Attorney general Jeff Sessions offing a fiery and indignant denial of knowing any collusion between the russian en. Ref refusing to discuss private conversations in his highly public testimony. The attorney general rejected accusations that he was stonewalling, claiming he is protecting the president s right to assert executive privilege down the road in the future. But frustrated democrats werent buying his explanation as they try to get more information about mr. Trumps contacts with james comey, modis for firing fbi director and any possible obstruction of justice. Sessions questioned for nearly it 1 2 hours by normer Senate Colleagues about meetings with Russian Ambassador. Recusal from russia investigation and comeys out offer. Session remarks under oath coming hours after deputy testified in a separate hearing. Rod rosenstein telling senators under is no reason to fire in a special investigation. Robert mueller saying he wouldnt follow any potential orders to fire mueller unless there was a legal reason do so. Thinking before the senate Intelligence Committee tonight attorney general Jeff Sessions under oath declared he did not engage with russian officials on issues related to the 2016 election. Let me make this clear, colleagues. I have never met with or had any conversation with any russians or any foreign officials concerning any type of interference with any campaign or election. There are some who are concerned it goes too far in restricting health care access. We are told that during this gathering the president described the House Health Care bill passed by the house of representatives that they celebrated in the rose garden here at the white house that the president referred to that bill as quote mean during the session with these republican senators and also used a vulgar phrase to describe legislation, words that i dont know if we can necessarily talk about here on television. But he was clearly making it clear to the senators, wolf, that he did not see this bill as being compassionate enough for people who dont have Health Insurance which is obviously something that democrats have been saying throughout this whole process. Give me your bottom line reaction to what you heard from the attorney general of the United States. Yeah, three things jumped out at me as important. Number one we got the attorney general on record around a lot of things, mayflower meeting which has been subject. He is on record and this is how an investigation works bp you dpet lot of people on record, compare them to lot of people who have things on the floor that you know to be true. Trs. After the comey testify we basically add he said he said between jim comey and the president. The third thing which i hope is of very real interest to all 335 people in this building, attorney general asserted an odd privilege to not have to speak to congress because the president might in the future invoke executive privilege. This is a novel thing. Traditionally you can do that. Not to speak to congress because you could i trim nal yourself. On my given day, there are a meetings where we are asking ache encys to tell us what they are doing. If they are right and im saying im not answering your questions because the president may some say use privilege we may as well shut down in the United States congress. There were written guidelines that would prevent him from discussing what he called private conversations with the president on any subject. Also saying he was not sto stonewalling. Just following policy. Are you aware of the policy . No, im not. If the policies exist we have to learn a lot more about them. I would think that my republican colleagues in this business thoug though. Some day there will be a democratic president and they will want to bring them into n front of congress and get answers. You also heard the attorney general discuss that third supposedly undisclosed meeting he may have had with the Russian Ambassador of the United States at the Mayflower Hotel here in washington. Particularly coming after the per vision of jim comey who took copious notes, contemporaneous memoranda that were there to help other people understand what happened. Attorney general asserted he doesnt keep notes, he doesnt remember. That says, as an investigator, somebody feting or not sure about something is impossible. What is interesting to me as an investigator is he is chaerly on record now as saying there was no sub stannive meeting at the may flower. We will take that forward and aepfully we can put that. He and others continuing to avoid questions about their conversationes about the president. It a great question, wolf. The attorney generals aversion of this sort of forward looking possibility of executive privilege echos a little bit what we saw with the testimony of admiral rogers and dni, director of National Intelligence coats a week ago, i guess it was. Where they said, eer not exerting any privilege. Again, it is our right as congress, republicans and democrats, to demand answers unless there is some assertion of privilege. We have not seen that. So the next step for us, wolf, is if this privilege doesnt exist, if this idea of speaking not because of you are privacy but if you dont understand, we will scream about those individuals and hopefully get answers. He said he did not violate recusal from the Russia Administration by anticipating firing of comey. He said he was never briefed on any details of the russia investigation and no access sitting in classified information on it. Do you believe it . I dont want to get into what i believe or dont believe. At the end of the day we have to get into what fact are. It is disturbing to think that chief Law Enforcement officer in the United States of america, in the context after belief, unanimous belief on the part of the Intelligence Community as there is breakins, meddle in our elections, that he wouldnt be asking about it. As you know one of the president s long time private attorneys for the Trump Organization Michael Cohen he now has agreed he will testify before your House Intelligence Committee on september 5th. What do you hope to learn from him . Well, you know, you dont know what you learn until you hear from them but obviously you know there was a travel on the part of mr. Cohen that were interested in learning more about and of course you know he was part of that original for mag of the campaign and was in and around the campaign from the very beginning. So well be very interested in asking him what any nature of the contact was with the russians along wait. This gets to the question and there is essential for us understanding whether there were any links there. I think he is a helpful witness in that regard. Who ilelse do you hope to he from . There is a lot of work to do in an investigation like this because you have to look at a lot of documents. What you might learn from witness one could be critical to interviewing witness three. We learned today that james comeys friend from university of Columbia Law School said he is turning over what are his documents and the memo of the comey conversation with the president. Turning him over to the fbi. Heres the question. If you expect your committee will now get access to that note . I would think so. Again be an awful lot was made of jim comey writing these memos and providing them to the individual at columbia that asking them to provide journals. This is not a leak. This was not classified. And so it is out there. It wasnt protected by anything. Because of that we will get a look at those memos. I think thats what he is trying to tease out from the attorney general there. What you heard the attorney general do repeatedly is get the benefit of the executive privilege without actually invoeb invoking it. He was able to do like many people in the Obama Administration did repeatedly. The long Standing Department of Justice Policy not to talk about communicationes with the white house. Because we have to be able to have full and frank conversations and everybody sort of understands that. The president has the power to pardon anyone he wants. Pardon Michael Flynn or anybody like that. He certainly can. That is the president ial right. You know, gloria, seems to me that from the white houses political perspective, they got pretty much what they wanted without having to exert executive privilege. They did. I mean, they had a lot of angry democrats on their hands. But so what else is new about that . And it seems that you had the attorney general out there saying im not going to characterize these. It was clear to me that chairman of the committee, senator burr was a little put off by this when at the end of the session he reminded him, well we had admiral rogers in here for two hours of closed door testimony yesterday because sessions wouldnt even commit to speaking to them in a closeddoor session. If im sitting a the white house, there are those testifying in front of congress and not in any definitive way any conversation with the president that could look, at the very least, inappropriate. So im thinking things went pretty well. You know, and david, there seems to be a clear discrepancy because sessions, like rosenstein, basically said the reason they recommended comey be fired is because of the way he handled the Hillary Clinton investigation. They thought it was inappropriate for him to speak out and say no prosecution. That the role for the Deputy Attorney general but the president has made it clear would he fire comey, forget about what the Hillary Clinton email server investigation. He was going to fire comey because of the russia investigation. Yeah. The president said, irrespective of Rod Rosensteins memo, which detailed all of the thing they found faulty, he was going to fire him anyway and he knew that in advance of getting that memo. As you noted, he also said a pressure relief if you will to the russians. And he told lester holt he had russia on his mind when he was firing him. All this the president said. You are right to point out the discrepancy. Sessions leaning heavily on the Rod Rosenstein memo about the clinton investigation. He wouldnt say it was the total reason but such a great part of the reason he wanted to endorse that memo and pass it along with his recommendation to get rid of the fbi director. Phil, i thought sessions made a strong case why he should recuse himself. This is an investigation into the into the campaign. But you know this, the president very upset. Think he is probably still upset he recused himself or sessions recused himself because that set the stage for special counsel, robert mulie Robert Mueller. And this investigation will go on for a long time and the president doesnt like that. He doesnt like it but i dont see what option the attorney general had. If you participate in the campaign you had conversations with the Russian Ambassador, what are you supposed to say sni think the most curious thing about today which senators missed and gloria talked about it a moment ago, heres the question. If comey talked about this, if the president talked about this, every single person, not only department of justice, but across the United States of america knows one question is, what happened in the white house meetings . Did anybody at the department of justice call the white house and say, is it okay if we talk about this . I find it curious that nobody asked the question, did you get approval to talk about something the president is already talking about public. The answer to that is sessions never wanted to talk about in the first place sew wihe will s sorry, cant discuss. He might, the president might exert executive privilege down the road. Hasnt done it yet. I cant say anything because he might do it down the road. Right. No, you know, i havent heard that. It may well have been said before. But i think they feel it was a strategy that worked because they got the benefits of executive privilege without having to exert it. If i could say one more thing on Jeff Sessions, senator reed at the end of the hearing made an interesting point, which was that all of these complaints about james comey somehow did not come out of the attorney generals mouth during the campaign when comey was on the hot seat for his behavior, particularly in october. In fact, that sessions actually praised comeys professionalism. And so suddenly now he is referring to a prompt ufession. It cant have anything to do with russia because of course hes recused himself on russia. Very quickly, david. The whole discussion weve heard over the past 24 hours, some of the president s friends and supporters raising the possibility that mueller must go, hes no good. Why are we having that discussion . The president s friends say hes actually considering it. It is completely nuts to think thats in the ether of the conversation in the west wing. The west wing may not have shut it down yet but everyone else has. They know it would be a disaster. Coming up, what it means for the entire russia investigation, the testimony.
