Respect his privacy and his dignity and hope you do as well. We also respect the medias right to information. Bear in mind that this incident happened about 29 hours ago and continues to be under investigation. There are some things regarding this investigation i will not be able to talk about. Im going to give you a statement and we will then take questions that you might have. At about 9 43 yesterday morning, we received a medical call at paisley park in chanhassen. The county fire Sheriffs Office and rescue ambulance all responded to the call. That is our standard protocol and its not unusual at all for us to have everybody respond to a medical like that. They found an unresponsive male in the elevator. Cpr was initially started but was unsuccessful. He was pronounced deceased at 10 07. We have identified him as prince rogers nelson, 57 years old. Staff members from paisley park had been unable to contact prince yesterday morning and went to check on him. They found him unresponsive and called 911. Deputies went through the building to make sure that there was nobody else inside. Because this was an unwitnessed death of a middleaged adult, the decision was made to process the scene. That is also normal protocol. It is not different from what we normally would do. There should be no we ended up contacting the crime lab to help us work on that and there should be no inference about that. We finished our processing late yesterday afternoon and turned paisley park back over to princes representatives. Again, because this investigation is ongoing, i will not be answering questions on whether or not there were any items that were taken during our processing. The Midwest Medical Examiners Office was contacted and dr. Quinn strobel, a Carver County medical examiner responded. There were no signs of trauma on the body. The body was transported to dr. Strobels office for an autopsy. Results may take several weeks, which is not unusual. Again, this will continue to be an open investigation until the autopsy results come back and we are ready to take questions that you may have. Yes, maam . One of the 911 callers said that there were people in the home that were distraught. Can you tell us any more about who was in the home with prince at the time of his death . There was some Staff Members that were there that had went to check on him and thats all im going to respond to with that at this time. [ inaudible ] . I am not responding to any kind of questions regarding what may have been taken. We have no reason to believe at this point that this was a suicide. But, again, this is early on in this investigation and its continuing to were continuing to investigate. Sure. Sheriff, any indication how long he had been in that elevator . Was he wearing clothes from the night before . New clothes . We have not received that information from the medical Examiners Office at this time. It had not been in the couple of minutes before First Responders had arrived. Im sorry. Can you repeat that . It had not been within a couple of minutes before the First Responders had arrived, though. Sir, you said hes a very private person or was a private person. Yeah. Was he a healthy person . Im not the right one to answer that. Well let the medical examiner talk about that when that time comes. 4 21, yesterday, were there any medical calls made to that address in the week before . I have checked calls for service in our log for that address as well as persons directly. There will be no calls involving prince in the last year that we have had. Paisley park, prince does some concerts up there sometimes and gettogethers and so on. So its not unusual for us to receive calls at paisley park itself. There was nothing that im aware of that involved prince directly at paisley park. Sir, go ahead. Abc news. Yes. Are you able to confirm whether prince was taking any medication on the night of his death . I am not able to confirm that at this time at all. Sheriff, can i ask you a question . Sure, sir. Can you explain about this idea of what the investigation will entail now, what types i know you cant go into specifics but what types [ inaudible ] . Yeah. Well be talking to people that are close to him and well be gathering medical records and taking a look at those between us and the medical Examiners Office and working from there. [ inaudible ] . Yes. Were they there before he collapsed in the elevator . Is there a timeline for how long he had been by himself . They were trying to reach him yesterday morning and were unable to reach him. Excuse me. Reach prince. So they responded to paisley park to look for him and found him unresponsive in the elevator. So he was alone at home . That is correct. Yeah. We did not we did clear and go through the residence at the time and did not find anybody else there. With afp, are you cooperating with any jurisdictions and looking at all into the flight that had the immediate return to illinois . We will be looking at all of that, yes. Can you tell me what youve done so far or youre just looking into it . You know, our detectives this is 29 years old. Our detectives are currently working on this case. So there are things that they are working on. Are you cooperating with any other jurisdictions . Yes, of course we are. We always cooperate. You said there were no calls involving prince in the last year. Are you aware of any hospital visits he may have had recently . There are no calls involving the Carver CountySheriffs Office that im aware of. I know you said that you wouldnt be specific about things that were taken out of the home but was there medication taken out of the home . Again, im not going to get specific on what was taken or was not taken from the home. Do you know if he there have been these reports that he could have been on some sort of medication, percocet. Have you gotten any evidence of that . Have you talked to anyone about that . This case is currently under investigation. And im not going to talk about that at this time. Can you confirm [ inaudible ] illinois as well as his pharmaceutical records . Between us and the medical Examiners Office, well be looking at that. The records . Yes. Absolutely. There are no reports that he frequented a local walgreens several times in the past. Have you been there to talk to the employees there . Have you pulled any Surveillance Video and what did they say . That is part of the investigation. And that would be our normal protocol, certainly, to pull any type of video or so on. So sheriff thats not what i said. I would say that would be our normal protocol. This case is 29 hours old. And continues to evolve for us. Sheriff, how detailed are your crime scene investigators . Excuse me. Sorry, sir. How detailed are your crime scene investigators working at processing a scene . Can you talk to us about how meticulous you guys are working and who is working ohhn it . The crime lab is working on it and they are very meticulous. Thats what they do. Photos and so on. Is there any indication of how long he was in the elevator . Had it been overnight, do you believe . You know, were going to wait for the medical Examiners Office to give us that information and i cut somebody off over here. Maam, im sorry. I have a question for the medical examiner. Sure. And shes the Public Information officer. Shes not the medical examiner. Oh. Yes. Is there any sign of a Drug Overdose found at the studio . Dlars let me give you a little bit of background about midwest medical examiners. Were working as part of the Investigative Team with the Sheriffs Office. So much of the answers that i will be able to give you will include the word pending. So we received a call at 10 12 yesterday morning to assist the Carver CountySheriffs Office in this investigation. Our chief medical examiner arrived on the scene at 11 30 yesterday morning local time and was on the scene for several hours. The autopsy this morning began at 9 00 a. M. Central daylight time and concluded at 1 00 p. M. And just shortly i received word that his body did leave Midwest Medical Examiners Office and was released to the family. As you know, it was a very meticulous exam. It was a complete exam. And so several of the pieces of information that are gathered in that process will be sent to labs for further testing. So that answer is pending. And it will take days and weeks to complete those particular investigations. Is it possible to say when he died . I know the time of death is pronounced at 7 minutes past 10 00 but had he been dead overnight in the elevator . That information is pending. Do you know what time he was removed from paisley park . 15 39. My question is for the sheriff. Was there any extra people brought in because this was prince or any extra deputies or anything like that different because of the way because it was prince . There were a number of people that started gathering across the street as well as media. So, yes, we certainly did bring other people in to help from a crowd control standpoint and to assist us with that. As far as from a scene processing standpoint, its a very large area. Paisley park is. So we had to bring a couple extra people in and that was part of the reason, also, for having had a county assistance with that. Did you search room to room . Is that what were talking about, because of the Building Size . Yeah. The building is pretty big. Sheriff, were there Surveillance Video at paisley park and do you have them . That is that will be part of the investigation. I dont want to comment on that right now. Did it appear that he used the elevator because he was about to pass out or did he have access to stairwells . He had access to stairways. Paisley park is a big place and i dont think it would be unusual for him to use the elevator. The staircases are pretty long. So i dont think that would be unusual. If thats why he took the elevator or not, i cant say. Was it at the ground, the elevator, was he collapsed inside the elevator . Yes, he was collapsed inside of the elevator. That is correct. I havent been over go aid head. Do you know when was the last time that he was seen alive and at what point he had retired . The information that we have right now is that he was last seen about 8 00 wednesday night. Where was that . At paisley park. He would have been dropped off. Here is a question. Had you met prince before the mayor or the sheriff, would you like to answer, and, if so, what was that interaction like . I did meet prince but it wasnt in my capacity as mayor. When i was in business, i had the pleasure of riding in an airplane with him. Our plane was waiting for departure and there were two seats in front of me waiting for they were empty and very soon after that the stewardess escorted prince and a member of his entourage. I did greet him, hello, but as a mayor i never had a reason or occasion to meet him. Sheriff and we would see prince from a Law Enforcement standpoint occasionally. You know, he would have concerts at paisley park and we would help with traffic assistance and that kind of thing. He lived in chanhassen for a long time and had two different residences that he lived in not counting paisley park itself. He had been a longtime member of the community and really a Good Neighbor for everybody. When you talked to his personal sir . You said there was no reason to believe that this was a suicide. Is there any reason to believe that foul play was involved . We have no reason to believe at this time its a suicide. The rest of it is under investigation. Sir, can you talk about his personal doctor and questions around medication cleared up by talking to his doctor . That is going to be part of the investigation. As well certainly have contact with any medical personnel that hes had contact with. So have you talked to his doctor . This investigation is 29 hours old. Our investigators are currently working on it. I have not talked to them in the past however long. I dont know specifically who they have talked to at this point. He was on the first floor, whoever asked that question over there. Sheriff . Yes, maam. Are there any rumors youd like to dispel about the nature of his death or any part of the investigation . You know, i dont know if i can dispel all of the rumors out there. You know, this is under investigation. This is under investigation. One more question. Was a search warrant issued . We did do a search warrant, yes. And that also would be normal protocol. Paisley park is very large and its hard to say who had control or who could have given us permission to process that scene. We thought it would be safer and better for us to get a search warrant on the front end to do that. So, yes. We did get a search warrant. It has not been filed as of yet and will be filed in the next week and a half or so. So what was it for . To process the scene at paisley park. And or process paisley park and i dont have a copy of that search warrant in front of me. Was a representative of the medical Examiners Office, i want to ask you, the procedure you followed, [ inaudible ] sometimes they release initial preliminary information that has nothing to do with the toxicology test. For example, how long he had been dead when they found him. Are you going to have at least a preliminary report on some initial information before we get the toxicology . The short answer is no. The explanation is that we are here in the capacity as serving the Carver CountySheriffs Office as part of their Investigative Team. And so we will complete our results and on behalf of the Midwest Medical Examiners Office, the office will not release any information until our results are complete. It is determined by the sheriff what his office chooses to release, whether it is preliminary as it comes in or when it is complete. His body was [ inaudible ] that is his only blood relative left . His body was released to his family. Do you not have a [ inaudible ] or are you not willing to share . Our results are pending. What do you expect the timeline to be for your report . It could be days depending on the type of tests and most likely weeks to have the complete set of results available to us and thats when Midwest Medical Examiners Office would release it. Sheriff, how many people do you have on this case and how many agencies . Weve got, you know, three, four agencies working on this and ive got a number of detectives that are working on it. This is a very large let me rephrase that. You know, this is a highprofile case for us. But the county continues life in the county continues to go on and there are also other cases that we have that we are currently working objen. Im not sure how many detectives i have working specifically on this case right now. Yes, maam . So the plane landed in illinois, we know that. When he refused a room at the hospital as the reports indicate now, are you looking into any was there anything unusual whenever he landed that you can talk about and that you know about . I dont know i know as much about that currently that you do from reading the paper. I can address that for a moment. Okay. Thank you. So again, speaking on behalf of our chief medical examiner and when we say that were going to be doing a complete exam, that not only includes the present state of the body that is brought to us but also the medical history of the individual. The family medical history of the individual. So those types of things will be encompassed in the medical examiners report that will be delivered to the sheriff for his investigation. And which would include reaching back to illinois . It will include his medical history, his social history and his familys medical history as well. Do you have authority to get those medical records . I would assume they would request them for this investigation. Absolutely, we do have access to those. Is [ inaudible ] helping you with this investigation at all . At this point, we have not reached out to the bca for assistance with this. Is the prince family cooperating with this investigation . Are they pretty willing and helping . I talked to a couple of family members yesterday and they said they are trying to keep a lot of things quiet. Are they working with you in any way . Yeah. Ive had contact with princes family and princes representatives and they have been very cooperative. We havent had any problems with that at all. When you say you see no obvious signs of trauma, what does that mean . What would be a sign of trauma . A sign of trauma would be some sign of violence or something violent had happened. There was no sign of that at all. Sheriff, what happens to paisley park . Does he have a will . Im not privy to that. How long will the Sheriffs Office take a presence at paisley park, have the roadways closed and how long will crowds be able to gather outside there . Well allow crowds to gather as long as they are on paisley parks property there and thats part of paisleys property there. And well allow them to gather as long as paisley parks okay. Well reevaluate that until monday morning probably, anyway and see where we are at what whats going on. Road closures continue until monday . Yes, up until monday. Could you describe to us exactly what sort of tests on any case when theres a nonwitness death . Was she talking to you . Im sorry. Ill get out of your way. Essentially, it will be tissue samples done and toxicology samples done based on blood draws and thats the most im going to say about it at this end. What is the step to the toxicology test that you would normally undertake . A full spectrum and thats the most im going to say about it. Sheriff, when you talk about the last time that he was seen was wednesday night at 8 00 p. M. , was he out or was that just him being at home by members of his family, out and about in the community . Somebody dropped him off at home about 8 00 that night. So it was the Staff Members that saw him last . There was an acquaintance that last saw him . Thats correct. Sheriff, is it unusual that he would be the only occupant of this huge complex . You said that staffers tried to get in contact with him and were unable to do that. Were there no security personnel . Prince is a very private person. And i dont think that that would be unusual for him to be there by himself. Sheriff, you mentioned staff was trying to meet him. The person who made the 911 call, do you know their relationship . 911 caller information is private and i cant share that. Sheriff, do you know how he was dressed at the time, if he was in day clothes or sleeping clothes or he was in clothes. I cant say i know for sure at this point what he goes out in so i dont know whether those are sleep clothes or what type of clothes. He had on a shirt, pants of some sort, he was dressed. Sheriff, was there an elevator phone and, if so, when was the last time this elevator was inspected . Do we have that information . I dont believe there was an elevator phone. I dont think so. [ inaudible ] . If there are things that lead us in that direction, sure. Again, its 29 years old, our detectives are, working on it and im not sure where they are currently. On that note, have you requested additional search warrants and, if so, where and when . We havent done any additional at this point. Prince had other homes. Do you know how long he was living at paisley park . You know, prince moved around a little bit and would travel quite often. I cant say for sure how long he had been there. But he did stay there frequently. And considered that, i think, his main residence. Sheriff, you said that there were signs that he did collapse in the elevator. Was there any signs that he may have hit his head or was it just a simple collapse . There was no obvious signs of trauma to the body that we observed. Now, i dont know at this point what the medical examiner may have found during the autopsy, if anything would have showed. But there was nothing at all that indicated obvious sign of trauma. A prince song. Exactly. Go ahead now. Was there a cell phone there and was there any kind of indication that he had reached for his cell phone or made any attempt to make a call . I dont recall seeing a cell phone in the close proximity. I dont recall a cell phone in the close proximity to where he was at. If some of his staff had cell phones, would you be checking records . That would be part of our investigation and i dont want to share that at this time. Sheriff, were you there yourself . Did you see the body yourself . I was there for a period of time yesterday. When it was first discovered, were you there with the first group . No. I had other things that were going on. How would you describe the mood . Could you detect a mood inside paisley park at that moment when obviously at that moment they knew that prince was dead . What was the moment inside . You know, it was certainly somber. You know, he was a friend, i think, to the people that was there as well as being an employer and they were certainly shook by what had happened. Sure. Sheriff, is there any potential criminal charges . This all continues to be under investigation. And well do a complete and thorough investigation and its better with this for us to do it well than for us to do it fast. So were going to do the best job that we can. Sheriff, does your department carry the anecdote for overdose of opiates . All of our officers have been carrying narcan and that was not used at all yesterday. I heard somebody over in this direction. Sure. Okay. The person who made the 911 call, staff member apparently from the transcript did not know the address, didnt know the address where they were . I dont know if that would be unusual with that. For not knowing the address. Im sure they knew where it was. A lot of im sure theres probably a number of people out here that dont necessarily know the address to their news buildings and so on. So i dont think that would be unusual. Sheriff, was prince in minnesota allowed to have the [ inaudible ] drug . Theres some discussion currently going on with that from a legislative standpoint. I dont believe at this point that private citizens can have narcan. Just Law Enforcement . Law enforcement and firefighter can carry it. It was something that went through the Legislature Last year, the year before. Sheriff, this is a question im going to follow up, were you a prince fan yourself . Did you like his music . Yeah. Certainly im the same age as prince is. And i know his music well and, sure, i like princes music. Yeah. Sir . Any music playing when the Police Arrived . When was the last song that i did not hear any music on in the residence at all or in the building at all. How many employees were there when you arrived . Three. There were three people that were there. Are you asking anything from the public . You know, i would ask for again, prince was a very private person and i would ask the public and everybody to respect that privacy and treat that with dignity as well as all of you with that. So i one more question and im going to be done. [ inaudible ] . We have ten days legally within which to file a search warrant with the courts and i dont know when that might be done but we have ten days to do that. I want to thank everybody for coming. This is certainly a big event internationally and nationally and i can tell you that we are going to leave no stone unturned with this and make sure that the public knows what happened. So can i make a comment, too . Yes. Absolutely. How many of you were a fan . A lot . Yeah, of course. A lot. I think that, you know, we would like to extend our thanks to everyone for showing such respect for this situation, for our generation, he was the song book and the narrative for some of the greatest moments in our individual lives, much like Elvis Presley and ira gershowin before him. This is something that we take very seriously and we appreciate the dignity and respect and outpouring of support that everyone has shown not only to his family but to the Law Enforcement officers working on this, to the state of minnesota that so proudly claimed him and adored him and this is something that is very gravitas for everyone involved. So we appreciate the respect that has been shown by everyone in this situation. Thank you very much, everybody. You were listening to local Carver County minnesota officials addressing what they could so soon after his death about the mysterious death of entertainment icon prince at the age of 57. The sheriff, as you just heard, said the death is still under investigation. He did say there was no obvious trauma to the body and they have no reason to believe that this death was because of suicide. He said that prince was last seen alive around 8 00 wednesday night, the night before he was found. People at his estate had not heard from him. They went to check on him thursday morning. They found him collapsed and unresponsive in the elevator at his estate. His body has now been turned over to his family. Lets go right to cnns ryan young who was at the news conference. There were a few princelike moments there, such as when the sheriff acknowledged that they didnt know if he was wearing pajamas or street clothes because of the rather unique way, unique style that prince had. Reporter i think you could also tell there was a lot of respect for prince in the community and respect to keep this Information Private as long as the family wants to keep it private. We were talking to some of the officials before they started and said they were going to start on time and try to answer as many questions as possible but one thing people wanted to know about the circumstances surrounding the death, we have a little more information. That prince was by himself and staffers became worried, made several phone calls and once they arrived to that house they found prince on the first floor in that elevator in some sort of dress, of course, didnt explain exactly what that was, you heard some of the other questions being asked and he kept saying this is under investigation and we talked about how many agencies were involved in this. They said several agencies were involved in this but i can tell you, just to the side as we have been talking to the folks who work here and live here, they have so much pride for prince. A lot of people are making sure that the familys wishes are being kept private as long as possible. So many people trying to ask those questions because so many rumors surrounding this. This is an open investigation. They are keeping a lot of things obviously quiet. The sheriff kept saying that the case is only 29 hours old. Also notable for the fact that the medical examiner actually at one point started editorializing about how important princes work was and asking the reporters gathered before them, were they fans of prince, obviously this is a death and a loss felt deeply in that community. Ryan young, thank you so much. Getting results will take some time. Cnns chief medical correspondent sanjay gupta is joining us. This is a time of mourning for many people still but his death was also so unexpected and many people want to know how this happened. What could the autopsy and toxicology report tell us . Well, it could tell us a lot. It could give us a clear answer in terms of what caused his death. The sheriff, as you heard, jake, was very careful to say, look, there are certain things that he cant talk about today. I think the inference is that there may be some clues already that they have but they want to piece it together with everything else. The autopsy, the toxicology reports and also just what had been going on with prince over the last several weeks. A couple things that i should point out, jake, you heard that the timeline from yesterday morning, 9 43 they get this call. Thats when they found princes body i guess slumped over in an elevator. It took just 24 minutes before they actually declared time of death. So its important a lot of times if theres any signs that possibility of taking someone to the hospital, paramedics will often do that. They did not do that in this case. So its unclear how long he was in the elevator but the sheriff said, look, it wasnt just minutes. This sounds like he had been there for some period of time at least. Also, he also described that the autopsy was a very complete autopsy. It was the word that the medical examiners pr representative used. Very complete autopsy. Took about four hours. Again, what you can deduce from that, there wasnt any obvious signs that they zeroed in on. So it looks like there was a lot that they were sort of looking for with a lot of things a possibility here. Weeks, days at least, but weeks probably before we get some sort of final answer and i will tell you, jake, that sometimes even that final answer may not be as definitive as a lot of people would like. Sometimes you just dont know absolutely with certainty what happened here. Prince said in a 2009 interview, sanjay, that he had epilepsy and seizures when he was younger. Potentially could that be a clue into how he died . I think its something that they would look at but if i had to say, i think that would be an unlikely thing. So much time has passed. Unlikely that it would be the epilepsy because it sounds like those had resolved. Could it be medications that he was still on . Why he would have a problem with some of those medications, even if he was still on these medications, it just seems unlikely. But again, it sounds like they are leaving, as you heard the sheriff say, no stone unturned. That will come up during the investigation. Dr. Sanjay gupta, thank you so much. Appreciate it as always. Theres been a nonstop stream of fans going to paisley park since news of princes death. This is the complex that prince called home right outside minneapolis. Lets go to cnns Stephanie Elam who is there now. How are fans paying tribute as they go to paisley park . Reporter jake, they have been coming out here all day long. Ill step out so you can take a clearer look. They have been coming out since the sun came up today leaving notes, artwork, balloons, flowers, so many generations showing up in purple to show their love for their home town icon because hes from minnesota and never left. Obviously this was a big loss for them to feel the fact that he is gone. Yesterday his sister coming out and greeting fans and hugging them as well while she was out here. Just a lot of people trying to digest the fact that hes gone. A man, yes, a superstar but really felt at ease here. So to speak, he could let his hair down and could be seen out doing Different Things with the community, going to the store. And people here allowed him to breathe and have that sort of privacy and the mayor saying thats part of the reason that he actually enjoyed life here, jake. Stephanie elam at paisley park, minnesota, thank you so much. Coming up, cedric the entertainer joins us to remember prince. Thats next. Welcome back to the lead. Weve seen prince command a lead like that one and he didnt particularly care for interviews. He described himself as shy. One person described him as hilarious. He would have made an incredible comedian. Cedric the entertainer is joining me. Talk to us about how you came to know prince. I understand you told a yoke about him during one of your shows. Yeah. He was a guy who loves all kinds of entertainment and so i was in minneapolis early in my career, you know, smaller venue and im doing a joke about, you know, like how your relatives borrow your clothes and i said, prince has got a nephew or niece, maybe get something out of your closet . He said, i have these pants with the butt cheeks out and hes like, nah, you can keep those. Everybody was laughing and it was a funny joke and then later on in my dressing room, prince heard that joke and they sent this note and said he invited me out to paisley pa. I couldnt believe he was sitting in the audience and saw it and so since then ive been invited to the house several times. I was on stage with him in los angeles singing raspberry beret and stopped the music and said, do you know the words . I said, i know it my way. I worked at five and dime. My boss was mr. Mcgee. I do it the way black people sing it. Any way that makes sense to them, we put it in the song. Chuck dee, what was it like to perform with him . Maestro. Like when you put it in the same ven kna venacular, loius armstrong, he made everything in the last 50 years for us and he signified time of past, present and future. And i recorded with prince in 1999 at paisley park and he had a garage sale on the lawn of paisley park. Thats how Community Oriented it was to the community. And then im like, are you having a yard sale . Yeah, im selling guitars and im like, dude. And basketball rims up in there. It was a mindblowing experience and any time that he was on stage and i was in the audience, he would call me up to do what i do and im like, okay, im awe struck struck but i better get my head on and focus. Cedric, in recent years weve lost icons, michael jackson, whitney houston, david bowie earlier this year. Maurice white. Yeah. You think about it, just losing so many people that mean their music lives on, though. Its the thing about everybody has a great first story how it touches you, how his music made something very specific for you, you know. And i remember the song that came out and i lived in st. Louis and it was such a big hit that i radio played it like eight times in a row and nobody complained. Like people just people just let the radio play the song over and over again one night. It was just nobody worried about. We just loved that song when it came out and remember, you know, that was the effect that he had on people like that with his songs and his music. I think i played when doves cry on my way to work six times today. What about you . Holding my head and all those in the last few days and erotic city is for the deepvoice brothers. Thats a song i can actually sing in my range. What about you, chuck . Yeah. My radio rap station, dan mr. Man, sign of the times, did a song called undisputed, lets go places. Another thing about prince, there was a time recently that he revolutionized the toe to toe and buddies to liberate music and deserves to make everybody get the music out or whatever and making too much music, thats impossible because now its like picasso.
