That describes the content of the new tape from donald trump and the status of republican officeholders across the country revolting against his candidacy. Gop leaders calling on their nominee to drop out just days before the election, an unprecedented move because of this vial language about how donald trump treats women. I better use some tic tacs in case i kiss her. When youre a star, they let you do it. You can do anything. Grab them by the [ bleep ]. You can do anything. We are now just hours away from what could be the most critical moment of Donald Trumps campaign as he takes the debate stage with Hillary Clinton right here on cnn. Her running mate, tim kaine, joined me for an exclusive interview. Thanks so much for joining us, senator. Appreciate it. Absolutely. So lets start with this new donald trump tape that came out on friday in which he exhibits a casual attitude towards Sexual Assault. Is Hillary Clinton going to bring it up at the debate sunday night and what is she going to say, if so . Well, i dont exactly know what shes going to say about it during the debate. I imagine some of the undecided voters part of this Town Hall Forum will have questions about it and i think its for donald trump to answer it and take responsibility. His statement, trying to say, look, i regret these words, its not just words. It really is talking about a pattern of Sexual Assault and so i just i cant imagine that undecided voters that are part of this town hall will not want to hear him explain why he thought that was acceptable behavior. A pattern of Sexual Assault is what you said and that certainly sounds like what hes saying but do you know of any evidence that he actually acted in that way . My understanding is that their stories in some papers today with some individuals basically saying that they were subject to exactly the treatment that he describes on the tape. So, you know, this would be a question for donald trump to answer if he says i may have said those things but i never did them, thats one thing. But, you know, i think the tape raises an awful lot of questions and if you take that tape as donald is accurately describing his actions, then, yeah, its a pattern of assault of behavior and much more than words. And i think the issue that it raises is not just a question for donald trump to address as he talks to the voters during the debate but its also something that candidates who stood with donald trump have to address. If you are a gop officeholder or candidate and stood with donald trump, people ought to be asking you now, do you still think hes qualified to be president and do you still support him . A number of people are withdrawing their support. Anybody who hasnt declared where they are in that question needs to be asked that question. As you note, a number of republican lawmakers are withdrawing their support. A number of them are also calling on donald trump to step aside and let governor mike pence be at the top of the ticket. Without getting into state by state campaign and election law and whether thats even possible, do you think that would be the right move for the country . Well, i dont presume to give the gop advice. The gop had a nominating process and chose donald trump as their candidate. Youre right, jake, that it is a complicated thing, the votes of all 50 states. My son, for example, is in the military. Hes deployed overseas. He cast his vote a week ago. There have been hundreds of thousands of votes cast in multiple states and by troops and americans living abroad. So its complicated. But the question of who the gop nominee was was resolved and up to them to determine what they need to do about it. Im sure you know donald trump put out a video message on friday. He said i was wrong and i apologized and then called it a distraction. And then take a listen. Ive said some foolish things but theres a big difference between the words and actions of other people. Bill clinton has actually abused women and has bullied, attacked, shamed and intimidated his victims. Im sure that Hillary Clinton is preparing for that charge to be leveled on sunday evening. Whats your response . Well, you know, there was some chance this was going to come up at my debate earlier this week because donald trump, after he lost the first debate, went to the spin room and said, okay, now the clintons marriage is fair game and, you know, i cant say how donald trump should run his campaign but i can say this. The Clinton Kaine campaign is not about this, not about the marriages of folks at the top of the tickets. Its about issues that voters care about. I know that those voters at the Town Hall Forum tomorrow night are going to have a lot of questions and i bet it will be about how to grow the economy and keep america safe in the word. And if donald wants to talk about something other than voters want to talk about, thats his choice. I suspect Hillary Clinton is going to talk about the things that voters really care about. You also said a few minutes ago that voters are going to have a few questions about what donald trump says on this tape, not as though the personal conduct of donald trump is something that voters are not interested in. Is it not possible that some of them might also have questions about bill clintons behavior and Hillary Clintons response to his behavior . I would find it unlikely. Again, its going to be those voters that ask about it. Remember, jake, this is actually part of a broader pattern because, as i was getting into in my debate tuesday, donald trump has run a campaign where hes perpetrated a bigoted lie that president obama wasnt a United States citizen, hes gone after muslims, immigrants, attacked military families, john mccain, a p. O. W. And has said many deplorable things of women. Theres a broad action towards all kinds of people and that is i think why this issue on friday just so galvanized people, because its not something you can explain away as an aberration or hear something, this is me ten years ago. Its not who i am now. Theres plenty of evidence that this is exactly who donald trump is today and by this i mean divisive and cavalier in his treatment of others. With respect to women in particular, what this shows, i think at its base, is that he cannot consider women as his equal. I think theres a piece of the jigsaw puzzle missing in donald trump where he does not look at women and consider them as equal to himself. Theres a story from 2002 when the Virginia House of delegates Vance Wilkins was facing allegations of misconduct and it says that you were quoted as saying, if the allegations are true, he should definitely resign and he says that you held the same view of the Monica Lewinsky sex scandal. Does that describe your view presently . Not my feelings now. Were in 2016 now. Theres two names on the ticket and its donald trump and Hillary Clinton and thats the choice that voters have to make. Lets turn to the revelations from wikileaks. We finally got a glimpse at the famous paid speeches that Bernie Sanders wanted released during the primaries and one of them during a 2013 speech secretary clinton said this. My dream is a hemisphere common market, with open trade and open borders. Is that what she wants . I dont think we can dignify documents dumped by wikileaks and assume that they are all accurate and true. Anybody who hacks in to get documents is completely capable of manipulating them. But you asked the question of what is her position on policy. Hillarys position on policy, on markets and trade is very plain, which is, well do trade deals but only if they meet three criteria. Do they increase american jobs, increase american wages and are they good for national security. If they are and we can enforce them, then trade deals are okay. If not, we cant embrace them. As you know, Hillary Clinton is a u. S. Senator and she voted against others when they didnt. Were going to fight so that the only trade deals well con testimony la template have the right standards. Did Hillary Clinton not say to these brazilian bankers this jake, i have no way of knowing the accuracy of documents dumped by this hacking organization. But i think it is really important. This hacking has been connected much of the hacking has been connected to the russian government. Yesterday, the director of National Intelligence indicated that this kind of hacking has been traced directly to the russian government and theres a direct intent to influence the outcome of an american election. If that is in fact true, you cannot accept as gospel truth everything that they might put in the document. You didnt ask about the document. You asked me what Hillary Clintons position was. Right. Thats fair. Is this document, then, is it ac accurate . I have no way of knowing that. Well, you could ask her. But but, the documents are in the thousands. I havent asked her that. Her position on trade is very clear. What about her position on borders . She says in this document that her dream is a hemispheric open borders. Ive got to start with this explosive audiotape of donald trump that came out on friday. This tape, which was recorded in 2005, we hear donald trump saying in a vial and disgusting way and voicing a casual attitude towards Sexual Assault. What was your response when you first heard it . I think it was the response that everyone else did, horrible remarks, certainly dont want to hear from anyone and then when you reflect on it, he apologized and realized that he was wrong and doesnt reflect the way that he looks at things today and i think he made a full and complete apology for it. Hes probably going to do it again tonight. So then we have to factor that into all of the other things that are involved in this election, which include whats going to happen with our economy, with us nationally whether well have higher taxes, lower taxes, what kind of Supreme Court judges well have. And the question is, is this the one issue on which we should decide it. Apparently, democrats dont think its the one issue that they should decide their election on, the fact that Hillary Clinton seems to use the state department as a pay for play operation of the clinton foundation. Hundreds of millions of dollars, 20 of our uranium sold to russia. 200 million or so going into the clinton foundation. These are things that are equally as bad. In fact, criminal. But the democrats seem to overcome that and the republicans, you know, are panicking. I understand you would want to change the subject. I would, too, if i were you. I dont know a lot of people who saw the tape, the apology, thought it was a sincere apology. Ive heard Trump Supporters describe it as not seeming sincere. In the tape he goes on to say that he goes on to attack bill and Hillary Clinton for their behavior. Normally a full and contrite apology is just an acceptance that one did something wrong and its not just its this casual attitude and then no deflection, just, i accept it, i did something wrong and thats the end of it. He went on the attack against the clintons and i think a lot of people felt, boy, this doesnt really feel like an apology to me. First of all, it was an apology. He definitely apologized. I know from talking to him that he genuinely feels very sorry about this and its certainly not the views that you holds today. Hes run for Public Office and spent the last year and a half traveling around the country. He realizes the responsibility of the people that follow him and that we have to make a change in the country. That alone has put a heavier weight of responsibility on his shoulders than he ever had even when he was an entertainment star and star of the apprentice. And you realize that roughly half of them believe what he believes and think this country needs a very big change and hes the agent of that change. So i guess the question is, hes talking about actions that are Sexual Assault and he was 59 or 60 years old when he said it. It wasnt something that he said when he was 18 years old. Hes talking about a feeling of entitlement because hes a star, he can go up to women and grab them by the vagina and its okay and he wont get in trouble for it. Its really offensive on just a basic human level. Who did he do that to . First of all, i dont know that he did that to anyone. This is talk. I will gladly tell you, mr. Mayor, i have never said that, i have never done that. Im happy to throw a stone. I dont know any man ive been in locker rooms, ive been a member of a fraternity. Ive never heard any man, ever, brag about being able to maul women because they get away with. Never. Weve taken it to an extra degree. In any event, weve taken it to an extra degree of what he said. The fact is that men at times talk like that. Not all men. Do you talk like that . Im not justifying it. I believe its wrong. I believe he knows its wrong. I believe this is not the man that were talking about today and maybe the reference to bill clinton and Hillary Clinton is the fact that youre really upset about this but, gosh almighty, there were a lot of things particularly, Hillary Clinton attacking the women who bill clinton sexually assaulted, sexually abused and she was the leader of the attack against him. So maybe he felt that at least put in context, the kind of anger that would be to him. I think a lot of these charges came out in the 90s and i think it offended a lot of people and continue to offend a lot of people. But bill clinton, as weve discussed, is not the nominee. Do we expect whoa. I wasnt to go after the clintons on this issue . I dont expect i certainly dont expect him to go after bill clinton and youre right, bill clinton is not the candidate. But Hillary Clinton is the candidate and Hillary Clinton, in many of those situations, was as a leading or part of the attack on the women who were telling the truth. And i dont really know that that is factually accurate. She said nasty things about gennifer flowers. I dont know that thats true, mr. Mayor. It is true. Read the books about those times and all the things that had to be done when governor clinton was running for president and the women that had to be visited. Youd have to be naive to realize that that wasnt going on. Plus, the things with Monica Lewinsky. You cant sit there and say its not true that Hillary Clinton was attacking these women. There are all kinds of quotes from her about it. Even in George Stephanopoulos book, he talks about it. You say what really matters are the issues facing the American People today. Even before the story was out, Hillary Clinton was winning in almost all battleground states. We have 16 republican senators, 16, who say they can either not support donald trump or that he needs to reexamine his candidacy or even possibly drop out of the race. What is your message to these senators, governors, members of the house who say they are not voting for donald trump and he should consider to leave the race for the good of the party . His presidency will be a heck of a lot better than Hillary Clintons. He will reduce taxes, put us in a much stronger position with regard to radical islamic terrorism. I believe his approach to radical islamic terrorism is going to help reduce and eliminate these attacks in america that are the greatest attacks since september 11th in less than a year. Has anyone in this inner circle broached this subject . Is he even aware that 16 u. S. Senators of course he is. Are saying they are not voting for him . What is his response . I wasnt aware of the exact number until you gave it to me but i was aware various people were asking for him to step down. Yes, hes aware that a number of republicans could pull their support and hes not going to drop out. Hes going to remain. He is going to apologize for what he did. He is going to explain to people that is not the man he is today and count on the fact that the American People are fair, decent people and when someone asks for forgiveness, they usually give it. And the reality is, this is not the man this is not the man that ran for president for a year and a half and has learned the tremendous concerns that the American People have and really is the only one right now in a position to straighten it out. Andre, what are we going to hear from donald trump . Is he going to be contrite or go on the attack . I think is going to be a defining moment. I think he has to come out very humbly and say, look, ive made his steaks in my life and i feel sure that the Hillary Clinton campaign is armed and they are going to throw things at me i dont feel good about. But im a different man than i was back then from today. Ive been influenced by the great people as ive traveled and so many people reaching down deep to find solutions to real problems that washington has not fixed in decades. And he had his remarks prepared and he crushed it and people saw that he was passionate about what he was doing. This is a chance for donald trump to do the same thing. Amanda, it seems quite obvious that people think this is over. You see republican senators leaving in droves. Rudy giuliani the only one willing to go out and defend him this morning. Kellyanne conway would not do so. Its a matter of mitigating the damage at this point. Listen, the gop will suffer for doing the right thing and also doing the wrong thing. The suffering is coming. Only one way leads to healing. I think a lot of republicans are hoping donald trump will meltdown on stage and they can declare that the wicked witch had died. No. The party has to fix it. The only way to maintain credibility against Hillary Clinton is to distance yourself from donald trump. He is not going to withdraw. He has never withdrawn from the entire primary process. Now, the irony here is this for me. This man came on to the scene politically attacking five innocent black boys accusing them of, what, Sexual Assault. That was the central park thats right. Im standing up for my country. Thats right. He comes on to the scene and says five boys committed Sexual Assault. They were innocent. He then says mexican immigrants are, what, rapist, Sexual Assaulters. And it turns out the super predator is the man running for president. You have a super predator running for president and his name is donald trump. I want to challenge the media now, put up the pictures of those five innocent young boys and donald trump and ask america who is the thug here. Who is the thug . Its donald trump. Heres the thing. I expect bill clinton to be brought up tonight because donald trump is desperate at this moment in time and it makes me sad to see trumps defenders. This is like invasion of the body snatchers. People ive respected have gone down an ugly road. If you bring up bill clinton, there is a standard. The republicans tried to impeach him and remove him. If you dont try to remove donald trump, too, you have lost your morals. Heres the thing. We know that donald trump retweet retweeted Juanita Broadrick. Look at the people defending him today. Rudy giuliani is the only one today. I want to talk about mike lee. You remember him from the floor at the convention, free the delegates, vote your conscience. He was fighting that fight and it was an amazing thing. Theres been a lot of talk this election about beating back the system, the rich and the powerful. The convention was rigged for donald trump by the party. Those people need to be held accountable and those people arent showing up on set today. They wont defend what they did and they should be held accountable for it. There is a system that they could vacate the nominee. Its complex. They need to have those meetings. The fact that people think they can run and hide and cower is reprehensible. Theres the state by state ballots and the fact that its almost impossible, if not impossible, and people are already voting. The people on the ballot are indicative of the partys preference. You cant change the ballot. Its essentially a shorthand bait and switch. They should be talking about it if they recognize that donald trump is talking about Sexual Assault and criminal activity. Can i Say Something . What you just described is a full Employment Program for every election lawyer in the country. There would be a blizzard of lawsuits. Every Single Person who voted for trump and then had their vote switched to pence. Youre basically saying because your party nominated this person, the entire country has to be bludgeoned into chaos. You should not be allowed to have a lateterm abortion of your candidate. You are late in the term. You have to go ahead with this process. They should look at all options possible. And the establishment is against him and the media is against him. The folks out here like this that are out there, they are fed up and if you did that, it would destroy the Republican Party. Too many people have been engaged in the process that would feel like they were stripped of their voice, whether you like him or not, he was the nominee and he is the nominee and hes going to be on the ballot and its down to two candidates, who is going to be president , and you would send the Republican Party back three decades as to ever being able to get people to come out and engage in the process. The party has made their bed and now they have to lie in it. Im sorry, but its true. The people behind us are supporting trump and his steadfast supporters will continue to support trump. But he needs more than that. He needs blacks, hispanics, women. Right now, theres no chance he can get these people. I think this election is lost for him. Amanda, do you think these 16 republican senators, except for the ones already against him like mike lee and a few others, are they now opposed to him because they are horrified by these remarks or do you think its going to be a landslide for clinton and we need to try to mitigate the disaster so we dont lose the house and senate . A little bit of both because they are political animals. The thing that this media brought to light, you are forced, if you havent asked yourself, con city wents are going to ask you, is that a crime . Will you enable that behavior . If you say im going to support him, endorse him, you are complicit in what hes talking about. Van . I want to take a bigger step back. This is a big moment. How did we get here . How did you get a Republican Party willing to nominate someone like this . Lets not forget you have a failure on the part of the Republican Leadership on the one hand but we can argue about what that was. I would argue, as a democrat, president obama put forward completely moderate proposals. Obamacare was romneycare. The american jobs act, things that republicans found acceptable until he got there. Weve had eight years of comple complete obstruction from the Republican Leadership and calling that socialism. You now create a situation where youve sewn the seeds for extremism in your own party. Its not just the Republican Party. This is the democratic party, too. If Hillary Clinton hadnt stolen this, Bernie Sanders would be running.
