Attacks from the man once regarded as americas dad. Cosby is now 80 years old and faces 30 years in prison. Lets go do cnns jean casarez in norristown, pennsylvania. Jean, cosby, he had ugly words for prosecutors after the verdict. Reporter very much so because after the jury left the prosecutor stands up and he wants to revoke the bail of bill cosby, 1 million bail. And remand him into custody because he said these are serious felonies and concerned to flee the jurisdiction. And that is one of the bases for revoking bail and the judge then said, why . And he said, because, your honor, he has several residences around the country and a private plane. Bill cosby then stood up and in the loudest booming voice in a packed courtroom that was absolutely silent at the moment he said, he doesnt have a plane you asshole, directly to the elected state attorney that got those three guilty verdicts just minutes before. Tell me about the survivors of his assault. What reaction did you notice from them . Well, when the verdict rang out, nobody, nobody thought there was going to be a guilty verdict. The jurys deliberating. You dont know what theyre really discussing in that deliberation room. But there was virtually no one that believed guilty verdict. What i heard was hung jury again. A mistrial. That was really the prevailing thought. When those guilty, guilty, guilty rang out in that courtroom, some of the accusers, those women that have traveled from all over the country to come here to watch this trial because they say they, too, have been drugged and asauled bill cosby, they let out an ah like that in the courtroom. It was brief but it was loud. You heard it. And they were escorted from the courtroom. The decorum order in place. They were escorted from the courtroom but then moments later the proceeding ended. Two days ago, jean, jurors heard a deposition given in 2005. Thats when Andrea Constand sued cosby. How important was that when it comes to todays verdict . Reporter well, obviously, this case is all about credibility. Who do you believe . Do you believe bill cosby or do you believe Andrea Constand . Those were the two main players here and the deposition by bill cosby and it took almost two hours for that deposition to be read back. And the portions that were in the trial. But it talked about he said in his own words that he from the moment he saw her he liked her. He wanted her and he was trying to gain permission and he detailed explicitly sexually what they did together. And actually in a poetic tense but it was all consensual. Now, ironically, andrea diagrammed almost exactly factually the same thing except saying that she was drugged and assaulted. So right there you have a he said she said. You got to believe someone. But overall ending of that deposition that was read last night not only that he had seven prescriptions of quaaludes he gave to women, he wanted to have sex with, but when asked about the benadryl in the deposition, the question was, did you tell andrea it was benadryl . It was over the counter. Did you tell her mother it was benadryl . No, i didnt. You told her mother you were going to the prescription bottles to see what it was and you would mail it to her what it was. Did you do that . No. The jury was left last night with this over the counter medication thats one of the safest ones around, thats what an expert testified in the trial, he wouldnt tell them what it was. That was something that had to weigh over on the side of the prosecution. Jean, now, now bill cosby faces sentencing. A decade in prison potentially for each count, three counts. When is the sentencing going to take place . Reporter the judge will determine the date. That is not determined yet but there are a couple of assessments that have to be done. First of all, there is a pretrial sentencing report done where scoring is done to determine how many years he should serve in prison. Remember, hes 80 years old at this point and he also has been convicted of three extremely serious felonies. Aggravated indecent Sexual Assault and theres also a Sexual Assault assessment that will be done to him, sexually violent predator assessment and will be a registered sex offender at this point. Bill cosby, the person so many people in this country adored, followed, americas dad name as years went on. Jean casarez, thank you so much. More than four dozen women said that bill cosby committed sexual crimes against them, some women were in court today. Five of them testified. Take a listen to some of what they had to say. Thank you, thank you, thank you. We are vindicated. We are validated and we are now part of the tsunami of womens power and justice. We are not shutting up and were not going away. Get over it. Today this jury has shown that the me too what the me too movement is saying is that women are worthy of being believed. And i thank the jury. Joining me now is christina ruely saying crosby drugged and assaulted her in 1965, the first known survivor of bill cod bys predeliction for Sexual Assault and joins us. Christina, 1965. This is a very Long Time Coming for somebody seeking justice such as you. How are you feeling today . I am, of course, as exhilarated as any of the others. But the real feeling because of the time is of a confirmation that i have that in our system i guess we saw it in watergate. I hope well see it in other instances. But it was a confirmation that the Justice System can work. I was also a jane doe and actually was one of the 19 women who were on the prior bad acts witnesses and thankfully i wasnt chosen. But i dont think that this would have happened but for the help of the media. I have to say that when i was first being interviewed i said, because he was not speaking to the media. I said, by his silence he has ceded his power to his victims and the media. And we ran with it. Let me ask cnn had not stuck with us with if the media had not been as tenacious as the other all the other victims had been not as tenacious as they were this wouldnt have happened. You, your station and many, many others, the newspapers, gave us a voice. The worst thing that happens when you are a sexual victim is this feeling of voicelessness. Yeah. And thats one of the jobs of the media, obviously, to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comforted comfortable. Lets ask you how much do you think this verdict happened because of the awakening that this nation has had because of the me too movement and the times up movement . Women have the courage, women such as you to have the courage to come forward. Do you think that was we have no way of knowing, obviously, but do you think that might have played a role in the verdict . Oh, yes. I definitely do. One of the things thats rather ironic in that and you think about the lgbt movement and how quickly that actually happened and now this is happening very quickly. We were the earthquake. Okay . Theres going to be a lot of aftershocks. If youve been in california youre going to have lots more earthquakes. But i think that these women made a lot of difference. One one of them in particular struck me because of what happened in court today and that was heidi thomas. She said that as he was assaulting her he was shouting and referring to himself in the third person. He did that in court today. He said he doesnt have a plane. So i think that those women who all had the same pattern helped a great deal because otherwise you just looking at a bunch of trees and cant see that its a forest. All right. Congratulations on this feeling of consummation and justice that you have achieved and thank you to you and all the brave women who came forward to share your stories years and years of people sniping and attacking you and yet you achieved justice today so congratulations to you for that. Now im gonna tell my momma that im a traveller im gonna follow the sun now im gonna tell my momma that im a traveller im gonna follow the sun transitions™ light under control™ breaking news just in moments ago. The white house just relowesing unbelievable photos that now confirmed secretary of state mike pompeo shaking hands with north koreas gym jongun from earlier this year. President trump talked about these very photos telling fox news, quote, we have incredible photos of them talking and meeting and id love to release. If we can, ill do that. Actually, it is not a bad idea. That interview highlighting the president s governance by gut causing indigestion this afternoon for his own white house with his cabinet in a state of semichaos, President Trump called in a favorite cable show fox friends and blew off steam about several topics and seemed as if he thought it was a private conversation and it was not. Comments he made about his Attorney Michael Cohen you should criminal investigation, a topic about which perhaps he should be discrete. Those comments landed in a legal filing later with new york prosecutor citing his words in the case involving cohen and Stormy Daniels, the porn star claiming to have been threatened. Well talk to her attorney in a minute. The president broached many topics including dr. Ronny jackson who minutes before bowed out to be nominee of department of veterans administration. Charges that the president has blamed on democrats. The democrats are obstructionists. It is horrible what theyre doing. Theyre not approving people. The president also threatened to, quote, big price to pay for the ranking democrat on the Senate VeteransAffairs Committee of montana. The republican chairman of the committee senator isakson because the hearings on hold because of concerns and the fact that the biggest problem in the nomination was in the nomination itself. Jackson picked not because he was the most qualified for the job but the president likes him and thinks him loyal. He has a perfect record. He has a beautiful record, unblemished. His son ask a wonderful boy, goes to annapolis at the top of his class. One of the finest cadets. None of which, of course, is a credential to be the secretary of the va. And in addition, of course, as we all know the white house did no vetting of this candidate and was utterly shockingly unfairly to dr. Jackson unprepared for the charges against him, ones the president called fake today. But no serious response from the white house. Jackson is expected to be on as the white house physician as for now and then for officials the epa administrator pruitt appears to be on thinner an thinner ice. Lawmakers blasting him for the big spending with the top democrat on the house energy and Commerce Committee saying this. Unfit to hold Public Office and undeserving of the public trust. However, many conservatives seem to like pruitts deregulatory regime quite a bit and given the ugly headlines many white house sources acknowledge he would not have lasted so long in any other administration and still there because President Trump likes pruitt and continues to defend him in private. Even against the advice of top aides who see pruett as undermining the Trump Administration. Theres that gut feeling again. Cnns pamela brown picks up the coverage of the president s airing of grievances. Reporter President Trump today defending the pick of veterans affairs. He is a great man and he got treated very, very unfairly. He got treated really unfairly. Hes a hell of a man, too. He is not taking any questions. Thank you, guys. Reporter dr. Ronny jackson withdrew his name today amid allegations ranging from drunken behavior on the job to mishandling prescription drugs. Jackson saying in a statement the allegations against me are completely false and fabricated. If they they have any merit i would not have been selected, promoted and serving in a sensitive role as physician to three president s over the past 12 years. After jon tester detailed the allegations against jackson to the media, the president threatened his political future. I think jon tester has to have a big price to pay in montana because i dont think people in montana the admiral is the kind of person that they respect and admire. And they dont like seeing whats happened. Trump also critical of fbi director james comey in the wide ranging phone interview today. Did a great thing for the American People by firing him. I love the fbi. The fbi loves me. But the top people in the fbi headed by comey were crooked. Reporter the president also had ominous words for his own Justice Department. And our Justice Department, which i try and stay away from, but some point i wont. Our Justice Department should be looking at that kind of stuff, not the nonsense of collusion with russia. There is no collusion with me and russia. All right. And everyone knows it. Reporter but today members of the president s own party again warned him from doing anything to interfoou fear with the special counsels russia investigation. The president will do what he wants to do i think. And i just he doesnt want to do this. I think ill advised. Be very careful. I mean, its a serious thing to do that. And he better make sure he knows what he is doing. Reporter the president today also wading into the Stormy Daniels case saying for the first time his Attorney Michael Cohen is representing him in the matter. Percentage of my overall legal work a tiny, tiny little fraction but michael would represent me and represent me on some things. He represents me like with this krar si Stormy Daniels deal. He represented me. You know, from what i see he did absolutely nothing wrong. In the hours following that interview the president s own words were being used against him by prosecutors in new york and the cohen case saying the fact that the president said Michael Cohen represents him in a tiny fraction of legal cases proves their point that relatively few documents seized in the cohen raid would be protected by Attorney Client privilege unlike what lawyers for trump and cohen arguing in court. Jake . Pamela brown, thank you. We have a lot to talk in. Lets dive in with the panel. When asked if he wants to talk to special counsel Robert Mueller, margaret, President Trump said if i can. If i can. This governance by gut saying whatever is on his mind, doing whatever is on his mind, isnt this what his lawyers are exactly worried about appearing with Robert Mueller, saying whatever . Yes. Thats precisely. Thats why he has lawyers and frankly he needs them. Thats why you have people like Rudy Giuliani saying we want to see if muellers sincere an in his interest to get to the bottom and bogus. Rudy giuliani knows Robert Mueller. They have a 30year history in the Justice Department. They know that muellers serious and to be respected and again playing this role of kind of containing the president and trying to distract the president. Nobody wants if youre the president s lawyer to put the president in front of Robert Mueller. Talk about the xhnt that margarets referring to. Rudy giuliani speaking to the wall street journal says does the special prosecutor really have an open mind . We are trying to assess their good faith. The president is convinced that if he tells the story to a decent, fair minded arbitor the whole thing will be over. A preposterous that Rudy Giuliani thinks he is the arbiter of whether mueller has an open mind and acting within good faith. He is doing a job he was asked to do and doing it well by most accounts and thoroughly and the idea that Rudy Giuliani of all people who we know was under some kind of fbi investigation for what he knew about the new york fbi leaks, james comey told us that, that he is going to somehow be the one to look into the eyes of mueller and sees that he is a decent man. This is a crazy notion. And its just a game. It is just more gamesmanship. Alex, what is the job of Rudy Giuliani . He hasnt practiced this type of criminal law in quite sometime. Is he here to be the man to negotiate with Robert Mueller . Is he here to put on a public face of this for the president s base . What is the job exactly . Sort of all of the above. And on top of that he used the word honest broker to describe potentially Robert Mueller. I think he is somebody the president sees as an honest broker, right . We have seen President Trump cycle through a number of attorneys and sort of lost patience with and lost faith in. Rudy giuliani is somebody to have a personal relationship with and as we saw in the Ronny Jackson affair it matters more than anything else. With rudy, you have to think everything hes saying is publicly and communicating with the president directly. Its not about what he says about mueller because rudy and mueller know each other. Mueller doesnt care what rudy says in public but he can bring down the temperature between the special counsel and the president with the unique relationships of both. Dr. Ronny jackson, the president S White House physician who was nominated somewhat inexplicably to be va secretary withdrew his nomination today. Take a listen to President Trump during take your kids to work day what he had to say about this pulled nomination and admiral jackson. Hes a great man. Got treated very, very unfairly. He got treated really unfairly. Hes a hell of a man, too. You know whos treated unfairly . The veterans of america. Thats whos treated unfairly. This man had no business being nominated. It is like we were saying, one reason, the president trusts him. He gave the president a really, really nice clean bill of time. Said he would live to be 200. We could all be so lucky. But, you know, its unfair its unfair that not a medical diagnosis. I dont think theres any science involved right there. But our veterans deserve better and always did and all this news is terrible. But he was really unqualified before this terrible news came out and no business being there. Beyond the qualification issue were the allegations made about him and as covering confirmation battles since the 1990s, i have never seen a white house so unprepared to answer questions. You know what it reminded me of in when the mccain campaign, john mccain, god bless him wherever he is now, and asked about subpoearah palin and they didnt know about her almost and this is what it reminded me of. Look. To the extent that dr. Jackson was treated unfairly, by people, i think he was treated you could say treated unfairly by the white house and a reason why when you ask somebody to go in front of the senate, vet them, make sure theyre not completely humiliated and didnt happen here. Not at all. If the allegations are true, obviously, theres responsibility on dr. Jackson not tooking out for himself in this process but, you know, i dont recall any other nomination and we have seen a whole bunch of problematic nominations in this Administration Quite so unvetted, unfocused and just sort of reckless. I couldnt agree more. Reminds me of name escaping me. Only time in a white house i was involved in was when president bush decided to recommend the staff secretary. Harriet meyers. Thats what happens when youre not prepared. Senate confirmation and dont have everything and trying to do a favor for a friend. They deserve better. They all deserve better. And the question of whether or not he should continue as the head physician at the white house i think still looms large even if the matter is settled. That for congress because they dont have any sort of supervisory role at the white house. He is accused of hostile work environment. Accused of Sexual Harassment and overprescribing and mystery prescriptions to go to him. If these things are true and he deserves benefit of the doubt we want do get to the bottom of it. I dont mean to convict him prematurely, if true, no, he cannot serve in that capacity at all. Epa administrator scott pruitt on capitol hill today and contradicted what he said earlier to ed henry on fox news about knowing about pay raises given to staff working around the white house. Listen to what he told fox news three weeks ago. Theyre friends of you. They serve an important person. You didnt know they got the pay raises. Not until yesterday. And then this is scott pruitt today. Did you, administrator, authorize mr. Jackson to sign the documents for you . Congressman, those were delegated to and to mr. Jackson and Inspector General did reference that in his management alert so he did he did you did authorize him then to sign them . Those those decisions, that decision was made by yes or no . Did you authorize him . There are delegations with that authority. Pruitt said that the pay raise was delegated to his chief of staff. Several senior officials told cnn they knew that he lied to fox and were stunned that he contradicted himself under oath today. Alex, is the president going to care . Look. I couldnt tell you whether the president will care. A lot of people who are totally supportive of the agenda that scott pruitt is pushing at the epa deregulatory agenda. Beginning to question whether he outlived the usefulness. The most adamant defenders said the haters out to get him at the epa. It is not clear that he is he can really be effective in the role pursuing that same agenda. Stick around. We have more to talk about, the sheriff in charge in the parkland shooting may be unseated by his own deputies. That story next. When i received the diagnoses, i knew at that exact moment. Breaking news in the National Lead now. A huge blow this afternoon to embattled sheriff israel facing criticism for the response to the Parkland High School shooting. The deputies in the department minutes ago voted overwhelmingly they have no confidence in the leadership abilities, you might remember he bragged to me 11 days after the shooting. Ive given amazing leadership to this agency. Amazing leadership . I work yes, jake. This theres a lot of things we have done throughout. This is you dont measure a persons leadership by a deputy not going in to a these deputies received the training they needed. Maybe you measure leadership by whether or not they protect the community. I want to bring in cnns rosa flores in florida. Rosa, what does this mean and tell us about the governor of florida responding. Reporter you know, the govern nor of florida is responding. Ill get to that in a moment, jake. I have to tell you that multiple deputies and the president of the union told me that that moment that you just played right now, that took a lot of deputies over the edge. And encouraged them to go forward with this vote of no confidence against sheriff scott israel which the results were just tallied. 85 of those deputies who voted, voted for no confidence. Now, as you mentioned the governor of florida coming forward and saying that hes going to wait for the fdle investigation to conclude before he goes forward. Saying in a statement, quote, once that investigation is complete and we have all of the facts the appropriate steps will be taken to hold people accountable. Now, i should add that the president of the union has said that he plans to take this vote to the governor and ask him to remove the sheriff. Now, the governor doesnt have the power to remove the sheriff but according to state law the governor does have the power to suspend the sheriff and that would go to the state senate who has the power to either reinstate the sheriff or remove him. But again, the breaking news, jake, here 85 of the deputies who voted, voted for no confidence voted no confidence for sheriff israel. Rosa flores in broward county, florida, thank you so much. And our Justice Department which i try and stay away from but at some point i wont. President trump unleashed. Leveling several attacks against his own fbi and his own Justice Department in an interview with fox friends this morning threatening it appears to interfere in ongoing investigations but hours later his attorney general Jeff Sessions had this to say. Let me say with all the strength i can muster that no nation has a finer group of law officers than those who comprise the fbi, the dea, the atf and the United States marshal service. Quite a contradiction. Joining me is analyst phil mudd working for the fbi and cia. Phil, great to have you. I would guess that attorney general sessions knew exactly what he was doing. What do you think . I agree. He knows hes in direct opposition to the president of the United States. I mean, these issues are beyond politics, beyond republicans and democrats. Theres a profound issue here of rule of law. If you go to the third world, jake, there is an issue that you can deal with in the third world and thats if a politician says i put the scales of justice and whos looked at by federal authorities. In this country, we have a different proposition above politics. You wake up in the morning, putt the pants on one leg at a time and go to pee and dp youre did dogcatcher or the mayor if youre busted for speeding you get treated the same way. The message of the president of the United States in the democracy is if im the president and i dont like the way im treated by Law Enforcement i get treated different than the dogcatcher. In this country it is not about politics. You dont get to do that and what the attorney general just said, sorry, im with the people, not with the president. So let me ask you, phil. Seems to be that you interpret the president saying he wont stay away from the Justice Department necessarily, you interpret that as President Trump saying he may fire the attorney general or Deputy Attorney general Rod Rosenstein or special counsel mueller . It is more substantial than that. Give me a break. Youre the general manager of a Football Team and say the team on the field is horrible. Whos responsible for that . The president saying he wont stay away from the Justice Department. Who appointed the attorney general and the Deputy Attorney general . The attorney general has recused himself from the russia investigation. The Deputy Attorney general has not or authorized the investigation but offered documentation to continue the investigation. Who nominated those people . The president suggesting he doesnt have a responsibly for the team on the field. Excuse me. He appointed them phil, earlier today President Trump denied he ever told then fbi director james comey that he didnt spend the night in russia in the 2013 miss yurngs pageant. Take a listen. Gio to russia. Now, i didnt go there. The logs there. The planes are there. He said i didnt stay there. Of course i stayed there. I stayed there very short period of time. But of course i stayed. His memo said i left immediately. I never said that. I never said i left immediately. Lets play for you what comey told Anderson Cooper last night at a town hall saying he claimed he never stayed in moscow and the president did stay there. Take a listen. Its always significant when someone lies to you, especially about something youre not asking about, tends to reflect a consciousness of guilt as we would say in Law Enforcement. Let me ask you. Who do you believe . Comey or the president . Do you think the president told comey i never spent a night in moscow . I do. I think we are confusing two questions. That is whether we agree with the approach former fbi director comey is taking to this problem. In my judgment he is way too political. A second question whether when he wrote down the facts of the conversations with the president whether you look at somebody we would have called in the cia as a serial fabricator, somebody that makes stuff up, the president of the United States, or whether you agree with a career federal prosecutor to go before judges and juries. I think mr. Comeys approach to this problem becoming too political is inappropriate. I think his approach to the facts is far beyond what i would expect from the president of the United States. I believe comey. I dont believe the president. One final moment. You want to know where people dont want including the president s lawyers people dont want to put the president in front of prosecutors . Because the president will stand in front of director mueller and make stuff up. You can do that on twitter. You cant do that in front of a prosecutor. Comeys right. The president s wrong. I want to ask you before you go, phil, you speak with former colleagues at the fbi im sure all the time. What do they have to say about the president attacking institutions like the fbi, the Justice Department and essentially in the view of many people ive talked to assaulting the entire judiciary . You know, you would think this is a political question, about republicans versus democrats. I talked to my friends all the time, a few of them today. The question is about whether in a country thats divided by politics its divided by issues about race, thats divided about issues about red state, blue state, the question is whether you wake up in the morning, the bureaucracy in the country, thats the police, state and local police and the fbi treat you equally whether youre the president or whether youre the dogcatcher as i mentioned earlier. What the president is trying to suggest as a man responsible for leading the bureaucracy is we dont get treated equally f. Youre the president , i say you cant investigate me and if youre the mayor or the dogcatcher, sorry, you get screwed. Thats what he is telling me. A lot of Law Enforcement officials current and former fbi officials i know are conservative. They trend conservative. Yes. Do they are they rethinking their Political Alliances at all . Not that theyre becoming democrats but rethinking the Political Alliance who is are conservative and republican given the fact that the republican president of the United States with very little protest from republicans in Congress Keeps attacking Law Enforcement . Let me figure out how to capture this for you, jake. Spending 25 years in Government People would be critical of president obama. They would be critical of president bush. It was a fairly benign criticism. You might hear it around the table. Why didnt president obama intervene more aggressively in syria . What was president bush doing in iraq . The conversations i hear today are different. Theyre not about politics. Theyre about a national embarrassment. When i talk to friends in the business and i also talk to colleagues and foreign intelligence and Security Services overseas, they look at a president who makes fun of judges, who makes fun of women, who talks about rocket man and then says this guy is an honorable man, thats kim jongun and they say how did america get to this place . Its about people saying how did we get here . All right, phil mudd, thank you for your thoughts and time, sir. Appreciate it. Will the Trump Administration go for it . Thats next. No matter when you retire, your income doesnt have to. See how lincoln can help ensure you still have income every month of your retirement, guaranteed, at lincolnfinancial. Com. In our health lead today, dr. Gupta is hoping to convince attorney general Jeff Sessions to legalize medical marijuana. Writing, quote, sometimes it is the only thing that works. I changed my mind and certain you can, as well. It is time for safe and regulated medical marijuana to be made available nationally. Joining me now is chief medical correspondent dr. Sanjay gupta. Thank you for joining us. So i spoke with a bio tech expert who told me because we were talking about this marijuana as a possible substitute or solution to the Opioid Epidemic and said its not Strong Enough as a painkiller to be able to serve as a true substitute for opioids. It treats some pain better than others. Neuropathic pain, nerve pain, pins and needles sen station that people get in response to an injury, trauma, for example. Theres something else, jake. I learned while filming this, this documentary and that is both opioiden and cannabis interfere with pain signals to the brain. Cannabis in addition seems to decrease inflammation and oftentimes a source of the pain, as well. Big thing, jake, it doesnt affect the brain stem and doesnt cause people to die of overdose. What would you say that those that say using a drug still illegal on the federal level and illegal in many states to help fight drug addiction, its problematic an maybe doesnt make any sense . I would say this. This drug, cannabis, should not be illegal medicinally. Its a schedule 1 substance because its preordained and this is a legal thing, not a medical thing, preordained as a high abuse potential. Same as heroin or cocaine. The studies dont bear that out and listed as something with no medicinal benefit and the science doesnt bear that out. And your feelings about on the record for a while. And in fact, you have written an open letter to the attorney general Jeff Sessions advocating that he allow marijuana to be used as a treatment for opioid addiction and also for pain. I did. There was a couple of things i wanted to convey. First of all, these are desperate times with regard to this Opioid Epidemic. Its the worst selfinflicted epidemic in u. S. History. Cannabis can have a real role here, treat the withdrawal people suffer from trying to come off of opioids and help heal the brain in that brain disease that causes people to be unable to just say no.
