And he talks about dont worry, its all going to be over soon. Come on. Theres not another serious scientist in the world who think its going to be over soon. I said were learning to live with it. We have no choice. We cant lock ourselves up in a basement like joe does. Biden condemning the Trump Administrations Coronavirus Response and looked straight to camera, speaking directly to voters impacted by the pandemic. You folks at home will have an empty chair at the Kitchen Table this morning, that man or wife going to bed tonight and reaching over to try to touch, out of habit, where their wife or husband was is gone. Learning to live with it, come on. Were dying with it. The president continued to paint himself as a washington outsider. And biden as a career politician, the democratic nominee aimed to depict trump as a failed first term president. Theres a reason hes bringing up all this malarkey. Theres a reason for it. He doesnt want to talk about the substantiative issues. Its not about his family and my family tr family, its about your family. Lets get off this china thing, just a typical politician. Trump criticized bidens stance on fossil fuels in a move aimed to hurt the former Vice President in key swing states like pennsylvania, michigan and ohio. I would transition from the oil industry, yes. Oh, thats a big statement. The oil industry pollutes significantly. I see. Thats a big statement. If you let me finish the statement because it has to be replaced by Renewable Energy over time. Over time. And id stop giving to the oil industry, id stop giving them federal subsidies. On immigration, biden called out the president on the 545 Migrant Children who have been separated from their parents. What happened, parents, their kids were ripped from their arms and separated, and now they cannot find over 500 sets of those parents and those kids are alone. Nowhere to go. Nowhere to go. Its criminal. They are so well taken care of. Theyre in facilities that were so clean. But some of them havent been reunited with their families. One question, who built the cages. When pressed on his record on race, trump made this claim. I am the least racist person. I cant even see the audience because its so dark, but i dont care whos in the audience, im the least racist person in this room. Abraham lincoln here is one of the most racist president s we have had in modern history. He pours fuel on every single racist fire. Every single one. We have the debates behind us so now its back to the campaign trail. President trump heads to florida today for a pair of rallies. Vice President Joe Biden is in delaware. Hes going to give remarking on the coronavirus pandemic, and th his plan to get country out of it. Meantime, bidens top surrogate, president obama heads to florida tomorrow, allison. Jessica, thank you very much for all of that. Joining us now to talk about it, we have cnn political commentator, errol louis, the political anchor at spectrum news, cnn political analyst, jon avalon, and cnn political analyst, for axios. John avlon, your thoughts, your take aways, what did you learn last night . Who won . I thought it was a more substantiative debate than the first one, but it didnt detract from the volume of lies we heard, and i think a lot of folks are grading it on a curve. Look, you know, biden actually was stronger than the first debate, in terms of substance and delivery. So was trump but hes being judged against nhis first debat, one of the great disaster in president ial history, lighting himself on fire doesnt make it a successful debate, compared to the first one s. I agree. Whether or not second debate trump beat first debate trump is irrelevant. Its whether he beat biden in a way that changes the trajectory of the race, we have this poll which seems to indicate no. What i saw was a president who turned in a better debate performance but riffed through a lot of his talking points. This was kind of like one of his rally, he did it in slow motion. Hit all kind of points, many of which were very sort of obscure that if youre not following politics every day, you wouldnt necessarily know what he was talking about with in laptop and all of these accusations about joe bidens son or how this fits into a world where we have mass unemployment, mass hunger, the coronavirus itself, he seemed to be talking to an entirely Different Group than the voters who are in front of him. This was the whole country, this was for everybody a real sort of slow pitch over the fat middle of the plate, joe biden knocks it out of the park. Science over fiction, hope over fear, and trump went into some other kind of place where, again, he likes to hit these partisan points which gets his base excited. If thats all hes doing, getting his base excited, hes really not making the best use of an incredible forum, which is what that debate was last night, john. Margaret, what did you see . Well, to me, the fact that this centrally worked because of the threat of a mute button, kind of tells you everything we need to know about the moment were at, and i really do think that had a tremendous amount to do with the fact that this debate stayed on the rails. What i look to is what President Trumps own team put out after the debate, what do they think were their moments of strength. It was the economy. It was joe bidens comments on oil, which i think on the flipside could actually motivate turn out of younger and more progressive voters. It was the attempt to tie Vice President biden to some of his sons problems or questionable issues, and it was targeting black american men. But these are all around the edges that have to do with turnout in the final days. The Trump Campaign didnt put out anything about health care or anything about the coronavirus in terms of points that they really seemed to think that they won on. These were the first two major topics of the debate, and theyre the moments that bidens strength played to, and the moments that most Americans Care about right now. Its an interesting point. I want to play one piece of sound that i know you think is very important, and encapsulates what margaret and all of you have been talking about which is some of the discussion particularly driven by the president , which is about some of these ancillary issues where on things that matter to the American People, they may have seen something different. Watch this. This is s 5. Youre sitting at the Kitchen Table this morning deciding we cant get new tires, theyre bald, because we have to wait another month or so. Are we going to be able to pay the mortgage. Whos going to tell her she cant go back to Community College, theyre the decisions youre making in the middle class families that i grew up in in scranton. A typical political statement. Lets get off the china thing, and then he looks at the family, around the table, everything just a typical politician, when i say that. Im not a typical politician, thats why i got elected. Lets get off the subject of china and talk about sitting around the table. Come on, joe, you can do better than that. Why did you think that was so important. My jaw dropped. That was one of the great gaffes of modern debating. Yes, its a little folksy, its a little bit corny, but theres a reason that politicians look into the camera, theres a reason that they tick off things that real families are going through like being able to pay for Community College or change the tires on your car. Thats real. At a time when we have had mass unemployment, and people really dealing with real things. To just kind of scotch at it, the way the president did, just showed that youre completely out of touch. Theres always this poll question that goes out, and it has increased meaning as we get closer to election day, which is do you think the candidate cares about people like me, and by that standard, he just threw it away. Its not that he failed, he scorned the very idea of trying to appeal to the real world of people making hard decisions in their own lives. Folksy and corny are joe bidens middle name, john. People have believed thats authentic. I thought it was malarkey. I forgot about that. What we heard President Trump was going to do was go after joe bidens son, with whatever you call it, whatever is going on on that side with Rudy Giuliani and a laptop, he didnt seem to be able to articulate it last night. Well, i mean, i think in part thats because its sort of a crazy quilt at this point which has all the hallmarks of russian disinformation. It wasnt for lack of trying. What he would do strategically, mark made a good point, he was restrained to his benefit by the mute button in the front. It didnt result in joe biden hurting himself. It focused him. Once that mute button window was over, he would take his 30 second response and immediately try to pivot to an attack. It was an attack only clear to people deep in the ecosystem echo chamber, but he kept hitting it and hitting it, and biden did take the bait once or twice. It got under his skin with a degree of frustration. He also turned it around, and wasnt one to bring up the president s taxes and drew blood that may not have happened otherwise. Margaret, the pandemic is clearly the issue is that overshadowed this entire debate. We had 75,000 new cases. 41,000 new hospitalizations, which is a level we havent been at in two months. In so far as that is the issue facing the American People right now. How do you think each candidate addressed that, and the way they addressed it, how did it play at home. I actually thought that the way they each addressed it does truly reflect their positions, the positions on which they have been running for several months. President trumps is to say, look, the economy is completely bound to this, and we have to drive through it, deal with the casualties, and try to keep the economy on track, or things will be worse. Bidens argument, you cant keep the economy on track until you contain the virus. Those are the fundamental closing arguments of both men. The details matter, of course, and the facts matter, and everyone was Fact Checking this until 3 00 in the morning, but fundamentally, those are the two arguments and, they play to each candidates bases. In some of the battleground states where the economic has been felt most, and noncollege educated white men whose votes have the biggest potential to pivot, President Trumps argument may play stronger but nonetheless, this is a dividing line for women, for seniors, and i was really glad to see the debate truly reflect so that you know what youre getting in terms of these votes. The arguments that both men are making. Panel stick around, we have many more questions for you. We have to deal with race and immigration, and climate. President trump built them, and then it was determined they were built in 2014. That was him. Back with us, errol louis, john avlon, tomlin. The issue is 545 children who were separated from their parents because of the Trump Administration policy, their parents havent been located and this is years now after it happened, and you saw the exchange there of how each candidate is approaching that really tragedy at this point. The president also said oh, theyre in great conditions, which frankly isnt true. We dont know how the conditions are that they are being held in right now. Again, i ask you, how did that moment play . Its shocking. All of us here are parents. We know this is an unfathomable horror, the idea that your young child in many cases is simply gone. You dont know where they are, what conditions theyre under. It goes to a core question of competence. Joe biden has really pushed donald trump and the administration over their response to the coronavirus pandemic but this was, you know, whatever side of the immigration issue youre on, this was a case where absolutely unacceptable. You know, again, unthinkable, really kind of basic blocking and tackling. If you want to implement this policy as controversial and potentially cruel as it might be, you got to get it rightment a get it right. And for the president to acknowledge, they have no idea, there was no plan on how to get it undone, and he kind of left it hanging out there. There again, points to joe biden who already is leading in the polls, and another missed opportunity for the president. Lets talk about racism. I know you flagged this moment as being illuminating, so lets watch this. With the exception of abraham lincoln, possible exception, but the exception of abraham lincoln, nobody has done what i have done. Abraham lincoln here is one of the most racist president s weve had in modern history, he pours fuel on every single racist fire. Every single one. Started off his campaign coming down the escalator saying he was going to get rid of those mexican rapists, he has banned muslims because theyre muslims. He has moved around and made everything worse across the board. Margaret, what did you hear . I heard President Trump not messaging to all voters of color. I heard President Trump messaging to a relatively small but potentially important share of black american men voters and what hes doing is he knows that joe biden feels vulnerable or defensive to symptom extent for his role in the 94 crime bill. Biden trying to turn that around and say, hey, if you want to talk 1990s with me in terms of our views on racial justice, thats fine, but theres fundamentally this split, this throughout the course of the campaign where systemic racism exists, Structural Racism exists, biden trying to push back on that front. I think we have to wait until the election to understand whether what we have seen in polling, whether President Trump has gained ground with black men in terms of support makes a difference or not. But biden trying to turn that around and drill very strongly into the actual record of the Republican Party versus democratic party, and donald trump versus biden. So john, if theres one thing that republicans are seizing on, and you heard the president do it at the end of the debate, the Trump Campaign did it immediately after the debate, and its been going on all night long, and i guarantee we will hear about it all morning long was joe bidens answer on fracking and also his answer on the future of the oil and gas industry. So lets play a little bit more of that. I would transition from the oil industry, yes. Oh, thats a big statement. That is a big statement because i would stop why would you do that . Because the oil industry pollutes significantly. Oh, i see. Heres the deal. Thats a big statement. If you let me finish the statement. Because it has to be replaced by Renewable Energy over time. Over time. And i would stop giving to the oil industry. I would stop giving them federal subsidies. So the Trump Campaign is leaning into this, john, as a big gotcha moment, also the issue of fracking where joe biden now says that he would not ban fracking in pennsylvania. Again, the Trump Campaign, i just want to know one thing that people may not beware of. Fracking is under water in pennsylvania, the state where it might be politically motivated. The majority of voters, 5248 actually oppose fracking so the idea of all of this being a clear political slam dunk is a little bit more murky, nonetheless, i think this is something republicans are seizing on. Particularly bidens comments about the oil industry. Lets put this in context. He is not in favor of banning fracking except on federal lands, he has been consistent about that as a matter of policy. He has been inarticulate and confused about it, and thats a real issue but not a substantiative issue. Its a stylistic one. Second thing, he basically took trumps bait here. The first half of the sound byte we didnt hear is trump saying would you get rid of the oil industry, and all of a sudden, biden said i would transition it out. He has been calling for a Carbon Neutral economy by 2050 forever. It was part of the core plans. The way it was phrased, it will have an effect. Just ask john cornyn whos trying to distance himself from donald, and pennsylvania, to your point, its under water, and that was as close to a significant policy misstep that could translate to votes eleven days out as we saw last night. In terms of the substance, i mean, the style, just because john just touched on it i thought it was interesting because there was that noninterruption rule, i thought the candidates let their faces do the talking. President trumps facial expressions spoke a lot, and joe bidens laugh, you know, laugh and smile, and putting his head down, i thought all of that was interesting to watch. Absolutely. The president , you know, radiated a lot of scorn, contempt. He was very much in a fight. You could see this steely gaze, looking for openings, pounce when he thought he had one. He was very much in the middle of combat. Joe biden would look down and chuckle a little bit. I was waiting for him to say there you go again. Theres nothing you can do after a certain point when youve got a whole world of difference, philosophical difference, policy point difference, factual differences with the president. Youve always got to decide which of the many things he says that arent true youre going to sort of pick on and really try to drive to ground. Joe biden tried to present a different sort of a style, and of course he has that really effective method of looking right in the camera, and talking past the debate hall to the people at home, which is sort of the whole point. Thats an experienced debater. Yeah, but you know, errol, if you listen with the sound off, which is worthwhile sometimes, you would have gotten a lot of contempt from donald trump, and look at what biden settled on to deal with trump, it was the smile and the nod, the looking away, and its kind of the way you handle a malevolent child or someone who has had too much to drink and gets belligerent, you take your egoout of it, and that person is over there and im not going to engage. It was significant as a tactic to deal with someone like donald trump. Allison only listens to me with the sound off, blocks out everything i say. Youre great with the sound off. The question is what now. That was it. That was the last time we see the candidates together on stage. That was the last big set piece of this campaign. There are eleven days left. Already more people have voted early than voted four years ago, so what are we going to see for the next eleven days . Were going to see a lot of florida and pennsylvania and a lot of conversation about the coronavirus and health care. These are going to be the two mens closing arguments. Look, i think we should be prepared, depending on how close this really is for anything, for more research dumps and the like, but fundamentally, now the contours are set. The closing arguments are about whether you fix the coronavirus and then the economy or the economy and let the coronavirus sort of play out. And its all about turnout, and what were going to hear are messages targeted to crucial blocks of turnout, and crucial swing states, pennsylvania and florida, leading that pack, unless those numbers in georgia, and texas move enough that they become part of the final drive. Mark, john, errol, thank you for being with us this morning for this extra special, and yes, extra Early Edition of new day. The fall surge of the coronavirus, it is getting worse. Developing overnight, 71,000 new coronavirus cases reported in the United States. That is the 4th worst day since the pandemic began. More than 41,000 people are hospitalized. Thats the most in two months. Eight states are reporting record hospitalizations this morning. Joining us now to talk about this and more, we have cnn political commentator, dr. Abdul el s al sayed. These numbers got our attention, 71,000 new case. A few days ago, we were at 50,000, thats bad, then we hit 60,000, uhoh, how soon until 70,000, here we are. This is, i fear, the rapid acceleration that we have heard about. Yeah, allison, this speaks to two aspects of covid19. The first is that there are humans underneath this. 71,000 people just got some terrible news a couple of days ago, and were hearing about it today. That has happened now millions of times, and that is the reality of covid19, not to mention the fact that for 223,000 families, they are now aching for the loss of a loved one, but then the second point is that this is an Infectious Disease pandemic. The reason that this virus is so dangerous is because of how fast it can spread, and were used to thinking about things in linear terms, right, theres going to be a little bit more every day. Thats not how this virus works. It can double in just 2 1 2 days, and unfortunately, we are facing down what could be the most serious surge we have had of covid19 yet. And weve got to be acting that way. Our Public Officials have to be acting that way because were not turning the corner. Were about to hit the wall. Youre in ann arbor, which is in some ways in the middle of this new surge. What does it feel like for you . I tell you what, saturdays in the fall, to me, in ann arbor always meant going to the big house, 120,000 people packing into a football stadium to watch our michigan wolverines play football. That hasnt happened. Were about to play football but its not going to be a packed stadium. Our county in ann arbor Just Announced the stayathome order for the next two weeks for students on the university of michigan campus. This is not normal. And it speaks to a broader epidemic underneath this pandemic. We have institutions that have not been ready for where we are, and have not been able to respond to the fact that nationally we have not had a response to covid19 that has protected our young people, protected our old people, protected the way we live. And so this is not a normal fall, and i think everybodys feeling that, but its about to get worse, and we have to make sure that were doing what we can to protect ourselves, our families, our loved ones, and our communities. There hasnt been a national response, a coordinated national response, but the president has been strangely consistent about what he believes is going to be the end of this, and how were going to get out of this. So here he is, again, last night, saying its going to magically go away. It will go away, and as i say, were rounding the turn, we were rounding the corner. This is the same fellow who told you this was going to end by easter, the same fellow who said dont worry were going to end this by the summer. Were about to go into a dark winter, and he has no clear plan. Doctor, what does President Trump mean were rounding the corner . I think in his mind the way hes going to buy himself out of his nonresponse is through the vaccine, and yes, we have made incredib incredible progress on a vaccine because the nih is an incredible institution, and they have been able to work and orchestrate with the military and with the pharmaceutical corporation to make vaccines to be able to accelerate a process, by which we make the vaccine in terms of research, and manufacture the vaccine at the same time, and were doing this across multiple vaccines at the same time. Heres the problem though, is that if you look at poll after poll, it shows that people are less and less willing to take a vaccine. And as i said many times, theres a difference between a vaccine and a vaccination. Youve got to get a vaccine in peoples arms for it to be useful. And if people arent willing to take it because of the president s politicalization of the vaccine, hes under cutting the vaccine itself. We know we need to get 70 to 90 of people to take two doses of these vaccines in order for them to work. I worry a lot about whether or not were rounding the corner. All im seeing is, allison, the numbers you showed us, the numbers going up and up and up, and we know the winter and fall are going to be harrowing times. Weve got models telling us we could be hitting 385,000 deaths by february. We are not turning the corner. Theres going to be a lot of work, we need a competence administration, and this president hasnt shown hes willing to lead competently. Two things very well might be true. We may have a vaccine thats widely available by next spring or summer and thats terrific but that doesnt help us for this winter and fall, which is here in its deeply troubling, and the numbers are getting into a critical, critical zone. So dr. Al sayed, thank you for being with us, and helping us understand what we are seeing now, and what needs to be done now. Appreciate it. Thank you, john. As you know, North Carolina is a critical battleground state, so what did undecided voters, yes, they exist, what did they think of the debate last night, and did it finally solidify their plan . Thats next. Introducing the allnew 2021 gla suv. Starting at just 36,230. Its the biggest thing that ever happened to small. Lease the gla 250 suv for just 399 a month at your local mercedesbenz dealer. As of this morning, more than 2. 4 million voters in North Carolina have already cast their ballot. That is 80 of the total of the early vote in North Carolina that they had in 2016. Polls show that the race there is very very close, but after some really hard looking, we were able to find some undecided voters, and cnns gary tuchman caught up with them and watched the debate last night. Reporter four identify as democrats, three as republicans, four as independents. All of these north carolinians still not sure which candidate they want to be president. We watched the final debate with them. The group leaving no doubt who they think did best. Who do you think won the debate, how many of you think donald trump won this debate . No hands being raised for that. How many of you think joe biden won the debate . One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine. How many of you feel it was a draw . Two. Two for a draw. Zero for trump. Nine for biden. So why did this group feel joe biden did so well . James voted for donald trump in 2016 but is now concerned about the nations lack of unity. What do you think the most important moment of the debate was . Definitely when joe biden was talking about that hes going to be an american president because donald trump has made it clear that he doesnt support the blue states. Reporter john also voted for President Trump in 2016. Joe bidens debate comments about American Families around the dinner table meant quite a bit to him. And trump responded with some mockery of that. And i think for me, politics are about relationships and people and this is all about the american family. So that was quite revealing and disturbing for me to hear. Reporter ferry voted for Hillary Clinton four years ago, but has been undecided because she did not like joe bidens role in the 1994 crime bill. But after the debate, she feels differently. So what resonated with me was the fact that joe biden owned the crime bill, and his role in the crime bill, and that he owned the fact that they made a mistake. Reporter nathan voted for donald trump in 2016, and is one of the two who feels the debate was a draw. He says the economy must continue opening. Both of them want to open it. I think we need to open it faster than slower, not wait for the coronavirus to go away. Reporter so that was an important point . It is important, yes. Reporter that the president made . Yreporter when it comes to the major question, are any eleven ready to make a decision, no response more interesting than this from harrison. I would like to vote for joe biden, almost totally except for the fact that he is going to increase Abortion Access in america, and so, you know, ill feel a little bit safer about that not happening if amy barrett is on the supreme court. Reporter youre saying if she is confirmed youll vote for biden most likely . Yes. Reporter how many of these voters are ready to cast their vote following this debate. The answer is seven. Of the seven who are ready to cast your votes, how many are ready to vote for donald trump . Zero. How many are ready to vote for joe biden . All seven. As far as the other four, the debates are over, but their indecisiveness is not. Gary tuchman, cnn, davidson, North Carolina. You know, i love watching these things. I love watching them, conducting them, i learn something every time. We werent pumping in the cricket noise there, there really was cricket noise when asking how many people would vote for President Trump, and it was fascinating to hear that those moments that joe biden seized on about your family around the dinner table that they do resonate with real voters. I was surprised by the uniformity in the perception that those voters had. I really was. If you follow the punditry online and post debate on all the new stations, you wouldnt get the impression that joe biden won as clear of a victory as he did with the undecided voters last night, which is why it was so interesting, what they said, so interesting what broke through to them, really. Appreciate garys work on that. So President Trump offered a new explanation for why he paid so little in taxes. We have a fact check on that. Next. We live in uncertain times. National Security Officials announcing that russian state sponsored hackers have tried to break into dozens of state and local Government Networks here in the u. S. And have succeeded in stealing data in at least two cases. This week intelligence officials also accused iran of being behind thousands of intimidating emails sent to voters. So President Trump claimed last night that he prepaid millions of dollars in taxes. What is the truth . Chief Business Correspondent and star of early start normally seen at this time, Christine Romans joins us now with a fact check. Romans. John, you know, if the president would just release his tax returns, it would clear up all of these questions, so many questions about potential conflicts of interest. He has not. Joe biden has released 22 years or so of returns from excellent reporting from the New York Times, what emerges is the picture of a man who portrays himself as one of the wealthiest president s in the nations history but has avoided paying federal income tax for decades, paying 750 in 2016 and 2017. Last night the president made this claim. They talk about 750, which i think is a filing fee. I prepaid millions and millions of dollars in taxes. A filing fee. John, the irs does not charge taxpayers a filing fee. Thats from tax preparations Services Like h r block, not the irs. Reporting by the New York Times shows the president is a serial tax avoider kwhoz pwho h presided over hundreds of millions of dollars of losses and is crushed by a mountain of debt. That times tax bomb shell revealed a few things, the president is adept at losing lots of money. The system rewards rich people who lose lots of money, they can write off the losses and the average citizen has paid more to support americas roads, and democracy than the president has. If hed release his returns, he can clear that up. He claimed hes under audit, and would release the tax returns once the audit is over. He can. It is his choice and provides the public transparency with his business dealings. The president turned around and attacked joe biden on his sons alleged dealings with china. Earlier we learned trump had pursued a range of business projects in china for years, and maintains a chinese bank account operating an office there during his first run for president.
