Welcome to our viewers here and around the world. I am wolf blitzer. This is the situation room. We are following breaking news on the hurricane emergency in the carolinas as Disaster Relief is beginning in the bahamas. A new forecast shows dorians eye passing 45 miles off myrtle beach, South Carolina. It is hammering the coast with 105 Miles Per Hour winds, unleashing destructive tornadoes as well. The streets of charleston are flooded, with up to 15 inches of rain forecast for the carolinas, and storm surge up to 7 feet high. In the bahamas tonight, more than 100 people rescued on islands decimated by dorian, but thousands are in dire straights now, without homes or safe living conditions, in urgent need of shelter, food, water. Our correspondents, experts and other guests are standing biy a we cover this story. Martin savidge is in South Carolina. Dorian is miles from myrtle beach. Reporter wolf, conditions here continue to deteriorate in myrtle beach. It was tornadoes that was the threat this morning, now it is just sheer raw force of dorian herself, now just off the coast and passing. A curfew going into effect at 7 00 p. M. An hour from now, going until 7 00 a. M. In many areas in the county. This is a storm that will make it one very difficult night. Tonight, Hurricane Dorian hammering the carolina coast with a dangerous possibility of landfall in the coming hours. Nearly a quarter million homes and businesses across georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina already lost power. Dorians winds lashing South Carolina all day, flooding low lying streets, dragging down more than 100 trees. Forecasters say more than a foot of rain could fall in some parts of the state. Art perry rode out the storm on nearby james island. This is the third one in three years, you dont get used to it, you learn to adapt to it. Once youre in it, youre in it. We went ahead and it was risk or reward, knew what we were getting into. Reporter reports of spinoff tornadoes causing havoc. You hear the noise, sounds like a train in a sense, went to the window to see what was going on, lot of wind, the trees were about sideways. Reporter adam and his family were awakened at 4 00 in the morning by strong winds. The house wasnt damaged but it made him think of evacuating his family. The mayor of myrtle beach had this advice for residents in their homes. Put safety first. If you can stay at home, please stay inside. This is not the time to try to get a great photo op, it is too dangerous. Reporter tornadoes struck in North Carolina, this one touching out on emerald isle. Damaging several homes. Hurricane dorian arrived in North Carolina, with wind, rain, tornadoes lashing our state. Reporter dorian continues to move north, next aiming at North Carolina, where they warn residents not to take chances. We are feeling the storms force, but it has only started. We have a long night ahead of us. Everyone needs to stay in a safe place and off the roads until the storm passes. I think we lost our connection with martin savidge. Well get back to him. You can see the awful situation thats developing right now. Speaking of awful, a disaster in the bahamas. Tonight, hurricane survivors are sharing Horror Stories what they endured as dorian tore into their homes and lives. Paula newton is in nassau, after spending time in an obliterated areas. You have spoken to survivors. Reporter wolf, just imagine what the u. S. Is going through now with Hurricane Dorian, the people i spoke to went through category five, wolf. They told me Hurricane Dorian was a storm that broke all the rules when it came to this. They never thought they would see a storm that strong. They say theyre still traumatized by everything they saw, cannot believe they survived it, and obviously mourning those who didnt. Wolf, take a look. It is so much worse than they had feared. The abaco islands are scarred by mass destruction, home after home, entire rooftops blown away, debris scattered in unrecognizable heaps. Boats tossed like confetti. How could anyone survive this. It is okay. Are you okay . Youre okay. Youre okay. Youre going to be okay. I know. Reporter we arrived by helicopter, with billy aubry, embracing his wife shawna after days of not knowing if she was dead or alive. She hunkered down in their seaside home until the roof blew off, they struggled to find anything still standing. This is what kept you alive. This little room. We came in, hunkered down. Shawna was on the ground, crying. I was hysterical. What did it sound like at the time . It was loud. There was a lot of crashing. I remember all of the crashing and banging and whirling. Stuff we thought was coming through the wall. Reporter so many in the abaco islands lived through hours that resemble a horror movie, exposed to winds that topped 250 Miles Per Hour, like tornadoes touching down every minute. Words cant describe it. I dont wish it on nobody. Nobody has words to describe it. You could never categorize this, never. It was like atomic bomb went off. Reporter residents tell me their Little Island paradise is unrecognizable even to them. Theyre resourceful and self reliant, they say, but they could have never imagined a storm as powerful as dorian. You know, theres no better way to describe to you the force of Hurricane Dorian to be right here where people rode out the storm in their living rooms, dining rooms. Look at this. The roof blew off the house here, the entire kitchen came down. Their refrigerator ended up here on the ground. The living room and dining room furniture is strewn all over. People describe these things being tossed around the island like projectiles. They all cowarred, any way to take shelter. There are beginnings of recovery, medical attention, private helicopters to take out the sick and elderly, young families. Im sure it will never be the same again. But i mean, the people are strong here, were going to try to do our best to rebuild the best way we can. We know it will never be the same. Reporter this is a storm of biblical proportions, and they say yes, they worry it will take a miracle to recover from it all. Quite a task, you know, wolf, they want to recover, want to be resilient, when you look at infrastructure damaged a to z, they have absolutely nothing, they wonder where to begin. Were at the staging area in nassau where aid is going out. The island we were on had not seen any government aid. We say resourceful people, they called contacts to get private helicopters out, got some sick and wounded out of the island. Everyone else is waiting for what comes next. What theyre really worried about are health conditions. They have food and water for now, they wonder whats next when it comes to disease, god forbid if a lot of bodies that they tell me they are seeing in place that havent been recovered, theyre worrying about things like cholera, a Monumental Task for the government. Those residents told me they want to see the government helped, they want to see a global effort, the United States is certainly here, u. S. Coast guard is flying around, there are u. S. Ships off the coast, everybody trying to forward deploy all that aid, trying to help people get back on their feet. Heartbreaking, amazing reporting from you and the team. Paula newton on the ground. Thank you very much for that report. Joining us now, general counsel here in washington, theo neely. Thanks for coming in. Deepest condolences to you and all of the people of the bahamas. Official death toll is 20. But as you heard from paula, that could go up dramatically. Sadly those numbers probably will go up. Last count we heard was 23. Minister of health in the bahamas indicated the number now reached 23. 23. Thats the official thats the official according to minister of health. What about the people that are still unaccounted for or missing . So thats why the search and rescue team is in place, going door to door, house to house, making sure before we give nu s numbers, we have to be sensitive to families until we release other numbers. Are people trapped in homes . Im not sure at this point. We know the Prime Minister went to grand bahama yesterday for evaluation, still doing assessments on the ground. We know people are in need, were getting aid to them quick as we can. Who is helping you, the bahamas, now in dealing with this . Were quite happy and pleased with the international support, were thankful to the United States and United Kingdom is already in there, supporting us, have teams on the ground, helping us. United states has a team helping with search and rescue as well. Paula newton, you heard her dramatic account, she spent 24 hours because she couldnt get out of there. She said she hasnt seen any official government rescue operations under way, has seen individuals volunteering, doing the best to help neighbors, friends, but hasnt seen the Government People on the ground. Certainly we know the u. S. Coast guard has been helping the government, they started search and rescue in abaco since two days ago, so they certainly are on the ground. In grand bahama, it was stationary, moving at 1 mile per hour, there for 40 hours. Took awhile to get in there. Couldnt get in until the storm passed. So we know the damage is very significant and worse than we probably predict because the storm, the hurricane was there so long. Just sat there a long time. Wasnt moving as you correctly point out. And we have seen the pictures, the destruction, the airport, all of the homes. O what are the urgent needs . Other than search and rescue, people need water, tents, im getting messages where people only have the clothes on their back as theyve lost everything. We havent seen a hurricane like this before as the Prime Minister indicated and pointed out. It is the worst our country has ever seen. To imagine having that hurricane there for 40 hours, even if it is moving quickly, would be the worst we have seen. Having it stationary made it worse. We learn lessons from the disasters. A mistake not to evacuate those people in advance . We did have evacuation plans in place, and evacuations for certain islands. Some persons chose not to evacuate. Thats something we have to look to in the future. No mandatory evacuation . Mandatory evacuations for some keys in the abacos, persons were told to evacuate, unfortunately some didnt. One thing we need to point out, wolf, these are two major islands in the bahamas. The second and third populated islands of the country. So obviously thats putting a damper on the economy and seeking all of the International Help we can get. The Prime Minister spoke with the president last night. Is he satisfied, the Prime Minister, with u. S. Support right now, with u. S. Assistance . Very pleased with the outcome of all international assistance, particularly the United States. We have a relationship that goes back so many years, based on proximity, were next to the United States, 15 miles off the coast. Were working closely. Youre going to need billions and billions of dollars. Where is that money going to come from . We had support from United Kingdom, u. N. , Prime Minister trudeau lent assistance. Smaller island nations may lend assistance, dominique, barbados, sa st. Lucia. Were getting support from small islands and large ones at well. And we remind people were open for tourism. These are two islands. Nassau is not effected, there are many areas in the bahamas to still vacation. Tourism is an important part of your economy. Airports are open . People can get in . Airports on all other islands are open. Still plan your vacations. Call hotels before you go, thats the message were telling people. As you stated, we are a tourism economy, now more than ever, do your tourism in the rest of the country. We have so many islands to choose from, if you want to help and volunteer, these are the two islands we need you to help. A lot of people want to volunteer and help. Good luck to you and all of the people in the bahamas. A beautiful place. Been there several times. Absolutely. Hopefully youll recover. We will. Thank you very much. Lets get the newest forecast just in on Hurricane Dorian. Our meteorologist, jennifer grey, is in the cnn Severe Weather center. Dorian is close to the carolina close. Will it make landfall . Thats the Million Dollar question, wolf. Were not sure. It is paralleling the coast now. About 45 miles south of myrtle beach, and continuing that northeast journey. It could make landfall across North Carolina, but theres no guarantee. It will be awfully close. We have to wait and see. It will be during the overnight tonight into tomorrow possibly. Winds of 110 Miles Per Hour, a solid category two storm with 125 Miles Per Hour gusts moving to the northeast about 8 Miles Per Hour. The storm surge threat is still very real. We have a storm surge threat, wind threat, rain threat, and tornado threat with this. 4 to 7 feet possible with the storm surge. As we time this out, it will be around moorehead city, maybe past there by 7 00 tomorrow morning, making its way offshore by noon, effecting hatteras and dumping rain in these locations. Be on the lookout for tornadoes. Toer tornado watches are in effect. You can see the rain coming on shore. Thats where were seeing tornado warnings. A lot of rain falling, and of course before that center approaches the area, youre getting a surge of water and thats where were getting storm surge. Jennifer, thanks for the update. Jennifer grey reporting for us. Just ahead. Myrtle beach declares an emergency as dorian is thrashing the carolinas. Going to check with a city official on damage and danger right now. Brian todd is there for us. Whats the situation on the ground as dorian moves further up the coast . Reporter wolf, i am going to show you three views down three streets to show you the adversity that theyre dealing with. A vehicle comes toward us here. This street flooded all day. It was flooded worse during the peak tide of 1 00 a. M. And 1 00 p. M. But still threatening homes and buildings all day long. Now im coming here and show you whats going on. Whi i just got an update from the mayors office. They closed 137 roads in charleston. Thats the updated number. Theyre still going around and assessing. Down here, you have a cherry picker who for the past several hours is trying to remove parts of a large tree that fell on a series of power lines down there. He will be at it i am sure several more hours because that was a very, very large tree, and this street was flooded as well earlier. You pivot here, this was i showed you last hour, magnolia tree here that fell and took down, almost took down two power poles. Theyre now leaning dangerously toward homes that were on that side of the street. But the magnolia tree is down over power lines. Wolf, we were told by the mayors office, they had to do two rescues, one from a home where a tree fell on it, the other a water rescue. Those people turned out to be okay. No lifethreatening injuries. Wolf, one thing i heard, new england is getting a Tropical Storm warning from the storm for saturday, and when you think about that, the power, the duration, destruction, path of the storm really like no other hurricane we have seen in recent years, and weve seen a lot of terrible hurricanes in recent years. We certainly have. Brian todd reporting. Thank you. Lets update the just declared emergency in myrtle beach, South Carolina. The city manager, John Peterson is on the phone with us. Mr. Peterson, thank you for joining us. What are the conditions like now . It is raining pretty hard and winds are definitely gusty. This morning started rocky, we had a lot of hard rain, winds picks up more. We had some tornado activity in the morning, since then it calmed down considerably. Were in fairly good shape right now. What are the biggest risks now, potentially any risk to life . I dont believe we have any risk to life. We have some risk to obviously to the beach itself. So far were checking it, were cautiously optimistic, we havent had a lot of beach erosion. We have some minor structural damage and a little roadway flooding but i dont believe we have anything that i would put in the lifethreatening category. Thats encouraging to hear. Of course, parts of your county were put under mandatory evacuation order. What percentage of people do you believe actually complied with that order . In the city of myrtle beach itself, the area that was effected was only about the eastern most quarter mile, along the ocean front itself. Certainly almost all tourists that were in the highrise hotels we have in that stretch heeded the evacuation, most of them, required by the hotel. A good portion, as many as half the residents in the area. We have relatively few residents that are actually there. Better to be safe than sorry. Thanks, mr. Peterson, for that update. Good luck to you and the folks in myrtle beach. Thank you very much. All right. Breaking news continues next. Hurricane dorian is battering the carolinas. New efforts to defend President Trumps incorrect warning about the danger dorian posed to alabama. Our chief White House Correspondent jim acosta has the latest for us. Jim, a top trump adviser is coming to the president s defense. Reporter thats right, wolf. White house officials are digging in their heels over President Trumps use of altered map to justify false statements that Hurricane Dorian posed a threat to alabama. The white house put out a carefully worded statement saying his comments were based on briefings from officials, aides wont say if it was mr. Trump that changed the map in whats become a game of cones for the president. Leading what may become an indelible mark on the trump presidency, it was hardly a master stroke. Now the white house is dragging its feet, admitting who altered the weather map held up by the president in the oval office, false falsely showing alabama in the path of the hurricane. That was the original chart, and you see it was going to hit not only florida but georgia, it was going toward the gulf. That was what was originally projected. Reporter the president defying he was right, alabama was going to be hit or grazed and Hurricane Dorian took a different path along the east coast. This tweet from mr. Trump, this was the original projected path in the early stages. You can see almost all models predicted it to go through florida, hitting georgia and alabama. But hold on. Zoom in on that spaghetti lined map. It is from august 28th, four days before the tweet that got the president in trouble in the first place, when he said on sunday in addition to florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, georgia and alabama will most likely be hit. May get a little piece of a great place, called alabama. Alabama could even be in for some strong winds. Reporter but thats not true. Contrast what the president said sunday with this map provided by noaa which shows at that moment the storm was no where near alabama. I know alabama was in the original forecast, they thought it would get it as a piece of it. Reporter sources tell cnn the map was altered before he presented it to the public. White house aides know who did it, a problem for the president s team, as mr. Trump has already said he doesnt know what happened. The map you used today, looks like it was drawn on with a sharpie. I dont know, i dont know. Reporter and as a fox news meteorologist noted, it is violation of law to falsify a Weather Service forecast. Democrats are pouncing. I feel sorry for the president. I dont know he felt it necessary to pull out a sharpie, no matter how you cut it, this is an unbelievably sad state of affairs. The alabama blunder comes as the president is diverting funds from florida to pay for the border wall, including money designated to rebuild the air force base hit by hurricane michael. Mr. Trump pledged he was coming to their rescue. I have just come from a stop at Tindall Air Force base where i saw the devastating effects of that category 5 hurricane. Category 5. Never heard about category 5s before. So were rebuilding the whole place and doing the job. Reporter just in the last hour, Homeland Security and counterterrorism adviser peter brown released a statement on the altered map. Heres a portion of it on screen. Says while speaking to the president sundayed 1st, the president addressed Hurricane Dorian and its potential impact on multiple states, including alabama. The president s comments were based on the Hurricane Dorian briefing, which included the possibility of Tropical Storm force winds in southeastern alabama. But wolf, we should point out, information from noaa, from the maps, the Atmospheric Agency show that during the same time frame, there was only 5 to 10 chance of Tropical Storm force winds in the same corner of southeastern alabama, wolf, and getting all of that to the side, putting that to the side, should also be noted the statement doesnt say who drew on the map. The white house appears to be drawing a line around that information, wolf. Shortly after he made the statement about alabama, the governors own national Weather Service issued a correction saying alabama faces no threat whatsoever. Reporter thats right. Jim acosta. Thank you. Theres a lot we need to discuss. Experts and analysts are here. Well have a serious conversation about this when we come back. So shop now we are following Hurricane Dorian, lashing out at the carolinas now as it kurchurns u the eastern seaboard. The Homeland Security adviser at the white house put out a statement offering new defense for the false warning about the storm threat to alabama and the country is facing Serious Problems as the hurricane moves up the atlantic coast, but the president is still tweeting over and over and over again about the outdated forecasts involving a threat which never really existed to alabama. He politicized the national Weather Service, wolf, this would be comical if this wasnt reality playing out. When the first tweet came out, his first initial tweet mentioning alabama in the path of the storm over the weekend, people chuckled and moved on. No one would be talking about this if he were not so persistent, having dug his heels in. It is not difficult to say i made initial error. Lets focus on the actual path of the storm, not to mention all of the people facing destruction that we have seen play out through the bahamas. If he had been talking about relief that needs to be given and relief the u. S. Is providing to the bahamas and people in the path of the storm, that would be something that would be helpful as opposed to constantly talking about something that no one really cares about, but it is emblematic of the administration and this president who just cant admit when he is wrong. Sounds trivial, but think what would happen if we face military action that needs to be taken in iran or Missile Launch from north korea. We have to be able to trust this president , and at a time when we are facing a hurricane that is hitting u. S. Soil, he is now diverting resources to cover his own tracks. Imagine all of the work that has to be done to come up with these maps that hes now highlighting. You see the look on the face of the acting Homeland Security agency, and you see him sitting there with the sharp with the sharpie. It is embarrassing and it is unnecessary. Jeffrey, this is a sharpie. I dont know if youve seen it. But it wasnt you. Wasnt me, but i use a sharpie once in a while. What do you think about the mystery of who used the sharpie to distort that map. I do not have the answer. But i have one answer. I watched recently a new documentary coming out about roy kahn, the unethical lawyer that was a mentor to donald trump, and it explains a lot of whats going on even today. Roy cone, an aid to Joseph Mccarthy believed in you fight about everything, no matter how trivial. Never let a charge go unanswered, and you lie if necessary to respond to it, and thats whats going on here. Of course this is a completely ridiculous controversy that would be forgotten, but for the president s insistence on fighting with the news media. Remember, he was also fighting with the Actress Debra Messing over the weekend. It seems like madness, this is who he is. He got elected once, may get elected again. They put out this official statement from a Homeland Security adviser, clearly the white house is looking for someone to blame. Looks like it. This is Government Resources taking time and energy to find someone to go up there and defend the president from this. Trump, weve known he is sensitive to what people say about him on tv. He is looking at the headlines. We had five days of people calling him out, looking for him to issue an apology and move on. Not only that, he was totally roasted on late night television, people are laughing at the whole line, was he the one that drew it. You know, he clearly, they spent time to go out and march someone out there and make this statement and it creates an optics problem for the white house because im not going to say what the president is thinking now, but makes it look like he cares more about defending himself and his reputation than people that are dying now and need help. He could have made this a one day story. Maybe because thats true. Maybe because he does care more about his reputation than these people. Yeah, wolf, i agree with rachel and jeffrey. Look, this was a missed opportunity for the president to talk about both the impending danger and peril for people along the coast of the carolinas and georgia and maybe even virginia and also to talk about as you say people who are in real distress in the bahamas, a neighboring country, right off our shores. I actually think in this case, wolf, that the president and white house think they have a grain of genuine grievance going back several days about the alabama thing. But once you get past sharpiegate and tweets, theyve squandered any opportunity for people to take them seriously. Over a broad stretch of time, squandered the opportunity for people to give them the benefit of the doubt, wolf, because we have been through a situation where the Washington Post colleagues uncovered 12,000 false and misleading statements by the president. We have been through the president lying about what he knew about Stormy Daniels and lying about crowd sizes. At this point who would give him the benefit of the doubt. It is interesting. Jake tapper, jeffrey, now reporting that fox news senior White House Correspondent john roberts just finished his 3 00 p. M. Live shot thursday when the president beckoned him to come into the oval office. According to jake, the president had one argument to make, according to an internal fox email roberts sent about the meeting provided to cnn. He stressed to me that forecasts for dorian last week had alabama in the warning, roberts wrote. He insisted it is unfair to say alabama was never threatened by the storm. Clearly the president is sensitive to the suggestion that he misspoke. You think . I mean, you think he has gone on this for days and days over this completely trivial misstatement, it seems like it. If they simply said it was an earlier forecast, there are a million ways to deal with this that it would be completely forgotten at this point. But this is the roy cone training. You fight back constantly on every issue and you know, i think it is worth pausing to remember that there are a lot of people who like that he does this, the fact that were viewing it as this terrible gaffe, baembarrassing. The fact he is sticking it to the media, calling it fake news, a lot of people like that. Thats worth remembering too. Stick around. Theres more news were following. Well take a quick break.
