And crisis in charlotte. He better not be dead. Im not going to come there. The candidates cancel trips to the area because the police chief says things are too sense to protect them. How is it going to end. The best political minds will be here for the campaign trail. Hello i am jack tapper in washington where the state of the union is counting down the debate which is almost upon us, and its the first time the two will meet facetoface after months of brutal attacks on the campaign trail. Donald trump theyenireatening te a frontrow see the to Gennifer Flowers. Flowers in case you need your memory jogged or maybe youre young former Arkansas State employee and dancer who nearly derailed then governor president s bill Clintons Campaign in 1994. As for trumps invitation to tomorrows debate flowers told the New York Times quote yes ill be there but the Trump Campaign has not confirmed whether they actually invited her. This was all in response to clinton inviting billionaire trump critic mark cuban to the debate. That escalated quickly. The promised spectacle comes as the candidates are locked in a dead heat. Clinton has 46 , trump at 44 , l libertarian gary johnson at 5 , and jill stein at 1 . Im joined by the Trump Campaign manager, Kellyanne Conway. Thank you for joining us. Appreciate it. Its my pleasure, jake. Lets start with tomorrows big debate. Take a look at what donald trump tweeted yesterday, quote, if dopey mark cuban of failed benefactor fame wants to sit in the front row perhaps ill put Gennifer Flowers right alongside of him. Afterwards Gennifer Flowers, who had an affair with then governor bill clinton sent a text message to the New York Times saying yes, ill be there. Can you confirm if Gennifer Flowers will be at the debate as a guest of mr. Trump . No, i cannot confirm that. I cant believe how easily baited the Clinton Campaign was. Mr. Trump was saying look if mark cuban will send out these texts that say the humbling at hofstra and this is his big downfall then mr. Trump was putting them on notice we can certainly invite guests that may get into the head of Hillary Clinton. Weve not invited her formally and dont expect her to be there as a guest of the Trump Campaign. I do think it was odd just one day after Hillary Clinton was rebuffed by democratic mayor of charlotte to please not come to charlotte, not to divert resources, not come at this time, then they exercise the poor judgment the very next day by putting out a statement by the campaign about Gennifer Flowers and what this meant with donald trump, that he shows hes easily provoked. No easily provoked people here were the Clinton Campaign. Very poor judgment. Were going to talk about tissues that face america. Thats what the debate is. I can understand why Hillary Clinton want as billionaire in the front row. Thats another monday night for her. Were taking the case directly to the American People tomorrow night. Just as a point of fact, i think both trump and clinton were talking about visiting charlotte, and the mayor said they didnt have the resources for either one to visit. But i think its curious and a lot of viewers are wondering you think whats odd is the Clinton Campaigns reaction to donald trump tweeting about somebody that her husband had an affair with decades ago, not the fact that donald trump tweeted something about someone, the nominees husband had an affair with decades ago. It seems odd that they would give it life and breath since you just said three times in a row that governor clinton had an affair with her. I didnt say it but now a lot of americans donald trump gave it life, did he not . No he basically well, they could have left it at that. What he said if shes going to do this as a way to beat him then perhaps it was in his tweet hell invite Gennifer Flowers there, or have her sit in the front row. I also just want to say, jake, this particular president ial debates are incredibly important so that we can hear the visions of these two candidates. Donald trump is out on the stump every single day. In roanoke last night. Four or five swing states this week giving policy addresses, talking about issues. Hillary clinton is running negative ads against him. What should be fact checked . Hillary Clintons Campaign two weeks ago saying she was going to become more uplifting and optimistic and aspirational. Where has that gone . Its negative ad after negative ad. Its negative pieces of mail, phone calls, get out the vote programs. Were just not going to do that. Were taking our case directly to the American People tomorrow in this debate, and, may i add, every single day out on the stump. Its hard to argue that donald trump hasnt been negative about Hillary Clinton. I want to ask you, in fact, is he planning on bringing up bill clintons marital infidelity during the debate itself. This is something hes discussed on Fox News Channel and in other places and its something hes talked about in speeches. Mr. Trump will answer the questions as they are asked by lester holt, the moderator. And he has a right to defend himself against anything that mrs. Clinton, secretary clinton may say in response. Theres no plan to do that. Im not going to reveal what weve been doing in our debate conversations. The fact is he has every right to be defend himself. Hes always constantly attacked and the moment he counter punches and people are shocked that he would do that. He would try to defend himself. He will answer the questions as we certainly hope the questions go to policy. Answer the questions that the American People have. They deserve and expect these candidates to be talking about the issues. Abc the Washington Post came out with a poll overnight shows the issues that motivate americans. They want these candidates to talk about the economy, terrorism, health care, immigration, National Security. And so mr. Trump is ready to have that conversation. You say he only counter punches, and i know thats the methodology of the Trump Campaign but he attacks people on their own all the time without being provoked. Heidi cruz, ted cruzs wife is a perfect example. Rafael cruz, ted cruzs father is a perfect example. Ted cruz just endorsed donald trump, a big moment for your campaign. I know you used to support ted cruz. Has donald trump apologized to senator cruz for attacking his wife and suggesting that his father had something to do with lee harvey oswald. I wont reveal their private conversations, but i will say were thrilled to have the endorsement much senator cruz. And we know that senator cruz and donald trump combined in the primaries, got the lions share of the votes. Between them they won most of the states, with very few exceptions, as you know. John kasich won one, marco rubio won one. Not his homestate. So together they really do represent a large part of the party. But im very happy that senator cruz kept his promise and adhered to principle. He signed a pledge saying he would support the republican nominee. I appreciated the fact that when senator cruz endorsed mr. Trump on friday, jake, he did not just do it in a statement. He didnt just say im going to vote for him. It was a very lengthy, very thoughtful presentation of the six reasons or so why donald trump is much preferable to Hillary Clinton. The supreme court, National Security, cyber security. He went on and on with that. Thats incredibly important. Donald trump recently, according to all the polls, has been able to pull in the romney voters. He has 9 in 10 romney voters, Hillary Clinton that 8 in 10. Donald trump has also been able to get 90 or so of republicans to support him. Senator cruzs endorsement will help. It shows great party unity. Let me turn to the influence of russia. On march 21st, trump spokeswoman hope hicks confirmed to cnn that carter paige was a Foreign Policy adviser to trump, and that day trump himself identified paige as a member of the team. Both these stories still on your campaign website. We learn from yahoo news mr. Paige opened private communications with senior russian officials about lifting economic sanctions. Has your campaign spoken with mr. Paige about this . I have not spoken with him at all, meaning hes not part of our National Security or Foreign Policy briefings that we do now. Certainly not since ive become campaign manager. Is he not part of the campaign anymore . No, hes certainly not part of the campaign that im running, meaning we dont have him we have a number of people, fabulous people, men and women as part of our National Security and Foreign Policy team. Hes not among them at trump tower. I also will say if hes doing that hes not doing that with the permission or knowledge of the campaign the activities that you described. If hes out there talking to russian officials, hes not doing so on behalf of the Trump Campaign in any way, shape or form. He certainly is not authorized to do that. Kellyanne conway thank you so much. Good luck at the debate tomorrow night. Well all be watching. Thank you, jake. Mind games. Donald trump threatening to invite jennifer flowers to sit in the front row of the debate after Hillary Clinton gives a ticket to mark cuban. Will the Clinton Campaign escalate the feud further. Hillary clinton is spending the weekend in mock debates preparing for tomorrow nights faceoff with donald trump. Who is playing the role of her rival . Well, turns out one of her closest confidants. Sources tell cnn that her onetime press secretary who she described as shrewd and loyal is pretending to be trump to help her prepare. Theres a lot riding on the debates for both candidates. Lets talk about it with Clinton Campaign manager robby mook. Thanks for joining us. Thanks, jake. Lets start with tomorrows big debate, donald trump tweeted yesterday about Gennifer Flowers. I know you know who that is. You heard Kellyanne Conway saying that they not have actually formally invited her. The bigger question is, in the mock debates are you preparing for anything . Are you preparing for the Gennifer Flowers of the world to be invoked . Well, jake, as you would appreciate, nobody knows which donald trump is going to show up to this debate. And, in fact, his erratic temperament has been the subject of quite a bit of discussion in the debate. I would argue thats why hes not fit and prepared to be president. Big picture, this is an opportunity for the American People to look at these two candidates and see which one is ready to be our next president and commanderinchief. And i think the fact that donald trump is spending the hours before this debate on this sort of thing is indicative of the kind of leader he would be and the kindergarten of president he would be. Its a warning sign before the debate has even started about Donald Trumps lack of fitness, his bullying tactics that make him unfit to be president. Former obama adviser, david axlerod, who wants Hillary Clinton to win, is concerned that if Hillary Clinton spends a lot of tomorrow night attacking trump, that might not be enough for her to win the race. He told the Washington Post, quote, if trump find as way to normalize himself it can be a trap door. Going into this debate, do you think its more important for Hillary Clinton to sell her own vision or to paint donald trump as a threat which could in doing so feed into her issues with likability and trustworthiness, et cetera. Jake, im really glad you asked this question. I think this is really the heart of the matter. Every time hillary has had an unfiltered opportunity to talk to the American People about not just what shes going to do to make their lives better the specific plans and policies that she has, but also how her entire life and this campaign is part of a mission to help kids and families, shes done better. And so were really excited to have that opportunity. And to your point, im very concerned that drionald trump wl be graded on a curve. Just because he doesnt fly off the handle in the middle of this debate doesnt mean hes prepared to be president of the United States. He needs to have coherent answers to the questions. He needs to demonstrate a command of the issues. He needs to roll out specific plans about how hes going to make life better for americans. I was a little surprised to hear kellyanne imply he has those plans. We havent seen them. He has a secret plan to defeat isis. He wont tell anybody what is it. He says he knows more about isis than the generals. Thats not a specific plan. And thats not being transparent with the American People about what those plans are. So we hope that will come out at this debate. And we absolutely want this to be an opportunity for hillary to deliver her message directly so the people can understand shes fighting on their side. Does secretary clinton have anyone in her orbit who can be brutally honest and frank with her . I ask that because it seems based on a lot of the information weve gotten about her emails and the like that she might not have people like that and in debate prep it would be very important for somebody to really be able to go after her to prepare her for a debate and i dont know she has anybody like that in her orbit. She absolutely does, jake. Anybody who has worked for secretary clinton, first of all, knows that she surroundeds herself with experts on every matter she looks into. She just did a call earlier this week after the events in new york with her National Security team. But she also likes a spirited debate and a spirited discussion. And the people she brings closest to her are the ones that challenge her thinking and push her. This preparation process has been very rigorous. Again, she released plans i mentioned on isis she released that ten months ago and that was the product of rigorous debate and discussion with experts. Shes continuing to update that as i said, as that situation evolves. Thats who Hillary Clinton is. Donald trump has not released specific plans and unless he does that and unless he tells the truth during this debate, unless he shows his ability to conduct himself without lying constantly hes not getting a passing grade on this debate, and hes not ready to be president of the United States. There was a document dump on friday we learned from the fbi that an i. T. Contractor managing Hillary Clintons private email server made reference to the quote, hillary coverup in a work ticket. He used that after an aide asked him to automatically delete emails after 60 days. This i. T. Worker thought he was covering something up, no . Look, jake first of all, im really glad you asked this question. A lot of this stuff is swirling around out there in the ether. Its important to pull back and look at the facts. The fbi did a comprehensive and deep investigation into this and at the conclusion of that, fbi director comey came out and said to the world that there was no case here. That they did not have evidence of wrongdoing on hillarys part. Whats the hillary cover up operation that the i. T. Worker was referring to . This is the perfect example of whats going on here. The republicans in the house side are selectively leaking documents for the purpose of making hillary look bad. We asked fbi to release all information they shared with everybody so we can get the full picture. Again i would trust the career professionals at the fbi and Justice Department who looked into this matter, concluded there was no case than i would republicans who are selectively leaking information. I want to turn to the subject of immigration, because its a topic thats sure to come up tomorrow, its a major part of the Trump Campaign. I know you have a lot of criticism of Donald Trumps position. When it comes to Hillary Clinton i have to ask about sanctuary cities, cities where they dont enforce federal immigration laws and that sometimes means people who are criminals, who are in this country illegally end up getting free and committing worse crimes. Its a fact that that does happen. Does Hillary Clinton consider sanctuary cities to be a problem . Well, first of all, jake, as you mentioned we do think this is a really important difference between both of the candidates. And secretary clinton has released a comprehensive plan for Immigration Reform. This is something shes pledged to do in the first 100 days. We cannot have a situation where anybody is coming to this country illegally and committing crimes. And so she has, as i said, put out plans to make sure were removing violent criminals from this country but that can happen at the same time that were not tearing families apart. And that were making sure that hardworking people who have been here for a very long time come out of the shadows, come in to the system, pay those back taxes, become citizen, and so actually our economy can continue to grow. Im not clear, though. Does she want to end sanctuary cities or not. You say people shouldnt be coming into this country illegally. But a Clinton Campaign spokeswoman last year said that Hillary Clinton believes sanctuary cities can help further Public Safety and she has defended those policies going back years. Does she support sanctuary cities or not . Well, i think thats i think thats too narrow a view of the situation. We need comprehensive Immigration Reform. And part of impressive Immigration Reform is making sure that Law Enforcement has the tools to find these violent criminals and get them out of the country. And that for people who do not have legal status right now that we put them on that path to citizenship. I look forward to further clarity on the sanctuary city issue specifically. Thank you very much. Good luck tomorrow night. Jake, thank you very much. Appreciate it. Coming up, masters of the dark arts. I know youll tune in to tomorrow nights debate here on cnn, and youll want to know what to look for. What are the traps that Hillary Clinton and donald trump risk falling into. We ask two debate pros to share their secrets on what works and what doesnt when it onlies to president ial debates. With me now, David Axelrod served as Senior Adviser to president obama and mark mccannen, who was brought in to prep sarah palin for her debate and worked with president bush in the 2008 campaign. Thanks, guys for coming in. Good to see you. Hi, jake. So you have both stew did and worked to beat candidates from the other party for years. Mark, what does Hillary Clinton need to do tomorrow night to win the debate . I think basically two things that both candidates have to do. She has to disqualify donald trump and he needs to qualify himself. But, you know, she is going to be really prepared but theres a whole notion that all trump has to do is not come off the chain. She needs to make him come off the chain. She has to wear him down and prosecuting him for 90 minutes. He can hold his composure 30 or 40 minutes. 90 minutes is a long time. She needs to persevere and wear him down with facts and policies. And make it clear hes not ready to be president. Thats what its all about at the end of the debate. Who is ready to be president. David, what does trump need to do to beat clinton . First of all he has to do what mark suggests. He has to show a modicum of mastery of details of governance and he needs to show the temperament that people feels he lacks in president ial temperament. But i agree with mark. One of the Big Questions here is stamina. For all of his yammering about stamina, trump wearied at the end of the primary debates. He was able to hide because of all the candidates on the stage. Theres no hiding in these debates. Its 90 minutes of rigorous exchange. Top line answer wont be enough. So that is now the question is whether knowing that he tries to turn this something into something other than a debate, and turn it into a spectacle and go hard after her and try and unsettle her. Because her mission in this debate in addition to doing what mark said is to project a kind of connectedness with people to connect, to project her motivation, to allay some of these concerns that go not to her experience but to personality and her approach to politics. Speaking of spectacle, it was reported that Gennifer Flowers was invited to the campaign. The Trump Campaign said they did not forly invite her. Bill clintons infidelities is not a big topic of discussion for hillary, however in 2000 during a Senate Debate heres how she responded to a question from the moderator about not being honest with the country about her husbands involvement with monica lewinsky. Take a listen. I didnt mislead anybody. I didnt know truth. Theres a great deal of pain associated with that. And my husband has certainly acknowledged that. And made it clear that he did mislead the country as well as his family. David, do you expect her to respond the same way if flowers is mentioned or any of that subject . You see, trump is coming at her from a different direction than rick lazio did. This wasnt about her misleading the country. Hes attacking her in hopes to getting votes of women who are strongly voting her way. Hes raising the notion that he mistreated the women who were involved in those cases which is a harsh charge. I have no doubt that they spent is a lot of time prepping for that because it would be like trump to make an attack like that. Its a highrisk strategy and, you know, its a hard one for her. So i think they have been models this out in their debate prep. I have to assume they have. Mark, if you were advising donald trump would you tell him to bring this up . I wouldnt go near that. Thats such a risk. I think that they are so prepared for anything that comes near that question or that issue. And thats the kind of that could be a debate ending moment if he gets anywhere near that kind of territory. I would just add one thing. When this came up in 2000 it went to her benefit because there was a great deal of sympathy for her and the situation. I agree with mark, that its a highrisk strategy. But you never know with donald trump. Mark, we know its not just what the candidate says on stage but how he or she presents himself or herself. Al gore heavily criticized for sighing frequently in 2000 in those debates against governor george w. Bush. Take a look. Practicing fuzzy math again. Theres differences. Ive had a record of appointing judges in the state of texas. Thats what a governor gets to do. Theres no new Accountability Measures in Vice President ial gores plan. Theres a split screen, candidates. Theres a split screen. Donald trump created a psychological profile of Hillary Clinton, looking at body ticks, body analysis. Does that work . Well first of all that just shows you they are not winning it, they are doing psychologically profiling, examining as you just mentioned. But, of course the campaigns we always try to make a deal with commission that there wouldnt be split screens. Body language is important. Talked to jim lehrer, he was watching the candidates that he was questioning, and he had no idea that al gore was doing that. And it was his daughter who said afterwards that, dad, you realize al gore lost that debate. He was like what are you talking about . Those body language issues are big signals to the audience and people will be watching temperament and body language. David, another key thing to watch for tomorrow night are oneliners. They can win or lose a debate. Back in 84 running for reelection Ronald Reagan was facing questions about his advanced age. He was 73 at the time. This course is the famous way he handled it. I want you know that also i will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit for political purposes my opponents youth and inexperience. David, roger ailes, the former head of fox news, has had a hand in Donald Trumps debate prep. They were having sunday chats testing out zingers. Can you plan Something Like this . Yeah. Roger ailes was involved in that debate prep with reagan in 1984. Hes very well versed in this. These debates come down moments. You dont get graded for 90 minutes. They come down to revealing moments. Yes, both camps are probably planning these exchanges and hoping to land lines that accentuate their message. I want to say one thing about the split screen thing. I cant emphasize this enough. In the primary debates Donald Trumps split screen image was, i thought, damaging to him. He looked like Jackie Gleason in many moments. He has to avoid that kind of thing in this debate because if his goal is to appear president ial, then Jackie Gleason isnt going to fly. Can i say one thing about the zingers. You have to be good. Actors are good landing lines. Politicians are not. Ronald reagan was an exception. The prop with zingers, if you try to coach your candidate to think about a zinger then they get so focused on that and when they will do it during the debate they dont focus on the moment. We found nine times out of ten it doesnt work and better to stay in the moment and not thinking about landing a line somewhere. As often happens you get a good spontaneous moment like bush did on the fuzzy math thing. It depends on the candidate. Some of these candidates are more proficient than others. Hillary clinton my guess is will come in armed with a really sure sense of how shes going to deal with certain situations, including lines. I can talk to you all day. Thank you you so much. Candidates are cancelling their trips to charlotte as the mayor says the city is too tense but weigh in from the campaign trail as the protests continue. Thats next. But we have that flexibility of knowing that if you know things get worse, we have this to help keep us afloat. So thats very, very important for us. Pedaling the narrative of cops is a racist force in our society and this is a narrative thats supported with a nod by my opponent. You see what shes saying and its not good. Shared directly in the responsibility for the unrest that is afflicting our country and hurting those who have really the very least. That was donald trump with a strong response to Hillary Clintons comments about the violence across the country. Joining me now is our panel. Van jones, congressman marsha black burn, and the former executive director of the Congressional Black Caucus and andre bower, from the great state of alabama. Van, let me ask you, there are those democrats who worry that the unrest in places like charlotte will help donald trump. Well, thats true. I tell you what, donald trump has botched an Incredible Opportunity to reach out to africanamericans. I was saying many times in the fall, it is unnatural for one go up to vote for one party 90, 96 . Theres a huge Growth Opportunity for republicans. Youve seen the most inept, botched, failed, zigzagy out reach to africanamericans. On one hand he sticks up for one of the shooting victims in tulsa. And he turns right around and says i want stopandfrisk. Stopandfrisk the most unpopular the least effective and the most alienating policy period in policing in 20 years. Found unconstitutional. Found unconstitutional. He reaches out for that. You can criticize Hillary Clinton if you want to. What youll see when this campaign is over is the biggest missed opportunity for the Republican Party with black voters in a generation. What do you say . I would take, of course, a different approach to this. First of all, i think Everyone Needs be careful about how they talk about these issues on tv. I think that it is imperative that we support assembly line. Its what separates us from order and anarchy. With that said, should we be doing more with threat assessment and that kind of training, body cams of that nature . Absolutely. Donald trumps remarks were directed at the comments of institutional racism. And pardon me. Thats something that, indeed, needs to come to an end. Mike pence talked this week about bringing that kind of talk of institutional racism. The talk or practice of it . Well, both. No, no. You dont you cannot say all cops are bad. But there are issues that cops need address, absolutely. But to say they are all bad or that theres an institutional racism. I think its very important when we talk about institutional racism to understand where that comes from. And what gets dangerous is when we pretend that history isnt what is it. As we commemorate the First National museum of africanamerican history and culture lets remember the treacherous history of Law Enforcement and our first interaction with Law Enforcement in 1784 and the slave patrol. Thats our first interaction with Law Enforcement. The foundation of the institution is horrible for us. You pass those tales down by again ration to the point where kids like me growing up now im 36 are afraid of the police. And thats not for nothing. Theres a history there. Even after reconstruction there was vigilante violence. We cant pretend this came out of nowhere. This is a new phenomenon. Were just now seeing it on video. Lets bring it back to the president ial election which is, andre, do you think we just heard congressman blackburn talking in a fairly nuanced way about these issues. Is that what you hear from donald trump from the stump or do you think hes painting, pardon the expression more of a black and white picture. Absolutely not. This is the difference between a career politician and a business person. Look hes making a concerted effort to go after minority efforts and trying to do the best job he can to reach out to them. When a problem arises he doesnt worry what the most political correct term is or what poll is the best. He said heres what worked heres what saved lives. In new york it did work. Hes trying to come up with a way to fix a problem as someone who is as someone who is looking at it from a Bigger Picture than worrying what poll is best. Im a 16 member of Law Enforcement and i can tell you most of them are good. Were now blanketing all of them as bad people. One of the most important things in this country is a safe society we all agree all five of us agree, you can note paint the police with a broad brush. Well, Hillary Clinton has been. I want to say something. Im from a Law Enforcement family. My father was a Police Officer in the military, my uncle just retired from the Memphis City Police force. What africanamericans want is effective and fair policing. Thats all. But its very important to point out here a couple of things. When someone says theres institutional racism they are not saying every single Police Officer hates black people or every what they are saying is something is happening where theres a bias, where an africanamerican kid wearing a hoodie seems to be a threat. A white kid wearing a hoodie is seen as silicone entrepreneur and theres an unfairness there. You got to look at it. The big danger i see is when you Start Talking about data, when you Start Talking about trends and then somebody says you just hate all cops that shuts down the discussion as well and thats not effective. That was my original point. Everyone needs to be very careful about how they discuss this. You need to go back and look at things that have worked. Stopandfrisk did not work. You need to look what Rudy Giuliani did in new york. Can we talk about that . Then you need to see what happens every study showed we have 500 in chicago that have been murdered. We should talk about that as well. Stopandfrisk needs to end. Every study showed that you had a fraction of people that had any guns. Burglaries did not go down. Robberies did not go down as a result of that. Cities that did not implement stopandfrisk had a steeper decline in violence. This who methodology that terrorizing and alienating a whole generation of africanamericans was good for africanamericans has to stop. No. You have to be sure what youre doing is looking at things that have worked, making certain that there is training on threat assessment. Then making certain Law Enforcement, who are on the front lines every day and deserve our respect they put their life on the line. They got the tools they need.
