents filed in federal court, the government said it is trying to verify through dna tests and likely wont make deadlines to reunite all families. Now, the Trump Administration has said over and over again that they have a process for reuniting parents but the young woman, the 39yearold guatemalan woman at the top of the story got out of a facility in taylor, texas, yesterday. Shes now in austin trying to figure out how she contacts hhs to get her child. Shes not getting anywhere with that. And i have just spoken to her and her the people helping her out right now. Theyre going to come here to this place in brownsville tomorrow she says to knock on that door and try to get her 10yearold back. She thinks he is here. She thinks hes there. Thats the key. Thank you. As we look at this now, were learning bits and pieces from the hearing still ongoing. One of the things we have learned of these 100 or so kids under the age of 5 that we know of were just learning from the attorney for department of justice 19 of those parents of children under 5 had already been deported. This is a chaotic tragedy of this administrations own making. The question is, john, is there any sense that it is a priority . The president said this is good for me, at a rally. Yeah. Lets take the president at his word. Yesterday the hhs secretary gave a ballpark number for children. Because they dont know how many kids have been separated from their families. Next major deadline is next tuesday where they have to by court order reunite children under 5 with their families. There is no sign they have a handle on that problem. We have two children under 5. The idea they could be separated from us is so horrific and the fact that people dont have the moral imagination, the empathy, to say those could be my kids and that we know from government lawyers that there was never any plan to reunify. That is outrageous. No sign they have capacity to make it better. We are still asking the same questions now how many weeks in, right, margaret . The fact its not dealt with, speaks to the chaos in the administration and paints a picture, a disturbing picture of whether theres a will here in some parts of the administration tie directive is not coming from the top. Tone comes from the top. Not the attorney general and not the president of the United States and head of the hhs saying by golly find every child an put them back with their parents. Theres a court order, judges saying it. Equal and separate branch of government and the press. And between the media and the courts, these are going to be the mechanisms for accountability because its not coming from the executive branch. Theres a moment today Vice President pence was asked about this situation. Take a listen to that. Vice president , do you think child separations is a christian thing to do . The Vice President asked if child separation is a christian thing to do. He did not answer this question. That is administration whose own attorney general cited scripture to justify the policy of separation. Can they continue to pick and choose how they answer questions like that . How they bring faith into this equation. They can try. But i think it speaks to the extent of willing to use faith for political agendas. When Jeff Sessions moral agendas. Partisan political agendas . Moral agendas. That, too. Sorry, sorry. If you try to use faithfully and faith drives you sincerely and as i believe it does Vice President pence, have a hue of moral clarity to the politics. Have it say, not separating children from families, compassion for refugees. Like jesus, like joseph and mary were in bethlehem. To pick certain sections of leviticus, reexamine our faith and maybe get out of public service. This is a question that continues to be there and not something that republicans want to answer leading into november. Really quickly, how do they handle it . Republicans need to stand up and say this is unconscionable. Theres a policy here not clearly thought out with repercussions. Pass a law. Thats what paul ryan said. Republicans in Congress Said we could fix this with a law. Move a law to fix some of the elements of the law that would allow for a quicker reunification or put pressure on the president . Friends and fellow republicans to fix this. This is true. Not going to help republicans and i dont donald trump doesnt see that at the rally. Well continue to follow it. Margaret, john, thank you. Uk Officials Say the investigation of how a british couple came boo contact with a military grade nerve agent known as novichok could take weeks or months and believe theyre poisoned by touching a contaminated item and police have yet to narrow down what the item might be and left a small english town more on edge. Erin mclaughlin reports. Reporter this is the last time we see dawn sturgess and Charlie Rowley before they fell ill. Cnn exclusively obtained this footage of the couple arriving at a corner shop. Its time stamped friday, june 29th, 9 54 p. M. Sutrgess walks in. Picks up four conditions of beer and two bottles of wine and pace and leaves. This is the shop where they bought alcohol before continuing into the night. See just over that way, the place where dawn lives is cordoned off. The footage shows them walking in this direction toward the center of town. Where four months ago a former russian spy and his daughter found poisoned by novichok nerve agent. Authorities confirm the couple was exposed to the same substance listed as a weapons of mass destruction by the u. N. The leading line of inquiry that they handled a contaminated item somehow connected to the poisoning of scrippal and his daughter and authorities have yet to establish a direct link. Most concerning right now, authorities are not located the contaminated item. Retracing rowly and sturgess steps critical to the investigation. A friend told local media they visited stores in salisbury, bought food and a blanket from a charity shop. She made an alcohol run in the center of town. Before the couple and their friend enjoyed the afternoon drinking at a park. 10 30 p. M. , they took the bus to amesbury. By 11 00 a. M. , sturgess was critically ill. Forensic experts moved in to scour the home looking for clues to solve this mystery. Even a small trace of the nerve agent can be deadly. Authorities warn it could take months for them to figure out what exactly happened here. We were just chatting a loshort while ago at the shopkeeper and said an hour ago two investigators walked in to his shop, demanding a copy of that Surveillance Footage of the couple now part of 1,300 hours of footage. Theyre now scouring to figure out the source of that contamination. Erin, thank you. Bringing in analyst phil mudd who served in the fbi and the cia for decades. What you see these developments here, what does this tell you . Is the kremlin going after people on foreign soil or a sign that the operation fumbled and there could could be more nerve agent out there . Simple sign of recklessness. Looking at home developed the agent, only people known are russians and before them the soviet union. How can you experiment on human beings, how can you experiment in a public place you know if you poison somebody what happens if its fleleft in a public environment . These two individuals are paying the price right now four months after the initial poisoning. The former investigator analyst yourself, how do you think british officials are handling this . Approaching this. This is almost impossible. Its been four months. You need a small amount of this material. Youre talking about maybe a quarter cup to contaminate a lot of space. So in that space of four months, they have to look at every location, the individuals who placed this might have been at but think of another scenario. The friends of the individual who is are just poisoned in the past couple of days said they were dumpster divers. Looking for valuables, wine. What if the material is discarded and gone to a dump now or a park bench or a door hand snl trying to recreate that scenario where it could be anywhere in the town is almost impossible. Nato summit coming up. The question is also whether this will come up with Vladimir Putin. What should those conversations in your mind be like . Theyre not going to happen. The simple conversation would be whether youre dealing with the election meddling or dealing with a poison issue, the United States with its allies, people like the germans, french, would be talking together and saying whats our collective approach . Choosing to go down the role of things of sanctions we do it collectively. The british cant trust trump to do that. The president said i trust Vladimir Putin on election meddling and i think the conversation should be tough to the point to increase sanctions. I dont think the president s going to do that and signaled that in his rally last night praising putin. Phil mudd, always appreciate it. Thank you. Thank you.
