Thats joe biden naming ron klain as his white house chief of staff. What message does this send and what kind of person is ron klain . Well, first of all, the relationship between joe biden and ron klain goes back decades and i think that is the first message that it sends which is that this is a person, joe biden, who coming into office will have at his disposal just among the deepest benches i think of any president in recent history because he, himself, has been in government for so long and has had these relationships, but i think secondly ron klain is someone who led the Ebola Response for the Obama Administration and also was among the first to ring the alarm about this coronavirus pandemic, and he has been an adviser to joe biden on this issue throughout this process. It signals that biden understands that the pandemic is going to be the single most important problem for him to solve as president and thats saying a lot considering that joe biden back in 2008 came into office with barack obama dealing with an enormous financial crisis. My understanding from people who are close to biden is that he views this Current Crisis in a very similar vein and he wants the most experienced people around him and i think thats the message hes sending to the American People about his priorities but also the contrast with the Current Administration in the lack of experience that has characterized the president s appointments from the very beginning. And yet, david, we have 69 more days to be hung out to dry, to just be left swinging here during this pandemic that gets worse every single day and the death toll goes up every single day because, you know, joe biden isnt in the office yet and, similarly, were also vulnerable in terms of National Security. I know youve been looking into this. Hes being denied the president ial Daily Briefing, the highest level of it. So were vulnerable on so many fronts right now. Well, we are, alisyn, its this oddity of the moment in which you can feel power ebbing away every hour from the white house. Foreign leaders calling into biden, you know, the attention focusing really more to wilmington, ron klains ascension means youre going to begin to hear more and more about what americans should be doing on the coronavirus front, even though the president has not addressed it really since election day at all, as the numbers have gotten worse. And yet there are great opportunities and vacuums here. You know, the activity under way in the pentagon where theyre putting in loyalists makes you wonder is this going to be the moment where the israelis see a free two months to go act against iran and its Nuclear Program . Could you see the chinese or others acting out in a moment that they recognize that President Trump is not really fully in charge and yet, of course, president elect biden doesnt have the authority to respond or even to have substantive conversations with foreign leaders. David, if i could put this up on the screen it is interesting because its been noted that more foreign leaders have acknowledged joe bidens victory than republican senators, but there are a few foreign leaders who have not and that list is instructive. It includes vladimir putin, it includes bolsonaro of brazil, xi jinping and manuel of mexico. These are three authoritarians who benefited from dealing with President Trump who said he respected their power and their authority and who rarely got in their way on issues of human rights or questions of whether or not they were abiding by international law. The president only really turned on china after the crisis of the virus began and he, of course, was blaming china for it. I think theyre stuck right now. Putin recognizes that President Biden is coming after him. President elect biden has said in a statement to me for a story earlier this week that he was pretty clear what he was planning to go do in dealing with russia far more harshly than President Trump ever has. I think the chinese are trying to figure it out at this moment, john, because we recognize that donald trump was the man who was mostly interested in cutting deals and im not sure that thats going to be bidens initial reaction. At the same time President Biden is going to have to figure out hard issues with them early on including how youre going to distribute Coronavirus Vaccine fairly around the world. Abby, when does this obstructionism on National Security and our National Health end . I mean, it was interesting, the senator James Langford, a republican, said yesterday hes giving the administration basically until tomorrow to start briefing president elect biden with these all of this National Security intel that hes entitled to or hes going to take some action, and so will we start hearing more of that today . Yeah, well, i think that part certainly could end as soon as tomorrow, but there are some other problems including that a lot of the calls that you just discussed, they were made not in a secure environment because the state department has not facilitated that part of the transition, either. So you have joe biden having conversations with other foreign leaders basically kind of on an open mic and without the help of the state department to facilitate the calls, for translation services, those kinds of things. So there are layers of this even beyond the president ial Daily Briefing that need to be resolved and probably as quickly as possible. I still think that there are real questions about whether or not, you know, there will be continued risks to National Security. If there continue to be delays in getting transition officials with the biden transition security clearances and getting them into these National Security getting these landing teams into these National Security agencies. I think we have a long way to go and there needs to be more movement, but that is largely up to President Trump because he remains the head of the executive branch and the only thing i think that might move the president at this point is if more republicans speaks up more loudly and frankly more clearly because even what James Langford is saying, senator langford is saying in that statement, seems to leave open the possibility that the president can overturn the results of the election which we all know is not going to happen. So i think more clarity on the republican side is definitely necessary to get the president moving along on this. Im laughing because karl rove wrote this oped that was 2,000 words and six of them were basically but nothing is going to overturn the outcome of the election. Those six words are probably the most important. Thank you, great to see you. Thank you. Sanjay gupta told us that the deadly coronavirus pandemic in the u. S. Has turned into a humanitarian disaster. The u. S. Set another record for new cases yesterday, more than 144,000. More than 65,000 people are waking up in the hospital this morning, thats the highest ever. The death count is also breaking records. So sanjay is back with us now along with michael osterholm, he is the director of the center of Infectious Disease research and policy at the university of minnesota, he is also a member of president elect joe bidens covid19 advisory board. Sanjay, what makes it a humanitarian crisis now . Well, you know, ive covered a lot of humanitarian crises around the world, there is sometimes a singular event like an earthquake or some sort of natural disaster, or a series of events, you know . I mean, ive covered if a minut famines, ive covered natural disasters. This pandemic i think is the worst. Before now i think the earthquake in haiti was the toughest story i think i ever covered and some 250,000 people died there over that year, you know, in 2010. I mean, thats what were seeing here and i think the idea that so many of these deaths that are happening in the United States are preventable just adds to that idea that this is a true humanitarian crisis. Doctors without borders have come to the United States to do their work. They go to the hottest spots in the world, they look at the earth and say where are we needed . Theyre needed here in the United States right now. I know its tough to hear, i have already gotten a lot of emails and social about the fact that i call this a humanitarian disaster but i stand by it, it is, and hopefully it inspires people to do Something Like this. Michael osterholm, you call this covid hell that were entering. Why . Yeah, i agree with sanjay and i think that his assessment is right on the mark right now and i think what both of us realize is where were actually going. All that were doing right now doesnt seem to be having much impact on this curve. The case numbers are going up faster and faster every day, both for cases and for hospitalizations and deaths. I dont think we have an idea yet where this is going to top out. So imagine how bad it is now, only anticipate what its going to be like over the weeks and months ahead. And, michael, in fact, are you suggesting that now is the time and i know people dont like to hear this for a shutdown, something limited, finite, four to six weeks and that that could help turn it around . Well, you know, one of the things thats happened, alisyn, is that this has become such a polarized issue. You know, when we have this situation going on our economy is going to suffer miserably. I believe that small businesses, schools, Health Care Centers all want to do the right thing but its very hard right now without Financial Support to do that, to keep people apart. You know, there are a lot of people out there that are scrambling to find work because they are literally in dire straits. What can we do as a government right now to help them help us try to deal with this pandemic . And one of the ways to do that is keep people from having to go into Public Places unless its absolutely essential. We need a Financial Support for that to happen. Thats what were talking about right now. So, sanjay, i know people may feel like theyre lost in the numbers, that we say 65,000 people hospitalized, which is a record, an alarming record, but what does that mean . How can you explain to people how bad it is and how much worse this could really get . And im talking about soon. Yeah, i mean, first of all, youre absolutely right, i was doing this interview with a professor who describes this term compassion fade and basically its this idea that if i were to tell you the story of one individual and all that was happening to that one individual people really care. If i start to say its tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands of people, not only does the amount of compassion go down overall, but for each individual but it goes down overall, meaning you have less compassion for thousands of people than you might for that one person. So were seeing that and its tough. Its tough from a messaging sort of reporting standpoint because people do get lost in these numbers, but what does it mean . I mean, dr. Osterholm has taught me this, this idea that ultimately if hospitals become really pushed to the point where they can no longer take patients and people in these communities are trying to get their loved one who is having a hard time breathing into a hospital and theyre being told were full or they have to be moved out of state or to a different region i think it becomes very real for people at that point. You know, john, i dont know what it would take frankly at this point. I mean, its really frustrating to be honest with you. We tell you 60,000 people are in the hospital right now because theyre sick with covid. Nearly 250,000 people have died. It should be enough. If i tell you that the numbers of people who are infect sd likely to go to 300,000 by the end of the year according to the models, that 2,200 people will die every day by the end of january according to the models and 400,000 will have died by february, isnt that enough . I dont know. I guess, john, im flailing here on the answer to your question because i feel like we have explained this over and over again for eight or nine months now and theres solutions. Were not just presenting a problem, were presenting a problem followed by solutions and yet its still not resonating for some reason. It takes leadership and i think that a lot of people do comply when their leaders present the compelling case, i think that here in the northeast thats what happened when governors decided that, you know, we had to start buckling up things and people did comply and stay home and wear masks and everything. So, dr. Osterholm, do you think that we are on the verge of look, i know each governor does their own thing, in south dakota the governor prides herself on having given freedom to people and you can just see i dont know if we have it the numbers since people were free to do whatever, you know, she said they should and they wanted, the number has just gone up exponentially there in terms of the cases. Do you think that we are on the cusp of seeing other governors start to do what youre suggesting . You know, i think the pain and frustration that youre hearing in sanjays voice and mine is one that, as he said, we do know what we can do about this. Look what the Asian Countries have done, australia, nina dos santos, they actually have brought this under control. All were asking right now is to get us to that vaccine land, you know, wait just a few more months and try to postpone these illnesses and allow people to develop their immunity with the vaccine. Its not like were asking for months and months and months of this kind of situation. But we also have to recognize what were doing is not working. We need to figure out ways to help support business, schools. I mean, how can you run a business when you dont have schools open because, in fact, those kids are now at home. We have got to understand weve got to get this pandemic under control if were even going to bring back business. So we need new ways to do this, to get people to understand exactly what sanjay just said. Sanjay, michael osterholm, thank you both so much for being with us. Obviously people do need to Pay Attention and we do need leadership and there are some places in the country where theyre seeing it. Obviously ohio, seeing a Record Number of coronavirus patients in the hospital, the governor went on tv last night, spoke to the people in that state, issuing new restrictions, taking action. He calls this wave the most intense hes seen. Governor dewine joins us next. So how bad is the coronavirus pandemic this morning . Look at hospitalizations in ohio, about 3,000 people now hospitalized there. Nearly 1,000 of them checked into the hospital since last wednesday. 1,000 new patients in a week. Thats how quickly its exploding. Joining us now is the republican governor of ohio, mike dewine. Governor dewine, you went on tv, spoke to the people in ohio last night, you told them that the pandemic was more widespread, more intense, more dangerous. What are you seeing . Well, youve described it very well. Hospitalizations, you know, a month ago they were at 1,000, today they are 3,000 and in the last week its just exploded. Our cases have gone from about 1,000 cases to now 6,000 cases and our positivity rates have gone from 2. 5 to about 12. So by the numbers its just very scary. Were seeing this in our rural areas, the first wave in the spring and then the summer really did not hit our small towns, our small communities. They are really hitting there now, in fact, theyre leading as far as the number of cases. So one of the things i talked about last night was what people do in their individual lives. We put some additional orders on last night, for example, with regard to masking. We have had a statewide mask order since july, but we will send agents out now to start enforcing that in our retail establishments. Where were really seeing the huge spread is just people in their own personal lives. Were seeing huge spreads from funerals, weddings, just people getting together to watch football. Thats really where were seeing it spread. The message that i gave to people last night is weve just got to wear masks and if you are outside your bubble, if you are outside people who live in your own household, in your own house, you need to be careful. You need to be wearing a mask because you have no idea whether they have the virus and they dont have an idea many times and you might be carrying it yourself. So this mask weve learned does so much, you know, in the spring we didnt really understand that, today we really do. So you put some new restrictions in place, youve put some new sanctions in regards to masking if it doesnt happen in stores and penalties in place. What happens if this doesnt work . You also talked about that. What are the metrics you are looking at and what next . Well, if we dont turn this thing around quickly, you know, were going to have no choice but to close bars, you know, Fitness Centers as well. So that will be the next the next step. But, you know, my message to ohioans is its not so much what i order or what the Health Department orders its really what you do in your individual life. You can control this. And it really is true. I mean, our schools are doing a phenomenal job. We dont think were seeing a lot of spread directly in the classroom and why is that . Its because we mandated that every student, everybody in that School Building has to wear a mask and, guess what, these kids are doing a phenomenal job, the teachers are doing a phenomenal job, principals and superintendents and we are not seeing much spread there. Its a good lesson i think for all of us. If we can do that in school we ought to be able to do that in our own personal lives. What message has the president of the United States delivered to the people of ohio in terms of the pandemic over the last several days . Well, i dont think weve heard anything in the last several days. You know, one of the things that were very excited about obviously is the ability to give people shots and, you know, we hope that is coming. I mean, the white house tells us thats coming in january or, excuse me, in december and were going to roll it out just as fast as we get it. And thats great. Essential workers first. Thats terrific news but thats a while from now. Oh, no, thats right. We have to deal with the now. The president hasnt spoken out loud in six days. Im just curious about what you think about it. Look, its not impacting what i do, its not impacting what we do in ohio. Were moving forward. One of the things i do want to mention, talking about the white house, you know, we have had great communication, the Vice President has led this charge, you know, every week we are on the phone, usually the Vice President is there, and the public doesnt hear t you dont hear it, but its governors, democrat and republicans, and we are just kind of rolling up our sleeves working with the Vice President and working with the people, the doctors that they put on the phone so thats been very helpful, frankly, as weve gone through this. Thats good news and i hope youre getting the support that you need. I am sure that you dont have the time that you have had every four years to Pay Attention to politics but at this point as you think here this morning who do you think won the president ial election . Look, i think that we need to consider the former Vice President as the president elect. Joe biden is president elect. The white house has every the president and his campaign has every right to go into court, our courts are open, our courts are the best place, frankly, to adjudicate facts. Im a former prosecutor, im a great believer in the ability to have your courts and go in to make a case and they have every right to do that and that looks like what theyre trying to do. As far as you can see how would you assess the merits of their case . I dont know. Look, im worried about this virus, im not looking at what the merits of the case are. It would appear that joe biden is going to be the next president of the United States but, look, we just all need to take a deep breath. There is a process for all of this. You need to follow the process. And we need to move this country forward. I think the most important thing is that we come together as a country. You know, we have a common enemy, its not republicans and its not democrats, our common enemy is this virus. This is a once in 100 year tragedy and, you know, weve got to pull all of us together and thats what im trying to do in ohio is pull democrats, republicans, independents, everybody together. Lets fight this virus, lets dont fight each other. Youve done that from the beginning and i think people on both sides of the aisle acknowledge this battle youre fighting in ohio publicly going out there and leveling with the people in your state. So we respect and honor the work that youve done. Thanks for being with us this morning. Good to be with you. Thank you very much. Okay. John, in georgia millions of ballots in the president ial race are going to be counted, recounted, by hand. President elect joe biden is leading President Trump in that state by 14,000 votes. Now, of course, focus shifts to the senate races which are headed for runoffs with the balance of power in the senate on the line. Cnns kyung lah is live in atlanta with more. Whats happening there this morning . Reporter good morning, alisyn, that hand count that youre talking about could begin here in the state of georgia as soon as today and this is happening against this backdrop as the focus of the political world now shifts to the Georgia Senate runoff. Its all on the line. All eyes in this country are on georgia. We are going to save the country. Reporter control of the u. S. Senate comes down to two Senate Runoffs in georgia, two incumbent republican senators, Kelly Loeffler and david perdue, are rallying their base, in part by attacking a member of their own party, the republican secretary of state in charge of the election, the senators are calling on brad rachffenspergero resign, questioning the legitimacy of the results, without offering any specific evidence to support their claims. I have my job to do and i will follow it faithfully. I think that integrity still matters. Reporter raffensperger fired back saying that he will not resign but today announced a hand recount of the nearly 5 million ballots in the president ial race in the state. Joe biden currently leads by more than 14,000 votes. Obviously this is a very close race and people that were on one side of the aisle dont like the results. I get that. Im a republican. But the results will be the results. Reporter georgias leading paper condemned the senators efforts to muddy the States Election results, slamming them as baseless accusations, reckless and risky sideshow. Senator loefflers democratic challenger reverend Rafael Warnock jumped on the editorial saying loeffler intentionally seeks to erode trust in our democracy for her own political benefit. And senator perdues opponent democrat jon ossoff also seized on the republican inciting calling it a distraction. Theyre fighting amongst themselves over the Election Results but the people have spoken. This is literally, you know, the showdown of all showdowns in terms of politics. Reporter back at the crowded indoor republican rally florida senator marco rubio traveled in to stump for his georgia colleagues, bolstering their message of distrust. I dont think politicians, i dont think the media enjoy the credibility any longer to tell people what to believe about these things. Reporter turned to the crowd, many not Wearing Masks and despite no evidence of widespread voting fraud, supporters say they dont trust the system worked. I think theres something to it. This is the tip of the iceberg. Reporter slrtly after we did the interview with that gentleman you just saw the room became very full, people were Standing Shoulder to shoulder. This is indoors, no ventilation that we could feel, no windows and a very crowded place with a lot of people who were not Wearing Masks. So for the safety of our crew, we put the live camera up, rolling in the back so we could watch what was happening, and we left. Alisyn . Good thinking. Stay safe. And we will check back in with you. Wall street likes joe bidens victory, but the Unemployment Crisis shows no sign of letting up. A new snapshot of the economy next. I know that every single day it seems we reach a new and previously unthinkable level in the coronavirus crisis. We are all searching for ways to stay safe. Dr. Sanjay gupta is back now with some tips in heres to your health. Sanjay . You know, we cant talk about masks enough, alisyn, because it is still one of our best tools to help fight this pandemic. I quickly want to show you the types of masks that we are talking about. You want to think about the number of layers, the fabric and think about the fit when you think about masks. So this is like my daughters gator, a single layer like this may not actually be enough. Its kind of not think enough and its just a single layer. Another daughter made this mask for me, three layers and a pretty good fit. So these types of masks actually do quite a bit to protect people around you and as weve learned from the cdc recently to help protect you as well. Surgical masks will be better this, type of material, this is the kind with the ear loops, this does a good job if you can get your hands on surgical masks, they are more widely available now, this will be one of your best bets going into the next couple of months. In the hospital we wear it with ties to we can tie it more snugly and get that fit around your nose and mouth. You really have to get it over your nose, make sure it stays over your nose, were talking about virus from the nose and the mouth. A type of mask we wear in the hospital in highrisk environments if we think we are going to be taking care of covid patients, n95 mask, this is the gold standard. This has great fit, its a great material, but it also is electro statically charged so it can help capture the virus, think of a blanket in the dryer capturing all the socks. This is what this n95 mask does as well. One can argue many places in the public can be considered a highrisk situation. These n95 masks may be something that may become more widely recommended depending on whats happening. This is one that my wife got me, im not sure what to make of it, she tells me i should wear this quite a bit. Maybe i talk too much. I dont know. 18 jokes just went through my head and none of them will let me keep my job. Sanjay, thank you very much. I appreciate it. Breaking moments ago, first time unemployment claims are still stubbornly high as the jobs crisis joins us. Christine romans joins us now with those numbers. It means zip it, john berman, just zip it, right now, dont let anything bad happen to you. 709,000 net new job losses in the most recent week, this is the lowest number since the crisis began but this is still bigger than anything we have ever seen prepandemic so these are 709,000 people, families, who lost a job. When you add in the pandemic Unemployment Insurance its almost a Million People in the most recent week. This has been the drum beat, 34 weeks of this. Im glad that line is leveling off but you want to see the numbers coming down. When you look at continuing claims that fell, but it might have fallen for the wrong reason. Most states only give 26 weeks of state benefits, that kicks people off on to the federal programs that will also be winding up here very soon. All together you have 21. 1 Million People getting some sort of jobless benefit in this country. John, this is still a jobs crisis when you have 21 Million People on jobless benefits. We know we lost more than 22 million jobs when the crash happened in the economy, the big shut downs, we know about 12 million have come back and now is really a critical time to get assistance to people so they can weather this covid storm into next year when we hope a vaccine will be able to help people. This thing is not over. Its not over. Christine romans, thanks so much. We do have breaking news, a helicopter with americans on board has crashed in egypt. We have the breaking details from the pentagon next. At dell technologies, we started by making the cloud easier to manage. But we didnt stop there. We made a cloud flexible enough to adapt to any size business. No matter what it does, or how it changes. And we kept going. So you only pay for what you use. Because at dell technologies, we stop. At nothing. Announcer this is cnn breaking news. All right. This is the breaking news, a helicopter on a peacekeeping mission has crashed in the desert of egypts sinai pens l. A. Cnn was told u. S. Personnel are involved. Lets get right to Barbara Starr live at the pentagon. What have you learned . At this hour the pentagon trying to determine exactly what has occurred here and thats why theyre being very specific with this language of these very first reports. U. S. Personnel involved. They are trying to get a Firm Understanding of what exactly may have occurred, whether any u. S. Personnel have indeed been injured or killed. They are not able to confirm that to the news media at the moment. U. S. What are u. S. Personnel doing in sinai . Well, this dates back to the 1979 peace accord between egypt and israel, a Multinational Observer force was established and the u. S. Has been part of that force in sinai ever since then. Now, back in 2016 u. S. Military personnel moved deeper into southern sinai because of militant activity that they had been on the receiving end, rocket attacks, that kind of thing, from their original positions near the egyptian israeli border. So they moved south back in 2016 and they started using remote technology, cameras, that sort of thing so they didnt have to be out on the road so much when militant activity was at its peak. This morning we do not know how this helicopter went down, of course, we are not being told that just yet, so we dont know, i want to emphasize whether it was an accident or some kind of deliberate act by some adversary in sinai. Militants have been active there over the years, but we just dont know very much yet about what has happened. We are expecting the statement were told shortly from the Multinational Observer force, from the commanders, the head of the force, and we expect that in the coming minutes and hours we will get more information about whats exactly transpired. John, if this is a mass casualty incident, if you will, if multiple u. S. Personnel, civilian or military, have been killed or injured, this will be something that should and would be brought immediately to President Trumps attention. John . And a tragedy. Listen, we will let you get back to reporting. Barbara starr, please keep us posted as to what you learned. Will do. John, after george floyd was killed in may nfl star emanuel ach cho created a web series to start a dialogue about racism for white and black americans. Now he has written a new book based on that series called Uncomfortable Conversations with a black man. In it he tackles the tough issues of voter suppression, White Privilege and systemic racism. Emanuel acho joins me now. Alisyn, so good to be with you. When you and i last spoke it was june and you had just started your series and it was getting all sorts of buzz and going viral and so why a book . I mean, what different impact do you think a book has than a series like that . Yeah, alisyn, when i started this it was to change hearts, to bridge reconciliation in our world which so desperately needs t but i realized that the spoken word has sizzle, it will get clicks, it will get shares but the written word it has substance and i wanted to hand people a figurative baton to run a relay race towards reconciliation. Its not just about us. If we truly want to cure racism in our head and in our hearts its also about the next generation. So i wanted to give people a book, something that they could touch, that they could grab so i could elaborate on these concepts. So many of my White Brothers and sisters about race, they have questions about black culture that they dont understand because theyve never been immersed in it. So i said consider my a friend to help educate and grow empathy. I totally understand that. The power of the written word and the power of books. I want to read a little portion of it and this one i think is so important. I mean, this is happening in my house, but i dont know if its i dont know if its manifesting out in the real world so here is what you say, the first way to end racism is for my white counterparts to get out of denial, to understand that, wait a second, maybe youve been lying to yourself about the existence of racism this whole time. You need a counter voice in your head when you notice your internal monologue ushering you towards making a biased decision or judgment against black people. Everyone and i mean everyone has biases, its the job of empathetic and considerate people not to let them dictate actions that harm others. You know, i mean, my kids and i are having these conversations at our dinner table but i dont know if youre seeing that in the real world. Are you seeing some sort of transition of white people think out there . I absolutely am. See, alisyn, at first there were a lot of great intentions, so many white people who were saying, okay, emanuel, i get it now, i want to be a part of the solution not the problem, but, alisyn, intention without direction is meaningless. And so i wrote the book to give some people more direction. Its not just that you want to help, you have to know how to help, you also need to know what it is that youre helping. I get that people now want to get into the game, but you have to understand the rules of engagement and you have to understand the game in which you are playing. When i talked about denial i say dee files denial dont even know i am lying. You cant fix a problem that you do not know exists. Now that people know the problem exists im trying to give people a tool to help them fix the longest lasting plague of a mental virus in america. I want to play for you something that also got a lot of attention and thats our own van jones, you know, the day that it was declared that joe biden would be the president elect. And his immediate response. Lets play this. If you are muslim in this country, you dont have to worry if the president doesnt want you here. If youre immigrant you dont have to worry if the president is going to be happy to have baby snatched away or send dreamers back for no reason. [ inaudible ] for a lot of people who have really suffered, you know, the i cant breathe, you know, that wasnt just george floyd, thats a lot of people that felt they couldnt breathe. Could you relate to that moment, emanuel . Yeah, i could. Even hearing van there it kind of makes my heart break because i just want people to know that so many of these emotions are real, so many of these emotions felt by black and brown men and women and others theyre real. As a tv person myself i understand if i am on camera that emotional there is an overflow of my heart that is now causing my mouth to speak and so i understand where van is coming from, where van jones is coming from in terms of we all just want peace, unity, love, we want to go back to being the United States of america and the operative word there is united. I know that, you know, part of the point of your series and the book and everything is that no topic is taboo or youre trying to shine some light on all of these taboo topics. Has there been a question that has been posed to you or that has come up during the series that has shocked you or surprised you . The most shocking question i got, it was a question that said, emanuel, slavery was longer ago and less lethal than the holocaust but black people havent been able to recover where jewish people have been able to recover. How is that . And i had to pause for a second because that question was incredibly hurtful, incredibly ignorant and also incredibly rude, but i say that, alisyn, nothing great can come until we get uncomfortable and so i paused and i delivered my answer. I think that we have to remember in our world, in our society, until we get uncomfortable we cant grow. When you think about a woman delivering a beautiful child into this world, she gets uncomfortable for a long period of time. Alisyn, i played in the National Football league, if you ever want to get to a super bowl you must first go through the discomfort of a Training Camp. If we want to grow towards reconciliation weve got to get uncomfortable and having some Uncomfortable Conversations. I will trade you your Training Camp for delivery, for child delivery. No thank you. Then we will really understand each other. The book again is Uncomfortable Conversations with a black man. Emanuel acho, always straight grate to talk to you.
