All of this while a slew of trump cabinet picks will appear before congress as wall to wall confirmation hearings begins. Plus, of course, washington is still learning more about the bombshell Intelligence Community report presented to president elect trump on friday about russia interfering in the u. S. Now that president elect trump has been formally briefed has he been convinced that russia carried out a Cyber Campaign against Hillary Clinton . And what is he prepared to do about it . If you read his entire statement and followed the briefing on friday he makes clear that russia, china, and others have attempted to attack different government institutions and businesses and organization and individuals over a series of times. He specifically mentions the Democratic National committee because thats why were having this conversation. I dont want your viewers to be misled into thinking somehow the kremlin or the Republican Party they had the kremlin was dealing with any of the hackers and bringing that information back to moscow and somehow that anybody who allegedly attempted to influence our elections actually did. If you read the full report, mr. Clapper in his testimony made very clear on thursday under oath that any attempt, any aspiration to influence our elections failed. They were not successful in doing that. Thats a very important point. We are talking about it because we had embarrassing leaks from the dnc emails. There were no fireworks in that report because there was no fire wall at the dnc. What the Intelligence Community said is that there was no evidence that russia was able to penetrate any of the voting machines, and affect the yoet come that way. But they made no conclusion whatsoever, they said they didnt have any evidence and it wasnt in their charge to determine whether or not the information that was hacked by russia that was ultimately leebd to the public, whether or not that changed any votes. And if you listen to what mr. Trump had to stay on the stump all the time, he invoked wikileaks dozens and dozens of times to try to suggest that the wikileaks said that there were things that Hillary Clinton was doing or had deny that were untoward. Take a listen. All you have to do is look at wikileaks and see what they said about bernie sanders. Wikileaks came out, john podesta said some horrible things about you. Wikileaks that just came out. And she lied. Now shes blaming the lion the late, great abraham lincoln. So i guess what im confused about is how can you say that the hacking had no impact on the election when mr. Trump kept invoking wikileaks which was printing, publishing things that the russians had hacked . Obviously he thought it was going to have an effect on the election. It had an affect on his debate answer and had an effect on the campaign because it was interesting to find out where she was wondering allowed testing 84 slogans to find out who she was. I know thats embarrassing. And then them calling Chelsea Clinton a spoiled brat. Thats very uncomfortable. Thats what was hacked. There is an apparent attack on rnc im informed but they had sufficient fire walls. And Hillary Clinton look if you look at cnns own polling data for one year before the election Hillary Clinton was viewed by the majority of americans as unlikable and she was viewed by a higher number as not honest or trustworthy. What i guess i dont understand is why there is this reluctantance by president elect trump and people around him to acknowledge russia did this. The only disappointment i would express is that the briefing came after leaks to the media, after leaks to nbc at the very least, after leaks to some print outlets, jake, we cannot have people in positions of keeping us all safe and knowing classified information on intelligence information we cant have have them leaking to the media. You heard Kellyanne Conway talking about that, why is everybody talking about this and not something in a happened in 2013 or 14. What do you make of donald trump calling this a witchhunt . There is no one more undermining the legitimacy of the obama pressy than trump. His refusal to accept the conclusion the report from the Intelligence Community that this was russia, its more denial of what took place. One of the key conclusions of the intelligence agencies in that report, this was not a one off. They will do it again. They will do it to, us to germany, to france. This is an attack on liberal democracy. We in congress on a bipartisan basis need to be able to work with this new president to push back against the full sprek trum of russian malign influence. This tells me he is not up to the job. One of those who endorsed trump came out and said he accepted the conclusion of the Intelligence Community and a few days later said he was no longer an adviser to president elect trump. I dont know the back story exact egoing on. But do you think president elect trump is distancing himself at all from people who accept the premise of the Intelligence Community that russia was behind this . Heres the thing. The people who are the closest advisors with donald trump have been through a Brutal Campaign for 18 months. You can get wrapped up into the campaign fight. The campaign has been bleeding over into the transition. I think president obama has contributed to that. Democrats have contributed to that. Certainly Donald Trumps Transition Team has contributed to that. I would argue this. Its time to break this notion. He won. He will be president. Russia is not to say that russia was involved in Information Operation campaigns and being shocked is like saying the pope is catholic and being shocked. They have been doing this for 70 years. They have Better Success than others depending what region of the world they tried it in. We need to start transitioning and pivoting to the real challenges of National Security. The politics needs to end for all sides on this. Im getting very worried this is bubbling over and this is the only conversation. Think of mifs and collin grad by russia. Think of the arctic operations they are planning, in arctic, they are at least contesting the u. S. Position in the arctic. You look at absolutely uncontrolled bombings in aleppo where they didnt compare who they argumented, men, women, children, civilians, they didnt care. This is where we need to start talking. We need to remove this political debate. If i was advising trump i would say stop talking about it. We need to talk about the National Security threats to the United States. We have to rally around this. We have huge challenges facing us. You were underseth of defense in the obama administration. Last month you met with general mattis who is going to be the secretary of defense assuming he is confirmed. What is your read on trumps position to russia . And do you think that he is on a collision course, retorically and policy wise with general mattis who like many in the National Security community including everybody at this table believes that russia is a majoreeio political foe . I think the most disturbing aspect this episode is that president elect trump hasnt made that transition from candidate to about to become commander in chief. He needs to have a cleareyed perfective on the full range of National Security challenges we face, including a very aggressive russia. And russias interests are not aligned with ours in most cases. Putt seine pursuing a policy in europe, in syria, and elsewhere that is not aligned with ours. And i think when he gets into the oval office, he will find that there are many people in the National Security enterprise, including someone like general mattis who came out of a military background i think most of the chairman of the joint chiefs, the service chiefs, the cocomes have all testified that they see russia as a very real and present threat because of the actual actions they have taken, the annexation of crimea, the invasion of ukraine. The positioning of nuclear weapons. The increasing competition in the maritime domain, the space domain and as weve seen in the cyber domain with an unprecedented attack on the u. S. Democratic process. That clear eyed discretions to happen and there may be fireworks within the cabinet because there is a broad range of views. It seems to be that position, which is the widespread position among people in the National Security Community People at the pentagon is at odds with the kind of language we are hearing from president elect trump. He just tweeted the other day, having a Good Relationship with russia is a good thing not a bad thing. Only, quote, stupid people or fools would think that it is bad. What do you make of that . I would say only stupid or foolish people think our interests are aligned with russias. For the most part they are not. There is a concentric area where yes we share some common interests and we should work with them when we can. We fleed the recognize their goal is to discord democracy, to tear down everyone they consider a threat, they consider democracy a threat to their autocratic way of life. That is a core antagonism to our National Security interests. Yes, its nice to make friends. Yes, it would be great if russia was an ally. Its not realistic and we need to be clear identify and sober about what the russians are about. I think it alarms the republicans and the democratic when we continue to see the president elect speak in a way that presumes this is about making nice or assumes the reason why putin didnt get along with obama was a lack of respect. It wasnt lack of respect. It was a lack of common interests and the fact in a the russians in our view have a very maligned version of the world and one we need to fight back tooth and nail. Im not sure why there wasnt a specific comment but if you look at the totality of what he is talking about it isnt that far out of line from what barack obama said when he got elected and said im going to reach out my hand and talk to our adversaries. My argument is there is a long history here. Ronald reagan was aggressive about engaging talks with the soviet union at the time. And at the time people said thats dangerous. He is an adversary. I think we have to give space here to say you want conversations with russia. As long as we understand that they take adversarial positions and have been very aggressive millitary and and with their Intelligence Services from space to ground to cyber then you can probably get to a better conclusion. You worry about the world view sitting around the table. You want as many and different National Security experts sitting around that table that have that world view. Let me tell you why mattis is so good and why she is sparks are going to happen, he doesnt see the politics of this, he sees the National Security threats. He will walk away. This is not a guy that packs up and goes home. He will be in the room advocating for the right positions based on the let. I think thats a very important voice in the National Security circle. I agree he is willing to speak truth to power. President elect trump needs an Intelligence Community that speaks truth to power. If he is not careful in negative any grating the community he will have a problem about being able to draw on their good work to create a case to the people if he does need to take action. I think the president elect should say that russians meddling made a divisive election cycle even that much more divisive. No matter what side we are on, it should be clear that no other nation has a right to interfere in our elections and we as americans have to make sure Something Like this never happens again. We are going to want some of them, some of the money thats there from obamacare is going to have to be used at least some version of it has to be used to finance a lot of the proposals being put forward to help sub siddize the private Insurance Programs that will be put forward. There will be a repeal and replace. I dont think lojs logistically they are going to put up a vote to repeal everything and then have to vote for a new tax increase to put everything in place.
