Elizabeth . Reporter thats right, john. Whats exciting about this new data is its a much larger data set, so its much more reliable than what they announced a few weeks ago. So lets take a look at what these percentages are. What theyre showing is that their vaccine is 94. 1 effective. Thats very much along the lines of what they said earlier. Also, very close to the pfizers effectiveness. And this vaccine, they say, is 100 effective against severe disease. Now, lets take a look at the numbers that they gave that led to this percentage. So moderna says that 11 out of the 15,000 people in their study who received the vaccine got covid19. So 11 out of 15,000 who received the vaccine got covid19. But 185 people out of the 15,000 who received the placebo got covid19. So you can see, thats a huge difference. You can really see how the vaccine made a difference. And in this study, it went on for several months, and moderna didnt give covid19, people just went out into their communities, and the rates of covid have been so high in the past several months, that people just naturally ran into and got infected with covid19. Now, the next steps is the fda and the cdc so to review both the pfizer and the Moderna Vaccine. Dr. Anthony fauci telling us that he thinks the First Americans will get vaccinated in the second half of december. John, alisyn . And zplelizabeth, were also getting some news about distribution. Who will get these vaccines first and in what order when they become available. What have we learned . Right. So thats up to an Advisory Committee to the center for disease control. And this group of independent experts seems to be steering towards two groups to get it first. One is Front Line Health Care workers. And the other is nursing home residents. And then after that, other highrisk groups such as essential workers Like Police Officers or people with underlying medical conditions. But right now, it looks like the first in line will be Health Care Workers and nursing home residents. John, alisyn . Elizabeth, thank you very much for all of that information. Okay, joining us now is someone who is contributing to the Moderna Vaccine trial, dr. Carlos del rio. Hes the executive associate dean of Emory University school of medicine at grady health system. Also with us, cnn medical analyst, dr. Jonathan reiner, a professor of medicine at George Washington university. Great to have both of you. So dr. Del rio, this breaking news that weve just gotten, that they are applying today for the emergency use authorization, so what does that mean in terms of the timeline . When could it be available . Well, alisyn, i think this is fantastic news. And as elizabeth said, you know, the efficacy to prevent disease of 94. 1 , but in addition, of all of the serious cases of covid that there were in the study, 30 cases of serious covid, all of them were in the placebo, none of them were in the vaccine arm. Not only does it prevent infection, it really prevents severe disease. We dont know if it prevents we dont know if it prevents infection or not, it just prevents disease at this point in time. So once we got the vaccine rolled out, probably by the second week of december, well probably see vaccinations either with moderna or the pfizer or both, we still need to continue to use a mask and protect ourselves, because we can still potentially get infected and transmit to others. We dont have that data. That data will be coming up later whether it prevents infection or not. But the fact that it prevents disease, especially severe disease is good news, considering the number of people hospitalized with covid right now zplp and dr. Reiner, thats a really striking figure that jumps off the screen. 100 effective against severe illness. Now, it will be some time, we understand, it will be some time and first to get the vaccine will be Health Care Workers and maybe vulnerable populations in nursing homes. But six months, a year from now, if you have a vaccine, maybe more than one, 100 effective against severe illness, how can that change behavior . What will it allow us to do . It will allow us to go back to basically a normal life. And thats really what you want this vaccine to do. We want to prevent people from dying. You know, fortunately, you know, well over, you know, 98 of people who acquire this virus do survive. The problem is the small number of people, the relatively small proportion of people who die from this or the proportion of people who get very sick and suffer hospitalizations. And, you know, the Moderna Vaccine and the Pfizer Vaccine seem to be remarkably effective at preventing this from happening. And now particularly, this morning, with the moderna data, suggesting 100 effective against severe disease, like hospitalization is very welcome news. And this is the promise that will return our society and society around the world to normal life. Oh, my gosh. What a fantastic development. But, of course, the devils in the details, dr. Del rio. And so weve been hearing for weeks now that the first people who will get this vaccine, youre saying, middecember, will be Front Line Health Care workers. But let me just show you the numbers. Because there are many people who need it than will be able to get it. So in terms of the numbers, 40 million vaccine doses, okay, are estimated to be available by the end of december. But there are 21 Million Health care personnel, 87 Million People considered essential workers, like front line workers in terms of, you know, police, et cetera, 100 million adults with highrisk medical conditions, and 53 million americans 65 and older, obviously, some of them in nursing homes. So theres just not enough to go around. And i know theres this Advisory Committee, the cdc Advisory Committee thats meeting tomorrow to try to figure out who exactly will get those 40 doses. So whats the answer . Well, the answer is that this is one of the most complicated Public Health experts weve ever done. Vaccinating over 250 million americans in a matter of six months or so is not going to be easy, especially with a vaccine that requires two doses, so one dose today and one dose in a month. But its doable. We put a man on the moon, we can do this. I think its going to require a lot of coordination, a lot of collaboration of, you know, federal dissipate governors and medical personnel. And of course, the community. Because, remember, vaccines dont work, vaccination works. Youve got to get vaccines into people. Its going to be a tiered approach. The National Academy of science, engineering, and medicine put out a report that is very comprehensive on this topic. The cdc Advisory Committee has essentially accepted the report. And this tiered approach would mean that youre going to start vaccinating people that are highest risk and move until you get to the general population. Im pretty confident that by some time between april and june, we will be getting to the general population and well be immunizing everybody. And as was previously said, i think by the fall, i hope that we will be back to essentially normal. Thats great news. Thats great news. And it increases the urgency to get there. It increases the urgency on all of us to behave in the right way until then. And dr. Reiner, dr. Deborah birx was out over the weekend saying things that i think alarmed a lot of people. She was very blunt with what you should do if you traveled for thanksgiving, which frankly the cdc had warned against. And this is what deborah birx said. So, listen. If youre young and you gathered, you need to be tested about five to ten days later, but you need to assume youre infected and not go near your grandparents and aunts and others without a mask. And if youre over 65 or if you have comorbidities and gathered at thanksgiving, if you develop any symptoms, you need to be tested immediately. If you traveled for thanksgiving, dr. Reiner, assume youre infected. And both dr. Birx and dr. Fauci are warning of this surge upon a surge, because of family gatherings. What do you see . Oh, it is going to happen. I think just as we were trying to educate the public prior to thanksgiving, to assume that they might have been exposed or infected before they went home, now since the virus is so ubiquitous around this country, if youve traveled on thanksgiving, on the thanksgiving holiday, you should assume youve been infected or exposed to the virus. Even if you have no symptoms, especially if you have no symptom symptoms. You should consider quarantining for a week and then getting tested. Thats the sensible thing to do. Stay home for a week and then get tested. Dr. Del rio, i believe you traveled for the thanksgiving holiday and the reason that i think that is because we have this lovely picture of you in a contraption of safety, where you have a mask and eye protection and a plastic over it and a hat. So what was your take on the safety at the airports and whats your plan now that youre back home . Well, you know, indeed, i traveled, i went to new york to visit my daughter, who had just had a baby last week, and thats our first granddaughter. Congratulations so we had to go see her. And we took many precautions. We got tested three days before we got on the plane, we got tested four days after we arrived. We essentially stayed within our bubble. And then we traveled using an k95 mask and using, as you saw, a face shield or goggles and with purell, with hand sanitizer. And i will tell you, there wasnt a lot of people at the airport in laguardia, more people in the airport at atlanta. But overall, i saw everybody masked. And in the planes, you know, i flew delta. Theyre doing a very good job of really enforcing the masking, of blocking the middle seat, of increasing the air ventilation, of cleaning the planes. I felt pretty safe on the plane. Im more concerned when i go to the Grocery Store and other places. I think traveling was okay, but you have to follow the registrations and be careful. Keep your social distance and do all of those different things. And it is a matter of keeping that at the front of your head all the time, the masking, the face shield, keeping your distance, all of those things to try to minimize your risk of getting infected. But im back in atlanta, and as dr. Birx said, in five to seven days, im going to get tested. Are you going to quarantine until then . Im going to stay, pretty much, yes, im pretty much going to stay home. So youre following the advice from dr. Birx and others. You traveled, youre going to stay home, get tested in five to seven days. Thats what you need to do at this point. Thats what you need to do as this goes forward. Dr. Reiner, what do you think of dr. Del rio hitting the road for thanksgiving . Oh, if i had a new grandchild, i would be hitting the road, also, and geared up like dr. Del rio. Look, you know, we have lives that we have to live and all of these decisions are very personal. I think dr. Del rio and his wife took sensible precautions on the front end and now on the back end theyll do the same, theyll do whats important now that theyre back in atlanta. So, congratulations. Mazel tov. Congratulations, indeed. Dr. Del rio, dr. Reiner, thank you so much for being with us this morning. Appreciate it. Take care. All right, president elect biden set to announce his Economic Team today. You feel like a big deal. Priceline. Every trip is a big deal. President elect joe biden and Vice President elect Kamala Harris will receive their First National security briefing today. Biden will also formally announce his Economic Team today after naming an allfemale Senior Communications team last night. Joining us now to talk about this, we have cnn political analyst, sungman kim, a White House Reporter for the Washington Post. Also with us, brittany shepard, National Politics recorder for yahoo news. Great to see both of you. Let me just put up the list of the women who will be leading the Communications Team in the biden white house. And, you know, brittney, donai t want yes, its an historic headline and a very important historic headline, but i think that sometimes eclipses their qualifications for the job. These women already familiar to lots of our viewers. Theyve been around washington. Theyve been in and out of the white house. They know what theyre doing. But as you point out, its very notable, because washington is the ultimately old boys club. Exactly, alisyn. I mean, d. C. Is the city of boys clubs. I think the white house is probably the most notorious of them all. Both in the press representation and in the staffing. Its critical for the Biden Transition Team that they are putting adults in the room. Thats why youre seeing a lot of obamaworld veterans, both formally and informally in jen psaki and others, symone sanders, as well, from the Bernie Campaign and the Biden Campaign. Its critical to them that the voice coming out of the white house representing joe biden is not only fierce in loyal defense of him, but also fresh. The campaign and now the transition has made pains to ensure that their Transition Team is diverse in thought, in experience, in age, and thats continuing over here to the Communications Team. And i think its notable that over the last four years, we have had a maybe acrimonious relationship to put it polite we what whats coming out of the White House Press shop, but we did hear a lot from President Trump himself. He would be out on the lawn speaking for sometimes an hour and a half if its snowing, if its 100 degrees with a group of adults like the Biden Campaign has liked to create. I dont think were going to hear from biden as much. I think well be hearing a lot from these women and we should really be getting familiar with their names. Its a big job and they have a lot of work to do. Not just to restore confidence in an administration or in a government, but in institutions themselves. Because americans have lost faith in institutions. And thats a tall order to try to restore that in just a few years. Sungminh, were also getting reporting on the Economic Team that biden will nominate. We learned cecelia rouse, a labor economist at princeton. And neera tanden to run the office of management and budget, which is a Senate Confirmed role. Why does that matter . Because theres already griping overnight about that nomination. A spokesperson for senator john cornyn has put out a statement basically saying something to the effect of, theres a 0 chance that she will be confirmed. And then, also, a former spokesperson for Bernie Sanders saying, everything toxic about the Corporate Democratic Party is embodied in neera tanden. Interesting that this is the pick all of a sudden after a few weeks thats generated the controversy. Whats going on here . Well, neera tanden has been a prominent figure in Democratic Politics for a very long time. Obviously, she is in her role as the leader of a very prominent liberal think tank, the center for american progress. She was an ardent Hillary Clinton ally in 2016, which put her up against a lot of Bernie Sanders supporters, like the one you just quote there had and there are a lot of comments that both the left and right may dig through of neera tanden that may surface at her confirmation hearing. I know republican operatives were going through her feeds and screen shotti inting some of hee colorful tweets. And also just the democrats could be interesting. We just talked about her clash with sombere bernie supporters. Bernie is the top democrat on the Senate Budget committee, so he will be helping to lead the confirmation hearings, perhaps in a role to lead her defense against republicans. But i think this is why those georgia runoffs january 5th have so many high stakes for the execution of joe bidens agenda, whether it is personnel or policy. And were seeing it play out right now. I think it is a pretty fair, it is a fair analysis to say that if there is a republicancontrolled senate, neera tanden is probably not going to get confirmed. But certainly, if its one controlled by democrats, or one where Kamala Harris has the tiebreaking vote, she could be muscled through. Do you have anything you want to add to that, brittney . I think its important to note, too, i think a lot of progressives feel a bit blindpseudoed by whats been happening with some of these transition picks, and neera tanden is kind of a really bold example of that. They feel like even as the Biden Campaign and the biden transition is trying to tack left, theyre still tacking left in the wrong direction for them. Thats why you hear folks like bernie people have frustration. And i think youll hear that get louder as republicans get more and more critical as neera tanden, too, which i really feel like is very fascinating. So also, congress is back this week. And i dont know how many times we have to report on the dire straits that americans are in. I mean, every day, we have a report on the food banks, on people being evicted, people becoming homeless, et cetera. And so, i dont know if anything has shaken loose over the Holiday Weekend and if theres any hope that theyll be able to act. But now its even more pressing, by the way, because our breaking news, 23 minutes ago, was that today, moderna will apply for this emergency authorization use for their vaccine, which is great news, if it can be distributed. And senator Chuck Schumer for one is saying, in order to distribute this, you need money. And hes asking for Something Like 30 billion, so that states, when they get it, which will be soon, even in december, need to be able to get it into peoples arms. I mean, there is not a lot thats being shaken loose right now in terms of a big massive covid relief deal that would include perhaps upwards of 30 billion for vaccine distribution, for state and local aid, for all of these Small Businesses that are continuing to suffer. And theres just been a standstill in congress for, i mean, to be fair, for months now, especially in the last couple of weeks, as democrats, including the president elect, joe biden, have coalesced behind what the House Democrats are proposing and somewhere in the neighborhood of 2 trillion. And Senate Republicans have aimed for a much smaller, more targeted package. But i thought what was really interesting yesterday, and maybe a trend that were going to be seeing in the coming weeks, as we continue to get these dire reports and continue to hear these continue to hear these stories of people struggling is how Many Democrats start to push their own leadership for a smaller deal . I mean, a former obama economic adviser talked to our colleague, manu raju yesterday, and he recommended th eed take that pe half loaf. That is a position that Speaker Nancy Pelosi has not taken so far, but well if that changes with some pressure from our own democratic ranks in the coming weeks. Seung minute, brittney, thank you so much. We didnt even talk about the scandal of champ causing hairline fractures in president elect bidens foot. Was it champ or major . Major, im sorry why are you blaming champ . they were in it together. It was a conspiracy. All three of them. You are right. Gosh, im so sorry, champ. My lawyers will be in touch with your lawyers. It was major it was major. I really have no idea the difference, but glad you clarified that. Anytime. Ladies, thank you very much. Great to talk to you. So President Trump is taking aim at georgias republican governor, bruin kemp, over kemps support of the fair and free election in his state and his support of georgias secretary of state. This character in georgia whos a disaster, and the governor has done nothing, hes absolutely nothing. Im ashamed that i endorsed him. But i look at whats going on, its so terrible. The president heads to georgia on saturday to campaign for the republican incumbents in two runoff races that will determine which Party Controls the senate. Cnns kyung lah is live in atlanta with more. Whats the latest, kyung . Well, good morning, alisyn. Something that was a little telling to me in that fox interview is that the president didnt mention the names of the two georgia incumbent republican senators, senator Kelly Loeffler and david perdue. Instead, taking the time to rail against the governor here in the state of georgia. This is quite inconvenient for the senators, because theyre relying on the president to boost turnout for the january 5th runoff. To try to get republicans to the polls. Yet at the same time, theyre finding themselves having to support his myth that the election system is unfair. I want you to listen to senator loeffler, also on fox, doing this delicate dance this weekend. Look, david perdue and i have had the president s back, now the president has ours. Hes sending a message to encourage georgias voters to turn out. We have to make sure our voices are heard. If we dont vote, we will not win. But if everyone turns out to vote, we will win this election. Im confident were going to show america and the world that georgia is a red state. So, a bit of a troubling break in logic that were starting to hear from Republican Voters here in this state. Now, President Trump is scheduled to arrive on saturday to try to juice that turnout here in the state of georgia, with a rally. And then on sunday is the scheduled debate between the republican incumbent senators and their two democratic challengers. Something we should point out, though, is that senator david perdue says that hes not going to show up. So how is he going to be represented . With an empty podium. John, al as you know . Hmm, okay. All of that will be very interesting to see. Thank you very much, kyung. A quick programming note, you can watch the Georgia Senate debate between rafael warnick and Kelly Loeffler sunday night at 7 00 p. M. Eastern right here on cnn. All right. As the virus surges, but new york citys mayor is reversing course and planning to reopen inperson classes at Elementary Schools next week. Cnn has reporters across the country bringing you all of the latest developments. Im miguel mar tquez in new york, where the city is trying to get at least some kids back into the classroom, Elementary School aged kids from 3 on up, can start back in class on december 7th. And those with the most severe disabilities, the socalled district 75 students in new york city, they can start back on december 7th. All of this is only students who had previously indicated that they would do inperson learning. For those others students, they will have to remain doing their learning from home. But new york city taking another step towards trying to get back to normal in a pandemic. Im Paul Vercammen in Los Angeles County, california. Where those latest covid19 numbers, 5,05,000 new cases, m than 2,000 people hospitalized. And a brandnew set of guidelines to go into effect in Los Angeles County monday. These refined guidelines basically say, people can only congregate with people from their own household. It also says that churches can stay open, as well as protests for larger groups of people. But that is about it. And right behind me, you can see some people are dining. Well, this is pasadena, which has its own health department. They are allowing people to dine outside here, but only under strict guidelines from the restaurants in pasadena. That means that the workers have to wear masks and shields. All eyes on this city, as we go forward to see if this experiment is going to work, or theyre going to have to shut down restaurants here for outdoor dining, like the rest of l. A. County. Im Polo Sandoval in new york. Rhode island hitting the pause button for two weeks, hoping to reduce community covid19 spread. Starting today and running through december 13th, some offices, bars, recreational venues and also indoor gyms will be closed by order of the governor. Also, no inperson classes. Social gatherings are to be limited to only the people who live in the same house. Also, Indoor Dining capacity will be reduced. The States Health department tweeted last week that hospitalizations are rising at an unsustainable level and it could result in patients with other illnesses having to be turned away. Our thanks to our oerts rore across the country. This morning, the u. S. Set a new record. More than 93,000 americans hospitalized with coronavirus. For the front line workers who deal with the reality of this pandemic, millions of people have now seen this photo, kpr capturing a doctor comforting an elderly patient on thanksgiving day. Dr. Varon is that doctor. Thank you for your compassion. The photographer who took that picture was gora of getty images. You were the doctor. Tell us whats going on there. I have been very transparent with the media, so i usually have media in our unit so people can see whats going on. So i have a photographer following me, and as im going inside my covid unit, i see that this elderly patient is out of his bed and trying to get out of the room. And hes crying. So i get close to him. And i tell him, why are you crying . And the man says, i want to be with my wife. So you know, i just grab him, i hold him. I did not know that i was being photographed at the time. And you know, he was just crying, and eventually, he got he felt better and he stopped crying. I want to be with my wife, he said. Of course. Can he be with his wife right now . Who can he see . At the present, he cant. You know, we need to complete his treatment. He needs to be negative on his swabs so that we can then send him out of the hospital. But its very difficult. You can imagine, you are inside a room where people are coming in space suits and you have no communication with anybody else, or by phone if youre lucky. Its very difficult. And when you are an elderly individual, its even more difficult. Because you feel that you are alone. You feel isolated. You just mentioned space suit. That is what is so notable in that photograph. Hes the patient, obviously, and you are dressed in all of this protective gear. So what was going through your head during this hug . I was feeling very sorry for him. I mean, i was feeling sad, just like him, and i was just recollecting all the patients that ive had to do similar things with, you know. I will go into their rooms and sit on their bed and chat with them, because they truly need somebody to give them a hand. And my staff is very good at doing this, but we have so many patients that sometimes we cannot hold every patient or grab the hand of a patient or at least try to be a little more human. What can you tell us about how that patient is doing this morning. Hes actually doing great. Hes doing much better. We are hoping that before the end of the week, hell be able to get out of the hospital. Thats wonderful news. How often does this happen . Very often. People are just the patients get so sad. Some of them cry, some of them try to escape. We actually had somebody that tried to escape through a window the other day. They are so isolated, they really want out. It is it is very sad. How do you handle all of this, patient after patient, in need, all of these people needing not just treatment, but needing love . To be honest with you, i dont know. As you know, you know, ive been working for 256 days today, nonstop. And i dont know what keeps me going. I dont know how i havent broken down. As we have discussed before, you know, my nurses have broken down. My nurses cry in the middle of the day. Because, you know, they get so, so sad, sometimes from situations like this, you know, just seeing a patient thats crying because he wants to see his family. What does get to you, dr. Varon . As of now, what gets to me is frustration. The frustration that, you know, i do this day in and day out and people are out there, doing the wrong thing. People are out there in bars, restaurants, malls. I mean, it is crazy. Its like, we work, work, work, work, people dont listen and then they end up in my icu. We saw pictures in new york city and los angeles over the weekend of dozens, if not hundreds of people gathering in parties. When you are hugging a patient like that, what do you want or need the people out there to know . What people need to know is that i dont want to have to be hugging them. They need to do the basic things. You know, keep your social distance, wear your mask, wash your hands, and avoid going to places with a lot of people. Very simple. If people can do that, Health Care Workers like me will be able to hopefully rest. Looking at that picture again, im just struck by that man and all he wanted was to see his wife. That is correct. Generally speaking, how much do patients understand about what the protocols are . Its very difficult. Especially when you are dealing with the elderly patients. They dont understand. They dont understand this situation where you basically are in a i want to call it, jail. Where you have limited things. I mean, sometimes they dont understand that thats the process. They dont understand that you cannot go out. And thats why some of them try to get out of the hospital. How many days is it again, dr. Varon for you, working without a break . 256. 256 days. Dr. Varon, you are made of stronger stuff than all of us. I dont know. I dont know about that. But, you know, well keep on going as much as we can. Thank you. Thank you for what youre doing. Thank you for being with us this morning. Thank you for share showing compassion to the people in your hospital like that. Thats a picture and image that will live with us for a long time, so thank you for what you do. Thank you. Alisyn . My gosh. That picture is so moving. President trump has 51 days left in office and it appears he plans to use his remaining time to continue peddling false claims about the election he lost. John avlon is here with a reality check. Hi, john. Outgoing President Trumps refusal to recognize the Election Results has moved from denial to delusion in recent days. Claiming that he won by a landslide and that he won the election by a lot. Since election day, twitter has flagged trumps account more than 200 times. On sunday, he even suggested without evidence that the fbi and doj may be in on a plot against him. If youre confused about whats true in this blizzard of lies, just listen to how a trumpappointed federal judge rejected a trump appeal on friday. Quote, calling an election unfair does not make it so. Charges require specific allegations and then proof. We have neither here. Or, you could look at the results of the wisconsin recount, requested by the trump campaign. It cost them 3 million to increase joe bidens lead by 87 votes. Or look at the trump megadonor, who wants his 2. 5 million after the Trump Legal Team dropped cases for lack of evidence. Look, there are two options here. One is that the president is lying. And this would be in keeping with the more than 23,000 false or misleading claims hes made in office. It would also mean that he is playing his supporters for fools. Second is that trump really believes he won, despite all the evidence. And if the president s massive yet fragile ego obscures his ability to recognize reality, then he is delusional and houb tre should be treated the same way as someone who insists the earth is flat. If this seems unfair to members of the flat earth society, consider that an adviser told the Washington Post that trump is acting like mad king george, muttering, i won, i won. To date, there are just 23 republican members of congress who have publicly acknowledged joe bidens win. This is progress. But its still fewer than the number of gop lawmakers who have tested positive for covid. The people who really deserve our democracys thanks are those republican state official who put country over party. People like aaron langfeld, who resisted partisan pressure and certified the election there. Or clint hickman, the Arizona Republican charm of the Maricopa County board of supervisors, who called on republicans to dial back the rhetoric, rumors, and false claims after people threatened to kill the democratic secretary of states family and pets. Or georgia secretary of state brad rachbsbe bergrachbs rafnes being labeled an enemy of people for doing his job. He said, quote, if republicans dont start condemning this stuff, i think theyre really complicit. Its time to stand up and be counted. Are you going to stand for righteousness, are you going to stand for integrity, or are you going to stand for the wild mob . You wanted to comb the wild mob when it was on the left side. What are you going to do when its on our side . That is the question and its pathetic that most republican elected officials are still too afraid of a line or delusional lame duck to answer it. And thats your reality check. And secretary of state rac s raffensperger is a trump supporter and thats the thanks he the pandemic is taking a major bite out of the Holiday Shopping season. This week, congress is back in washington for what is a critical week for the u. S. Economy, their action or inaction could determine really which way things go. Christine romans joins us with much more on that. Its up to congress, which way this goes. It really is. We knew the recovery was fragile and you saw the record hospitalizations and that is feeding into a jobs crisis here. Well learn what the jobs picture was, were expecting 400,000 or 500,000 jobs were added and in normal times that would be good but thats a slower pace and not picking up the people who got thrown out of the economy when there was the big shutdown the beginning of the summer. What were hearing from governors and from mayors and local officials, they need a federal stimulus package. They need more money now. It is not even just stimulus. Its survival. John, listen to the governor of new jersey. Ill tell what you would really make a difference here, a big federal stimulus sooner than later, with a lifeline to Small Businesses, restaurants, folks who are unemployed. That would be a game changer, not just in their lives and in their prospects, but it gives us more degrees of freedom in terms of dealing with the virus. So its on the table in terms of a shutdown. I dont anticipate it and i sure as heck dont want to go that route but boy, federal stimulus would give us a lot more ammunition to do a lot more things right now. By some accounts a third of Small Businesses in new jersey have closed this year. If you dont have a lifeline, if you dont have support, if you dont have subsidies for the Small Businesses while you have this virus rampaging through the states and localities, this is just a real no win situation. Is there going to be people watching right now, what about my 401 k . My stock package is up for the year. This is in the world is upside down file. Youve got the dow on track for the best november since 1987, up 12. 8 for the month. Just think of that. This is the kshaped recovery. Investors win. People on the right side of the economy win and really it just blows everybody else away here in terms of if you dont have investments in the stock market, if you have the kind of job that you have to go to every day or you have a job that youre dealing with, with workers with customers, right, and you cant go to work, this is just a really tough point we are in right now and i dont know theres an urgency in the lame duck session. This is going to determine whether you have a recovery that lasts or you have a double dip recession next year. What would a double dip recession look like . More jobs lost, an economy that flat lines instead of slowly growing again. The president , the current president has talked about this super v recovery. There is a super v for investors, for the investor class. There is not a super v for worker its hework ers here. 10 million jobs down than we were in february. We have to make up lost ground or next year will be tough, wean vaccines next year. Overnight we did get data back about the beginning of the Holiday Shopping season, the day after thanksgiving is always black friday, even if theres not a real thanksgiving or a real black friday. What do we know . About half as many people went to an actual store or went shopping in a physical location this year compared with last year, sort of accelerating whats been a trend to Online Shopping anyway. Online spending jumped 22 . I think youre going to see another record cyber monday here today. There were already some changes in Consumer Behavior in effect before the pandemic but i think the pandemic has changed how people feel. Those doorbusters, maybe those things are in the past forever, for good. You dont have people waiting in big crowds to get in to get a toaster or a big flat screen tv. That didnt happen this year. Are we going to go a debris not to get presents for each other . Oh, please, you always break that rule. Just to make you feel guilty. My present to you is no present. Your present is getting a present to make me mad at you. Guilt. Happy holidays. Christine romans thanks for being with us. New day continues right now.
