The pilots kept eerilyrieareriely sigh lint. How soon before we know why this plane went down . And the loss. Were learning the first details of exactly who these passengers were. Families, babies 16 high schoolers. Their class trip turned into a tragedy. Welcome to the lead. Im john berman in for jake tapper. We begin with breaking news in our world lead. Right now in the french alps. Recovery crews just suspended operations. Darkness forcing them to stand down. That word recovery is all too telling. The 150 people on board this plane, Germanwings Flight 2555 are all likely gone. French aviation investigators are in possession of a black box. Theyre trying to figure out just why the jet went down this morning. Aif french official tells cnn the airbus a320 slammed into a cliff side and was in his words completely obliterated. Video captured from helicopters hints at just how big the debris field is bodies remain and littered the mountain terrain. French Authorities Say its unlikely crews will retrieve any of the victims tonight. Cnn is working the story all over the globe. Well start with cnn aviation correspondent rene marsh. Rene, such a mystery about what happened to the u. S. Planeplane. The u. S. Says its likely not terrorism, but what do we know . What we know actually makes the crash even more perplexing. This airbus a320 has an impeccable maintenance record. It received a maintenance check yesterday and the pilot had been applying with the airline for more than ten years. What could have gone wrong . Critical could answering that will be the debris and the black boxes. Tonight this is the challenge pg rocky terrain First Responders and investigators are navigating, Germanwings Flight 9525 with 150 people went down in the snowy french alps with peaks as high as 10,000 feet. What seemed like a routine flight from barcelona to dusseldorf turned deadly. It took off at 10 01 local time. Tracking site showed the plane climbed to a cruising altitude of 38,000 feet but only stayed there for about three minutes before starting an unplanned descent. It seems to me that it was still a controlled descent. Reporter 45 minutes after takeoff, the airlines ceo says the plane held at 10,000 feet for about a minute. Eight minutes later, air Traffic Controllers lost contact with the plane. Its last known altitude 6,000 feet. Then flight 9525 disappeared from radar. Translator a terrible very sad day for germanwings and the whole louvre thauz saturdayust thauz thaunz saturday family. Reporter a Government Official said the plane was, quote obliterated. Human remains strewn meters. French Authorities Say the pilot did not send a distress call or signal that there was trouble. It was air Traffic Control that declared an emergency because they couldnt reach the pilots by radio. Leaving many unanswered questions. Normally, even if youre on an oxygen mask in a depressurized plane or plane filled with smoke, you still will transmit on the radio, you still will set your transponder to the emergency code that air Traffic Control would pick up. If theyre overcome in some fashion, they may not have been able to respond. Authorities say ground teams have located one of the planes black boxes, critical in finding out what went wrong within board this plane thats considered the workhorse of aviation. In speaking with several pilots today, it really is puzzling as to why the pilots in the cockpit didnt speak at all to air Traffic Control. We know the rule is you aviate, navigate, then communicate. So this could be an indication they were trying to get the plane under control until the very last minute. Or it could be a situation as you heard that pilot say that they were perhaps incapacitated. Regardless of what, they need to find out what caused this. Were talking about more than 6200 of these planes trying in the air worldwide today. Good point, rene. Six to eight minutes with no communication is an awful long time. Rene marsh, thank you. Nick robertson is closely watching that authorities are doing to work the scene. Knick is nic joins me now by telephone. Nic, the searchers now have suspended their efforts for the night. Whats the latest . Reporter well its been raining at the higher altitudes. We understand that clouds have been down on the mountains which has made it harder for the search efforts to continue. The aircraft location discovered, but were being told that it will be perhaps below zero temperatures tonight, the snow is potentially forecast and because the ground is at freezing conditions it means actually putting recovery workers on the ground more complicated. They will need special equipment to see how steep and rugged that terrain is. So at the moment the operations for recovery for tonight are suspended. They are expected to begin in the morning. How quickly however is very much weather dependent. Officials are saying the recovery effort could take quite some time, john. Nic, its a german aircraft that crashed in france with passengers all over europe. Whos in charge right now of the investigation . Caller well the air accident investigation will be led by the French Agency the bea, the french accident investigation agency. They say they will have seven investigations. Initially, technical advisers at least one from airbus itself also the efu, the German Air Accident Investigation Authority there essentially the french of the bea will be sending a threeman team to assist with that investigation. Obviously getting onto the site is going to be key for the teams. But it is the french that will be taking the lead in this. Nic robertson moving toward the scene of that crash. Again, the search suspended for the night. A complicated day with a serious effort in store tomorrow. Thanks so much nic. I want to bring in of the former chair of the National Transportation safety board and president of the National Safety council, deborah hirschman. Over the last few hours weve seen pictures from this crash site, this debris field in the words of vettors there, you can see how that flight was completely obliterated. How will investigators now work this field to find clues about what happened to this aircraft . What do you see . You know, i would say a lot of times were focused on the technology but really its the environmental challenges that Mother Nature has to offer with the fall of night. Were really going to be suspending whats going on on the ground. Thats super challenging for investigators, particularly in a 24hour world where everyone is looking for new information and looking for updates. Then were going to have weather challenges compounding it. And i think that makes it really hard to get on scene, to find what they need, and to do it safely. You want to make sure youre protecting all of the Emergency Responders that are doing recovery operations swlts the ss as well as the investigators. Obviously you have to protect the searchers. Their safety is paramount. But what do you lose over time . Do clues disappear . You know as long as the scene is not disturbed, either by humans or by other environmental conditions, you probably are going to be able to have some sense of whats going on really getting those recorders is going to be critical critical. Once they pick the recorders up and actually get them probably in this case to the beas facility and their lab in paris, they can read those recorders out really quickly. That will help guide the investigation to look for clues in that debris field. If theyre look looking for a component part or some part of the aircraft it will help guide what theyre looking for. They do have one of those black boxes in hand presumably on the way to be analyzed as we speak. President obama said something interested today. He said the u. S. Is still assessing how Many Americans were on board that plane. It was interesting phraseology. It made me wonder why does it take so long in this day and age to know how Many Americans were on board . Isnt that something that should be immediately available . You know, i would say the good thing in aviation is at least you have a apassenger manifest. But you really have to crosscheck the man iifest to make sure that all of the people who purchased tickets actually got on the plane and you know where they originated. They may or may not be citizens of the country where they started. We live in an international world. Everybody is connected. You dont want to make a false statement particularly when it comes to the victims of a crash. You want to make sure all the ts are crossed and is are dotted. It does take time notification of next of kin is usually the first priority. Fair point. One of the big mysteries in this investigation right now is why the plane descended that 14,000 feet over six to eight minutes just before a crash. It appears according to the aviation experts we talked with that it was a consistent descent indicating it wasdescent. What does it tell you . I think its really so early. Theres a lot of speculation occurring. But until they get some of that hard data from the aircraft or are able to identify some evidence, some really hard evidence, i think its all speculation. Its telling us that there was a controlled descent. It doesnt appear that it was a loss of control in flight where you see the aircraft plummeting or stalling very quickly. But i think theres still so much that we dont know. Once they read out those recorders and whether they get the cockpit voice recorder or the flight data recorder either one of those recorders is going to give them a lot more information than what weve got to go on right now. Not having any communication with atc, not having any distress calls or reports of equipment malfunctions, we just dont know. Not to have any communication over that six to eight minute period engage ndd in that rapid, controlled descent that seems like an awful long time not to communicate if they believed there was something wrong. Thats absolutely right. But, you know the challenges right now we dont know if there was problems with their equipment, with their radios. Theres just a lot unknown right now. Aircraft have become so dependable. We see really literally thousands of flights every day all around the world that take off and land safely that its really understanding what went wrong here to make sure the rest of the fleet is safe and that weve identified any problems that might exist in other aircraft. Thats why theres a sense of urgency here not just for those families but for everyone else that flies. The aircraft have been so dependable. Its why when there are events like this finding out the answers to what happened is so crucial. Deborah deborah, thanks so much for being with us. Thank you. So we know that the weather was good as the plane did actually make it to cruising altitude. So what might have possibly gone wrong in there are three different theories that might explain that sixminutelong descent and why the pilots didnt issue a distress call right before the crash. Well lay them out, next. The promise of the cloud is that every organization has unlimited access to information, no matter where they are. The microsoft cloud gives our team the power to instantly deliver critical information to people, whenever they need it. Here at accuweather we get up to 10 billion Data Requests every day. They work just as fast and are proven to taste better than tums smoothies assorted fruit. Mmm. Amazing. Yeah, i get that a lot. Alka seltzer heartburn reliefchews. Enjoy the relief. Were back with breaking news in our world lead. French authorities now have one of the black boxes from todays germanwings plane crash. That device could be critical in determining what went wrong. All 150 people on board that plane are feared dead. Flight 9525 left barcelona at 10 01 this morning. At 10 53 the plane had its last contact with french radar over the alps. Flight trackers on line show the plane had a sharp decline. The question is why. Tom foreman is looking into the theories. Tom, one of the possibilities that people are discussing is there was some kind of catastrophic failure. Yeah absolutely. Thats one of the ideas, something just simply came apart in the air. There are reasons why that would certainly bring a plane down but maybe didnt happen here. Think about this. Its making this flight along this path. This a workhorse plane, does a very good job flying in a lot of places. If it loses a wing or a tail or some big part, it is going to come down seemingly a lot faster than a lot more irregularly than it did in the flight track weve seen on top of which all of this wreckage seems to be in one spot, not scattered all over the place. Same thing if you had a catastrophic fire on board and made the crew pass out. Could that happen . Yeah, but they have oxygen masks that drop down immediately if they have trouble. Its unlikely that happened and still produce that steady flight to the ground. What about the idea that there was a problem and the pilots reacted to what was going on too late . Yes. Lets see you had a serious problem and they thought, we can deal with this we just need a little bit of time. That fits the model that weve been talking about here so often, all day long weve talked to pilots and talked to aviation analysts and crash investigators who have said look at the pattern of this descent down to the ground. They say its so uniform and the speed stayed between 500 and 400 miles an hour of. It looks like this was being done on purpose, some effort to deal with a problem. If thats the case john if they knew they had a problem they were trying to get down why didnt they go to one of the many airports available to them really fairly close . And they would have had a chance. But no effort of trying to turn nothing like that. It does beg the question is it possible, tom, there was a problem and they simply didnt know . This sounds like a crazy idea, but it absolutely is possible, john. In a cockpit they have to rely on their instrumentation. So if you have for example, some equipment that is giving you a wrong sense of your air speed like a frozen that weve talking about, giving you a wrong indication of how high you are in the air or you become so fixated on one thing youre not paying attention, the truth is this plane could be making its way to the ground and when you hear the alarms and you see the mountains coming towards you it is simply too late to do anything about it. It sounds impossible but that sort of thing has happened before john. These are the questions. With the flight recorders in hand, perhaps well get answers quickly. Tom foreman, thank you. Lets bring in our panel. David stoosy a former faa inspector and author of why planes crash and les obviousen is a former airline pilot. David, tom foreman laid out some scenarios there. Based on what youve seen so far today, do any of you jump out to you as the most likely . I see the third one does. Its happened before as tom had mentioned. An l1011 crashed into dallas with similar circumstances when they were ultra focused on thelights. All three members in the cockpit focused all their attention on that and simply literally didnt see the plane had come off autopilot and fell short of the runway. In this scenario its highly unlikely, but what we have to look at is this controlled descent. Its almost as if the autopilot had been set at that altitude and this aircraft made that descent because to maintain the air speed at that particular speed, as closely as they did during this entire descent, takes a concentrated effort or the autopilot was engaged. 14,000 feet descended between six and eight minutes at a consistent speed at a consistent pitch. Thats what david was talking about. Unless that six to eight minutes that it was going down in that descent, no contact from the pilots to Ground Control to say, hey, somethings wrong there. Six to eight minutes seems fobl ss possibly like a long enough time to Say Something if you thought there was a problem. This is the disturbing part ofscenario that it seemed if indeed they were in a controlled descent, believe me that is a fair amount of time to descend. Its not an unusual rate of descent. Its a descent that indicates some sort of problem to me on board and they were attempting to rectify it through check lists. But the fact that theyre in a very sophisticated area of radar control. Ive flown out of barcelona. Youre constantly talking to air Traffic Control. The fact they didnt even have a chance to get out one mayday signal, if indeed thats correct because we dont have all the data from air Traffic Control at this point in time as far as the transitions between atc and the pilots, but i would like to know what was happening between the time in the last contact and what the voice of the crew who was talking on the radio. But it all seems to me this aircraft was under control from the pilots standpoint or from the autopilot. David, youve had a chance to look at the debris field, that debris, very small pieces strewn about a fouracre area, one investigator said the plane was completely obliterated. Have you been able to make any judgments based on what youve seen either by the size of the pieces or the wreckage that you could spot . Well, it looks like there was two scatter points we call them scatter points because thats the point at which it hits the ground and the airplane breaks up. It appears to be two scatter points which suggests no inflight breakup or structure before it hit the ground. But it hit one ridge probably separated into two pieces at that point. But it happened so incredibly fast that no one on board would have been cognizant of what was happening at all. It just would have happened incredibly abruptly fasts, a matter of tenths of seconds, from the time it hit first and the second part. Remember, this is a pressurized aircraft, basically a solid cell or capsule. So when it does hit the ground, it literally explodes and comes back upon itself. Anything thats in the front comes back upon itself. And that creates collisions with deagree coming back away from the dirt, away from the ground and the debris still continuing to come forward. So thats why its so dramatic and why theres so many small pieces. I hate to be so graphic because i know theres families watching that probably dont want to hear this, but in my experience in the past families are appreciative of being able to hear or at least understand what the Family Member may have been going through. But the difficult part now is walking this scene and actually seeing the devastation thats in front of you. Its something that ill certainly never forget. Les, the white house put out a statement very early today saying that they did not think there was any kind of obvious terror link. How can they be so sure so fast . And does that rule out the possibility of a pilot doing something, a pilot suicide . We have seen that before. Im not saying it is, but how do you rule it out so quickly . Listen we cant rule out anything, just from the limited data we have with reference to altitude, rate of descent, the speed the change in speed, it just seems to me that it wasnt a terrorist event. Theres nothing that seems to have indicated that situation. I would believe the white house probably would have done a Little Research prior to making that statement with reference to the passengers that were on board. Barcelona is a very secure airport not saying that systems arent flawed but i really dont see this as a terrorist event event. I see it as something catastrophic happened in the cockpit that the crew members got distracted with but while potentially trying to handle the emergency it conflicted with the terrain, to use terminology. David les, thanks so much. Your expertise so key in helping understand whats going on. Were now learning more about who was on that doomed flight. The passenger list included two babies and 16 students and two teachers from one high school in germany. Cnns frederick is live with the sad news. Reporter absolutely. Its an absolutely sad scene here at the introducedusseldorf airport. The Crisis Center was established shortly after this happened. We have learned in the meantime that at least 67 german nationals were on board the plane. Also a lot of people from spaenin as well. Its the tragedy within the tragedy, of course as you said at least two babies on that plane as well as 16 High School Students from a town only about an hour and a half from where i am right now. Certainly right now here in germany, this is a country in mourning, also a country that quite frankly is almost confused, if you will because it prides itself on high technology, it prides itself on the safety of things like its airline. This is certainly a big blow. But the strictvictims right now are at the forefront right now. Lets look at how its unfolding. Devastate Family Members are gathering at dusseldorf airport where the doomed flight was headed. And also at barcelona airport where the flight originated. A Crisis Center has been set up with a team of psychologists for those who need care. Rely tills, many crying were escorted by police and airport staff as they made their way to the airports. Officials believe there were no survivors after the airbus a320 crashed tuesday in the foothills of the french alps. Translator on board, there were 144 passengers including 2 babies on board as well as 6 crew members, 2 in the cockpit and 4 in the cabin. Reporter 16 students and 2 teachers from a high school in northwest germany are wrong the dead. The students had spent a week at Exchange Students in spain and were returning when the flight crashed. Translator the whole city is shocked and we can feel it everywhere. This is the worst what happened. Reporter the students are among the 67 germans the airline believes were on the flight. German chancellor Angela Merkel is expected to travel to the crash site on wednesday. Officials in spain said 45 passengers had spanish names. Translator there are no known survivors. Theres a high number of spaniards germans and turks. Reporter a highlevel official briefed on the situation said human remains are strewn for several hundred meters. Authorities say it could take days to recover the bodies because the mountainous terrain and weather are making it difficult. Translator we express our deepest aim estest sympathy. We think about the victims at this moment. At the same time we will do as much as possible with the authorities to find out the reason for this crash. Reporter and so the grieving of the relatives, of course continues, and we have of course heard, john that the airline wants to make it possible for everyone who lost a loved one in this horrible tragedy today to be able to get to the vicinity of where this crash happened. First this hour in our politics lead, republican senator ted cruz who was just one out of the gate to announce his campaign for president yesterday now in a notablee ableable twist of fate is telling dana bash he may end up benefitting from that thing he despises so much obamacare. Dana is with us. Lets listen to what he had to say. You and your family have been getting your Health Insurance through your wifes job, her company has been Goldman Sachs. She has now left to help you with your campaign. So why are you getting your Health Insurance now . Shes taking an unpaid leave of absence from her job so were transitioning. Well be getting new Health Insurance and well presumably do it through my job in the senate, so well be on the federal exchange. You will be on the obamacare. Its one of the good things about obamacare, that members of congress would be on obamacare without subsidies. In wouldnt be a double standard. Senator, right now the irony is kind of unbelievable that you have made your name fighting obamacare and now you are going to sign up to get your insurance through that very process, obamacare. Listen, it was the case before obamacare, that federal employees could get Health Insurance through their jobs. Thats not a new development. So yes, ill get my insurance through my job, like millions of other americans. Thats not a will you take a subsidy from your job, which is the federal government . We will follow the text of the law. I strongly oppose the exemption that president obama illegally put in place for members of congress becausoreor harry reid and the Senate Democrats didnt want to be under the same rules as the american people. That means you are going to take a government subsidy . I believe we should follow the text of the law. The law that you want to repeal. Yes. I believe we should follow the text of every law, even laws i disagree with. You know look, it is interesting, dana. A whole bunch of other republican senators and congressmen voting against obamacare now getting their coverage there, on the question of a subsidy, did you get an answer . I did get a text saying he will not take a subsidy. They argue inside the cruz camp that that puts him in line to your point with many many other republican senators who have opposed obamacare but are still enrolled in obamacare because it is the law of the land pushing back pretty hard on the idea that this is news because it is the law of the land. But of course, until now cruz has been able to kind of shield himself because he hasnt been involved in it at all on a personal level because hes had his wifes Health Insurance, which is why i asked the question. Right. A question good. They lost the Goldman SachsHealth Insurance. Now he hes taking the government plan. He is a government worker. Who other options would he have though . I suppose he could not have Health Insurance or go out and get it privately essentially. Thats exactly right. I thought maybe he was going to answer my question by saying they would do cobra, which a lot of people who lose their jobs and leave their jobs and have Health Insurance through their companies can extend that for a fee. But he didnt say that. Certainly they could, like any american, go out and go not through the exchange but just go buy private Health Insurance. Again, as i was texting back and forth with somebody from his campaign, the answer was they believe that the private insurance system mechanism, is obliterated in their words, because of obamacare, so it is harder for him to go around the system. Thats their answer. But is it possible . Yes. Would it dostcost more . We dont have the fillings sfigure but it likely would cover more. You cover a lot of candidates. Do you think this will be an issue . Very likely there are other senators on obamacare. Thats what his campaign is arguing, that he shouldnt be held to a different standard because there are a lot of republicans frankly, most if not all republicans at this point, who are in congress and running for president arguing that they want to repeal obamacare, and many if not most of them are a part of it. The difference here is number one, ted cruz has made his name has become a public figure on repealing obamacare. He announced for president on the fiveyear anniversary of obamacare. As i said until now hes been able to kind of shield himself because hes had his wifes insurance. Thats no longer the case. He is the most one of the most 0ardent opponents and it is at least notable he will now be part of the obamacare system. Thanks, dana. Making matters worse, senior obama officials complained to the wall street journal that israel is spying on the Iranian Nuclear talks and leaking details to congress. A very personal revelation from one of the biggest names in hollywood all in the effort to save herself from cancer that haunts her family. Angelina jolie shared that she had her ovaries and fa lopian tubes removed, almost fwo years after she had a double mastectomy. She wrote, i went through what i imagine thousands of other women have felt. I told myself to stay calm to be strong and that i had no reason to think i wouldnt live to see my children grow up and to meet my grandchildren. Lets bring in dr. Sanjay gupta. Angelina lost Family Members to cancer. What did she see, just the Family History that led her to make this decision . I think the Family History obviously was the most concerning and also just the young age. You know her mother was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer at age 49, and died 7 years later. So its a very strong Family History. I think thats what fromted the Genetic Screening a few years ago. Theres testing for the genetic mutations. If someone has mutations in these particular genes they have increased likelihood of developing cancer. Thats why she had the breasts removed a couple of years ago and also why she had this done her ovaries and fa lopian tubes removed. Explain to me the mutation and how much it increases the risk for cancer. Its the mutation of the brak ka 1 gene, right . Theres Breast Cancer one and Breast Cancer two. Heres how to think about it. If these genes are working properly, theyre going to help fight cancer if theyre not working properly you dont have those same cancer fighting cells or not as many of them. For example, if the average risk for a woman to develop Breast Cancer is about 10 , if you have mutations of these genes, the risk goes up to 55 to 65 . For Ovarian Cancer about a percent nafr. And a half. You go up as high as 40 . Its a significant increase its not 100 . Its not saying for sure youll develop cancer. But it does say your risk increases. The surgery she has elected to have both two years ago and very recently are dramatic decisions, serious procedures. Do doctors recommend this for people in similar situations to Angelina Jolie . It is such a personal decision. I read her oped carefully both from a couple of years ago and now from today. She said, look this is my decision. This was a personal decision. She was very she took pains to say not everyone should make the same decision. Some women will say, okay i now know my risk for Breast Cancer is increased. The way im going to handle that is im going to get more frequent screenings. If theres a cancer ill find it early. Other people will say, i dont want to take any chance whatsoever so ill go ahead and have the prophylactic operation. So its an incredibly personal, maybe one of the most personal decisions in medicine. Personal decision, but when Angelina Jolie does it it has public impact. Doctor, thank you.
