To redesign air force i, the president s plane and revealed mockups of new color schemes. These sort of things, as we know, are his favorite part of president ing. But the bad news is hes still got to do some hard stuff. Theres that immigration issue. Officials say iran just fired a missile at one of our drones before attacking two tankers in the gulf of oman. On thursday 600 companies, including walmart, cost co and target warned that tariffs on china would seriously damage the u. S. Economy, result in sweeping job losses and millions of consumers. Better sort that one out, mr. President. Sarah huckabee sanders, trumps trusted White House Press secretary announced shes leaving the job, a job she redie find ov redefined over the course of her tenure but, well, not doing it. She shortened them and then by not doing them at all. Shell be missed. Trump said we have a lot of great people, we have a lot of people to choose from. Well see. Some more good news, trump is, quote, doing great in the polls, even better than in 2016, according to him in a tweet this morning. The bad news, no, hes not. The campaigns own internal polling has at president lagging in critical states like pennsylvania and michigan. The internal poll published by abc news on friday shows trump trailing joe biden by huge margins in states he won in 2016. It shows Trump Holding on in texas by just 2 points against biden. Texas. It also shows him trailing every democratic president ial contender in headtohead matchups. Trumps denied these findings and told his staff to do the same. Yesterday his staff said the lead numbers are outdated and meaningless. Trump gave a wideranging interview to George Stephanopoulos in which they discussed everything from the Mueller Investigation to ufos. Here is his take on that. I think our great pilots would know and some of them really see things that are a little bit different than in the past. So were going to see. But well watch it. Youll be the first to know. Yay but though theres bad news, too. Hes also in that interview admitting hed probably take illegal information on his election opponents from foreigners. This is somebody that said we have information on your opponent. Oh, let me call the fbi. Give me a break. Life doesnt work that way. The fbi director says thats what should happen. The febi director is wrong. If foreigners or competitors have information, should they call the fbi . If someone called, norway, we have information on your opponent, i think id want to hear. You want that interference on our election . Its not interference. Its information. I think id take it. Its called Oppo Research. Heres what the Campaign Finance law says. It shall be illegal for a person to solicit accept or see a contribution or donation described as money or another thing of value in connection with a federal, state or local election. Trump sort of back pedalled on a call into fox friends. If you cant hear what it is, you dont know what it is. How do you know its bad if you dont listen to it . If i dont listen, youre not going to know. Now, if i thought anything was incorrect or badly stated, id report it to the attorney general, the fbi, id report it to law enforcement, absolutely. Heres the deal trumps about to head into campaign mode, as if he ever really left it. Hell hold huge rallies in which hell colorfully and creatively slam the 2020 democratic contenders. Hell lie about his polls or the Mueller Investigation or the media. Hell boast about solving problems that he hasnt and in some cases that he created and he may even from time to time accidentally tout his policy successes like tax reform, deregulation and record unemployment. We all know its coming because weve seen it now for years. But unlike in the runup to 2016, hes actually president now and we still have real problems. All the tinkering with air force i paint colors wont make them go away. Here to discuss all the latest news, republican congressman Adam Kinzinger of illinois. Welcome. First, lets start with the biggest news of the week and i dont mean the foreign dirt controversy, but ill get to that. I think the biggest news of the week was this letter signed by 600 companies, including some of the biggest retailers, like walmart and costco, begging the president to back down on chinese tariffs. How seriously should he be heeding that warning . Well, i think he should take it seriously, but at the same time, first off, this is a fight we should have had 20 or 30 years ago, i want to be clear about that. As china was more of a growing economy and we had less investment there. But there is so much that is done by the chinese government, by Chinese Companies to steal our intellectual property and everything, we have to stand up for it. I think its important for these retailers to send a message, to be clear about what impact this is having. I dont think that should be the thing at that basically turns off the tariffs and have us back down. I think were in this deep now that we have to win and by winning, i dont mean china loses everything. I just mean getting to a fair trade situation where we can actually treat each other as companions, i guess, in trading and not so much as adversaries. Do you think that trump is at risk of losing some voters over these tariffs, especially in states where agriculture might be hit real hard. Yeah, i think theres always a risk and i think the president knew that when he did it. But like in my district, for instance, i have a lot of agriculture. Weve been hit really hard with these rains and flooding. They are concerned about tariffs. Whats interesting is these farmers are saying, yes, its hurting my bottom line, i dont like whats going on just from a bottom line perspective but were with the president and he needs to win. When i got a little nervous is when you Start Talking into mexico and europe and other things. Thats where i think the president runs the risk of losing these farmers. When it comes to china, i think theyre on board. Lets go to the foreign dirt story. Is what the president suggested, taking Oppo Research from a foreign national, legal or illegal . I think its illegal. And if its not, then we need to for sure define it as illegal. The question is, you know, the election law was a thing of value. My understanding is that is illegal to take information like again. If its not, we need to put that in law. I dont want to look back and say these people did it and then these people. I just think right now is a great time for to us just say, okay, going forward, nobody takes information from a Foreign Government because, listen, just from outside of whats right and wrong, they could shop the same kind of information to your opponent. But beyond that, we cant be a country influenced by another country in our election period. But trump has faced very little rebuke from republicans in congress over saying his fbi director was wrong, over saying that hed take that illegal information. Senator blackburn blocked a bipartisan foreign interference bill and was applauded for it on twitter by trump. So when are republicans going to step in and make sure that this doesnt happen . Well, you know, look, if you talk to all of them kind of privately, we all agree. Heres the problem what good does privately do . And this is not against you but i am so sick of hearing ra republicans talk privately say one thing. What good does that do anyone . I agree. Heres the issue im talking about. Every day theres new outrage. 70 isnt trum in trumps conte. My comment is you cant take foreign information from a Foreign Government. So, yeah, i wish people would speak ut moout more than stuff this. I dont think the president was eliciting foreign information. I think he was maybe being a little cute by half on this. He must say whats obvious to all of us, we cant take information from a Foreign Government. Justin amash laid out his case on why he thinks the president committed offenses, Kevin Mccarthy slammed him by saying he questions whether hes a republican anymore. Im sure you know justin amash is one of the most conservative voting records in the house. Is the new definition of republican just undying loyalty to whatever trump says or does . No, i dont think so. I never really considered justin amash a republican in the beginning. Ill explain why. I like him personally, but politically hes a libertarian. Wants smaller military, votes against military budgets, votes against proisrael stuff, any ant antigenocide resolution, he votes against, votes against any bunk. He never votes like me. If you dont consider me a republican, thats one thing. I think hes a libertarian masquerading as a republican. That said, i like him personally. On the politics i never really considered him that way anyway. Congressman kinzinger, thanks for your time tonight. I appreciate it. You bet. See ya. And coming up, well look at a curious series of media events and ill speak to my candidate of the week about his plan not to leave the middle behind. We bought a house in a neighborhood with a lot of other young couples. Then we noticed something. Strange. Oh, could you, uh, make me a burger . Poof youre a burger. [ laughter ] everyone acts like their parents. You have a tattoo. Yes. Fun. Do you not work . So, what kind of mower you got, seth . I dont know. Some kid comes over. We pay him to do it. But its not all bad. Someone even showed us how we can save money by bundling home and auto with progressive. Progressive cant protect you from becoming your parents. But we can protect your home and auto. Progressive cant protect you from becoming your parents. And with new features and richer stories. It can show dad where hes from. And strengthen the bonds you share. Its only 59 at ancestry. Com. Give it to dad for fathers day. Yesss, im doing it all. The water. The exercise. The fiber. Month after month, and i still have belly pain and recurring constipation. So i asked my doctor what else i could do, and i said yesss to linzess. Linzess treats adults with ibs with constipation or chronic constipation. Linzess is not a laxative, it works differently. It helps relieve belly pain and lets you have more frequent and complete bowel movements. Do not give linzess to children less than 6, and it should not be given to children 6 to less than 18, it may harm them. Do not take linzess if you have a bowel blockage. Get immediate help if you develop unusual or severe stomach pain, especially with bloody or black stools. The most common side effect is diarrhea, sometimes severe. If its severe, stop taking linzess and call your doctor right away. Other side effects include gas, stomach area pain, and swelling. Im still doing it all. The water. The exercise. The fiber. And i said yesss to linzess for help with belly pain and recurring constipation. Ask your doctor. The three words just roll off the tongue like the start of a wes anderson film, Sarah Huckabee sanders. Her exits after two years as trumps press secretary as many in the media wondering what lies in store for them or rather what lies are in store for them from the next press secretary. Regardless of which, the best people trump puts in that job, no one in recent memory has had a bigger impact on the way the white house and the press interact than Sarah Huckabee sanders. Joining me, Brian Stelter and john raybender. Brian you wrote about her legacy, which you said is the death of the press briefing. Its a practical example of the government going dark. The public deserves as much transparency as possible. I would say that is true in any administration, republican or democrat. We always deserve more transparency thanny ge than we. But to end the Daily Briefing is a symbol of closing up shock and not providing access. They say trump tweets a lot and answers question as lot. Its not the same as having a spokesperson address the public every day. From a p. R. Or coms point of view, we like to point out how often sara lied on behalf of the president. But the Job Description was, is, will always be the same. What should we expect from the next person . I dont think anything is going to change. What we have to understand is what has changed is the game. There is no judge anymore. Or a referee. The press is now a player on the field. As a strategist and media consultant, i look at this and i look at it as whether im a democrat or republican, it is much more adversarial and a lot of this has to do with how the news is now reported. If youre a millennial, if youre generation z particularly, youre going online, youre going to twitter and all these places now. So whats driving the news cycles are tweets and retweets and facetime on tv and all these things. I would argue that the press briefing has become totally obsolete. Is it a chicken or the egg whats driving the news cycle are the president s tweets because thats where we hear from him more often. If he was talking to the press more, maybe the White House Press briefings would be more part of the news cycle. Maybe in a world where theres more confusion, we should have more briefings not fewer. Theyre valuable in a practical way. Theyre also a symbol of access and availability. I agree. Unfortunately sanders didnt have any credibility left, especially after the mule aelle report where she confirmed she was making things up from the podium. We can only go up from here. I want to ask you both about the stephanopoulos interview. Everyone is talking about that. About how the whole thing came about. I am fascinated by that. Looking at it from a media perspective, George Stephanopoulos got 30 hours with the president. He traveled with him, went to iowa, was in the oval office. That is a lot of access. I think its part of a reelection strategy. He has this rally coming up on tuesday. From stephanopoulos point of view, do you think he made the most of that access . I think he provided the president with a microphone, will the him talk and talk and talk and challenged him at appropriate times and the public is better off for that. Whoever has the power of edit wins. If you shoot 30 hours, you get to pick whats going to be out there. Second of all, people are out there saying i want more donald trump. If i was at the white house, i would have said lets give them access. Ten minutes of exclusive access is a lot of time with a president. This is a variation on an argument im hearing, mostly from folks on fox. Take a listen. Setting aside the question of why you would have George Stephanopoulos standing over the president in the oval office, i dont know who approved that, but what about this notion of accepting foreign intel about an opponent . Is that a risk for President Trump getting pulled back into mueller . Again, why he was put in that situation is beyond me. Im not here to defend trumps interview with stephanopoulos. Why would you have given an interview is to stephanopoulos in the first place . Its an interesting question. Youre saying ten minutes would have been sufficient, not 30 hours. Theyre saying why even let him in a room with George Stephanopoulos. It seems to me an admission that stephanopoulos is smarter than trump and trump was in a risky position there. Being stuck in an elevator, youre going to find something somebody doesnt want you to know. I dont think thats what they were saying. Truth be told, trump is fine doing an interview. A client said youre going to be mad, it was a bad interview. They kept asking questions and i answered. That was on me. Its stump the speaker more than lets find the truth. For advocates for the public and the public as right to know, if youre arguing against information and interviews, then youre losing. And this white house has been losing. The hosts on fox was saying, the subtext was just stay on fox, just talk to your friends, its working for you. Its not working from an Approval Rating standpoint but its a safe space. At the end of the week he called into his safe space for a 50minute interview. Only once in a while will we see more challenging interviews. Interesting. Thank you both for having this conversation. Brian will be jouined by 2020 candidate brian yang and ill be joined by my candidate of the week. Stick around. I was told to begin my aspirin regimen, blem. And i just didnt listen. Until i almost lost my life. My doctors again ordered me to take aspirin, and i do. Be sure to talk to your doctor before you begin an aspirin regimen. Listen to the doctor. Take it seriously. I want to see if you agree with this premise. It increasingly feels like the Democratic Party has pushed moderates and blue dog democrats out in favor of farleft progressives. Even democrats who say theyre moderates, well, they still sound a lot like progressives. Joe biden is finding this out the hard way, testing and retesting that line on every issue from criminal Justice Reform to abortion. Well, another democrat in the 2020 field is also trying to capture the moderate democratic voter with a progressive twist. Congressman tim ryan of ohio wants to reach blue collar, midwestern and rust belt voters, including tens of thousands of people who voted for trump in 2016. Hes my candidate of the week, thank you, congressman ryan, for joining me tonight. Thank you. Okay. I want to hear it from your mouth because the press has positioned you as a moderate. Is that how you see yourself . I mean, im not going to get into labels. I consider myself a progressive, but my focus is on economics. My focus is on the working class people, the forgotten communities, the forgotten workers who havent been able to make ends meet and how do we bust up this system where gm gets a bailout, banks get the bailout, banks get the tax cut and meanwhile the workers get the shaft. That to me is what it means to be an american in fighting for the working class forgotten people. I dont know where that falls in the political spectrum these days but thats what my focus is. And i get that, but for voters, labels matter. And you know, campaigning and running a president ial campaign, labels do either help or hurt you. But as i look down at your positions, you know, im not sure what they say. Just shorthanding it, youre not a fan of tax cuts, you support a sing singlepayor health care system, you support guns. How do you think you differ from your 23 other democratic opponents in this case . I differ because the last 45 years of my life i spent at the epicenter of deindustrialization. Ive represented a Congressional District that is the epicenter of infant mortality rate, epicenter of the opiate crisis in the united states, epicenter of the Health Care Crisis in the united states, epicenter of the Mental Health crisis in the united states. So i know what working class families are going through. I know what the working poor are going through, and i believe this election the democrats want to nominate somebody and must nominate somebody who deeply understands economic struggles that people are going through, s. E. Or were not going to be able to beat trump. They need to go to tim ryan for america. Com and support this campaign because thats what im going to be talking about. I get that and i think thats absolutely right. And this is the point im trying to make. I get the feeling that people like to use the term moderate now just to refer to sort of a rhetorical style. Biden. Biden speaks the language of blue collar vote as. I know you do, too, from a very authentic place. You delivered one of the best lines ive ever heard in politics on my show, maybe a year ago and maybe youve used it again. You said democrats need to reach the voters who shower after work, not before. Do you think the ability to just not condescend to blue collar voters, is that what we mean by moderate now . I think youre right. I think sometimes those ideas get conflated into that, about being for the blue collar, for people that take a shower after work, for people that work with their hands. What i want to say to democrats is i think the perception is that were a coastal party, the perception is that were an Ivy League Party and the reality of it is theres tent cities of Homeless People in l. A. And theres waitresses who cant make ends meet in new york and theres people in the fishing industry in the gulf of mexico who cant make it and theres farmers in iowa who havent made a profit in five years. So talking to all of those people and pulling that f. D. R. New Deal Coalition back together is how youre going to be able to stop the things happening like we started this interview about, bailouts for corporations and concentration of wealth. That only happens with the farmers and fishermen and factory workers and waitresses and people who are homeless all come together and an economic idea. You know what happens if im the nominee . The center of gravity from the Democratic Party shifts from the coast to Middle America and youngstown, ohio. That changes everything because then we can go after senate races in kentucky, senate races in South Carolina where we have good candidates running. We could start flipping this political system upside down. And thats why i think this lane is so important because i dont believe the Green New Deal and socialism and abolishing i. C. E. Are the ways to beat donald trump. I think those are the ways to lose to them. Are you going to take that message to your democratic opponents on the debate stage . Are you going to say socialism isnt the answer, the Green New Deal goes too far, abolishing i. C. E. Is crazy . Yeah, for a certain, te exte. We have to align environmental with financial incentives and get the market to back the politics. It cant be all government or no government. Its got to be the blend of the Public Private partnerships. We had private sector going strong and we had workers that were well represented in unions who were getting cut in on the deal and thenext thing you knowe have the greatest middle class ever. Everybody is at the table, everybody has value. We can create a system. If the government gets working properly, everybody can win. Tim ryan for america. Com, this is happening. Im on this debate stage because this economic message is resonating with people. Congressman and candidate tim ryan, i thank you for coming on the show tonight. I really appreciate it. Thanks, s. E. Well, they couldnt play nice forever. The 2020 Democratic Candidates are starting to turn up the heat on each other. Thats leading some voters to fear a 2020 repeat. And a little later, ill speak to the only republican bold enough to challenge the president , on the campaign trail at least. Award winning interface. Award winning design. Award winning engine. Its been relatively plight so f polite so far. Heres John Hickenlooper and vermont senator Bernie Sanders squa squaring off on socialism. I and other progressives will face massive attacks from those who attempts to use the word socialism as a slur. Democrats must say loudly and clearly that we are not socialists. If we do not, we will end up helping to reelect the worst president in this countrys history. Candidates have also tried their hand at maligning frontrunner joe biden. Take a listen. Democrats can no more turn the clock back to the 1990s than republicans can return us to the 1950s. And we should not try. We cannot return to the past. We cannot simply be about defeating donald trump. Was joe biden a return to the past . He is. And that cannot be who we are going forward. Well, here was bidens response to some of that. Folks, im not naive. You know, some say that this is an Old Fashioned way of doing things. Well, if its Old Fashioned way of doing things, were in real trouble, man. This is obviously to be expected in a primary with 23 candidates, but some of worried that this will only produce a battered and unpopular nominee when its all over. With me now is former florida gubernatorial candidate and cnn political commentator andrew gilliam. Welcome, andrew. There was some good reporting from dave wiegle this week. One supporter said i was a berner supporter last time but i do not appreciate the negativity and onlybernie attitude. Im afraid were going to wind up where we were last time, people not coming out to vote if their candidate is not the nominee. Whats your take on that . Are her concerns justified . Well, ill say those are not my concerns, those are not my fears. We are still early in this primary process, but even in the polls that weve seen and this point, what democrats are unitesed behind, even if theyre not united behind the same candidate, were united behind defeating donald trump. So i got to tell you, i have my favorites, but it almost doesnt matter who the democratic nominee is, that democrats i believe are going to unite behind each other beginning with the candidates. But i think the rank and file want to win. In particular the antibiden rhetoric that he is out of touch or stuck in the past, hes currently the frontrunner. If hes the nominee, do you think that kind of friendly fire may weaken him and in fact give trump some ammo . Hes the current frontrunner. I dont know if that frontrunner status will last. We have our first debate, what, in two weeks, beginning down here in florida and then well be together in detroit for the cnn debate. So what i would have to say about that is that this race has a longtime to go and i have to tell you, every democrat that i talk to, regardless of their own individual personal favorites, they want to beat donald trump and theyre fired up about it. But do you worry that the criticism of biden, that hes out of touch or may be too old for this, do you worry thats giving trump some really good ammunition to use either in the primary or if hes the eventual nominee . Do you think thats fair criticism . I think donald trump will come up with his own ammunition. Quite frankly, it doesnt even matter what we say about ourselves. Donald trump is going to continue to spout off the rhetoric that he has. I hope that we as democrats dont begin to fight this domination on republican tropes and on republican turf. We need to define this race for ourselves, talk about ideas that will help people get access to health care, ways they can live on, family leave and the like. If we hoist this race as a response, a call and response to donald trump, then weve already lost. Weve got to play on our own field here. What about some of those ideas . Do you worry that a primary that seems fairly obsessed with whether socialism is a good or a bad thing will be a problem for a party in the general . Yeah. So let me just say. First of all, if we are debating terminology, then weve already lost. I am not interested in anybody defining one definition of a term over another. If what votes are are wars are with is a debate about terminology, this means theyre not hearing us on policy and what were going to do to make their lives better. My cautionary note with all respect to those out there in the middle of that back and forth is forget the terminology. Lets talk about how it is these topics and issues are going to affect every day people. So Bernie Sanders has faced a lot of criticism for stirring divisions in the party, both back in 2016 but also again now. He hired a leftwing columnist attack dog to trash the democratic opponents for him. Do you worry that sanders is putting himself before the party, before this idea that you speak of, union fighting the par unifying the party coming together . I have not seen any evidence that if senator sanders doesnt get the nomination that he wont be fully out there embracing, endorsing, supporting whoever does get the nomination. Were in a nomination battle. Theres going to be a competition of ideas. Supporters are going to feel strongly about the candidate that they want to win, but ill return to the earlier point in our conversation, which is mostly democrats want to win. If this is a bernie or biden or bust or harris or bust, then quite frankly, we got bigger worries out there if thats the concern. I think this is going to be a party that ultimately unites behind the candidate who makes his way through the nomination. Andrew gillum, also great to get your perspective. Thanks, s. E. Its a hard thing to do, but also one could argue an important thing to do, especially when a sitting president is deeply unpopular. Well, theres only one guy who is up to the task this goround, at least so far. And though he faces an uphill battle, he isnt all that bothered. Joining me 2020 republican challenger to President Trump, former Massachusetts Governor bill weld. Welcome. Thank you, sncht. E. I wanted to read a you letter to the editor carol writes there are currently two candidates running for the president ial nomination, President Trump and bill weld. Trump gets copious notice in the news media across the political spectrum. Bill weld, all though he is more honest, honorable and qualified candidate, much more fit to be president than trump, gets a mere mention every now and again, even though he works diligently to campaign. Its well past time that bill weld should get the attention he deserves. Look, its no small deal that youre mounting a primary challenge to the sitting president of the united states. Do you think youre getting the attention you deserve . Im getting plenty of attention. All five of those president s that those five candidates ran against lost. Making a primary challenge against a president historically has had an impact and i do predict i will win the utah primary against President Trump, who received exactly 14 of the vote. With carol in your corner, she should run your utah operation. Others like larry hogan and john kasich have opted not to do this. Why do you think given trumps weaknesses, others havent gone where youre going . I think people think nothings going to change. Thats wrong. Ive been around long enough to know six months is an eternity in National Poll tux and i think its going to be the president thinks the law does not apply to him and hes a stranger to the truth and theyre not going to like that at the end of the day. To those who think he has no shot, its not going anywhere and you say this is real . This is real. The response i get on the ground, frankly, is that the president is not popular, maybe hes very popular with the republican state committees but theyre the trump organization. My strategy is not to try to charm them. Its to enlarge the electorate, get those millennials, genxers voting. Youre saying on the ground in places like New Hampshire youre hearing it i shook 240 hands in three diners a couple of weeks ago. I didnt encounter one trump voter. And they werent acting either. So youre up against some pretty serious headwinds. History being among them. But another reason people dont primary sitting president s often is that going against the infrastructure of the party, in this case the rnc, all that money and resources, et cetera. Thats tough. Are you feeling that challenge, that obstacle . Not so much. You know, the republican state parties often are quite weak there. They are just a reflection are and are the trump committees in each state. The New Hampshire republican party, for example, is a few trump loyalists but, you know, that state is 65 35 prochoice on preproductive rights. Its a new england republican state and i aim to make it mine. I as a new englander, you know, i know what you mean. Speaking of New Hampshire, how important is that state for your strategy . I think its very important. First in the nation primary is the source of a lot of New Hampshires clout in this country. And the trump folks tried to abolish the primary this but im going to campaign hard elsewhere in new england and in the midatlantic states. Next stop california, oregon, washington.
