He worked as a contractor for booz allen hamilton. He had a top security clearance. They arrested him in august but kept the arrest secret while trying to figure out the damage that was done. Another major blow for the nsa after snowden who also worked for booz hamilton. Theyve been trying to mitigate the threat they say they have from these socalled insiders. Do the Law Enforcement officials think he was acting on his own for working with a Foreign Government . The investigation is ongoing. They dont know what motivated him. They dont really believe he was working for the russians or any foreign spy service. We got a statement from his attorney. In part, there is no part that hall martin betrayed his country. Kaine prosecuted trump asking pence to document comments that hes made. Pence more often than not did not offer a defense insisting instead that the comments had not been made. Dana bash is here with me in washington. Observers widely rate pence won last night but there are reports that trump may not be happy because pence did not defend him strongly enough. Thats right. Of course, donald trump wanted his running mate to do well, but perhaps not at the expense of defending him at all costs. Trying to translate trumps language into more palatable rhetoric has been pences main role since he was picked. The indiana governor took that to another level at times last night, seeming to reshape some of trumps policies. Mike pence could teach a master class in the art of deflection. Why the disconnect with your running mates . There is a reason why people question the trust worthiness of Hillary Clinton. Donald trump and i would never support legislation that punished women who made the heartbreaking choice to end a pregnancy. Why did donald trump say that . Just never would . Why would he say that . Look, he is not a polished politician like you and Hillary Clinton. Pence repeatedly neglected a key part of the running mates job. Defending the candidate who put you on the ticket. Highlighting that gulf was kaines strategy from the start. I said six times tonight to pence, i dont know how you can defend your running mates position on one issue or another. He took his im different from trump performance so far, he contradicted the candidate on critical issues, like on russia. Dont take the bait. We knew watching the tapes that senator kaine would spend his time trying to detract from the real question. At some points i scratched my head and said do you remember what the question senator kaine was actually asked . I played senator kaine in the debate. Tried to go at mike pence and donald trump over and over again. Thats almost exactly what you saw almost word for word in our prep is what we heard from tim kaine last night. They think and their focus groups that if they attack, attack, attack they can win. Mike pence showed america he is ready not just to be the president if something awful were to happen to the president , but to be a Vice President who will help donald trump actually get things done. Its definitely true and indisputable that governor pence stayed with broader themes while tim kaine tried to get governor pence to defend things that trump said. Throughout the debate pence insisted, responding to kaine, that donald trump never said things that donald trump did say. Take, for example, on nuclear weapons. Take a listen. More nations should get nuclear weapons. Try to defend that. He never said that, senator. He is absolutely has said it. Saudi arabia, south korea, japan. North korea has nukes. Japan has a problem with that. I mean, they have a big problem with that. Maybe they would in fact be better off if they defend themselves from north korea. With nukes . Would be better off. Including with nukes. So this happened again and again on whether or not mr. Trump called or a Deportation Force, whether trump believes in punishment for women who have abortions, on praise of putin. I understand you consider that taking the bait, but by denying that trump said things that he said, didnt he kind of create an alternate reality version of donald trump . No. I think mikes point in all this was that the context was different than what senator kaine was sayingme. With putin weve talk about this many times before. He doesnt admire putin for being a leader. He was pointing out how weak he thought president obamas leadership was and that was a failure. That was a point mike pence made over and over. Were weaker not just because of this president but because of Hillary Clintons policies and when donald trump and he are president and Vice President theyll change that. I think his point was not that he didnt say those things but that senator kaine was repeatedly selectively taking things out of context or even some of the comments he made about people coming from mexico. Kaine tried to suggest it was a broad brush. Mike pences reaction was, no, he talked about people who came here and committed illegal acts. Many of whom donald trump and mike pence have met with families victimized by the select few who have caused those sorts of problems. It wasnt painting everyone with a broad brush. Listen to how pence rebutted kaine late in the debate. You whipped out the mexican thing again. He look, can you can you defend it . There are criminal aliens in this country, tim, who have come in illegally who are perpetrating violence and taking american lives. He also said and many are good people. You keep leaving that out of your quote. So i dont know how much you know about this, but whipped out that mexican thing, which is what governor pence said. This is now a big deal in latino media. And its being used to suggest that mike pences answer was a little bit more glib than it should have been, that it was dismissing how latinos, many of them were deeply offended by trumps remarks in his kickoff speech. Whats your response to that . I think, having watched it, here was somebody who brought it up multiple times. Tim kaine clearly had the attack dog role. Former dnc chair. His objective was to come in and say things as many times as he could over and over. At one point he even said i said it six times. No matter the question, he was going to say certain things. In this case i think mike pence reacted and said, i dont care how many times youve brought it up, whatever the issue had been. Whether it would have been about individuals coming from mexico, about russia, whether it had been any of the other talking points that tim kaine had. His reaction was youve said it so many times let me talk about it. Most americans said i think, hey, there is a distinction between people who have come here and committed Violent Crimes and vicious acts against american citizens versus many others he didnt paint with the same brush. I thought he made it very clear. Do you think donald trump should do debate prep with you and governor pence so his performance is more on message and more reassuring than his reviews were for the first debate . I dont know about doing it with me. I can tell you unquestionably i have done it before oos a governor. Gubernatorial candidate and this last month with mike pence. People mistakenly think debate prep is putting words in your mouth. Its the opposite. It helps you to stay focused on who you are, what you believe in, and not get drawn off by things meant to sidetrack you. Thats part of the reason why i thought it was successful. He showed the kind of person he is. His empathy and his rational sense and what it means to be a common sense conservative. Any sort of preparation like that that donald trump could have would allow him as well to stay on message and not be distracted from some of the other messages that really americans dont care about. Trump have to say . Reporter he just wrapped up the rally a few meemenoments ag. He was out talking here in nevada before taking the stage saying that pence was the one who won on the issues. When he spoke to the crowd about pence he almost seemed to take credit for pences performance. Mike pence did an incredible job. And i am getting a lot of credit because thats really my first socalled choice. That was my first hire, as we would say in las vegas. And ill tell you, he is a good one. He was phenomenal. I would argue that mike had the single most decisive victory in the history of advise president ial debates. Reporter jake, as i am sure youve heard there were some reports out there that perhaps donald trump was unhappy with some of the things that happened postdebate, meaning some of the commentators who were out there basically saying that pence is a better debater and he didnt do a very good job at defending trump. No sign of that here. We should also say that the campaign flatly denied that. At this rally, all praise for pence. Next, of course, is the town hall debate. Mr. Trump making an effort to get familiar with that setting. How is he preparing . Reporter right. And as many people out there already know, the next debate format will be a town hall format. The campaign really feels as though this is Donald Trumps sweet spot, that he does well in these types of formats. That he is good one on one with people. They feel as though Hillary Clinton is not. And you know, he has gone 180 degrees against what Reince Priebus and paul ryan and all the leaders of the party decided the party needed to do after the 2012 election. Which was emphasize free trade. Outreach latinos to the hispanic community. Reach out to women and people of color and ethnic communities. Donald trump has done the opposite of that. There was a poll from colorado, a cnn poll, before the president ial debate, it showed clinton behind trump in a fourway race. Clinton 41, trump 42. Johnson, weld, 13. Stein 3. Without the third parties, trump clinton 49, trump, 47. I wonder if youre feeling pressure from democrats who feel you might be the ralph nader of 2000 winning enough votes to deliver it for donald trump. I am getting a lot of free legal advice from democrats, some i know and some i dont, sending me emails and telephone calls at private numbers saying get off the ticket. It will be a shame and a disgrace if trump is elected. They dont want millennial votes peeled off from mrs. Clinton. Who is telling you that . Everybody wants us off the ticket. Its flattering in a way. I like to go hunting where the ducks are. I am a duck hunter. There are more ducks to be hundred dollar on the republican side of the aisle. Ill focus on mr. Trumps Foreign Policy analysis without failing to say i think the fiscal and military policies of mrs. Clinton are not whats called for here. Who is putting the pressure on you . Who is telling you that . A lot of them are people i dont know. There was an article in the New York Times about how nervous everybody was about mrs. Clinton possibly losing the election. After the first poll came up showing mr. Trump up by five points in ohio. People did the math and didnt like what they saw. A lot of my friends are from new york and are democrats. I heard from a lot of them. I also heard from a lot of people whom i didnt know who said, youre going to be a disgrace if trump wins this election. If trump wins this election it will be for a lot of reasons. Why do you think youre winning millennial votes . Why do you think so many young voters who would normally vote for the democratic ticket but are going for you . The overarching message of freedom and liberty. Some of the voters are not yet in the workforce. Theyre not so troubled by fiscal and financial issues. They really want to choose their own work life balance. I see this even in my role for occasionally participating in hiring decisions of young people at my law firm and business firm. They want to make choices in their own lives. Thats a really resonant message from the Libertarian Party and the libertarian ticket. I think thats the a major reason. There are a lot of republicans, i have heard, out there who wish that you were on the top of the ticket. Gary johnson has had some gaffes and stumbles in interviews. Is that ever anything that you and governor johnson talk about, you being on the top of the ticket and him being Vice President . No. I must say, i think the recent slips have been more pop quiz errors by gary. I have known him since we were governors together in the 90s. He is a strong guy. He was a strong governor. He moved mexico as much to the right on fiscal issue as i did massachusetts. When i took over, massachusetts was still called tax achusetts. And 21 tax cuts later, surprise, surprise, it wasnt. We have similar politics. We are Close Friends and were in this to win. Above all, were in this to serve our country. With all due respect, sir, i dont know if they were pop quizzes. Just knowing what aleppo is. Its been in the news for months and months, years really, having an idea of a world leader that you admire. I mean, those arent like who is the foreign minister of poland type questions. Theyre legitimate questions. Okay. Ill give you that. We would like to have those two sentences back. No question. Donald trump was reportedly not happy that mike pence didnt support him for. What do you think of this idea thats out there that pence was maybe debating more as mike pence 2020 president ial candidate than as 2016 Vice President ial candidate . I think its premature for any politician to think about 2020. What i like that mike pence did last night is presented a framework for republicans to use when it comes to donald trump. Mike pence won the debate last night because he didnt fight that fight. He didnt defend trump. He pivoted every question about trump to Hillary Clinton and the democrats. He went on offense the whole time. He didnt get caught to the trump trap. That may hurt republicans feelings but if donald trump wants to win, people in states like ohio, wisconsin, new hampshire. Thats what they have to do. There was going to be so much coverage and there has been today of things that pence said trump didnt say, that trump did say. So im wondering if that was maybe a smart strategy for the night but not necessarily for the ticket. I think it was smart for the ticket. What scott walker said made a lot of sense, which is to say that he was not saying that these things were never said. The context was wrong. That kaine as presenting it as. He was taking trumps statements out of context and presenting them as fact. Its a point weve seen democrats do repeatedly during this cycle. The mexican comment is a good example of that. What he did was brilliant, i think. Denying it and making us now all week explain the real context of Donald Trumps statements and exposing how Hillary Clinton has taken them out of context repeatedly to serve her campaign. Simon. When you have to do explaining of the explaining of the explainer there is an issue here. Mike pence totally abandoned, in my opinion, donald trump last night. He left him out to dry. He didnt defend him. He kind of looked like donald trump was indefensible. If your own Vice President ial running mate wont defend you, who will. Senator kaine did what he was supposed to do in the debate. He defended the ticket. He put their policy on the table. The fact that governor pence seemed slightly aloof, if you will, to comments that donald trump has made is an issue. I think it will continue to be an issue all week and well have to talk about that ahead of the debate on sunday. Kaine was petty, nervous. He was interrupting. I didnt think he was nervous. He came out a little aggressive and ready to rumble. Governor pence wasnt necessarily ready to rumble. He lost the debate. I dont think you can win a debate without giving facts. Governor pence didnt give us facts last night. He told utter lies. He straight up said that donald trump didnt say most of the things which he definitely has said. What donald trump said on the campaign trail is the exact characterization of the debate. Petty insults from one side and Bold Solutions from the other. The thing pence did well is brushed off the claims which kaine. Donald trump has been successful because he doesnt play the democratic game and buy into the charges that he is a racist. He keeps plugging away. If anything that republicans should have learned this race is dont take the bait. When mike pence was laughing it off, i thought it worked well for him. He didnt get into it. He didnt lit gate everything kaine threw at him. He said thats nonsense and moved on. I am not saying its the most upstanding and in a factchecked debate hell pass that test but in a televised debate where style is viewed more than substance it works. A lot of the things that pence said im sorry. A lot of the things that kaine. Everyone is doing this. A lot of the thing that kaine said that trump said, trump said. Yeah. Particularly to russia when, you know, that he said that trump didnt seem to know that russia had invaded crimea and trump had praised foreign dictators. Those things happened. Pence said thats nonsense. Its not the truth but pence dismissed it in the debate. Is it credible . Will it pass a factcheck . No. Did he win the debate because he didnt lit gate it . Yes. Kaleigh, there were times that republican commentators noted i really like the Foreign Policy that pence is presenting tonight. Unfortunately its not Donald TrumpsForeign Policy. Specifically, too, he talked about opposing russian strikes in syria, which donald trump has said he doesnt have a problem with, and also whether or not donald trump praised putin, which he has. And thats another reason why some people think, oh, maybe this is about pence 2020, not about defending Donald Trumps position. I think their Foreign Policy is very much in line. Donald trump has said that he doesnt like the type of leadership that putin has but he is a strong leader. In fact, he has used the United States as a marionette puppet over the last eight years. With the russian reset. Baiting us into trusting them, invading crimea. Secretary clinton Encouraging Companies to invest in russia. Taking millions from foreign countries, russia included. Weve been used like a marionette puppet. Theyve been the stronger leader over the obama administration. Those are very much in line. Simon, there is according to polls and focus groups, there is an impression that mike pence won. It must bother you as a clinton supporter. It bothers me as a person who believes in facts. Not just a clinton supporter. I dont think you can win a debate without facts and telling the truth. Governor pence didnt tell the truth. Did he come out looking relaxed and not as crazy as his running mate . Yes. He seemed relax. Seemed like he was having fun. In terms of what are the facts, did he lay out policy and the truth to the American People . Absolutely not. To the point that amanda made about that he laughed some things off, i dont think the Latino Community is laughing about the mexican thing. Right now the storm is hammering eastern cuba and the bahamas with heavy winds and heavy rain. Hours from now its expected to strengthen into a category 4 hurricane, pummel florida and move to the georgia and the carolinas with winds as high as 130 miles per hour. Even though the forecast has it more or less skirting the coast of florida, the governor is saying we shouldnt take any chances. And so is the crush of residents lining up to gear up for Hurricane Matthew. Some gas stations are gridlocked, the lines so long, at least one station simply ran out of gas. It is a little bit crazy.
