This weekend in key battleground states. Bernie sanders is working his way through iowa, along with Amy Klobuchar, Michael Bennett and elizabeth warren. Beto orourke is also there after giving a speech in texas this morning. Kirsten gillibrand is courting the Lone Star State and pete buttigi buttigieg. Above all else, we must defeat donald trump. The other reason i decided to run this time, jill and i, is because we have to restore the back bone of america. We have to start rewarding work, not just wealth. This time well rebuild the middle class, i promise you, i promise you. Were bringing along everybody, their race, religion, ethnicity. Its not a joke. Thats what its about. So far his strategy has been pretty clear, lets go straight to the general. He set out the stakes directly attacking trump for his moral failures and lack of leadership. He brought up charlottesville in which a woman was trump, resurrecting trumps indecemb indefensible words about good people being on both sides. It was trying to bait trump and it worked. Since biden announced, trump has spent the last week obsessively rage tweeting biden, retweeting 60 biden tweets in an hour at one point. Much to bidens delight. I understand the president has been tweeting about me this morning for a while pip w. I wonder why the hell hes doing that. Reporter trump is giving American Voters a sneak peek at what a general election could look like, and thats good for biden. As one adviser told politico of trumps biden fixation, weve asked him, i personally asked him to stop. Its not helping us, its helping biden. We dont think biden can make it out of the democratic primary, but he will if the president gives him oxygen. It not just trump, though. The rnc is happy to help joe out, too. In an email blast this week, they helpfully shared this with voters as Vice President joe biden advised president barack obama not to go forward with the raid that resulted in the death of 9 11 perpetrator osama bin laden. All that did was remind us that joe biden was vicefreakingpresident of the United States, that he disagreed once with barack obama, one of the guys that trump voters supposedly loath. Look, its early, theres a lot of runway for biden to blow it but one things for sure, in the immortal words of the bull durham pitcher, he wants to announce with authority. Lets bring in van johns. Do you want all the shows in are you coming for my show . Would you like this hour . Its an eightpart series. It will be over soon enough. Its great and were all really happy for you. Thank you. And proud of you. So lets you and i talk like friends. Im a republican, as you know. Yes. I cant support a number of the democrats policies, but i want trump gone. Yes. I think hes bad for my party, hes bad for the country, hes bad for our soul. So i am laser focused on identifying the person who is the best candidate to do that and right now im landing on joe biden. Can your party accept him, though . Well, heres the problem that we have. You have one part of the party that says its very simple, we lost the industrial midwest by 70,000 votes, 10,000 votes in michigan, a few more in ohio and pennsylvania. Joe biden can probably get those 70,000 votes without getting out of bed. So if you just run exactly the same race again, can joe biden get 70,000 more votes in the industrial heartland than Hillary Clinton . Yes, go with joe. The problem is you have another part of the party that says every time you tell us this person cant lose, john kerry, war hero, al gore, Vice President , Hillary Clinton, every time you tell us this, it works out bad so it starts feeling look electability is like lucys football. Like every time you sell us on electability, it end up being a whiff, meanwhile barack obama was completely unelectable. I know both sides of the argument. I do believe as we go forward joe biden will have the opportunity to win people over. I feel like if you look at social media, youre looking at the wrong place. The real left in our country is so much more pragmatic than the social media left. The right in our country is so much more kind hearted than the social media right. So we still dont know what the actual voting part of our party thinks. Well, to that point, when i talk about joe biden, i talk about sort of i like to say hes part of the prepartisan politics. True. Hes getting in trouble now for having said nice things about mike pence or dick cheney, right . I think thats insane. Is it really heresy now for me to say nice things about you and vice versa . I hope not but i hate to say so, yeah. Something has happened where people it seemed at least on social media i dont know if people actually feel this way but on social media, you are only as good as your last tweet, your last sound bite, the last thing that went viral. Its almost like were the United States of amnesia. Literally whatever youve done for your entire could life and career could be wiped out by one bad moment in social media. So can joe biden survive in that environment . The reality is hes been accused of being a gaffe machine up until now and it hasnt stopped hmm from being able to be this incredible frontrunner. Look, the idea that somebody who tries to have a collegiality and say i disagree with you on 99 things but youre still fine person. I havent seen you chopping the heads off of small kittens. I havent seen you abusing dogs. Theres something about you thats good, that that disqualifies you, thats scary but it may be where we are. Its crazy. You and i know this economy right now objectively good. Really hard to argue. And we should all like that and democrats should not root for a bad economy of course. Democrats will not win, though, i think if they run on a Green New Deal and 70 tax rate and all of that. What would your advice to democrats be when it comes to running on or against this economy . Well, i got a chance to talk to tim ryan, who is running for president as a democrat on my show. One of the things that he is really focused on is boom for whom . There are still parts of the country where this really has not worked out well yet, and barack obama went out there and said weve got a good economy, look at all of our great growth and people wound up resenting it. You do have pockets of the industrial heartland where theyre Still Closing factories and plants. In those places i think theres an argument to be made. And i hear democrats making that argument. Its factually true. But also factually true that more people are feeling good than they were in past administrations, in past economies. So im wondering, ive been saying to Democrats Health care, immigration, talk about nothing else. These are two issues you can win on. You just did in an election. These are issues Americans Care about and trump loses on. I thinks that right. I do think the economic inequality argument is something democrats want to figure out a way to make because the tax cuts help the rich. That sticky widget, youre going to still see democrats trying to figure out some way to make it work. I dont know if we wind up sounding tone deaf. Look, you got a miracle bumble bee economy going on where you have all the stuff you would want. You have low inflation or no inflation, wages going up, unemployment going down. So in that environment, i do think the economic cards inevitably wind up in trumps lap but there are Economic Issues to your point, family leave, health care and student loans, other Economic Issues in there that the republicans have not done as well on. Im going to tell you, its going to be rough sledding for democrats if they have to run head long into an economy like this. Van, thank you very much. Make sure you stick around for one of vans shows coming up at 7 00, hell be talking to congressman president ial candidate tim ryan and comedian Chelsea Handler. Up next for me, president ial candidates have always looked for ways to get their message out to break through the pack. One democrat seems to have a handle on that. No one has made better use of free media than Pete Buttigieg, a once unknown march who has broken through the clutter of 21 other president ial candidates to become the partys withinman future, if not their nominee. Theres few people he wouldnt talk to from small town cable press, ellen, bill maher, the Breakfast Club and as a result he has quickly become a household name with a real chance at the nomination. Contrast that with joe biden, a familiar entity with nearly half a century in politics. He announced hes running last week and to me count as since appeared on just two media outlets, the view where he made his announcement and good morning america, in a taped interview that ran this week. Is biden missing out where buttigieg is cashing in . Joining me now the press secretary for bidens 2008 president ial campaign, markp. Congratulations to you. I think biden should go everywhere, podcasts, digital outlets, even fox news. I think mayor pete is in a much different position. He didnt come from a major media market, he wasnt a members of congress, therefore he did have to reintroduce himself. His name i. D. Was very, very low. He hit local media, he hit national media, he hit basically every spot you could possibly think of. Vice president biden, on the other hand, has universal name idea. So what he was able to do with his announcement was draw a contrast between himself and trump. Who didnt need to mix it up as much. But it still very, very early and i think hell engage veries for very forcefully with the media on all levels. I hope so. I dont think were going to see a joe biden we havent seen before unlike the sunday shows. So is it possible for someone weve known for so long to shake loose our scemented notions of who he is . Well, thats his challenge. We need to see if joe biden can stand on his own. Right now what hes made his campaign about two things, one, this country is not who we are. You know, this is not donald trump as america, this is Barack Obamas america. Unfortunately hes going backwards in time to barack obama and barack obama proved over and over again that he was great at getting himself elected, the only other democrat he got elected was joe biden when he ran on the same ticket with him. So joe biden has to come out with his own positive, optimi optimistic agenda for what hes going to do, especially for those swing voters who voted for biden and obama and then switched to trump. Hes in a very strong position right now, hoose lees leading pack. I do think Bernie Sanders support is stronger its a smaller base but its a Stronger Base thats not going to leave him. Biden has proven he does have a big number of supporters in the Africanamerican Community especially. If he can maintain that, that would be an impressive thing. I think because were focusing on the media and youre right, mark, its early, theres time to do lots of things. But i think if bidens game plan, if his strategy is to only do legacy media, i think hes going to risk looking entitled and sort of above the process. I want to see him do weird podcasts and millennial digital shows. I think that will only benefit him and make it look like, look, i get it, ive got to get in the mix. I agree completely. I think that you really have to go not necessarily look at whats legacy media, whats new media, the difference in a podcast and sort of the network news, just have to go to where people are. People are consuming news in new and different ways, you have to go where this are. People are on fortnite with, where can biden go . Young voters dont even watch tv. Yeah, you know, i think it just a willingness to try new technologies and new avenues and outlets. I think you saw the last week Vice President s Campaign Spending about 400,000 on facebook ads. That he will really telling. That means the campaign understands and he understands the need to reach out on social media, whether its through advertising or through sort of direct contact, the way President Trump does on twitter. Kevin just quickly before we go, Pete Buttigieg, as i mentioned, has been really, really good at using the media. Do you think biden should be nervous about Pete Buttigieg . Well, buttigieg has been great. His staff is very good. Theyre running annin sur insur outside campaign. Thats his challenge is to get known. Joe biden is already known. He needs to shake the rust off and not say things like china is not our competitor. Who needs to look like hes present and understands the current climate, which means using all the newest tactics, including everything from podcasts to twitter to everything else. Thats his job. Mark and kevin, thanks so much for joining me. Kevin, congratulations again on the new baby. Thank you. Get your compass out, youre going to need them to keep track of primaries. Theres Kamala Harris and cory booker vying for. Voters in south carolina. Theres beto orourke and Pete Buttigieg chasing the young white progress of vote. Bernie sanders and joe biden are both making the case that they represent the working man. Then youve got colorado senator Michael Bennett and Amy Klobuchar and biden again trying for the moderate wing of the Democratic Party. So with all these overlapping interests, who are these primaries within primaries helping . Joining me to discuss, former republican congressman cnn political commentator charlie dent and democrat being strategist former director of the new york straight of the Democratic Party basel smikle. Look at this great looking panel. I did not mean to objectify you gentlemen. My candidate of the week for all the wrong reasons, elizabeth warren, who has the dubious discontinuing of being the only candidate among the top six democratic contenders who does not beat trump in a hypothetical headtohead matchup in the latest cnn poll. I said it here often and early, her campaign is d. O. A. From the boston herald, elizabeth warrens best move is to drop out of the race. Should democrats move on . Over the last few days im really starting to like elizabeth warren. Really . Despite everything that you just said. And you know what . Because over the last day or two she sent out this student debt calculator so that you put in your information under her plan, it spits out how much you would actually save in her plan. She wants to wipe it out. But shes been spending a lot of time talking about policy and a lot of voters are really, really starting to gravitate toward her for that reason because shes taking stuff thats really complex and trying to make it very accessible. Now, at the end of the day to be clear, theres going to be lead changes throughout this whole cycle for the next nine months. It going to be good for fundraising, it going s going good for gathering staff. We have to sit back and see. I rear mimind up beating don trump is the goal. My good friend Andrew Martin is waiting for democrats to form voltran and run against donald trump. But we have nine months. Bernie and biden are hoping to be the working mans candidate. Looking at the primary straight, iowa and new hampshire, who among those two do you favor in those primaries . New hampshire i would probably favor bernie at this moment, being from next door. Biden, i would give him an advantage in iowa. Bernie has deep support, the question is how broad and biden has broad spoupport and how dee is it . It going to winnow out and which of these other candidates is going to break through . I think Kamala Harris is a sleeper candidate. She checks a lot of boxes for the democrats. Lets talk about Kamala Harris. Its early in february. Harris and booker are really making themselves present in south carolina. How crucial is that state for those go candidates in particular . Theyre not polling at the top yet. Its incredibly important. As y where Kamala Harris has a bit of an advantage, california is early this year. It on super tuesday. That actually gives her a bit more of a bump than a california democrat normally would. Right. So africanamerican votes are going to play incredibly important in this race. Weve seen how mobilized they are around candidates like Stacey Abrams and andrew gilliam. So people are really teed up. And counterintuitively, biden seems to be doing very well among africanamericans, at least at this point. He is. At polls hes doing great with africanamericans. Buttigieg had a nice bump but its dissipated since biden announced. Let me ask you this. Historically the people that democrats like buttigieg and beto, younger voters, historically they dont vote in primaries. They voted in larger numbers than were used to in the midterm, but do you think this will be a sizable voting block this time around in the primary . It may be but the challenge there is going to be bernie. Bernie overperforms among millennia millennials. I think that millennial vote, while its up for grabs, youve got to take it from bernie. Interesting. Basel, charlie, always so great to have you both here. When we come back, secretary of state mike pompeo will reach with his russian counterpart next week. The ongoing crisis in venezuela is far from over with the opposition regrouping and president Nicolas Maduro not backing down. At one point the longawaited moment seemed close at hand with word maduro had a plane ready for takeoff to flee the country. Russia encouraged maduro to stay and hold firm. The uprising turned deadly and failed because while guaido had support, he didnt have enough support from military leaders and thats what you need for a coup. President trump weighed in drastically downplaying russias push to exploit the crisis. I had a very good talk with president putin and venezuela was one of the topics. Hes not looking at all to get involved in venezuela other than hed like to see something positive happen for venezuela. Others in the administration, though, say russia does want to get involved, including secretary of state pompeo. Hes set to meet next week with Russian Foreign minister sergey lavrov. Well talk about why venezuela matters in a minute but furirst cnn as you paula newton is live in caracas. What are you seeing on the ground . Reporter the military here, any slowigan they were given by the opposition felt on deaf ears. Juan guaidos goal was to take the message out to say join us. There were literally only a few dozen protesters, they were pleading saying venezuela is dying. The good news is we didnt see the confrontations that we had soon earlier in the week, but this is definitely an Opposition Movement that remains stalled right now, especially given the very dramatic events of this week. You know, you have to put that, s. E. , in stark contrast to the stirring military Photo Opportunities by Nicolas Maduro this week. You cant help but see him as emboldened through all this. He was trying to give that message. Listen to him telling his soldiers we need to be ready in case there is in his words a fight with the u. S. Empire. Translator i will never give up. Do not ever give up, in combat, in resistance and in victory. I hate to break it to everyone, but whatever this is a zerosum game. It always has been between the opposition government. The opposition is listening closely to the Trump Administration as well and those confusing remarks from, you know, the National Security team and secretary pompeo saying one thing about russias involvement and donald trump saying another is making opposition think who can we trust, who we can count on and thats when a lot of back room negotiations are going on still at this point. S. E. . Paula newton live from crackcrac ca caracas, thanks very much. Why does it matter to us . Sam, i want to break this down into a few layers, starting first with the humanitarian crisis. It now the worst in the western him hmm hemisphere. Nearly 90 of the country lives below the poverty line. Children are malnourished and diseased. The organization of american states say that newborns in syria have a better chance of survival than those born in venezuela today. Now, sam, you and i have talked about Foreign Policy a lot, addressing many different theaters and i know firsthand how difficult it is to get attention on humanitarian crises, quote unquote, over there. But why should this particular point matter to us . As you just mentioned, you and i discussed the work i do with unicef and other organizations who are active in venezuela as well active in other humanitarian crises in their own hemisphere. I dont think there is ne chaan chance anyone is going to mistake President Trump, pompeo or john bolton as great humanitarians. They adhere to a double standard diet in their own hemisphere and around the world. The suffering of the venezuelan people is certainly a consideration for the administration when they seek to support juan goodio, but let not forget President Trump cut off assistance to northern triangle countries, which was being used to ameliorate humanitarian situations around the world. My conclusion, s. E. , is that this decision to try to topple what the Administration Calls the troika of tyranny is different by politician, not by policy. We have maduro, who is a sessionist leadsession i socialist leader. If he wasnt, we would see a lot more towards going the other way. If we dont russia will. Break that down for us. I think the administrations interventions, i think it been fortunate they havent actually ruined what has been the formation of a coalition of 50 countries that dont recognize maduro as the legitimate president. That coalition depends on nonintervention, military or otherwise, by the United States. The rhetoric the United States has been using when it discus s es military options, its led to statements saying they would never do that. You have millions of people that have left the country. The asylum applications in the United States, nearly 250,000 last year, one million in colombia, a threat to the economy. There are drug cartels operating with abandon. So theres something that needs to be done and needs to be done immediately, but the u. S. Acting alone could undermine the entire effort. Sam, lastly, theres a ton of oil in venezuela. What role does that play . What role should that play in our Decision Making . Well, there is a ton of oil and thats why it interesting that President Trump chose to rightfully sanction them to remove some of that oil offline as part of our Pressure Campaign while he simultaneous lily calln opec to increase production. T he is increasing pressure on members of maduros team and his associates by putting on these sanctions while also trying to cove covertly message to members of maduros power base that if they flip and go over to the other side, there are great benefits to them. That would be a smart strategy if President Trump wasnt open live undercutting secretary of state pompeo and other members of hits team while they try to implement this strategy. Sam and juan, stay right there. I want to talk about republicans and democrats and what they think we should do in venezuela next. Its confusing. Evy silverado. It looks real sturdy. The bed is huge. Were discussing the crisis in venezuela and what if anything the u. S. Should do about it. I have juan and sam still with me. Guys to look at u. S. Policy on this is confusing. A wall street journal headline sums it up for the left, democrats strain for a unified message on venezuela. Youve got nancy pelosi and Chuck Schumer supporting the recognition of juan guaido. Others say venezuela should hold nor election. And its not any better on the right. The Trump Administration has sanctioned allies of maduro but republicans are divided on military options. Linds Lindsey Graham recently tweeted, cuba, russia send troops to prop maduro up in venezuela. Why do you think policy is so muddled on both sides . One word florida. And so i think unfortunately my critique of this administration, theyve done some things correctly, including launching individual sanctions against drug traffickers, but the policies doesnt seem to be part of a plan and some to be for winning votes. The House Democrats have introduced legislation that recognizes that Nicolas Maduro is responsible for the crisis, that there is an urgent need for humanitarian response and you need to escalate international pressure. So the three preeieces of legislation and one of them calls for authorization before the United States uses military action in venezuela. Particularly in a case like venezuela where we saw this week they clearly dont have an organized plan. Sam, youve also got some democrats doing a really odd dance around maduro. Bernie sanders refusing to call him a dictator. Worse, ilhan omar implied hes a victim of u. S. Policies saying a lot of the policies we have put in place has kind of helped lead the devastation in venezuela and for where we have arrived today, the use of bullying and int intervention does not help and is not in the interest of the people of the United States. Sam, maduro is being bullied . What is she talking about . It would behoof representative omar to study whats going on in venezuela before making reckless statements like that. She is right that the United States history in latin mrk is l america is littered with coup attempts. This is not a coup. We really do the public a disservice when we make these gross stereotypes about whats happening without also pointing out the fact that this is not as black and white. Its not either putting an Aircraft Carrier next to v venezuela or supporting free and Fair Elections in venezuela. We have the president pillaring Nikolas Maduro because hes a socialist and we have the far left and Democrat Party like ilhan omar who are making frankly unfounded and irresponsible statements about whats happening in stereotypes of what socialism looks like both in the United States and latin america. Yeah, and i dont see a lot of people calling to task or asking her or Bernie Sanders to explain that position. Maybe someone will. Sam, juan, thanks so much for being on to break all of that down. I appreciate it. Thanks. All right. Today on twitter, trump defended some pretty odious characters. I have a few thoughts on that. Stick around. With word that facebook banned, quote, unquote, dangerous individuals from both its facebook and instagram platforms, the president had a mini meltdown on twitter, calling the move censorship, and retweeting some of social medias worst known white nationalist, islamophobes and conspiracy theorists because, hey, you dance with the one that brung ya. Facebook noted alex jones, and Milo Yiannopoulos as well as known antisemites like louis farrakhan. For many this move is a well overdo one and its good news. The American Jewish committee and the daeantidefamation leag welcomed the ban. So did the new york daily news, writing in an editorial, they have a right of free speech, but they dont have a right to pollute facebooks pages if facebook doesnt want them. I totally agree. Facebook is a private company, and they, like every other, can set their own standards. No one is arguing whether facebook can ban hate speech from its platform. But my question is to what effect . My issue with banning insidious voices like these isnt theoretical. It isnt overcensorship or free speech. Its practical. If we banish these people back to their basements, underground chat rooms, and internet nether regions, we wont see them as clearly as we need to. Thats in some ways how we got here, caught somewhat by surprise when it turned out racism is very much alive and well, nazis are living next door, antisemitism isnt a lastcentury problem, and White Nationalism is not really a fringe belief. Suppressing these dangerous voices might give us a sense of false security that if we cant hear or see them, they no longer exist. Well, they do. They are here, and id rather them hide in plain sight so we can know our enemy. Rather that than pretend taking away their microphones is a solution. Their microphones, after all, arent the problem. Its their ideas. Okay. Thats it for me. Up next, my friend van jones talks to president ial hopeful congressman tim ryan and also sits down with comedienne Chelsea Handler. You dont want to miss it.
