When chelsea corrected her, she was apologized to but made a false claim that she was a nazi. Her tweets are frequently th time it was a wildfire. Because of how racist and bizarre the comments were. So the network pugglled the plug. The ceo of disney saying there was only one thing to do here, and that was the right thing. The fallout from this may not be so simple. Not only are there millions of viewers and dollars at stake, but for many parts of conservative america, this was one of the few shows on network tv that seemed to express ideas that are felt strongly in some red states. And, brian, disney i mean, they had to make a decision here. Roseanne brought in more than 18 Million Viewers in the first episode. The Second Season was in production. Was the risk of a financial hit for keeping the show or for letting the show go greater . In other words, there might have been if they kept the show, there might have been boycotts or all that good diverse programming that abc has been working on for years, et cetera, might have been for not. Thats right. Advertisers were going to be skittish about associating themselves with roseanne. Even if they werent calling abc today demanding the show being taken off the air, it was clear the Advertiser Community was going to shun this sitcom. And thats an incredible turn of events from two weeks ago when roseanne but on stage in new york promoting the Second Season in front of hundreds of advertisers. But the bottom line is what she posted today was insulting to african americans, to muslims, jews. This was racist hate, and there was no way to come back from it. There was no way to come back from that. I think well see a backlash. This was a show embraced by trumps america, so to speak. Abc was trying to appeal to the heartland. Thats uncomfortable to acknowledge, but conspiracy theories are now often being shared by the most powerful person in the country. Just today President Trump continued his liepacked crew said. We can start with the fact that the investigation is, quote, rigged. That the special counsels team, meddling in the midterm elections. No evidence for that. Here are facts. Eight of the at least 17 lawyers on muellers team have previously donated to democrats. We should also note the investigation is being led by Robert Mueller. A registered republican first appointed fbi director by republican george w. Bush. And the investigation is overseen by the Deputy Attorney general Rod Rosenstein a republican appointed to that job by President Trump, and also the fbi director is Christopher Ray who has given money to republicans, a registered republican, appointed by President Trump. Joining me to unpack this conspiracyminded president is judi haberman. Maggie haberman. The Mueller Probe has resulted in 75 criminal charges. 22 people and companies charged. Were defending to a large extent, remember, were defending here it is for Public Opinion, because eventually the decision here is going to be impeach, not impeach. It did this thing weve seen him do consistently since the campaign. Claim the system is rigged in some way and then use the term meddled. Thats being used to define what the russian government did according to the u. S. Intelligence community and the question that mueller is looking into is whether that was with the knowledge of trump and or his campaign. And so he takes these things that are said about him, and he mirrors them back onto his critic. Hes very good about appropri e appropriating language and trying to turn it into something for himself. This is not candidate trump talking about things that appeal to the rand paul voters anymore. This is the president of the United States, and it gives it Roseanne Barr and President Trump both traffic in conspiracy theories and in bigotry. And its unmistakable. Abc entertainment, they did what a lot of Republican Leaders arent willing to do. They said thats it. Too much. True. Its funny. Julie davis who wrote the piece with me, we spoke to several republicans. Among them, lindsey graham, who during the campaign talked about how the president then candidate donald trump was giving rise to quote, unquote, cooks. Something to that effect. He was talking about the president having wildly outlandish statements. He disapproved of them and thought they were a problem. When we asked him about how he viewed the president s claims about a spy being embedded in his campaign, his response is well, this is something we have to look into. The president has shifted the Republican Party toward him. Everything with this president is about bending people or institutions to his will. That includes the gop congress. Theres a group of people who know better. Republicans on capitol hill, and some people in the media who know that the president is saying things that are not true. And are willing to grab onto whatever kernel of truth might be in there, for instance, t confidential source the fbi used. We should all learn more about that, and if theres anything improper, we should know about that, but to turn it into obama sent spies on my campaign nd what do you make of this mueller is going to be meddling in the midterm elections . What is the point of that . Is it to undermine the legitimacy of the midterms in case democrats win . I think its two things. In the fall of 2016 when he talked about how they had to pay a lot of close attention, because there were certain areas where there was going to be voter fraud. This is similar. That you cant let the probe go too far into the fall because then if youre mueller you risk being accused of influencing the elections if you issue a report later than a certain date in september, thats not surprising to say a lawyer say. The president is delivering it with no nuance. Its ripped from any context, so theres a dual meaning. The president also today seemed to acknowledge his own obsession with the Mueller Probe. He said i have to start focusing my energy on rebuilding the military and north korea and not on the rigged russia. Et cetera. But this is a guy who has been tweeting nonstop all memorial day weekend about the russia investigation. I think two things. I think he is consumed by it and he thinks his attacks are working. The bright side could be the tweet you read is the first apology ive heard him give about anything. Look at it that way. Thats one interpretation, i suppose. Its a very charitable interpretation.
