That water is going to be surging back in the question is how high, with problems with flooding and getting the water out quickly, it remains to be seen how ready they are and what kind of storage surge were going to see here. The area where were standing is not as bad as some of the city streets that are literally wind tunnels. The force of the win is much, much worse. Wean seen at least three street signs come down. Very, very dangerous. Just trying to stand here all right. I think were losing kyunglah. Miami beach is out there, which you cant really see, because the clouds have come in so thick. Theyve had serious issues with the winds out there. We have heretic too in miami. The breaking news is this cracked crain in downtown miami rosa floors is in miami, and i want to go to her for an update. Reporter weve been monitoring those cranes for days. Ought you mention, the city officials told us they did not have enough time to move those cranes. Here in this area where im at, if we just tilt our cam are, you with see two cranes right behind me. Theyre swaying in the wind. Were seeing they wind tunnels, and they really gain a lot of strength. Whenever we see and hear those wind tunnels, the only way to describe them is this highpitched screeching sound, that is when we see the cranes sway even more. Of course a huge tern for anyone living in the high rises in downtown miami. City officials advised people to evacuate. Our weather team advised us you have to add a category in order for you to realize how the wind speed is in a lot of these highrise buildings. The one behind me they appeared to have heeded the warning. I dont see any Patio Furniture, which is one of thing that city officials recommended. They needed to removed everything from their balconies. They become projectiles in a storm. John, breast it or in the, we saw a family go through here. We didnt get to talk to them. They were driving so fast. It looked like they were trying to evacuate at this hour. That, of course, what city officials and First Responders are not recommending. The conditions are very dangerous at this hour. John . First responders not responding to calls in all of miami date cow. Not safe for them to be out. Thats just here in miamidade. The entire east coast of southern florida feeling the impact. I want to go up the coast to brian todd, whos in west palm beach. Brian . Reporter john, we intense wind activity kicking up in the last couple hours. What we are vulnerable to you is to tornadoes. Most of the energy will popup tornadoes will you a threat all day. That means flying debris, tree snapping, wires coming down. We got word from a city official that they do have word of a tree pinching down a wire. Storm surge is also a threat here. Were by the intercoastal waterway. Down there you can see the intensity again that walkway as the waves slap up against it. Thats only going to get worse as the conditions worsen. Were going to try to walk over this way. As youve been reporting that cracking of the crain in miami, officials have been worried about that for several days. There are two large construction cranes just off my right shoulder. Theyve got swaying a bit. There are two other construction cranes further down the block. What is unique here is that these construction cranes are right next to apartment buildings in some cases. Weve taught to residents who said they are really afraid of the cranes coming down on that. South on flagleer street, we talked to a resident right next to her building, and she said she was very concerned. Also, john, over here is a construction site with a lot of loose debris flying. As they tornadic conditions start to impact here in west palm beach, we have to keep a close eye on that. You can see the strain on these trees. We have a crain in napl, so far so good. We have the city manager on. There have been gusts here reported in excess of 70 miles an hour. Not a big deal, but were also hours away from what was supposed to be the bad stuff. So theres a concern about the consistency of the beating and duration of the water and what that will mean to a vulnerable and lowlying area. Lets get to chad myers. You gave me a piece of information of i checked with the city manager, you are right. They are seeing what looks like to be a wild phenomenon. The water seems to be reasseting. Yes. You were right about something else. It fuels false optimism. What is the reality . The reality is that the water is getting blown out of naples, getting blown out of tampa bay, all of the rivers on the west seed, because the wind is blowing into that direct. Miami is almost six foot above low tide and still going up. Here as the new track, brandnew track, it takes the storm over just about ft. Myers as a landfall, if we call it that, skirtsing the coast, significantly grinding the coast all the way down into ft. Myers. Thats the problem. Its not going to lose power. As the storm goes by, chris, your wind will shift to this direction, so all the water that went out is going to come crashing back in. Do not go into your canal and pick up something that you lost after your boat two weeks ago. You need to stay out of the water. That water will cup crashing back in. I heard you have an interview with someone in marco. Marco will be under water. I know hes on the second or third floor, but so what . The west of your building is under water. All the utilities, all the power is under wear. Theres the radar, because key west has failed, probably not that unusual during a hurricane, but miami is not giving out any signals either. So we will lose miami here, theyre going to try to take it down and bring it back um. That will push the water into the everglades. 10 to 15 feet deep. That will flood marco cape coral, and from Bonita Springs to naples, 10 to 15foot storm surges as the storm goes pup, then the west coast pushing water onto the east coast. Expect coastal flooding, especially at high tide. On this side and even into i would say the cocoa beach area. Look at the wind gusts were expecting. This is over the entire storm. Well see a wind gust of key west of 135. So far we have no number, because theres nothing to measure it. We saw someone on the ground at 131. Obviously thats unconfirmed. For miami, its just getting going. The eye is not as close as well get. For you, chris, the eye is still on the way. The story is this storm, as it moves up the west and as it moves on the east coast of florida, and obviously what is going to happen . That is the big question, on the west coast here later in the day as the hurricanesforce winds begin to make landfall on the west coast. A lot of places which, as early as two days didnt expect to be bearing the brunt of this storm, are now going to be doing just that. I want to go to senator bill nelson. How concerned are you about citying like napes, ft. Myers and storm the level of a direct hit since 1921. Very concerned. We talked about this yesterday, anderson, the phenomenon of this hurricane is that a few days ago it was going to be an east coast hurricane, andi knotts shifted to the west coast, and indeed, as it comes up that west coast, the counter clockwise winds are going to drive the water up into the bays and estuaries, so youre in tampa. That water is going to wall up in tampa bay, because it has no outlet. The same thing south of you at charlotte harbor, just north of punta gorda. Chad myers was just explaining why the water is receding, because its counter clockwise wednesday at the north of the hurricane are moving it westward, but when it gets further north, then the winds reverse and the waters cup back. That will a be part of this storm. Some people saying tampa bea essentially habits like a funnel, funneling water into these inlets, these rivers, and flooding as you know, in a place like tampa, clearwater, st. Petering burg, even in heavy rains sometimes they have issues with flooding, increasingly, and problems with getting that water out. I just talked to congresswoman caster, to go get her mother and stepfather and get them out of bayshore drive in tampa, because all that water is going to come north in tampa bay, and then its not going to have any place to go. He said look if a cat 3 storm hits, that area will be under 15 feet of water. We dont exactly what left of water the storm surge will be. The estimate were 5 to 8 feet for the tampa petersburg area, but again, thats 5 to 8 feet of water rise. Then depending on these winds, youll have waves on top of that water. Its not just five feet, eight feet of water, maybe doesnt sound so bad, but that wind action creates winds of potential very high waves. And then you figure the tides, if its at high tide, that all the moorad it is to the complication, but i think the people are prepared for it, as much as they ever have been a rea shoutout to the Hurricane Center and service, theyve been spot on from the tracking. They get all this stuff from the noaa satellites, from the plane that flies in the middle of the hurricane. They are spot on. Yesterday brock long, from family ooh, said there could be millions pout pow, po tench ale for weeks in some areas. That is got to be a big concern to you. Exactly. This storm has covered up the whole state of florida. Already you got three quarters of a Million People in the miami area without power. As the storm moves north over the entire state, you can a imagine the amount of power outage. That is the slow grind, the slow slog in the aftermath of the hurricane in the humid heat. The good news is so far gusts of about 70 miles an hour, steady rain for hours, but no major situation, we are starting to see the water recede here, which is part of the phenomenon of Energy Movement within a hurricane. That water will return and with it a lot more of storm surge which will bring energy, water and trouble t the bad news is we have seen nothing yet. Heres what happened to that crain. We just had a wind gust at Miami International to 93. Up 30 stories, thats 108. You go up to some of the tallest cranes still building buildings in miami, thats over 115. 1 goes up with height. Thats why that crain failed, john. We do have that crain, we are also getting new pictures of flooding here. I cannot see much of anything frankly with the rain in nigh face. Pet still have that surge, when we talked about the surge, its blown through and into biscayne bay. The water has pushed up into the city itself. You can see the amount of water thats at least a couple people, and unless those buildings are raised a bit, water is and high tide isnt here yesterday. The wind will still be in there for and i believe the water will continue to go up. The water behind me, you can see that dock gut out to the jet skis, and the water lapping over. What you could see is theres three docks completely under about a foot of water where we are it standing. About three to six feet. If it reaching the sixfoot level, it would be up to my knees. We are going tore very careful. Out there is miami beach, in a serious concern as well for storm surge. Its also where kyung lah has been founding. Chad, i want to go back to you. Sure, john, everything will change in a hurricanes and what changed over the week was from where he thought was a possibility of a direct landfall in miami shiftd about 60 miles to the west. Hurricane center always had the west coast involved. And the model did a truly regardingable job. Five days in advantage, you know, i would love that for a snowstorm in the wind in a we could plan it five days in advantage. So the european model did a bit better, but you see the water on that live shot there on the right. You need to go when they clear it up. That intracoastal will be the area that may push more water up intoford lauderdale with a surge is typically not a problem, but its the cuts in the islands where the water is truly rushing through. I want to reiterate a point that chad made. Tampa, which may get the worst of it, always in the cone that chad has been talking about for a few days, so the forecast has been dead on. As for mime where i am at right now, which may not get it, stilled bad any of. They needed to as i was saying before, out there is miami beach, more low lying than where im standing right now, and the winds have been gusting even harder. Thats where kyung lah has been braving the winds for hour. Reporter john, it feels like hour. It has been pelting us throughout. It certainly has picked up. They end up being projectiles. Thats concerning the city officials here. Thats why they have said that they wanted a mandatory evacuation. Thankfully we have not seen too many people walking out and below. We have seen storm chaser, but other than that, its been pretty desolate. The reason is you cannot stand in this too long. My producer volunteered to go to the beach, and he did not see any impact of a storm surge yet. The concern was he would get indicate and they would drown, but right now the biggest concern is the wind. A lot of these buildings have they have protection against the windows. We are fine a so far all the cocon coconuts, they appear to be gone. The pet spect tiff we want to share is this is not the worth of it. Could get worse. This high rise that you see behind me, the good news, none of the Patio Furniture is there. That was removed. As we pan over, we see one of these cranes. We know theres between 20 and 25 cranes. They two have survived. We have confirmed another crane further north did crack. That one snapped. We are about to move our position to show you some of that water that is coming in from the ocean. Im storm surge, of course, this is the ocean coming inland. People that are walking not advised because of the dangerous, not only because of the winds, but because of projectiles and now storm surge. John . All right. Rosa flores, checking out the storm surge for us shortly. Lets go to david hall stead for the state of florida, and david, lets talk about what were seeing right now in miami. Let me prefats this. That could be on the west coast the florida, but we do have some developments we do need to talk about. Number one, the storm surge, the water is starting to go into some of those streets in downtown, david, what should people be concerned about there. Well, certainly again the flying debris that weve been talking about is critical to further damage, but the water as it comes in, obviously we need to be aware of downed power lines, people that in fact can get themselves in trouble. Much of that water would be contaminated, as mixed with septic or sewer water or other chemicals, gas station, et cetera, so walking in it, being in it is not such a good idea. David, i could use you to lean on, the other develop here in miami just over the last hour is this crane. The first wort is it was cracked, and then collapsed. The terminology might not be important. The important thing is this crane. Part of it has toppled over onto a building under construction. More than 20 of these cranes in miami, now still Officials Say do not go to that area. Weve got several hours more of these stormforce winds here. How concerned should people be in the city . I would say with the cranes especially, staying away from them, probably even thousands of feet. If this crane lets loose and comes down, the wind will stake it to some extent and make it a flying missile. How far it goes depends on the wind speed and obviously the weight of the crane. So its very important we stay away from them. I notice law infers hadnt has done their best to evacuate buildings close to that, though i heard a reporter in west palm say they did not evacuate the building where some of those cranes are at. Were not even in the worse of the storms yet. No, were about the worst of it maybe in miami, but the worst part will go around the peninsula and up the west coast in miami beach. First responders saying they cannot answer the calls right now. And then up the west coast, were starting to hear from city after city where theyre going to impose curfews, what is the thinking behind that . I can tell you from an Emergency Management and used to be a former fire chief also, youre at the point now of the dark side of the moon. Remember the apollo spacecraft when they lost communication, really sight and no way to know what is happening. No crew could help them. This is the same thing with Emergency Management and response right now. We have everyone hunkered down, we could really put our eyes and ears on what goes happening form in some cases we are losing communication, we will lose more of it as the storm moving up the west coast of florida. Until we can get our eyes set and really visibly look at whats happened, were not going to have a good sense of it. I can tell you the Emergency Responders are prioritizing the 911 calls. In some cases, i know my firefighters brothers and sisters are probably maybe ig noor some of that stay in place depending on the criticality of the call, but theyre stacking them up and will be ready to go. Continuing couldnt in miami, the rain is starting to come down heavier now in tampa, but again, just a small taste of what is to come later today, as those winds are going to be reaching Hurricane Force winds upwards as high as 130 miles an hour, according to the latest estimates, and that storm surge, the most which would come after it just saw a rescue vehicle, i believe it was Fire Department crossing over the bridge. So there are still rescue personnel responders out there on the streets. The mayor of tampa have told people that this is the time that its struck nearly noon in terms of your ability to get to a shelter. You need to do that now, because this is just going to get worse and worse over the next few hours. I want to show you what one of our affiliate reporters saw on brickell avenue. Look at this street, we have parking decks and a massive tree that just fell out. Were a bit protected from the elements and then you have these chars. This will be the major problem, by the moment, this is coming in from the biscayne bay. Were not too far from where you guys are located actually up on north bay village. Were down in midtown here in miami. You can see the water just coming in from the bay, which is just behind these buildings here, and will be a major problem. You can see it happening before our eyes here. This tree was up just about 15 minutes ago, and then all of a sudden it just topples. They objects, of course, becoming projectiles in all of this as well, which is the other major issue out here as well. We wanted to show you how this storm surge is impacting, here in midtown miami, same deal, and then you have and these cars will likely be under water sometime soon. This water moving in very fast, lapping over the sea wall. The sea wall you cant even see it actually, i should say. Waves are just crashing onto the land at this point, and then this is the aftermath. So thats our story here in midtown for now, but well snd it back to you. The rain is really coming down. Anyone in the tampa bay area watching, do not come out. Theres people throughout the morning who have come out, just wanted to check the water, walk around. Its really now starting to come down. This is the time you really need to stay at home. I want to check in with john berman. John, high winds all throughout the morning. How is it now . Yeah, same advice you just gave to the people of tampa. Dont come out. If youre in miami, dont come out because were starting to see areas that are concern. In the brickell area, the water coming up there. Some parts with a whole lot of water on it right now. There is concern about the storm surge. And you can see behind me right now, again, theres that dock with the jeltskies over there, the water lapping over it. What you cant see is these other docks that have already been covered. Weve got about a foot and a half to go before it comes up and we have to go. High tide here, were almost there. It might be this is as high as it gets. We can hope. But the rest of downtown miami already seeing some water on the ground. And the concern with the high winds and particular with the high rises here, earlier they were getting gusts of 100 mile per hour. Want to listen right now to our affiliate. Lets listen in. You probably still have power, and youre just going to have to ride this thing out and hope that this water is going to recede some point soon. But, man, look at the wind whipping. And just to give people a perspective, you are familiar with downtown miami. How many blocks away are you from the bay . And did i hear you say as far as deep it is, possibly how high . So the Miami Police Officer who i just spoke to said to him in the highest areas, like in the middle of the intersection down there, he thinks in the middle it could be getting up to his neck. So, you know, yolk he was exaggerating. Its definitely over the waist. Theres no question its over waistdeep. Because when i walking it a little while ago, i backed off because it gets very, very deep. And were probably, i would guess, three blocks from the bay. When it wasnt as deep, i was able to walk out there and look down one of the streets, and i could see a sailboat and see it sort of moving it in the wind. And it appears where we are, three blocks from the bay is under water like this. All right, you can hear about the concerns with storm surge now. Brickell avenue here in downtown miami, thats the story here right now, anderson. Lets go back to you in tampa. And i think what a people dont realize is that storm surge coming in the tampa area, the worst of it may come after an hour or two after the Hurricane Force winds have hit at the hardest point. It is safe to say nobody alive in tampa or in any of this area has ever seen a storm like the one that is headed towards this city, headed towards this area, headed towards the west coast of florida. 1921 was the last time the city of tampa was hit by a storm in the category 3 rachk. Not a lot of people lived there, but it did expensive damage at that time.
