Surreal to say the least to see that. Many worry the city could again explode in violence violence that president obama said this morning he has seen too many times before. Those were his words. Across the country, as tensions between police and black communities have boiled over weve seen that tension at least for one night stayed mostly at bay here in the city of baltimore. Law enforcement did impose that 10 00 p. M. Citywide curfew and fired smoke canisters to disperse some protesters. Today school was back in session keeping the streets mostly empty for much of the day. Now that school is out crowds in places like north avenue could pick up. And with a report on freddie grays death not expected to be turned over to the states attorney until friday and by the way, that report likely will not be seen. People will not see it. People here remain very ill at ease. Theres a lot to talk about in the hour ahead. John this very strange day over there at the ballpark. Tell us more about what you have been seeing and hearing. Its so interesting. Around the city today, it is a little more normal. People are back to works, kids are back to school. People are driving and eating at restaurants. But its not normal. And this shows you just how abnormal it is. Theyre playing this game in front of nobody. So i dont think theres ever been as much attention on a day baseball game on a wednesday because of how few people were actually watching it in person. Its a reminder i think an important reminder anderson of how far they still have to go here. Yes, last night was not as bad as the night before. Who knows how bad tonight will be . But theyve got a long way to go to make this city feel like it did a week or two weeks or three weeks ago, anderson. Yeah, its not just an issue of stopping the immediate violence. There are much longerterm issues obviously which have been going on here which still need to be addressed. John, stay right there. Well continue to come back to you. Miguel marquez has been with the protesters since monday. Miguel explain where you are and how things are today. Reporter yeah this is pennsylvania and north, penn and north as its known here the place thats seen the worst of the worst, a much, much different feeling today. There was a food drive here earlier. Theyre playing chess out here now. There are people up from d. C. Even who are sort of doing an impromptu job fair in front of the cvs thats burned out. The intersection in front of pennsylvania and north that was like a carnivallike atmosphere yesterday until they cleared the streets is now open again. Feels like a much different day in baltimore. After two nights of unrest local and state police and the National Guard flooding some baltimore streets. The city on alert two days before the expected Police Report on freddie grays controversial death is released to prosecutors. An allnight curfew went into effect tuesday night. Tough to implement but effective. Our sincere hope is that we see what we saw yesterday which is people coming together in a peaceful manner. Reporter only 35 people were arrested since the curfew kicked in compared to 235 arrests during mondays lawlessness. 100 of them are still awaiting charges. With the renewed peace Baltimore City schools reopened on wednesday after beid. The Baltimore Orioles play the Chicago White sox on wednesday afternoon but in an empty stadium. The game closed to the public believed to be the first time thats happened in Major League Baseball history. Two hours earlier, the baltimore Symphony Orchestra played a free concert to entertain the community. After the violence started on monday this video went viral of a mother going into a crowd to pull out her 16yearold masked son and then hitting him repeatedly. To see my son come across the street with a rock in his hand, i think at that point i just lost it. Reporter toya graham tells cbs she used tough love because she wanted to keep him safe and away from the violence. Later that night, some residents angry at Police Rioted looted and set fire to businesses. All of it especially devastating for owners of already struggling businesses like record connection which has has been in the neighborhood for 37 years. How are you going to recover . By the grace of god, were still here. Pick up the pieces. Pick up and start all over. Reporter steven is trying to salvage some of the appliances at his store after smoke from a fire at a nearby shoe store turned them all black. He tells cnn the riots were the final straw. I dont even want to stay in this city anymore. Reporter where are you go . Around the area if i can get to it. The building belongs to me. Ive made up my mind now to sell it. I dont want to be mingled with all these people anymore. Im fed up. Reporter really amazing to talk to the individuals in this neighborhood to hear the stories that are happening here. For as bad as it seemed monday night and as unrecoverable as it seemed today is a much different feeling. Yesterday was still pretty raw. Today feels much better. Baltimore certainly not out of the hot water yesterday. Because as weve seen in other cities it goes in waves and can change in an instant. But right now with all of this happening behind us and this neighborhood kind of coming back together, it feels pretty good, anderson . Yeah and theres certainly still a lot of work to be done. I just was over at toya grahams house, the mom you saw there dragging her son away from those protests when she saw him about to throw a rock at police. My interview with her is on tonight on 360. I also interviewed her son, michael, who was wearing that mask was about to throw that rock about that moment when he suddenly made eye contact with his mom at that demonstration and he knew he was in deep, deep trouble with his mom. Thats tonight. Miguel well check in with you throughout the day. Unlike yesterday, there is a very different scene here throughout the streets. Today, Baltimore Public School students spent the day in class. Thats different. But now the bell has rung. Police are at the ready. There is a heavy Police Presence on the street. I want to go now to our ryan young. And i should point out at the location were at right now at city hall were seeing a large relatively large group, looks like maybe at least 200 protesters maybe 150 protesters walking by city hall. Its not clear if this is a group which was in school earlier and has now come out or if this is a group of older people or mixed but its a group of people marching around the plaza here by city hall. But there is a pretty heavy presence of National Guard, state police as well. Are students now out of class . How is that in the area where youre at . Is that amping up tensions . Are you seeing students out on the streets, ryan . Reporter anderson, we were told they were getting out of class at 3 45. As you can see, theres nothing over here. We havent seen any large groups of students walking this direction or even getting close to this mall area. In fact weve seen more officers than weve seen students. Just in the last five minutes, there was a woman in this parking lot and she rolled up on two kids and said, why are you outside of this mall . They didnt have a good answer and she told them, get home or do you need a ride home . Part of that parenting weve seen over and over from members of the community who are trying to step in. You see these two high School Students walking this direction but you also see the guardsmen standing right there. And well turn this camera just a little over this direction so you can see the large contingent of officers who are in that direction who are on the ready in front of this Grocery Store just in case something happens. But as of right now, all weve had is a handful of students coming in our direction and that one parent who was making sure no one crosses lines so there will be no issues. So far, the notice here is all good. Anderson . Ryan, thanks very much. Thats really that was the story yesterday as well as today, the difference that parents and Volunteers Church groups pastors, just individuals, men in the community have made to police themselves to Police Others standing often between crowds and the police just trying to keep things peaceful protests. Thats what were seeing right now, certainly outside city hall. I want to go back to john berman at camden yards. I heard ben jealous say last night he called on the clergy and Community Leaders to go out and be giants. The orioles just won, 82, they beat the white sox and no one was in the stadium behind me to see it because of the security concerns a long way to go to get things back here. Athena jones is in the Sandtown Winchester neighborhood of baltimore, one of the toughest and poorest neighborhoods in this city also one of the places that freddie gray lived. Athena while you were on with me early today on this hour, you spoke with the Maryland Governor larry hogan. What did he have to say to you this morning . Reporter thats right. Im next to a memorial to freddie gray. I asked Governor Hogan how he thought last night went. I asked him if he thought it was a turning point. He said it was but there were still some areas of concern. Take a listen. It was a great night. But its not over yet. Theres still a lot of frustrations still a lot of hostility, still anger in the community and people out there that want to make trouble and still some folks out there that want to get things out of control that dont want to do things in a peaceful way like the majority of the people do. Reporter the governor said theyll have as many resources on the streets as they need to until theyre certain the situation will remain calm and peaceful. John . Athena jones for us having just spoken to the governor of maryland who also told athena that he doesnt think that he did anything wrong here and has no regrets over the way things have been handled here. There will be questions about that Going Forward although right now theres concentration on what happens tonight and tomorrow and the next few days. Lost in the violence of what has gone on here and monday night is the reason that the protests started more than a week ago to begin with freddie grays mysterious death while in Police Custody. And just two days the initial Police Investigation into his death should be wrapped up. Will the information be released to the public . Thats next. Big day . Ah, the usual. Moved some new cars. Hauled a bunch of steel. Kept the supermarket shelves stocked. Made sure everyone got their latest gadgets. Whats up for the next shift . Ah, nothing much. Just keeping the lights on. laugh nice. Youre looking at live pictures and the location that were at theres a Helicopter Shot from wjz from right in front of the courthouse which is also just about 300 feet or so from city hall, the location were at. Thats the group of protesters i was talking about earlier who arrived here probably 15 minutes ago and are now standing outside the courthouse area. Some people are making speeches and talking. And these are the kind of roving protests that weve seen a lot over the last 24 hours or so. Were also anticipating a press conference from Law Enforcement officials. Well obviously bring that to you. Were expecting a press conference from the Baltimore Police department any moment. Well take that live. And in just two days that department is going to wrap up their investigation into the death of freddie gray. The Police Report is going to be sent directly to prosecutors, not necessarily released publicly. In fact i talked to the attorney for the gray family on friday whos trying to tamp down peoples expectations that on friday theyre going to get some sort of word about the results from that investigation. The lack of answers, though into what happened to freddie gray whose spine was severed has certainly inflamed days of protests and mondays outbreak of violence. Cell phone videos of gray being drag dz inside that police van have angered people for weeks. The mysteries of what happened to him, were his injuries sustained during the arrest or inside that vehicle . If so, how . Six officers involved in the arrest are on paid leave but did any of their actions lead to freddie grays death . We dont have any injuries. We want to bring in cnns evan perez. Baltimore leaders are working to come up with a game plan, right . Thats right. Theyre trying to lower the expectations for the report coming out on friday. Well hear a little bit more about that game plan in the next few hours from city officials. The problem that they have right now is that the investigation this is going to be a preliminary report offered up this is the Police Department report . Police department report. And it is considered preliminary because theyll continue their investigation. Its not going to provide any complete answers, not even to the state prosecutors. The issue is this even at this point, they dont believe that theres any clearcut answers here as to what happened. Theres no roadmap here for charges just yet. Theyre still waiting for some very key things including the medical examiners report which could be weeks away. The last i heard, this was probably four, five days ago. Five of the six officers had given preliminary statements. Do we know if that sixth officer has or is he still maintaining his right to remain silent . What we know so far is that its simply been five of the six. That doesnt mean the sixth is guilty of anything. Right. I want to bring in our senior legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin who is standing by. Jeff, youre a former federal prosecutor. What if anything do you think were going to hear about this report on friday . Will details be released or leaked out or will the prosecutor want to keep it close to the vest if she builds a potential case . You know i think thats a really tough call. There are a lot of competing pressures. Under ordinary circumstances, you wouldnt hear much because this is preliminary and usually this begins a process of giveandtake with the prosecutors where the prosecutors say, look i need you to interview the following three or four more witnesses, i want to get the following tests done. Preliminary means preliminary. Here of course theres tremendous demand. I would anticipate that the family of freddie gray would be brought in and informed at least somewhat about the information thats been gathered. But as you pointed out just a couple of minutes ago, there is a lot that remains mysterious about how freddie gray died and what caused it. And its going to take more time to determine that and especially to determine if anybody needs to be criminally charged in connection with it. Sunny hostin former federal prosecutor is also joining us and she is also friends with the mayor of baltimore. I talked to the attorney for the gray family last night and he was saying look i want to tamp down the protesters expectations that friday theyre going to get some vital information. And he doesnt want them getting upset on friday when that information is not forthcoming because hes arguing for the gray family and for the prosecutor they want to keep their strategy close to the vest. They dont want to give out all the information thats going to let anyone who may be potentially indicted know exactly whats coming. I think thats right. Its really important in a case like this to manage everyones expectations because all eyes are on how the Prosecutors Office will handle this. And i think further along in the process, quite frankly, is going to be very interesting because prosecutors as jeff toobin knows have two potential tracks. Weve seen that play out. You can either choose to charge yourself as the prosecutor because that is well within your jurisdiction or you can choose to bring whatever evidence you have to a grand jury. So people need to understand that not only does the investigation have to continue because if im the prosecutor i do want to see forensic evidence. I may want to bring in some experts to help me discern what happened in terms of the autopsy. And i think you also have to recognize that a prosecutor once that person has all the evidence also has to determine which track to follow. Jeff in terms of a time line how long a process are we talking about . Well just for starters according to the usually procedure in maryland a full autopsy is not presented until 30 to 45 days after the autopsy takes place. That pushes the time line out considerably. And that at least to me based on what i know is going to be perhaps the single most important piece of evidence in this case. How did freddie gray die . What was the cause of death . And there is no guarantee that an autopsy will present the answer to that question which means you may have to bring more experts. So i think a month, two months is far from out of the question. It is far better though i think to be late, to be slow than to be wrong. And i think if it takes a while its going to take a while. But it really is important for prosecutors and police to get this one right. On another subject, youre friends with the mayor, today she came out and said basically that she got it wrong, that she shouldnt have called the young people who were being violent on the streets monday thugs. She regretted that. Its interesting shes now come forward and said that. I have been critical of the mayor in terms of those remarks. She is a very close friend of mine. But i was surprised she chose to use that word. She is very measured, shes a critical thinker. Sheesz shes sensitive to the issues facing communities of color. What is also interesting to me is that people are saying that she has sort of this apathetic way about here that she seemed to be flatfooted. I know because i know her personally that she is someone that does not wear her emotion on her sleeve. She is very measured just as a person. And so the fact that she used that term shows me that she was very very almost upset about what was going on. Its one of the things i talked to toya graham the mom who famously dragged her son, michael, out of the protests when she saw him about to throw a rock. She made a very good point saying my son has made some mistakes and my son is not a thug. 16 years old, has dreams of what he wants to be. And that was something that offended her, i believe, even though she was the mom who has been identified as the kind of mom who cares for her kid and was dragging her kid out it is offensive. And i have received i dont know how many tweets and emails in response to my suggestion yesterday that the word thug has become racialized. Im not saying its a racial term. But its also used as a term for young africanamerican men. And we have to be very careful when we call people that name. You certainly call someone a criminal if they are committing arson and assault and thievery. Sunny and jeff appreciate you being with us. Still a lot to talk about in this hour. Coming up were awaiting the police press conference. Well bring that to you live. Well take a short break. Plus the Baltimore Orioles just trounced the Chicago White sox. None of their fans got to see it in person. Whats it like playing in a totally empty stadium . Details on that from our john berman ahead. Caring for someone with alzheimers means i am a lot of things. I am his sunshine. I am his advocate. So i asked about adding oncedaily namenda xr to his Current Treatment for moderate to severe alzheimers. It works differently. When added to another alzheimers treatment, it may improve overall function and cognition. And may slow the worsening of symptoms for a while. Vo namenda xr doesnt change how the disease progresses. This is a press conference by Baltimore City police. Lets listen in. The peaceful expressions that weve seen today. This is in alignment with what we are used to seeing in baltimore and were very pleased about that. We anticipate that there will be a group of protesters later this evening around 5 30 to 6 00 at penn state, which is our train station just north of where we are now. We anticipate that that will be a large group that will march. From what we understand right now, they will march through the city to city hall. We are asking that they remain peaceful. As with all of the groups that weve seen with all of the gatherings that weve seen and marches that weve seen well evaluate our response on how we handle then on a casebycase, individual basis. So long as people remain peaceful in their expression we continue to support everyones First Amendment rights and their ability to voice concern. As of this afternoon, we dont have any new arrests. We have not had any major or significant incidents connected to the demonstrations throughout the city. And we continue to have officers spread throughout the city able to respond to any incident should that arise. Finally, i want to clear up some confusion. There is this theres a lot of conversation about the report that is supposed to be issued. There is not a report. And we want to be clear here. There is not a report thats going to be issued. What we are going to do, which is unique is turn over all of our findings all of our investigative efforts to the States Attorneys Office. Those findings we have an obligation to be accountable to the people of baltimore in this investigation. We know there are a lot of people who want answers, who have concerns that they want to have addressed. And we have an obligation to do our best to be accountable. We cannot release all of the information from this investigation to the public because if there is a decision to charge in any event by the States Attorneys Office the integrity of that investigation has to be protected. So by turning these documents, our findings over to the States Attorneys Office as quickly as we can, we are being accountable to them so that we can be accountable to the public. I hope that answers and clears up any concerns or confusion about that report. We continued to see reports of that and we wanted to address any confusion that might be there. Ill take a few questions. [ inaudible ] our hope is to be able to provide as many updates as we can, whatever new information that we might be able to share, our hope is to continue to be able to do that. We will continue to brief what weve seen updating as often as as much as possible when were able to do so. [ inaudible ] were incredibly thankful to our state partners to our local partners to the National Guard, everyone thats come into the city to help us as we move through these days. Those resources have enabled us to be able to have a presence throughout the city, to respond to situations and emergencies. Were also dealing with normal calls for service, normal things that we see in the city being investigated by our detectives being handled in the same way we would handle any other crimes that occur in the city. Anyone else . Well continue to brief every hour hour and a half. Well see you all in a little bit. Thank you all very much. Youve been listening to captain Eric Kowalczyk of the Baltimore City Police Department. No new arrests to speak of today. No new incidents today to speak of. And there is a protest, a demonstration planned for a little bit later today in the 5 00 hour from penn station, the main train station here. People will march down to where anderson is standing at city hall. But this is a protest, a demonstration and police say they hope it is a peaceful demonstration, the likes of which were seeing here for a full week. But the most interesting piece of information there was we began to see them trying to reduce the expectations on this report that will be turned over to the states attorney on friday. There are a lot of people here in this city i know youve been talking to them who have this notion that theyre going to find out a whole bunch of information all at once on friday and maybe even find out if there will be officers charged. We were just talking about that. This officer made clear that that is not likely at all. Its much more likely to find out nothing on friday. He simply said theyre going to turn over this information and theres a great need to keep much of this information secret. He didnt i suppose, rule out the possibility that the states attorney can make some of it public. But evan perez was saying to me earlier today, they are talking behind the scenes right now to try to figure out a way to reduce these expectations by friday so people are not disappointed. And thats something i talked to the gray family attorney about as i mentioned on my broadcast last night. It was interesting, after he was talking about this on the air with me there was a group of protesters standing behind me probably maybe at one point 100 or so. He actually went to them and got them quiet and he kind of gave them that message directly. Helped them to spread that message to other protesters not to expect a lot of information coming out friday thats going to answer questions about how freddie gray sustained the injuries that ultimately led to his death because that information most likely is not going to come out friday. And its interesting hearing the Baltimore Police talking about the demonstration thats going to come here. Im not sure if he was referring to the demonstrators who we were broadcasting live during his comments because that was a group which had arrived in front of the courthouse and that was actually a group somewhat different than what weve seen. That was kind of a probaltimore demonstration, a lot of People Holding up signs saying we love baltimore, dont tear baltimore down build it up, people wanting to show a different side of the city and also emphasize kind of the need for rebuilding for new growth in baltimore. Theyve actually now walked by and are continuing to move on. So it will be interesting to see if another group of protesters comes to this courthouse area. Well be following that. The outrage obviously over freddie grays death in Police Custody still very real and spreading across the country. Weve already seen protests across the country. Protests planned in several cities though tonight and last night as well, crowds gathered in ferguson. Rocks were thrown at police. Thats coming up. Vo todays the day. Shell use that job to buy a home. This is lilly baker. Her mom just refinanced their home and is putting an extra 312 a month toward lillys tuition. Lilly is about to take over the world. Whos with her . Welcome back to the lead. Im Anderson Cooper live in baltimore. Youre looking at a live shot of the courthouse. Demonstrators were out there a short time ago as the tensions here simmer. There are signs that the movement to get answers about the death of freddie gray is spreading across the country. I want to show you a map here from los angeles to ferguson, missouri, and new york city, protests are springing up in a show of solidarity. In ferguson, hundreds gathered in the streets last night calling for an end to police brutality. Rocks were hurled at officers. During those protests, three people were shot. A cell phone video actually captured the sounds of gunshots as people ran for cover. It wasnt shooting from the police. Police say a suspect is in custody. You can hear the shots there. Police say a suspect is in custody for one of those shootings. There were also reports of looting at a gas station and trash cans set on fire. A curfew remains in place for baltimore here tonight and for the rest of the week. Will it be enough to help keep the peace . I want to bring in this pastor whos organized peaceful protests for freddie gray since the beginning of all this. Thank you for being with us. The governor said earlier he believes a corner has been turned. Theres still obviously a lot of work to be done. Do you believe a corner has been turned . I do believe that. Theres a glimmer of expectation believing its going to turn around. All over the city today people were cleaning up and believing the best in baltimore is getting ready to happen. One of the things you have been doing today is youve been out in schools talking about to people. Weve been talking about it a lot on the broadcast. How concerned are you that theres this expectation among people that friday theyre going to get an answer about what happened to freddie gray . Not necessarily of people but of teenagers specifically. Weve been in high schools and they resoundingly have been saying pastor, what are we going to do friday . About what . They really had to have the understanding, a verdict is not being rendered. Its just seeing whether theres enough evidence to even press charges and the people have to understand we have three different investigations happening Baltimore City the states attorney and the department of justice. It is my hope that one of the three is going to get it right. So having to do that educational process is really a herculean task. And thats one of the things. Even the preliminary investigation by police that information is not going to be made public in all likelihood. Thats what the Community Leaders are begging to not happen. Friday in the event that it is not the expected end that we dont have a weekend of chaos and confusion. Turning a corner in terms of violence that we saw on monday night and clearly last night was a different story largely thanks to efforts by you, other Community Leaders, faith leaders, who stood on the barricades barricades, who stood between the police and crowds. Theres also a longerterm issue thats existed in baltimore. Do you see a renewed interest a renewed commitment to forging ahead to making progress on those issues . I think a renewed commitment by the people, not by the establishment. The bandaid has been ripped off. And you need more than iodine. We need open heart surgery. The reality, anderson that nobody is dealing with is that freddie gray was apprehended, 8 48 in the morning. And he was not headed to work. When you will consider that 64 of those who live in that zip code are on some level of public assistance its a great economic disparity. Its not just criminal justice. But when it is these people have to hear that the officers are on paid vacation and they dont have money to feed their children it raises the ire of why it is that theyre upset. I was just talking to toya graham who now famously grabbed her son and brought him out of the protests. She was saying look theres nothing for my son to do in this neighborhood, theres no community center. Theres no he loves to play basketball. Theres not a Basketball Team at his school. Theres just nothing to do for a lot of young people in a lot of the communities. Heres the difference from the other two cities that are protesting in allegiance with us both ferguson and in new york and if we drop further to sanford where Trayvon Martin is from. Three of those cities have a white mayor, a white president city council and a white commissioner. Ours is black. Ours is a blue and green issue. Its about the police having greater protection than the citizens and the economic disparity. You go blocks before you find any level of business. There has to be a demand on what are we going to do for the thriving and the development of Small Businesses in that community . I host the largest job fair in this city and quite frankly businesses dont want to come because they believe that baltimoreans by and large are only prepared for entry level jobs. There has to be an area of job training. Pastor i appreciate your work. Thank you so much. Thank you very much, pastor jamal bryant. John berman at camden yards, back over to you. So interesting saying the wounds require not just iodine but open heart surgery. And theres a National Political aspect to this. And whats happening in this city has become a campaign issue. Hillary clinton, rand Paul Ben Carson former Maryland Governor Martin Omalley are all among those weighing in. During a speech today, former secretary clinton used the events here in baltimore as really the backdrop for her call for criminal Justice Reform. I want to go to our senior Political Correspondent brianna keilar. Brianna, i suppose we should be encouraged the candidates are talking about one of the most important issues facing this country today. We should be encouraged and youll see, though john its definitely a fine line that theyre walking between supporting Law Enforcement and keeping the peace. And then on the other hand really acknowledging the frustration over the deaths of freddie gray and other young black men. But this issue is so pressing that youre seeing so many of these candidates and potential candidates weighing in and today that included Hillary Clinton. What we have seen in baltimore should indeed i think does tear at our soul. Reporter Hillary Clinton responding to the death of freddie gray and the baltimore riots with a call to reform the criminal Justice System her first major policy push of the campaign. Its time to change our approach. Its time to end the era of mass incarceration. Reporter clinton lobbied as first lady for her husbands 1994 crime bill that many critics say contributed to high rates of incarceration in the u. S. Now shes calling for dramatic changes to sentences for nonviolent offenders, referencing the recent policeinvolved killings of eric garner in new york and walter scott in south carolina, she proposed that body cameras be mandatory for Police Departments across the country. For every tragedy caught on tape there surely have been many more that remained invisible, not every problem can be or will be prevented by cameras. But this is a commonsense step we should take. Reporter in baltimore, former mayor Martin Omalley took to the streets. The reception at times, angry over omalleys zero tolerance approach to policing as mayor nearly a decade ago. People are saying, get out of here. People have been very nice to me. Youve got to be present in the middle of the pain, man. Were all everyones needed right now in our city. Everybody needs to step up. You see a lot of really good people out there that are stepping up. Reporter criminal Justice Reform is a crowded political space. A book of policy prescriptions out yesterday includes chapters by omalley and clinton as well as republican candidates like ted cruz and rand paul who made this quip im glad the train didnt stop. Reporter he discussed what he sees as the cause of the riots. The breakdown of the family structure, the lack of fathers, the lack of sort of a moral code in our society. This isnt just a racial thing. It goes across racial boundaries. Conservative candidate ben carson also weighed in. You may recall he was a longtime doctor at Johns Hopkins hospital there in baltimore. And he said that parents and guardians need to take control of children so that they can protect them. You also had jeb bush in puerto rico weighing in talking about the balance between rule of law and also getting answers that are so key in this case of freddie gray. And Chris Christie actually sent Law Enforcement help here to help in the city of baltimore, too. An issue all the candidates should address and will address in the coming months. Brianna keilar, thanks so much. Coming up for us who was freddie gray . A difficult life raised by a heroinaddicted mother who couldnt read and trouble in school possibly connected to lead point poisoning. I went to his Old Neighborhood to talk to those who knew him best. Plus police saying they are preparing for large crowds tonight, protests demonstrations. But will be there tension, violence between protesters and police . Jeff. Hey, scott this is no time for lollygaggin, lad. The chickweed and the dandelions are reekin mad havoc nows the time to send in the scotts turf builder weed and feed, man it kills weeds while it feeds and strengthens your grass. Feed your lawn. Feed it dear stranger, when i booked this trip, my friends said i was crazy. Why would i stay in someone elses house . But this morning a city ive never been to felt like one i already knew. I just wanted to thank you for sharing your world with me. It felt like home. Airbnb. Belong anywhere. Welcome back to the lead. Police Just Announced that they expect the crowds to grow tonight here in baltimore. Schools are now out for the afternoon. We have seen groups of peaceful protests all day long in different parts of the city. Also on the streets right now, a much heavier Police Presence backed up by the National Guard. I want to go to cnns Miguel Marquez in the middle of one demonstration. Miguel explain where you are and what youre seeing. Reporter this is north and pennsylvania avenues, north and penn as its known here. And perhaps maybe just out of the chaos that weve seen in recent days a little bit of order is starting to take place. The intersection here is now open. We did see National Guard with their humvees come through earlier. Its a little strange to see that in a city like this. The cvs that burned the other day was here. What also happened here today was a bit of an impromptu jobs fair. People from washington, d. C. Coming up here that needed employees and they were coming up to talk to the community here about getting them employed. Also there was a food drive here earlier in the day. And now its sort of turned into a chessoff here in the neighborhood as well. I think theres expectation that things are going to happen that are probably negative in the days ahead. But for now, theres a sense of optimism that perhaps the worst is behind this neighborhood and the city. A couple of points coming up in the next couple of days i think will press the people of this neighborhood. And its something that they are looking for, whether its the report from the police to the d. A. They will certainly want to hear that its on the right track. All those things very much in play here and people hoping though, at this point that the worst is behind them. Anderson . Miguel you and your team have been doing really impressive work. Thank you so much for joining us. I want to go back over to john berman at camden yards. John . Thanks so much, anderson. Its now been ten days since the death of freddie gray the man who suffered what is literally an inexplicable brutal injury while in the custody of Baltimore Police. Since then grays name and image have been used as a symbol for the notion of the movement against police brutality. But he was a 24yearold man, a son, a father. Before america heard his name chanted in the streets before his own characterize echoed across news reels and spurred riots across his city freddie gray was struggling to make a life for himself here and building a long rap sheet along the way. This right here was the home that freddie gray lived in toward the end of his life. People in the neighborhood say he didnt grow up here. Hed been here for about a year or so. He came and went always said hello, seemed like a nice guy, they say. They never saw any sign of any trouble. But the Baltimore Sun report that is grays life was marked by Financial Hardship from the very beginning. He was raised in a home so squalid, they won a settlement over the landlord because of lead poisoning. Crumbling lead paint, holes in the wall lots of dust that was suspected to be contaminated with lead. They made the connection to problems he ultimately had in school. He was put in special ed classes. His sisters testified that they had to repeat grades. Reporter his mother has given only brief statements to the media. Dont kill the whole city just for him. Reporter Family Friends tell cnn she lost a son to violence just 18 months before freddies death. It hurt my heart to know that she lost one son due to street violence and another due to police brutality. Reporter but her own deposition in the 2009 lead paint lawsuit revealed much more. His mother spoke about never getting past middle school. She said she has never been able to read and she was not able to help her children with their homework past a certain level. Reporter she also testified at the time that she was getting treatment for a daily heroin habit, a long list of drugrelated arrests show her son was no stranger to narcotics either. His brotherinlaw says the drug business helped gray support his family. When people come to buy narcotics or gamble or anything with their money in their hand and they put it in your hand what makes you so bad . He had responsibilities. Responsibilities dont stop because you dont have a job. Reporter in some baltimore neighborhoods, a life like freddie grays is all too familiar. We want justice for all the future freddie grays out here. Reporter his death, while in the hands of a strained police force, is a fate his fellow residents dont want to fear so theyre using his name in an effort for change. Anderson its really interesting. People are talking today about how the city is returning to something close to normal. But i think its important to note that normal isnt always good. When we were back in that neighborhood that house where freddie gray lived for the last year or so, people were very nice to me. They didnt want to appear on camera. They were very nice but it was notable there were so many people around working age men mostly, who were not at work. I dont know if they had jobs or not, the Unemployment Rate among africanamericans here is very, very high. So its just a reminder that the challenges even when the situation is normal here in baltimore, those challenges are considerable, anderson. Theres no doubt about it. That was reiterated to me just a short time ago. I talked with toya graham the mom who famously grabbed her son, michael, dragged him out of a protest on monday night, thats the video now that people have seen all around the world, frankly. She has six kids. She got laid off from a job recently. Shes been a caregiver for a long time. She doesnt have a job. Shes going to have trouble making her rent. So for all the attention shes getting, she is very much in need of employment and is looking for a job. And so were going to talk to her tonight about that moment that has now been watched so often and commented on by so many people. Well also talk to her son michael about what it was like the moment he made eye contact with his mom. He had a rock in his hand. He had a mask over his face but she recognized him from his baggy pants. And he said when she made eye contact with him, it was like world war iii started for him when she came after him. Police have noted here by the way, we should note there are 111 people who were arrested monday night in the violence and the riots here. 111 people who were arrested but have not been charged as of now. And if they are not charged within 48 hours of their arrests, theyre going to have to be released. Police say they will try to make the charges over the next days and weeks if they can. But they dont have the police power to charge them because all the police are out here on the streets trying to keep things safe. Important thing to point out and to continue to follow. John thank you very much for joining us. Thats it for the lead. Im Anderson Cooper with john berman. Jake tapper will be back tomorrow. Ill be back tonight live from baltimore, 8 00 p. M. Eastern till 10 00 p. M. Eastern tonight. Heres wolf blitzer now in the situation room. Happeninggame protest organizers schedule a rally this hour in baltimore. And with the sun going down soon after that, will things heat back up . Aftermath, the governor says baltimore has turned the corner. But more than 200 people have been jailed and as police examine Surveillance Video from the rioting, will hundreds more join them . And police are keeping quiet about their probe of freddie grays death but due to present their findings to prosecutors this week. Will it spark new unrest . Im wolf blitzer. Youre in the situation room. The breaking news organizers are
