We will be joined by by our guest chris murphy to discuss. And now, folks are feeling the burn, and Bernie Sanders has been taking another leap to the nevada caucuses last night. The votes are coming in, but right now, the vermonts senators victory is not only impressive numerically, but graphically and one that he promises to replicate throughout the United States. In nevada, we have just put together a multi generational and multi Racial Coalition which is going to not only win in nevada, it is going to sweep this country. Former Vice President joe biden appears to be in second place in nevada, and he is living to fight another day and looking to South Carolina voters to revive his campaign, but with the momentum and half a dozen candidates splitting the sanders votes he could be on track to win a prohibitive number of delegates in the next two weeks and the possibility that south bend, indiana mayor Pete Buttigieg warned the voters in stark words. Before we nominate senator sanders in this one shot to take the presidency, lets take a sober look at what is at stake. Cnn reporters are covering the Democratic Campaign from coast to coast as they are moving on to the next voting states, lets start with National Correspondent athena jones in austin, texas, and athena, sanders gave the victory speech last night in san antonio, texas. Hi, jake. It is remarkable that it is a sign of a confident candidate and confident campaign and the fact that he had moved on here to texas which is one of the biggest delegate prizes on super tuesday now a couple of weeks away. He is showing confidence in nevada. He had lost nevada caucuses to Hillary Clinton in 2016, and came out way ahead last night. He did very well among the latinos and winning the latinos and adding to the support by about five points among the black voters, and so the interesting thing about nevada and texas is that these are among the first diverse states, and that is one of the questions facing not only Bernie Sanders, but can he expand the coalition, and he said on the ground they were able to do it and confident in the organization. They did a lot of the latino outreach and hoping and planning to do the same here in texas where there is a huge black and latino population which makes up about half of the electorate here in texas. Early voting is an important thing to mention here, and that began last tuesday and goes until friday and the fact that it is done in four rallies today in some of the biggest cities in texas, he is trying to get the energy and draw out the multi generational and multi Racial Coalition to get over the finish line in texas and do a lot of the work before the early voting. Athena jones in texas, thank you. And jeff zeleny is in charleston, South Carolina and this is where joe biden is calling his firewall. He was polling strongly a couple of months ago, but does it remain the firewall and can he count on winning there . Well, jake, no question that he must win here. The next six days are the most important for joe bidens political career, and this is why. If he does not revive the candidacy here in South Carolina with a win and convincing win, the candidacy will not be able to go forward and the question of the firewall is an open one. He is going to be making the argument as he is traveling around South Carolina for the next several days. He flew here overnight from nevada. He going to be meeting with the voters on sunday afternoon and throughout the week. The question is can he make the argument that he is the strongest candidate to win in the fall. It is an open one, because the race has changed. This is not what joe biden was expecting. He was hoping that South Carolina would launch him on the super tuesday and still might, but the question is even as a win here, is that enough for him . I was talking to one of the top supporters the last evening that there is a path for joe biden no question. 60 of the democratic electorate here is africanamerican, and joe biden is going to be counting on that, but he does not have as much money as the opponents, and he is not advertising as much as the opponents, and so it is very much an argument that he is going to be making without the resources that others have, and the fact that super tuesday is coming three days after the South Carolina primary, a challenge for him as well. Jake, if joe biden is going to revive himself, et is going to happen here in South Carolina and he is going to start the argument today. Jake . Thank you, jeff zeleny in South Carolina. Lets dig into the state of the race, joining me former president ial candidate and dnc chairman harold dean, and also adviser to president bush. And so you said that the biggest blowup with Bernie Sanders, and you have a history going back for decades in vermont. Do you think that Bernie Sanders is going to be the nominee . It is early to tell, and the win is impressive not only because of the margin, but the core base, our young people, and people of color and women, and he really nailed two of those. I have not seen the breakdown on gender, and so he is on the way, but we have a long way to go here. I mean, i dont think that we will have any cogent idea of who is going to end up at the convention until after the tuesday past the super tuesday. So three weeks from now, we will have a good idea of who are the players and right now we have six viable candidates. And mark, sanders has won the popular vote in iowa and outright winning the New Hampshire primary and the nevada caucuses, and realistically speaking, mark, is there any wa to stop him . Actually, i dont, jake. The sanders train has left the station, and impressive win in nevada and across the board as the governor said across all demographic groups. This is a 78yearold man attracting the young voters, so something is going on here that defying the conventional wisdom. I disagree with the governor here a little bit to say that he is going to come out of South Carolina in pretty good shape, and now he has tons of resources for super tuesday across the board, and so in short order not only is he going to be prohibitive frontrunner, but he is running up the margins to make it much harder for anybody else to go into the convention to say that even though you dont have a majority, we should contest this, because he is running up the numbers in such a fashion beyond the expectation that it is going to give him a strong hand in milwaukee. Are you afraid of what it might mean for the Democratic Party if he wins in november or down ballot tickets if Bernie Sanders is the nominee . Does it concern you . Not at all, and i will tell you why. He is certainly a polarizing candidate, but we have an incredibly polarizing person on the other side. As i said before, he showed last night that he can energize the core base. I am a believer in the theory that it is not swing voters, and the definition of the swing vote ser somebody who votes or doesnt vote and not somebody who going back and forth between the republicans and the democrats, and my definition of the swing voter, and if he continues to do this, i do think that he is going to be the nominee, but i am not ready to say that, because there is five other competent people, and there is another debate, and we will see more there, and certainly, i think that i would rather be where bernie is than anybody else. And mark, i have heard some people be skeptical of Bernie Sanders, and some democrats say that the only way to stop him is for other noncandidates drop out, and whether it is ploom beg bloomberg or biden or whatever, and what do you think about the theory . Well, there is some practicality of the theory and coe wale coelescing here in the primary and i think that Amy Klobuchar is going to drop out and maybe others after super tuesday, but the fact is that you have biden, bloomberg who are likely to go a long way down the line, but at the end of the day, the problem is that bloomberg had such a poor debate performance, and he is not in Good Standing even to say if he had enough delegates, he is the nominee, and biden does not have the resources. And governor, buttigieg took aim at senator sanders in the speech, and last night he called his campaign a inflexible ideological revolution that leaves out most democrats. Is he wrong . No, look. I am happy to have the debate, and that is what the debate is about this primary is. It is a contest for the most powerful office in the world. And people are going to say things like that, and they should. I mean, that is what the debate is about, and what the Democratic Party gets the decide in the process leading up to milwaukee and im comfortable with that. There are not any of the candidates that i would be worried about getting our nomination. You know, this is an amazing year when you have six people still left in the race. When i was there, there were three people, and not the lowest of which is me, and i lived to wisconsin before i finally dropped out leaving ait a race between ed wars and kerryedward so this is an unusual year, and voters will punish people if they dont like what they are saying. I remember an insurgent member of vermont running for president named howard dean and so many from the establishment fretting if he could beat george h. W. Bush, but there were people who were in the Bush Campaign who were worried about howard dean to become the nominee, because he would organize the younger people. I can tell you that we were much more worried about howard dean than john kerry. Dont tell me that now. And the clear convictions, and there is a lot of that in Bernie Sanders, and it is conventional wisdom, because ideological it is different for where the voters should be. But you can see the passion that he is creating like trump is getting. And so, the republicans may regret what they ask for in the end of the day, because sanders is with a narrative and the narrative is very much like trumps ironically, that the system is rigged, and you are getting screwed, and he has a different prescription and cause. Governor, the last word. You would have been able to pose a starker contrast with governor bush in 2004 . I would have, but the problem is that i was not all that well organized and i said a few things that i would have been better if i had not said. And it is what it is, and there is an example again, you cant tell who is going to win, because i was 20 points ahead before the Iowa Caucuses and did not win the caucuses, so we dont know what is going to happen yet, and it is a democratic process, and i think it is a good process. Everybody complains of how long it is, and i used to say it all of the time and now it has a new meaning, but if you are not tough enough to get through this process, what are you going to do when putin would ask for alaska back, and unfortunately, we have a president who would give it to him. And alaska is still part of the United States as of right now. And governor dean and mark mckinnon, thank you both for your time. Thank you, jake. And my next guest says that dem kocracy is like a frog bein boiled. So slow you cant tell. And new fears of russian interference in the 2020 elections. Stay with us. Intelligence committee has warned us that the russians have tried to interfere with the 2020 president ial race. Senator serena said that he was briefed that the russians were trying to interfere with his campaign as part of the overall disruption, and now President Trump and an aide are saying that the russians have a preference for President Trump. And the official tells me that the briefer may have mischaracterized the briefing in that the russians do not have a preference, but they feel they can work with President Trump. And joining me is senator chris murphy who is a member of the Senate Foreign relations committee. I wanted to ask you about something that Robert Obrien was asked about on a different show, and specifically the Bernie Sanders element of it. He said there are reports that they want Bernie Sanders to be elected president and that is no surprise, he honeymooned in moscow, no quote. What is your response to that . Well, the National Security advisers should stay out of politics, and that is a political statement, and what we know is that the russians never stopped interfering with american politics. They dont just get involved in elections, but they are involved every single day and the analysis of what they have been doing on twitter since 2016 has been clear. They are weighing in over and over again in support of right wing causes, in support of Donald Trumps political agenda, and of course, it stands to reason that they want donald trump reelected, because he has been a gift to russia. He has essentially ceded the middle east interests to rush sharks and undermined nato than russia has in the last 20 years, and he continues to effectively deny that they have an ongoing political operation here in the United States that by and large is intended to support donald trump and his allies. And the trump people would push back and say that he has gotten nato members to spend more on defense than previous president s have been able to do and that is factually correct and he is spending more on the military than previous president s, which is also correct, and that all of this is hostile to what russia would want. And what we know is that nato is weaker today than ever before, and the fact that donald trump has questioned whether or not the United States would even come to the defense of a nato ally in the future is an invitation to russia to continue to probe at the borders. And of course, the entire impeachment scandal was over the Trump Administrations weakening of ukraine and taking that country and turning it into another political actor in the United States which is going to once again send a message to russia that they can try to move on countries on their periphery without any real consequences from the United States. Which they have not done we should note. And a Campaign Manager cited this quote from Richard Obrien in the tweet, and he suggested in the tweet that the Trump Administration leaked classified intelligence without context to weaponize against bernie and this is a strong charge. Do you agree . I dont know how the information ultimately came out, but what i am worried about is the politicization of intelligence by this administration. The new acting head of intelligence has no background in intel. He is a trump loyalist, and we all worry about this Administration Controlling massive amounts of intelligence, massive amounts of classified information and leaking it out to the press when it advantages them. I have been very worried about the kind of information that the Trump Administration keeps classified there. Are multiple instances of the Trump Administration keeping classified information could be politically embarrassing to the president , but it does not hold true National Security classified information. So the weaponized of classified information is something that we are more worried about especially with the new acting director of intelligence. What do you mean that they are keeping information secret because it could be damaging to the president . Are you talking about the john bolton book . Well, i may not need to be necessarily classified, but might be embarrassing. The meeting with mike pence with ukraine that was kept classified in the impeachment proceedings and contained no classified information and the reason it is classified is because it would have hurt the president s case in the impeachment trial. And i want to ask about the meetings with the former iranian leaders and President Trump said that he thought that your meeting is illegal. I saw that there is a senator murphy meeting with the iranians, and is that a fact . I saw that on the way over. Is there anything that i should know, because that is sounding like to me a violation of the logan act. And the logan act which you know but the viewer may not know, it bars citizens from negotiating with foreign governments, and did you tell the state department that you were going to meet with zarif, and if not, why not . I did. It is my job as a member of the Foreign Relations committee and as the top democrat on the middle east subcommittee to meet with the foreign leaders and even our adversaries, and in fact, it is dangerous that this administration is not talking to the iranians. The trump policy on iran is a total disaster, because iran is more powerful now today than they have before the trump presidency, they are starting the nuclear program, and shooting at troops and i am not negotiating with iran, but it does make sense for somebody to be listening to them and engaged in some level of outreach as perhaps a means to avert crisis and disaster down the road. I have a couple of minutes left, but one question that i wanted to ask you about is that you are known for pushing for more regulations for firearms and guns. And so you were asked about the victim of the sandy hook shooting should be able to sue gun manufacturers and this is what he said. I think that the victim of a crime should be able to sue the manufacturer of a gun . Correct. No, i do not. You said that bernie is a friend, but democrats cannot support a candidate who supports manufacturer immunity. And since then he has changed his position, but have you seen this change . No, he has stood with us to take the dangerous assault weapons off of the streets, and the extent of questioning whether victim families should be able to sue not only changed, but he has voted against it. He has been ally and every single candidate in the democratic primary has made it clear that they will make it a priority to solve this epidemic of gun violence if they are elected president. Do you have any thoughts of the Bernie Sanders is elected the democratic candidate if he could beat donald trump, and what effect it could have on the down ballots . I dont. I think that he could beat donald trump, and Amy Klobuchar and many others could beat donald trump. I think that many of them could fit that bill, and bernies enthusiasm behind him speaks to the strength of the candidacy both in the primary and as a general election candidate as well. That is very strong. Are you endorsing him or supporting him . Well, i am not endorsing them, but i believe this primary is a test of who is ready or tough enough to take on President Trump. Remember, only 5 of the country has voted yet. I mean, bernie has done very well in the opening primaries, but this thing is not a done deal. Anyf of t of the candidates pol well in the primaries, and mayor bloomberg has a good shot at the nomination. Chris murphy, senator of connecticut, thank you for your time. Thank you. From the day youre born we never stop taking care of you. In nevada, we have just put together a multi generational, multi Racial Coalition which is not only going to win in nevada, but it is going to sweep this country. Senator sanders believes in an inflexible ideological revolution that leaves out most democrats. That is the projected winner of the nevada caucuses senator Bernie Sanders declaring victory as his rival Pete Buttigieg tries to stop the momentum. And alexandra, let me start with congratulations, because you are a big fan of senator sanders and senator warren and what do you make of the attack of senator sanders that his ideology is leaving out most of the Democratic Party, and so, i wonder if his expanse is broad enough . I think that it is unique in american politics to have someone who not only bringing in the young people, and the people of color and communities of color who are not historically ignored by both parties, but he is also bringing in moderates. He is bringing the White Working Class that all of the d. C. Pundits so much obsess over, and so it is a big you are a d. C. Pundit now. It is true. I am. And we always talk about the obama and trump voter, but it seems that Bernie Sanders is not only appealing to them, but all of america, and that is what is extraordinary. Do you believe that he can be stopped . Senator sanders . It is a long way to go and 54 states and territories and pump the brakes on everybody who wants to say that we have a nominee. Bernie sanders put out an amazing performance across the board. And he has a larger and more looming test in South Carolina, because the question is can he expand the base or the electorate, and i dont know the answer to that. If Bernie Sanders wants to be the nominee, he cannot be swept throughout the south. That is not going to bode well going into the contested convention, so we will have to see how well he can do, and see how well he can do with the black voters. The argument there is if im a democrat, and well, we are going to lose the south in the general election, and the fact that joe biden is going to win states that were not competitive in the general election. With all due respect, i am pointing out that you have the backbone of the Democratic Party. And the black voters. I get that. I get that. And wisconsin and if im the sanders campaign, i am saying that i can win in pennsylvania and win in michigan and win in the states they am going to win in the democratic primary and i am not going to win alabama or South Carolina, so the fact that joe biden can win there is really of no consequence. And can i ask you about the latino vote, because this is part of the argument that sanders is making. According to entrance votes 51 of the hispanic vote he won, and he said not only can i win nevada with that vote, but ki win texas. That is to me, the surprising part of the evening the 51 of the hispanics who voted for bernie. I think it has to do with him saying that i will give you free college and by the way, i will wipe out your debt if you happen to have gone to college and gotten yourself in debt, i will wipe it out, but the problem is that last night, i believe it was putin. I mean, we are going to have the most divisive election if bernie is the nominee, we will see two very, very angry people representing two very different extremes of their parties, and i think that helps make america more chaotic, and it makes us more divisive and the one who is getting advantaged by that is russia. I think it is interesting, you know, because i hear that progressives are labeled as devie dev divisive and the tiny fraction of america, and obviously only the first four states, but he won 51 of the latinos, and everybody said that joe bidens firewall for joe biden is South Carolina, and the same can be said for Bernie Sanders with latinos. I dont believe it is free stuff, but he is doing the work, and outreaching to a community that has not been talked about. He voted against a 2007 immigration proposal that actually, you know but he has enlisted movements of young latinos on the ground and one of two president ial candidates calling for a moratorium of the deportations within the first 100 days i wanted to take issue with what linda said. Two angry folks representing the extremes, and i would agree with that with Bernie Sanders, and he is representing no question the extreme of the Democratic Party and he says that he is a socialist and he is angry, i agree, but donald trump is not representing the extreme of the Republican Party, and he is crafted a new Republican Party, but i would not say it is ultraconservative i agree with rick, he is not. And hold on. This guy is not for Social Security reform or medicaid and if you want the look at the extreme hard right, that is not donald trump. And the issues that he is representing is the extreme. He is divisive racially and e ethic ly. Well, he is a divisive person, but not the policies. With all due respect, this is the Donald Trump Republican party and it is going to be Donald TrumpsRepublican Party for the next two decades and he as completely transformed the conservatives in the United States of america. I would say that he is Rick Santorums party, because i was writing about the blue collar conservatives and middle income people, and that is what donald trump has done. Not a tall one but a big one. Michael bloomberg argues that he is the safest bet to beat donald trump. He is not safe. He is just rich. Senator Elizabeth Warren taking direct aim at mayor Michael Bloomberg last night who by the way did not compete in the nevada caucuses and including warren taking a shot at how tall bloomberg is. Lets discuss. I thought that i was surprised by that. And you want to know why Elizabeth Warren is not doing better . It is because of things like that. I know that the pundits love it, and it makes for great television, but it turns people off. It turns me off. I thought that she came across as nasty during the debate, and that kind of the comment is beneath her. It is wreaking of desperation, and i think that is the reason that she never merged as the candidate that people thought that she would be. I think that biggest question of Elizabeth Warren has to answer is where does she win . She had the vaunted ground games in New Hampshire and iowa and nevada and placing fourth and fifth, and the highest finish was third in iowa, and she is not going to win in South Carolina, and the question is where does she win . She is treating Michael Bloomberg as a pinata and she hits him and money falls out. And 20 million she has raised because of the attacks, so it is going to keep her in the race for a while, but she needs to articulate where she will win. And now, talking about Elizabeth Warren seeming angry and nasty and rick said that about Bernie Sanders seeming angry. You dont deny that they seem angry, and you think that it is okay, because there is a reason that people have for being angry . Yeah. I think that there are a lot of americans right now across the country who are suffering and really hurting. We have people who are rationing insulin and people die because they cant get access to it in time. They are going across to the Canadian Border or the Mexican Border to get their prescription drugs, and you have 60 of the americans if they got an 800 emergency bill, they would be out on the streets, and that is the america that we are living in right now. So, yeah, i think that a lot of people are angry and really upset, and the polls are showing that they dont see it as some angry person like and the other thing that we have to remember is that Elizabeth Warren has a lot of credibility also with the movement. She stood by people during occupy wall street. The progressive movement. Yes. And when not a lot of people did and she built the Consumer Protection bureau from the groundup, and she has prioritized working families, and for Michael Bloomberg and what we have to ask ourselves as a Democratic Party, why is a billionaire at the top of the ticket . Ali v toy hit you back on that, and going after wall street and destroying wall street also destroys the wealth of many average americans who have their pensions in it. And so this idea that we are going to divide this country, and again, it is the idea that it is going to be Bernie Sanders and donald trump and in which we have the very, very angry voices out there, and again, that plays right into the enemys hands. It makes us look like a country that is so divided racially and by class and other things that we cant possibly lead the world. That really harms america. I think that people want to protect main street and not just wall street anymore. I would say that the division that we are seeing play out here in president ial politics reflects the division in the country. All you have to do is to look at what we see on the social media. Now is that a clear reflection of the country . I dont know. But if it is anywhere close, this is a very divided country, and donald trump showed that within the republican ranks, the angry person who came out there and said, we are tired of being pushed around and making the claim, and donald trump makes the claim for working americans, and contrary to what you said and i am not invalidating any of the stats that you said, but he can make the claim that lower income americans are doing better, and poverty rates are better and he will make the claim that his policies have helped middleclass americans more than bernies appeal which is the same as trump that i am going to fight for you and beat the man. And which is counter, because we are not sure what Michael Bloombergs message really is. So bloomberg is going to be playing the looming role tuesday, and the only message is that i am going to make it rain from heavens above and we will have an ad war and i can compete, because i can say that donald trump cheats at golf or he likes the steaks well done or eats them with ketchup. And so people to understand those are billboards. And not a big winning message. No. And so, i think that at least bloomberg has a message that gives hope to america. And what . He talks about health care and his performance as mayor. He is not giving a lot of hope to a lot of black men in this country, i can tell you that. And he has more black votes and support among the black community according to the polling than a lot of people thought. We have to wait and see that. And Michael Bloomberg is trying to do the same pitch of i am going to run america like a business, and im going to be the billionaire savior and believe in me, and that is what i think of donald trump. Except, i think that the American People except it is not a business. And so when you are seeing Bernie Sanders rising nationally, the entire movement is not about me, but the us. And this is a wonderful panel. It does not seem like you guys have coalesced around a candidate. No endorsement from the panel. If it seems longer than just 18 days since President Trump was acquitted in his impeachment trial, that may in part be because since that moment the president has packed in quite a bit of business with a remarkable focus on rewarding loyalists and punishing his perceived enemies. Almost immediately showing the door to key impeachment witnesses Ambassador Gordon Sondland and alexander vinds mand and vindmans brother who did not testify. Pushed out john rudd. U. S. Attorney jessie liu saw her nomination yanked this past week. Thats because lius office supervised the prosecution of convicted confidant roger stone whose sentencing the president tried to influence attacking the prosecutors sentencing recommendation which the Justice Department dialed back prompting all four prosecutors to resign from the case. Its a lot to take in. In his latest stop in his vengeance tour on friday came the resignation of acting director of National Intelligence joe maguire. He had vouched for the integrity of the Intelligence Community whistleblower. One of his subboard naptss briefed the House Intelligence Committee about continued election interference by russia and asserted the russians have a preference for President Trump. Thats a charge the National Security adviser told me may have been a mischaracterization since the intelligence is that the russians have no preference, though they do think they can work with President Trump. Maguire was just replaced by u. S. Ambassador to germany Richard Grenell who has been a vicious protrump attack dog. Grenell forced out the number two intelligence official in the u. S. Government Andrew Halman and brought into the inner circle 29yearold former body man john macintee, fired from the white house in 2018 because of security clearance issues, now hes the president s new personnel chief and on thursday macintee told cabinet officials to be on the lookout in their department and agencies for appointees who are disloyal. One aide said the president demands personal and unqualified loyalty to him and him alone not to constitution or rule of law or god or country. What might that mean Going Forward for our government . Well, we might have seen it. Senator Bernie Sanders acknowledged friday he had been briefed that russians were interfering in the democratic primaries and helping his campaign to disrupt it all and then National Security adviser Robert Obrien on a different chanel misrepresented this intelligence stating the russians, quote, want Bernie Sanders to get elected president , thats no surprise, he honeymooned in moscow. That intelligence per that official is, quote, there is no preference, not bernie, not trump, unquote. The russians are helping sanders as part of a campaign to sow discord in the primary. I asked a security official why did obrien say that . He said, quote, perhaps his first instincts, obriens, are more political than that of a National Security professional and that National Security official noted on friday, President Trump had said this about putin. Wouldnt he rather have bernie, who honeymooned in moscow . The National Security official said to me, quote, by saying that, obrien injected himself into the campaign by commenting on a potential rival. If hes willing to say that as National Security adviser, what does that mean for the next nine months . And what is obrien doing when the camera is not on him, unquote. President trump was impeached but not acquitted for abusing his office to get reelected. Republicans said at the time they thought the president had learned his lesson.
