Political merger, trumpbart. Its steve ban nnen who may be e inner voice of this campaign. Until tuesday he was the far right center of breitbart. Hes a man who loves a fight, hes been building up breitbart to become a fox news competitor, now that hes aligned with trump, his support is likely to shape the rest of the election season. The Hillary Clinton campaign is already bracing for a scorched earth strategy. Lets get some information from two people who know about breitbart. He resigned earlier th excluse profile of bannon. You interview bannonfor your profile. When you see this coverage of bannon this week, did we accurately cover him as a street fighter who will help trump get to the white house . I think theres a fair characterization of steve bannon. Hes an interesting character. He made it up through the ranks of goldmansachs, and has now built breitbart. Com as a legitimate Media Organization. And hes a provocateur by hitting stories that really get his audience going in very vitriolic ways. Lets get some detail about that. Kirt, i know you have strong feelings about breitbart, i know you were disgusted by how breitbart treat really for the last year, year and a half in the republican primary, they have been the Rapid Response arm of the Trump Campaign. Any time Rapid Response arm of the Trump Campaign. Lets underscore that. Youre saying its even further to the right than fox news . They make fox news look like msnbc, i think that any time there was a controversy, something that trump may have said that was generating headlines, breitbart was the First Destination that you could go do at the time to see what the donald trump side of the story was. If anyone would mischaracterize trump you were the former ceo of npr, and does it disturb you to have a Rapid Response arm for the Trump Campaign, is it inappropriate to have that kind of merger happening . So, look, that merger happened, it is trumpbart as people have known it. I dont think of breitbart as a news media arm. I think a lot about whats going on is you know, theyre not theyre a competitor of fox news, but they hate fox news, they hate the republican establishment, thats really what this is about. So its a political movement, and its the alignment of two political figures, trump and bannon to try to politicize media. After the rise of sarah palin in the 08 campaign, the far right really didnt have any blase to go. We saw the far right that resulted in republicans taking back the house, but there was a string of electoral failures as they tried to make on Mitch Mcconnell and the Chris Mcdaniel race in kansas. This group of people didnt have a place to go that was centralized nor a political figure to get behind. And trump and breitbart. Com to organize for the first time in donald trump. Youre such a critic of this site. I want you to say one nice thing about breitbart. What they do in motivating their audience, and playing to the audiences passion. And steve bannon has gone from what many consider as an outlier, not part of any main stream Political Force to becoming the number one guy for the candidate for president of the united states. Lets talk about the other advisors surrounding trump, its not pretty clear that roger ailes, the ousted fox news ceo is also in trumps inner circle. Dana bash asked conway about this, let me play her comment first, take a look. Is roger ailes actively advising donald trump at this point . He obviously has no formal or informal role in the campaign, but mr. Trump speaks to many different people. Roger ailes is a genius when it comes to television and when it comes to communicating with people, but so is trump. Shes threading a needle here, saying ailes is advising trump, the man, but not advising the Trump Campaign. Given the controversy about the Sexual Harassment allegations against ailes . I would say thats probably the least of the challenges for the Trump Campaign. I mean, what trump is doing i think now is surrounding himself with people who have an instinctively and practiced knowledge about how to communicate with a certain part of the republican public. They are good, theyre probably the best there are advising on how to connect with his audience, it may be expanding a little bit, but its really not how can donald trump be trump in the most effective way. He lost control in that way, now hes trying to get people who can help him be himself. Lets talk about what may happen saf november, theres been a lot of speculation, about what trump wants to launch a Media Company, if he loses the election, Something Like donald trump tv. Let me sprplay for both of you t trump said in south carolina. Hes not just saying were all feeling, were all disgusting, hes actually talking about media critique thats just not being covered. The establishment media doesnt cover whats really happening in this country or whats really going on in peoples lives. Just imagine if the media spent times and lots of time investigating the poverty and joblessness of the inner cities. Just think about how much Different Things would be if the media in this country sent their cameras to our border, to our closing factories, or to our failing schools. Donald trump, assignment editor, i would say some of that is being covered, but kurt, i wonder when you hear from donald trump, is he basically suggesting what his pitch would be for a Media Company after he loses, this is what his channel would be all about . There is no doubt that there is a broader play being planned about the trump brand being extended beyond the election. I think theres an under estimation of trump and when media entity in steve bannon, when you know hes regularly having conversations with roger ailes who was at the top of fox news. Look what hes doing and look at his messaging. Hes making the case every day, of when he loses this election it will be because the media had it out for him and we need an alternative to make sure that it doesnt happen again. It writes himself. What do his allies need to know if they do want to launch a Media Company . I guess ill disagree a little bit with that narrative. This is about extending the trump brand past november, but i dont think its about necessarily launching a new Media Organization. The Media Organization that is the critique that donald trump just described as been around since andrew breitbart. I think this is about extending the trump and the populous brand so its not a transitional brand like the tea party or the dave brats of the world. It is about in my mind what happens next after november in terms of the future of the republican party. Can the right become the right . And i think thats the nature of the conversation. One thing i know that steve has been interested in for a long time, is to extend breitbart to extend the cable media. If trump loses, will he try to launch a channel . Its very hard in this day and age to launch a new channel, but if anybodys going to do it, it will be donald trump and steve bannon. Just like you can find news that you agree with online, you can also find polls that you agree with. Listen to how Trump Campaign special Council Michael cohen reacted to the mention of trump trailing in the polls by cnns brianna keeler. You guys are down. Says who . Polls, most of them, all of them . Says who . Polls, i just told you, i answered your question. Which polls . All of them. Now says who became a meme, cohen told me he was also misconstrued, but he also said in that segment that he didnt agree with the polls. Its become a theme among some Trump Supporters, not all of them, we have heard it on fox news this week, and not all republicans and fox newsers are not so quick to dismiss the data. Dana parino said that the its a real disservice to the supporters to lie to them and say that the polls dont matter. You cant take 12,000 supporters at your rallies, they cant show up at the campaign and then say the polls are wrong. She actually doubled down on her defense after receiving some backlash online. Listen to what she told bill oreilly. Even the candidate and his supporters starting to tell the voters, that the polls are rigged, thats not true. The crowd size matters more than the polls, thats not true. Are we in a pick your own poll environment . Is it a good thing . Joining me to discuss this is nate silver, the founder and chief of 538. You and i both remember unskewed polls in 2012. There was some mitt romney supporters who were saying the polls wrong and romney is actually going to win. It started early, that mostly took place quite late in the campaign. Here were in august, theres time for things to turn around. People are not paying as much attention to politics. But you are already seeing various forms of cherry picking to outright denialism. What do the denialists say . In 2014, we heard from democrats about how youre under counting minority voters and turns out they didnt show up in great numbers and democrats lost in the midterms by more than the poll numbers. First of all, if youre explaining youre not revise your strategy. But historically, thats a really bearish indicator, that somehow you recognize that the race has got on away from you. I put up drudge just now. The headline on the drudge report this morning, media shock, donald trump back in lead . This is a Los Angeles Times usc poll. Because cnn doesnt normally report this poll. This is actually a tracking poll, its very different from other polls, why . Its an online poll, and they have the same group of people they poll over and over again. There are dozens of polls being released, just this morning, showing trump down six points in ohio, hes down six points in ohio, hes probably not ahead two points nationally. And looking at national averages, they probably have a 6 point or a 7 point or an 8 point lead. You can find some polls showing clinton up by double digits in swing states and nationally. Let me ask about the l. A. Times poll, why do you not have a problem with it . Some say the way the questions are worded are is misleading, some say the sampling size is an issue r they right . We mostly use polls for comparing the trends in the individual polls. Trump can be up in the New York Times polls, because it always tends to have good numbers for trump. It wouldnt be as meaningful as the abc poll or nbc poll. We do have standards for these things. For example cnn doesnt report online only polls, they come from people who are going to opt in, because if youre motivated to take a poll online, it means youre probably more motivated than the average socievoter. If you look at those polls, they might suggest that hes done by 5 or 6 points, and the telephone polls show hes down about 8 or 10 points. Are you surprised that some have suggested that donald trump that someone might not want to admit to someone that they support trump, but on an online poll, theyll be more likely to tell the truth . The online bombs did a better job in predicting the brexit vote. But the primaries pegged trump about right. In fact a little bit high in some states like iowa for example. The focus is that its hard to reach minority voters on the phone, hard to reach Younger Voters on the phone, you can find various ways to adjust for that. But there have been in president ial years undercounting of democrats instead of republicans. So youre saying if theres a hidden trump vote, there could be a hidden clinton vote as well . On election day, it could be clinton plus one, it could also be clinton plus eight. So theres a margin of error in every poll . Sometimes the poll do not peg or turn out right. For example something last minute might shift. I think trump can win this election, our models do too. I also think its worse for clinton. You were a famous trump skeptic in the primaries, you have admitted you were wrong in some ways, what have you done to reset your opinion in the fall . In some ways just taking the polls at face value and not trying to overthink them. If you say, look, hes down by 6 or 7 points, taking the polls at face value and not expecting some miracle pivot, not expecting some news that greatly shakes things up. Ironically the Trump Campaign looks so smart by touting the polls in the primaries and now theyre denying the very same data points that made frankly a lot of people like me look foolish back in the spring. Bottom line, when we see Trump Supporters and trump spokes people quoting the l. A. Times poll, people are cherry picking. You have a polling average, it takes six or seven or eight polls, i do think the race has tightened by a point or two, thats what our model says. Theres a lot of things the Trump Campaign still has to do, and they have a fair amount of time and if they want to have a shot at beating clinton, they need to look at the race differently is more in line with what they need to do. Thank you very much. Up next here, Hillary Clinton avoiding the press, is that just a trump talking point or is it a real issue for journalists. Xarelto. If donald trump has a lovehate relationship with the press, which you can argue he does. The media has a love relationship with Hillary Clinton. She says the right things about the value of journalism, but she does print a problem for the press, its her lack of accessibility. More than trump and his surrogates. Hillary clinton avoids doing press conferences. Because she doesnt want to answer the questions. I know here people achbltd her supporters are protecting her by not letting her talk to the press. Im happy to talk to you, but she doesnt respect you the way we do. Hillary clinton has continuously refused to have a press conference in one full year. Donald trump continuously calls into tv shows, continually does press conferences. Hillary clinton is so protected, she hasnt had a News Conference in like 150 days. The Washington Post headline calls it ridiculous that clinton has not had a press Conference Since last december. Theres debate about what a press conference is and well get into this. But we want to get into clintons press statty. We did reach out for a spokesperson, but they declined to come on the program this morning. So lets go to a person who has experience with covering clinton. A White House Correspondent whos also covering the president ial race for npr. Good morning, good to see you. The last press conference was in december, fullfledged press conference, why does that matter . Its up to 260 days on the counter that tthe Washington Post has set up. Why does it matter . She has been available in interviews, she has done what you would call like a gaggle or a scrum in an ice cream shop where she takes five or six questions, usually on the news of the day. What would be really useful with a press conference is that press conferences kind of build on themselves. Think of a president ial press conference, somebody asks the first question, and the first answer is the answer they want to give. And then you look for the thing that theyre leaving out. If there is a particular issue that youre trying to get information on. So with the press conference, you can pull out more information, or you can or it will be more clear that the candidate simply isnt answering. Thats the journalistic reason. Theres also the strategy about why shes not giving a press conference . Shes trying to sit on her lead, right . From a purely strategic standpoint. But realistically, and for the public discourse, were right to demand press conferences, arent we . I want a press conference, absolutely. The Clinton Campaign has its own podcast now, where Hillary Clinton is talk directly to her voters. She isnt the first person who invented this, president obama had fewer press conferences than president bush did who had fewer press conferences than president clinton did. As they have found ways to go around us, they dont need to use us to get their information out in the same way, and they simply, from a strategic standpoint for the Clinton Campaign, there isnt a lot of upside in doing the press conference because i think the public would benefit from our asking questions. The answer that i got, is that she answers questions all the time. Shes done 375 interviews. That isnt exactly what it sounds like, 375 interviews, some of those are very short, with local reporters, what would not be considered a very accessible interview, right . I did get to do an interview of her. It was the day that president obama endorsed her. So i was told i had three minutes for an interview. So when you have three minutes for the interview and theres news, you tend to ask more about the news and you dont get into policy questions, like how to make tpp a better policy. She recently had a press conference with the National Association of black journalists and hispanic journalists, did she take questions from journalists . She did take questions from journalists, but it was not a press conference type environment. It did feel to me like a panel or Something Like that. It did not have the feel of an extendinged press conference. Journalists are always going toed to advocate for more press conferences. There have been these conspiracy theories floating around rpgs they started kind of in the fever swamps of fox news. Let me tell you what Rudy Giuliani said on fox news sunday. Fails to point out several signs of illness by her. What you got to do is go online. Her campaign and a number of people defending her says theres nothing factual to the claims about her health. Go online and put in Hillary Clinton illness, and look for yourself. Im pretty worried about him saying go online and google it. But from the clinton beat reporter perspective, have you tried to ask about her health and have you perceived any issues about her health . I have not asked about her health, i have not had the opportunity to do that. They have put out a statement from her doctor. I have been there following Hillary Clinton around, i dont quite know how she does it, because my health is suffering following her. Its a grueling schedule. Your health is suffering following her . Because its so many hours, so many days in a row . I dont go to the gym anymore, i dont get enough sleep, this is my dream job, but shes up there giving speeches and all im doing is writing stories. But to be clear, this week shes out doing fundraisers, shes not on vacation this week, right . Shes raising a lot of money this weekend. Well find out exactly how much when the final reports come out. But she stacks up the fundraisers. But what im saying is we dont have any concrete evidence of any kind of illness. Not from what i have seen and i have been pretty close to the candidate. I have seen stools, but tim kaine sits on them too. Im sitting on a stool right now. So am i. These days it seems like almost all News Coverage is about the president ial election and Everything Else gets squeezed out. When baton rouge and other parts of louisiana were inundated by a historic flood this time last week, many wonder why werent more National Reporters there . Was there a real under covered situation here . If you ask local residents they will say yes. Heres one of the headlines from the local news outlets, National Media fiddle as louisiana drowns, one resident said there was scant National Media coverage of the floods. Heres what dan rather wrote on facebook earlier this week. He said if residents of louisiana are watching tv news they must be feeling woefully forgotten. If these floods were happening in washington, d. C. Or new york or san francisco, would the coverage be different . The answer is yes. This dramatic rescue video from the flooding which was widely covered, i saw reporters there this time last weekend, and reporters are still there today. But the flooding in and around baton rouge is the worst Natural Disaster to hit the u. S. Since superstorm sandy. Did the media drop the ball when covering this event and if so, why . One of my favorite meteorologists, eric, warm, regards, good to see you. Whats the realty check here about the initial coverage of the flood this time last week, did the press fall down on the job . Yeah, i think absolutely. This time last week, we were hear about twitter, mostly, and i think that this is the sort of disaster that were going to start seeing more of. Thats what worries me. Thats what the underlying story thats missed, even here today. We still have anonymous storm, thats hit a relatively anonymous place, theres been a lot of disasters, theres a lot of fatigue in the media about louisiana, the flooding. At the same time i want to get to the Climate Change part in a moment. Let me ask about the no name. Sandy, katrina, these are remembered because they had named issued by the National Storm prediction center. Flooding is a larger killer on average than hurricanes and tornadoes in the u. S. On an annual average. And when was the last time you saw tv cut in for a Flood Warning or Something Like that. We had the National Weather service was on this storm religiously and they were using dire warnings, words i havent heart very often, catastrophic flooding was imminent. It felt a little like meteorologists were just sort of screaming into the ether, hoping for coverage because when you have when youre seeing bullseye of rain over a certain place for a couple of days in the forecast, and then it starts happening, its like, i mean, this is we had high water rescues, we had, you know, people being lifted out off the roof from helicopters. And this is exactly the sort of thing that you would expect the networks and the National Media to cover. And there just wasnt. And to be clear, it was horrible there, it was not katrina level in terms of injuries or deaths. Also there were cnn reporters there, many news media outlets, but it wasnt the lead story, wall to wall, the way it might have been in a nonelection year. The election is one factor, but flooding, is it just harder to cover . It happens more slowly . Whats the difference between a flood and a hurricane from a coverage perspective . Its a slow onset disaster just like a drought is s we get a lot of California Drought coverage, but again, not nearly as much as there should b drought is among the costliest Natural Disaster in the u. S. On average per year, and its just it doesnt make necessarily for, if you have missed that moment where you those tremendously heart wrenching flood water rescues like you showed, once you miss those clips, then theres not a whole lot to cover, except for people clearing out their houses of all their belongings and all their kids art work, its a gut wrenching tragedy, but its not as sexy as a tornado. And then they ask for donations, et cetera, et cetera, and as you point out, its not g got to be connected to Climate Change, that these events are happening more and more often due to Climate Change. Great to see you, thank you for being here. Right after the break, a comment on all the coverage this week about the trump shakeup and it wasnt called that right away. Well be right back. When trump promoted kellyann conway and you know that campaigns dont typically shake things up when they are winning this close to the election. Its an expansion. No one believes that. Look at the words you use and you blast. Shakeup, overhaul, dramatic, desperate measures. There are no desperate measures. If Hillary Clinton brought somebody in, would you use the word overhaul . Yes. Not one person of the 900 people that work for her campaign, not one has left or been promoted or demoted . At the top we have not seen that. If that happened, we would cover it like that. You would never hear about it. I disagree with you and personally i covered the Clinton Campaign. I would be all over that. That would be a huge story. To be the advocate. Trochl has strong advocates, but i can understand why you might feel like these introduce have limited value. They separate fact from fantasy. Let me show you why. Spinning, spinning. We feel good about expanding this team. Some call it a shakeup and it is not. It doesnt feel that way. Define for us why this change was necessary . That comment at the end of the week seemed like an honest answer.
