President jimmy carter. Sara sidner was also at that ceremony and she joins me live from simi valley. Sara, it was a very moving, moving tribute. Reporter absolutely was. You know, for a generation that may not have known a lot about nancy reagan, they werent around when she was in the white house, you learned a lot about her from all of the different people who spoke and eulogized her. Everyone from former nbc news nightly anchor tom brokaw to her daughter, patti davis, who was really eloquent. She also let you into some of the struggles that they had and talked through the fact that they had a strained relationship but they had fixed that. Really what everyone really focused on was the love that she had for her husband. She was a fierce, fierce supporter of his. She watched over him and felt that her duty really was to be his wife and that was her number one priority. That really came through in all of this. We heard from the former Prime Minister of canada as well, brian mullroney who read this really sweet letter from mr. Reagan to his wife, just talking about her in such lovely tones. And throughout this you really did learn a lot about nancy reagan, maybe some things people didnt know. Some fun stories, people laughed a lot, and certainly there were also tears. A lot of people looking at the situation and saying, you know what, she lived an amazing life from hollywood to the white house. What a trajectory. And she did have a lot of power. She did do a lot of things. Her just say no to Drugs Campaign as well as her fight for stem cell research. And she talked about her daughter talked about that fight with the Republican Party. And so it was really interesting just hearing some of the details of what she was doing privately to fight for what she believed in. What you learned also about her is that she was fierce and she didnt take no for an answer. Someone even remarked they didnt think that god would win a fight with nancy reagan. Sara sidner, thanks so much. Nancy reagan was loved and respected by many. She was one of the most influential first ladies in american history. Lets talk more about Nancy Reagans life and legacy. I want to bring in a former white house social secretary under secretary reagan and a former speechwriter for mrs. Reagan. Also douglas brinkley, editor of the reagan diaries and david gergen who was a president al advisor to four u. S. President s, including president reagan. First, just your general impressions of the day. Was there anything that you saw in particular during the ceremony, any comments from any of her loved ones that you think would have been really meaningful for her . Well, i thought Ronald Reagan Ronnie Reagan was exactly right when he said this was a celebration. Mrs. Reagan said to me in october that she thought god had forgotten her. And i think this is exactly where she wants to be. She is now laid to rest. And then the heavens opened within seconds after she was laid to rest. And it was perfect. It was if she had scripted it, it would have been the way she would have scripted it. Id also say there was a heavy duty military component today. Mrs. Reagan really felt empathy for single women who used to come to the white house by themselves. And she asked the military aides if they would go to these womens hotels, pick them up, escort them to the white house, hang up their coat, engage them in conversation with someone else and then they could leave, but they had to take them back. And i think mrs. Reagan today was escorted so beautifully by eight members of the military and the bagpipes to her final resting place. And i know that she is thrilled. Carl, let me ask you as a historian focusing on first ladies, how influential was nancy reagan in the pantheon of first ladies that we have had in this country . I think theres different kinds of influence and power. Actually thats a conversation i had with her, my very first conversation with her in july of 1985. It was about the different kinds of power. You have people like Hillary Clinton and Eleanor Roosevelt who focused very specifically on policy. Whereas you had somebody like mrs. Reagan who like an edith wells wilson or Mamie Eisenhower and focused on the things around them. Their health, how well rested they were, the people they saw every day, the people they relied on, how all of that affected them, their schedule. That was a form of power and influence very different from policy. The one thing i would say also is really important that was so good to hear her two children speak today, is to also remember that during those eight years when a lot of people saw a lot of accomplishments and a lot of beautiful parties and so forth that there was a lot personally going on there. That there was a period of estrangement and Public Public disclosure about estrangement between her and her daughter, patti, between her and her stepson. Her father died during those eight years. Her mother died during those eight years. She had breast cancer. The president was hospitalized himself for cancer surgery apart from that. So there was a lot of stress and a lot of personal cost. Mrs. Reagan also wrote openly in her memoirs that, you know, there were times i wish my husband was a little bit more a little firmer with people because it fell on her. And she did it willingly, but, you know, theres cost. Theres cost to be in the white house. Thats right. David gergen, let me bring you in. It has been said that sometimes nancy reagan was almost the bad cop to her husbands good cop. We heard ron reagan jr. Say earlier today what a bunch of us were talking about on sunday when the news first came that mrs. Reagan had passed and that is there likely would not have been a president reagan if he did not have nancy there by his side pushing him and really being the other half of this incredibly powerful partnership. Thanks, jake. By the way, congratulations on last night. You really had a wonderful debate with the republicans. Most substantive debate that weve had. But as to the two reagans, jim baker said this right off the bat in his remarks today and in the eloquent tribute, that there would have been no reagan presidency without nancy reagan, and thats because she was not only engaged in this wonderful love story but as baker and others said, she was a political wife. And she embraced that as to what his career was going to be and she was going to help him make that successful. She was part of an old tradition about a wife helping in that way. And she was astute politically and she knew he was a conservative but a pragmatic conservative. She was the one that talked him into sitting down with gorbachev and try to get an arms control agreement, laying the foundations for the first real reductions in arms and also leading to the end of the cold war. She was the one who talked him into a number of things, negotiating with congress trying to get bills out, working with tip oneill. She was friends with tip oneills wife. She made a lot of friendships with kate graham. It was interesting that you had not only jim baker but tom brokaw as well as diane sawyer from the press there. They were two of the close in people for the reagans. And that was nancy from the first started working, became friends with kate graham of the Washington Post which had become such an opponent. She understood how to make the social side of Ronald Reagan support his political side and that helped to make him the president that he was, in addition to being the first enforcer. As gahl burt said earlier, former social secretary under reagan, we heard from the reagan children, patti davis and ron reagan jr. We heard alec doenecdotes that brought you into the personal side of this family and this couple. Lets play one of those. My father used to get massages from a large Eastern European man who would come to the house and set up his massage table in my parents dressing room. On one of these days, as my father lay face down on the table, my mother tiptoed in, kissed him lightly on the back of his neck and tiptoed out. He didnt know it was her. But he went through the rest of the massage, never said a word, and after the masseur left, he said to my mother, i dont think we can have him back anymore. Why, she asked him, what happened . Well, he kissed me. When she told him it was her, he was flooded with relief and said thank god, i didnt know what to do. Douglas brinkley, its a charming story but theres one thing i want to ask you about because you got to meet and work with nancy reagan towards the end of her life, and that is one of the things i was struck by and i saw in an interview with her, she talked about how she never got over the grief of losing her husband, and how she would say people say its gets better with time and it didnt with her. She really never was able to have that grief alleviated at all. No, thats right, jake. There was some closure after she was able to organize the 100th Birthday Party for Ronald Reagan. That was a big deal for her, to make that work, to make sure the country paid attention. It would have been the centennial of her husband. After that, i think she was in a bit of a sad mode and in the last years of her life was really ready to pass, you might say, in a sense of wanting to go reunite with her husband. Shes a woman of great faith and truly believed, this came out today in the eulogies, that shes now somewhere over the rainbow with the love of her life. Lets hope so. Douglas brinkley, gahl burt, david gergen, carl anthony, thank you so much. Well take a quick break and be right back with all of todays news. Stay with us. I love to take pictures that engage people. And to connect us with the wonderment of nature. The detail on this surface book is amazing. With the tiger image, the saliva coming off and you got this turning. Thats why i need this kind of resolution and computing power. Being able to use a pen like this. On the screen directly with the image. It just gives me a different relationship to it. And i cant do that on my mac. This is brilliant for me. Dr. Ben carson said today and donald trump agreed, perhaps there are two Donald Trumps. There is a public donald trump and a private persona. Kind of makes you wonder what hes holding back in public. Cnn correspondent Sunlen Serfaty is live in miami, florida, for us now where republicans are in a vigorous battle to try to win the states delegates tuesday. Today trump buried the hatchet with one of his former targets, dr. Ben carson. Thats right, jake. This is someone that trump once called a pathological liar, but both carson and trump really chalking it up to just politics today. This comes just four days before the next round of voting happens as this sort of serious moves happen in the force desperate to stop donald trump. I think its time to end the debates. Reporter donald trump today is signaling hes ready to move beyond the primary battle, throwing cold water on the idea of more debates. How many times do you have to give the same answer to the same question . Reporter the gop frontrunner also rolling out the endorsement of dr. Ben carson. A much more reasonable person than comes across. Reporter the onetime rivals burying the hatchet. There are two different Donald Trumps. Theres the one you see on the stage and theres the one whos very cerebral. Reporter that characterization, one that trump is two minds about. I probably do agree. I think there are two Donald Trumps. No, i think there is one donald trump. Reporter its coming on the heels of cnns debate. Trumps rivals largely taking a handsoff approach, highlighting differences on issues over personal insults. Rubio are you buickirebuking tr islam hates us. Theres something going on that you dont know about and many other people dont know about but there is tremendous hatr hatred. Im not interested in being politically correct, im interested in being correct. Reporter trump is urging the party to unite whinbehind his candidacy. I just say embrace these millions of people that now for the First Time Ever love the Republican Party and unify. Be smart and unify. Reporter but his opponents are not having it. Marco rubio is encouraging voters in ohio to support john kasich if they want to stop trump. Clearly john kasich is has a better chance of winning ohio than i do. If a voter in ohio concludes that voting for john kasich gives us the best chance to stop donald trump there, i anticipate thats what theyll do. Reporter and saying he is the only option for defeating trump in florida. If you want to stop donald trump in florida, any vote but a vote for me is a vote for donald trump. Reporter ted cruz trying to present himself as the only viable option to derail trumps way to the nomination. Lets divide things up, lets play games, its real, real simple. How do you beat donald trump . You beat him. You beat him at the ballot box. Reporter with kasich and trump in a tough battle for ohio, trump is launching a fullscale attack on the ohio governor, releasing this new Television Ad today. John kasich has been an acty governor, spending most of his time everywhere but ohio. Especially michigan, the latest disaster in his failing president ial bid. Reporter and that ad comes after donald trump also released two attack ads here in florida against marco rubio this week. He has predicted wins in ohio and florida. Of course those pivotal races coming up on tuesday. Sunlen serfaty, thank you so much. The violence at recent trump rallies adds to security concerns. Weve seen a number of Trump Supporters involved in nasty spats with protesters. When asked about the violence, trump told me last night he is not to blame. Some of your critics point to quotes that youve made at these rallies, including february 23rd, id like to punch him in the face, referring to a protester. February 27th, in the good ole days theyd have ripped him out of that seat owe first. February 1st, knock the crap out of him, would you . Serious seriously, knock the hell i promise you ill pay for the legal fees. I promise, i promise. We have some protesters who are bad dudes, they have done bad things. They are swinging, they are really dangerous. They get in there and they start hitting people. Jim acosta joins me live in chicago where trump will speak this evening. Jim, are more protests expected there this evening . Reporter i think so, jake. There are security concerns already here in chicago. Police officers are out in force surrounding this arena where donald trump will speak later on this evening. Civil Rights Groups and progressive groups say there will be protests at this rally, mainly over Donald Trumps immigration stance. As you said, jake, trump is offering no apologies about these scuffles that are breaking out at his rallies. He is blaming the protesters, even after one of his supporters sucker punched a demonstrator earlier this week. Here is how trump explained his view at whats happening at his events earlier today. You know what, the audience swung back. And i thought it was very, very appropriate. He was swinging, he was hitting people, and the audience hit back. And thats what we need. Reporter now, the Trump Campaign is also pushing back on allegations that Campaign Manager Corey Lewandowski roughed up a reporter for the conservative news outlet breitbart. That reporter says he grabbed her and almost dragged her to the ground. Lewandowski called her delusional on twitter and the Trump Campaign says she is confusing lewandowski with a member of trumps security detail, but she did file a police report. While breitbart says they are standing behind fields and her story, the outlet says its not clear if shes correct that it was lewandowski. Weve also seen no evidence that the protester was swinging at all. Jim acosta, thank you so much. He is the only u. S. Senator to endorse ted cruz, but why did senator mike lee wait so long . That story next. Plus hes called him a lawyer and pathological, but apparently now donald trump is okay with an endorsement from ben carson. So is carson dropping out the only thing that changed . We wonerere. And here. And here. Here. And here. Uh, here. Also in here. Back there. Behind here. Even next to these guys, here. In the nations largest, independent study, rootmetrics just named verizon Number One Network for the fifth time in a row, here. So when the other guys claim theyre the best, remember theres only one, number one. And now well pay up to 650 to switch to the best network. This one right here. Welcome back to the lead. Im jake tapper. Senator ted cruz just gained his first endorsement from one of his Senate Colleagues as cruz positions himself as the partys best chance to stop trump. Could more backers follow . Joining me now is senator mike lee. Senator, thanks for coming on today. Thank you. Great job last night, by the way, at the debate. Thank you, sir, i appreciate it. So donald trump is trying to moderate his tone to unite the party. Do you think its possible that he could bring the Party Together were hereto become the nominee . I dont know. And im not being coy on this one. I really need a whole lot of other questions answered regarding donald trump before i know whether i could support him or whether i know whether most of the party could support him. I still dont know where he stands on a whole host of issues, from federalism to separation of powers to the basic fundamental role of government in general. Im waiting to hear more specificity from him. But what i do know its time for the party to unite behind ted cruz. Theres a lot of excitement behind ted cruz and theres something there for republicans at every step along the ideological spectrum within the right of center space. Senator, you and senator cruz have been united in a lot of issues, a lot of causes in the senate. You may be his closest friend in the senate. If you dont mind my asking, what took you so long to endorse him . Well, ive made no secret of the fact that ive had Three Friends in this race for a very long time. When rand paul got out a few weeks ago, then i had two Close Friends in the race. I never ruled out the possibility that at some point i might endorse. A point in time could come when it would be time to unite the party and i think that point has finally arrived. Theres no scientific formula that enables me to say this is the time but it has occurred to me in recent days that this is the moment. Ted cruz is gaining momentum and i believe that he is the best candidate in fact i think hes the only candidate who is not donald trump who can get the nomination at this point. Why do you think youre the only one of cruzs Senate Colleagues to support him right now . First of all, you have to remember that the overwhelming majority of republican senators have not endorsed anyone. Youve got a handful who have endorsed. Im the first one who has endorsed ted cruz. Im confident i will not be the last. What about your friend, marco rubio, what do you think he should do . Marco rubio is a great man. Hes a great friend of mine and will always continue to be. I am that he will end up supporting ted cruz. I hope that hell get on this bandwagon and help support him. That will of course be up to him and his family as they make decisions over the next few days. Of course we have no idea whats going to happen on tuesday. He could well win the florida primary, although polls seem to suggest donald trump will. Do you subscribe to the theory that if he loses badly in his home state, his political career is over . I dont know if you can ever say that someones political career is over just because they lose one election. Even if its a president ial primary election in their home state. It certainly isnt helpful and i know that would have to be very discouraging to him if that happens. But, you know, i dont think anyone can say that he has no political future, if that doesnt turn out well for him on tuesday. Senator mike lee, thank you. Its been too long. Dont be so long coming back next time. We appreciate you being here. Appreciate it. Its hard to forget when donald trump called ben carson pathological. But if youre a child molester, theres no cure. They cant stop you. Pathological, theres no cure. Now, he said he was pathological. Okay. Now it seems trump and the good doctor are quick to forgive and forget, but are the voters . Hey, jesse. Who are you . Im vern, the orange money retirement rabbit from voya. Orange money represents the money you put away for retirement. Over time, your money could multiply. Hello, all of you. Get organized at voya. Com. Welcome back to the lead. Im jake tapper. Donald trump and ben carson made up today when carson threw his support behind his florida neighbor. It wasnt long ago when carson posed a threat to trump in the polls and the businessman was pulling no punches, mocking carson, telling stories about carsons childhood violence from carsons book and carson responded with some serious questions about trumps faith. We have a breaking story. Donald trump has fallen to second place behind ben carson. We informed ben but he was sleeping. So hes a pathological, damaged, temper, a problem. But if youre a child molester, theres no cure. They cant stop you. Pathological, theres no cure. Now, he said he was pathological. Okay. I realize where my success has come from. And i dont in anyway deny my faith in god. He took a knife and he went after a friend and he lunged, he lunged that knife into the stomach of his friend, but lo and behold, it hit the belt. It hit the belt. And the knife broke. Give me a break. Give me a break. I have a belt. Somebody hits me with a belt its going in because the belt moves this way. It moves that way. He mitt the belt buckle. One of my favorite bible versus, proverbs 22 4. It says by humility and the fear of the lord are riches and honor and life. And thats a very big part of who i am, humility and a fear of the lord. I dont get that impression with him. That was then, and this is now. Lets bring in todays panel. Cnn political commentator, Mary Katherine hamm, julianna glover is a republican strategist and cnn political commentator. Kayleigh mcenany. Who did you make of this endorsement . I did not expect that. If you look at his Facebook Page its interesting to see the response from many of his fans. Youve got a man who seems to be maybe the nicest guy on the planet and maybe this is why he endorsed trump, hes so nice and has forgiven him for calling him pathological like a pedophile. The response from many of his fans is im really surprised by this and not excited about it. I think many of those people are inclined to go cruz, i would guess. Not all of them. Some of them will listen to ben carson, but this is quite something to get over, to stand behind him at a podium. Kayleigh, let me bring you in because trump was asked about some of these comments, especially the pathological and child molester comments and trump said, look, thats part of the political game but thats all behind us. Yeah, thats exactly right. You know, he was playing into the larger narrative. If you turned on any news station when donald trump was making those comments, the narrative coming out was ben carson lied about x, y or z. I contest ben carson ever lied but that was what was being said repeatedly. Donald trump played into that and it speaks very highly of donald trump that ben carson said despite sparring with this man, despite all of the negativity between the two of us, i am endorsing him for president of the United States. I think what is more important than that is that today he spoke to trumps soft underside, his soft underbelly, his christian spirit. He validated what a lot of v evangelicals are seeing, theres another side to trump. Thats why hes winning in southeastern states and evangelicals. Theres still a very vocal stop Trump Movement and there are questions about, amtd ynd y heard from mitt romney among others, take a listen to marco rubios Communications Director talking about a way that trump can be stopped. Rubio supporters in ohio should vote for john kasich. Your answer is yes . Yeah. My answer is john kasich is the one candidate in ohio that can beat donald trump. Thats stating the obvious. Basically you have there the Rubio Campaign saying if our supporters want to support john kasich in ohio, go ahead and do it. Thats the best way to defeat trump in ohio. You heard ted cruz and others say this is a lot of games. You did hear ted cruz say it was a lot of games, but you also heard the kasich folks not giving the rubio team the same type of love. Kasichs folks came back and said they didnt necessarily agree that if rubio people voted for kasich in ohio that it would help rubio if the kasich folks voted for him in florida. They said that kasichs folks would win that without rubios folks help. They were pretty tough. It was pretty vicious. I think kasich is about as will to play ball as trump is to show his humility and fear of the lord. Neither one is going to happen any time soon. But, you know, rubio and his folks are right. In ohio if you want to beat trump, then kasich is the guy to do it. If you want to do it in florida, likely rubio is a better bet than cruz but its a close call. But i thought it was not a bad moment for rubios people to say, hey, this is the reality. But it wasnt a position of strength. That ship has sailed. Kayleigh, they were talking about fighting and rhetorical fighting, but theres actual fighting going on at trump rallies on occasions. Mr. Trump put the blame for the violence on bad dudes, the protesters, and he insisted hes not the problem. But the Clinton Campaign and the Sanders Campaign make it very clear that they think he is encouraging violence and this is going to be a campaign issue. I dont think it will be a campaign issue. I think most voters when they look at this violence, theyre willing to recognize that donald trump is drawing crowds as high as 35,000 or more. When youre drawing crowds like that, its not your job to babysit the audience. There are municipal authorities, secret Service Officers to take care of the violence. That is not Donald Trumps job to do that. Some of the protesters are boisterous and throwing punches and some of the supporters are doing violent things but its not Donald Trumps role to stop them, just like it wasnt Barack Obamas role to ensure the black panthers didnt show up at a polling place as they did. I dont know if thats exactly the same thing. Mary katherine, i asked donald trump last night, i read some of the quotes, punch them in the face, if you go to prison ill pay your legal bills. Does he bear any responsibility . Those are fairly clear encouragements. It is true that he does not have to have responsibility for every Single Person in his audience but what the babysitter should not do is say, hey, go out in the backyard and fight it out. That is not his role but thats what he continues to do. Youve got this other incident with Michelle Fields with this other incident against Corey Lewandowski for touching her in a scrum and they have not dealt with this in a serious manner. Hey, something happened, we want to deal with this in a responsible and serious manner and make sure it doesnt happen again aptd thats the part thats not happening. This weekend hear from the democratic candidates, Hillary Clinton and senator Bernie Sanders at the cnn Ohio Democratic president ial town hall with tv1. I will cohost it this sunday night, 8 00 eastern. From red lines to putin to china, were getting an unprecedented look at president obamas world view. What does he consider his proud moment . Whom does he consider an ally . Whom does he consider an enemy . His answers might surprise you. Hi i m kristie. And im jess. And we are the bug chicks. Were a nanobusiness. Windows 10 really helps us get the word out about how awesome bugs are. Kids learn to be brave and curious and all kids speak the language of bug. Hey cortana, find my katydid video. Oh this is so good. If youre trying to teach a kid about a proboscis. Just sketch it on the screen. I dont have a touch screen on my mac, im jealous of that. You put a big bug in a kids hands and change their world view. I love my sister. My heart doesnt see race. Love is love. Welcome back to the lead. Im jake tapper. Topping our world lead today, some remarkable insight into president obamas world view coming from a new article by Jeffrey Goldberg in the atlantic magazine. Its entitled the obama doctrine. Jeff, thank you for joining us. One of the things that struck me most about this very long and brilliant article was the president s view of his 2013 decision that surprised everyone, including his secretary of state and others, not to strike syria even after he declared that the use of chemical weapons by president assad was a red line for the United States and would prompt an attack. He says in your article, quote, im very proud of this moment. The fact that i was able to pull back from the immediate pressures and think through in my own mind what was in americas interest, not only with respect to syria but with respect to our democracy was as tough a decision as ive made and i believe ultimately it was the right decision to make. Obviously critics, including some from within the obama administration, point to this as not his greatest success but his greatest failure. Right, right, so thats why i wanted to go at it because i thought it was a hinge moment in his presidency. What he explained to me is as follows. He was following what he calls the washington playbook, which is you use military force if somebody violates your demands or your wishes. And he realized at a certain point in that process, even though he laid down that red line, that he didnt want to go down what he saw as a very slippery slope toward total engagement in syria. So at the last moment on august 30th of 2013, he decided that, you know what, im not going to do this. Im not going to do what some of my predecessors might have done, im going to find another way to get out of this jam. Its been obviously the source of a great deal of criticism from inside washington and obviously allies in the middle east and europe since then. And obviously the decision looked questionable then and now with the rise of isis and the complete deterioration of the country of syria, hundreds of thousands of lives lost, millions of refugees, isis establishing a caliphate, perhaps it looks even worse. Does the president in any way think that that decision may have helped pave the way to the rise of isis . No, he doesnt. And to be fair, i think its a bit of a leap to think that two or three days of missile strikes at assad regime targets would have stopped everything that has subsequently happened from happening. What he does think and i think this is true, because of a deal that he arainiranged with vladi putin a couple of weeks after this the chemical weapons or most of the chemical weapons came out of syria. So he feels that he solved the problem without going to war which is not what happened with his predecessors. So he feels good about that decision and he feels you could play this counter factual game and guess about what could have happened if he had done x, y or z but he finds those exercises sort of pointless. You have an anecdote that was interesting. The president would often compare the role and rise of isis to a scene in the batman movie the dark knight where all the leaders of all the gangs in gotham are meeting and talking about their territories. Mr. Obama said, quote, the joker comes in and lights the whole city on fire. Isil is the joker and has the capacity to set the whole region on fire. Thats why we have to fight it. But it doesnt that the strategy to fight isil or isis has been that effective. Well, im not here to defend or lambast the administration. I would say that he certainly has raised isis to a Top Tier National security threat, unlike the assad regime, which we were just talking about. He does not consider the assad regime a direct threat to the United States. I think the administration would argue that they are grinding away at the problem. They have not succeeded in building a sunni army, a Sunni Arab Army that will take on isis, but they are using a lot of the tools at their disposal, including special forces, special operators and drone strikes and the like to degrade isis. Its not going as fast as they would like, but one of the things that i did learn is that before he leaves office, he very much wants to see the leadership of that organization destroyed. So that has been a request or an order to his National Security apparatus, to get that done, so his successor doesnt have to deal with at least a powerful isis. Jeffrey goldbergoldberg, tha much. The obama doctrine, how he shaped the world, thanks so much. Its the third rail of american politics because if you touch it, you might die. Were talking about Social Security. There are more 18yearolds who believe they have a better chance of seeing a ufo than a Social Security check. Well, the truth is out there. How do all the candidates plan to address Social Security and the longterm debt crisis . That story next. Welcome back to the lead. Our National Lead now, it is time for our segment americas debt and the economy. Heres a riddle, whats good for marco rubios mother . Potentially less predictable than a ufo citing and is the most expensive item in the federal budget, the answer is Social Security. Within a decade it might run out of money. We asked the republican candidates about this last night. Here is some of what they had to say. Im against any changes to Social Security that are bad for my mother. And we dont have to make any changes for them. But anyone who tells you that Social Security can stay the way it is is lying. It is my absolute intention to leave Social Security the way it is. Not to increase the age and leave it as is. I want to make our country rich again so we can afford it. For seniors, anyone at or near retirement there will be no changes whatsoever. We need to have for younger workers that a portion of your tax payments are in personal accounts like a 401 k that you own, that you control, that you can pass on to your kids and grandkids. There are more 18yearolds who believe they have a better chance of seeing a ufo than a Social Security check. Someone my age would retire at 68. We would allow it to increase for future generations until it hits 70. If we dont do anything, we will have a debt crisis. We will get rid of waste fraud abous. Hillary clinton says hell cut waste, fraud and aabuse. That is the statement of a liberal who doesnt understand government is the problem. I have a plan to fix it. If youve had wealth throughout your lifetime, youll still get it, it will just simply be less. For those people who depend on that Social Security, theyll get their full benefit. Thats the way it will work. If you think the 2016 race is messy, think again. Back in 1860 when Abraham Lincoln and Steven Douglas clashed, the race for the white house was as raucous as modern day politics. His weapon, race hate.
