Breaking news tonight as Hurricane Dorian turns its deadly force on the United States, were starting to see the utter devastation it unleashed in the bahamas. New aerial video reveals a horrific scene after dorian hammered the bahamas for days, entire neighborhood itself flat as though hit by a tornado or a bomb. Hundreds of homes that have been wiped out are now under water. Officials predict the dorian death toll now stands at 5 will certainly climb much, much higher. A just released forecast shows dorian gaining speed as the still powerful hurricane moves closer and closer to the southeastern United States. Winds are intensifying in parts of florida. Right now, hurricane warnings and watches have been extended farther up the east coast into north carolina, lifethreatening storm surges are up to 7 feet high, that is what is expected. Our correspondents, experts and other guests are standing by as we cover this hurricane disaster. First, lets go to cnn brian todd. He is on floridas east coast. Brian, florida is starting to feel some of the power that left so much of the bahamas in ruins. Reporter right, wolf, we are getting hit with storm surge, it continues its torturous turn up the east coast of florida. Tonight, its the victims in the bahamas dialing with some incredible carnage inflicted by this storm. From above, utter devastation as Hurricane Dorian continues churning towards the u. S. Tonight, we are seeing the first images of what it destroyed. This is what is left of great abaco island, buildings levelled, homes splintered, the airport flooded. Nearly everything gone. This is the scene from the air. There is fear that what will be found on the ground will be far worse. The initial reports of abaco is that the devastation is unprecedented and expensive. Reporter the high winds and heavy rains that battered the caribbean islands for nearly two days, powerful enough to twist this radio shower and sheer off rooftops. At least five people are confirmed dead. But the death toll will almost certainly rise as reports continue to come in of those still missing and injured. One man telling cnn he watched his wife die and tonight there are tens of thousands homeless. The roof was fine. We were holding really well. But when the water started to come in, it surged like we didnt expect it. It went really fast. Reporter the u. S. Coast guard is aiding search and rescue operations along with the Royal British five and bahamas royal police. The entire bahamas island chain is facing extreme flooding from roads to hospitals, to the Freeport International airport which is completely submerged making rescue efforts even more difficult, supplies nearly impossible to deliver. Tonight the storm that reached so much havoc there is headed here, to the u. S. Coast, moving slowly northwet, pushing wind and storm surge towards the coastline. Many florida counties are still under mandatory evacuation orders. This is going to be riding floridas coast for the next day, dayandahalf, while we think this is a much better track than we were looking at 72 hours ago, we just ask people to stay safe, remain vigilant. Reporter a low lying community in Martin County, Officials Say threequarters of the town evacuated. Two large rivers and the ocean converged near here. Storm surge pushed water from the Indian River Lagoon into the streets as crews scrambled to restore power even at the height of the storm, the sheriff of Martin County now issuing a stern warning. My biggest worry would be we let our guard down, that people stopped paying attention and too many people left themselves into harms way. Reporter sheriff snyder and other Law Enforcement officials telling us one thing they are concerned about is people coming back from being evacuated to the Barrier Islands is criminals will come back with them and blend in to target homes that they know have been evacuated for burglary. He says thats happened quite a lot before. She quadrupling the number of deputies he is stationing on these Barrier Islands. Wolf. Reporter thank you, ryan todd reporting for us. Lets go to the bahamas where the scope of the dorian disaster is becoming clear. Patrick you have had an opportunity to tour some of the devastated areas, to speak to some of the survivors, tell us what you have learned. Reporter today was the first day after many days of being here, ive frankly lost count, washington, that we were able to get outside the winds werent flowing so hard. Although, they were still proceeding pretty hard, that we could try to get around some of this island. Many of the roads are still under water. Many of them are blocked by submerged cars. We got to one area, though, in east freeport where a crew of people, a collection of volunteers have rubber jet skis, their small boats and the government so far has is howard armstrong. He has been pulled out of his house early this morning, with just the clothes on his back. He said he had lost everything, including his wife. It came over the roof, i imagine 21 feet at least. We were doing all right until the water kept coming up and all the appliances were going around the house like a washing machine. Thats probably i got hit with something in there and my poor little wife got hyperthermia and she was standing on top of the Kitchen Cabinets until they disintegrated and then i kept with her and she just drowned on me. Reporter im so sorry. I know. I know. So. Reporter how did you get out . Especially got out. I had a big boat anchored in there. Im a craft fishermen. I have a 40footer on a mooreing which stayed there. So i didnt even think it was there. So i had got out of the house afterpy wife drowned and because you couldnt be if there anymore and i had no tools to chop a hole in the roof in the ceiling so i swam i saw my boat was still there, i swam, took a chance and swam out to it. Reporter armstrong said after he swam out, wolf, he went over to the house of a neighbor friends house of a neighbor who had been calling for help all night long. He said when he looked in the window, he saw her dead body as well. We left arm strong today, he was waiting to see if his wifes body would be recovered today. Rescuers said, though, their First Priority is bringing back the living, rescuing the living. They rescued dozens today. There are believed to be hundreds of people out there waiting to be rescued. An awful situation. How is he dealing with it . Is he in shock right now, because its so, so sad . Reporter he was incredible shock. We tried to help him. He said he just wouldnt leave until his wifes body was brought out. And there were other people who told us about missing relatives, people that said theyd seen the relatives pulled off by the waters, so the death toll tonight is at 5. But it does not include anybody from this island, the island of grand bahama and we have heard reports, multiple reports of missing and dead. So that death toll once authorities are finally able to reach this island is just going to rise. In the meantime, wolf, you have to think about those people spending their third night in houses that are under water. Is there the worst youve ever seen, patrick . I know you have covered these hurricanes for many years . Reporter ive covered katrina. I covered wilma. I have covered irma. You see some terrible devastation and nothing like this. It gets worse every day. It doesnt get better. Usually after hurricanes things start to get better. Here things are continuing to get worse. Our only hope is now the skies have cleared enough it will be safe for the bahamian or u. S. Government to be landing planes and choppers here that can help with the rescue efforts, the bahamians at grand bahama need that help desperately. Patrick, we will have more from you coming up. I want to get another look right now at the mindboggling destruction that were beginning to witness in the bahamas. The storm chaser who look the new aerial video we have been showing you brandon clemente. He is on the phone right now. He is in the bahamas. I know you do this for a living, but is this the strongest hurricane that has ever made landfall in the bahamas . Is this the most incredible destruction youve seen . Well, it is hard to compare hurricanes. Like hurricane katrina. It demolished the ground not seeing anything on the mississippi coast and with the levee failures. You have mexico beach completely leveled. Nothing left. Here its different. Its not one completely demolished. There are multiple areas that are a widespread area on either side of the island. But to complicate the matter, it is an island. And the airport is under water. The relief efforts will be very difficult to get in. They didnt see too much debris for helicopters. There is nowhere for aircraft to land. Its very difficult. Again, we were able to get in and land on the golf course this morning with our First Responders just getting in and their purpose, you know, is to get in, clear spots for other helicopters to land, different areas to land on the island. But there is normally by air right now. So if you cant land, then the effort is no good. Its a devastating situation. Its horrible. I know were just beginning to get some of the numbers as far as death counts and at the scene and stuff like that. But i really am reserved to think thats going to be the final. Its awful, the numbers will increase dramatically. Weve heard that people survived this storm clinging to their roofs. You actually saw some of those survivors. Tell us what you saw. Reporter yeah, when we got in there today the water already had pushed out for most part. There were some areas pushed under water. There was nothing like we saw yesterday. What we saw today is not people clinging to the roof it was people gathering into the that usable or we saw groups of 20 pe or 50 or 60 and others driving around. There is a little bit of everything. Its very hard to tell whats going on especially with the air and the conditions. Of all the places that we could go. What are you hearing from people that are still trapped . Roh yeah, im hearing story, im hesitant. Everybody expects the worst. One rumor seems to be speaken as gospel. Its a really crazy story. On school buses and stuff like that. You never know whats really true or not until its an area. I know we feel the same thing that happened, there were rumors and body bags on the streets of key west. It was fine. This was nothing wrong. Down towards big pine key, its total destruction. So the rumors we heard were absolutely false for that. It tends to be the case most of the time. A new hurricane forecast intends the winds are along the east coast as dorian gets closer and closer. Our meteorologist is in the weather center. Jennifer, dorian is on the move and very dangerous . Yep, dorian is finally on the move. We should add it was sitting stationary over grand bahama island for so long. Now its moving at 6 miles per hour. Its running parallel to the florida coast. We dont expect it to get much closer to florida. The problem is the wind field is expanding. Tropical Storm Force Winds extend 175 miles from the center. So tropical Storm Force Winds will absolutely make it on shore. The center of the storm has 1 110mileperhour winds, gusts 130. On this track, you can see the rain bands pushing on shore across ft. Pierce, palm bay, all along the florida coast. That will bring the potential for flooding. Its also going to bring those gusty winds and the gusty winds will continue as the storm rides to the north. So well watch out for possible flooding as well as that push of water into, around the Barrier Islands, the intercoastal waterway and sort of push inland a little bit. Confidence is strong, this is going to stay off shore. The problem is, when we get up into the carolinas that is going to bring the possibility of major flooding, like charleston we are worried about because of the potential to flood as well as the outer banks. We could see quite a bit of storm surge, beach erosion. We could see a category 2 storm by the time it races across. Now, it will be moving much, much faster by the time it makes it to the carolinas. That itself the good news. It wont be lasting quite as long, it could still leave a path of destruction across the coast right there. Especially when it comes to beach erosion as well as some of that storm surge. So were looking at charleston right here. You can see those outer bands getting close by tomorrow afternoon. So well get the heavy rains pretty soon. Then that storm surge will follow. But with the storm sort of spreading out a little bit, its impacts are going to be a little more far reaching with the wi7bding starting out, washington, as well as the potential for the rain and that storm surge up the coast as well. Neighbors are trying to save neighbors with no official rescue crews in sight. Reporter we were walking out to a staging area where theyre bringing people in from the communities out here that have been flooded. Sometimes one at a time. You can see, there is still Hurricane Force winds and the rain coming down on us, and yet these people are going out and pulling people from their houses, from on top of their houses, saving a life. There is a little baby here, covering up a boy, the mother, come through, come through. Good job. And theyre going on a jet ski because sometimes they both, man, how are you doing . How are you doing . You made it . Yes. Reporter how high did the water get . Up to the first floor. Reporter you are safe now . Yes. So as she was saying the water was up to the first floor of her house. Many people here have told us the water came in so quickly in this neighborhood, you would not be able to tell from what you are looking at here, but there are hundreds of thousands back there and the only way to get the people from the houses is from small boats and jet skis. Whats going on . Yeah, i am trying to do a rescue here in free port after the hurricane. How many people are out there, still . A few hundred. A few hundred . Yee, a lot of homes out here. Its tough to get out there and get them. Reporter its tough. Why do you keep doing it . I tell everybody, were bahamians, were not going to stop until we get everybody in. Reporter this is all volunteer, people are coming, bringing their jet skis, theyre brigg their boats. Theyre going to get their neighbors, they say. They say everyone knows people. Its hard to navigate because of course there are no more streets. Yet, they are doing it. You dont see people from the government here. It is all very ad hoc, people coming with what they have. The jet skis they have, they are dealing with horrible weather conditions, its not safe to be out on a boat right now. Its not safe to be out here at all. Yet they say there are people out there. There are people that lost their lives out there we are told, they brought back at least one body. They say they will not stop until they get everybody. They have hours if not days of work ahead of them. Thank you. In the bahamas, the situation there is awful. As you could see. Most of tonight a state of emergency is in effect in South Carolina as the states coast is threatened by Hurricane Dorian. The mayor of charleston is warning the city is at risk from the triple threat of storm surge, high tide and heavy rain. The mayor is joining us right now. Mayor, thank you so much for joining us and you say there is a triple threat to your beautiful city of charleston. What sort of impact potentially are you bracing for . How are you preparing for worst Case Scenario . Well, thank you, washington. Yes, i mentioned that earlier today that there is a real triple threat when high tides and heavy rains and storm surge happens at the same time. Because charleston is the center of what we call the low country. We are very close to sea level and, for row night, theyre predicting a tide over 10 feet and at that level, many streets in charleston could be flooded. But i must tell you, weve had great practice. Now five years in a row with major storm events and our sense of recovery and resiliency is terrific. And so well be back in business, im sure, maybe by the weekend. Well, lets hope. Charleston, of course, as you know, is under evacuation order, at least for parts of your city. What percentage of your residents will heed that warning and actually evacuate . Well, thats a good question. I think its been pretty low so far as people have been monitoring the storm. Maybe 25 , but thats an estimate. We urge folks if you live in a home that has flooded over the last four years in one of these other events, to please evacuate. Take this storm very seriously. We will be seeing impacts from the storm. We have been preparing, wolf, in all kind of ways getting pumps and clearing drains and helping where just over the last two da, weve given out 75,000 sand backs to our citizens so we have been in preparation mode. Now we have to look what lifts we will take and move into response and recovery. So what is your ma edge to people who have decided to stay put . Reporter those who stay put need to hunker down, be safe. Be inside, be on high ground and ill tell you, three years ago when Hurricane Matthew came and i rode through the streets the night before the storm and they were deserted, i felt like we had done such a job of preparation getting people safe. And the same thing is happening in charleston right now. So people will be out of harms way, either by evacuating or being in a safe place. Lets go to our chief White House Correspondent jim acosta. Jim, the white house said President Trump cancelled his trip to poland so he can monitor the storm. But he spent four hours at one of his golf clubs yesterday while millions of americans were evacuated. Reporter thats right, President Trump and Vice President pence are relaying their activities as dorian pummelled the bahamas and now is threatening the southeast. He played golf tweeting out his grievances while pence was staying at a golf course on his trip to ireland, something the aides say actually suggested. President trump isnt asking for a mulligan after hitting the links at his golf course over the weekend as Hurricane Dorian pummelled the bahamas. Hess tweeting off on his contradiction tweeting that many travel for weeks, or work out for hours. Me, i play at one of my courses. Vice president pike pence stayed aed the trump golf course in doonbeg, ireland, three hours from where he was supposed to attend meetings. I understand the opportunity to stay at Trump National in doonbeg to accommodate the unique footprint that comes with our security detail and other personnel. It made it logical. Reporter as it turns out, staying at the trump club was mr. Trumps idea. Pences chief of staff told reporters. I dont think it was a request like a command. I think it was a suggestion. The white house says the president was receiving constant updates on the storm even as many trump was stating he had never heard of a category 5 hurricane before. Im not sure i heard of a category 5 i knew it existed. And ive seen some category 4s, you dont see them that much. But a category 5 is something they i dont know that ive ever heard the term other than i know its there. Reporter but thats not true. The president has repeatedly claimed hes never heard of such storms in the past. It was a category 5. I never even knew a category 5 existed. Nobodys ever heard of a 5 hitting land. I saw the devastating effects of that category 5. Reporter Anthony Scaramucci says hes worried about the president s state. He has a few phrases he uses repetitively he thinks is working, saying he doesnt remember hes heard of a category 5 hurricane is emblem att emblemmatic of whats going on with the mental decline. Reporter South Carolina, north carolina, and georgia and alabama will most likely be hit. Alabama says we will not see any impacts from dorian. The president didnt like the coverage that received tweeting it was, in fact, correct that alabama could have received some hurt. Its always good to be prepared. Oh god, theyre shooting right there. Ro one of the questions after congress returns, if they will pass gun laws. Senate Majority Leader Mitch Mcconnell says much of that is riding on the president. The president had cancelled a trip to poland to be here in the United States to monitor this monster storm. Yesterday he goes out to play golf. He played golf a couple times this weekend. It sends a message to people along the southeastern United States, florida, bahamas, puerto rico, et cetera, that their troubles, their distress or potential distress is a hassle for him. It makes people like me who said last wednesday or thursday sitting right here good on the president for canceling his trip look like we were giving him too much credit, lastly, wolf, it makes it seem like the president doesnt understand that he signed up for a 24 a day 7 day a week 365 day a year job. Right now dive teams are out at the wreck trying to recover the others. Were told they have seen some bodies on the ocean floor. Others believed to be trapped inside the hull of that boat which is right now upside down on the ocean floor. Released video shows the coast guard trying, failing to fight the flames. At 0940 this morning hope officially died. There will be no more survivors. The mission switched from rescue to recovery. It is never an easy decision to suspend search efforts. May day, may day, may day. Captain paul amaral heard that call raced to the scene shot the video. To know the people were trapped on the boat he told cnn its horrific. He saw bodies float to the surface. All 34 people now confirmed dead or missing were likely asleep in bunks on the bottom deck when the fire broke out.
