Be viewed as an escalation of the u. S. Involvement in the conflict now tearing apart iraq. American drones are flying over baghdad, but not the observe and report kind. The kind that can kill. Iraqis have repeatedly asked the u. S. To carry out air strikes on the terrorist militia called the Islamic State in iraq and syria, or isis which has rapidly seized huge sections of iraq through a campaign of blood. But air strikes are not the u. S. Mission there yet. American drones armed with hell fire missiles are now patrolling the skies over baghdad. But they will not go after isis targets. Flying instead to provide protection for 180 u. S. Military advisors deployed to iraq. Frustrated by the lack of american air support, iraq has now turned to russia, buying second hand russian fighter jets. Just the latest in a spring of american adversaries from syria to iran now aiding iraq. Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri Al Maliki slammed the u. S. In an interview with the bbc saying iraq could have repelled isis advances if the u. S. Had delivered f16s first ordered three years ago. Translator if we had air cover, we could have prevented what has happened in this country. Those f16s say u. S. Officials are just weeks away. Though maliki has also asked for air strikes on isis by american war planes. Syrian jets are already carrying out strikes on isis targets. These are some of isis work. Two mass graves believed to contain bodies of iraqi soldiers, police and civilians, murdered in saddam husseins hometown of tikrit. A new report by Human Rights Watch analyzed isis photos and concluded the militants executed three groups of men numbering in the hundreds. Though the group claims a death toll even higher. While the u. S. Deliberates military action in iraq, today john kerry met with the president of the opposition in syria. Following a white house decision to seek 500 million, train and equip the moderate syrian rebels. In light of what has happened in iraq, we have even more to talking about in terms of the moderate opposition in syria. Which has the ability to be a very important player in pushing back against isils presence. Some critics have said at least part of isis strength in iraq can be blamed on Obama Administrations failure to act in neighboring syria. Joining me is Pentagon Press secretary rear admiral john kirby. Thanks so much for joining us today. Always good to have you on. Thank you. We have seen a gradual growth of u. S. Presence. You now have 200 military advisors some of them possibly outside the wire of the u. S. Embassy. No air strikes but now you have armed drones flying over iraq. The stated mission is to protect the u. S. Personal personnel on the ground. If isis threatens baghdad or other critical locations in iraq, could these drones be used to attack isis forces in that scenario . Well, thats not the goal right now. You said it right, jim. The reason we have some armed aircraft over iraq and its not all unmanned, some of the manned aircraft we have flying Reconnaissance Missions over iraq are armed, as well. But the main purpose of that is to force Protection Mission now that weve introduced additional advisors onto the ground who will be venturing outside the embassy confines there in baghdad. It just makes sense. It would be imprudent not to do that. I also would say in addition to that, we have a job. We have a job to be prepared and to plan for all options. The president has made it clear that air strikes remain an option that he may want to entertain in the future. We have to make sure we are ready to do that, as well. So youre saying if necessity arises for them to attack something, they are prepared to use military force from the air if necessary . Were certainly prepared, you know, if the commander in chief decides that he wants to ep employ air strikes, our job is to it be ready as soon as possible. To be clear, is it just unmanned drones now armed or also manned flights armed over iraq . No, there are some manned aircraft that are flying in support of Reconnaissance Missions in iraq that are armed. Its not just Unmanned Systems flying that are armed. So let me ask you this because the president has said, secretary kerry when i was traveling with him in iraq this week have said i was is not just a threat to iraq, its a region is threat and in fact, a threat to the u. S. Because you have terrorists there training possibly returning home to carry out attacks. If isis is a threat to the u. S. , why isnt the u. S. Prepared more prepared to take military action against isis to alleviate, to counter that threat . Well, i think we are very prepared. As you know, in the last few weeks weve intensified isr support over iraq. We have more than 30,000 troops in the middle east as a matter, of course. Were very prepared should the president decide that he wants to take action through air strikes or other kinetic action against isil. Will clear theyrely theyre a regional threat and to our own national security. The goal right now is to the provide some assessments, give us more information about the Iraqi Security forces, more information about isil and frankly, more information about how an advice and assistition can go forward. Where would we do it, are so right now were trying to get information more than anything. During that information gathering phase, intelligence gathers, you have add ser sears of the u. S. Moving inning to fill that void. You have iran flying Drone Missions and sending supplies to iraq. You have syria carrying out air strikes and now you have iraq buying used russian warplanes are you concerned that by letting this happen that the u. S. Is in effect eb pushing iraq closer to our adversaries our competitors for influence in the region. Its not about us letting iraq do anything at this point. Were there at the iraqis request and trying to provide broad based Information Support right now. What our message has been to all of iraqs neighbors whether on the bodder or not is nobody should do anything thats going to exacerbate the sectarian tensions that are already there. I would say to some of those nations that you mentioned, i mean, their involvement is not necessarily helping calm sectarian tensions. Thats the real problem. Let me ask, you say youre there in the service of the iraqis. s weve been aware, Prime Minister maliki has asked the u. S. For air strikes. An interview with the bbc, he said that had the u. S. Sent the f16s that were ordered by iraq three years ago earlier, the Iraqi Military would have air power that would have helped slow isiss as advance. It is iraq now saying u. S. Support has been slow in coming it hasnt been to be honest with you. Theres f16s. The first two the werent supposed to be delivered till the fall. We were in the process of working towards that delivery. In fact, those contractors that were at balad airfield that had to be evacuated because of isil advances were setting up the logistical base for us to begin to deliver those. They were never going to get there till the philly anyway. If one just looks at the progress that isil has made, it couldnt have been stemmed through the use of two particular fighter planes. Let me if i can take a turn to ukraine, another crisis zone for the administration. The Obama Administration has said repeatedly that unless russia deescalates in Eastern Ukraine, that there will be higher costs to pay, and in fact, in the last couple weeks weve seen things that seemed to amount to an escalation have you russian weapons being used to shoot down Ukrainian Military transport planes, you have russian thanks being sent to prorussian separatists inside ukraine. Has the pentagon seen any sign of russian deescalation which the administration has set for additional sanctions . Have you seen any deescalation . Nothing of any import, no, jim. They did move quite a bit of their troops off the boarder with Eastern Ukraine and added some more towards more of that southeast kind of border. So theyre still there still threatening the Activity Still destabilizing, still supporting these separatist groups in ukraine. From a military perspective, no, weve seen no major muscle movements by russia to deescalate the tension. Thanks very much, rear admiral john kirby. My pleasure, thanks. The national lead, its no secret that bullying has long since gone digital, facebook, test messages twitter are all conduits for would be online tormentors. But what happens when the most hurtful kids say to each other suddenly disappear . Mobile apps like snapchat and sites like ask fm have come under scrutiny for allegedly contributing to the suicide of some teens. But ask fms founders tell Time Magazine theyre the ones being bullied by the media. As Sarah Gangnam shows us, when the hateful messages evaporate into cyberpolice, the reality of parents trying to piece together what happened without any trace gets more complicated. Tricia norman thought she was being a consciencious mom, keeping tabs on her daughters social media accounts. She found monitoring Online Communications was getting harder with things constantly changing. The recent trend, lets call them disappearing apps where messages can easilily disappear raising alarm about using to hide sexting or other inappropriate posts. Its not just parents. Theyre a problem for Law Enforcement too especially when something goes terribly wrong. She had just started sixth grade. Rebecca sedwick was 12 years old. She was a good student but school was a challenge. Her mother says she was bullied relentlessly. Her mom closed her facebook account and pulled her out of school but didnt know about hess messaging apps. The last time she saw her daughter, rebecca was on her cell phone. To me she will always be part of this family. I try to include her in everything. Later that night, rebecca killed herself. When you stand at the base of a cement silo and see a 12yearold chide crumbled on the ground from where she jumped to her death, it changes your life forever. And when find out bullying is behind it it, that frustrates you. The pote can county Sheriff Grady Judd said apps may have contributed to her anguish. One is ask fm started latvia. Its website boasts more than 100 million users worldwide. When news of her death went viral, it says the company deleted her page making it impossible for Law Enforcement to see what was said the night she died. They deleted everything, her whole entire page. To this day, you dont know what was said to her . I have idea what was said to her. In just over a year, there have been more than a dozen news reports around the world linking suicides to bullying onsk fm. All of them were teenagers. Theyre saying we dont care if youre victimized. We dont care if your child is victimized. The company says they cooperate with Law Enforcement and recently added a safety page to its website saying bullies are not tolerated. In a statement ask fm said reports of suicide cases often tend to present premature and simplified conclusions about tragic events which are always a complex overlap of different factors. Suicide is complicated and that includes the circumstances of rebeccas death plus without the original records fromsk fm, no one can say exactly why she took her own life. Its not just bullies. Hard to trace apps draw call kinds of criminal activity. There are apps emerging every day. If it whats stored, it doesnt matter the judicial process, youre not going to get it. Shaun was the executive director of the fbi. Theres a term we call going dark. Law enforcement is losing the authorized visibility into many sites because theyre not regulated to maintain data and Law Enforcement is using the ability to lawfully correct information. If we had to depend on the app owners for our criminal investigations, there would be no criminal investigations. Judd did charge two teens accusing them of contributing to rebeccas death but the charges were later dropped by the state attorney for lack of evidence. Instead they went to canning. Rebeccas mother and sheriff are now trying to warn parents about the secret world of these messaging apps. To me, i know she was bullied. I know it was horrific but that morning is just is what pushed her over the edge. Heart breaking for parents, thats Sarah Gangnam. Coming up next, if your weekend plans includes a backyard beer or two, that could make you a heavy drinker. Fraternity guys with beer bongs, maybe actor shya la beautiful getting dragged out of a theater by security. Maybe you ought to look in the mirror. The cdcs definition of how much is considered to be a heavy drinker is probably much lower than you thought. If youre at a backyard get together this weekend look around at everyone. This new report claims a shockingly high number of them will die from the very thing youre alsiping and could you or i be one of them . I want to bring in chief medical correspondent dr. Sanjay gupta. Sanjay, you look at these numbers from this report. I think to all of us, its a surprisingly low number thats required to get over that threshold to be a heavy drinker. Explain how they came to that. I think a lot of people are looking in the mirror and saying is that me. This is an interesting study. Ill give you numbers in a second. What they found over a fouryear period if they looked at the various reasons people die, about 88,000 people die a year from excessive drinking. If you do the math, thats one out of every ten deaths in the United States somehow related to excessive drinking. That is was sort of the headline there. Most of them incident lit are men. What they tried to figure out to your point is what is excessive drinking exactly . What theyre categorizing it differently for men and women. But on average, they say men who are drinking 15 drinks a week or more, thats considered heavy or excessive drinking. And for a woman, you can see eight drinks or more a week is considered excessive drinking. Thats where that low bar youre referring to sort of came from. People look at those numbers and say could that be me. Its interesting because when you do the math on that, say three or four nights a week, particularly if youre a woman, you had a couple glasses of wine three or four nights a week, that doesnt sound like to me or you or to friends that that would be over the top. Are they saying this is true for all people in that category or just trying to make the group as wide as possible, you know, for the sake of being safe . Yeah, thats a very good point. First of all, these are rough numbers. Theyre sort of the bottom of the numbers. Drinking at least this much eight drinks or more could potentially lead to some of these problems. 15 drinks or more for men a week could lead to some of these problems. Bing drinking seems to be particularly problematic. Women who drink four or more drinks at a time particularly at risk. We also say as doctors a certain amount of alcohol is fine. Well typically say one to two drinks for men. If you do the math, thats 14 drinks a week we say is fine, but 15 drinks is excessive. Its not an exact science by any means. There does appear to be a tipping point. Up to a certain point its okay and even good for you. Beyond that, you can have serious problems. When you mentioned binge drink diagnose makes you think of teenagers and college kids doing this with some regularity. Jim, maybe youd be surprised but theres a lot of adults doing that, as well. Thats particularly had he problematic. You know, we find that the different types of deaths were talking about here not just alcohol poisoning, car crashes or violent behavior but also its a risk factor for certain cancers like breast and liver cancer, even some forms of cardiovascular disease. You can see how the numbers can get so high when you start looking at them like that. Moderation, thanks very much. Dont let it spoil your weekend. You spoiled my weekend and probably a lot of other weeks, too. Dont miss dr. Whats your policy . Welcome back. And now the politics lead. His poll numbers are in the basement. Chaos is erupting in the middle east and the gridlock on capitol hill right now makes manhattan rush hour look like a walk in the park. The white house is facing attacks on all fronts. As president obamas second term wanes on, his critics are already dubbing him a lake duck. Today more than five years into his presidency, the commander in chief is back on the trail trying to get himself associated with a completely different kind of power animal. Chief White House Correspondent jim acosta joins us now. Jim, theres the yogi bear, smoky bear, even the care bears but obama the bear . Thats right, jim. We should point out the national zoo is actually a few miles up the road. There is a selfdescribed bear in captivity here at the white house thats feeling the urge to break out of his cage. Lost in the political wilderness for months im finding lately that i just want to say whats on my mind. So let me cant be routine. Its fair to say president obama is doing more than working through some cabin fever these days. The bear is loose. Now these president ial bear sightings happen every week. But this creature of washington is hungering for more than coffee runs and fast food. As he told a town hall in minnesota. Im like a caged bear and every once in an awhile i break loose. Oh, my god, its a bear. Unlike the actual bear that tried to escape to the minnesota woods, mr. Obama wants to reconnect with the voters outside the white house fence and beyond the beltway noise. Critics cynics in washington, theyve written me off more times than i can count. Now the is make issing these getaways part of his schedule having the president spend for time with kefrd americans. This week, it was rebecca erlers turn. She wrote a letter to the president about her struggles making ends meet. I got a chance to start a conversation about what a lot of the people i know are going through. With the president s poll numbers approaching record lows, after bearish stories from obamacare to the v. A. , democratic strategists say the looser the better. Oh, its an election year. So theres no question that the president will visit not just those important states but those not so important districts. So im sure that theres a little bit of politics in all of this. No surprise with the Midterm Election bat with republicans under way, is the claws are coming out. They dont do anything except block me. And call me names. The president prefers the bear, and aides say hes out to convince americans that washington can be more than the circus where hes not the popular exhibit he once was. I dont want you to ever forget that and i dont want you to be cynical. Cynicism is popular these days, but hopes better. And we should point out that president obama is not the first occupant of the white house to see this place as a cage. Harry truman once referred to the white house as a glamorous prison. Dont be caught off guard, white house aides say if the president is back on the road breaking loose from the fences. Hes going to getting in touch with other americans about their issues later on this summer. That feels like the campaign trail again. A want to bring in our political panel, politics editor for roll call schirra center and Washington Bureau chief for Time Magazine michael she recall ra. Thank you for joining us. So does he have a chance . Its two and a half years into a difficult time. Hes got Foreign Policy kreiss and uncooperative congress. Can he sell this bear nickname, or is he more likely to keep the lame duck albatross around his neck . I think the next six months will be centered on the Midterm Elections. So nothings going to get done in congress. Roll call are in town for maybe a few days before august recess. Theres not much of an opportunity to do much anyway. In terms of his personal life, we see him going around the country going to diners, hes doing the sameninging in d. C. Hes stopping at every fast casual restaurant on connecticut avenue. He looks happier. He does. After this six months, will this get him credibility or public support he can leverage into getting stuff done . Barring some big upset in the coming election, hell have a worse congress than he does now. Hes sort of a lame duck bres dressing up like a bear right now. They need a story line. Theyre going to do fundraisers around the country. Theres no legislation morning. Its a fun story line. He says ive done my last campaign but heres the next campaign to be a regular campaign. Youve told us weve swallowed the white house story line. No, we tell the white house story line. Its part of our job. I want to turn to a more difficult race and political issue. This is the mississippi race, one of the ugliest of the primary season just took a tragic turn. A Mississippi Tea Party leader accused being one of the men behind a photograph taken of thad cochranes wife in a nursing home, just committed suicide. Tea Party Challenger Chris Mcdaniel who lost that race posted on his facebook page, regardless of recent allegations made against his character, Mark Mayfield was a fine cristian man always respectful and kind, one of the most polite and humble men ive ever met. Mcdaniels still threatening a legal challenge. Listen to what he had to say. 35,000 to 40,000 democrats jumped in this race and apparently tried to decide it. They have their own primary. We have ours. What were looking for now is irregularities. Weve found hundreds and were going to keep looking shira, have we not seen the last of this ugly races . Maybe in terms of mcdaniel talking about it. He doesnt need 100. He needs to find 7,000. Hes wasting a lot of his own political capital. When you drag a race on like this, you ruin any chances of perhaps running for senate again. Thad cochrane is not going to be a u. S. Senator forever and ever and mcdaniel is a young guy. Did we learn anythinging fromming this race . Is there a lasting victory, michael, you had the Republican Party grant reaching out to africanamericans . Senator cochrane had reached out to them, built relationships before. Is there something to bid on here or was this is purely politics on his part. The chamber of commerce would say yes, and very proud of his victory. Theres a lot of people waiting in the establishment over something that he can wave the flag over. And this was a case in which you had an old school politician appointiator, someone who is made his name taking federal deficit dollars and sending it to mississippi with some democratic help which was for the most part legal. Mcdaniel is complaining about democrats crossing over. As long as you intend to vote in the general election for the person you voted for in the primaries, perfectly legal for democratic crossovers. Its been interesting for us because mcdaniels have been using dana bashs reports as evidence that africanamerican democrats wrongly took part in this election. She interviewed africanamerican voter whos voted for cochrane why they did. You know, is there wrong with that . Legally no. Not at all. Under mississippi law, its an open primary as michael just said. I think the National Party is going to very quickly if they havent become already become very frustrated with Chris Mcdaniel essentially saying mostly africanamerican voters cannot vote in the american primary. Thats a hard thing for a party trying to expand its diversity reach right now. Going back to the president before we finish up, you have john boehner still threatening this lawsuit against the president michael. Chances . Of him actually filing a lawsuit . Whats the point really. Its really hard to get one of these lawsuits to come to a conclusion. The courts like giving standing to congress. We dont know what the lawsuit is though. Its possible he finds some technicality. Its clear to the court in the recess appointment case hes willing to take up some of these issues. Its not clear at all that hes going to be able to. Stories we think arent getting enough attention. Weve been reporting on the thousands of undocumented children being sent by their Central American families to cross the border into the u. S. Alone. Now, president obama is sending their parents this message. Oh, our message absolutely is dont send your children unaccompanied on trains or through a bunch of smugglers. That is our direct message to the families in central america. Do not send your children to the borders. If they do make it, theyll get sent back. More importantly, they may not make it. Now, the uncertain future of these children highlights the complications and difficulties of americas immigration policies. And a new cl nn film called documented explores it through the journey of a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas who outed himself in a 2011 essay. Since then hes been talking to others about what he calls americas broken immigration system. I was brought here when i was 12. I didnt know it. My grandparents were american citizens didnt tell me. So ive been here. Ive been paying taxes since i was 18. I just want to be able as you said to get legal and get in the back ive line somewhere. Jose Antonio Vargas joins us now from new york. Thanks so much for coming on. We appreciate it. Thank you so much for having me. I just want to begin with a basic question. Youre sitting here talking to us now. You outed yourself as an undowned worker three years ago. Yet, youre still in the u. S. And havent been sent back to the philippines, your home country. How is that still possible today . I have no idea. I have no idea why i havent gotten deported. Actually i called the government myself. I called i. C. E. And asked them are you going to deport me, why and why not . Why havent i heard from you . Just the fact that every day, undowned immigrants like me are getting detained at the border. Here i am talking to you and just made a film about to air sunday night. Its incredible. Were done hiding. And i think the question thats important are you playing a clip of the film . Thats just onside. On that thought, i wanted to ask you this. You heard the president s comments. Yes . Na abc interview saying do not send your children here alone. You were a child who was sent here on your own to live with your grandparents. I was sent with a smuggler. I didnt know. And then i found out four years later it was a smuggler. Yes. What did you think when you heard the president s warning . We have a political crisis in washington, d. C. Right . This is so bad that the republicans, House Republicans say that we cant get immigration reform. No, because they dont trust the president to enforce the law. And this is the same president who has deported nearly 2 Million People in five years. President obama is enforcing the law but thats kind of the political stand still we find ourselves in. I think whats happening, this humanitarian crisis with unaccompanied minors is reminding us the crisis is happening with 11 million of us who are here illegally who go to school and contribute and pay Social Security andtachs here. And yet, this level of urgency is not something that we see. This is what i asked in the film and what im asking every elected official in washington, d. C. What do you want to do with me exactly . Its a bake question still. What do you want to do with all of us . We cant all babysit your kids and mow your lawns and serve your drinks or is that what you want us to do . Listen, theres a moment in the film that documents you losing your only government issued i. D. , your drivers license after coming out as undocumented. The Philippine Embassy gives you a passport with no visa. You try boarding a plane. Lets look at this for a moment as to how you managed to do that. Catch you. How did the system fail to not catch you in that moment . I have no idea. All i know is since i was a kid, you know, because i dont look like, quote unquote, an illegal because i dont look when people think undocumented are illegal, they think latino and mexican and brown as if theres something wrong with being mexican. All these years ive been able to pass. And for me, its a matter of kind of using this privilege that i have to make sure that were really asking the hard, tough questions. And that we insist on a conversation. As far as im concerned, im an american. Im just waiting for my own country to recognize it. Youre right. Hard questions still yet to be answered. Thanks very much to Jose Antonio Vargas. Remember you can watch the cnn film documented this sunday at p. M. When we come back today, one company has decided to introduce a whole new dimension. You might want to be forewarned. You might be dodging some bullets that arent actually coming for you. With 4 d, its not just about watching the action. Its about feeling it. I usually go to sleep in the movies. Gosh, not that one. As movies face ever increasing competition to snag eyeballs, one company is betting it can lure people into theaters with the fourth dimension. When theres exciting moments, the 4 d gets going and you know, the adrenaline is rushing. Only time will tell if moviegoers will be rushing back for more. And there are many of these theaters around the world. Its been hardest to get into the u. S. But theyre hoping theyre productive with them. A lot of us have seen these kind of an 3450usment ridesed at theme parks. Its different when each movie is programmed for the technology. Have they been testing this out .
