Views of the longtime Catholic School employee he was fired for being married to a woman. Youll meet her. Im michael smerconish. Welcome to the program. We begin with breaking news. The latest on the shootings in chattanooga. The fifth Navy Petty Officer identified by his family as Randolph Smith died this morning in chattanooga. Four Young Marines died at the scene. Heres the thing, my heartbreaks for the families of men who wore the uniform of our nation. And my prears go out to them. I want us to aggressively hunt and kill the perpetrators of this type of islamic terror. At the same time im troubled. Is terror on our shores the new norm . And what does that mean for us . It appears that once again a 20something inspired by his distorted view of islam has killed innocent americans. Must we get used to this . I just want us to maintain a sense of balance. They win when we overreact. When our need for basic safety is exceeded by measures likely to only make us feel more secure. In 2007 i remember reading a book called overblown by john muler. He argued that fear of flying after 9 11 caused more people to drive long distances, which led to traffic accidents that probably killed more people than 9 11 itself. He wrote this which is the greater threat terrorism or our reaction against it . A threat that is real but likely to prove to be of limited scope has been massively, perhaps even fansfully inflated to produce widespread and unjustified anxiety. This process has then led to wasteful even selfparodic expenditures and policy overreactions. When i read those words in 2007 i was not ready to accept them. They sounded defeatist. Now 14 years removed for 9 11 and with yet another incident they are making more sense to me. They describe the world in which we live. The point is we need to fight terror without succumbing to it. To continue this discussion i have the ideal person tom ridge, was the governor of pennsylvania on september 11. Then was tapped by george w. Bush to be the nations first secretary of Homeland Security. Joining me now is tom ridge, governor let me begin with a question of is a mansemanics. How do you refer to this that unfolded in chattanooga . I call it an Islamic Radical attack. It seems to be by my judgment inspired by isil so all the politically correct people may run around with either term but thats my belief and i just expressed it publicly. Do you think the administration is hindered in its fight against terrorism . And if so how . Theres no question about it. I watched and listened very carefully to president obamas very careful, articulation of his expression of deep sympathy of his commitment to the fbi to get to the bottom and try to determine all the facts, but frankly theres been a persistent and consistent pattern for the past sixplus years when initially these were called manmade attacks. Do you remember that . And failure to recognize the nature of the enemy, then you really put yourselves and jeopardize your ability to defeat the enemy. And i think thats clear not only here domestically but quite clear in the response to the ever growing response of terrorism in isil that the president refused to recognize as a global scourge. And he refuses to put his commander and chief hat on to deal with it directly. He would say it doesnt mean hes fighting any less of the forces of evil that bring this about, but he doesnt want to paint with a broad brush so as to inspire hatred against the u. S. In the Muslim Community where perhaps it doesnt exist. Well, i think i share that concern and belief with the president. But he is and you and i both know there are ways you can inoculate that impression. And theres no one better to inoculate it than the president of the United States. This is clearly not a condemnation of the men and women who worship the individuals that worship in the mosque. This is clearly not a condemnation of the billionplus muslims who live and pray in a very devout religion arounded the world. This is a condemnation of though who have been extreme in their interpretation of the koran and wrap their evil around the language of religion to justify it and clearly this president who understands the value of words can articulate that message clearly and persistently. He chooses not to do it and i guess i dont understand it and never will. I would like you to watch and listen to something that was said on friday. We have seen too much of this traffic. To me there are too many warning signs. The targets are identical to the targets called by isis to attack. So my judgment in my experience is that this was an isisinspired attack. Governor i guess the question is are we ever going to be able to catch a guy like this who was operating off the grid . I know there are reports of his father having appeared on a watchlist, but as the story is evolving thus far, theres no reason to believe the shooter in this instance had been on the minds of Law Enforcement . It is impossible in a country of 310 Million People to take someone listen i have read some of the reports about this individual fairly devout up until a couple months ago, his wrestling coach had a great deal of respect for him, his classmates had a great deal of respect for him. No apparent evidence around him saw evidence of his inclination or desire to commit these particular acts. So we are kidding ourselves if we believe that we can identify all these people in advance. And am i hearing from you the nations first secretary of Homeland Security get used to it. This is the new norm. Well, unfortunately you are hearing it from me. We are going to do everything we can to identify these individuals, but it is impossible to do so in this country. In spite of our best efforts. But were certainly not making our best efforts overseas to defeat and discredit those who have thrown this ideology out, who have used the social media to make it far more attractive than any other Global Terrorist Organization has ever done. And thats one of the concerns ive had, we dont have a commander in chief who has decided to take them on and defeat them and discredit them. This needs to be an arabled coalition to defeat them in iraq and in syria. Are you suggesting that young men in the position you were years ago, meaning when you served your country in vietnam, american men should be going over there to fight isis boots on the ground . Well, its pretty clear that isis brought the fight to american soldiers to the United States. Its pretty clear that that was their directive. Its pretty clear that this murder carried out in tennessee. And let me be clear, ive had enough friends who fought in iraq and afghanistan, brave young and women, who understand the nature of the mission. Who probably better understand it than a lot of people in the white house that this is a global scourge. And unless its defeated militarily the incidents that were talking about today will be more frequent. But this is taking the global scourge and reminding us the battlefield, remember the president didnt want boots on the ground. We had boots on the ground in tennessee. And isil is saying you dont have to defeat the enemy over there. There are those in the United States that wear Law Enforcement uniforms and military uniforms. If you cant come over here to defeat them defeat and kill those there. Do you worry theres a risk of overreaction . And i dont want to understate the significance of four marines losing their lives on the United States soil. I think its god awful but were having this conversation at a time when im looking at my cnn security pass and thinking about taking off my shoes at the airport. Thinking about the dogs below me in the building where im sitting in the subway system sniffing for bombs. And on and on and on. Do we have a tendency to overreact in the face of this type of catastrophe . Security is pretty heavy just about everywhere you go in this country. To your point, i think it is appropriate. We lament the loss of the lives as a barbaric and evil act. I dont mean we become immune to it but we have to remind ourselves that the threat of islamic terrorism is a global scourge and it is much more aggressive overseas not only here but u. S. Citizens elsewhere and western interests are of attack. Obviously the fbi and local Law Enforcement are doing everything they can. And it appears to me theres nothing anything else they could have done to identify this person in their midst. Governor ridge, stick around. On a much more pleasant subject you and i will have a conversation about one of our favorite guys. Pap papa bush. Well do that in a couple minutes. Coming up in the months leading up to the attack how did the gunman turn from an allamerican friendly kid to a killer . And while the other president ial candidates downplayed their wealth thats certainly not true for mr. Trump. But what in his financial background would he rather not talk about . And a beloved Catholic School employee fired because shes gay even though administrators knew she was married to a woman. Why now . He was a disciplined mixed martial arts fighter but that image was quickly shattered after his deadly rampage on thursday. Investigators belief there are several factors pointing to the shooting being terror. We are now learning the suspect spent much of his last year many the middle east and some close to him say the trip may have radicalized him. Now the fbi is doing all it can to gather more information on the alleged gunman combing through his recent emails, phone calls, Internet Usage and building a list of anyone with whom he was recently in contact. Well dig deeper, joining me is shawn henry, the former executive director of the fbi. Shawn, given what is now known, what do you find significant about his profile . Well, i think that the focus will be on the travel to the middle east. When you look at the investigation thats been done locally there in chattanooga, the interviews of friends and family members, people at the school in where he worked all very positive, well acclimated young men who appears to have been associated within the community. But after coming back from the middle east some stark change in his personality. I think as an investigator looking at this is where the fbi will focus and they will look at as well those communications to try to get a better understanding of that circle of people who may have influenced him. He seems to have a lot in common with Dzhokhar Tsarnaev middle class, educated athlete, teachers praised, people seemingly shocked it could have been this guy. I worry that youre never going to be able to find that kind of a guy in advance unless they have a social profile. Yeah michael, thats a great point. I thought the same thing. You looked at tsarnaev coming back after traveling internationally prior to the event in boston. What the fbi needs to focus on Going Forward is a better communication with the public. I think the bureau has a tremendous relationship. When i was the assistant director in charge of the Washington Field office i went at the end of ramadan to our dinner at the mosque. I was invited in and sat with the leaders there. It was a time of celebration. Those people the community there is certainly against this. And is in a position to potentially identify somebody who might be making violent statements or acting abnormally particularly when coming back from a trip like this where they may have become radicalized during the course of that event. April 20 he was arrested for a dui. Apparently he smelled of pot and had a residue on his face that may have suggested he inhaled something, which makes me wonder how devout was he really . Yeah again, looking at the community and people who know him, if they see abnormal behavior particularly after a particular event or some interaction with somebody that is the type of opportunity where somebody can intervene. Not necessarily bringing all of that to the Law Enforcement attention, but just sitting down to engage with that person yourself. When you see someone acting abnormally do they need help . Are they troubled . Did something occur in their life to create a change . And it is a potential threat. So that private sector side for the ability for citizens and the community to come together to intervene is really really important. When the fbi is unable to identify people who pose a specific threat is. Thats not going to happen with 100 certainty, michael. Shawn, you may have not heard my commentary is this the new norm . Do americans need to get used to the idea of terror on our shores . I think thats right. The ad vent of the internet the proliferation of social media, the ability for radical fundamentalists to be able to reach out from anywhere on the globe into peoples living rooms, into their bedrooms where they can access this rhetoric where they get this constant banrage, this daily pummeling of information on a regular basis. And you never know what may cause them to act. If they have a bad day or a dispute at work and finally hear something that causes them to take up arms and harm american citizens i think we are in a new facephase in our history and something well have to deal with as americans for a long long time. Final question do politicians get tonguetied as to what to call this . Does the label they affix to a tragedy like this matter to a guy is like you in Law Enforcement . Does it have an impact as to how we fight it . I think to the average citizen it probably doesnt. From the Law Enforcement perspective, i think it is important to categorize things only because it helps when youre doing an assessment so for example, in this particular case i know theres been some reference to this being domestic terrorism. This is not domestic terrorism. If anything the bureau is looking at international terrorism. The Term International versus domestic is not where it occurs but who inspired i. So im sure the bureau is looking at this to be isis inspired. His travel is a key piece here and they will look at this as international. The way it is determined by the fbi is by starting to look for patterns that helps to assess where you may want to look for additional leads. Good information. Thank you for delivering it. Thank you. Coming up donald trump surprises everyone by filing his financial statement. But his claims keep inflating. What can we believe . Ill talk to someone who has covered mr. Trump for decades. And well meet the veteran educator fired for being married. All that when we come back. Ep at night, and stay awake during the day. This is called non24. Learn more by calling 8448242424. I have assets that are of the most respected, 9,240,000,000. The good news is how much do i have . 10 billion. If donald trump is to be believed his net worth has gone up another billion. But how accurate are the claims . Many people believe trump will quit the race before he revealed his tightly held financial information. This month he said he filed with the federal election commission. Unsurprisingly his twopage press release belittles the process as quote, not designed for a man of mr. Trumps massive wealth. And it proudly proclaims in all capital letter that is mr. Trumps net worth is in excess of 10 billion. Are his numbers real . Forbes recently did the math and said his net worth was 4 billion. Thats a pretty big discrepancy. Here is someone who has covered donald trump for the last 30 years and recently wrote this question 20 questions for donald trump. Professor david cay johnston. Thanks for being here. So hes making money. Hes already made a billion dollars in the time since he announced his candidacy. How credible is that . Well, with nine major companies, nbc, univision and others have cut you loose, hard to believe that increased your net worth. And Donald Trumps statement didnt show liabilities. Donald in the past has had periods where he owed more than his assets. So we dont know what his net worth is. I think members of the public dont comprehend this. I was in chicago two weeks ago. In the course of driving through downtown chicago, theres this enormous building em blazened with trump across it. Im wondering if some go by a building and think, my god, donald trump owns that outright. Speak to the misperception. Donalds properties are largely heavily leveraged. He once persuaded one of the banks not to file a mortgage against one of his properties that i revealed years ago. Some of the buildings he only licenses his name and has a small sliver of ownership in them. Some things he owns outright. And we dont know what in the property he outfarmed to other people. So it is very misleading because his name is on the building its huge. Many of the businesses have been failures. The Casino Company went through bankruptcy three times. The trump shuttle failed. Lots of very successful Business People often have business failures but according to donald everything is a success. But he is really rich. Without doubt, donald is an extremely wealthy man. But to live the lifestyle he has doesnt require 10 billion. It could be much lower but we dont know. Well drill down the example of his worth. With regard to the apprentice, he was paid 213 million for several seasons. Thats not a bad day at the office. Mr. Trump announced he signed a deal for 130 million. And nbc, his employer issued a statement saying those numbers are way, way out of bounds. Its nowhere near that kind of money. And donald testified under oath that he inflates the numbers he tells people. Hes admitteded to this under oath. So the you have to understand that donald puts to it a number that you cant rely on. In regard to illegal immigration. As a businessman, has he practiced what he has preached . No. And the most famous example is when he tore down trump tower. There were 12 union guys in hard hats and 150 illegally here polish men without hard hats. He paid them less than 5 an hour and avoided safety inspections during that period. And was found by the judge to conspire with conspiracy to cheat the workers without pay. Recently in the new york times, your former employer where you won a pulitzer prize, two front page stories about marco rubio. One had to deal with the way in which he runs his own personal finances. Another that deviled into his driving record. We learned since 1977 he and his wife have racked up 17 driving offenses. By the way, 13 were hers 4 were his. None of that kind of scrutiny has been applied to the Business Practices of mr. Trump. I wonder why as a journalism question when that happens, will he be able to withstand that level of scrutiny with regard to his Business Practices . Well, donald is very good at bullying news organizations and threatening people. Did he ever threaten you . Yes. Ive been romances to being told im the most awful person in the world. And he does to government officials. Especially if you write about how donald doesnt pay people he owes money to or tries to avoid paying. I think if youre running for president , we should thoroughly back who you are. No i dont think donald will survive that. Because when donald built trump tower, his personal pilot was convicted of drugs. His sister she reused herself from it but donald has had a lot of unsavory relationships that needs to be examined in terms of his past. If we are going to pick a president , im rich worth 10 billion, then Warren Buffett and then sheldon gates. Lets make sheldon president. He clearly thinks the size of ones wallet aught to determine their thickness for wallet. Quick question is he a generous guy . No he hasnt put a penny into his own foundation since 2006. And then most of the money became the World Wrestling foundation foundation. From Eric Schneiderman that is still pending . Schneiderman said it was an illegal institution. Trump said 35,000, ill show up. He never showed up. They copied the list. I cant wait so see what he called you on twitter. Youll be in a good company with me. The equal Opportunity Commission ordered the basis of Sexual Orientation is illegal under federal law. The ruling is not binding on federal courts but might benefit employees fired for being gay. In my hometown of philadelphia one such case right now is the source of great controversy. It certainly caught my eye as a cafeteria catholic. Margie winters was the director at walter mercy economy. A title held since 2007 about as long as she was married to her wife andrea. But her tenure with the school was ended after parents complained to the school and the philadelphia archdiocese. Winters never tried covering up who she is or who she is married to. And that has many asking well, why now . And why the school hired her in the first place . Joining me now is margie winters and her wife andrea. First of all, people may be surprised up until this development, you dont have a legal leg to stand on in challenging your termination. Thats right, i dont. And you acknowledge that . Yes. So you are not here to fight legally for your job but just want your story told. Right. We just want to raise awareness of this and in particular the catholic community. I have talked about your plight on the radio. And extensively a number want to know why you began that job and you knew that the Church Teachings were at odds with your marriage. Well, my answer would be why wouldnt i . Well well the mercy Catholic School has been a great place for me to express my faith and help the children learn about theirs. Was there ever conflict in the way you approached your job and your own marriage . And if so how did you resolve those issues . There was never a conflict with my job. In my job i think i approached it as presenting the catholic faith as it is. The conflict is with the understanding of teachings of the church. And for me its a conflict of vision. Of who we are as a church. If you had been an activist for planned parenthood and held the same position you could understand given the prolife position of the church how they wouldnt want you in that role. Is this the same kind of circumstance . I dont think so. Because i think the marriage issue goes to who i am as a person and who god made me as. So i dont think its the same. I was surprised, andrea with you have appealed to the pope. I always wondered, how do you address a let tore the pope . We wondered that too, and had to do research. Any reply from the pontiff . Not yet. He said things recently that would seem supportive of a union like this. Oh absolutely. He has reached out to the gay and lesbian community. And more importantly, hes a pastoral pope. He showed he really wants to get to know the people that he shepherds. And thats really all were asking to get to know us. Let us tell you our story. I was you already heard me describe myself as a cafeteria catholic. Im taking the jello and rejecting the turkey you know what that is about. Im surprised by the depth of your faith in light of this. That this hadnt challenged your catholic faith at all. On the contrary. Its made it even deeper. How . I love this church. And i think this has made me realize how much i want to fight for it. Because there are some that want to exclude me from the faith. And i dont want to be excluded. But by Church Teaching and the catechism, this is not something that the church condones. It is not something that the hierarchy of the Current Church condones but i think when christ walked the earth, he railed against the hierarchy for trying to exclude people by using the laws of the faith at that time to exclude people. If thats not happening now, i dont know what else this is. Margie i can attest to the fact that at home in philadelphia you have been the recipient of tremendous support. Can you summarize the sediment at the school among the parents . I think people are just in disbelief. And, in particular because i think it goes against who they are. This community has claimed mercy and openness trust, hospitality. And they are wondering, they are struggling with the tension between the decision and who we are. Am i right in saying that when you were hired you made clear that you were married. And the principal who hired you knew that and it was fine. And it was fine yes. And there was a change in the leadership of the school . Yes. But that had nothing to do with this. The decision really or the conflict came when a parent complained about this. How many beefed . One . One parent actually i think two as far as im aware. And one last thing thats important, you werent fired by the average diocese. This was a public Catholic School but the average bishop weighed in on your determination. Yes, he has. The pope comes here in september. Are you going to make a play to his attention in. We are. We hope to. I think if he hears our story hell want to sit down to talk to us. Thank you both for being here. Youre welcome. Now to the flip side its undeniable that Public Perception of same sex marriage recently shifted. But the Catholic Churchs stance has not. So winters firing doesnt come as a surprise to many, including the president of the Catholic League who has an oped out this morning about her firing. Joining me now is bill donahue. Bill i have to ask, the jesus question would he be cool with the termination of this educator . Oh absolutely. Remember what jesus did with the money changes . He took out his whip and said get out. You cannot come into a voluntary organization i dont care if it is a catholic protestant jewish doesnt make any difference knowing full well what their structures are and deceitfully say im going to stay there and park myself there. By the way, the pope never said let me direct this mike the pope never said anything even close to acknowledging and sanctioning gay marriage. Never. Wait a minute if someone is gay who searches for the lord and has good will who am i to judge in arent you judging . He made a judgment didnt he . When he said im not going to judge. Come on hes your guy. He speaks i know that. And he speaks for me on that. What hes saying is hes not talking about homosexuality. Hes not talking about marriage. Hes simply saying something which is hardly unremarkable which the previous popes have all accepted. If you happen to be gay, you are deserving of equal dignity as a child of god as if you were straight. Now theres a profound difference between being gay and straight and two guys saying im going to get married. We took our ideas from jews. If you were at an Orthodox Jewish school or Muslim School and said im the director of religious education but dont really care for islamic changes and dont care for generic changes when it comes to marriage what would they do . Wouldnt they throw you out and this wouldnt be an issue for those folks . Thats not what im hearing from these women. To the contrary they are the real embodiment of catholicism. This is not what the Catholic Church teaches. Let me show you something. I have a colleague at home in philadelphia. Her name is ronnie palonesky who wrote this attention all you divorced remarried, pillpopping viagrachewing, infertility busting, masturbating and unmarried fornicating employees employees. Doesnt she have a point . No. We are talking about many somebody to make a public statement. Everybody who knew she was living in violation of the Catholic Churchs teachings, it is not a gray area. You either accept the teachings or dont. Its a voluntary organization. If i joined a Vegetarian Society and became an officer and i finally said you guys aught to lighten up. What is wrong with having a hot dog at a ball game . They would show me the gate. Thats what should happen at any private institution. You know the lawyer in me loves the analogy. So ill play along. If im a vegan and work at mcdonalds but make a hell of a burger should i nonetheless be fired when they say, oh my god, smerconish is a vegan. Isnt the most important thing she was competent in her job and that her marriage at home didnt intrude on the way i mean lets cut to the chase, are you worried shes going to teach kids to be a lesbian . Yeah yeah yeah. Look you can have a catholic teacher arguably according to this insanity who belonged to the clan but only on weekends. We dont advertise that i belong to the clan but once in a while i hang out with the imperial wizards and teach very good math. This is not a math teacher but the teacher of religionus education and she lost. Shes been fired for doing something now legal according to the Supreme Court of the United States. Marriage is a sacrament in the Catholic Church. We dont care what the Civil Society says. Its a sacrament. Its entirely different. We dont want the state telling the church what to do. The pontiff is coming to philadelphia and my guest before you, they say they will make this an issue upon his arrival. You heard that one of them has written to his holiness. What do you think, if anything hell do with this issue . I think that hes engaged in outreach in pace storm changes and stylistic changes. But in terms of changing doctrine hes referred to the idea of garksy marriage as the work of the devil. Why dont people read what he has said. I think i read accurately what he said on this, he said things in contradiction. I dont think time is on your side with this argument. You must know that. I dont really care. Im not engaged in a popularity contest. Im in gauge of the truth of the Catholic Church and thats it. Coming up bush 41 on the mend after an accident in his neck. Tom ritu served under president bush and voted for the ada. Was it a canon controversial vote at the time . I think it truly shows the value of the country coming together around a common commitment to a common cause. We needed the leadership. Many president s had been talking about it. He is the first one that embraced it and committed his administration to get it done. This Sweeping Change in civil rights legislation, ending discrimination insisting that people have access people with disabilities have access to public and private buildings and reasonable accommodations at the work place. He is such a remarkable individual. I can remember being an 18yearold pennsylvania in 1980 when he was running for president. A president we wont have to train which was a reflection of his remarkable biography up until that time. Still to come was his tenure as vicepresident for eight years and then president for four. Thats one of the reasons, candidly michael, i got involved. A little clip had a conversation with president obama. I have a great deal of affection for the man. This was a man disestined to be president. He has Public Service in his dna, bringing an agile mind an a human heart. His legacy is strong and this particular piece of legislation, in spite of all the other things he did, helping dismantle the soviet even soviet union, among his most significant accomplishments, and he admitted himself, was the americans with disabilities act.
