Excluding his last name bush. On tuesday, maybe donald trump . He is making some sort of a announcement announcement. This morning well peel back the curtain on calculations shaping who you see on tv throughout this campaign season. There is already a debate raging about who gets to be on the stage. Now, imagine, 15 or 20 candidates. It will be bad tv. It would stifle any, you know actual debating. So fox news channels solution for its august 6th debate is to limit it to the ten candidates faring best in national polls. Two debates, two tiers, a b team of lowerranking candidates and an a team for the ones polling the highest. These ideas are causing republicans to fight awfully hard to get and stay in the top ten. The Republican NationalCommittee Supports the networks, but some state Party Members hate this. Look at this letter signed by more than 50 prominent New Hampshire gop members and sent to the rnc and fox news demanding that the rules be change. The proposed limitations are unnecessarily narrow and risk eliminating potentially viable candidates based on unreliable polling thats rarely predictive. Theyre saying the rules are undemocratic. Denineing a candidate a chance to make their cases. This letter has directed to fox because they had plans for only that one debate. After the letter fox offered a compromise. Involving a forum in the afternoon for a the lower ranking candidates on the same day as the prime time debate for the higher rankingen candidates. Lets hear from one of the signers of the letter. Jeff bradley and the rncs chief strategist and Communications Director shaun spiteser. Welcome to you both. Thanks. Glad to be here. Jeff what is your position about these debate rules that only allow ten on the main stage. I understand the need to try to have some discipline in the process. At the same time youre going to exclude what could be viable candidates here in New Hampshire. And i think speaking for a state that has done a really good process of electing president s over the years it really should be the voters who get to winnow out the candidates not the party and not the media. And i think a candidate like former senator santorum or governor kasich or Carly Fiorina or governor pa tacky or Governor Jindal would be excluded right now if the polls were in effect today. I dont think thats appropriate. The fact of the matter is 2012 there were 30 candidates on the New Hampshire ballot. There were 26 on the iowa ballot. What youre talking about, senator, is you or other folks want to decide who can be it. Youre asking a level of subjectivity. If its not polling, then what is the level . Youre not going to have 30 people on it. You keep describing credible candidates. What is a credible candidate . Seems to me what you and a lot of folks who signed the letter is you want to determine who the credible candidates are. I give fox and cnn credit for saying its not just going to be the top ten that get air time but any candidate over 1 will get air time. Looking at history, a lot of candidates last cycle at this point we would have had two gop debates under the belt neither of which are mitt romney in them. That doesnt mean you wont be in the third, fourth or fifth debate. New hampshire is six months away. There is plenty of time for a candidate so sit around New Hampshire or iowa. I think New Hampshire voters offer that opportunity to any candidate. You can sit there and have oneonone discussions with people throughout the state and get your numbers up. If thats the case by the time you hit the New Hampshire primary, youre going to be in great shape. Jeb, you were shaking your head earlier. I really couldnt disagree with shaun more. I couldnt disagree with him more. The Party Apparatus is trying to pick winners and losers. Its not for the Party Hierarchy to do. Its for voters to do. The early voting states. New hampshire, iowa South Carolina florida, do a good job of winnowing out those candidates. Sean you should leave these decisions to voters. Senator, i dont understand it because that doesnt mean anything. When you say leave it to voters, at the end of the day answer me this. Last cycle you had 30 candidates on the New Hampshire ballots. Do you expect 30 people to get on the debate stage at any time . In New Hampshire people put their names on the bat ott with no intention of becoming president. No question of that. Youre excluding how do you decide . Excuse me. Youre excluding, senator santorum who got the second most delegates last time because he hasnt cracked the top ten yet. Or governor kasich the governor of a very big, industrial state, critical for republicans to be able to win the presidency with the Electoral College votes. I mean why would we be excluding gofrvernor kasich. The idea anyone has been excluded is crazy. How do you decide that . Youre excluding them from the debate. Some havent even announced. Secondly when you look at what fox and cnn did, they took what was a historic number of people on stage and said well create a second segment so any candidate receiving over 1 can get on the stage. Santorum or maybe else with 1 will get air time. Thats historic in the amount of air time were offering any candidate that gets above that. I dont see how you can argue that thats not a great opportunity for any candidate. Let me ask if we can find Common Ground by pointing out that maybe this is the least bad option. Can we agree that the networks are trying to find the least worst way to do this by setting up frankly, a main debate for the top candidates but offering a secondary area a secondary forum, for the lowertier candidates . Would you agree with that jeb . I think if it were structured so some of the toptier candidates shared a debate stage with some of the other candidates that are at that 1 level, then i would agree with that. But basically youre creating two strata of candidates the ones that have been picked by the media based on polls and ones that havent done quite as well as the polls. Its going to be tenths of percents of difference between the 10th and 11th and 12th. Its been referred to as the childrens table exactly. Isnt that troubling for the rnc . I think what you want is to have the most inclusive process possible by which everybody has an opportunity to get on the stage and make their case to the american people. To earlystate voters. Unfortunately, sean youre creating a perception that there is a top tier and a second tier and there is almost no argument about that. And when you do that voters react to that because other people in the media and you at the rnc, are making that choice. Why dont you structure the two debates, in that everybody in the 1 gets on the stage. Thats all were asking. No matter how you slice it there is no perfect answer. In 1992 the gentleman leading with 22 was mario cuomo. He never became a candidate. Lets let the system play out. The idea this is a be all end all is ridiculous. Its the first step in a long process. Thanks for being here gentlemen. Much more to come on this. By the way, just this morning, cnn announced jake tapper will be moderating the september debate here on cnn. Tapper will join me in a few minutes. Coming up breaking news about Hillary Clinton. Breaking Campaign News this mornings that members of the Political Press core have been waiting to hear for several months. Hillary clinton is about to start giving interviews. She is in iowa today after holding what was billed to be her first major speech in new york yesterday. 300 reporters got in. It was an issue because there were so many supporters who wanted to be there, et cetera et cetera. A day later it doesnt seem to have been a major speech at all. Maybe that illustrates how the modern ecosystem works. Her next Campaign Stop is at the iowa state fair. Along for the ride is jeff zeleny joining me from des moines today she is ready to meet the press after avoiding to give interviews for months. Im told by iowa reporters that she is expected to give a few interviews to iowa reporters, radio reporters, newspaper reporters, possibly television reporters, which will mark the first time she has taken questions by local press. Its standard fare. All candidates sit down with iowa reporters who have been asking questions of president ial candidates for a long time. Its something theyve expected and something weve all expected. The Clinton Campaign was never planning on not doing interviews throughout this whole process. That would have been impossible and absurd. I am told by a few iowa report reporters that is starts today. Its been frustrating. Candidates have been using this issue against Hillary Clinton. Tell us about that. Sure. Jeb bush has made a point of everywhere he goes he takes questions, and seems like he is taking even more questions and pointing out that Hillary Clinton is not. A lot of other republican candidates have been doing it as well. South carolina i was there a couple weeks ago, Carly Fiorina came outside of a clinton event at the very same spot the same Hotel Ballroom and held a press conference to talk about the fact that secretary clinton was not taking questions. So they have used this a little bit. I think its important to remember its june. If she would have gone throughout the summer and fall without taking questions, that would have been a problem and a big deal. If this is the start of something new today, i think thats a good thing. It shows theyre moving into a new phase of the campaign. Stick around. Im bringing in Jonathan Allen from fox. Com. I wanted to ask you about the piece you wrote yesterday saying Hillary Clintons most important line in her speech was this one. Lets take a listen to it. I may not be the youngest candidate in this race by i will be the youngest woman president in the history of the United States. So john tell us why you think that was the single most important line. I think one of the big mistakes she made in 2008 was refusing to embrace the historic nature of her candidacy, refusing to give women and others certainly some men who see breaking the Glass Ceiling as a bonus or a positive failing to make the personal connection to them. Even more important, when you look at a narrative someone trying to construct a narrative of being a champion for others being able to overcome challenges and help them overcome challenges whether its income gaps workplace unfairness discrimination against gay and lesbian americans, for her to be able to put herself in a position of being somebody who is going to break a barrier, that connects her with the overall narrative of her campaign of being a champion for everyday americans. I think there is a lot loaded into that and not just that you heard her talk about her age. Republicans have talked about her age, tried to paint her as a candidate of yesterday. Thats also part of whats going on here. She is going to try to pull a reversal on that and say, regardless of her age we heard this yesterday. Regardless of her age its the republicans who have old ideas. You unpack the single sentence and i think there is a lot there. I would argue the most important thing she said yesterday. Yet age will continue to be an issue as expected. I want to bring up what i mentioned earlier, which is this idea that a day later the speech doesnt feel that major, but maybe thats because of the way the media is changing. The new face the nation most on cbs made this point on his column. The speech being a buffalo getting passed around in social media. How people hear what they want to hear from a speech and we have a media tailored to that. Emilys list highlights the quote we just mentioned. You can share that on facebook. Or think progress highlighted the comments about climate change. Her going after the gop on climate change. Look at the twitter feed of Hillary Clinton. The most retweeted comment was about her position on gay rights. People can share whatever part of the speech they wanted to share. Maybe, jeff maybe thats why this felt like a laundry list, because they were reaching every constituency they wanted to reach knowing different media sites would carve it up that way. No question there was a laundry list. Some described it as the state of the union. I describe it as ticking through a list of democratic priorities. That does not many it wasnt significant. I was struck by the difference between now what the Democratic Party is talking about now, what candidates have to talk about now in the 2016 campaign versus 2008. It would have been a totally different speech in 2008. So its interesting in that respect. But i think in terms of it not being frontpage news does it matter anymore that its not . The sioux city journal, frontpage news. No question when she visits a town locally its frontpage news. Does it matter that it wasnt on the front page of the New York Times times . Absolutely not. There wasnt anything so brandnew in it. I dont think the campaign was surprised it wasnt on the front page on more newspapers. Theyre more focused on local papers. A negative story in the local press is bad, much worse than a negative story in the national press. Local press. Maybe Digital Media to carve up all the pieces of the speech. This was a made for tv moment for the campaign. They had to get it out of the way . It was absolutely a made for tv moment of the campaign. If she becomes president of the United States the highlight video will start with this speech of the Beautiful Island with matnhattan and the u. N. In the gabbingbackground. She she never lives up to the staging and setting of her speeches. I dont think thats a bad thing this time around. People talked about how this wasnt as soaring rhetorically as the barack obama speech in 2008. A lot of americans and democrats were disappointed by what they saw as failed promises of obama particularly related to this soaring rhetoric about a new way of doing things in washington about a new movement. And so it may be that kind of underperforming on the charisma level is not the worst thing for her. Thanks to both of you for being here. Local press interviews coming up. Maybe softer appearances. Maybe shows like the view. Carly fiorina, the other woman in the race on the gop side will be on the view on tuesday. Xfinity is perfect for people who want more entertainment for their money. Welcome back to reliable sources. This week there will be a historic shift in the media business. There is a Board Meeting at 21st century fox, one of the Biggest Media Companies in the whole world. Rupert murdoch will be handing over the reins to his son james, who will become ceo of 21st century fox. His other son lachlan is moving from australia to los angeles to serve as the coexecutive chairman of the company. There will essentially be a trifecta of power running fox. The legacy of the 84yearold australian has been wildly controversial and profitable spanning newspapers books, tabloids, broadcasting on cable and satellite tv. Will his sons be able to carry the torch. Will Rupert Murdoch loosen his grip . Roger ailes, who does not reportedly get along with the sons very well. Got on variety and said hell expect to continue to report to rupert. Joining me sarah allison, the author of war at the wall street journal. She a contributing editor at vanity fair. Welcome. Thanks for having me. The initial headlines were a big surprise. James to become ceo. There was clarification that this would be a power sharing arrangement. What will really happen after the Board Meeting this week . I think the story that broke was actually it was very dramatic but then turned out that it was almost like opposites day. Because everything that you thought was going to be true from what the story said everyone kept backtracking immediately afterward. Turns out people close to the company tell me his title is changing but his role is not changing. James has one title, lachlan has another title. But im told titles really dont matter. So its one of these things where you immediately are getting these sort of quasi official statements from people that make it seem like it indeed as you said in the beginning of the segment, its a trifecta and, as long as rupert is involved with the company and has executive in his title, he is going to be t is really calling the final shot and, in fact i think he may be even more involved in the company in the near future than he has been just because he wants this well, for a variety of reasons that we can talk about. Key question is whats on the bottom of the screen there. Will the murdoch sons get along. Whats the answer to that question . That is sort of the billion dollar question. Literally the billion dollar question. Its probably more than that. The reason its being asked is there has been tension before. Lachlan has been away from the company for a long time for example. This is the thing that makes people so interested in the murdochs. And interested in the company. Is that there has always been a dynamic. Rupert murdoch raised all of his children talking every morning about the media business. Theyve been weaned on this stuff. And theyre competitive with one another, and theyre competitive because they want to be involved in the business. And i think that the i hope for their sakes that it really works, that they have a complementary partnership, which is what people close to the company keep saying. Theyre very complementary, they have different personalities. Its a difficult thing in a correspondent structure to have two people who are equal to each other. Thats what people are telling me thats the case. James is not above lachlan and vice versa. Theyre going to share the power and the father will be there to sort of call the shots. Who breaks the tie . Rupert breaks the tie. How does that actually work Going Forward is hard to know. This matters because the company is so lorjarge and owns to so many titles. One wrote neither has shown the partisan streak of their father. Is that your belief as well . They dont have the same beliefs or commitment to the Republican Party in the United States that weve seen from rupert and his newspapers at the New York Post . Absolutely. The thing thats interesting about rupert we dont know if his sons will do this he does have a commitment to the Republican Party. Hes very engaged in politics. A lot of that happens through fox news and roger ailes. He is like a heatseeking missile on where politics mightingmight be going, whats the right decision to make in terms of the politics of the moment. James and lachlan as far as i know have different politics than their father but dont really have the same way of wielding power that their father does. James, while in london tried to do that and it never quite hit in the right way. There is the ailes factor. He says hell continue to report to Rupert Murdoch. Ailes contract to run fox news as he has for 20 years is up around this Time Next Year maybe sooner than that according to some media reports. Whats the best understanding of whats going to happen in that relationship . Why will he report to rupert and not the ceo james . I think the way the news corp. And 21st century fox has been run is that its really his company. He and roger have a very fruitful partnership. Theyve done business together for a long time. There is no way that roger ailes would be able to report to james in any kind of real way. Nor to lachlan, for that matter. So i think and he doesnt need to really check in that much. I dont think that he checks in that much with rupert. So its an autonomously run channel. It is. Its also the way that thats the way news corp. Has always run. People who run the individual businesses they talk to rupert but are able to sort of run things the way they want to. There is nobody for whom that is true more than ailes. The other billion dollar question is whether ailes stays, renews his contract next year. So many people cant imagine fox news without ailes. Fox is roger, roger is fox. Absolutely. I think this is the reason for this whole announcement feels very it feels bold but completely tentative. Hmm. James and lachlan are there. Rupert is not going anywhere. Chase kerry, the competent chief operating officer, is stepping down eventually. We dont know exactly when. But rupert wants to put his sons in the business, but hes still keeping all the safety nets there. He still is hes still going to be very involved probably more so. Chase will still be a consultant. He wants these kids to be able to succeed him, but he is not really hes not going away roger ailes is still reporting to him. Chase kerry is still on deck. He is doing it all, i think, in a very sort of hopeful yet tentative way here. So were seeing the beginning of a Succession Plan but only the beginning. Sarah, thanks for being here this morning. Thank you so much. Now to something outrageous that was said here on cnn yesterday. Anchor freed Frederica Whitfield said this about the gunmans actions yesterday in dallas. It was very courageous and brave if not crazy as well to open fire on the police headquarters. Now you have this scene, this standoff. So you believe these are the hall marks of more than one persons involvement. Courageous . The comment was shocking particularly among people who already think channels like cnn take an antipolice tone sometimes. When i woke up this was all over my facebook and twitter feed. The Police Officers association is calling for an immediate apology. I reached out to cnns spokes woman asking for a statement. Im told whitfield will address the comment on air this afternoon and say that she misspoke and she does not believe the gunman was courageous or brave. The in touch scoop races questions about the role of tabloid journalism and whether the reporting went too far, especially when its about victims in some cases who are still under age. Joining me now editorial director david perel. Thanks for being here. The country remains very interested in that story. You have tried to break more news about it this week. Tell us about the most recent reporting. The most recent thing that we found at in touch is the family is once again under investigation by the department of human services. In touch obtained information from another freedom of information act showing that in late may dhs working from Washington County went out to the house, was not allowed in and had to call 911 to be allowed in as they wanted to check on the welfare of a minor child. Weve also learned that the investigation is ongoing. And tlc is an ongoing decline to comment. They will not say if the show will ever come back. At this point i assume it will not. Well see. Tell us how this came about in the first place. How did you dig this up . People hear tabloid magazine and think, oh you must have paid for this information. We certainly did not pay for the information. I think tabloid is a word that actually connotes size of a magazine. Thats a good point. Tabloid has a meaning actually in the print industry. But people hear tabloid and think its about celebrities and might be sleazy. In touch does pay for news but not in this case . Thats true. In this case we did not pay for anything. This is good solid, Investigative Journalism by a good team at in touch magazine. As weve learned through the years, that kind of reporting can come from anywhere. Let me ask you about the issue of the family naming these victims. Some people are under the impression that you named the victims here. The underage sisters. Is that right . No we didnt. Back to your point about the in story about john edwards. I helped with that. Two people have joined me at in touch and broke this story. We never named the victims. We said there were five under age minor victims. Did you consider not reporting this at all . Once you had the documents and had the information, did you consider not covering the story because it could revictimize the girls . We considered every aspect of it. Ultimately what we decided was the news worthiness of it and the fact that this was a Public Document that had to be released and that overrode everything. By not naming the victims we were on the right side of what we felt comfortable doing. A lot of the information was out there in rumor form over the internet. Dont forget that the investigation from the police started when the family was going to appear on the Oprah Winfrey show in 2006. The show called the child abuse hotline four years after the abuse allegations had surfaced. Hmm. When you hear the daughters, two of them on fox news saying that they had been revictimized how did you feel . Did it strike you . I felt that the entire interviews on fox were very heavily prspun. I didnt understand how everybody was minimizing the sexual molestation. It wasnt that bad. Josh was just curious about puberty and then theyd amp up the rhetoric and claimed the police chief had an agenda and took a bribe. It came across as very distorted, a lot of untruths and just things that did not add up. A desperate attempt to save a show that makes some 45,000 a year. I think you mean per episode. Per episode. Im sorry. Plus not to mention the spinoff, books and other products. The ultimate verdict here is delivered by tlc, which pulled the show off the air. 12 major advertisers have left the show and the fate of the show ultimately tlc is Still Deciding as you mentioned. Thats right. If we hear from them well let the viewers know. Thanks for being here. Doing the big things that move an economy. See you tomorrow, mac. See you tomorrow, sam. Just another day at norfolk southern. Welcome back. There is a new face in the sunday morning tv lineup. Today is jake tappers first day moderating cnns state of the union making him the third new host in the last year. Chuck todd took over meet the press last fall and John Dickerson became the face of face the nation last week. Jake tappers first big booking was former president bill clinton. The interview took place on stage at the clinton global initiative. Tapper has been unusually blunt about how these sorts of interviews get booked. He was busy this morning anchoring state of the union so i talked with him earlier about his interview with clinton and about the state of sunday morning tv. Jake thanks for coming on the show. Congratulations on the new show. Thank you so much. Glad to be here. Curious about the bill clinton interview. I imagine these days he is a difficult guy to get to speak bluntly. You must be afraid of distracting from his wifes campaign. What was your strategy to get something new out of him . We should note given this is a show about the media, that part of our deal with cgi was that wed ask questions about some of the programs and issues they work on including the economy and veterans issues. I appreciate that. What you said to the ap was an expressive way of saying it. You said i wish could have Hillary Clinton, jeb bush and marco rubio do whatever i want them to do in my studio. Its just not the world we live in. I really do. When you are a president ial candidate its a little different. There is you have less leverage because you are supposed to go through the gauntlet of interviews. But especially when youre like a big business person or a big actor or a former president or somebody who is retired from public life they usually want something. They usually wait until they have something purposeful to try to regain the Publics Trust in the press . You and i both know that a lot of folks in the audience are distrustful of the media as a whole. I get it and i understand why. Every time there is one of these things whether its Brian Williams or George Stephanopoulos or bill oreilly it hurts all of us. One of your rivals chuck todd was interviewed when he meet the press. Last week john took over face the nation and you are stepping in to state of the union. All these new players. This feels like a moment of generational change. It is. They are a bunch of little aged white guys considered a Seismic Shift in what we are offering. Do you think the sunday morning format is broengen because of political insiders and some of whom come on the show and mislead viewers. I dont think its broken. I think there needs to be more bushing back and there has been and is more pushing back. When you were hosting back in 2010. You instituted Fact Checking. We did. And as i said to you, you were with the New York Times at the time the best Fact Checking would be instant i have all the facts and know what you are saying is true. The second would be pop up video with the viewers that comes up. The iraq war vote was blah blah blah. The third best is to have that Fact Checking process. I think and i have seen this more on cable and the network news shows, more pushing back and thats a healthy thing. What happens to the sunday shows is that sunday shows being people dont wait until sunday morning to make news. Thats why its time to reinvigorate and go longer than you can during the week. You had rand paul in the studio with you and your pitch to him was we will have more time. Yeah. We will have more time. That means not only by the way that i will have more time to ask annoying questions, but to get to the reason behind the principals in which they believe. We will have more time to talk about things in his biography. I know this from the pressures at 4 00 from my daily show. You are not going to have time for the college they go to or why did you go to mexico after college . Thousands of journalists have lost their jobs along the way. Im an optimist about the internet but all the reporters and all the gazettes were laid off and got me thinking about what digital still cant do laz as print.
