Let me start by asking about the president and you said the president s original comment was racist. Many of your opponents Bernie Sanders, julian castro, Kamala Harris called trump himself a racist. What makes you stop short of that . Well, i actually am not. The reality is this is a guy who is worse than a racist. Hes actually using racist tropes and language for political gain to use this as a weapon to divide our nation against itself and this is somebody who is very similar to george wallace, to racists who uses the exact same language. Even more than that, we see a criminal Justice System that not only attacks women, we have 86 of the women we incarcerate are survivors of Sexual Assault, but a prison system that was super charged by things like the 1994 crime bill. So we have to solve these problems and do it today. Part of that record comes with the doj report and talks about some of your time with mayor and says black residents were at least two and a halftimes more likely than residents to be stopped, arrested or searched. The report says this about black residents, quote, this unde undeniable experience of beinro the policing shows the distrust that undermines the policing in newark. Do you take any responsible for the way this policing hurt plaque reblack residents of newark under your watch . Yeah, i took responsibility and accountability and we stepped up to deal with the problem. Not only working with the doj but the aclu to put full word what was a National Standard setting level of accountability. Soim pro so im proud of that record to take on the problems and frankly, as a senator, i put forth legislation to create more Police Accountability and transparency so that we can begin to deal with some of the deep racial issues we have that permeate not just policing but also everything from prosecution actions to our criminal Justice System as a whole. We had real challenges in the city of newark and we worked hard to deal with that and transforming the court system. We did a lot of things that really have become models for what needs to happen, not just in new jersey our our nation as a whole. I want to get to health care, which is a huge one in the race for the democratic nomination. Your 2020 opponent camilkamala s that supports medicare for all said she would not raise taxes on the middle class to pay for it. Joe biden went on the attack this week. Lets listen. You have a lot of people running saying im not for that tax. There is no way to be for it if you dont. So youre a cosponsor of medicare for all. Would you raise taxes on the middle class to pay for it . Im a cosponsor of a lot of bills that can deal with this broken system, the cost are tremendously to the tune of hundreds and hundreds of trillions of dollars more. We have a deeply broken system. If im president of the United States, the first step im going to take is to create a public option that will reduce cost within the system driving down Prescription Drug cost and attacking bureaucracy going on. As somebody that had to run something, i was a chief executive of our states largest city during a recession. We found ways to battle back bureaucracy, lower costs and make things more senator, do you want to do that . But do you want to do that with the medicare for all plan . Because youre a cosponsor, that suggestions that the answer is yes but youre saying maybe not. No, look, what ive said very clearly to folks is i believe that medicare for all is the end that we should be seeking. But anybody who says that cant be a political slogan. There has to be a pathway to create a vibrant public option and driving down costs for americans and creating options so people dont have to rashtio Prescription Drugs. Bernie sanders would do it at the beginning. Get in the white house and that would be what they would do. For you thats not . If we had 60 votes in the senate now, all the democrats in the senate wouldnt even support that. This is about not letting the perfect be the enemy of the good. Were dealing with a country that needs a lot more good. Is medicare for all unrealistic . Look, medicare for all is what we should be going for but the first step has to show we can create a public option allowing medicare to be available for more people and well drive down cost because people from a private pool will begin to choose medicare for all. Older people, more older people, 55, 56 will choose that public option to make the private pools go down. Youre right. I do know the reality of congress but i want to make as you were were clear, you said medicare for all, your aspiration cant pass so it wouldnt be your first issue out of the gate. Im not taking anything off the table. I believe that this election for our nation needs to be a movement election. So we dont necessarily know what congress is going to look like. My goal is that in america, all americans agree with this, in this Country Health care should be a right. Nobody should be being denied Income Opportunities because they cant afford them. Whats the first steps we can take to begin to get there . They have to involve increasing access and lowering costs for americans. I am more than confident i can be the president to deliver on that. Here is the problem that you have in claiming that this is racist. I would agree the fact he picked out four women although they have sort of identified themselves as the quad squad so not like he picked them out. They are an identified group. The fact they are people of color is problematic. What he is criticizing them for is not the color of their skin, hes criticizing them for the positions they take. If they were white, would he say go back to your own country . If the squad included white people, he would be as equally critical. He would not say go back to your own country.
