Indonesian air space. The source said that move may have been intentional to avoid radar detection. In the search in the indian ocean, the focus is on the area where a chinese ship said it detected two pulse signals. The signals heard friday and saturday were a little more than a mile apart, and right now a british ship with advanced equipment is heading there to check it out. An australian ship also picked up an acoustic noise but in a different area to the north. They cant verify that any of it is connected to the missing plane. All right, lets check in now with will ripley in perth, australia. Will . Reporter fred, the search area is larger, as you mentioned, after seeing it go down in size for most of this week, it increased to 6,000 square miles. Theyre searching for this debris field which on day 37 still has not been spotted. Not one single piece of debris from flight 370 has been recovered. The underwater search also continues at this hour. We have confirmed at least four possible pings. A Data Analysis still pending on two of them. And we expect to possibly learn this week if they dont hear any more pings, its now been five days since we heard a ping, the last one was on tuesday. If the we dont hear any more, at some point the search is going to shift from listening underwater to deploying the submersible and scanning the bottom of the ocean. When that happens, it will slow down the search considerably, so the question well maybe have answered this week is when that phase will begin. Fred . Thank you so much. Meantime, were also following a development in eastern ukraine. Prorussian protesters have taken over several government buildings and police stations and ukraines interior minister confirms that a state Security Officer was killed. Leaders say an antiterrorism operation is under way, but our crews are not seeing any signs of confrontations. The white house is responding by sending Vice President biden to ukraine on april 22nd to talk with government leaders and other groups. Im fredricka whitfield. See you later this afternoon. Reliable sources starts right now. Good morning and welcome to reliable sources. Im Brian Stalter and i have some Great Stories for you in the next couple minutes. One man standing alone on capitol hill with a giant merger. Hes here to tell you why he thinks the comcasttime warner merger would be a disaster. It seems like theres always something going on over there. This one raises journalistic questions well get into. And the search for the malaysian jet liner from chinas perspective. They have their own thoughts on the recovery and some conspiracy theories, too. David colbert taking over for David Letterman on the late show. Hes a likeable guy, so we all want to see him make this work, right . Wrong. Welcome to 21st century america, or seemingly, anything divided along political lines. My weekly look at stories that get twisted by the partisan media. In this case a lot of conservative media big shots think cbs is showing bias by bringing colbert over from comedy central. See what Rush Limbaugh had to say on thursday. Ill give you the short version. Cbs has just declared war on the heartland of america. No longer is comedy going to be a covert assault on traditional american values, conservatives, now its just wideo out in the open. Theyve hired a convert to be on a comedy show. We might be hearing more of that in the months to come. Bill oreilly brought up colbert and criticized him before the late show announcement. Heres what he said earlier in the week. Like many fanatics, colbert is on the extreme. Hes a true expressive believer playing exclusively to other believers. The guy does do damage because he gives cover to powerful people who are selling americans a big lie, that this country is bad, that it intentionally opresses many of its own citizens. That is a lie. That point of view is shameful. I guess we shouldnt be surprised to hear oreilly criticizing colbert. Many think that character that colbert plays on his show is based on bill. And, of course, since this is red news blue news, you can guess how the people at nbc were greeting the colbert news. Mazeltov. Dave letterman is a genius, and now as hes leaving its going to be jimmy fallon on the tonight show and Steven Colbert on cbs. Were lucky to be living in this genius age of people who are this good at their jobs on the media every night. I consider this a business decision by cbs, not an idealogical one, but its also politics so i want to get into that in just a minute. Since its business, where do i look . To the demographic. Thats tv shorthand for the younger viewers who when they watch bring in more advertising dollars like this one. Let me explain two numbers to you that explain whats going on. The immediate ymedian age for t age is 42. The median age for David Letterman is 58. Im going to bring in a tv legend who knows more about late night than anyone in the demo, the bright and funny dick cavet. And in new york, kelly goth, progressive columnist for the daily beast. Thank you both for joining me. Thank you. Michelle, let me start with you. Colberts character is a joke. He has been doing this for a decade. Its a comedy show. So a lot of people might ask, cant the right take a joke . Of course, we can, but conservatives look at this and they say, typical liberal hollywood. They go and swap out their aging, liberal comedian for a younger, more liberal comedian who wears his politics on his sleeve. Unlike carson, colberts main goal isnt just to entertain, its also to push a political a general dachlt. Agenda. But hes not going to do that on his late show. But its difficult to separate colbert the politician and colbert the person. Wendy, do you get that about colbert . I get why people on the right are pretending their upset. I think for someone like Rush Limbaugh or bill oreilly, outrage is what motivates their audience and gets them viewers. So i get why theyre at least pretending to make hay out of this. Nbcs chris hayes played that same Rush Limbaugh sound bite i just did and then he had this to say. This is the point where im supposed to say Rush Limbaugh is being ridiculous, but i dont think he and others are being ridiculo ridiculous, at least as conservatives. Conservatives have a right to be upset that Steve Colbert is taking over this huge platform, because part of the reason why i love this guy is he has real, sophisticated, thoughtful, liberal politics. I think this goes to michelles argument. I think its an interesting argument, but one of the conservative writers i was reading about this, he pointed out weve mainly seen colbert in the public eye in character. So we actually dont know what kind of straight man interviewer hes going to be. I think conservatives are justified being upset because it seems like the executives in hollywood are trying to push a political agenda. Why would jayl leno be pushed out . It doesnt make sense. He had great ratings. Its because he didnt appeal to middle america. There are plenty of actresses i can think of who have been pushed out or not making the money they should. Right, they were thinking about the younger demographic. Let me play one more clip about colbert in character before we talk about him out of character. This is the famous white house keynote speech he gave, just feet away from president bush. Watch. This man stands for four things. Not only for things but on things. He stands on rubble and recently flooded city squares. There was so much tension in the room that night. I remember people squirming in their seats because they werent used to that kind of humor. There was a headline on politico this week. It said, washington, beware. Steve colbert is coming for you. Dont you think politicians of all stripes have to be a little nervous about colbert . Thats the point im getting at here, brian, is good contenders are equal opportunity offenders. Jon stewart was friends with colbert, right, they were roommates, yet that didnt stop him from making jokes that were funny. Come on, you watch the show. He goes after republicans. So does fallon, so does kimmel. When they do something funny. So youre saying comedians never made fun of bill clinton. Theyre still making jokes about him 20 years later about his sex life, 20 years after. I just think there is a little bit of paranoia here among conservetors that they only make jokes about conservetors. Now we have a bunch of comedians that thats what theyre trying to do. For you to act like this is some sort of conspiracy is very unfair. Were not the funny police, but i think we should come back in a year and talk about how hes doing once he takes over the late show and well see how hes able to shed that skin and reveal who he really is. Michelle, kell, thanks for joining me. Thanks, brian. That was fun. Now lets turn to the voice of wisdom. Dick cavett has been on tv for five decades. Hes best known for his career on late night television. He did things like make jokes for the tonight show. He joins me now from new york. Thanks for coming on. I am glad to join you. Do you think cbs is taking a big gamble here with Steve Colbert . If they are, its probably the best gamble anyone took. I cant think of anyone or whether there has been anyone more qualified to do this show. Tell me why hes so qualified. Weve seen him for a decade over at comedy central. What makes him so qualified . You dont see it all there, thats the interesting part of this. You know, when steven decided to do that, people said, this is the did you meanest career mover, to try to be a character continuously. The interesting thing about it is i know him, and theres so much more to him and even he is aware of that. When we were talking about it he and i were talking about i said, many times in my character i am frustrated because id like to say what i feel and talk about things im interested in. But hes kind of like marcel marceau, stuck in the mask of that character. But its so thoroughly entertaining that i dont think anybody ever complained about that. He has everything he needs. He has intelligence, fabulous education, hes Read Everything you can name, and he is not just a comedian but a wit in the tradition of groucho and the very best people. If he were only better looking. I think we can all say that about ourselves. Yes. Or at least about others. What do you think colbert should be most concerned about . Granted, hes got 6 or 9 or 12 months to prepare before he takes the late show chair, but what should he be most concerned about . You saw a lot of conservatives critiquing him this week. You saw where they made fun of that. That came from the waistline of the country. Can i do that joke again . What Rush Limbaugh said is about as far away from anything i would be interested in unless it was from dick cheney. Peoples political backgrounds may matter. You get a good bit from those guys if theyre going to, as you say, impose their political views, but theyre not dumb enough to do that. Its all right to have them, its all right to be seen, but that should not ever be a worry. So whats the single skill any talk show host has to have . Well, they always told me i was a good listener. If they only knew how many times, at least when i began, i would be looking at the guest list and Somebody Just signalled me over there, or they took away a sign, and i would think, oh, gosh, this guys lips stopped moving. Which of these do you prefer. People, all of whom i know, or as they say on panel shows are dear friends of mine. I like a more than. You do have a favorite. You just wont share. Yes. I think we all do. Thats the beauty of television. Z. I should never be out from in front of my tuition seelevision. Ill never get war and peace read. Thank you for being with us. You make it painless. Thats great. You dont have to flatter me anymore, i already did your interview. Okay, i take it back. Im going to regain my composure after the dick cavett interview over the break. I think youll be shocked at how much money is being spent over this proposed comcast time warner merger. You may ask, if they have this much money, where is the cable guy when you need him . Stay tuned. Ups is a global company, but most of our employees live in the same communities that we serve. People here know that our operations have an impact locally. Were using more natural gas vehicles than ever before. The trucks are reliable, thats good for business. But they also reduce emissions, and thats good for everyone. It makes me feel very good about the future of our company. With just a few dabs, its clinically proven to seal out more food particles so youre more comfortable and confident while you eat. Super poligrip free made the kiwi an enjoyable experience. [ charlie ] try zinc free super poligrip. I hate my Cable Company. You hear people say that all the time, right . Even Cable Companies admit Customer Service is a big problem. So heres a question. Will the 45 billion plan for a mega merger between comcast and Time Warner Cable make that service any better . A lot of consumer groups say no. And they showed up on wednesday on capitol hill to watch Company Executives face off against the Senate Judiciary committee. There were a lot of tough questions to ask about this proposed merger, so you might have expected a lot of fireworks at the hearing. It turns out not so much. It was actually quite a snooze. Why is that . Is that because of the vast sums of money comcast spreads all over washington . Its a question i think you have to ask because comcast is known as one of the biggest spenders in all of politics. Its got an army of politics here in d. C. Did you know that a former fcc commissioner is now a comcast senior Vice President . Or that comcast ceo, Brian Roberts, played golf with president obama last year . There are lots of examples like that that critics dig up. So we decided to look at, in this case, which senators on this committee got what from comcast. And we found out that every one of the 18 members of the committee has gotten cash donations from comcast at some point in the last decade, every one of them. Like orren hatch, the governor of utah. Heres what he had to say. I know some of my friends here have never met a merger they liked. Too often Government Intervention in such matters risks harming consumer warfare by protecting competitors from market forces. Senator hatch likes the deal and comcast likes him, really likes him. Over the past decade, he received more money than any other republican senator on the committee from comcast, thats 45,000. Lets be clear, of course. We have no evidence that those donations influenced his thinking on this matter. Comcast likes democrats a lot, too. Senator dick durbin got even more money than senator hatch did, more than any senator on the committee, 54,000 in the last decade. But he wasnt at the hearing on wednesday. Another democrat, Patrick Leahy from vermont received 52,500 in the last decade. He brought up questions but he did not openly propose the merger. Some of the toughest questions on wednesday came from those who received the least amount of money from comcast. Republican mike lee from utah has received only 17,500. Hes still a freshman senator, but heres what he said on wednesday. Ive heard some concerns expressed that the emerging comcast, the postmerger comcast might have the incentive or even the predilection, but certainly enhanced capacity due to its larger size to discriminate against types of content, including political content. And who is the senator who is way down the bottom of the list of comcast generosity . Thats al franken, senator of minnesota. He was the only one to openly oppose the merger. So what is it about this money and how senators treat this merger . And why does senator franken think this merger is such a bad idea . He joins me now to talk about all these issues. Senator, thank you for coming here. Thank you, brian. I was rattling off all the cash donation to see lawmakers. It seems very difficult to believe it doesnt have some effect on the response that comcast is getting now from washington. Do you worry about that . Do you worry, for example, that one of the former fcc commissioners now works for comcast, that we see that kind of cod coziness and business ins case and that it may affect winning approval. I dont like this revolving door. I thought that was kind of tacky that one of the fcc commissioners, i think just four months after they approved the comcast nbc deal, went over to work a highpaying job at comcast. I just dont like that. The money specifically, do you think it influences your colleagues on capitol hill . You know, i think comcast does give money to people who support them, not necessarily to buy their support, but yeah, i really dont like the role of money in politics, and i think its gotten worse and worse and worse. I think Citizens United was a very disturbing pernicious ruling. I think this latest mccutcheon ruling was to her rierrible. Its just giving power to people with money. When nbc proposed merger was happening, what do you think of that . I basically said i was against this, i have some experience here. As i said, i got over 100,000 people writing me saying, dont allow this to happen. Its not just consumers, by the way, its also Big Media Companies. There are ceos of Big Media Companies that own lots of cable channels that are very concerned about this merger, but we havent heard them speak out. Well, that speaks volumes about how anticompetitive this is. You know why they dont speak out . They come to my office and say, this is off the record. Then they talk about how its going to be anticompetitive, but you cant name names, then . No. Theyre afraid of retaliation. Doesnt that tell you everything you need to know . What form of retaliation . Taking channels off or paying less for the channels . Yeah, not giving them access to the 40 of the market on, you know, on broadband or 40 or 50 on broadband. Thats huge. Thats the whole point. Thats the whole point. Have you encouraged some of these comcast owners to speak up . You can encourage them, but you think they are committing business suicide by, you know, that theyll be retaliated against, and that shows you whats wrong here. It speaks to the closed system of cable and satellite distribu distributers. And you close it more by come bi combining the number one this is the number one Cable Company buying the number two. And this is the number one internet broadband Company Buying the number three. And by the way, they also have this vertical integration where they have 12 of all television thats produced. This is just this is a disaster. This is more than about cable tv. This is about cable tv its most importantly about broadband internet. Its most importantly about broadband internet. Most of the country has only one choice in broadband, and another 40 has only two choices. Thats 70 of people in america that have two or fewer choices in internet broadband. So if youre getting your tv from directv, you still got to get your internet somehow. And if you want to watch high you know, if you want to watch tv, you need highspeed internet. And thats comcast and a combination of comcast Time Warner Cable. Do you see any way this merger would help consumers . Are there positives to this . Are there Silver Linings . You know, i cant see one. I mean, i really cant. This is look, comcast has been shown to leverage their position. And ill give you a perfect example of the leverage. They were told by the regulators, you have the neighborhood. Now, whats the neighborhood . Well, were on cnn right now. So cnbc, bloomberg, fox news should all be around us . It should be, shouldnt it . Bloomberg isnt. Cnn sorry comcast agreed to neighborhood, so agreed to put cnn next to fox next to msnbc next to cnbc. 24hour cable news, and in the case of cnbc, which comcast owns the financial network. What is bloomberg . Its a Financial News network. So it should be next to cnbc so that people see bloomberg and say, oh, im curious about bloomberg. This wound up in litigation for years. They put bloomberg out in the nosebleed seats. Why . They wanted more people to watch cnbc. You spent more time on the camera than anyone. You rarely do interviews, why is that . Basically, i won, by 312 votes, i think, the people of minnesota wanted to know that i was going to focus on them and on the job, and thats what i wanted to do. Would you go on the new late show with Steven Colbert next year . What do you think of that announcement . I think steven is just brilliant, and i think every comedian and every satirist feels the same way. I think its a great choice. Its going to be interesting to see him do it as himself. I mean, this is not in character. Hes going to have to really reinvent himself. And isnt that a great thing, to reinvent yourself. Its a high stakes reinvention. That character and the way he sustained it and the way he grew, i just think hes absolutely brilliant. Senator franken, thank you for joining me. Thank you. By the way, were going to keep trying to book Brian Roberts or david cohen from comcast. Wed love to have them here to talk about the merger. Coming up, another big controversy on abc. When should a political person be able to attend a fundraiser . We will dig more into that, next. Cmon, you want heartburn . When your favorite food starts a fight, fight back fast, with tums. Heartburn relief that neutralizes acid on contact. And goes to work in seconds. Tum, tum tum tum. Tums thats why i got a new windows 2 in 1. But its fun, too with touch, and tons of great apps for stuff like music, cause a good playlist is good for business. I need the bosss signature for this. Im the boss. Honestly i wanna see you be brave hooking up the country whelping business run trains they haul everything, safely and on time. Tracks they connect the factories built along the lines. And that means jobs, lots of people, making lots and lots of things. Lets get your business rolling now, everybody sing. Norfolk southern whats your function . Helping this big country move ahead as one Norfolk Southern hows that function . Welcome back. You know, we talk a lot here about partisan channels, fox news, msnbc. Partly because theyre a new species in television. They have posts with Strong Political points and that can cause conflicts. Are they journalists or penalties or political figures or all of the above somehow . This one involves Joe Scarborough, the public cohost of the morning joe. Hes hosting a dinner next month, sometimes described as a fu fundraiser, and that brought scrutiny. A few months ago, a democrat wanted to speak in florida but he had to cancel because of the channels concerns. Remember, both keith ento and scarborough were taken off because of their opinions. You might say these people make no secret of their politics, so whats the conflict . It is a very complicated issue, and joining me to get through some of it is the head of Public Affairs at George Washington university. Frank, thanks for joining me. Glad to be here. It seems there used to be much more clear rules about these issues, and now, not so much. Msnbc in this case this week was getting questions from reporters like me for days about what the rules are. Do you think there are any rules at all anymore . There are rules, but they seem to drift all over the place and sometimes there are double standards and sometimes they dont matter at all. It used to be very clear. If you came out of government and went into journalism first of all, it was hard to do and if you did it, you gave up government. Or if you went from journalism to government, you probably said to yourself, im not going back to journalism. Now journalism can mirror all these different things, so the rules are very much lets call them situational. Situational. It depends. There are five or six examples this week of people on television in these quandaries. And Joe Scarborough is just one of them. Scarboroughs is interesting because hes one of the few that i identify as a conservative republican on nbc. Like ed schultz who was told you should not be attending that fundraiser in florida in march. What did you think about the letter that came out from the head of the network saying, this is a double standard . The dnc is trying to weigh in here and make a little bit of noise. Theyre trying to make a point and theyre trying to hold msnbcs feet to the fire. The fact of the matter is by the way, i said to them this morning, any updates . Not from us. Have you heard anything from msnbc. Theyre trying to keep this going, i guess. They want to keep it going, but they make it work when they want to bhak make it work. They love the partisans on the air. Theyre weighing in because they want to be part of the noise machine and there is lots of noise out here. The real issue is the motivations of these people on the air, are they being transparent with their viewers, and what is the position of their employer . Al sharpton was in the news this week because a smoking gun released information saying he was an fbi informant in the 1980s. He was a target this week as a result of the tabloid covers to fox news criticizing him, and yet in the same week, president obama is going to his conference and speaking. Let me read what npr said about that. He said for both men there is a symbiosis. They can be sure their message will be amplified to the africanamerican audience of his syndicated radio show for msnbc. For sharpton, its just another example of how agitated how complete his selfreinvention has been from outside agitator to inside player. What cameras do for people and shows like this do for people is they give them profile and access. Profile and access equals influence, especially in this town. But its also the dangerous part of it. Because, again, what are you using your podium, your platform, for . Is it to inform the audience . Is it to persuade the audience . Is it to feather your own nest . Is it to run for office yourself someday whether you declare that or not . Thats what the public has a right to know, and everybody should have to post on their website, these are my intentions. They should be like the pharmaceutical companies. This show may inform but it also may lead to my political future. A lot more transparency. Thats true here at cnn as well. Down the hall in this studio we have cross fire, people like Newt Gingrich and van jones who have been in the spotlight in the past and might be in the future. So cnn is not exempt to this. Cnn has hired people in Revolving Doors in the past. Thank you for being with us. You have seen wall to wall coverage of the missing malaysian airliner, but what would you be seeing if you were watching chinese tv . Well go inside to a chinese journalist working with the media. For five weeks now, the American Media have reported on the search for the still missing Malaysia Airlines jets, and so have the Chinese Media but from a different perspective. For the chinese, in some ways this story is more personal and difficult to cover. More than 150 of the passengers on board that flight were chinese and the plane was headed for beijing. This story is one of pain and desperation. So how has the Chinese Media approached this story and is the media more free than we might think to tell the story . Jim spellman is a correspondent for the chinese English Channel and he used to work for cnn, so he has the perfect perspective to report on this. Thanks for being here. Thanks for having me. I assume you still see coverage in the United States . Im as hooked as anybody, absolutely. How does it compare to the level of resources that Chinese Media have devoted to this story . Weve had about eight crews out in the field, plus anchors in beijing and anchors in washington, including our correspondent wong who has been on the chinese search ship for over a month now. Were heavily invested in covering this story. Do you have a sense of how much chinese citizens are paying attention to this story as well as american citizens . Any sense of that . Its a huge story, absolutely no doubt. Even in the sixth week of it, huh . In the sixth week of it. This plane was flying to beijing, so there is National Interest there. And theres also been National Interest in the authorities to speak to the chinese audience. The defense minister of malaysia gave an exclusive interview to our correspondent james chow, and he said, i need to do this so i can speak directly to the chinese people. I think its an audience on this story, but increasingly on many stories, that you just cant ignore. Have you noticed any hostility in the u. S. Media toward some of the chinese officials or toward some of the information released from china about this . I think there is a sense, almost a narrative that has built that if its coming from the chinese it somehow is part of a big Propaganda Campaign or some sort of secrecy or something when, in fact, i may be wrong, i believe the u. S. Has released zero Satellite Photos and i believe the u. S. Has allowed no reporters on their p8 search plane which was in the mix there. We talked recently on this program about how russia today, that cable channel supports russias point of view here in the United States and around the world. Do you feel similar pressures to present chinas point of view because its a stateowned channel . We feel that its important to include china in the mix in stories where china is relevant. So is relevant Something Like the ukraine, the chinese position is essentially nonintervention. So, that will be in some reports, but there respect going to be driving the day to day of the story. We are more likely to include, say, their them in context of the Security Council votes in the u. N. , but we certainly are not given and i have never received any type of memo to, you know, reflect some sort of party line. What has the appetite been like. As far as you can tell, for alternative explanation for this planes disappearance or conspiracy theorys . We have had plenty of that in the United States. Has there been a lot of that in china or reflected on television or cctv . Im not surible speak to what that has been like in china, chinese tv. I dont speak chinese. On our air, you will see much, much less speculation, to a degree, it is almost unavoidable n a way, the search has been speculative. So, we have experts on that will talk about the technology and things like that, possible routes, but we really have avoided speculation. People hear about Something Like cctv and they hear about the state funding of it and they might be skeptical as a result. Do you sense any pressure on journalists who tell the story of the missing plane a certain way because its funded by the Chinese Government . Certainly havent. I mean is there a chinese way to describe how black boxes work . I think that largely, its not its not a story that has a chinese perspective. I think, in a watch but in the details, i think that there we bring to our viewers cctv. Stands for China Central television. This is not something we hide from, viewers should know that thats who is funding it. We dont hide from that at all. We are proud of that. Its part of who we are. So they should know on other more political stories, probably hear more of a chinese point of view. James spellman, thank you for joining me. Thanks for having me. Now you know what time it is time for a quick break here. Speaking of piers, he is an exception to a rule, a british rule, because this week, we saw another brit take the helm of an American News operation. James gold stone, who joined abc from britains it. Have a decade ago was promoted to be the president of abc news. He is replacing ben sherwood, taking over the whole disney Abc Television group. As you may know, newspapers over in britain have a reputation for provocativeness and for not hiding their points of view. And with a lot of American Media seeming to head that way, too, its no wonder why they keep hiring brits. And that gives me into a segue what i think will be a big media story this coming week and that is the prize worthiness of news reporting coming from the nsa documents leaked by edward snowden. Glen greene wald and two other journalists from the guardian, the News Organization founded in britain were in new orleans on friday to accept the george polling award for their work processing and explaining the documents that snows depp provided. The go Washington Post also shared in the polk award. On monday afternoon, journalists most prestigious prizes happened out, those are the pulitzers. We dont know the winners yet we know this if snowden could have van not recognized, snubbed by the Pulitzer Committee that is going to be a very controversial decision. Then again if it is deemed prize worthy, i think it is i bet that will stir up controversy as well. We will be covering all of that and the rest of the weeks media news on cnn. Com.
