To gina haspel for her confirmation battle. And one year later, after President Trump fired james comey, well talk to the correspondent who broke the story right here in the situation room. And the fbi special agent with comey when he learned the news. Im wolf and youre in the situation room. Even as President Trump pushes for a breakthrough with unusual armed north korea, hes issued a new warning to iran. Ill speak with Richard Blumenthal of the Judiciary Committee and our correspondents are standing by with full coverage. But straight to the chief White House Correspondent jim acosta, the president is talking tough about iran and may soon be talking directly with north korea. That is right. Just as President Trump is trying to deescalate tensions with north korea and welcoming home the american prisoners detained by the regime, he is ramping up the rhetoric on iran and did so today and warning of severe consequences as he put it if tehran reactivated the Nuclear Program and he may find them to be tough negotiators, something candidate trump talked about during the campaign. Closing in on what may be the biggest reality tv moment of his life, President Trump is nailing down plans for a summit with north korean dictator kim jongun. Theyre just working out amainments. Will it be at the dmz. It will not. Reporter while celebrating the arrival of three Prisoners Released by north korea and on the way home. Right now, flying back are three what they were calling hostages. We call them fine people. Really fine people. Seem to be healthy. Reporter hes still tamping down expectations that the summit will produce a nuclear breakthrough. Everything could be scuttled. Everything could be scuttled. It doesnt a lost things can happen. A lot of good things and a lot of bad things could happen. Reporter as for the other nuclear deal he just ripped up with iran, he issued a threat of military action if they resume the nuclear ambitions. I would advise iran not to start the Nuclear Program. I would advise them very strongly. If they do, there will be very severe consequences. Okay. Reporter the president told his cabinet he will pursue a new agreement with iran. Well make a really good deal for the world, or were not going to make a deal at all. And iran will come back and say we dont want to negotiate and theyll say that and if i were in their position, i would say that too for the first couple of months. We wont negotiate but theyll negotiate. Or something will happen. Reporter mr. Trump has boasted for years he could outnegotiate the iranians and using an ethnic stereo type during the campaign. But the persians and the iranians are great negotiators and they just killed they just killed us. Iran Supreme Leader doesnt sound impressed, tweeting about the u. S. Exit from the nuclear deal and the president ialo and ludicrous behavior wasnt unexpected and this mans corpse will be worm food. Whatever happens in north korea or iran, mr. Trump seems to expect only positive coverage from the media. In a tweet the president revealed what was long suspected he sees negative news as fake news. 91 of the network news about me is negative. Fake. Why do we work so hard in working with the media when it is corrupt. Take away creddin shalls . The president defended his hostile detour of the press last year. Arent you concerned you are urnd minding the peoples faith of the freedom of the press when you call stories you dont like fake news. Why not just say it is a story i dont like. I do that. I do that. You are undermining confidence in our news media, isnt that important. Here is the thing. I understand. And you are right except i know when i should get good and when i should get bad and sometimes ill say, wow, that is going to be a great story and ill get killed. I know what is good and bad. Reporter as for the americans heading home from north korea, the president said he plans to greet the prisoners arrival with secretary of state mike pompeo outside of washington. Overnight it is a very Early Morning event for the president. Asked whether he expects to receive the nobel peace prize, the president said he wants a good deal for the world but now the president has doubled his work just as he wants an agreement with north korea now he has to figure out how to bring iran back to the negotiating table, a table hes not at right now. Jim acosta. Thank you. The three americans released by north korea are on the way back to the United States after a stop in japan. That may thousand clear the way for the summit between trump and kim. Lets go live to will ripley joining us from tokyo. Will, you once interviewed the longest held detainee. And tell us what happened. Reporter kim chul was detained in 2015 and for two and a half years haez ease had no contact with his naum and no news of the outside world and now in a matter of hours hell be facetoface with the president of the United States donald trump. I met him in 2016 after he was detained and at that time he gave me an on camera confession, very detailed talking about the charges of espionage facing in north korea and later convicted of. He said that he was smuggling materials on usb drives to activists in north korea. And i didnt know and i dont know if that was made under duress or saying what he felt what needed to say to get out of the situation. Hes had the toughest conditions of the three americans being held. Hes been serving hard labor. Digging holes and lifting heavy rocks and eating meals with bugs and coke roaches. And the other two americans were detained in the spring of the last year. Never normally charged but tony kim had a grandchild born and kim hack songs wife was distraught after his detainment and now they will see the president and their families, wolf. What does this tell you about the upcoming summit between kim jongun and President Trump . The account from secretary pompeos visit to pyongyang was extra a extraordinary. 13 hours after japan to north korea and didnt spend the night but he did toast north korean said the u. S. Will play a big role in peace on the peninsula. Secretary pompeo said the north koreaabns have been a great partner in arranging the upcoming summit and we expect the date and location to be announced within the next three days. According to the president , the dmz is out and people are betting on singapore and well wait for the official announcement in early june and yes, as far as summit arrangement, things are going well with the United States and when they sit down and talk about denuclearization, that is the nittygritty issue where things could go downhill quickly. Will ripley, thank you. And joining us Richard Blumenthal of connecticut, a member of the judiciary and Armed Service committee. Senator, do you give President Trump credit for engaging with kim jongun and securing the release of the three american detainees. I special think we ought to be overjoyed in welcoming home these americans so brutally kept as prisoners by north korea but no reason for complacency here or toasting success. In fact, the key is to sustain and heighten the sanctions that have brought north korea to the table. Sanctions that i and others in congress have urged and the administration reluctantly adopted and the same is true in iran where we have urged sanctions on the iranians for violating the the u. N. Resolution and now we have abandoned the Iran Nuclear Agreement rather than tighten or strengthen and enforce it more effectively and we need to be sure that we have credibility into these talks with the north koreans. The president , while he prepares to meet with kim jongun in the coming weeks, hell be pushing for denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and were still following the fall out from his withdrawal from the iran nuclear deal. Do you want President Trump to renegotiate a better iran deal. What happens now . That is a key question, wolf. And no clear path unfortunately forward now. The administration abandoned the iran deal without a strategy for how to stop a Nuclear Armed iran. So we need to come together with allies who have been divide from us and isolated and we need to make sure that we partner with those allies because again, economic sanctions, bringing iran back to the table are an absolute must and they will be much more effective if we do them with our allies. So were talking in congress now about possibly action here that will encourage or compel the president to act in combination with our allies to bring iran back to the table. The president said in his words there will be severe consequences if iran restarts the Nuclear Program. What do you think that means . I wish i knew what the president means when he talks about very severe consequences. Why i supported the iran deal and i did it despite my strong misgivings about many aspects of it is that there is no clear or good military option. So if the president has in mind some kind of military action here, as perhaps he contemplated in north korea, in both situations there is the prospect of tremendous loss and as member of the Arms Services commity spoking to our military leaders, i can say that there would be costs in american lives and resources in the event the president goes that listen to what the Saudi Foreign minister told me today. They made it clear if Iran Acquires Nuclear Capability well do everything we can to do the same. And a assume means youll acquire a Nuclear Capability yourself. That is what we mean. A stark statement. Could this decision by President Trump spark a Nuclear Arms Race in the middle east . That clearly was the danger that led me in part to vote approval of the deal in the first place. The lack of a deal raises the prospect of a Nuclear Arms Race in the middle east and also raises and heightens the danger of an israeliiran military conflict as well as drawing into it not only saudi arabia and others in the middle east, but also the United States. It destabilizes the region and divides us from our allies and now we need to move forward and your question is the key one, what is that path forward. Can it involve our allies and will we reach out to them successfully not only the europeans but also our allies in the middle east because plainly it is a tinder box and a snake pit and it endangers the whole world. Let me turn to the payments to Michael Cohen. The president s long time personal lawyer and the payments from a u. S. Company linked to a Russian Oligarch or russian billionaire. What are the areas from your per spect perspective of potential illegality. The areas are possibly bank fraud in false statements that Michael Cohen made to the banks that were dealing with him and second violations of the foreign lobbying act and Registration Requirements which may not appear huge in themselves but in combination with other possible violations like Money Laundering could make him much more vulnerable. All of these payments are deep serious trouble for Michael Cohen and that is deep trouble for donald trump. Because he has the keys to the kingdom in terms of information about donald trump. Hes the president s lawyer, really the president s fixer and these payments by at t and novartis and the Korean Aerospace industry, not to mention companies associated with Victor Vekselberg are very, very suspect. We know there was a quit proquo and we know the quid, we dont yet know the quo in terms of the services that Michael Cohen was supposed to provide. Does it sound to you senator like a possible influence peddling and does it go further with the russian connections to possible collusion . It certainly enhances the likelihood of evidence of collusion. What were seeing is pieces of a mosa mosaic establishing collusions with the russians and these pieces are very powerful evidence. The involvement of an oligarch, not just any oligarch, an individual who was sanctioned by our own government, Viktor Vekselberg and payments to the president s lawyer from the Russian Oligarch, that prospect is very serious evidence of collusion. Your calling now for another investigation into the payments. Have you received first of all any response . Weve received no response yet. But these payments absolutely require intense investigation immediately and prompt. Vigorous investigation. Lets be very blunt here, the special counsel knows a lot more about the purpose and intent of the payments than we do because he is talked to at t and novartis and Korean Aerospace and he very likely at this point is looking to cooperation from Michael Cohen and think the chances of that cooperation have risen astronomically with this news because it is big trouble for him and huge liability. Senator Richard Blumenthal, thank you for joining us. Thank you. Up next, facing tough questions from senators, the president picked to run the cia vows not to allow the torture of terror suspect and can gina haspel win her confirmation fight. Ds, 6,000 feet above sea level. But how do you really know that the beans journeyed to the port of mombasa and across the pacific . That you can trust theyre 100 authentic . Ibm blockchain. A smart way to track every step, ensuring this coffee did indeed come from 6,000 feet above sea level. And not a foot lower. This is a story about mail and packages. And its also a story about people. People who rely on us every day to deliver their dreams theyre handing us more than mail theyre handing us their business and while we make more ecommerce deliveries to homes than anyone else in the country, we never forget. That your business is our business the United States postal service. Priority you and taking cared abof the boys. E zach talk to me. Its for the house. I got a job. Its okay. Dad took care of us. Come fly with me, lets fly, lets fly away. President trumps pick to head the cia was questioned about the torture of terrorist suspects during a tough confirmation hearing and the nominee gina haspel promised to not restart the agencys harsh interrogati Interrogation Program. And lets go to jim sciutto, a rocky path to confirmation. And it is interesting, you have the nominee for the head of the cia barely asked about the primary National Security threats to the u. S. , russia and china and north korea and iran, even as the u. S. Exits one deal and attempts to negotiate another nuclear deal with north korea, it was on this question of this cias controversial enhancemented interrogation and some called it torture that haspel had a role in and whether she would defy the president if asked to start it again. I do sometimes heated confirmation hearing today, President Trumps nominee for cia director told senators she would defy a direct order from the president that she thought was immoral. My moral compass is strong, i would not allow cia to undertake activity that i thought was immoral, even if it was technically legal. I would absolutely not permit it. So you would not follow the order . No. Reporter the nomination is under criticism due to her role in the cias post 9 11 detention and Interrogation Program of terrorists. That included tactics such as waterboarding, now considered torture. Today haspel vowed never to restart the program, even if directed by the president who as a candidate enthusiastically endorsed water boarding and more. I would bring back waterboarding and a hell of a lot worse than waterboarding. I would not restart under any circumstances an Interrogation Program at cia under any circumstances. Reporter pressed however, haspel with not say if she considered the torture program immoral. Do you believe that the previous interrogation techniques were immoral. Senator, i leave that cia officers to whom you referred it is a yes or no answer. Do you believe the previous interrogation techniques were immoral . Senator, i believe that cia yes or no. Did extraordinary work to prevent attack on our country please answer yes or no. Do you believe in hindsight those technique were immoral. I believe sitting here today i support the higher moral standard weve decided to hold ourselves to she faced tough questions as well on her role in destroying video tapes of the waterboarding of a terror suspect. Claiming that it was her boss Jose Rodriguez and then the director of the National Clandestine service who gave the order and also supported his decision. Were you an advocate for destroying the tapes. Senator, i absolutely was an advocate if we could within and conforming to u. S. Law and if we could get policy concurrence to eliminate the Security Risk posed to our officers by those tapes, and and you were aware of what those tapes contained . No. I never watched the tapes but i understood that our officers faces were on them and that that was very dangerous reporter senator Dianne Feinstein also senator mark warner, the deputy chairman of the committee both were not satisfied with her answers on the destruction of the tapes. But in a positive sign for her nomination, senator joe manchin, in a potentially difficult race there. He said that she did a good job and expressed support for her. Wolf. Jim sciutto reporting. Thank you very much. Coming up, the president s personal lawyer received hundreds of thousands of dorllas in payments including one tied to a russia billionaire. A while ago at the white house, Sarah Huckabeesanders dodged questions about reports of hundreds of thousands of dollars in payments made by multiple corporations to Michael Cohen. Supposedly for insights into the trump administrations thinking. Sanders said she hasnt heard specific concerns from the president on this topic. Lets bring in our experts. And sanders said the payments made to Michael Cohen have nothing to do with the president or the white house. What do you make of that . Well, i think at this point shes clearly trying to warn the president off from this news. And somen some ways trying to protect her selves from get herself ahead of a story or reporting something later turns out not true. So that is what we saw the press secretary do over and over again today and saying any question should go to outside counsel and she admitted she didnt talk to the president about this. She hadnt heard any concerns from the president about what the perception of this could be. Was it for instance, the perception that here was the president who came in saying that he wanted to drain the swamp. Did this run counter to that. So this is what were going to see from this press secretary Going Forward and an attempt to wall herself out from saying anything that might be untrue. Essentially saying talk to outside counsel about it. And bianna golodryga, youre with us, and the connection to the russian billionaire and eyebrows are being raised as a result. What stands out to you when you look at payments. I think we could say our eyebrows are permanently raised throughout this ordeal, wolf. Viktor vekselberg is a blast from the past, a original oligarch and made the money in the 90s in the kmom in the kmomids grab in russia and there is answer of what relationship with the president and the payments through the company he had an investment in that his company runs that happens to be an american citizen that is raising eyebrows but this happened before he was sanctioned back in april and that happened prior that that interviewed by bob mueller so from what i know about Viktor Vekselberg, he is not in trumps inner circle as far as the oligarchs and in Vladimir Putins inner circle as far as the oligarchs that he has molded himself. He is one of the earlier wunone and the reason and the question of the money sent towards Michael Cohen in essence to curry favor is sort of what the what the conclusion has been thus far is what is raising a lot of questions today. Certainly is. And dana bash, let me ask you this about other Huge Development today with the north koreans releasing the three american detainees. Is this the result of President Trumps decision to engage directly with kim jongun. It certainly didnt hurt. That is for sure. If you look back at the history of when hostages are released, they tend even in the worst of times, visavis american and north korean relations, the north koreans tend to demand high level person to person contact. Whether it is bill clinton, who went and got some hostages several years ago, or bill richardson, or former u. N. Ambassador, or others. The fact that you now have a president a sitting president of the United States in active negotiations with kim jongun for a summit and by the way sent his sitting secretary of state to go and work on that and deal with the hostages, this is absolutely had the north koreans as history shows us, tend to operate. And you are right. Sam anna, on the iran deal, the president walked away from yesterday and he was asked about the pros potomac of irans now restarting its Nuclear Program. Listen to this. Watch the president s response. I would advise iran not to start their Nuclear Program. I would advise them very strongly. If they do, there will be very receiver consequences. Sam, what do you think he means by that . What are the options if they were to revive the Nuclear Weapons program . Well, wolf, in the first case, whether or not iran will restart the program as a result of our withdrawal from the iran agreement is typically something that a president would ask his Intelligence Community about before making a decision. I was hoping that this would come up during gina haspels confirmation hearing today and it didnt. What her assessment was as to whether this would lead iran to restart the program or not. Typically we talk about all options being on the table when it comes to iran. That is diplomatic and military and covert and then economic. Economic sanctions. The president is reimposing economic sanctions and i think if he extends that to secondary sanctions on european firms and foreign entities doing business with iran, they are going to be excused and the incentive for not starting the Nuclear Program are gone. I think there is a difference in this scenario versus several years ago in that i dont think the diplomatic option is on the table any more. Iran no longer believes it will negotiate in good faith and you cant imagine the leadership in iran, the hardliners going back and saying, okay, were going to be able to sell another diplomatic negotiation domestically. The politics in iran dont pan out. Bianna, the european allies are trying to convince iran to stay in the deal without the United States. So what does that say to you about President Trumps standing on the world stage right now . And iran is saying the same thing. They are still trying to negotiate with the europeans but no question, having the u. S. Leave the deal leaves a big hole and as sam said, this puts pressure on the europeans, on our closest allies. I dont see russia or china feeling the same pressure. They will likely continue doing business with iran. Of course secondary sanctions that are being threatened about European Countries and their companies have have a lost ceos putting the pause on any future investment they will make in iran. And of course the leaders from europe, whether it is Angela Merkel who doesnt have a close relationship with donald trump or macron who does, all of them are left wondering what happens next and what this means for their own country and what it means for the e. U. The e. U. Is the u. S. Largest trading partner and it seems they are once again being thrown under the bus. Everybody stick around. There is more news were following. Were getting breaking news on what appears to be the location for the summit meeting between trump and the north Korean Leader kim jongun. Lets go straight to our White House Reporter kaitlin collins. What are you hearing . Reporter well, wolf, we are told by sources that Administration Officials have been instructed to move forward with plans to hold the historic summit between trump and kim jongun in singapore after the president today during the Cabinet Meeting ruled out the Demilitarized Zone on the korean border and the only other location he has floated publicly is singapore and were told now that Administration Officials are move ago head wi moving a with the plan to hold the summit. There singapore is the preferred location by Administration Officials and u. S. Officials overall since the president announced he would meet with him there over the dmz because it is seen as a more neutral place but this is a president who changes his mind very often. There is certainly a chance he could decide to do so before that meeting actually takes place. Something the president said today he will announce the date and location within the next three days. And of course the north koreans could change their mind. Weve seen them do that before when they were supposed to meet with Vice President mike pence during the olympics. They canceled in the hour before. So a lot of unpredictability here in this situation. But we are told that singapore seems to be the location right now. Now this is a very fluid situation and fast moving at times. Yesterday the president announced the secretary of state mike pompeo was on the way to north korea to smooth out any wrinkles ahead of the upcoming summit. Of course he also secured the release of the three americans and they are on the way back to the United States right now. So it is a very fastmoving situation here, wolf. But singapore seems to be the place right now where that historic location the meeting between President Trump and kim jongun is going to take place, wolf. It looks like it could take place late this month or early in june. According to Administration Officials. Excellent reporting kaitlin. As usual, thank you so much for breaking that for us. Other news were following, today, may 9th marks one year since President Trump fired the fbi director james comey. In a tweet this morning, the former director wrote missing the people of the fbi today, thank you for your commitment to truth and for all of the good you do for this country. The former special agent Josh Campbell was with comey on that day and hes joining us along with our jeff zeleny over at the white house when the story broke. Josh, walk us through first of all how that day unfolded. Hi, wolf, the day started just like any other. Comey was someone who would get out and see the work force. The fbi is a deployed organization and communities across the country so he wouldnt sit inside of the beltway and he would get out and visit the troops and so we started in washington and dropped to florida for a speech with Law Enforcement officials and continued on to los angeles and at Los Angeles Field Office he went as he did around visiting employees at their desks and then met with a group of them in the command center and at that point when he is sitting there addressing employees that he noticed looking over their heads two Television Screens in the back of the room. One of them had fox news and the other one had cnn and on fox it comes on and indicates that comey has resigned and he doesnt know what to make because he would know if he resigned. We later learned that wasnt accurate but our colleague jeff zeleny came in after that on cnn and indicated, he had been fired. And so that set in chain a chaotic series of events. Trying to make sense of what what was the nature of what just transpired and was it accurate and no one had notified the fbi director. In fact as weve noticed and jeff could talk about how that went down as far as white house employees delivering a letter to the Visitor Center at the fbi headquarters but that moment he learned from television. And then we had to doe term w to do next. Do we get him back to washington. There were some at the department of justice and the white house were angry that he returned back on a government jet and he was subsequently barred from entering fbi space but a chaotic series of events that transpired that day and a sad day for the fbi. Were showing our viewers, josh, a picture you took of jeff zeleny on the air almost exactly at this time right here in the situation room when he broke the story that comey had been fired. Jeff, walk us through the news you were getting at that moment because it seemed al qaeda unbelievable at the time. But clearly it was a warning shot. It was, indeed. No question. It is exactly a year ago at this hour i remember running out to our Camera Position on the north lawn of the white house, which is about i would say about 30 yards or so from the White House Briefing room, sean spicer, White House Press secretary at the time was reading from a folded piece of paper that he had indeed the fbi director had indeed be fired. The a sense of disbelief in the white house. The context of it was this is about a week after james comey was on capitol hill and was testifying and this is a something the president was furious at him. He spent the weekend before in bedminster at his resort and several of his advisers had a conversation with him and they thought this would be received in a positive bipartisan way. Because democrats of course were in the pleased at all with james comey. But the role the roll out was haphazard and we rushed out and read the news from the press statement and then the white house released a letter the president sent initially not exactly the reasoning it was sort of murky and that went on to be the situation the president blamed it on the clinton investigation of course we found out in a couple of days, it was not that, wolf. Jeff zeleny, excellent reporting as usual. Josh campbell thanks to you as well.
