"the lead" with jake tapper is now. >> cheer up, england. we eventually game friends again. >> and in egypt, what comes next now that the president has been overthrown and members of the form are rule be party are being rounded up? the money lead, what's the 4th of july without the rocket's red glare? no fireworks for many of our families on bases across the country because our leaders in washington could not get their act to the. and in national news, limits on high capacity magazines. would any of that have stopped newtown, aurora or tucson, where gabby giffords of shot? i'll ask the couple as they begin the push for what they call gun responsibility. >> happy independence day for all of you. thanks for spending part of your holiday with us. we'll begin with our world lead, the fallout in egypt, a coup for a key u.s. ally. someday egypt might celebrate july 3rd. a little more than 24 hours after egypt military removed mohamed morsi from power. he is under arrest and still is refusing to step down voluntarily. and he's rejecting an offer to leave egypt from qatar or yemen. members of his group are being rounded up and arrested, including the group's supreme leader. egypt's constitution has been suspended until a new one can be written. on the short lives to eventually take over permanently is opposition leader and former head of the united nations nuclear leader. he spoke today with our own becky anderson. while he would not call it a coup, he said that egypt has reached a tipping point. >> it was a very painful decision to make. either to continue and risk a civil war situation or take exceptional measures for the uprising of 2011. >> i want to bring in senior international correspondent ivan watson. thanks for being here. within of the big questions is where exactly is the now former president mohamed morsi? what have you been able to find out? >> that's a good question. a lot of people are asking that. that's what i asked his spokesman for the muslim brotherhood in the north of cairo at a huge camp-out, a protest sit-in being conducted by muslim brotherhood there and surrounded by a ring of steel of egyptian military armored per n personnel carriers and soldiers surrounding that area. listen to an excerpt i had with this muslim brotherhood spokesman. what is the situation now of mohamed morsi himself? do you know where he is and what condition he's in? >> we have not spoke with him, there are no direct communications with him. as far as we know, he was detained at the presidential palace and then taken to the presidential headquarters and then afterwards, last night, about 5:00 a.m., he was moved to the ministry of defense and separated from his presidential team. >> so, jake, that's the latest we've gotten on mohamed morsi. dozens of his aides and fellow brotherhood top officials are in detention and facing travel bands, including the father of the man i was talking to right there. >> at least 32 people were killed yesterday. what are the brotherhood planning? are they going to be peaceful? are they going to resist? >> they say they are going to resist, they are going to fight by legal means but only use force in attracted. the muslim brotherhood is calling for what they're c describing as legitimacy marches. the fireworks are still going off in central tahrir square. not for american independence day but people continuing to celebrate the toppling of mohamed morsi. the crowds weren't as busy as last night but they're pretty huge. thursday is the beginning of the egyptian weekend so that may be contributing to the euphoria here. and a straight sight throughout the day today. egyptian air force jets flying in formation over the egyptian capital making a sign of a heart with their vapor trails and carrying the colors of the egyptian flag, this patriotic display by the egyptian military. i was seeing some of these soldiers on the ground, many egyptians coming up to take souvenir photos and waving victory signs with them and it shows you house polarized the country is right now. >> the white house measured its response to the egyptian fluid situation, as president obama puts it. they were not the best of friends but the u.s. did continue to send a substantial amount of aid to egypt during the morsi regime. for those reasons and more, the without is treading very carefully. as the protesters roared in tahrir square in egypt, president obama and his top national security advisers were hunkered down in the situation room of the white house, trying to game out an incredibly volatile and complicated situation. the vanilla statements coming from the state department podium notwithstanding. >> we are monitoring it very closely and continue to believe that of course the egyptian people deserve a peaceful political solution to the current crisis. >> reporter: hours after mohamed morsi was removed from power by the military, president obama released a carefully worded statement. what he did not say might have mattered most. he avoided using the word "coup." he didn't call on the egyptian military to restore power to "the" democratically elected civilian government but rather "a" democratically elected civilian government. >> they are new government that are trying to find its way. >> reporter: the president has yet to appear before the cameras or comment publicly. but back in september the president highlighted the rocky relationship with the morsi government in an interview with telemundo. >> i don't think we would consider them an ally but we don't consider them an enemy. >> reporter: the thinking of the president now is that while the president is not explicitly supporting the removal of morsi from power, they hope they can push the military in a new direction. if they had called it a coup, they may be required to stop u.s. aid. >> if this were to be seen as a coup, it would limit our ability to have the kind of relationship we think we need with the egyptian armed forces. >> reporter: currently the u.s. gives $1.5 billion to egypt annually, mostly in military aid. in his statement the president said he conducted a review of u.s. law regarding the aid to egypt. >> a coup by any other name is a coup. >> so while what happens in egypt fits the military definition of a coup, don't expect to hear that four-letter word from president obama. or at least not yet. >> all this hedging by the obama administration may not matter much ultimately to the anti-morsi crowds in the street. they viewed the relationship between the house and morsi's government as too cozy, which is why anti-america and anti-obama signs popped up at protests over there. he is, as far as we know, spending america's birthday in moscow' airport but edward snowden may not be there much longer. it's been confirmed iceland's parliament has agreed to grant snowden asylum there. the u.s. has warned countries about taking in the indicted nsa leaker. just today france and italy turned him down. remember anna chatman, the former russian spy and maxim russian model deported to russia in a prisoner swap? well, she's found a way back into the headline. we're glad to welcome her back by tweeting a marriage proposal to snowden. careful, anna. didn't you hear how he left his last girl friend? coming up on "the lead," president obama and the rest of the capital get ready for a spectacular fireworks display tonight. >> and the prosecution suggests that george zimmerman's leading training gave him an idea of what toy a to detectives the night of trayvon martin's death. i'm the next american success story. working for a company where over seventy-five percent of store management started as hourly associates. there's opportunity here. i can use walmart's education benefits to get a degree, maybe work in it, or be an engineer, helping walmart conserve energy. even today, when our store does well, i earn quarterly bonuses. when people look at me, i hope they see someone working their way up. vo: opportunity, that's the real walmart. the healthcare law gives us powerful tools to fight it... to investigate it... ...prosecute it... and stop criminals. our senior medicare patrol volunteers... are teaching seniors across the country... ...to stop, spot, and report fraud. you can help. guard your medicare card. don't give out your card number over the phone. call to report any suspected fraud. we're cracking down on medicare fraud. let's make medicare stronger for all of us. we have that much red tape? >> you as an individual can't make a donation with strings attached and tell the government how to spend that money. only congress can do that. >> reporter: instead, nearby communities have stepped up to the plate to throw modified celebrations off base. corporate and private donation have ensured this 4th of july will boast games, music and food for our armed forces, only if fireworks are furloughed. >> the only thing they supply are es are aesthetics. >> two of the winning submissions, one is where hurricane sandy was hit and they won a fireworks show and fayetteville, north carolina, where ft. bragg is out of 3,500 submissions. someone from tennessee entered this contest three times for his town and he says after reading the other entries, i am very thankful that fort bragg was picked instead. have i a soft spot for our military heros and american is the sense need bright lights in their life. >> now it's time for our hash tag game for all our friends on twitter. if life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are among the unalienable rights among, what are some of the others? did you know john adams thought we would celebrate independence day on july 2nd? that's when the second continental congress declared a resolution that we were free from britain's rule. he also had some ideas on how to celebrate and it did not involve powdered wigs. he said "it ought to be solemnized with pomp, parade, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires andily you'll nations. he got the parade part right but what about guns? here's gabby giffords this week shooting one for the first time she herself was shot two and a half years ago. she and her husband are gun owners but they are also advocates for more restrictions on guns. this week they are launching a cross-country tour with their advocate group aiming for what they call a soft approach in pushing for more restrictions on guns. i spoke with mark kelly earlier about their tour. captain kelly, thanks so much for joining us. before we begin, how is your wife, gabby, doing? >> gabby's doing great. she continues to improve. she's working really hard. and she's doing really well. thanks for asking. >> americans for responsible solutions, your organization, is launching a campaign. tell me what it is exactly. >> so this summer we're lunching the rights and responsibilities tour. we're going to travel around the nation to certain states that have been critical in this debate on gun violence, to keep the discussion open and ongoing and to, you know, to try to get members of congress and the community to work hard to get some reasonable gun legislation passed at both the state and federal level. >> and the things that you have been pushing, the items that you have been pushing in the past include criminal background checks at all private sellers and gun shows, including limiting high capacity magazines, limiting assault weapons and stopping gun trafficking. would any of those steps have stopped what happened in tucson or aurora or virginia tech or newtown? >> well, maybe. absolutely. especially when you talk about virginia tech. it was very clear that the shooter in that case had -- he was adjudicated as mentally ill. if that information was in the national criminal background check system, he wouldn't have gotten a gun. the same thing is sort of true with tucson. it's a little more complicated. the shooter in that case passed a background check but people knew, even the u.s. government knew he had a history of drug use. the school he attended knew about his melness. the problem is that if he was denied a gun from a federally licensed dealer, he would have gone to the gun show or to the internet and got a gun without a background check. so we need to close those loopholes to make it much more difficult for criminals to get access to those weapons. >> after newtown, president obama talked about how it was important to talk not just about guns but the mental health issue and the glamourization of gun violence in the media. but i haven't really heard much about those two, i haven't heard the white house or organizations such as yours talking about mental health issues or even hollywood. do you think that video games or hollywood movies are part of this problem? >> we talk about the mental health issue all the time. i mean, i was talking about it just last night with a group of supporters. i mean, it something that i talk with members of congress -- members of congress frequently about mental health issues. i was recently, you know, texting senator bagitz about it, senator from arizona. this is a complicated problem. there a not one simple reason why we have 20 times the death rate from guns than other similar countries. i mean, it's complicated but there are some common sense things we can do to address this problem, and we need to pass some sensible gun laws. >> your wife was reportedly furious when the toomey gun bill failed. she said "mark my words, if we cannot make our communities safer with the congress we have no we'll use every means when we have a different congress." what does that mean? will your organization being supporting people to primary democrats who were not supportive? >> well, the gun lobby has been incredibly effective building a lobby in washington with nobody on the other side building. that's going to take time. with regards to primary democrats, we don't real up out any option that gets to to a place where congress will do what americans are asking. nearly 90% of americans agree that the toomey bill was the right thing to do. congress failed to act. i mean, it pretty sad that we have 20 first graders that are murdered in their classrooms and the response on a national level to that tragedy so far has been nothing. so if this congress won't do it, we'll find one that will. >> captain kelly, thank you for joining us. >> there's no holidays for journalists and reporters. in case you're wondering, we have a hidden stash of sparklers. >> we're all set. i'm going to rooftop fireworks to celebrate with my family. >> very nice. coming up on our show, we'll talk about president obama's response to egypt. that and much more in our political lead coming up. ♪ i was born in the usa i met a turtle friend today. avo: whatever you're looking for, expedia has more ways to help you find yours. congestion, for it's smog. but there are a lot of people that do ride the bus. and now that the busses are running on natural gas, they don't throw out as much pollution to the earth. so i feel good. i feel like i'm doing my part to help out the environment. olive garden's 2 for $25 is back. unlimited salad and breadsticks. two appetizers to share. then choose two summer entrees. like new tuscan garlic chicken. 3 courses, 2 people just $25. go olive garden! folks have suffered from frequent heartburn. but getting heartburn and then treating day after day is a thing of the past. block the acid with prilosec otc, and don't get heartburn in the first place.
