Become a verdict on race in america. And the death and legacy of a washington, d. C. , political powerhouse, mayor marion barry. This is state of the union. Im Gloria Borger in for candy crowley. We all remember when ambassador Chris Stevens and three other americans were killed in a terror attack at the u. S. Consulate but the facts of the matter have long since been lost in a haze of investigations. By our count, eight so far. The latest comes from the House Intelligence Committee. Its conclusions are simple. No conspiracy, no coverup and as for the political shennanigans, absolutely not. With us, senator Lindsey Graham, one of the most outspoken critics of the administrations an delg of benghazi. Lindsey graham, thank you for being here. Thank you. The committee says, first, no outright intelligence failure. Second, no delay in attempts to rescue gauze sdplee staff. Third, those famous susan rice talking points were inaccurate but not deliberately misleading. Senator graham, the report says the misinformation was flawed, yes, but no political coverup by susan rice or anyone else. So, does this exonerate the administration . In my view, tray gouding and Elijah Cummings are doing a good job at looking at benghazi as a whole. The state department has yes or no . No. No. I think the report is full of crap. Why . Quite frankly. Why . The Deputy Director of the cia when i ask him, do you know who changed the talking points with senator ayotte and mccain and susan rice sitting by his side said the fbi changed the talking points. Only later did we find out through a lawsuit that mike more rel was deeply involved in changing the talking points. The Deputy Director of the fbi when he was sitting in front of a Congressional Panel and he was asked, does anybody here know who changed the talking points . He sat silent. So the Intel Community through him lied. So youre saying the Intel Community is lying to the House Intelligence Committee. The administrations not exonerated no, im saying the House Intelligence Committee is doing a lousy job policing their own. Im saying that anybody who has followed benghazi at all knows that the cia Deputy Director did not come forward to Tell Congress what role he played in changing the talking points and the only way we knew he was involved is when he told a representative at the white house, im going to do a hard review of this, a hard rewrite. And so obviously he didnt tell the Congress Sitting in front of us that he substantially rewrote the talking points and who told susan rice that the compound consulate was substantially strong and significantly secured . That wasnt in the talking points but she said that. Okay. But what the cia deputy cia director that youre talking about said that they got conflicting information, the mistakes were a reflection of how little we knew at the time. But let me move on thats not the question. No. Can i interrupt . Absolutely. Thats not the question. The question was, not how you gathered intel, who changed the talking points . It went through several changes. Who came out with the version most politically beneficial to the administration . The man that asked that question to substantially changed the talking points and he never told me or anybody else he had a hand in it and sat quietly in front of a senate and House Committee when asked directly, do you know who changed the talking points, he didnt come forward. We only know later that he was involved when we found information gathered through a lawsuit. So he misled the congress. So let me playback something to you that you said on fox news this past spring about those talking points and about susan rice and whether someones lying in the administration and then well talk about it at the other end. Three days after the attack, they did not give a damn about the intelligence. They wanted to create a political narrative to protect the president and im not going to stop until someone is accountable, someone is fired for not coming to the aid of these people for 9 1 2 hours and somebody ought to be fired for lying to the American People and not telling the truth. When susan rice said i have no regrets, i gave the American People the best evidence available, thats a boldface lie. So this report says no one lied, period. That they were receiving Bad Information but no thats a bunch of garbage. Thats a complete bunch of garbage. Who told susan rice so why is the republican chair on the House Intelligence Committee buying a bunch of garbage . Good question. Answer it. Yeah. Thats a yeah. I dont believe that the report is accurate, given the role that mike more rel played in misleading the congress on two different occasions. Why didnt the report say that . When susan rice was on television after the attack, she said on three different occasions the consulate was strongly, suck stangsly and significantly secure. Nothing could be further than that from the truth and theres nothing in the talking points about the level of security. She gave an impression to the American People that these folks were well taken care of when it was in fact a death trap. Who told her to say that . Ben rhodes came up with the talking point saying under no circumstance can we suggest this was a riot caused by a video when there was no evidence to that. To your point about the death trap, senator, this report also says that and im quoting here that there was no evidence that there was a stand down order or a denial of available support. Do you still believe that there was . I can tell you that three contractors working for the agency said that they were told to wait for 20 minutes. This report puts all the blame on the state department and absolves the Intelligence Committee when the department of Defense Committee has looked at it, the department of defense was held blameless. At the end of the day, everybody is pointing fingers to everybody else. Thats why you need a joint select committee. Thank god for tray gaudy and Elijah Cummings. When they say there was no manipulating of the American People, that is absolute garbage. When they say that there was no evidence that the cia personnel misled the Congress Regarding changing the talking points, that was a lie because i was on the end of the receiving lie. People say this is enough already, that we dont need another investigation, that we shouldnt be spending taxpayer money. Right. On yet another investigation. Your my response is my response is that if were overreaching, if trey gowdy and Elijah Cummings are doing this for the wrong reason, it will blow up in their face. If the things im saying about this episode fail to bear fruit, it will blow up in my face. But the people who have been looking at benghazi in a stovepipe fashion have not come up with a reasonable explanation for all of the shennanigans and the fact of not being prepared on 9 11 and i hope a joint committee looking at all three agencies together rather than stovepiping can get through this but as to our intel and the house, i dont buy the idea that the agency did not mislead the congress because i was there when they misled me. I dont buy the idea that everything was just the state departments problem and you had no blame yourselves. I dont believe that. Okay, senator. Well, thank you very much on this. We know where you stand on it, certainly, but please stay with us. Good. Because we want you to join us in the upcoming conversation on immigration. But before we get to that, i want to go to democratic adam schiff who just issued this report that senator graham is so critical of. Congressman schiff, thanks for being with us. Whats your response to senator graham who says that essentially the House Intelligence Committee got sold a bill of goods by the cia . Well, i have Great Respect for lindsey but it reminds me of a lawyers max sim that if the law is not on your side, emphasize the facts and if the law is not on your side, bang on the table. This was a twoyear exhaustive investigation. It was released by the republican chairman of the Intelligence Committee and had the support of all of the republicans and democrats on the committee. Its designed to be the definitive word oh of what happened and nothing that lindsey said at all contradicts of what is in that report and calling it crap does not change the fact that it was an exhaustive and objective review. So i think weve had really the final word on many of these conspiracy theories, the fact that there was no stand down order, no political interference, no effort to politically spin the talking points. As the report points out, there were 21 intelligence assessments at the time that it began as a protest, those turned out to be wrong but there was no malice in getting it wrong so i hope this will guide the select committee. Well, do you think i think the administration is exonerated here . I think it is exonerated. Certainly not in the sense that it shows there was Adequate Security at the diplomatic facility. There wasnt. Theres been no contesting that. But in terms of whether there was an effort to cover up or spin or any of those conspiracies, they have been completely vindicated and i hope really the only interesting question here but it answers itself is why is this report being released on the friday before thanksgiving . Why is it released between developments of immigration and iran . So you think its a dump so no one would Pay Attention to it . Absolutely. Exactly. We are. We spent two years doing the definitive report and you want to trumpet it to the high heavens, not bury it on the friday before thanksgiving. But i tell you this, if the select Committee Comes up with a similar conclusion, it will release its report on Christmas Eve and i hope this will at least guide us into doing something productive in the select committee and keeping our focus on how we can improve security on what is the status of our Rapid Response team. And i understand that and youve said that the state Department Needs to do more to make sure theres not another benghazi. But let me get to this question of intelligence failure. Because this report says that there wasnt intelligence failure, there was just gaps in intelligence. But if there was an increased threat environment but no uptick in security, isnt that an intelligence failure . Gloria, what the report says is there were intelligence leads, that there were deteriorating security climate. In fact, the cia annex took additional precautions to make that facility more safe. Now, i think it is fair to ask the question, though, did the Intelligence Committee miss something. Right. In other words, there wasnt intelligence specific intelligence that there was going to be an attack. And in that sense, the agencies didnt fail to advise policy makers of an imminent threat but i think its fair to say or fair to ask, should we have seen this coming, should we have gathered intelligence . And i dont know that weve reached a definitive conclusion on that. Okay. Is there something that we missed that we should have seen. Let me ask you one last question on the political front of this. Youve heard Lindsey Graham. Hes clearly not satisfied. He thinks this report is, as he put it, a bunch of crap. Do you think that theres a political component to this, dare i say, about the potential candidacy of Hillary Clinton running the state department as a question of her leadership ability and is that legitimate . Well, i dont think theres any question theres a political dynamic to this. The only question really is, is there still any policy dynamic left . And i hope that there is. I hope that were not going to go through this select committee exercise and spend 3 million on a political stunt. So we need to try to keep our focus in a productive direction. Absolutely, if Hillary Clinton were not a likely candidate for president , i think this investigation would be over with a long time ago. And you have to ask, after the successive investigations led by the republicanled committees have reached the same conclusion, what is the basis for continuing to go forward . What are the Unanswered Questions still out there six months into the select committee we still dont have an investigative plan as democrats and its not because the chairman is unwilling to work with us. Hes been very willing to work with us. Its because i think the Committee Still doesnt know where its going and at a certain point you have to be willing to accept the answer that there was no conspiracy if you cant produce evidence of one. Congressman schiff, thank you for being with us. Theres another investigation going on and well have to see how that concludes. Thanks again. As the Republican Party struggles with Immigration Reform, were going to bring back senator Lindsey Graham and 2016 president ial candidate Rick Santorum to talk about how the republicans should respond to president obamas controversial executive orders. Republicans are steamed over president obamas executive order on immigration, but what exactly can they do about it . Were back with senator Lindsey Graham. Thanks again for sticking around. You are a supporter of Immigration Reform but you opposed the president s action last week very strongly. Youre an attorney. Do you think it was unconstitutional . Yes, maam. Its one thing to say as an executive agency, i dont have the money to prosecute everybody or to deport everybody so im going to rank them in order. Its another for the president of the United States to say, not only will i decide not to prosecute a group of people but i will affirmatively give you legal status. That is well beyond executive action. So if its unconstitutional, as youre saying, is it an Impeachable Offense . Right. Im not going to go down the road of impeaching the president. And let me tell you why. Immigration has been dogging the country since 2006. The president is frustrated. I have a solution that ive been supporting that is comprehensive that would allow legal status to the people in question. But you do it through a congressional action where you get the entire system fixed. His action does not secure the border. It doesnt fix a broken immigration system and it leaves people out in terms of the 11 million. So im not going to go down the impeachment road. Okay. Youre not. But youve heard the president say pass a bill. Weve counted, 11 times between thursday and friday, you passed a bill in the senate, you handed it to the house of representatives, the house of representatives right. Decided not to do anything on it. Its just sitting there. So doesnt the house have a responsibility here . Yes. Shame on us as republicans. Shame on us as republicans for having a body that cannot generate a solution to an issue that is national security, thats cultural and its economic. The senate has done this three times. I love my house colleagues but if you want you do . Doing nothing well, i do. You do . Im close to the people in the house but im disappointed in my party. Are we still the party of deportation . Is it still the position of the Republican Party that the 11 million must be driven out . Im in the camp of securing our borders first, fixing a broken legal immigration, so you cant cheat and get a job easy but as to the 11 million go ahead. Hasnt the president called your bluff here . Because hes sort of saying you guys, youve got to deal with the 11 million . No, maam. Hes doing a political he made a political decision. Hes not a very good leader. He made a political decision to try to divide the Republican Party and take the office of the presidency to a level no one else has gone. What he did is a dangerous precedent. On his own, he decided not to delay prosecution but affirmatively grant legal status to 5 million people. That should scare every american. If he has the power to do that, what could a republican do regarding laws they dont like . What the president has done has hurt the ability to bring us together. Hes created an executive action that i think flies in the face of checks and balances and he had two years of a democraticcontrolled house and senate with super majorities and never lifted a finger. I just said my party has failed. This president has failed miserably and has made it worse. I have a quick question for you. Are you thinking of running . Im thinking of trying to fix illegal immigration and replacing sequestration. Ill let you know if i think about running for president. Its the hardest thing one could ever do. You go through personal hell, youve got to raise a lot of money. Im nowhere near there. So is that a maybe, though . Its a maybe . Thats what it was. Okay. Its what i just said. Okay. I hope we can do something about immigration. Okay. Im so disappointed in my country, my party and my president. This is an unacceptable outcome. We all have a lot of blame but the president of the United States has taken this to a level and to my democratic colleagues, if you think this is okay for a democratic president to do what he did, then you just wait until a republican president goes down the road like this and you see how you feel. Senator Lindsey Graham, thank you so much for your time again this morning and ill come back at you on that president ial question, i promise. Okay . Thanks. And for another republican perspective, let me bring informer president ial candidate and pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum who also might run for the presidency. Am i correct about that . Im doing everything consistent with a run for 2016. I havent made any final decisions. It sounds more like a yes than Lindsey Graham. What lindsey said is important. Lewis gutierrez should be as upset with the president as i am and anybody who is concerned about the balance of power in washington, d. C. What the president did was open up pandora box for every president in the future to say, you know, congress, if youre not going to work with me, then im just going to go and not enforce the law and go beyond that. Not enforce the law and im going to actually create new law. So why not, then, if its that awful and sets that terrible of a precedent and is unconstitutional, why not either impeach or shut down the government or do something thats very strong in response . Look, i believe the republicans and i hope democrats would do something very strong in response to this. Like what . Well, obviously they are going to sue the president. They should sue the president on the supreme court. They should go right to it immediately because a lot of adverse things can now . Courts take a long time. Hopefully they can get an expedited hearing on something of this significance. S secondly, i think they should fund the congress. Youre not talking impeachment . I think you ratchet it up and look, i know some people have talked about censure. This is a serious matter. I know people say, well, this is politics and the other side does this and the other side does this. President Lindsey Graham could come in and say, i dont like the endangered species act, im not going to enforce it. There are hundreds of laws that democrats dont like that thats completely different in ordering the prosecution. What hes saying is, im not going to prosecute any of them and, in kt fact, im going to g further and grant them status that they would rather not have. That is rewriting law. That is a violation. And i dont understand i was a member of the senate and i was a member of the house. Youve just the president has just slapped the face every house saying we dont need you anymore. Heres the thing let me play for you something that the president said in las vegas on friday. By the way, he said hes not an emperor and didnt have the power to say this. I didnt be a solve government. I dont have a vote in congress, pass a bill. You dont need me to call a vote to pass a bill. Pass a bill. Every president has frustration with congress. I mean right, but the senate Lindsey Graham voted for a bill. He said shame on he said shame on us. Youve been around here long enough to know that things dont get done here just because the president snaps his fingers. Yeah, but it sat there for over a year. The president s had two years with complete control of the house and senate and never offered a bill and then for all of a sudden to express outrage, oh, my goodness, this is a controversial issue. Want to look at the last campaign . It was the third most run ads in the last campaign was antiimmigration ads and now republicans had a huge sweep with those candidates. The issue of amnesty it a red button issue. 75 of republicans as polled in the last election say that illegal emigrates working here should be deported. Isnt it political advantageous for you as a president ial candidate to say, forget about what the president is saying, its amnesty and we dont want it . Im concerned about the working men and women of this country. You have wages stagnating. You have Median Income falling in america. And who are the vast majority the president described them as people who are picking fruit and changing beds, i think he described them in his speech which, frankly, is rather demeaning. If a republican had said that, it would be slapped down. And the majority of the people, the vast majority of the people that the president is legalizing are unskilled workers. Youre now putting by the way, theres not a lot of unskilled workers growing opportunity in america and the president is putting close to 5 million, i would suspect, more unskilled workers in the workplace, plus an addition na 1. 1 every year coming into this country. Okay. Whats the republican plan . We need immigration control in this country. The last 20 years, we have had secure the border. Everyone agrees on securing the border. Im talking about people here and people that are scheduled to come. The bottom line is, we have more people in this country the last 20 years have been the largest wave of immigration than in the history of this country. There are more people who were not born here than any other time in history. We need more and working men and wom women are saying, how about us . How about those having to work two, three jobs, what about workforce participation . Because the jobs are not available for working men and women. Thats the problem and the president seems to not care about it. He said that in his speech in the las vegas. People have written me saying im worried about my job but he says i dont care about you. He says, i care more about these people who came here illegally. Why cant you care about both . You can care about both but there has to be an orderly process. We have to first care in my opinion, immigration policy should first and foremost care about americans and making sure america is healthy because when america is healthy, the rest of the world can be healthy. Senator santorum, thank you so much for being with us. Thank you. Up next, a tense ferguson, missouri, awaits the decision on Michael Brown shooting. Many thought that by today wed know whether or not a grand jury would indict Police OfficerDarren Wilson in the shooting death of Michael Brown. But nothing so far, absolutely nothing. The grand jury is set to rejoin on monday. Joining me is sunny hostin and Jeffrey Toobin who have been covering every inch of this story. What should we read into the fact that we dont have any decision from the grand jury . Pretty close to nothing. The legal system always has delays in it. And this has been a long investigation. The grand jury was apparently actually deliberating about whether to indict for a day or less. Thats not a very long time. These jurors know that this is a very highprofile investigation. Taking another day, taking another two days to make up their minds seems very appropriate, not surprising and i dont think it tells you one way or another which way they are leaning. Sunny, this grand jury has been conducted very differently from a lot of grand juries, im sure that youve been a part of, more information, more witnesses, more leaks, no recommended charges. The prosecuting attorney says, look, this is just an effort to be transparent yet the family of Michael Brown is very suspicious. Why is all of this unfolded this way . Yeah. Thats the question. Im going to read a little more into it than jeffrey is going to. You know, i think this grand jury, gloria, has been run in a way that is just so unusual that we can read into the fact that this grand jury cant reach a decision in a day because theyve been provided this overwhelming amount of evidence, hundreds of hours of evidence and that, quite frankly, is just never done, even in an officerinvolved shooting. Typically when a prosecutor believes in a case, when a prosecutor wants to indict a case, a prosecutor presents a very lean set of facts in front of a grand jury. The prosecutor never does this. Why is that done . To confuse them or just to make sure that it all got out there because its such a volatile situation . You know, i i tend to believe that it was done in an effort to sort of just dodge a prosecutors responsibility. A prosecutor doesnt even have to go to a grand jury, gloria. A prosecutor can make a charging decision on his or her own. A special prosecutor can make a decision on his or her own. Remember angela corey in the zimmerman case charged George Zimmerman without a grand jury. So the fact that this prosecutor is being more thorough by presenting this overwhelming amount of evidence, i just dont think its accurate. I think all of this evidence clearly has confused this jury, has overwhelmed the jury. Jeff, let me just add that this to that, which is that you have such a volatile situation. These people are not sequestered. So they go home, they watch tv, they see whats going on in ferguson. How does that not possibly affect the way they conduct themselves and the kind of decision they are going to make or the time they are taking to make it . Well, look, that obviously is a possibility. Its worth remembering that the vast majority of jurors, even in highprofile cases are not sequestered. Right. So this is not this is not something new. I do think there is a possibility here that you know, what the prosecuting attorney, mccullough was doing is passing the buck and throwing it all on the grand jury. I dont think that tells you for sure which way its going to come out but it certainly is not a profile and courage on the part of the prosecutor. It really does seem to be an attempt to pass the buck. Yeah. And no matter what happens, you can be sure that he will be second guessed again and again and again. And remember, just before we close, there is the possibility if there is no indictment here that the federal government. Exactly. Could bring charges but thats legally a lot more problematic. And the federal government is also investigating the Ferguson Police department as well on a separate investigation. Correct. Thanks sunny hostin and Jeffrey Toobin. Up next, we talk about president obama in ferguson. Is it harder for the nations first black president to deal with race . When ferguson first erupted after the killing of Michael Brown, some in the Africanamerican Community were disappointed with president obamas muted comments about the case. Race is an issue that americas first black president has had to tread carefully on. And joining me around the table to discuss all of this is jim wallis, president of the faithbased social justice organizati organization so journ ners and Sherrilyn Ifill and cornel west and lz granderson. Thank you all for being with me. Cornel, you went to ferguson a few months ago and said you wanted to turn ferguson into a big civil rights moment like birmingham was with dr. Martin luther king. If officer wilson is not indicted, what kind of a turning point is that going to be . Well, i think, one, we already see a turning point with the magnificent leader shift of the young people. They know the criminal Justice System is in a bismal failure and they know theres been black leadership that hasnt put the pressure on the obama administration. We need a federal prosecution. We need a serious federal investigation. There is one. But this is an investigation in the abstract. These precious young black men and women have been shot for the last six years. Theres not one speech, one federal prosecution, not acknowledgement that this is arbitrary police power and we wont put up with it. Its true for black and brown. Is there any way for members of the Minority Community in ferguson to accept that officer wilson might have acted in selfdefense . Lz . For me its i dont want to say should a Minority Community accept it. Uhhuh. Should the community of ferguson accept it. Right. The thing that really disturbed me over the past couple of weeks is seeing all of the white individuals who live in ferguson and around ferguson talk about whats going to happen with the verdict as if all of the statics that have now been revealed should have some sort of an emotional impact on you as well. What happened to the empathy thats going on in that area where youre looking over here going, okay, im not quite sure about this case but the arrest rates does not look right to me. Sure. The fact that the criminal Justice System seems to be riding on the back of fines and these fines are heavily waged on black citizens should have some impact on me. So im not so much focused solely on officer wilson and what happens to him, im more concerned about what happens to ferguson in general and why arent white citizens as upset what is going on with this criminal Justice System and not just this one particular case. And i think its unfair to say that africanamericans have rushed to judgment in this case. As in the case of Trayvon Martins killing, what africanamericans asked for was an arrest and youll recall in the Trayvon Martin case, the arrest of George Zimmerman would not have happened without protests from young people and the Community Coming out and demanding justice. So the community didnt come out the first day and say, convict Darren Wilson. They are saying, look at what weve seen. Isnt this enough to justify an arrest . So weve been waiting for the process. If you look at what has happened in the last six weeks, the community has been peacefully protesting and waiting for the legal system, for the grand jury. Jim, let me ask you about the National Leadership in all of this. Obviously were in the second term of our first black president. Our attorney general is also black. Is there anything that the president could have done in this situation to remedy the things people around this table are talking about that he has not done . The issue here is trust. What does it mean for a community not to trust their Law Enforcement . So Michael Brown is the issue. Ferguson is the issue. But theres ferguson all over the country. Michael brown all over the country. Every africanamerican dad that i know, every one, has the talk with their son about how to deal with being in the presence of a white police with a gun. Im a white dad. I look at this whole thing as a dad. I dont have that talk with my two white sons. If my son but what about the president . Yeah, he did say that. And i know that my 16yearold big, athletic son who, if he was walking in the same place. Right. As Trayvon Martin at the same time, everyone knows here he would have come back to me. Do people know what the president has wait a minute. This is the president of the United States. The biggest power he has is Law Enforcement power. I think people have failed to understand what he has marshalled through ferguson from the very beginning. So youre saying that what im saying is that what this president has done is unprecedented in terms of cops and the training happening right now of st. Louis Police Officers, the training officered to Ferguson CityPolice Officers rejected from the national government. Thats a difference between the actual power that the president can bring to the situation, including the two investigations, the individual investigation of wilson and all he needs to do is to give a speech and say, we are coming to an end of the era of Police Impunity of lack of accountability of police. Were going to send them to jail if they start killing our kids. So youre saying the president may do that but let me Say Something else. There is an ongoing federal investigation. Yes, thats true. Through the department of justice in ferguson and in investigating the Ferguson Police department and so you think just having the president doesnt want to compromise that investigation by saying anything. Lz, go ahead. Oh, i see. I think its a bit i think its a bit naive to think 400 years of work by a system can be eradicated by a good speech by im not talking about the president. Im talking about pressure from black people. Were talking about pressure from the president. Do i think president obama should have been more vocal in regards to these tep ype of cas . I think he has been as vocal as i would expect the president of the United States to be, not the president of black people. Not me. My question is why arent enough black leaders rallying around this message and being asked okay, guys, guys. Im going to have to leave it there. Were going to have to well, well come back we have to pay for the show so we will come back and talk about that and marion barry and the death of marion barry when we come back in a moment. I haits tough, but severive managed. Ease. But managing my symptoms was all i was doing. Awesome. Awesome awesome awesome awesome all awesome i love logistics. We wanted to spend a moment today talking about former washington d. C. Mayor marion barry who has just died at the age of 78. He was a controversial figure here in d. C. To be sure. He was busted on tape smoking crack cocaine and served six months in prison on a drug possession charge in the early 90s, but after his time behind bars, he had a comeback. He was reelected mayor, went on to represent washingtons poorest districts as a city councilman until his death. Cornell west, i want to start with you about your reaction to the death of marion barry . He was my dear brother. A great freedom fighter. He understood what our loo louisiana tee know brothers and sisters understand. You have to put pressure. Power concedes to no thing without a demand. It never will, it never did. He understood that and god bless his soul. We have to put pressure on this president. Tferguson has to move from a moment to a movement. A movement around racial policing. The criminal Justice System the dare pardisparities are so great. Its an issue or all of us. Im a Little League baseball coach and my kids teammates are black. They have a conversation with their dads that my white kids dont have. This is a wrong that has to be righted. Michael brown, sr. Seed this and i want to read what Michael Brown sr. Said. He said hurting others or destroying property is not the answer. No matter what the grand jury decides, i do not want my sons death to be in vain. I want it to lead to incredible change, positive change, change that makes the st. Louis region better for everyone. That expresses my hope, too. How do we make ferguson into a movement that changes this racialized criminal Justice System. Its about accountability. We talk we want the accountability for the individual Police Officers but theres a larger accountability. If you look at ferguson, probably nobody is sitting around this table can tell you the mayor of ferguson, any city councilperson, or the town manager who by the way hires the police chief, has the apilt bilo fire the police chief. You would know marion barry, de blasio in new york. You dont know any of the local leaders. Between the chief of police and the president of the United States, there are all of these elected officials who have gotten off the hook. Theyve been hiding out. You dont know that john shaw is the manager i get it, i get it. But it goes to his point about accountability. Yes, yes. The accountability is broader than for just the president or just this Police Officer. Its an accountability of American Leadership i want l. Z. To get the last word here. And weve been talking about marion barry, weve been talking about president obama. Two completely different types of politicians who book end the Civil Rights Movement i would say in many ways. Could president obama learn something from Marion Barrys activism . Well, i think we forget he had a life before he became president obama. Yeah. He was a marion barry, if you will, for the city of chicago. Oh, no. He was never the marion barry of chicago. Let me finish. Marion was a courageous brother would you allow me to finish. I know you have your issue with the president. What im saying is that man could have left that area with his pedigree and have gone on and made himself rich. Instead, he stayed on the south side of i agree with that. And helped those less fortunate. That doesnt make him marion barry. In that regard he was like a marion barry because he had other options and he chose to help people who were less fortunate and in for that he needs to be applauded for and he did that before he was president and hes doing it as president and i suspect he will do it after that. And youre going to get the last word on that. Thanks so much to our panel or being here today, cornell west, jim west, sharon eiffil and lz granderson. Well be right back. Big day . Ah, the usual.
