So President Biden was very grateful to get a Battlefield Update from president zelenskyy, and of course that Battlefield Update is going to be fresh. Its going to be updated. Its going to be as detailed as president zelenskyy could make it. We know that they havent gone as far and fast as they themselves want to, and we have also known, seen in recent days that they have been making steady progress, particularly in the southern line of advance. Theyre up against tough russian defenses and minefields, theyre working their way through that. The president ial and President Biden unveiled a significant aid package for ukraine, and long range atacms missiles were apparently not on the list. If the atacms are still on the table, why not approve them now, john, while zelenskyy is here in the United States to send a strong message to putin . Theres certainly no announcement on these long range missiles today, wolf. I would just tell you that we continue to talk to the ukrainians. We have and we will about what they need on the battlefield, and you heard yourself, president zelenskyy saying that this package that the president announced today is exactly what his forces need. Were not going to take anything for stand with ukraine for as long as it takes, and, you know, the war would end today if mr. Putin would get his forces out. President biden told president zelenskyy today that the United States will support ukraine into the long term, but doesnt this disarray up on capitol hill over funding for ukraine send a different message . The president , as you heard him say, really were relying on the good judgment of congress here, and in the discussions that weve had with leaders of congress from both chambers and both parties, there has been resounding support, particularly at the leadership level for continuing to support ukraine. And were confident that that support will continue. Yes, there is a growing number of voices particularly in the House Republicans of people that are disputing whether or not aid to ukraine is worth the effort, but they dont represent their leadership. They dont even represent the majority of their party, and so were going to keep at it. Were going to continue to consult with congress. There has been no blank check, for all of this talk about blank checks, every single package, we consult with congress on. Theres visibility ukraine . Look, we really we put a lot of thought into that supplemental request, wolf. That wasnt just Pie In The Sky thinking. There was a lot of analysis in what we thought we needed to help ukraine for the First Quarter of the fiscal year, basically the next three months and towards the late fall its going to start getting tough there in terms of weather. Were really confident that were ask for the right things, and if we cant get that supplemental approved, its going to have a Significant Impact on ukraines ability to continue this fight into the fall. Now, theyve got good weather ahead of them, but as we get closer to december its going to get tough to not only defend the territory they have won back but to gain new territory. Reporter wolf, i would say it had been trending in that direction already but now more than ever the threat of a Government Shutdown is real. Kevin mccarthy decided to send members home for the rest of the week after a tumultuous few days here in the house. Initially gop leaders were planning to put a shortterm funding bill on the floor on saturday. They had loaded it up with conservative priorities, trying to win over hard line conservative critics, but that was not enough. There were too many members who were just saying they would not support any shortterm Spending Bill under any circumstances. And in a sign of the dysfunction, they couldnt even get the votes to pass a procedural vote on a defense bill today. Afterwards, Kevin Mccarthy was visibly frustrated when that vote went down. Lets take a listen. Its frustrating in the sense that i dont understand why anybody votes against bringing the idea up and having the debate. This is a whole new concept of individuals that just want to burn the whole place down. Im certain theyre going to be having lots of phone calls and conversations to pull people together here. Its not clear where its going to go but i know the Speakers Office is working feverishly to drive consensus. The big news of the day was Congressman Lawler of new york saying he would vote with the democrats on a clean cr, which, you know, would be a little bit of a change than what we normally see in the house where you would have one member of the Majority Party joining with the Minority Party to do something. You know, if we get down to it and moderate republicans who live in purple districts in blue states feel like they need to do some selfpreservation, that could be something that drives this debate in a different direction. Jamal, what do you think . How realistic is that Discharge Petition as its called . You know, i dont know how realistic it is, because i cant imagine Kevin Mccarthy would be bring this to the floor just with democrats or with democrats making the difference while most of his caucus is against it. I think this is going to be a real challenge for him. I get worried about Kevin Mccarthy as speaker because if he cant deliver his caucus, im not sure what kind of Negotiating Partner he is for the president. And weve got a lot of big things to manage, incomluding making sure ukraine gets funded and Kevin Mccarthy wants to have debates in the house. He doesnt want to have Volodymyr Zelenskyy speak to the house conference to talk to them. He wont bring him in front of the house and so i think thats another time he could get a conversation, a debate going. Why not have the president of this country speak, and then the members can argue amongst themselves whether or not they agree with what he said. President zelenskyy did meet with the Republican Leadership but not all of the members of the house. He wasnt invited to address the joint session of congress, as you know as well. Scott, i want to get your reaction to what republican congressman and Freedom Caucus member bob good told cnn earlier today about the standoff. Listen and watch this. We expect the speaker and the Republican Leadership to help advance republican priority, republican Policy Objectives to do what he committed to do in order to become speaker, and well evaluate him based on whether or not he does that. I said i think hes accountable to do that. Scott, do you see a realistic path for Speaker Mccarthy to make a deal that doesnt cost him the speakership . Well, yes, i mean, he has pulled a few rabbits out of a few hats this year when we thought he was at an impasse. I think theres a path. If some of these republican congressmen fail to remember, were living in divided government. You have a democratic president , democrats in control of the senate. What happens in the house even if it were to satisfy every republican is highly unlikely, if not virtually impossible to pass the senate, and so, you know, this is the first hurdle to jump over. We are in divided government. Kevin mccarthy has done a has s that he really cant control the house. Right. Seems like the house is running itself without him being in charge. On the other hand, if you were to get rid of Kevin Mccarthy, ho im not sure who it is that would replace him and whether or not that person would do better or be a better partner. The democrats are in a tough position. They may end up having to support Kevin Mccarthy as speaker just to have the person you know, that might be worse off than the ones you have. Thanks for having me, wolf. Good to have you. Lets talk about substantiative international issues, you want to be president of the United States. Today the speaker, mccarthy, he refused to commit to even putting ukrainian aid. I went and toured around the country and saw the barbarism being committed by the russian army, the deaths to civilians, the kidnapping of over 20,000 children, and This Is A War Being Fund Ed by the chinese, russians doing the fighting. North korean, providing weapons to the country. This is a threat to the United States. We have to stand with our allies and friends and do this, and i think this kind of shortsighted isolationism which is what donald trump has bred in our party. You blame trump for this . I absolutely do i absolutely do. He has bred this kind of isolationism in the party. Not understanding that america is at our best and strongest when we are leading in the world, and we leave that vacuum, the chinese will fill it, wolf. And all of these folks in my party who talk about how much they resent, are angry with, threatened by the Chinese Communist party, this is the time to send the Chinese Communist party a message. Interesting. A very important issue that came up in recently days. The Biden Administration will not, repeat, not be providing ukraine with what they want, these long range atacms, missiles. When i interviewed president zelenskyy at the u. N. Earlier this week, he said to me that such a move would be a major loss for ukraine at this desperate time. He needs those missiles. What do you think . I think that we have waited too long to give them all the weaponry they need to win the war. You know, President Biden has done better than President Trump did, and President Trump did better than president obama did regarding ukrainian in my view, but heres the thing, its not good enough. Hes given them just enough not to lose. We want them to win. People dont want these forever wars. The way to end the war is give them the weaponry they need to defeat the russian army. They have made gains in the counter offensive in the late part of the summer, early part of the fall. Lets give them the weaponry they need right now. We need them to win this war. We need to give them, along with our european allies, the weapons they need. And i want to be precise, the Biden Administration is not going to be providing the atacms missiles at least right now. They may change their mind and do it down the road. You think what, its too late . Its wrong. It elongates the war. I mean, look, President Biden has to stop hammering on this. He was hammering on the antiabrams tanks, f16 ds, now on these atacms missiles. Lets give them what they need. Six months from now, we give them everything they need, and theyre not making progress in the war, we have to reevaluate it, but we cant reevaluate it smartly if were not giving them what they need to win. Lets talk about a potential, could be an enormously painful for so Many Americans if theres a Government Shutdown, and it looks like theres a lot of dysfunction among federal republicans on capitol hill right now. Is Kevin Mccarthy the right leader, the right speaker to deal with this very important issue . I think hes the only speaker to deal with it at this point. You know, look, you have a very small number of people, as you know now, wolf, four or five members of the caucus who are pushing it in this direction, but this is what happens when you have such a thin majority as he has. Hes got the toughest job in washington right now in terms of trying to manage all of that. I think kevin is doing the best he can. I think he was honest today. These folks are trying to burn the house down. He needs to be honest and strong about this, and let people know exactly whats happening in the country, and you know, lets face it, your job when you come here is not to shut the government down. Its to run the government more efficiently. And by shutting it down, thats a cop out. Its a cop out. We have divided government. Weve got to come to a resolution with the senate and get this done. I want to get to some of the political issues coming up right now. As you probably know, donald trump, he posted a series of social media attacks going after you. Yeah. Attacks against you last night. He called you, and im reading now, a grifter, he attacked your record as governor of new jersey, and he attacked your campaign. He clearly sees you as a potential significant rival. Right. You know, he said himself, wolf, a few weeks ago, i only attack number two. Well, he has stopped attacking ron desantis. And hes started attacking me. You and i have sat here before and had this conversation. I told you that i was going to gain in this race. We have seen it in all the polling in new hampshire. Im second place in new hampshire. We are going to take on donald trump directly. And he doesnt like it when hes taken on directly, and hes confronted. Im the only one on that stage who is unwilling to raise my hand, besides Asa Hutchinson and say i wouldnt support a convicted felon for president of the United States. He doesnt like when people stand up to him and call him out on the nonsense hes involved in, and i guess he had a Bad Night Last night. Maybe he had bad chinese food or something, a little indigestion, decided to attack me. Keep it coming, donald, and by the way, if he had any guts, he would get on the debate stage, and hes got things to say about me, stop hiding behind your social media site, your failed social media site, donald, and start taking me on directly. Show up. Stop being a coward. The Wall Street Journal editorial today said this about Donald Trumps refusing to go to the second debate next week. The headline there, why is donald trump afraid to debate, and then Wall Street Journal Editorial Page wrote this, hes ducking with competitors who could challenge his record and platform. Why do you think hes refusing to debate. If i had his record, i wouldnt want to debate either. Said he was going to build a big beautiful wall across the entire wall of mexico, he built 52 miles of new wall in four years, and said mexico was going to pay for it. They never did. He said he was going to repeal and replace obamacare. Had a republican congress, he couldnt get it done. Thats not a record to be proud of and what he also led to was joe biden becoming the president of the United States, lots of republicans like me object to that as well, and we want to win the white house back. Hes afraid to get on the stage lastly because he doesnt want to face me. I prepared him for the debates in 2016, in 2020, he knows what thats like. He doesnt want the American People to see it. I do. These were explosive allegations against the form erp mayor of new york who is also a codefendant in full ton county. The person to provide explosive testimony for the January 6th Committee about that whether a secret Service Agent told her that the president lunged at the driver of the so called beast, the car the president of the United States is riding in in an attempt to get him to take him, as the president , to the Capitol On January 6th amid an active insurrection. Shes also the person who said that President Trump at the time did not seem to care that people had weapons as they were going in front of where he was giving his rally and his speech on route, presumably, to the capitol, saying theyre not here for me. She also talked about what mark meadows was or frankly was not doing at the time in terms of being responsive to calls for him to tell the president to stand down or tell those who were at the capitol to stand down. So this is somebody who we already know, has provided some very significant testimony, and i might add, a supporter of trump, was actually present and an employee at the white house at the time of january 6th. So were talking about a very long, in terms of the tenure that she would have been a supporter of trump and the timing of it suggests her credibility that shes not someone who simply was after him or an ax to grind. Thats what has been assigned. Good point. Tell us a little bit more about how significant Cassidy Hutchinsons testimony was for the january 6th investigations was. She has really outlined the big question for people as to what was the president thinking and doing at the time. You know, we all were watching what was going on on january 6th on that very fateful day, and the question was where is the president. The long amount of time before you heard from him in front of the camera, was it begrudgeingly, otherwise, were there adults in the room, was he horrified or otherwise. Thats all part of the story she was able to give color to, i might add. After she retained new counsel. Were hearing these explosive allegations against Rudy Giuliani around the same day on january 6th. Shes alleging, of course, in a forthcoming book that is called enough that he groped her at a rally backstage, putting his hand, allegedly under her blouse and under her skirt, talking about the substance as well of the electionrelated lies that were being told. Now, he has come out to say this is a disgusting lie, that this is not what happened, and they have questioned, of course, the timing of her decision to come forward now, given that shes been in the public light for quite some time. They are suggesting somehow this was an effort to sell more books or boost sales, but you have to go back to your original question, wolf. The idea of ones credibility. And it really is for those who were reading or observing and hearing the testimony whether it be written or, of course, in person for that january 6th hearing, and to understand what would be the motivation to tell the lie, do you credit what she is saying, do you assign her as truthful . How did this latest accusation against giuliani fit into his host of legal problems . He does have a host of legal problems, doesnt he, from the ideas of being disbarred potentially of course, to just more generally losing a law license in certain areas, to of course now being a codefendant in fulton county, and then you have the Defamation Suit that he was a party to. We were talking about two electionrelated workers, ruby freeman and daughter shaye moss, hes got a whole host of troubles around him, but we dont see the allegations Cassidy Hutchinson has raised as part of the indictments so far. What would be broadly looked at if youre the prosecution looking at a case like this and trying to build it is what his State Of Mind would have been on those days, how emboldened he may have been, how careless or reckless or perhaps criminal in nature in the action he was taking. Could you extrapolate from that to determine how he was feeling on other things. It is obviously very tenuous a connection, but the fact that this has been alleged is particularly inflammatory.
