Petulance over his election defeat, but if that is the case, the president is fuming while rome burns. The country is on fire with the coronavirus pandemic. Those are the words from the republican governor of ohio, mike dewine, on fire. More than 150,000 new cases reported overnight, that is a record. A Record Number of people hospitalized. 900 american deaths reported just yesterday. A key model used by the white house projects that 2200 americans will die a day by midjanuary, 2,200 and that a total of 440,000 americans will be dead by march and thats if we do everything right, which we are not. Since we last heard the president s voice out loud 7,000 americans have died from coronavirus. Since we last heard the president s voice there have been 920,000 new cases. Thats remarkable. Joining us now to talk about this all is david axelrod, he is a former Senior Advisor to president obama and his campaign, and cnn White House Correspondent kaitlan collins. David, i want to talk about what happened with arizona last night finally being called for biden. This could be a moment of Huge National pride in terms of how well the u. S. Pulled off this election during a pandemic with record voter turnout. Record breaking turnout. People were so engaged, they wanted to exercise their vote and the dhs, the guy who is in charge of the unit that looks for all cybersecurity says it was the most secure election in American History. We could be doing a victory lap right now, but, of course, were not doing that because, you know, President Trump is fuming, we hear, from the reporting and staying inside and not talking and, of course, the guy chris grebbs who is in charge of that unit who had to look and comb for any election irregularities and fraud and didnt find any, he thinks that his head is on the chopping block and he will soon be gone. I dont know where he would get stuff like that. I dont know why his head would be on the chopping block. Look, i think youre absolutely right, this was a miracle, the degree to which this election came off so smoothly amid the worst pandemic in a century, record turnout. It is something to celebrate and, you know, the only reason that the president doesnt like the election is the outcome. There was an election official, i think, in georgia who said just because the president didnt win doesnt mean that its fraud. But in his mind it is. Ive said for months to you and others that there are only two outcomes for donald trump, either he wins or the election was fraudulent, and he is acting out now. What makes it worse is not just the damage hes inflicting on democracy but the fact that hes awol and in a pout at a time when were going through one of the greatest challenges that we faced in a long, long time with this pandemic. He is not ending in a way that will heap triumph on his presidency, thats for sure. 7,000 people have died since we last heard his voice. Actio axe, i want to talk to you about the Incoming Administration, they are the ones showing an interest in wanting to do something. Weve heard from ron klain who will be the white house chief of staff under President Biden starting january 20th and hes talking about whats happening behind the scenes and who joe biden is hearing from. Listen. Joe biden has spoken to republicans, hes spoken to some republican senators, some republican governors, im not going to go into the names. He has not spoken, though, to senator mcconnell. I think senator mcconnell still seems to be insisting somehow that President Trump won the election. He didnt. There will be a time and a place for joe biden and senator mcconnell to talk. They obviously need to introduction. So, david, im really interested in how the biden transition is going to choreograph the next two weeks, three weeks, until, you know, donald trump does something. Named ron klain as chief of staff. What more do you think they will do and what will we hear from joe biden publicly in the next few days . Well, first of all, lets be clear, it is not the acknowledgment of the president thats important, it is the ability of the Incoming Administration to interact with the Outgoing Administration on issues like the distribution of vaccines, for example, which is critical to the health and safety of the American People. On issues Like National security. We are starting to hear republican senators say the president elect should be getting security briefings as any incoming president would be getting. That is what is at stake here. I dont think joe biden loses sleep at night because donald trump doesnt want to acknowledge that he lost, but he may lose sleep knowing that his team that he assembled to work on this coronavirus epidemic or pandemic cannot know or have any visibility into what the Current Administration is doing. I think hes going to continue to do what hes doing, which is assembling his seem and gathering information as best as they can and hope that this hostage drama finally ends and they can talk the president into allowing his gsa director to sign the documents necessary for the transition to begin officially. Kaitlan, what is President Trump doing in that building behind you every day . He has still been in the oval office, hes actually been in the Oval Office Later and longer than he normally stays there back in before he lost the election based on what weve seen play out this week, but we havent actually seen the president except for when he went to Arlington Cemetery on veterans day, he want to the golf course twice over the weekend, but other than that he has not had any public appearances, the only thing on his public schedule are lunches with the Vice President , meeting with the secretary of state pompeo, but no events or anything like that. Today it does say hes going to receive an update on operation warped speed, that will be the first time the president has done anything coronavirus related on his schedule in recent weeks. Of course, he was on the road a lot before the election, of course, the election happened and we have not seen him keep an eye on the pandemic beyond implying there is a conspiracy to hurt him with how that data about a potential vaccine from pfizer was being released. So that will really be the first time we have seen that. Its been described as the president is abandoning these basic functions of governing while we are in this period where he is denying whats happened with the election, hes denying that joe biden has won, also denying joe bidens team, of course, access as david was noeg noting. Thats what the president has been up to. The question of whether or not the president is going to come to this conclusion anytime soon and move on and let the biden team have access, the last weve heard in the last 48 hours is its not going to happen soon. You do have reporting, kaitlan, which is interesting about the royal family, which is to say what the president is hearing from his heirs. Theyve always been split kind of with their advice coming to the president , they take a much different approach when you look at the donald trump jr. S and eric trumps and Jared Kushners and ivanka trumps. Jared kushner and ivanka trump are taking a more calculated approach to this but want the president to concede the election and admit reality and whats going on instead of continuing to fight and push baseless allegations. Weve seen eric trump and donald trump jr. Pushing the president even though theyve heard this is the most secure election in American History and no votes were changed. There is a split, but ultimately it is not, you know, this influence that donald trump jr. Is going to be the soul reason the president keeps this up. While theyre saying what the president wants to hear, theyre waiting on him to publicly come to terms with reality as well because until he does they cant. Kaitlan collins, david axelrod, thanks both for being with us. So by the time Joe Biden Takes Office we could see double the number of daily coronavirus infections, another 100,000 deaths, thats by january 20th according to a key model often cited by the u. S. Government and thats a low end estimate. Joining us now cnn chief medical correspondent dr. Sanjay gupta. This is the imhe model, sanjay, 220,000 deaths by midjanuary and 440,000 deaths by the beginning of march. What should bother people even more by the shocking numbers is this is the low end estimate. This is if we do things right and take actions, its even worse if we continue down the path were headed in for the next 68 days. Yeah, thats right. I mean, this is it was interesting when you look at these models very carefully and theyre models so you have to take it with a bit of a grain of salt, but even in these models it sort of counts on things proceeding the way that they are, but even in two thirds of the states that at some point they say certain mandates will go back into place, that certain stayathome orders will go back into place. Historically they have looked throughout this year because thats the only history we have with this pandemic and they find that when death rates get to a certain amount here in the United States or in europe, thats when these mandates are likely to go back in. So, you know, i mean, there is this idea that theres things that can be done now to prevent that from happening or, you know, you wait until you sort of red line in these places where hospitals are becoming overwhelmed like the doctor you were just speaking to in wisconsin, were seeing similar sorts of things in texas. Do you wait until you get to that breaking month to enact some of these mitigation measures or do you do some of that stuff now . That is probably the biggest decision that we have to make as a country or these individual states have to make on their own. Sanjay, you know, President Trump has never wanted to roll up his sleeves and do any of the kind of leadership or actions that could have helped flatten the curve here. The one thing they always hang their hat on is something that happened ten months ago with the halfbaked ban from flights from china though tens of thousands of people still came in because it was such a leaky ban, but thats the one thing that he and his supporters always took about, that he took decisive action. That was a long time ago. Now if he had a conscience he could just get out of the way. He could just get out of the way. Because being an impediment to president elect biden is killing people. Its dangerous. I was very comforted and i want to know what you think about this when we heard from dr. Celine gounder about this last hour and she said that they are working around it. That they themselves are going straight to governors and to local officials and disseminating their plan because they cant wait for the white house to decide to get involved. Yeah. So they dont have the mandate teeth, but ive heard the same thing and this idea of going to these state leaders or even city leaders in some cases and saying, look, here is the evidence, here is what can happen if we do nothing, here is what can happen if we even pull back some of what weve done but here is also what can happen if we start to do things in a smart way. I will give you a couple of examples. First of all, i totally agree with you, just the basics over the last ten months, testing, we are still not there on testing, tracing, do you even remember that word . That was actually a thing and we have never gotten our hands around tracing in most of the country. Now were seeing the ramifications, nearly 250,000 people who have died, hospitals becoming overwhelmed. I described it as a humanitarian disaster in the United States yesterday and i stand by those words. Preventable deaths the way that they are, hospitals becoming overweld md, this is what im used to seen traveling around the world. There are things that can be done now. Arizona and i bring up these hyper local examples because hopefully it inspires people. In arizona they were having real problems, numbers went up 151 im going back to the spring now. This is a state that said were absolutely not going to do mask mandates or any of that sort of stuff, communities around scottsdale they imposed mask requirements for a period of time. They limited public events, certain business closures, mostly bars because thats where people are clustered closely and cant mask. What happened . They had a 75 reduction over a threeweek period. It can be done. Were finding now that there are certain hot spots within communities that are the worst. Not shutting them down, but limiting maximum occupancy in gyms, in restaurants, in cafes and in hotels. If you do that, again, not shutting down, just limiting maximum occupancy, you can bring down viral transmission by 80 . We all want the vaccine and it sounds like its probably going to come, Second Quarter of next year for the general public, but there are some things that we can do now that were not doing, certainly not as a nation and unfortunately not in too many places across the country. Its really good to know we are not powerless, we can do some things as we see this cast fee unfolding before our eyes. Dr. Sanjay gupta, thank you very much for all the information as always. So more republicans are starting to call for president elect joe biden to get that critical intelligence, the briefings that he needs and access to government agencies. How President Trumps obstruction is threatening american lives next. So far the inhibition has been relatively minor, weve been able to proceed with building our covid task force, proceeding with our personnel meetings, proceeding with our policy meetings. We have space a private side of our transition is rented were working very effectively and working forward on business, but as time passes the unreasonable position of the administrator of the General Services administration to refuse to ascertain that joe biden is the apparent winner of the election as the statute requires will have an impact. That is ron klain who has been named as the chief of staff for president elect joe biden when he is inaugurated on january 20th. Joining us now is john podesta former white house chief of staff to president clinton, the founder and director of the center for american progress. He wrote an oped alongside andy carr saying there is a real problem, john, youre saying whats going on right now and the fact that the administration is not cooperating with the Biden Campaign on this transition. What bothers you most here . Well, first of all, the point we were making is that this was not at all like 2000, andy carr was chief of staff to president bush, he was incoming, i was outgoing, he was in 2000 we gave access to the president ial daily brief to governor bush, we sent the director of intelligence of the cia down to texas to give him full access to intelligence, but in this case but in that case the votes were only separated by 537 votes, as went florida went the election. The Florida Supreme Court ordered a recount. In this case there is no way for donald trump to be inaugurated on january 20th. Hes filing frivolous lawsuits, hes impeding the transition, hes directed at risk of firing the director of gsa from filing that finding that nonpartisan ascertainment that vice President Biden is indeed the president elect and Kamala Harris is the Vice President elect. And this is dangerous for the American People. They are of course trying to do the best they can, but as each day wears on their ability to plan for coronavirus intervention is delayed and slowed down. The 9 11 Commission Found that the slow transition and, again, i agree theres really no comparison here between the elections but the 9 11 Commission Found that the slower transition in 2000 contributed to some of the confusion inside the incoming bush administration. Im wondering what aired i cant concerns you most here . Is it the pandemic, because weve been told there is no coordination at all. The Trump Administration is refusing to coordinate in any way with the biden team on this pandemic and were seeing Record Numbers of new cases. Look, i think my personal opinion it is the pandemic. Pfizer had that announcement recently, everyone was buoyed by the fact that we may have a vaccine, but the biden team doesnt have access to the department of defense, which is making plans for distributing the vaccine. They dont have access to the fda, to the cdc, to the department of health and human services. So they are inhibited from creating the kind of plan and you just showed ron klain. Ron klain led the effort in the Obama Administration to get on top of the Ebola Outbreak in africa and not see it spread in the United States. We need that kind of planning and that sort of integration of our teams. You know, i ran the transition for president obama in 2008 and we had great support from the outgoing bush team, from the president to his chief of staff, josh bolton, we were in the middle of a financial crisis, hank paulsen worked hand in glove with the people who were coming in to try to ensure that obama had at least the option of doing something to rescue the Auto Industry which he ended up doing once he got in office. This is in stark contrast to what bipartisan process has been, what president s have done in the past, what their teams have done. I guess it comes as no surprise, since donald trump has broken every other rule, but in breaking these norms, in suggesting there was fraud when theres no evidence of that, he is really, i think, putting democracy at risk. You brought up president obama. This is what he had to say about it in an interview that will air on 60 minutes on sunday night. Listen. They appear to be motivated in part because the president doesnt like to lose and never admits loss. Im more troubled by the fact that other republican officials who clearly know better are going along with this, are humoring him in this fashion. It is one more step in delegitimizing not just the incoming biden administration, but democracy generally, and thats a dangerous path. When will republicans break, do you think, john . Well, you know, youve seen some governors do it, but theyve been willing to break with trump in the past like mike dewine, larry hogan, phil scott. The Congressional Republicans are really kind of pathetic. Finally a few of them have come out and said, he at least ought to have access to intelligence, but, you know, when will Mitch Mcconnell break . When will people do an intervention . Trump is kind of barricaded in the oval office. When are they going to go down there and tell him hes got to give up . I dont know. The Washington Post reported there is some speculation that the biden team that president elect joe biden might nominate former secretary of state Hillary Clinton to be the u. S. Ambassador to the United Nations the reason would be to show that the United States has the respect for the institution that may have been fading over the last few years. What do you think of that speculation . Do you think she would take the job . Well, look, i think she was a fantastic diplomate for the United States and did a wonderful job for the United States. Whether she wants to come back into Public Service is obviously her decision, but i think the Biden Harris Team would do well by having her advise them and perhaps put her in a senior position where she can do what she did for many years as secretary of state, of course a senator and first lady for this country. Thanks so much for being with us this morning. Thank you. As so many parents and kids deal with problems around schooling, teachers now sounding the alarm. Coronavirus cases surging across the nation, they fear heading back to the classroom. As coronavirus ravages america some School Districts like detroit and cincinnati are halting inperson classes and teachers have growing fears about the risks. Cnns Bianna Golodryga has our story. Reporter the first day was kind of like, oh, this is exciting, like im back with kids again, you know, i love seeing them facetoface, but by the second day it was pretty clear that this was very different. Reporter two days after houston Public Schools opened for inperson learning last night a fifth grade Language Arts teacher decided she had had enough. The scariest part is you just you have no idea what youre walking into. I could be putting my students at risk, i could be putting my family members at risk. Reporter shes one of the dozens of houston public schoolteachers asking for a different approach. I just had a teacher today talk to me and say i had never thought i would say this but we need to go back to virtual. Reporter protesting the covid19 protocols that leave them feeling unsafe. Yes, they have masks on but im walking into a room where i actually dont really know what im breathing in. You know, a lot of our schools theyre very old and theyre hvac and ac units are very, very old. Reporter gills school along with at least 17 other houston Public Schools were temporarily closed shortly after reopening. Today the district is reporting no school closures, though its dashboard lists over 100 active covid19 cases among students and staff as of thursday. Across the country teachers are expressing their anxiety over what they view as an unclear and inconsistent approach to safely reopening schools. This High School Teacher in boston tweeting last month her concerns about proper ventilati ventilation. When you are put in a situation where you dont know what the true risks are it kind of just wears on you and breaks you down. Reporter some teachers are contemplating leaving the field all together. Every day im thinking maybe i should just move on to something else, but you dont because you know that if you left those students that you would just potentially be like another person who left them. Reporter it was a highly polarized issue leading up to last weeks election. The transmittal rate to the teachers is very small, but i want to open the schools. All you teachers out there, not that many of you are going to die so dont worry about it. So dont worry about it. Come on. It became a political act, going back to school. Reporter joseph allen is the director of the Healthy Buildings programs at Harvard UniversitysChance School of public health. Once we talk about the science it takes away some of the anxieties. Thats why the controls make sense, masking, ventilation, distancing. Reporter rile early data shows schools arent the super spreaders many feared experts say a lack of a federal tracking system has made it more difficult to monitor spread within districts, a point that current education secretary betsy devos refutes. Im not sure there is a role for the department of education to compile and conduct that research. If my secretary of education is saying its not her job nor the federal governments job and sometimes the local government is like, well, its not really our job its the districts job and the district is going, well, were going to put it on the schools, inevitably it gets put on you. Its the department of education, thats their role. We need a strong federal response to start compiling this information. We are wear a mask. Reporter plekd biden has promised to give schools clear Effective National guidelines for reopening safely. Is there time now as the winter months are approaching to course correct . No question. Theres always something you can do. But the single most important measure is an easy one and thats universal masking. Wear a mask, alisyn, its as simple as that. We reached out for a statement in response to the story and they said facetoface instruction will continue to occur with safety esh measures in place in accordance with guidelines provided by the cdc, state and local health authorities. The health, safety and well being of our students and staff remains our stove priority as we work to meet the Educational Needs of all families in the district. I have to say from talking to education experts and School District officials across the country their main concern is there is no national plan. That is something that president elect joe biden is promising to focus on, something a lot of teachers are desperate to hear. We appreciate our teachers. I thank god every day for my teachers and my kids teachers, im sure you do as well. I have a Parent Teacher conference in just a few hours. These people need to be appreciated. They also have to have some more planning and to give them a sense of security in returning to the classroom. Well, jill biden is an educator who will be the first lady as joe biden has pointed out teachers will celebrate that. Bianna, thank you very much. Okay. So developing overnight, president elect joe biden has won arizona, the first democrat to flip that state in decades. How did the legacy of late senator john mccain affect voters there . I will be speaking to his widow, cindy mccain, about her decision to back joe biden next. Cnn projects joe biden wins arizona, pushing his electoral lead to 290 over President Trumps 217. Biden is just the Second Democratic president ial candidate to turn arizona blue in nearly 70 years. Joining us now is cindy mccain, the widow of the late republican senator john mccain. She is now a member of bidens Transition Team advisory board. Good morning, cindy. Great to see you. Good morning. How are you . Im doing well. Whats your response to joe biden winning arizona . Its wonderful. Its great news. I suspected all along he would, but its great to have it confirmed. I mean, you know, as we point out, this is only the second time in 70 years the ones ruby red arizona has gone for joe biden. What does that tell you . Well, i think it says a lot of things, actually. Arizona has is has always been a very moderate state, but in this case i think it was more about the person thats in the white house right now than it was so much a referendum on anything else. I think vice President Biden is going to make an incredible president and not only that, i think his standards, his values, the things that hes that he works for, working together, working across the aisle, making sure that he does things not for himself but for the good of the country, those are the values that hes always had and i look forward to watching him and participating in this down the line. Were just so excited here in arizona. I dont know if you read your daughters twitter feed, but have you seen the meme that she retweeted at about midnight last night . I did. I did. I love it. I will put it up for everyone else, its a picture of your husband shes awesome. Senator mccain. You have to have a sense of humor. I can hear that. Both you and megan obviously have had to have a sense of humor throughout all of these years and anyway, its senator mccain saying i like people who dont lose arizona. Im glad youre enjoying that. I know. I love my daughter, i think shes historical, i really do. Okay. So on a more serious note, even though joe biden has won arizona, he is now at 290 electoral votes, as you know, President Trump has not conceded, the race and scores of Republican Leaders are going along with his unreality and claiming that President Trump did not lose. So im just wondering what your husband, senator mccain, would be saying to them today. Well, he would be he would be telling these people it is time that we move on, it is time that we heal, its time that we support our president elect and also encourage the gsa to release the funds so that he can get on with his Transition Team, not only with making sure slots are filled and that the white house is ready to roll, but more importantly being able to deal with the people that are within the white house right now that worked with the pandemic. Thats perhaps our most important issue right now. I also heard you tell anderson that your husband would be going mccain on them. What would that sound like . Yeah. Well, the going mccain would not be on the voter electorate, but it might be on some of his folks that he worked with within the senate. As you know, john was one that stood for the deep honor and democratic process that this country represents and the fact that that is not necessarily occurring completely right now and that somehow there are people that might want to undermine the process would really in so many words rile him up, he would not be happy with that. Yes, he would be going mccain on it. As you know former president barack obama has a new memoire coming out next week and he has passages about your husband, i dont know if you have had a chance to read them, but let me read one for our viewers in which he talks about senator mccain. He said, he wasnt an ideologue, he respected not only the customs of the senate but also the institutions off you are government and our democracy. I never saw him display the racetinged nativism that regularly affected other republican politicians and on more than one occasion i had seen him display real political courage. Your thoughts . Well, he described my husband exactly. Thats what i miss most about many things, but i miss his voice right now in this government and in this time because he was always a voice for reason, especially on the issues of working together and making sure that we do it for the good of the country and not for personal gain. Do you think President Trump is going to run again in 2024 . Oh, gosh, who knows . I would hope that whatever occurs that we keep in mind, again, what is good for the country and most of all whats good for the American People as well. Weve got to Work Together. We are so divisive and so divided and with this huge lack of civility right now. We have such healing to be done and we cant do that if were not if both parties arent willing to Work Together and that includes a former President Trump. Cindy mccain, great to talk to you. Thanks so much for waking up early and being on new day with us. Thank you. All right.
